In the 1990s, the Revuebar struggled, with its dated image and competition from newer venues such as Spearmint Rhino and Stringfellow's. The name and leasehold was bought by Gérard Simi in 1997. The Revuebar closed on 10 June 2004

31 Toad Lane was originally an 18th-century warehouse, on a busy road which then extended to the centre of the town. In 1844 the Co-operative Society rented the ground floor, the upper floors being used by the Methodist society. A counter was made with a plank on barrels, and the shop began. From 1849 the Co-op rented the whole building and developed a library, meeting room, and boot and shoe department. In the 1860s other buildings were rented and in 1867 the society moved out to new purpose-built premises. The building became a pet shop
The Rochdale Pioneers quickly became an inspiration for a wide part of the society, and the co-operative movement started to be known nationally and internationally. As a result, the Co-operative Union purchased the building at 31 Toad Lane in 1925, expressly to create a museum that enhanced the birthplace of co-operation. The museum opened for the first time in 1931.
In the 1970s, the museum was closed for some years because structural problems were found in the building
but it was successfully restored. Rochdale Council redeveloped the remaining section of Toad Lane outside of the building, which had been a cul-de-sac since the 1960s. The new characteristics of the area were cobbled streets, flanked by 19th-century gas lamps and a unique Victorian post-box.

The second attack happened on 20 March, when two small bombs exploded in litter bins outside shops and businesses on Bridge Street. Two children were killed and dozens of people were injured. Shortly before midday on 20 March 1993, The Samaritans in Liverpool received a bomb warning by telephone. According to police, the caller said only that a bomb had been planted outside a Boots shop. Merseyside Police sent officers to branches of Boots in Liverpool and warned the Cheshire Constabulary, who patrolled nearby Warrington. About 30 minutes later, at about 12:25, two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington, about 100 yards (91 m) apart. The blasts happened within a minute of each other. One exploded outside Boots and McDonald's, and one outside the Argos catalogue store. The area was crowded with shoppers. Witnesses said that the first explosion drove panicking shoppers into the path of the next blast just seconds later. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast-iron litter bins, causing large amounts of shrapnel. Buses were organized to ferry people away from the scene and 20 paramedics and crews from 17 ambulances were sent to deal with the aftermath

Architecture

The stained glass in the east window is by Harcourt M. Doyle, dated 1970, and that in the rose window is by Celtic Studios of Swansea, dated 1986. The organ was built in 1906 at a cost of £220 (equivalent to £30,000 in 2021), by E. Wadsworth.

Warrington Borough Council's move into its offices in Time Square is bringing significant savings for the local authority, new figures show.
The council relocated from the New Town House site, and other administrative buildings, in late 2020/early 2021, to reduce the excessive running costs of the outdated office accommodation, and provide a better, modern environment for staff and customers.
With council staff now having been at the £23m 1 Time Square' building for the past 18 months which is a much more efficient building than the previous New Town House site - financial analysis shows that the move to the building is saving the council almost three quarters of a million pounds each year.
Previously, the council paid an annual rent and service charge for the New Town House and Quattro buildings, on top of costs such as business rates and maintenance. In addition, the council paid the running costs of its Rylands Street offices and the Customer Contact Centre on Horsemarket Street. The total equivalent cost for this was £3.1m per year.
As part of the move to Time Square, the council purchased New Town House and Quattro, to fix repayment costs and avoid the uncontrollable escalation associated with leasing the buildings, including being exposed to increasing energy costs in an inefficient building.
Under this new operation, the equivalent costs to the council covering the borrowing costs for the building of 1 Time Square and its running costs, along with the continuing annual borrowing costs for purchasing the New Town House and Quattro buildings - are £2.3m. This represents an annual saving for the council of £741,000 a year.

