Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9867 - A clean, contemporary exterior view of Stockport Interchange in Greater Manchester, featuring prominent Bee Network branding and the large Stockport Interchange name mounted on modern cladding. The yellow bee emblem, strongly associated with Greater Manchester identity and the Bee Network transport system, provides an instantly recognisable visual anchor for editorial and commercial uses. The photo is taken in crisp winter conditions, with bright low sunlight and a clear blue sky that gives the scene a fresh, high-contrast look and picks out surface textures and edges on the sign and building fa??ade.
The composition focuses on wayfinding and place identity rather than crowds, making it especially useful as a neutral, non-controversial illustration for stories about public transport, bus network operations, transport investment, and town-centre regeneration. The interchange is presented as a modern piece of civic infrastructure, the type of hub designed to make switching between services simpler for commuters, shoppers, and visitors. The absence of vehicles in the frame keeps attention on the signage and branding, which is often exactly what editors need to represent a transport organisation or location without tying the image to a specific incident.
This picture can support coverage of the Bee Network and Transport for Greater Manchester initiatives, integrated ticketing and information points, accessibility improvements, and wider debates about sustainable urban mobility. It also works well for general Stockport location coverage, with the winter light and calm atmosphere providing a professional, documentary feel suitable for news, policy, and transport features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CJDPN3 - A freestanding sign promoting Chadwick's Original Bury Black Puddings at Bury Market Hall in Greater Manchester. The sign advertises both hot and cold black pudding, reflecting the everyday, practical nature of market food retail and the enduring popularity of this traditional Lancashire product.
Bury is nationally synonymous with black pudding, a food deeply rooted in northern English working-class food culture and historic meat-processing traditions. Chadwick's is one of the best-known traders at Bury Market, with a reputation built over decades among local shoppers and visitors alike. The straightforward, functional signage reinforces the stall's emphasis on tradition, familiarity and quality rather than novelty.
The image was taken indoors under artificial market-hall lighting, typical of year-round trading conditions, and captures a small but culturally significant detail of British food heritage. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating regional identity, traditional British cuisine, historic markets, local economies and the persistence of everyday food traditions in modern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6CF - A life-sized bronze memorial statue outside Avon Fire & Rescue Service at Temple Back East, Bristol BS1 6EU, depicting a bare-headed firefighter holding his helmet and standing on a stone plinth. The sculpture serves as a poignant tribute to firefighters who have lost their lives while serving their communities.
Positioned in front of the Avon Fire & Rescue Service building near Temple, the memorial presents the firefighter not in action but in a moment of reflection, emphasising humanity, vulnerability and sacrifice rather than heroics alone. The figure's detailed uniform and equipment symbolise the everyday risks faced by firefighters in the course of their duties.
Fire service memorials such as this play an important role in preserving institutional memory and acknowledging the dangers inherent in emergency response work. They are also spaces for public reflection, remembrance and respect, recognising both historic and contemporary loss. The memorial is understood to honour firefighters who died in service, including those lost during periods of national conflict such as the World Wars, when fire brigades faced additional dangers from bombing and civil defence duties.
Located within a modern urban setting close to Bristol's transport and civic infrastructure, the statue connects past and present service, reminding passers-by of the enduring role of emergency workers in public safety. Photographed in daylight with the Avon Fire & Rescue Service signage visible, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including remembrance, emergency services history, public service sacrifice, civic memorials and urban commemoration in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2W - Directional signage for the Trans Pennine Trail photographed in the Latchford area of south Warrington, Cheshire, England. The blue wayfinding signs indicate west and east routes along the long-distance trail and display symbols for both cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the shared-use nature of the path. The Trans Pennine Trail is a major national route stretching coast to coast across northern England, designed to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable travel through a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.
In towns such as Warrington, the trail forms part of local active-travel infrastructure, connecting residential neighbourhoods with green corridors, waterways, employment areas, and nearby towns. The signage reflects consistent national trail branding and supports navigation for leisure users as well as commuters. The image illustrates broader themes of sustainable transport, public investment in cycling and walking infrastructure, and the integration of long-distance recreational routes into everyday urban environments across contemporary Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG25 - A customer purchases bundles of bright red Yorkshire forced rhubarb from E Oldroyd & Sons at the Wakefield Rhubarb Festival, held annually in Wakefield city centre, West Yorkshire, England. The image shows neatly stacked rhubarb stems displayed on a traditional wooden market stall, with handwritten price signs visible, reflecting the practical, small-scale nature of regional food trading.
The Wakefield Rhubarb Festival takes place each February and celebrates the area's long association with rhubarb growing as part of the Rhubarb Triangle, a historic agricultural region covering parts of Wakefield, Leeds, and Bradford. Forced rhubarb is traditionally grown by candlelight in dark sheds during winter months, producing the vivid colour and delicate flavour seen in the crop.
