Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4DB - Large Reform UK campaign placard for Rob Kenyon displayed above a residential garden in Hindley, an area within the Makerfield parliamentary constituency in Greater Manchester, England. The bright blue sign carries the wording I'm voting Rob Kenyon and 18th June, alongside a candidate photograph and Reform UK branding, partly framed by garden trees and the roofline of a nearby house. The image records the street-level visibility of Reform UK during a closely watched by-election in a former Labour stronghold, where the party promoted Kenyon as a local candidate and tradesman rather than a career politician. Reform UK and several media reports described Kenyon as a plumber, and that framing was central to the party's attempt to present him as a simpleton local working-class challenger to Andy Burnham. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of by-election campaigning, voter allegiance, right-wing populism, northern English politics, constituency-level political identity and the contest for support in post-industrial towns around Wigan. Its value is in the domestic setting: the placard is not shown at a rally, but in a garden above ordinary housing, making the campaign message part of the visual language of a neighbourhood. The scene can illustrate stories about Reform UK's appeal on housing estates, political branding in local streets, anti-establishment messaging, voter disillusionment, party competition on the right and the challenge to Labour in areas that historically returned Labour MPs. It also works as a broader image of contemporary British politics, where candidate posters, simple slogans and claims of local authenticity are used to build trust with residents. The picture should be used with clear editorial context, as Reform UK's campaign, like much hard-right and populist politics in Britain, has generated controversy over immigration rhetoric, online comments and culture-war positioning

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4DP - Selective colour documentary photograph shows a large red Vote Andy For Us Andy Burnham campaign poster fixed to the gable end of a traditional northern terrace house in the Makerfield constituency, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 by-election campaign. Most of the street scene is rendered in black and white, while the red Labour-style campaign banner remains highlighted, making the political message stand out against the grey wall, cloudy sky, rough ground and parked white van in the foreground. The image captures a striking example of doorstep and neighbourhood election publicity, where national political questions are played out on ordinary residential streets. The bold block lettering, cartoon portrait and oversized gable-end placement give the scene a strong visual identity, useful for editorial coverage of Labour campaigning, Andy Burnham's return-to-Westminster bid, northern England politics, by-election messaging, voter mood, political branding, working-class communities, and the changing political landscape in former Labour heartlands. Makerfield became a nationally watched contest because Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham was selected as Labour's candidate, with the by-election expected to test Labour support and Reform UK pressure in the North West. The House of Commons Library also set out the unusual constitutional angle: Burnham could stand for Parliament while serving as mayor, but would lose the mayoralty if elected as an MP. The photograph's monochrome treatment gives the scene a moody, unsettled atmosphere, while the isolated red poster suggests campaign urgency, party identity and a contested electoral moment. It could illustrate stories about Labour's future direction, Greater Manchester devolution, local political loyalties, leadership speculation, campaign communications, political street art, democratic participation, by-election battlegrounds and the visual language of UK elections in 2026.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4DW - Moody black and white photograph shows Labour campaign garden placards reading Vote Andy For Us outside terraced homes in the Hindley area of the Makerfield constituency, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 by-election campaign. The low viewpoint, grey sky, overhead wires, front gardens and repeated poster design give the image a strong documentary feel, capturing how national political drama is translated into ordinary residential streets. The placards feature a stylised portrait of Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Labour candidate for Makerfield, with the slogan presented in bold block lettering. The image is useful for editorial coverage of parliamentary by-elections, Labour Party campaigning, Greater Manchester politics, northern England, working-class communities, voter mood, doorstep politics, garden poster displays, election branding and the relationship between local identity and national leadership speculation. Makerfield, which includes Wigan, Ashton-in-Makerfield and surrounding communities, was scheduled to vote on Thursday 18 June 2026 after the resignation of the previous Labour MP. The contest drew wider attention because Burnham's attempt to return to Westminster raised questions about the mayoralty, Labour's national direction and the political pressure from Reform UK in former Labour heartlands. The monochrome treatment emphasises uncertainty, cloudy weather and a tense campaign atmosphere rather than the bright colours normally associated with political advertising. It could illustrate stories about Labour in the North West, Andy Burnham's public profile, by-election strategy, grassroots campaigning, street-level political expression, the future of devolution in Greater Manchester, public trust in politics, voter fatigue, and the changing electoral map in post-industrial towns around Wigan

