Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKNR - Documentary editorial photograph shows a red Labour Vote Andy For Us' campaign poster in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses bold red, white and yellow colours associated with Labour campaign branding and asks local voters to back Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham has often been described in media and political commentary as the King of the North', a nickname reflecting his high public profile across Greater Manchester and the wider North of England. Official Greater Manchester sources state that he was first elected mayor in 2017 and then re-elected in 2021 and 2024. The by-election became a nationally watched contest because Burnham's route back to Westminster was linked in reporting with wider speculation about Labour's future direction under Sir Keir Starmer. The Makerfield race was not simply Labour against one challenger. The Green Party selected Sarah Wakefield, raising questions in coverage about whether the progressive or left-leaning vote could be split, while Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, whose campaign attracted scrutiny over past social media posts. Current polling and reporting should be treated cautiously, as by-election campaigns can move quickly, but Survation placed Burnham and Kenyon close at the start of the campaign, with smaller parties also competing for attention. This photograph can illustrate Labour campaigning, Green Party pressure, Reform UK challenge, tactical voting, red wall politics, northern identity, candidate branding, local democracy, parliamentary by-elections and Westminster leadership speculation. For stock buyers, the value is the readable slogan and clear local political context: an ordinary Ashton-in-Makerfield street carrying a high-profile election message at the point where local voter concerns, national party tensions and mayoral politics all meet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRFY - Photograph showing vineyard rows in the Giardini Naxos area of Sicily, Italy, with cultivated vines across brown soil and a large white Mediterranean building rising behind red tiled roofs and trees under a clear blue sky. The supplied title identifies the scene as Nerello Mascalese vineyards, although individual grape varieties cannot be confirmed from the photograph alone without vineyard records or a close view of leaves and bunches. In this part of eastern Sicily, close to Mount Etna, Mascali and Taormina, Nerello Mascalese is one of the key native red grapes associated with Etna wine. It is best known for producing Etna Rosso, a pale to medium-bodied red wine prized for elegance, freshness, red cherry, wild strawberry, floral notes, spice, minerality and fine tannins. Etna Rosso may be made entirely from Nerello Mascalese, or blended with Nerello Cappuccio under Etna DOC tradition, and the wines often reflect volcanic soils, altitude, sea breezes and microclimates around Europe's most active volcano. Giardini Naxos, on the Ionian coast below Taormina, sits within a wider landscape of coastal agriculture, citrus, olives, vineyards, tourism and historic settlement. The image is useful for editorial and commercial searches around Sicilian wine, Etna DOC, Nerello Mascalese, Italian viticulture, vineyard tourism, Mediterranean agriculture, wine production, rural Sicily, wine holidays, food and drink, sustainable farming, volcanic terroir, Taormina excursions and the link between tourism and agriculture in eastern Sicily. The neat vine training, dry soil, bright summer light, palms, low vegetation and clear blue sky suggest a warm growing season landscape, possibly late spring or summer before harvest. Strong stock-photo concepts include Sicily vineyard, Giardini Naxos, Etna wine region, Nerello Mascalese grapes, Etna Rosso, Italian red wine, wine tourism, Mediterranean countryside, volcanic wine, rural economy, agriculture, travel and Sicilian identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEH1 - The Manchester Store at Manchester Airport is shown selling city-branded souvenirs, travel essentials, soft toys, keyrings, magnets and V&A merchandise, with a prominent illuminated Manchester sign and bee logo above the retail stock-photo/gotonysmith-Display.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>display. The image is a useful editorial view of airport shopping, destination branding and the way Manchester presents itself to visitors, tourists and returning passengers. The worker bee has become one of Manchester's best-known civic symbols, linked to the city's industrial past, local identity, hard work, resilience and Mancunian pride. Its use on souvenirs, signs and merchandise has grown strongly in recent years, making the bee logo instantly recognisable as shorthand for the city. The airport setting adds commercial value for stories about travel retail, visitor spending, UK tourism, airport passenger experience, city-break souvenirs, local independent brands, regional identity and the wider Manchester visitor economy. Visible categories including soft toys, travel accessories, keyrings and magnets show the practical mix of last-minute shopping and souvenir buying common in departures areas. The photograph also works for features about how airports increasingly promote local culture rather than only selling generic duty-free products, using regional design, museum partnerships, football culture, music heritage, industrial history and civic symbols to create a stronger sense of place. Manchester Airport has highlighted its aim to showcase local and up-and-coming brands to global audiences, which fits the scene's mix of local pride and international passenger flow. The black, blue and yellow signage, packed retail racks and bee motif create a clear, modern stock image for articles on Manchester branding, northern identity, retail display, airport redevelopment, tourism marketing, travel convenience, gifts, consumer behaviour and the commercial role of place-based souvenirs. It is especially useful where a recognisable Manchester image