E Oldroyd & Sons are among the long-standing growers associated with Yorkshire rhubarb production, supplying both local markets and national retailers. The festival attracts visitors from across the region and beyond, combining food stalls, cookery demonstrations, and cultural events celebrating local food heritage.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British food festivals, regional agriculture, traditional crops, local markets, seasonal produce, Yorkshire food culture, and community events celebrating rural heritage within urban settings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHBR - A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is an area in the United Kingdom where targeted action is taken to improve air quality. A CAZ can be non-charging or charging.
Whether a vehicle is charged when entering or moving through a CAZ depends on the type of vehicle and the Euro standard of the vehicle. The amount charged is up to the local authority responsible for the CAZ. Ultra-low-emission vehicles are not charged when entering or moving through a Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHCA - Clean Air Zone
Birmingham introduced a Clean Air Zone on 1 June 2021, which charges polluting vehicles to travel into the city centre (all roads within the A4540 ring road). Poor air quality kills around 900 people a year in Birmingham and the government has ordered the city to reduce pollution. The daily charge is ?8 for petrol cars built before 2006 and diesel cars built before 2015, and ?50 for lorries and coaches. The money is used to improve public transport. The plan was backed by the British Heart Foundation, which said In order to protect everyone living in Birmingham, it is vital that bold action is taken on air quality. A Clean Air Zone in the city will be a crucial step forward, as this is the most cost-effective way to tackle polluted air and minimise the damaging effect that it has on people's heart health.
In the following month after the introduction of the charge, the number of the most polluting vehicles entering the zone each day dropped from 18,787 to just over 11,000, and compliance rose from 73.8% to 80.4%. Nitrogen dioxide levels fell by 13% in the first six months of the scheme.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHCG - Bradford Clean Air Zone is a road traffic low-emission programme in the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England. Plans were advanced for many cities in England to have Clean Air Zones (CAZ), but of the ones put forward in Yorkshire, only Bradford's CAZ has been taken to an operational stage. The scheme commenced on 26 September 2022, and all vehicles, barring private cars and motorbikes, must be compliant with the scheme or face a charge for entering into the zone. The programme aims to help the district comply with legal limits for air quality.
The UK Government has set out the definitions of four schemes (labelled as A, B, C, and D. Bradford opted for a C-scheme (meaning it is referred to as a C-CAZ), which would see charges for all vehicles except for private cars and motorbikes. ANPR cameras have been installed around the city centre, and along the Shipley/Bradford corridor, to monitor vehicles entering the zone. At the launch in September 2022, drivers of buses and HGVs which did not conform to the approved ratings would be fined ?50, vans and minibuses ?9, and taxis ?7. For each fine doled out, the UK Government would be paid ?2. The charging time is to be classified as a day from midnight to midnight, not 24 hours from when a vehicle enters the zone. However, vehicles can leave and re-enter the zone several times between the midnight to midnight period, and only be charged once

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHD4 - Scotland's Low Emission Zones
Protecting public health by improving air quality while helping to meet our climate change emission reduction targets
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are a moving traffic contravention, preventing the most polluting vehicles driving within an area, which improves air quality and helps to protect public health.
LEZs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round (including all Public Holidays such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are linked to local and national vehicle licencing databases, to monitor all vehicles driving in a LEZ. They will detect vehicles which do not comply with the emission standards. Stationary vehicles are not subject to LEZ restrictions.
Scottish LEZs will be enforced by Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), there is no facility for pre-payment.? When a non-compliant vehicle is detected driving within a LEZ a PCN is issued to the registered keeper of that vehicle.?
Emission Standards
A vehicle may only drive within a LEZ if it meets the specified emission standards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHF4 - Like many areas across the country, Greater Manchester has illegal levels of air pollution on some local roads. Poor air quality affects everyone's health, particularly the most vulnerable people in society. That includes deprived communities, children, elderly people and those with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. It contributes to nearly 1,200 premature deaths in Greater Manchester every year.
We're committed to cleaning up the air our residents breathe. We plan to do this in a way that encourages a change to cleaner vehicles without putting jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk.
Why no Clean Air Zone?
You might have seen signs for a Clean Air Zone on our roads. That's because our first Clean Air Plan included plans for a Greater Manchester-wide category C charging Clean Air Zone.
But following the pandemic, government agreed that this charging Clean Air Zone would NOT be introduced on 30 May 2022.
That's because the pandemic resulted in significant vehicle supply chain issues, rising vehicle prices, and a cost-of-living crisis. The original Clean Air Plan was no longer the right solution and could have caused significant financial hardship.
At the same time, it would not have met the government's legal direction (issued before the pandemic) to tackle harmful nitrogen dioxide on local roads by 2024.