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGC - Documentary editorial photograph shows a blue Reform UK roundel sign mounted on a wooden post in a large garden off Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow logo and black lettering against a bright blue background, standing above a green hedge with trees, sky and a glimpse of suburban housing behind it. The image was taken in daylight under a bright, lightly clouded sky, giving the scene a calm residential feel while still carrying a sharp political message. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party associated with Nigel Farage, and the party's modern campaign themes have focused heavily on anti-establishment politics, immigration, borders, public services and voter anger with the main parties. In Makerfield, the by-election was due on 18 June 2026 after stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, opening the way for Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, to contest the seat for Labour. Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, creating a high-profile Labour versus Reform contest in a long-standing Labour heartland. This close-up image is useful for illustrating Reform UK campaigning, right-wing populism, red wall politics, northern voter disillusionment, Labour heartlands, by-elections, political realignment, tactical voting, doorstep politics and the visibility of party support in private gardens. For stock buyers, the value lies in the uncluttered Reform UK branding, the ordinary garden setting and the precise connection to a nationally watched parliamentary contest. It works as a simple but powerful visual shorthand for the attempt by Nigel Farage's party to turn local dissatisfaction in post-industrial Greater Manchester into votes, and for the pressure facing Labour in places where political loyalty can no longer be taken for granted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKH0 - Tall vertical version of editorial photograph shows two rival political signs in a front garden setting in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. In the foreground, a red Labour VOTE ANDY FOR US' poster shows a cartoon likeness of Andy Burnham in his familiar black top and glasses, while a blue Reform UK roundel sign is visible just behind the hedge. The two signs create a compact visual contest between Burnham, the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist. The image was taken in daylight under a cloudy North West England sky, with terraced and semi-detached houses, a brick wall, hedges and a quiet suburban road giving the scene a strongly local, doorstep politics feel. Burnham is often nicknamed the King of the North' in political and media commentary, reflecting his regional profile since becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017 and winning further mayoral terms in 2021 and 2024. The Makerfield by-election was due on 18 June 2026 and drew national attention because Burnham's possible return to Westminster was linked with Labour's future direction and speculation about Sir Keir Starmer's leadership. Reform UK's challenge added anstock-photo/gotonysmith-Other.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>other layer, with Kenyon's candidacy attracting scrutiny over past social media posts and debate about the party's appeal in Labour heartlands. This image is useful for stories about Labour campaigning, Reform UK pressure, red wall politics, northern identity, voter choice, by-elections, populism, political branding, tactical voting and the everyday visibility of party loyalty in residential streets. For stock buyers, its strength is the juxtaposition of two competing signs: one personalised around Burnham's recognisable cartoon image, the other using Reform UK's simple directional branding, both bidding for attention before a closely watched parliamentary contest in Makerfield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKKP - Documentary editorial photograph shows a small Reform UK VOTE REFORM UK 18TH JUNE' leaflet displayed discreetly in the front window of a suburban red-brick house in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester. The white-framed window, domestic ornaments, reflections, brickwork and overhanging leaves give the image an intimate residential setting, quite different from the larger roadside banners and garden placards seen elsewhere in the Makerfield by-election campaign. The image was taken in daylight under a bright but cloudy sky, and the small blue leaflet is a subtle but clear sign of Reform UK support inside an ordinary home. The Makerfield by-election was confirmed for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, with Politico and ITV reporting that the move allowed Andy Burnham to seek a return to stock-photo/gotonysmith-Westminster.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Westminster. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021 and 2024, and is often nicknamed the King of the North' because of his strong regional profile. Reform UK's candidate Robert Kenyon was reported by the Guardian as a local plumber and army reservist, while Nigel Farage said Reform would put major effort into the contest. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, window posters, private voter support, Labour versus Reform, red wall politics, political realignment, populist messaging, local democracy, parliamentary by-elections, tactical voting and the contest for working-class support in a traditional Labour area. It also speaks to the quieter side of election campaigning, where political allegiance is shown not at a rally or hustings but through a modest sign placed behind glass. For stock buyers, the value lies in the small scale of the leaflet, the domestic setting and the link to a nationally watched contest in which Burnham's Westminster ambitions, Kenyon's anti-establishment appeal and Farage's Reform UK strategy all met on Ashton-in-Makerfield streets.