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1HK - Front elevation of BBC Radio Merseyside studios on Hanover Street, Liverpool city centre, with Made of Liverpool' window branding and presenter posters across the glazed facade. Photographed in daylight in an urban streetscape, this image captures the local broadcasting base of the BBC's long established Merseyside radio service in public setting. The building is associated with BBC local radio, regional media, journalism, interviews, live music sessions, community storytelling and public service broadcasting for Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area. The bold Made of Liverpool' slogan gives the picture strong civic identity, reflecting local pride, Scouse culture, creativity, music heritage and the city's media presence. The prominent glass frontage, steel framing, corner architecture and street level entrance make this useful for editorial, documentary and commercial themes around broadcasting, communications, local news, radio production, media buildings, cultural identity and central Liverpool. BBC Radio Merseyside broadcasts from studios on Hanover Street, making the site recognisable to listeners and those interested in regional broadcasting. People standing outside add scale and a natural everyday city feel, reinforcing themes of accessibility, public engagement and the visible presence of media organisations within the heart of the city. Useful search themes include BBC building, Liverpool media hub, local radio station, public broadcaster, modern office facade, city centre architecture, journalism in the North West, civic messaging, regional press, presenter advertising, glass office exterior, Liverpool streetscene and contemporary Britain. The weather appears bright but overcast, typical of a mild day in north west England, with soft light on the exterior and clear signage visible from the street. This is a strong editorial image for stories about local identity, the BBC in the regions, Liverpool culture, media employment and place branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6CF - A life-sized bronze memorial statue outside Avon Fire & Rescue Service at Temple Back East, Bristol BS1 6EU, depicting a bare-headed firefighter holding his helmet and standing on a stone plinth. The sculpture serves as a poignant tribute to firefighters who have lost their lives while serving their communities.
Positioned in front of the Avon Fire & Rescue Service building near Temple, the memorial presents the firefighter not in action but in a moment of reflection, emphasising humanity, vulnerability and sacrifice rather than heroics alone. The figure's detailed uniform and equipment symbolise the everyday risks faced by firefighters in the course of their duties.
Fire service memorials such as this play an important role in preserving institutional memory and acknowledging the dangers inherent in emergency response work. They are also spaces for public reflection, remembrance and respect, recognising both historic and contemporary loss. The memorial is understood to honour firefighters who died in service, including those lost during periods of national conflict such as the World Wars, when fire brigades faced additional dangers from bombing and civil defence duties.
Located within a modern urban setting close to Bristol's transport and civic infrastructure, the statue connects past and present service, reminding passers-by of the enduring role of emergency workers in public safety. Photographed in daylight with the Avon Fire & Rescue Service signage visible, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including remembrance, emergency services history, public service sacrifice, civic memorials and urban commemoration in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P7EX - A yellow Bee Network electric double decker bus passes the glass frontage of the National Football Museum on the approach to Manchester Victoria station in Manchester city centre. The bus carries Bee Network branding, placing everyday public transport in a recognisable civic setting beside one of the city's visitor attractions. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of Andy Burnham's mayoral transport programme, Greater Manchester bus franchising, public control of buses, clean air policy, zero emission vehicles and the wider attempt to build a more integrated public transport network across the city region. The National Football Museum is based in the Urbis Building at Cathedral Gardens, close to Victoria station, Shudehill and the medieval quarter, so the photograph also works for stories about tourism, football culture, city centre mobility and rail, tram and bus interchange. The Bee Network's yellow and black identity echoes Manchester's worker bee symbol, a long-established emblem of industry, collective effort and Mancunian pride. In modern use it has become part of the public language of the city, appearing in transport branding, souvenirs, civic campaigns and local identity. This image connects that symbolism with practical transport change: a branded electric bus serving streets used by commuters, shoppers, football fans and museum visitors. The overcast daylight, road markings, glass architecture and passengers inside the bus give the picture a strong documentary feel. It can illustrate sustainable transport, bus electrification, mayoral devolution, local government, levelling up, active travel connections, public investment, city branding, air quality, public realm and the politics of northern transport. It is also relevant to features on Manchester tourism, the National Football Museum, Victoria station, TfGM, GMCA, bus operations, public service reform and the visible change from deregulated bus liveries to a unified regional network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHBH - The Scottish and UK governments are going to court in a row over reforms that would make to make it easier for people in Scotland to change their legally recognised gender.