Our new investment-led plan does not include a charging-Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JHK - Unite the Union, commonly known as Unite, is a British and Irish trade union which was formed on 1 May 2007 by the merger of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). Unite is the second largest trade union in the UK (after Unison), with over 1.2 million members in construction, manufacturing, transport, logistics and other sectors. The general secretary of Unite is Sharon Graham, who was elected on 25 August 2021 with 46,696 votes (approx 3% of Unite's claimed membership) on a turnout of 124,127 (approx 9% of claimed membership), with her term beginning on 26 August 2021.
History
Merger and early years (2007?2010)
Unite the Union was formed on 1 May 2007 by the merger of Amicus, a general private sector union, and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). The general secretaries of the previous unions, Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley respectively, served as joint general secretaries of the new union. The executive councils of the predecessor unions became a joint executive council which served until elections could be held for an executive council of Unite. The new council took office on 1 May 2008. They put a new rulebook for the union to a postal ballot of members during July 2008, which was accepted.
In 2008, there was a rooftop hunger strike at Unite's Transport House building in Belfast. The participants were formerly shop stewards of the Transport and General Workers Union, now a section of Unite. The dispute was over legal fees and compensation for an unfair dismissal action against the workers' employer, arising from a 2002 strike at Belfast International Airport, and the related actions of a full-time union official employee

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64MP8 - This image shows platform signage and passenger information displays at Hamilton Square station, part of the Merseyrail underground network serving the Wirral and Liverpool City Region. The distinctive yellow wall panels, station name sign, and clearly presented travel information boards reflect the consistent visual identity used across the Merseyrail system.
Hamilton Square is one of the busiest stations on the Wirral Line and plays a key role in commuter travel between Birkenhead, Liverpool city centre, and surrounding areas. As an underground station, it forms part of a network that combines deep-level sections with surface rail, providing frequent, high-capacity services for daily travel.
The image highlights practical elements of rail infrastructure, including wayfinding, timetables, and platform guidance, all essential to the smooth operation of a high-frequency suburban rail system. The signage also illustrates how passenger information is prioritised in busy urban stations to support accessibility and efficient movement.
Photographed in even interior lighting with no passengers visible, the image provides a neutral, documentary view of modern UK suburban rail infrastructure. It is well suited for editorial use covering public transport, urban mobility, commuter rail systems, and the everyday operation of the Merseyrail network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64N03 - East Midlands Railway's special Rainbow Train celebrates Belper and Derby Pride
A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow ?swoosh' livery also features the tagline ?Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J42 - This image shows Transport for Wales CAF Class 197 unit 197018 standing at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire. The train is operating a northbound service toward Holyhead, linking North West England with North Wales and the Isle of Anglesey.
The Class 197 fleet, built by CAF as part of the Civity family, represents a modernisation of diesel regional services in Wales and the border counties. Designed to replace older rolling stock, the trains offer improved accessibility, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency on long regional routes that are not fully electrified.
The photograph focuses on the cab end and coupling area of the unit, highlighting contemporary train design, lighting, and livery. Platform features such as the yellow safety line and tactile paving are visible, situating the scene within a busy mainline station environment that handles both long-distance and regional services.
Taken in daylight under the station canopy, the image is well suited to editorial use covering UK rail transport, modern rolling stock, regional connectivity, Welsh transport policy, and everyday passenger rail operations on routes linking England and Wales.

Probably 17th-century - suggested by the date 1685 in a gable - this much restored inn is worth a visit to see two small rooms of real character. Behind the servery an old latch door leads into a small snug with two good baffles/screens by the entrance with colourful pictorial stained and leaded panels at the top, early 20th-century fixed seating and bell pushes around most of the room but, sadly, a modern brick fireplace. Down a short passageway on the rear right a sliding door leads into the small Trophy Room with Victorian fixed seating with carved arms / bench ends and bell pushes all around the room but, again, another modern brick fireplace. The front of the pub is three rooms opened up and modernised but the bar counter may be old with a modern frontage of carved panels added and an area on the front right does retain old fixed seating and bell pushes. Active bowling green at rear owned by the pub and a modern function room is used by a folk club (Sunday evenings).

The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle.
Today Bacharach thrives on tourism and wine from Bacharach is still enjoying international popularity. Not to be overlooked, however, are problems arising from a shrinking population, itself brought about by a lack of prospects.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MX9FPW - Cadent Gas is a British regional gas distribution company that owns, operates and maintains the largest natural gas distribution network in the United Kingdom, transporting gas to 11 million homes and businesses across North West England, West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England and North London.
Cadent Gas Limited represents four of the eight gas distribution networks in the United Kingdom. Following production and importation, all gas in the UK passes through National Grid's national transmission system, before entering the distribution networks. The distribution network providers, one of which is Cadent Limited, are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of the gas to the end consumer, on behalf of the chosen supplier.
The company does not produce or own the gas that passes through their pipeline networks but 50% of UK gas customers are served by their pipeline system.