The UK will scrap the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's data privacy regime, and replace it with an alternative system in the UK, the digital and culture secretary Michelle Donelan has told the Conservative Party conference.
Donelan said the proposed new system, details of which have not yet been revealed, will be simpler and clearer for businesses to navigate.
No longer will our businesses be shackled by lots of unnecessary red tape, said Donelan. We will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly British data protection system.
Our plan will protect consumer privacy and keep their data safe, whilst retaining our data adequacy so businesses can trade freely.
The GDPR, which aims to enhance individuals' rights to their own personal data, took effect across the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in May 2018. It applies to all businesses that process data held by anyone in these regions, regardless of where the business is based.
The Data Reform Bill introduced in the summer is on hold while ministers review their approach. Nadine Norris, the former digital and culture secretary, said in June that measures in the bill would increase financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and minimise the number of cookie pop-ups people see on the internet.
Donelan's speech in Birmingham came after the prime minister announced the exemption of tens of thousands of employers from reporting obligations such as gender pay gap reporting as part of a sweeping package of reforms to cut red tape.
Small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees are currently exempt from regulatory requirements such as gender pay gap and executive pay ratio reporting.
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its façade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the façade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the café with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.

Take a look at that façade. It is pure powerhouse Edwardian, an almost bombastic expression of commercial and national confidence. This was a time when, like it or not, the British Empire was at its peak and the nation felt big.
Hanover is Baroque, a Classical-style formed of big bold elements, nothing is reticent, subtlety is shunned. The base of the exterior walls are of Aberdeen granite, elsewhere there's red brick with Derbyshire sandstone dressings. The most immediately eye-catching elements are the giant order columns at second floor level, then a fiercely heavy cornice, followed by a sweet but strong arcade high in the sky.

The founder, Thomas Milner, originally a tinsmith and metal box-maker from Sheffield, set up a safe manufactory in Liverpool in 1830 where he set about producing tin-plate and sheet iron boxes with his newly patented fire-resisting composition and was employing 35 men. From 1846, he moved on to strong plate iron safes and chests. Thomas died in 1849 leaving his son William as a partner in the newly named Milner & Son and so rapidly was the company growing that by 1851 they were employing 110 men.
By this time they had developed and patented a gunpowder-proof and unpickable key lock in conjunction with Hobbs & Co..
His son-in-law Daniel Rowlinson Ratcliff had by this time joined the company as a partner. Considerable animosity had developed between Milners and George Price, a rival safe-maker from Wolverhampton with each indulging in very unprofessional practices. This was to lead to an incident when each party was publicly testing the others safes with gunpowder when Milner's representative was over zealous in the charge he placed in one of Price's safes resulting in a fatality. Shortly after this incident William Milner retired.
In 1874, now called the Milner Safe Company, the factory was employing 480 men. By this time they were the largest manufacturer of safes and other security work in the world, a fact which they claimed in the London Trades Directory of 1900.
Most familiar among the company's products must be what is usually referred to as the square church door Milner- which is correctly known as the List 2 and which in the earliest models carried a cast iron moulding on the face of the door shaped like a Gothic arch. The heavier range of cash safes such as the List 3, 4 and 5 were still being made in the 4-corner bent banded body right into the 1900's by which time every other maker had changed to the fully 12-corner bent body. It's one of the most intricate canal networks in the world. The hub of the BCN is the bustling city centre junction at Gas Street Basin. Here, colourful boats and historic canal architecture sit side-by-side with vibrant modern restaurants, cafes and bars. The basin is in the heart of Birmingham's cosmopolitan nightlife and shopping districts. The mainlines and city centre canals are busy with boaters, walkers and cyclists.
However, elsewhere on the BCN, you can really get away from it all on winding suburban canals and some surprisingly rural branches. In the northern waters of the BCN, there are some rarely-explored waterways that are truly off the beaten track.
The canals were the life-blood of Victorian Birmingham and the Black Country. At their height, they were so busy that gas lighting was installed beside the locks to permit round-the-clock operation. At street level is another set of shops and other premises, many of which are entered by going down a few steps.
Dating from the medieval era, the Rows may have been built on top of rubble remaining from the ruins of Roman buildings, but their origin is still subject to speculation. In some places the continuity of the Rows has been blocked by enclosure or by new buildings, but in others modern buildings have retained the Rows in their designs. Undercrofts or crypts were constructed beneath the buildings in the Rows. The undercrofts are made from stone while most of the buildings in the Rows are timber.
Today about 20 of the stone undercrofts still exist, but at the level of the Rows very little medieval fabric remains. Many of the buildings containing portions of the Rows are listed and some are recorded in the English Heritage Archive. The premises on the street and Row levels are used for a variety of purposes