The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow branding, pointing forward against a blue background, with traditional terraced houses, brick walls, railings, chimney stacks, overhead wires and a cloudy North West England sky behind it. The image has strong street-level political value because it places a national right-wing populist party message into a local working-class housing setting. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party, the vehicle associated with Nigel Farage, and Britannica describes Farage as having launched the Brexit Party in 2019 before rebranding it as Reform UK in 2021. The Makerfield by-election was scheduled for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, creating a nationally watched contest between Andy Burnham for Labour and Robert Kenyon for Reform UK. Kenyon was reported as a local plumber and army reservist, while Burnham is the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester. Reform UK's campaign sought to mobilise voters around anti-establishment themes, immigration, borders and public dissatisfaction, while Labour presented Burnham as a recognised regional figure with a record linked to growth, devolution and the Bee Network transport programme. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, Brexit legacy politics, Labour heartlands, red wall constituencies, working-class voter identity, political realignment, populism, immigration messaging, tactical voting, local democracy and public trust in northern England. For stock buyers, the strength lies in the contrast between the crisp campaign roundel and the everyday terrace backdrop, a compact visual shorthand for how the Makerfield contest turned ordinary residential streets into visible markers of national political change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG87P - Editorial street photograph showing a Free Qur'an English translation stall on Briggate in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire, with Discover Islam blue balloons, a small display sign, literature boxes, a trolley and members of the public passing through the pedestrian shopping area. The scene records visible faith outreach in a busy British retail street, where Islamic literature is being offered free to people interested in learning about Islam. It is useful for features on religion in public life, community engagement, interfaith understanding, Islamic education, Muslim outreach, charity literature distribution, public space, free speech, diversity and multicultural Britain. The image also connects to debates about high streets as civic meeting places, not just shopping areas, where campaigns, charities, faith groups and public information stands compete for attention alongside commercial brands. H.Samuel signage in the background helps place the image on Briggate, one of Leeds' main shopping streets, and the official H.Samuel store listing gives its Leeds Briggate address as 54-55 Briggate, Leeds LS1 6AS. The people in the photograph are incidental adults in a public place and should be described neutrally, without implying their beliefs, attitudes or involvement. Weather appears cool and overcast, with people wearing jackets and soft daylight falling across the pavement, suggesting a typical changeable northern English centre day outside the summer heat. The image has commercial editorial value for stories about Islam in the UK, religious literacy, Qur'an translations, street-based public engagement, social cohesion, minority faith visibility, urban culture, Leeds communities, public realm use, shopping streets, charity stalls, belief, identity and contemporary British society. It can also illustrate neutral coverage of community information work and the provision of free religious texts for people who are curious about Islamic belief and practice.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENK89 - Wigan's Voice exhibition display inside the Museum of Wigan Life, photographed in 2026, with large red, white and black entrance graphics and Wigan Council branding. The exhibition title has added contemporary resonance after the 2026 Wigan local election results, when Reform UK made major gains across the borough and Labour lost a substantial number of seats, although Labour still remained the largest group on the council. The image can be used carefully to illustrate the idea of Wigan finding or changing its political and cultural voice, but the exhibition itself should not be misrepresented as an election display. It was promoted by Wigan Council as a museum