The company also manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry in the UK, taking calls and giving safety advice on behalf of the industry. In 2017/18 1.952 million gas emergency calls were answered

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K546YH - The British Rail Class 158 Express Sprinter is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger train. It is a member of the Sprinter series of regional trains, produced as a replacement for British Rail's first generation of DMUs
of the other members, the Class 159 is almost identical to the Class 158, having been converted from Class 158 to Class 159 in two batches to operate express services from London Waterloo to the West of England.
The Class 158 was constructed between 1989 and 1992 by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works. The majority were built as two-car sets, some three-car sets were also produced. During September 1990, the first Express Sprinters were operated by ScotRail
the type was promptly introduced to secondary routes across the Midlands, Northern England, Wales and the South West. The Class 158 enabled the replacement of large numbers of elderly DMUs but also several locomotive-hauled trains as well
this was partially accomplished via the cascading of existing Sprinter units onto other routes. To capitalise on the Class 158's improved onboard amenities in comparison to other rolling stock in use for regional services, the Alphaline branding was launched during the mid-1990s
it was also used for a time in the post-privatisation era.
As a result of British Rail's privatisation in the mid 1990s, the Class 158s were divided amongst various newly-created operators broadly along their existing routes. Due to their relatively young age at that time, most operators elected to retain them for the following decades. Several, such as Northern Rail and Arriva Trains Wales, had their Class 158 fleets modernised and refitted with various new facilities, such modifications often including greater accessibility, onboard passenger information systems, WiFi connectivity, and toilet retention tanks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXGR - The Yorkshire Trading Company is a chain of variety and discount stores founded and based in Northern England, it is a family-run business dating back to 1954 and is now into the third and fourth generations. It operates 33 Yorkshire Trading Company stores from as far north as Alnwick in Northumberland to Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
In 1964, John Nichols opened his first shop in Kingston upon Hull, by 1985 the Nichols family (John, his wife Molly and his two sons Paul and Robert) had eight stores in towns such as Whitby and Bridlington, and in 1995 the store count had increased to 12 with locations in Richmond and Ripon. With the demise of high street giant Woolworths in 2008, 11 more shops were also added to the portfolio.
The business had several speciality stores under different names
James Piper was the name given to a glassware store in Driffield operated by Tom Nichols, John's youngest son. Other store names such as JC Nichols and Barmy Bob's were phased out in 2000 as the company rebranded all of their locations under the Yorkshire Trading Company banner and became a limited company.
In 2015, work was completed on the construction of a new purpose built distribution centre and head office, costing ?7 million, located at Kellythorpe Industrial Estate, Driffield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXGX - The Port of Whitby is an ancient and historic seaport on the North Yorkshire coast of England. The port lies at the mouth of the River Esk, where it enters into the North Sea. A port has been in existence at Whitby since at least the 7th century, when it was used to bring in supplies for Whitby Abbey. The port is famous for being the port of origin for the sailings of Captain Cook, and some of the ships that he sailed on were also built in the harbour.
Commercial cargo ceased in the late 20th century, however, the port is still an important location for the landing of fish.
Fish were being landed at Whitby during the time that the first abbey had been built in 657
The port was never equal to other ports in the area such as Hull or Middlesbrough. This is due to the hinterland that surrounded the port, with Whitby being largely cut-off from overland travel until the 18th and 19th centuries, it had no great industries to export or import for, being surrounded on all sides of the river by moorland (except for the coast to the north). Trade through the port accelerated with the coming of the railways, but its main function was either as a shelter for ships from storms in the North Sea, or as a re-supply point. Between 1702 and 1704, the number of collier ships alone totalled 98, Bridlington, Hull and Scarborough only hosted 48, 28 and 54 respectively. The safe haven almost guaranteed at Whitby (and at Scarborough and Bridlington too), allowed the port to charge a levy towards the upkeep of the harbour and piers. The levy also applied to passing trade of coal from many north-eastern locations, with the levy not being rescinded until 1861
A survey in the 1950s determined that the port at Whitby was not as successful as other neighbouring cargo ports such as Hull, Teesside and West Hartlepool, on account of its lack of urban sprawl, and the absence of warehouses on the dock side with which to store goods in a safe manner before onward export, or inward transportation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY559Y - Northern Powerhouse Rail scaled back AGAIN as Tory says 'not much point' in plan
Proposals to build in full Northern Powerhouse Rail, also called High Speed 3, have been scrapped just weeks after they were restored by ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss
Plans for a high speed railway linking major northern cities have been ripped up again amid vicious spending cuts.
Proposals to build in full Northern Powerhouse Rail, also called High Speed 3, have been scrapped just weeks after they were restored.
The project was ditched as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt bid to plug an estimated ?50billion black hole in public coffers.