In some places the continuity of the Rows has been blocked by enclosure or by new buildings, but in others modern buildings have retained the Rows in their designs. Undercrofts or crypts were constructed beneath the buildings in the Rows. The undercrofts are made from stone while most of the buildings in the Rows are timber.
Today about 20 of the stone undercrofts still exist, but at the level of the Rows very little medieval fabric remains. Many of the buildings containing portions of the Rows are listed and some are recorded in the English Heritage Archive. The premises on the street and Row levels are used for a variety of purposes

Life
Edward Stone was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1702. His parents were Edward Stone, a gentleman farmer, and his first wife Elizabeth Reynolds. His mother having died, his father took a second wife, Elizabeth Grubb, in 1707
the Grubb family was to play a major role in Stone's life.
Stone went to Wadham College, Oxford, in 1720, where in 1730 he became a Fellow. In 1728 or 1729 he was ordained deacon and priest, and served as curate at Charlton-on-Otmoor.
Stone at one time lived on the site of the Hitchman Brewery in West Street, Chipping Norton, where a blue plaque has now been erected. He was buried in Horsenden in 1768
He experimented by drying a pound of willow bark and creating a powder which he gave to about fifty persons: it was consistently found to be a powerful astringent and very efficacious in curing agues and intermitting disorders.' He had discovered salicylic acid, the principal metabolite of aspirin. On 25 April 1763, he sent a letter announcing his discovery to George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society.
A less corrosive compound of salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, produced by reacting sodium salicylate with acetyl chloride, was developed from 1897 by Felix Hoffmann and Arthur Eichengrün. It was marketed by Bayer under the name Aspirin which was registered as a trade name on 23 January 1899. There is little evidence that Stone's idea was taken up by the medical profession. Jeffreys could only find one doctor in Hertfordshire and one pharmacist in Bath who tried using willow bark as a cure for the ague. The latter described it as cheaper than quinine, but never published any findings about its efficacy

Gibbeting was a common law punishment, which a judge could impose in addition to execution. It is a grandiose stone building on Southport's main shopping boulevard, with an imposing clock tower. Entrance is through the ornamented porte-cochère. Inside the foyer has a large stone fireplace inscribed with the date of the hall. A majestic staircase leads up to the old Cambridge Hall. A public hall created at first floor level, the Cambridge Hall was originally flat-floored with a platform stage, with a raised gallery on three sides and large French windows leading onto the balcony.
In 1875, William Atkinson offered Southport Corporation £6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town.
William Atkinson was a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport with his sick wife looking for the refreshing sea air. He eventually moved to Southport and generously donated approximately £40,000 to the town during his lifetime and played an active part in its development. The architects Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, which opened in 1878.