MSPs voted in December last year to pass the controversial Gender Recognition (Reform) Bill by 86 votes to 39.
But in an equally contentious move, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack then used UK government powers to veto the bill, saying it could interfere with equalities law across the whole country.
The legal arguments over Scotland's gender reforms
Scottish ministers have lodged a legal challenge at the Court of Session in a bid to overturn that decision and to have the reforms come in to law.
Presentational grey line
What is the current system?
The Scottish government wants to simplify and speed up the existing process by which people can obtain a gender recognition certificate - the legal recognition of a trans person's acquired gender.
At present, people apply to a UK gender recognition panel and typically must present a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
This is defined by the NHS as being caused by a mismatch between their biological sex (whether they were born physically male or female) and their gender identity (the way in which they see and describe themselves).
Applicants need to provide two medical reports, one from a specialist detailing their diagnosis and another listing any treatment or surgery they may have had to change their sexual characteristics.
They must also prove they have lived full-time in their acquired gender for at least two years - for example showing they have used a different name in official documents, or changed their gender on their driving licence or passport - and swear an oath that they intend to continue for the rest of their lives.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHCA - Clean Air Zone
Birmingham introduced a Clean Air Zone on 1 June 2021, which charges polluting vehicles to travel into the city centre (all roads within the A4540 ring road). Poor air quality kills around 900 people a year in Birmingham and the government has ordered the city to reduce pollution. The daily charge is £8 for petrol cars built before 2006 and diesel cars built before 2015, and £50 for lorries and coaches. The money is used to improve public transport. The plan was backed by the British Heart Foundation, which said In order to protect everyone living in Birmingham, it is vital that bold action is taken on air quality. A Clean Air Zone in the city will be a crucial step forward, as this is the most cost-effective way to tackle polluted air and minimise the damaging effect that it has on people's heart health.
In the following month after the introduction of the charge, the number of the most polluting vehicles entering the zone each day dropped from 18,787 to just over 11,000, and compliance rose from 73.8% to 80.4%. Nitrogen dioxide levels fell by 13% in the first six months of the scheme.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHCG - Bradford Clean Air Zone is a road traffic low-emission programme in the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. Plans were advanced for many cities in England to have Clean Air Zones (CAZ), but of the ones put forward in Yorkshire, only Bradford's CAZ has been taken to an operational stage. The scheme commenced on 26 September 2022, and all vehicles, barring private cars and motorbikes, must be compliant with the scheme or face a charge for entering into the zone. The programme aims to help the district comply with legal limits for air quality.
The UK Government has set out the definitions of four schemes (labelled as A, B, C, and D. Bradford opted for a C-scheme (meaning it is referred to as a C-CAZ), which would see charges for all vehicles except for private cars and motorbikes. ANPR cameras have been installed around the city centre, and along the Shipley/Bradford corridor, to monitor vehicles entering the zone. At the launch in September 2022, drivers of buses and HGVs which did not conform to the approved ratings would be fined £50, vans and minibuses £9, and taxis £7. For each fine doled out, the UK Government would be paid £2. The charging time is to be classified as a day from midnight to midnight, not 24 hours from when a vehicle enters the zone. However, vehicles can leave and re-enter the zone several times between the midnight to midnight period, and only be charged once

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHD4 - Scotland's Low Emission Zones
Protecting public health by improving air quality while helping to meet our climate change emission reduction targets
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are a moving traffic contravention, preventing the most polluting vehicles driving within an area, which improves air quality and helps to protect public health.
LEZs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round (including all Public Holidays such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are linked to local and national vehicle licencing databases, to monitor all vehicles driving in a LEZ. They will detect vehicles which do not comply with the emission standards. Stationary vehicles are not subject to LEZ restrictions.
Scottish LEZs will be enforced by Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), there is no facility for pre-payment. When a non-compliant vehicle is detected driving within a LEZ a PCN is issued to the registered keeper of that vehicle.