No10 confirmed the Government was committed to the Integrated Rail Plan announced last November - which watered down the NPR scheme and axed HS2's eastern leg to save cash in favour of a new ?96bn upgrade plan.
The Government was accused of a Great Train Robbery when it unveiled the controversial blueprint 12 months ago.
Former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said there 'wasn't really much point in going and blasting new tunnels through the Pennines'. During her doomed seven-week premiership, PM Liz Truss reinstated pledges to build HS3 in full, linking the North's six big cities - Newcastle, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool and Manchester Airport.
But Mr Sunak has now reversed that pledge in yet another trashing of his predecessor's promises.
His spokesman said: We are committed to the Integrated Rail Plan, which delivers a high speed line and transport improvements across the North
He said: The line itself can deliver a 33-minute journey from Manchester to Leeds, quadruple nearly the capacity of that line, and do so without having to wait an extra 20 years beyond the delivery of what the upgrade can do.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY55B6 - On 22 May 2017, an Islamist extremist suicide bomber detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb as people were leaving the Manchester Arena following a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande.
Twenty-three people were killed, including the attacker, and 1,017 were injured, many of them children. Several hundred more suffered psychological trauma. The bomber was Salman Ramadan Abedi, a 22-year-old local man of Libyan ancestry. After initial suspicions of a terrorist network, police later said they believed Abedi had largely acted alone, but that others had been aware of his plans. The Islamic State claimed responsibility shortly after the attack.[3] In March 2020, the bomber's brother, Hashem Abedi, was found guilty of 22 counts of murder and attempting to murder 1,017 others, and was sentenced to life in prison.
The incident was the deadliest terrorist attack and the first suicide bombing in the United Kingdom since the 7 July 2005 London bombings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8XH - Edward Stone (1702?1768) was a Church of England cleric who discovered the active ingredient of aspirin.
Life
Edward Stone was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1702. His parents were Edward Stone, a gentleman farmer, and his first wife Elizabeth Reynolds. His mother having died, his father took a second wife, Elizabeth Grubb, in 1707
the Grubb family was to play a major role in Stone's life.
Stone went to Wadham College, Oxford, in 1720, where in 1730 he became a Fellow. In 1728 or 1729 he was ordained deacon and priest, and served as curate at Charlton-on-Otmoor.
Stone at one time lived on the site of the Hitchman Brewery in West Street, Chipping Norton, where a blue plaque has now been erected. He was buried in Horsenden in 1768
He experimented by drying a pound of willow bark and creating a powder which he gave to about fifty persons: it was consistently found to be a powerful astringent and very efficacious in curing agues and intermitting disorders.' He had discovered salicylic acid, the principal metabolite of aspirin. On 25 April 1763, he sent a letter announcing his discovery to George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society.
A less corrosive compound of salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, produced by reacting sodium salicylate with acetyl chloride, was developed from 1897 by Felix Hoffmann and Arthur Eichengr?n. It was marketed by Bayer under the name Aspirin which was registered as a trade name on 23 January 1899. There is little evidence that Stone's idea was taken up by the medical profession. Jeffreys could only find one doctor in Hertfordshire and one pharmacist in Bath who tried using willow bark as a cure for the ague. The latter described it as cheaper than quinine, but never published any findings about its efficacy

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPYF0 - Merseyrail is a commuter rail network serving the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Merseyrail operates 68 railway stations across two lines ? the Northern Line and Wirral Line, which are dedicated 750 V DC third rail electrified lines that serve underground stations in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Merseyrail branding is also applied to stations and 'shared' services on the City Line, which are within the Liverpool City Region but operated by other train operating companies. The City Line services operate on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and the Liverpool to Wigan Line using a mix of AC electric and diesel trains.
The Merseyrail third rail network has 68 stations and 75 miles (121 km) of track, of which 6.5 miles (10.5 km) are underground. It carries approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday, or 34 million passengers per year
The first part of the urban network was opened in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by constructing new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. The full 1970s plans for the network were not realised, but the network has been extended on its peripheries with additional extensions proposed. The extensions were created by electrifying existing lines and then transferring the electrified sections into Merseyrail.
Merseyrail is operated for Merseytravel by 50:50 joint venture Serco-Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The 25-year contract expires in 2028.As of 2015, Serco-Abellio operates a fleet of 59 trains and employs 1,200 people
Services on the electrified Merseyrail network are operated by British Rail Class 507 and Class 508 electric multiple unit trains (EMUs). These replaced pre-war Class 502 (originally constructed by the LMS) and similar Class 503 EMUs. There are 57 trains in service on the network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DTMKPY - Brains (S. A. Brain & Company Ltd.) is a regional brewery based in Cardiff, Wales. It was founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.[1] At its peak, the company controlled more than 250 pubs in South Wales (particularly in Cardiff), Mid Wales and the West Country but the brewer sold most of its pub estate in 2022.[2] The company took over Crown Buckley Brewery in Llanelli in 1997 and Hancock's Brewery in 1999. In 2000, Brains moved to the former Hancock's Brewery just south of Cardiff Central railway station. The Old Brewery, in Cardiff city centre, has been developed into a modern bar and restaurant complex.