In 1974, when the entire building was converted to Southport Arts Centre, the hall was transformed into the main auditorium. The gallery was removed, and stadium style seating provided in a single rake, facing the improved stage facilities. The smaller Victoria Hall was converted to a rehearsal room and then, in 1990, to a 300-seat studio theatre.
It had been suggested that retail development permitted in the 1980s to the side and rear of the building would limit the opportunity to improve facilities in the arts centre any further. However funding from Sefton Council, the North West Development Agency and the Government's Sea Change initiative from 2008 onwards led to a major redevelopment programme for the building.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 184749 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 193132 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of £463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of £232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEH - On his removal to Grappenhall in 1855, Thomas Leah an Independent Methodist Lay Preacher and a few fellow believers felt led to begin a new Church. Leah who had been converted to the Christian faith at a Camp Meeting at Cherry Lane, Lymm, in 1828, started the Church in a room above a bake house on Knutsford Road. The bake house stood behind what is today a modern detached house which is the third property from the junction of Knutsford and Chester Roads.
For 26 years the small fellowship went from strength to strength. By 1880 it became clear that the room above the bake house was no longer large enough. The Church Leaders decided to buy a plot of land on Chester Road and to erect a new Church for the expanding congregation. After some local opposition the Church was opened in 1881. The building today is part of a private residence between Euclid Avenue and Clarence Road.
Despite the Independent Methodists in Grappenhall having a new church building the congregation began a period of decline. The situation was reported to the Warrington Circuit of Independent Methodist Churches who appointed Robert Henshall and Arthur Jolley to endeavour to revive and resuscitate the Christian Cause at Grappenhall
Church Leaders decided to look for a new plot of land on which to build a larger building. Land in the Cross Lane area of Grappenhall was sought. After much negotiation land was bought on the corner of Knutsford Road and Knutsford Old Road. The new Church building opened in 1913 was located just outside the Parish of Grappenhall in what was then known as 'Latchford Without' and today is part of Stockton Heath Parish.

The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan.
Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough

Opened in 1971, the station had a generating capacity of 1,989 megawatts and took water from the River Mersey. After privatisation in 1990 the station was operated by various companies, and from 2004 by SSE Thermal. The power station closed on 31 March 2020.

An application to build Fiddler's Ferry Power Station was proposed in 1962.It was built by the Cleveland Bridge Company between 1964 and 1971, and came into full operation in 1973.There are eight cooling towers arranged in two groups of four located to the north and south of the main building. There is a single chimney located to the east of the main building. One of the station's cooling towers collapsed in high winds on 13 January 1984 and was rebuilt. When it was built, the station mainly burned coal mined in the South Yorkshire Coalfield and transported across the Pennines on the Manchester-Sheffield-Wath electric railway. Later the coal was imported.
Between 2006 and 2008 Fiddlers Ferry was fitted with Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant to reduce the emissions of sulphur by 94%, meeting the European Large Combustion Plant Directive. In 2010, the station was being considered for the installation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment. This would reduce the station's emissions of nitrogen oxides, to meet the requirements of the Industrial Emissions (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) Directive. The SCR technology would replace the Separated Over Fire Air (SOFA) technology which was used in the station. The SCR equipment was not fitted due to uncertainty over the future of the plant.

History
Hugh Corbett, an entrepreneur with a background in the hotel industry, opened The Slug and Lettuce pub on Islington Green, North London in 1985. At the time, Islington was becoming increasingly gentrified due to its proximity to the City of London financial district. Corbett owned a small number of pubs, which he rechristened with humorous or nonsensical names, with the effect of differentiating them from competitors. His pubs had the then notable differential of stripped out carpets and enlarged windows so that people could see inside from the street.[12] Corbett listed his business in 1989 as Fast Forward, by which time it was a nine-strong chain. The Highland is a traditional breed of western Scotland. There were two distinct types. The Kyloe, reared mainly in the Hebrides or Western Islands, was small and was frequently black.:243 The cattle were so called because of the practice of swimming them across the narrow straits or kyles separating the islands from the mainland. The cattle of the mainland were somewhat larger, and very variable in colour
they were often brown or red.
These cattle were important to the Scottish economy of the eighteenth century. At markets such as those of Falkirk or Crieff, many were bought by drovers from England, who moved them south over the Pennines to be fattened for slaughter. In 1723 over 30000 Scottish cattle were sold into England.
A breed society was established in 1884, and in 1885 published the first volume of the herd-book. In this the two types were recorded without distinction as 'Highland'.
In 2002 the number of registered breeding cows in the United Kingdom was about 2500
by 2012 this had risen to some 6000. In 2021 it was 3161
the conservation status of the breed in the United Kingdom is listed in DAD-IS as endangered/at risk
Although a group of cattle is generally called a herd, a group of Highland cattle is known as a fold. They have long, wide horns and long, wavy, woolly coats. The usual coat colour is reddish brown, seen in approximately 60% of the population