Emission Standards
A vehicle may only drive within a LEZ if it meets the specified emission standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHF4 - Like many areas across the country, Greater Manchester has illegal levels of air pollution on some local roads. Poor air quality affects everyone's health, particularly the most vulnerable people in society. That includes deprived communities, children, elderly people and those with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. It contributes to nearly 1,200 premature deaths in Greater Manchester every year.
We're committed to cleaning up the air our residents breathe. We plan to do this in a way that encourages a change to cleaner vehicles without putting jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk.
Why no Clean Air Zone?
You might have seen signs for a Clean Air Zone on our roads. That's because our first Clean Air Plan included plans for a Greater Manchester-wide category C charging Clean Air Zone.
But following the pandemic, government agreed that this charging Clean Air Zone would NOT be introduced on 30 May 2022.
That's because the pandemic resulted in significant vehicle supply chain issues, rising vehicle prices, and a cost-of-living crisis. The original Clean Air Plan was no longer the right solution and could have caused significant financial hardship.
At the same time, it would not have met the government's legal direction (issued before the pandemic) to tackle harmful nitrogen dioxide on local roads by 2024.
Our new investment-led plan does not include a charging-Clean Air Zone.

The borough later became a county borough in 1887 and replaced by a metropolitan borough with an expanded administrative responsibility for nearby towns and villages in 1974.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JHK - Unite the Union, commonly known as Unite, is a British and Irish trade union which was formed on 1 May 2007 by the merger of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). Unite is the second largest trade union in the UK (after Unison), with over 1.2 million members in construction, manufacturing, transport, logistics and other sectors. The general secretary of Unite is Sharon Graham, who was elected on 25 August 2021 with 46,696 votes (approx 3% of Unite's claimed membership) on a turnout of 124,127 (approx 9% of claimed membership), with her term beginning on 26 August 2021.
History
Merger and early years (20072010)
Unite the Union was formed on 1 May 2007 by the merger of Amicus, a general private sector union, and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). The general secretaries of the previous unions, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley respectively, served as joint general secretaries of the new union. The executive councils of the predecessor unions became a joint executive council which served until elections could be held for an executive council of Unite. The new council took office on 1 May 2008. They put a new rulebook for the union to a postal ballot of members during July 2008, which was accepted.
In 2008, there was a rooftop hunger strike at Unite's Transport House building in Belfast. The participants were formerly shop stewards of the Transport and General Workers Union, now a section of Unite. The dispute was over legal fees and compensation for an unfair dismissal action against the workers' employer, arising from a 2002 strike at Belfast International Airport, and the related actions of a full-time union official employee

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64MP8 - This image shows platform signage and passenger information displays at Hamilton Square station, part of the Merseyrail underground network serving the Wirral and Liverpool City Region. The distinctive yellow wall panels, station name sign, and clearly presented travel information boards reflect the consistent visual identity used across the Merseyrail system.
Hamilton Square is one of the busiest stations on the Wirral Line and plays a key role in commuter travel between Birkenhead, Liverpool city centre, and surrounding areas. As an underground station, it forms part of a network that combines deep-level sections with surface rail, providing frequent, high-capacity services for daily travel.
The image highlights practical elements of rail infrastructure, including wayfinding, timetables, and platform guidance, all essential to the smooth operation of a high-frequency suburban rail system. The signage also illustrates how passenger information is prioritised in busy urban stations to support accessibility and efficient movement.
Photographed in even interior lighting with no passengers visible, the image provides a neutral, documentary view of modern UK suburban rail infrastructure. It is well suited for editorial use covering public transport, urban mobility, commuter rail systems, and the everyday operation of the Merseyrail network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH9XEF - Taken on 27 Jan 2023, this photograph shows Wigan bus station, Market St, Wigan, Lancashire, England, UK, WN1 1HX. The location is Market St, Wigan, Lancashire, England, UK, WN1 1HX. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains platform, concourse or service signage details that place the railway scene in a real working transport environment. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Wigan, town, centre, Wigan bus station, Market Street, Market St, WN1, stands, stand, Bee Network, Lancs, Lancashire, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy papers and web features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXGR - The Yorkshire Trading Company is a chain of variety and discount stores founded and based in Northern England, it is a family-run business dating back to 1954 and is now into the third and fourth generations. It operates 33 Yorkshire Trading Company stores from as far north as Alnwick in Northumberland to Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
In 1964, John Nichols opened his first shop in Kingston upon Hull, by 1985 the Nichols family (John, his wife Molly and his two sons Paul and Robert) had eight stores in towns such as Whitby and Bridlington, and in 1995 the store count had increased to 12 with locations in Richmond and Ripon. With the demise of high street giant Woolworths in 2008, 11 more shops were also added to the portfolio.