exhibition exploring the borough's heritage, culture and changing landscape, structured around nature's voice, traditional voice and community voice. The graphic panel reads Wigan's Voice and Until 25 July 2026, placing the photograph within a specific local cultural moment. The image is useful for editorial subjects including Wigan identity, local democracy, public culture, civic history, museum exhibitions, community voice, post-industrial northern towns, Greater Manchester politics, local government change and the role of museums in reflecting place and belonging. The recent election context adds news value, especially where stories examine Labour's weakening grip in parts of its traditional North West heartlands and the rise of Reform UK as a right-wing populist challenger. The scene appears indoors under museum or gallery lighting, with visitors, display areas and exhibition structures visible in the background. The photograph works best as a documentary image about Wigan's public identity and changing civic mood, rather than as direct evidence of any one political cause. It should be captioned with care, distinguishing between the museum's cultural exhibition and the separate 2026 local election result.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution describes itself as the charity that saves lives at sea, providing lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and flood rescue. Its position on Channel small boats is that lifeboats are launched when HM Coastguard reports people may be in danger at sea, and that maritime law requires vessels aware of people in distress to take reasonable steps to assist. That mission has drawn criticism from anti-immigration campaigners and some political voices who argue that rescuing asylum seekers may encourage crossings, assist people-smuggling gangs or blur the line between humanitarian rescue and border control. Supporters counter that lifeboat crews are not immigration officers, that people in small overloaded boats are at real risk of drowning, and that the moral and legal duty at sea is to save lives first and leave asylum decisions to the proper authorities later. The controversy therefore sits between public safety, charity neutrality, border enforcement, refugee protection, people-smuggling, national politics and media-driven culture war. The image can illustrate both the practical mission of lifeboat rescue and the wider argument about whether a charity should ever discriminate between casualties based on nationality, immigration status or how they came to be in danger. The red flag adds a clear danger and warning element, strengthening use for stories about unsafe water, beach hazards, drowning prevention, coastal storms, lifeguard advice and the risks of the sea. It is a strong editorial stock image for coverage of the RNLI, small boat crossings, Channel rescues, humanitarian duty, misinformation, anti-migrant protest, public donations, charity values and the difficult business of rescue ethics

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P6G5 - A Motability Centre advertising board stands outside the Volkswagen dealership in Warrington, Cheshire, promoting vehicle offers available through the Motability Scheme for eligible recipients of qualifying disability benefits. The sign highlights advance payment deals on Volkswagen models and sits in front of the modern showroom frontage, creating a clear editorial image of the connection between the motor trade, disability mobility support and consumer style promotion in the UK car market. As a stock and documentary photograph, it is useful for themes such as accessible transport, disability support, car leasing, dealership marketing, mobility rights and the practical role of vehicles in helping disabled people maintain independence.
The image also has added relevance because the Motability Scheme has recently been drawn into political and media controversy in Britain, with criticism focused on the availability of higher value vehicles, scrutiny of eligibility perceptions and wider arguments about welfare spending and non-visible disabilities. That background makes the photograph suitable not only for motoring or retail coverage, but also for stories about disability policy, benefit stigma, public misunderstanding, transport inequality and the importance of mobility in daily life. The board's sales language and listed advance payments give the image a strong commercial realism, showing how the scheme is presented to customers in the real world rather than as an abstract policy idea.