The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning manure or crap in German. Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models.
The standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 203.5 inches (5,170 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Left-hand-drive models were coupled to the recently introduced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors (GM). Pre-1970, right-hand-drive (RHD) models used a highly modified, aluminum-cased version of the original cast-iron 4-speed Hydra-Matic gearbox that had been built in Crewe under license from GM since 1953. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
He moved in 1630 to London, where he became an apprentice and ultimately, in 1638, a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company or guild. He married Susan King, the daughter of London surgeon William King, in 1639. The English Civil War, however, disrupted his business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. His father-in-law helped Winstanley move to Cobham, Surrey, where he initially worked as a cowherd

The project has been punctuated by the exploration of individual and collective relationships with Real Life particularly viewed through contemporary paradigms constructing society such as: Democracy, Utopia, Justice, Capitalism, Geography and History, the Church, the Bank, the State, while in parallel addressing the role of the tattooed artist himself.

Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poitín would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM626A - St George's Market is the last surviving Victorian covered market in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is located on May Street, close to the River Lagan and the Waterfront Hall. Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) commissioned the building of St George's Market, which was built in three phases between 1890 and 1896. Before 1890 St George's Market was an open market and most likely contained a slaughterhouse and a meat market. Today it is a thriving market with 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.
By the 1980s, St George's Market had developed into a general market and it became the last of Belfast's thriving Victorian markets. The market was pressured with increased maintenance costs and changes to hygiene regulations, among other issues, and Belfast City Council decided to source other uses for the listed building. A campaign backed by the city council, traders and the general public resulted in a Heritage Lottery Fund-backed £3.5 million refurbishment programme assisted by the Environment and Heritage Agency. Brick and stonework that had badly deteriorated was returned to good condition, and special bricks were produced in England to match the original unusually sized bricks. The fully renovated St George's Market reopened its doors on 14 May 1999.
St George's Market is primarily used as a market, however a number of other events are held at the site. These range from food festivals, art initiatives, exhibitions, charity launches, fashion shoots and live music events. Local software company Northbrook Technology hold their annual Staff Christmas Party at the venue.
The market has won a number of recent awards, including being voted Best Large Indoor Market 2014 and as one of the UK's top five markets by the National Association of British Market Authorities in 2006, and winning third place in the best markets category of the Observer Food Monthly/Waitrose Awards in 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF054 - A sculptural metal wall panel designed by young people from the Greater Shankill was installed on one of Northern Ireland's most famous peace walls today. Funded by the Arts Council led Re-imaging Communities programme, the large scale artwork was officially unveiled by Arts Minister Nelson McCausland.
The artwork, inspired by ideas presented by the local community, depicts a face, made up of dozens of smaller images themed around Belfast's industrial heritage. Created by artist Kevin Killen, The Face' has been installed on one of Belfast's most recognisable landmarks, the peace wall which divides the Shankill Road from the Falls Road at Cupar Way.
Arts Minister, Nelson McCausland said: This sculpture is a good example of how the arts have the power to transform a local area. Projects such as 'The Face' create a more welcoming atmosphere and help develop a community where people are proud to live. 'The Face' is part of the If Walls Could Talk programme which aims to create an outdoor art gallery of world-class art pieces and provide a canvas on which to express the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. Re-imaging art projects have been a key element in facilitating positive social change and I congratulate artist Kevin Killen and the participants from Impact Training and the Greater Shankill Alternatives for what they have achieved.
Artist Kevin Killen explained how the artwork was created: The Face relates to the themes of Belfast industries, working with the young adults in Impact Training, we designed and fabricated the artwork. Being a part of the project was rewarding and insightful to everyone involved. As the group was a part of the process from start to finish they have developed ownership of the artwork, which is an important benefit. I hope that the artwork gives pride to all the participants involved in the project.