The business had several speciality stores under different names
James Piper was the name given to a glassware store in Driffield operated by Tom Nichols, John's youngest son. Other store names such as JC Nichols and Barmy Bob's were phased out in 2000 as the company rebranded all of their locations under the Yorkshire Trading Company banner and became a limited company.
In 2015, work was completed on the construction of a new purpose built distribution centre and head office, costing £7 million, located at Kellythorpe Industrial Estate, Driffield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPYF0 - Merseyrail is a commuter rail network serving the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Merseyrail operates 68 railway stations across two lines the Northern Line and Wirral Line, which are dedicated 750 V DC third rail electrified lines that serve underground stations in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Merseyrail branding is also applied to stations and 'shared' services on the City Line, which are within the Liverpool City Region but operated by other train operating companies. The City Line services operate on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and the Liverpool to Wigan Line using a mix of AC electric and diesel trains.
The Merseyrail third rail network has 68 stations and 75 miles (121 km) of track, of which 6.5 miles (10.5 km) are underground. It carries approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday, or 34 million passengers per year
The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The full 1970s plans for the network were not realised, but the network has been extended on its peripheries with additional extensions proposed. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.
Merseyrail is operated for Merseytravel by 50:50 joint venture Serco-Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The 25-year contract expires in 2028.As of 2015, Serco-Abellio operates a fleet of 59 trains and employs 1,200 people
Services on the electrified Merseyrail network are operated by British Rail Class 507 and Class 508 electric multiple unit trains (EMUs). These replaced pre-war Class 502 (originally constructed by the LMS) and similar Class 503 EMUs. There are 57 trains in service on the network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA01 - The Wirral line is one of two commuter railway lines operated by Merseyrail and centred on Merseyside, England, the other being the Northern line. A third line of the Merseyrail network, the City Line, is not operated by the Merseyrail train operating company, though it also receives funding from Merseytravel, the passenger transport executive for Merseyside.
The Wirral line connects Liverpool to the Wirral Peninsula via the Mersey Railway Tunnel, with branches to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. Beneath Liverpool, the line follows a clockwise circular route in a single-track tunnel called the Loop, built in the early 1970s.
The line was created by the amalgamation of several historic railways, and has carried its present name since the opening of the Merseyrail network by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 October 1978 during the British Rail period. The Wirral line is fully electrified with a DC third rail, and has existed in its current form since May 1994 with the start of electric services to Ellesmere Port. A total of 34 stations are served, with connections available to mainline services at Liverpool Lime Street and Chester. The line also connects with the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network at Liverpool Central and Moorfields.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DCW9 - A coaster, drink coaster, beverage coaster, or beermat is an article used to rest beverages upon.
The purpose is to protect the surface of a table or any other surface where the user might place their beverage.
Public houses usually will have beermats spread out across the tables. They are used not just to protect the surface of the table, but, as they are usually made of paper, they can also be used to absorb condensation dripping along the glass or serve as an ad-hoc notepad. Beermats are often branded with trademarks or alcohol advertising. Beermats are not to be confused with bar mats, rectangular pieces of rubber or absorbent material used to protect the counter top and soak up spilled drinks in a bar or pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKET6 - Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship. Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF7X - Manchester gothic town hall , Albert Square, Manchester, England taken with an IR adapted Canon 5D DSLR camera
Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHDC - Scotland's Low Emission Zones

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF1355 - Saddam Hussein playing cards where Saddam is the Ace of spades - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War and again in World War IIArmy Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars todayand in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, and seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEE - Photo shows Transpennine train carriage at platform, Warrington Central station, Cheshire,England UK. The image can support editorial features on public transport, commuting, passenger information, ticketing, rail and bus infrastructure, regional connectivity, station environments and sustainable travel. Transport images like this are especially useful where operator branding, vehicle type, platform or street context is visible, because they locate policy themes in a real everyday setting rather than an abstract transport graphic. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Lighting, passenger density and weather should be checked from the image, but the subject is clearly a live transport or travel setting. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