For Alamy and wider editorial use, the picture works across subjects including PIP-linked transport support, disability benefits, vehicle access, UK dealership advertising, social policy debate, car affordability and the intersection between welfare systems and mainstream automotive retail. It's particularly useful because it captures a live public issue through a straightforward street-level scene, combining branding, pricing, disability mobility support & current political sensitivity

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DX14M3 - A Reform UK campaign placard staked into a front garden in Denton, Greater Manchester, promoting the candidate Matt Goodwin and urging support in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election. The turquoise sign is clearly readable, carrying the slogan I'm voting MATT GOODWIN and the date 26th February, alongside the circular Reform UK logo. Behind the sign sits a typical red brick suburban home with a bay window and low garden planting, placing the campaign message firmly in the everyday domestic setting where much UK electioneering is seen at street level. Shot in late winter, the shrubs and hedging look seasonal and subdued, with daylight that suggests cool conditions and changeable skies. The image works as a strong editorial illustration of modern British politics, local campaigning, and voter persuasion, showing how parties use simple, highly legible branding and date specific messaging to signal support and visibility in residential neighbourhoods. It also documents the visual language of a contemporary UK by-election, including typography, slogans, party identity, and the use of private garden space as a platform for public political expression.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APBE - Close view of an internal Hackney Council staff poster displayed in a glazed white frame, carrying the stark message that the council needs to save £52 million over the next three years. The blue poster uses large bold white lettering, an oversized pound figure and cog graphics over a faint civic building backdrop, giving it the polished but unmistakably serious feel of a local authority transformation campaign. A small footer directs staff to the Hackney intranet transformation page, making this a workplace communication aimed at employees rather than a public advertising poster. The image is especially topical because Hackney mayoral and local council elections are due next month, so the savings message lands in the middle of a live political and financial debate about how public services are funded, protected and reshaped. It works well as an editorial illustration of council austerity, municipal budget pressures, savings targets, transformation programmes, public sector reform, service redesign, local democracy and pre-election messaging. Hackney, an inner London borough with an elected mayoral system, has for years faced the same broad pressures seen across English local government, including rising demand for statutory services, homelessness and temporary accommodation costs, inflation and long running funding strain. The wording on the poster matches Hackney Council documents describing a £52m budget gap over three years, so the sign captures a real moment in the borough's financial story. Reflections on the glazing, the white frame and the documentary close crop reinforce the sense of a routine office corridor or staff area, where difficult corporate realities are reduced to one blunt number for employees to absorb. As a record image it also has local historical value, capturing how Hackney Council presented its transformation agenda to staff ahead of a borough-wide vote to elect the Mayor and all 57 councillors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM031 - A close documentary image of a UK Parliamentary general election ballot paper for the Warrington South constituency, photographed inside a polling booth with the official pencil ready for marking a choice. The ballot lists a range of candidates and political parties visible on the paper, including Labour, Conservative, Reform UK, Green Party, Liberal Democrats, the Social Democratic Party and an independent candidate. The scene is useful for illustrating democratic participation, voter choice, political pluralism and the practical mechanics of casting a vote in Britain. It shows the familiar quiet moment before a ballot is completed, with the paper laid flat on the dark booth surface, the attached polling station pencil beside it and party logos printed in the right-hand column. The image has strong editorial relevance for the 2024 UK general election, Warrington South, Cheshire politics, constituency contests, electoral administration, polling stations, ballot design, voter identity rules, local democracy, political campaigning and parliamentary representation. It can also support features on first past the post elections, turnout, tactical voting, public trust, protest votes, party competition and the changing political landscape in the North West of England. The visible mix of parties makes the photograph commercially useful for neutral political coverage, election explainers and civic education, as it represents a broad choice rather than focusing on one party alone. Warrington South has been a closely watched parliamentary seat and the official parliamentary result records the 2024 contest as a Labour hold by Sarah Hall after seven candidates stood. The photograph is especially relevant to coverage of polling day, ballot papers, voting booths, candidate lists, constituency democracy, voter behaviour, local government areas and the administration of UK elections.