The company produces a range of beers under the Brains, Buckley's and Hancock's names. As part of their marketing strategy, Brains use shirt sponsorship for the Wales national rugby union team and the Crusaders Rugby League team

The British Rail Class 397 Civity is built by Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF for lease to TransPennine Express by Eversholt Rail Group
Announcement of new trains was made by FirstGroup when it was confirmed that they would become the next operator of the TransPennine Express franchise from 1 April 2016. In May 2016 it was announced by TransPennine Express that they had ordered twelve five-car electric multiple units from CAF to replace the fleet of ten four-car Class 350/4 Desiro units which presently operate TransPennine Express services between Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland.
Testing of the first set began at the Velim railway test circuit in July 2018.
An option for up to 22 extra units was available to TransPennine Express, but it was not exercised.
Mainline testing of the Class 397 was carried out from Manchester International Depot, operating between the depot and Carlisle via Crewe, the test runs being operated by Rail Operations Group.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN106 - Orkney, Shetland, Inverness, Ayrshire and Fife are among the regions represented in a series of 12 limited edition Tennent's fonts.
Designed to create ?stand out' on the bar, the fonts are currently being rolled out to selected pubs and bars across Scotland.
Eleven regions ? Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Fife, Stirling, Ayrshire, Shetland, Orkney and Inverness ? are represented along with a general Scotland design for outlets outwith the selected regions.
Each of the fonts, created by design agency D8, features landmarks and references from the region it represents, such as Edinburgh's Calton Hill, the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, Aberdeen's Dunnottar Castle, Deep Sea World in Fife, Orkney's Viking longship, shinty in Inverness and Perth's Tay Bridge.
Alan Hay, on-trade sales director at Tennent's, said 250 fonts of each design will be rolled out this summer.
Supporting our customers will always be our priority, and following the success of our customisable founts, we are now rolling out fount designs for specific regions of Scotland, he said.
No other brand knows the Scottish on-trade like we do and we're sure the cultural references on each fount will create a real talking point amongst pub-goers
we can't wait to see how they look in bars around the country.
We want our drinkers to have a quality experience when enjoying a pint of Tennent's, and that starts with how our fount looks on the bar.
The roll out of the limited edition fonts comes after Tennent's extended its partnership with Scottish Rugby in a seven-figure deal.
Under the new agreement, Tennent's will continue its relationship with the Scotland national team and the country's two professional sides: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, alongside the additional title sponsorship of the Scottish domestic leagues.
The brewer will additionally take on the naming rights of the Premiership and National leagues, with the newly-formed Scottish Championship to follow in 2019/2020.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DDW6EJ - Rioja is a wine region in Spain, with denominaci??n de origen calificada (D.O.Ca., Qualified Designation of Origin, the highest category in Spanish wine regulation). Rioja wine is made from grapes grown in the autonomous communities of La Rioja and Navarre, and the Basque province of ?lava. Rioja is further subdivided into three zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa. Many wines have traditionally blended fruit from all three regions, though there is a slow growth in single-zone wines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA01 - The Wirral line is one of two commuter railway lines operated by Merseyrail and centred on Merseyside, England, the other being the Northern line. A third line of the Merseyrail network, the City Line, is not operated by the Merseyrail train operating company, though it also receives funding from Merseytravel, the passenger transport executive for Merseyside.
The Wirral line connects Liverpool to the Wirral Peninsula via the Mersey Railway Tunnel, with branches to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. Beneath Liverpool, the line follows a clockwise circular route in a single-track tunnel called the Loop, built in the early 1970s.
The line was created by the amalgamation of several historic railways, and has carried its present name since the opening of the Merseyrail network by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 October 1978 during the British Rail period. The Wirral line is fully electrified with a DC third rail, and has existed in its current form since May 1994 with the start of electric services to Ellesmere Port. A total of 34 stations are served, with connections available to mainline services at Liverpool Lime Street and Chester. The line also connects with the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network at Liverpool Central and Moorfields.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA9J - Merseyrail is both a train operating company (TOC) and a commuter rail network in and around Liverpool City Region, England. It is a part of Serco-Abellio, and is formed of two electrified lines of the National Rail network known as the Northern Line and the Wirral Line which run underground in central Liverpool. A third line, separate from the electrified network, is named the City Line, which is a term used by the governing body Merseytravel referring to local services it sponsors on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and Liverpool to Wigan Line operated by Northern.
The Merseyrail network has 68 stations and 75 miles of route, of which 6.5 miles are underground. Carrying approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday,[6] or 34 million passengers per year, it forms the most heavily used urban railway network in the UK outside London. The network is operated by a joint venture between franchise holder Serco and Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The contract is for 25 years expiring in 2028. Serco-Abellio operate a fleet of 59 trains and as of 2015, employ 1,200 people.
The large comprehensive urban network was formed in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by the construction of new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. Although financial constraints have prevented some of the 1970s plans for the network being realised, the network has been extended, with additional extensions proposed.
The Merseyrail name became the official brand for the network in the days of British Rail, surviving several franchise holders, although the name was not used by Arriva when holding the franchise. Despite this, Merseytravel continued the Merseyrail branding at stations, allowing the name to be adopted colloquially. Merseyrail is referred to as Merseyrail Electrics by National Rail Enquiries, and as Serco/Abellio Merseyrail by Merseytravel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8NX50 - The Identity and Passport Service was established on 1 April 2006, following the passing of the Identity Cards Act 2006 which merged the UK Passport Service with the Home Office's Identity Cards programme to form the new executive agency.
In 2007, the ninety British diplomatic missions that issued passports were consolidated into seven regional passport processing centres (RPPCs) based in D?sseldorf, Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris, Pretoria, Washington, D.C. and Wellington with an additional centre in Dublin.
The Identity Documents Act 2010 repealed the Identity Cards Act 2006, and required the cancellation of all identity cards and the destruction of all data held.
On 1 April 2011 responsibility for British passports issued overseas passed from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to IPS. The printing of passports issued overseas had been done in the UK since August 2011 and the administrative work performed at these RPPCs was repatriated to the UK during the 2013?14 financial year. From April 2014 all British nationals based overseas had to apply for their passports directly to the UK.
The Identity and Passport Service was renamed HM Passport Office on 13 May 2013 in an effort to reflect the agency's departure from its association with the scrapped National Identity Register and ID cards. The government stated in the press release that The inclusion of 'Her Majesty's' in the title recognises that passports are the property of the Crown, bear the royal coat of arms and are issued under the royal prerogative.
HMPO's executive agency status was removed on 1 October 2014 and it became a division within the Home Office. Its board reports directly to the Home Office's executive management board

The purpose is to protect the surface of a table or any other surface where the user might place their beverage.
Public houses usually will have beermats spread out across the tables. They are used not just to protect the surface of the table, but, as they are usually made of paper, they can also be used to absorb condensation dripping along the glass or serve as an ad-hoc notepad. Beermats are often branded with trademarks or alcohol advertising. Beermats are not to be confused with bar mats, rectangular pieces of rubber or absorbent material used to protect the counter top and soak up spilled drinks in a bar or pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB66 - A classic regional English ale. Whitbread chief executive Peter Jarvis commented in 1995 that:
It was very fortuitous that the brewery was in Manchester. To outsiders, Manchester is a very attractive place ? known the world over for soccer, art, music and broadcasting. It would be difficult to have a Cream of Wolverhampton even though Banks's beer is very good. People do not aspire to visit Wolverhampton. On the whole they try to by-pass it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6HY59 - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network consists of six lines which radiate from Manchester city centre and terminate at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, Didsbury, Eccles, and Rochdale. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP In 2013/14, 29.2 million passenger journeys were made on the system, also known as Manchester Metrolink.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor north?south connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWT - Boddingtons Brewery was a regional brewery in Manchester, England, which owned pubs throughout the North West. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head. In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries. Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser?Busch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.
The Boddingtons two bees logo was introduced in 1900. The bees are a symbol of Manchester, from a time when it was a hive of industry, but the two bees also represent a pun on the company name of Boddingtons Breweries.
Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. The tagline from 1987 until 1991 was If you don't get Boddies, you'll just get bitter. Under Whitbread's custodianship the comedian Frankie Howerd fronted the campaign in a series of six television advertisements which mainly aired in the North West in 1990?1991. Lowe Howard-Spink was the advertising agency responsible for the Howerd advertisements.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H3FKFW - Robins Pie and Mash shop closes after more than 30 years serving Ilford.
Robins Pie and Mash, Chapel Road, Ilford, which is being run by the fifth generation of a family, closed on Saturday.
Owner June Robins said: There is still demand for pie and mash but unfortunately this is not the case in Ilford any more. Customers seem to want a different type of food.
It was a very sad day when we closed. We first opened the branch over 30 years ago but things have become a lot more expensive, especially as we get all our meat from Scotland.
The company, which has recently started supplying frozen meals to the Asda supermarket chain, also has a number of other branches including one in High Street, Wanstead.
Ms Robins added: When we informed our customers we would be shutting they just kept asking why.
I don't think pie and mash is dying out as we have a lot of demand in other areas including at weddings and football games, including West Ham United.
But times are changing and people seem to want universal food such as pizza and burgers. Pie and mash has a limited regional appeal.
Traditionally pie and mash dates back to the 19th century, when Dutch ships delivered live eels, which were used in pies, to Billingsgate Market.
Customer, Paul Scott, of Sandhurst Drive, Goodmayes, added: This is a great shame and customers aren't happy about it especially as there will now be no more pie and mash shops in Ilford.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKET6 - Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where C??dmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship. Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7MCB - The Belfast Telegraph is a daily newspaper published in Belfast, Northern Ireland, by Independent News & Media.
It was first published as the Belfast Evening Telegraph on 1 September 1870 by brothers William and George Baird. Its first edition cost half a penny and ran to four pages covering the Franco-Prussian war and local news.
The evening edition of the newspaper was originally called the Sixth Late, and Sixth Late Tele was a familiar cry made by vendors in Belfast City Centre in the past.
Its competitors are The News Letter and The Irish News but the local editions of the London-based red tops are also competitors, selling at a cheaper price than the 'Tele'.
The Belfast Telegraph was entirely broadsheet until 19 February 2005, when the Saturday morning edition was introduced and all Saturday editions were converted to compact. The weekday morning Compact Edition, launched on 22 March 2005, struggled to replicate the evening newspaper's success. Its editorial content has been much more tabloid, with a greater entertainment story count than the evening paper. Much prominence is given to English-based sport, and some general features and columns are shared with The Independent and Irish Independent.
The paper now publishes two editions daily, Belfast Telegraph final edition and the North West Telegraph which is distributed in Derry.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world

The Great Northern Warehouse is the former railway goods warehouse of the Great Northern Railway in Manchester city centre, England. It has been redeveloped as a car park and leisure complex. The building is located at the junction of Deansgate and Peter Street in the city centre. It was granted Grade II* listed building status on 3 October 1974.
The warehouse is a hugely impressive block, of blue brick below (and) red brick with blue brick dressings above. It was built to be fireproof with a steel frame, and built on a rectangular plan, 267 feet long by 217 feet wide and five storeys high, with 27 windows on the east and west sides and 17 windows on the north and south ends. All four sides have friezes lettered in white brick reading Great Northern Railway Company's Goods Warehouse. The warehouse was built above the Manchester and Salford Junction Canal, and a dock beneath was constructed to allow goods to be transferred to and from canal barges via shafts and a complex system of haulage using hydraulic power.[2] It is a unique survival of a three-way railway goods exchange station, serving the railway, canal and road networks of the Manchester region.
The development is owned by Capital & Regional and as of March 2013 comprises an AMC cinema, a casino, a bowling alley, bars, a Lifestyle Fitness gym, and a multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHDC - Scotland's Low Emission Zones

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGPNPX - Protect and Survive was a public information series on civil defence produced by the British government during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is intended to inform British citizens on how to protect themselves during a nuclear attack, and consists of a mixture of pamphlets, radio broadcasts, and public information films. The series had originally been intended for distribution only in the event of dire national emergency, but provoked such intense public interest that the pamphlets were authorised for general release.
Protect and Survive had its origins in civil defence leaflets dating back to 1938, titled The Protection of Your Home Against Air Raids. These advised the homeowner on what to do in the event of air attack. This evolved as the nature of warfare and geopolitics changed, with the pamphlets concurrently updated into Advising the Householder on Protection against Nuclear Attack in 1963. This document, of which 500,000 copies were made, garnered considerable public and government criticism when it was first released for its lack of explanations or conveyance of the reasoning behind the advice that was given. The Estimates Committee were similarly bemused by the advice, calling for its withdrawal. Civil defence personnel were summoned to House of Commons meetings in which they responded to all the points of criticism that were raised. The 1963 pamphlet was then accompanied by a series of public information films produced in 1964, called Civil Defence Information Bulletins. These films were intended to be broadcast in a state of emergency. Pamphlets similar to those prepared in 1963 briefly appeared in Peter Watkins' controversial 1965 BBC docudrama The War Game, in a scene where they were distributed to people's homes. The 1964 Bulletins were not depicted in this controversial film.
The fallout radiation advice in Protect and Survive was based on 1960s fallout shelter experiments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6J32W - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF1355 - Saddam Hussein playing cards where Saddam is the Ace of spades - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War and again in World War II?Army Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars today?and in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, and seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNF - a special treat for Easter - classic Swedish dammsugare. The name means vaccum cleaners, and that's a very strange name for a cookie indeed. The reason? Well, traditionally these are made with lime-green marzipan and chocolate dipped ends, and maybe there was an early vaccum cleaner model that looked like that..? I really don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer out there, so it'll have to remain a mystery.
And it has many names, dammsugare just happens to be most widely used one. Punschrulle is also quite common, getting it's name from the liqueur used to flavor the filling. Punsch, as I've written before, is made from arrak and very sweet. If you can't find it, try using something like Amaretto or Frangelico instead - won't be the same, but it'll be really good.