The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse.[3] The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.[4]
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel.
The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T10 - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T16 - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG395F - The St. Enoch Centre is a shopping mall located in the central area of Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. The Architects were the GMW Architects. The construction, undertaken by Sir Robert McAlpine, began in 1986, and the building was opened to the public in May 1989. It was officially opened by the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in February of the following year.
Located on the site of the former St Enoch Station, the building is just off Glasgow's famous shopping thoroughfare, Argyle Street and overlooks the historic St. Enoch Square and the original Subway station building (on the right of the photograph). The present St Enoch subway station is now accessible by escalators.
Whilst the target of many architectural critics, the building is notable for its massive glass roof, which makes it the largest glass-covered enclosed area in Europe. Not only does this substantially reduce heating and lighting loads - the mall area is lit entirely by natural daylight in summer, whilst the solar heat generated by the roof means that mechanical heating is only required for a week on average per year - it also earned the building its affectionate nickname The Glasgow Greenhouse. The roof's steel framework was fabricated by the shipbuilders Scott Lithgow.
The glass roofed element surrounds a seven storey car park, and when originally opened, an ice rink. This was closed in 1999 when a refurbishment programme (initiated to compete with the newer Buchanan Galleries), saw it being replaced by more shops and an enlarged restaurant area.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJPK3 - The Picton Reading Room and Hornby Library are two grade II* listed buildings on William Brown Street, Liverpool, England which now form part of the Liverpool Central Library.
Chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum Sir James Picton laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK.
It was completed in 1879. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

Water flows from a large pool at one end, down a winding holder and is poured over a formation at the end. The structure is concrete, headed by a bronze moulding which includes marine life. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

The red dress effect is the phenomena at which females wearing red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than when wearing other colours.
Naturally, when many non-human primate females become fertile, their estrogen level rises, which causes their blood vessels to open up, leading to redness on the skin, especially near the face, chest and genitalia regions. This increased in redness has been shown to attract male counterparts, shown by their increased activity in sex, self-stimulation and attention towards the females. Therefore, there are reasons to believe of the existence of evolutionary instincts that associates red with fertility.
Many folklores, mythology and literature symbols associate red with fertility, and woman are thought to have worn the equivalent of a red lipstick as early as 10,000 B.C. and so sexual receptiveness and red may be a result of social conditioning. However, this social conditioning may have originated from biology and evolution, and is simply an extension of our primal instincts.

baptised 7 March 1671 died 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero. The name Roy comes from Gaelic Ruadh meaning Red, and referred to his red hair.
Rob Roy was born at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were Donald Glas MacGregor and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Macdonalds of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.

baptised 7 March 1671 died 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero. The name Roy comes from Gaelic Ruadh meaning Red, and referred to his red hair.
Rob Roy was born at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were Donald Glas MacGregor and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Macdonalds of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.

It is the seventh highest in the country, the fifth highest parish church in the UK, after the St. Walburge's Church, Preston, St. James Church, Louth, St Mary Redcliffe, and St. Wulfram's Church, Grantham.
Within the church, St Ann's Chapel was founded by Thomas Massey, rector of Warrington from 1448 to 1464. It continued to belong to the Massey family until they died out in 1748. The chapel was then acquired by the Patten family who built a vault to bury members of the family, the last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892. The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel. In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.
The gateway to the church dates from the 18th century. It consists of two stone rusticated gate piers surmounted by a cornice and urns. Between these are two iron gates over which is a curved iron arch. To the sides are low stone side walls and small iron side gates for pedestrians. The gateway is listed Grade II. Also listed Grade II are the cobbles and the pavement leading to the gateway.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom