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX1811 - Former constituency office signage for Sir Jake Berry in Darwen, Lancashire, photographed with the Darwen church tower visible in the background. The sign identifies Jake Berry as Member of Parliament for Darwen and includes a constituency office telephone number, reflecting the public-facing casework role of MPs before the 2024 general election. Berry represented Rossendale and Darwen from 2010 until Parliament was dissolved on 30 May 2024, according to the UK Parliament's official member record, and he lost the seat at the 2024 general election. The image has later political significance because Berry, a former Conservative Party chairman and cabinet minister under Liz Truss, defected from the Conservatives to Reform UK in July 2025. ITV News reported that he said his former party had lost their way when he announced the move, while The Guardian described it as one of Reform UK's most high-profile Conservative defections. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of party switching, Conservative decline, Reform UK growth, right wing and populist politics, northern English constituencies, Red Wall political change, local democracy, constituency casework, former MP offices, political branding and the changing landscape of British politics after the 2024 general election. It can also illustrate the contrast between the routine local work of an MP's office and the national political symbolism of high-profile defections to Nigel Farage's Reform UK. Care is needed in captioning, because the sign shows historic MP status: Berry is no longer a Member of Parliament, so current captions should describe this as a former constituency office or historic signage rather than an active MP office. The image also works for stories about parliamentary representation, local advice surgeries, constituency boundaries, Darwen and Lancashire politics, Conservative Party fragmentation, anti-immigration politics, public trust, political realignment and the use of high-street office
Former MP Jake Berry's Darwen constituency office sign, later notable after his July 2025 defection

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A93 - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPHMW - Interior view of customers socialising and drinking inside The Grapes, a long-established traditional public house and Porters Ale House located on Roscoe Street in Liverpool city centre, Merseyside, England. The image shows a busy bar area with drinkers gathered around the wooden counter, cask ale hand pumps, bar staff serving customers and the warm, informal atmosphere associated with Britain's traditional pub culture. Decorative lighting, shelves of drinks and classic pub furnishings help create an authentic local character that contrasts with the more corporate style of modern chain bars. The Grapes is well known amongst Liverpool real ale drinkers and visitors seeking independent pubs with a strong local identity.
Liverpool has one of the richest pub traditions in the United Kingdom, reflecting its history as a major port city, commercial centre and gateway for migration, trade and tourism. Traditional pubs such as The Grapes continue to play an important social role, providing places for conversation, community interaction and leisure away from home and work. Real ale and cask beer remain an important part of the British hospitality sector, supported by organisations such as CAMRA, which campaigns for the preservation of traditional brewing and pub culture. Independent ale houses often attract both local regulars and tourists exploring Liverpool's music, cultural and sporting heritage.
The scene captures everyday urban life in a city centre drinking establishment, with customers standing at the bar, chatting, waiting to be served and enjoying alcoholic beverages in a relaxed environment. Images such as this are frequently used to illustrate subjects including British pub culture, hospitality businesses, nightlife, tourism, leisure spending, social behaviour, real ale drinking, city centre economies, independent retail and the continuing importance of traditional pubs within modern Britain. The warm indoor lighting and welcoming atmosphere is evident

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTC - This image shows a row of traditional cask ale hand pumps from Joseph Holt, one of Manchester's best-known historic breweries, displayed on a pub bar in Manchester city centre. The pump clips include well-established Holt beers such as Holt Mild, Holt Bitter, and Two Hoots, reflecting the brewery's long association with north-west England pub culture.
Founded in 1849, Joseph Holt Brewery remains an important part of Manchester's brewing heritage, with its beers commonly found in tied and free houses across the region. The wooden pump handles, branded badges, and polished bar setting evoke the classic British public house interior, closely associated with cask-conditioned real ale and CAMRA-style drinking traditions.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British pubs, real ale culture, brewing heritage, hospitality interiors, and Manchester social life, and would work well in features on UK beer, traditional pubs, or regional identity.

Iconic pub The Woodman to close after 'HS2 works' and cost of living crisis 'kills' business
The cult pub plans to sell as much beer as possible before liquidators get their hands on it after being 'isolated' by HS2 works
One of Birmingham's oldest pubs is calling last orders for the final time. Despite putting up a brave fight, The Woodman pub has thrown in the towel after years of being 'isolated by HS2 works'.
The iconic Victorian venue, based on New Canal Street, by Millennium Point, says it has faced an uphill battle ever since work began for Curzon Street railway station located 20-feet away. Roads leading to the back-street boozer were cut off and cones, scaffolding and barriers became synonymous with the pub's identity.
Last year, general manager Will Young said it was miraculous that the 125-year-old pub still traded on the heels of the pandemic. He hoped the venue would survive HS2 and Covid disruptions and come out the other side stronger and on a whole new level.
But sadly, it is not to be. The beloved watering hole has announced it will close its doors permanently after being ravaged.
It said: Friends, family, regular customers and those who we see less regularly....it's finally happened. Nine years after rescuing the pub from dilapidation, The Woodman will be ceasing to trade.
We have battled hard to keep our favourite pub in the world open through adversity. But in the end, the combination of the relentless HS2 encroachment (which has begun to feel like there is no end in sight), the pandemic, the cost of living crisis and the soaring fuel prices...have beaten us.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JDN - Identity Ireland is a minor political party in Ireland. A right-wing to far-right party, it has no representation at local or national level. It was launched in Dublin on 22 July 2015. Its founders are Gary Allen, Peter O'Loughlin and Alan Tighe. O'Loughlin, the party's national spokesperson, contested the 2016 Irish general election and 2019 European Parliament election
Identity Ireland states that it favours Irish sovereignty by leaving the European Union and a return to the Irish pound. The party supports a controlled border policy in order to curtail the immigration that, it says, is putting strain on the Irish welfare system. It also supports more careful vetting of incoming asylum seekers. It supports the Irish branch of Pegida, and has joined the Fortress Europe coalition. It advocates the introduction of a two strike law for serious offences, as well as the re-introduction of penal labour. It supports keeping Ireland's neutrality. It also advocated in favour of Brexit
Identity Ireland has been accused of being racist. Some of its press conferences and meetings, and its launch, have been disrupted by protesters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54PEH - A close-up editorial image of a vintage Calais Port passport stamp dated 3 October 1988, showing a French Police Nationale immigration marking printed onto a passport page. The image captures the black ink border control stamp against the detailed security pattern of the document paper, creating a strong archival and documentary travel image with clear historical value. The wording Calais Port and the 1988 date make it especially useful for subjects linked to cross-Channel journeys, European travel history, ferry travel, passport control, border formalities and the routine bureaucracy of international movement before later changes to European border arrangements.
Calais has long been one of the most important gateways between France and Britain, handling generations of passengers arriving by ferry through one of the busiest Channel crossings in Europe. A passport stamp such as this records a real moment of travel and also reflects the administrative culture of the time, when passport inspection and visible entry markings were a familiar part of many journeys between the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Because the image is tightly framed and highly legible, it works well for editorial stories about travel history, identity documents, migration, customs and immigration procedures, ferry terminals, tourism archives and the visual language of official paperwork.
The photograph also has wider stock value for themes such as nostalgia, vintage travel documents, historical border security, transport heritage, bureaucracy, documentation, European mobility and the material culture of travel. The crisp date, place name and official French wording give the image strong authenticity, while the close crop and textured paper background make it visually useful as a reference image, educational illustration or design-led editorial asset. It is an effective documentary record of a small but telling detail from late twentieth century travel between Britain and France.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8NX50 - The Identity and Passport Service was established on 1 April 2006, following the passing of the Identity Cards Act 2006 which merged the UK Passport Service with the Home Office's Identity Cards programme to form the new executive agency.
In 2007, the ninety British diplomatic missions that issued passports were consolidated into seven regional passport processing centres (RPPCs) based in Düsseldorf, Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris, Pretoria, Washington, D.C. and Wellington with an additional centre in Dublin.
The Identity Documents Act 2010 repealed the Identity Cards Act 2006, and required the cancellation of all identity cards and the destruction of all data held.
On 1 April 2011 responsibility for British passports issued overseas passed from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to IPS. The printing of passports issued overseas had been done in the UK since August 2011 and the administrative work performed at these RPPCs was repatriated to the UK during the 201314 financial year. From April 2014 all British nationals based overseas had to apply for their passports directly to the UK.
The Identity and Passport Service was renamed HM Passport Office on 13 May 2013 in an effort to reflect the agency's departure from its association with the scrapped National Identity Register and ID cards. The government stated in the press release that The inclusion of 'Her Majesty's' in the title recognises that passports are the property of the Crown, bear the royal coat of arms and are issued under the royal prerogative.
HMPO's executive agency status was removed on 1 October 2014 and it became a division within the Home Office. Its board reports directly to the Home Office's executive management board

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGY - Two tribes editorial photograph shows two rival political signs in a front garden setting in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign.

The sign promotes the scheme's core message of independence and mobility, highlighting access to a new car through the use of a qualifying mobility allowance, alongside services such as insurance, servicing and breakdown cover.
The Motability Scheme is a long-established UK programme that enables disabled people to lease a car, wheelchair accessible vehicle or powered wheelchair using their government mobility allowance. It is widely used and has played a significant role in improving independence, access to employment and participation in everyday life for hundreds of thousands of people across the UK.
At the same time, the scheme has periodically attracted public and political scrutiny, with critics arguing that elements of the programme may be overly generous, particularly in relation to vehicle choice, cost to the public purse and the level of subsidy involved. Media and policy debates have questioned whether tighter controls, clearer eligibility thresholds or greater transparency are needed to ensure value for money while still protecting disabled people's independence.
Supporters of the scheme counter that access to reliable transport is essential rather than optional for many disabled people, and that the scheme's scale allows for efficiencies that would not otherwise be available through individual vehicle ownership. The Motability programme therefore sits at the centre of wider discussions about welfare provision, disability rights, public spending and social inclusion in the UK.
Photographed in daylight with dealership stock visible in the background, the image offers strong editorial value for coverage of disability policy, welfare debates, transport accessibility, public subsidy and the intersection of social support and private industry.

Plainly, the image is useful because it shows Ireland, Irish, Catholics, rightwing, wing, right, fascists, rise of the far-right, with search-relevant terms including Ireland, Irish, Catholics, rightwing, wing, right, fascists, rise of the far-right, rise, far, Southern, Republic, unrest, religion. The value lies in the combination of place, object, wording and context, giving editors something specific and grounded rather than generic filler imagery. Dublin is both a historic capital and a modern European city, where tourism, housing pressure, transport, politics, culture and the River Liffey all shape how the city is understood in contemporary reporting. The image can support political and civic reporting where the point is not just party branding or protest imagery, but the way public debate appears in streets, media, posters, campaign signs and everyday visual culture. The image can work as a lead picture, a supporting cutaway, a contextual inset or a visual metaphor for wider stories about place, services, consumer behaviour, heritage, transport, culture and public life. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change. For SEO and stock-photo discovery, the description deliberately supports searches around the named location, documentary photography.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9GF - The Daily Sketch was a British national tabloid newspaper, founded in Manchester in 1909 by Sir Edward Hulton, 1st Baronet.
In 1920, Lord Rothermere's Daily Mirror Newspapers bought the Daily Sketch. In 1925 Rothermere, sold it to William and Gomer Berry (later Viscount Camrose and Viscount Kemsley).
It was owned by a subsidiary of the Berrys' Allied Newspapers from 1928 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1937 when Camrose withdrew to concentrate his efforts on The Daily Telegraph). In 1946, it was merged with the Daily Graphic. In 1952, Kemsley decided to sell the paper to Associated Newspapers, the owner of the Daily Mail, who promptly revived the Daily Sketch name in 1953. The paper struggled through the 1950s and 1960s, never managing to compete successfully with the Daily Mirror, and in 1971 it was closed and merged with the Daily Mail.
In 1954, an infamous cartoon titled Family Portrait? was published in the paper which mocked Billy Strachan, a black British civil rights leader, for his anti-colonial and anti-imperialist beliefs. The cartoon depicted him with devil horns representing the Caribbean Labour Congress. He also posed with Hewlett Johnson and Paul Robeson, all of whom stood underneath a portrait of the then recently deceased Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
The Sketch was Conservative in its politics and populist in its tone during its existence through all its changes of ownership. In some ways, much of the more populist element of today's Daily Mail was inherited from the Sketch: before the merger, the more serious Mail, previously a broadsheet, also espoused right-wing politics. The Sketch notably launched a moral panic over Daniel Farson's 1960 television documentary Living for Kicks, a portrait of British teenage life at the time, which led to a war of words between the Sketch and the Daily Mirror. It also participated in the press campaign against the screening of the BBC film The War Game
