Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FJ - Clampdown Records is an independent record shop located at 911 Paton Street, Manchester M1 2BA, in Manchester city centre. The venue is part of the city's long-standing tradition of independent music retail, occupying a niche space away from mainstream high-street chains and reflecting Manchester's deep-rooted alternative music culture.
The shop's signage, prominently displaying the name Clampdown Records, references a confrontational, anti-establishment aesthetic closely associated with punk, post-punk and politically engaged music cultures. Such naming conventions have historically signalled alignment with underground scenes rather than commercial chart music, positioning shops like Clampdown as cultural hubs rather than purely retail outlets.
Independent record shops have played a crucial role in Manchester's music history, acting as meeting points for musicians, fans, collectors and promoters, and serving as informal distribution centres for local and international underground releases. In an era of digital streaming and declining physical retail, stores such as Clampdown Records are often cited as symbols of the vinyl revival and the persistence of analogue music formats valued for their tactile, collectible and cultural qualities.
Paton Street sits close to areas historically associated with Manchester's music and nightlife economy, and the presence of an independent record shop here contributes to wider discussions about urban regeneration, cultural survival and the future of independent high streets in UK cities. The image captures not only the physical storefront but also the broader cultural significance of independent music retail within Manchester's identity as a city shaped by sound, subculture and creative resistance.
Photographed in close-up with architectural details and signage clearly visible, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including music heritage, independent business, cultural economics and the continuing relevance

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E6T4DM - Vintage Frank Sidebottom programme pages featuring Timperley Bigshorts FC branding, Umbro sponsorship styling and a signed dedication associated with cult comic character Frank Sidebottom, created by Chris Sievey. The image shows two printed pages with bold red and black vertical stripes, a Timperley Bigshorts FC badge and character illustration on one side, and a cut-out official match token number panel and voucher sheet instruction on the other. A handwritten message reading best regards Frank Sidebottom adds extra collectible and documentary interest, making the photograph useful for editorial stories about British alternative comedy, cult memorabilia, Chris Sievey, Manchester cultural history, novelty football culture and the crossover between music, comedy and graphic design. Frank Sidebottom became one of the most distinctive figures in late twentieth century British pop culture, closely associated with Greater Manchester, eccentric live performance, comic invention and DIY creativity. Timperley Bigshorts FC formed part of that extended humorous universe, blending spoof football imagery with fan culture, merchandise and printed ephemera in a way that now appeals strongly to collectors and cultural historians. The visible Umbro reference also places the design within the look and branding language of football kit culture and sponsorship aesthetics familiar from the late 1980s and 1990s. This image is commercially useful for picture buyers needing material on Frank Sidebottom collectibles, Chris Sievey archives, vintage printed memorabilia, signed entertainment ephemera, cult British humour, independent publishing and Manchester creative history. It also suits magazine features, newspaper retrospectives, books, documentaries, museum interpretation, fan archive projects and pieces exploring the afterlife of unusual pop culture objects. The graphic layout, readable text and autograph detail make it a strong stock image for themes of nostalgia & fandom

The station has 27 escalators, the most of any station on the Underground. The stations are in fare zone 1
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light metro system primarily serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London and providing a direct connection between London's two major financial districts, Canary Wharf and the City of London. First opened on 31 August 1987, the DLR has been extended multiple times, giving a total route length of 38 km (24 miles). Lines now reach north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. An extension to Thamesmead is currently being proposed.

The Harrogate Bus Company operates both local and regional bus services in North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, England. It is a subsidiary of Transdev Blazefield
In July 2016, the company was again rebranded, now operating as The Harrogate Bus Company. To coincide with this, a huge fleet upgrade was undertaken, which included the introduction of the current two-tone red livery, as well as a refurbishment of the company's route 1 branded single-deck Wright Eclipse Urban bodied Volvo B7RLE vehicles to set the new standard specification of free WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. Other Wright Eclipse Urban vehicles were transferred from some of Transdev's other subsidiaries to replace the older Wright Renown bodied Volvo B10BLE single-decker vehicles which were branded for the route. 2016 also saw the launch of 14 new high-specification Wright Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL double-deck vehicles on the route 36, replacing the older Wright Eclipse Gemini vehicles. The 36 also received its own new brand Riding Redefined as well as a new two-tone red and black livery. In July 2017, a new brand was introduced for the route 770/771, which saw the services become renumbered alongside the new brand name known as Superior 70/71. A fleet of Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE single-deck vehicles were transferred from Transdev's operations in Burnley and refurbished to equip them with WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. The new fleet entered service on the route on 23 July, eventually replacing the entire fleet of Volvo B10BLE Wright Renown vehicles, which then left the fleet in 2018. In April 2018, due to the loss of council funding for the 70 to Connexionsbuses, the 71 was again renumbered and rebranded, now known as Simple 7.
In partnership with DalesBus, the service between Harrogate and Skipton was reintroduced in May 2021

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YF2 - Detail of the former Fire Brigade Headquarters building on London Road in Manchester city centre, postcode M1 2AE. The image focuses on the ornate stone cartouche bearing the carved inscription Fire Brigade Head Quarters, framed by decorative terracotta and red brickwork typical of late Victorian and Edwardian civic architecture.
London Road, now part of the A6 corridor, has long been associated with municipal infrastructure and public services, including transport, utilities, and emergency response. Purpose-built fire stations and headquarters such as this reflected the growing professionalisation of fire services in major industrial cities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, responding to the risks posed by dense urban development and manufacturing.
The craftsmanship visible in the stone carving and façade detailing illustrates the civic pride invested in public service buildings of the period, which were designed not only for operational use but also to project authority, permanence, and public confidence. The survival of the original inscription provides a direct physical link to Manchester's historic fire brigade and the city's wider industrial and social history.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents an important example of Manchester's architectural heritage and the historic role of emergency services within the evolving city centre landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCA2EG - The Rochdale Pioneers Museum is housed in the building where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society started trading on 21 December 1844. The museum is regarded as the birthplace of the modern co-operative movement. It is located in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England.
The museum includes a recreation of the original shop, containing its rudimentary furniture, scales, items that were sold at the store, etc. Moreover, the museum transmits the influence of the co-operative movement on issues such as women's rights, poverty, education, fair trade and social reform. The museum is owned by the Co-operative Heritage Trust and managed by the Co-operative College
31 Toad Lane was originally an 18th-century warehouse, on a busy road which then extended to the centre of the town. In 1844 the Co-operative Society rented the ground floor, the upper floors being used by the Methodist society. A counter was made with a plank on barrels, and the shop began. From 1849 the Co-op rented the whole building and developed a library, meeting room, and boot and shoe department. In the 1860s other buildings were rented and in 1867 the society moved out to new purpose-built premises. The building became a pet shop
The Rochdale Pioneers quickly became an inspiration for a wide part of the society, and the co-operative movement started to be known nationally and internationally. As a result, the Co-operative Union purchased the building at 31 Toad Lane in 1925, expressly to create a museum that enhanced the birthplace of co-operation. The museum opened for the first time in 1931.
In the 1970s, the museum was closed for some years because structural problems were found in the building
but it was successfully restored. Rochdale Council redeveloped the remaining section of Toad Lane outside of the building, which had been a cul-de-sac since the 1960s. The new characteristics of the area were cobbled streets, flanked by 19th-century gas lamps and a unique Victorian post-box.

History
A product of the last generation of cotton mill building, Leigh Spinners was designed by Bolton architects Bradshaw, Gass & Hope for the Horrocks Company, and built in two phases. The east section comprising the six-storey mill, boiler house and chimney stack was built in 1913 and the matching west section was completed ten years later. One of the few double mills to be completed, it is one of the most complete still standing in Greater Manchester. Part of the factory is occupied by Leigh Spinners Ltd who have manufactured carpets since 1969 and since 2012, synthetic turf products for landscaping and sport.
The building is in poor condition and considered to be at risk by Historic England. A charity, the Leigh Building Preservation Trust was formed to restore the steam engine and engine house. In September 2013 the charity was awarded a £75,000 grant to restore the steam engine and repair the engine house by Waste Recycling Environmental Limited, a heritage fund that protects buildings of historical importance. The charity was able to turn the engine in 2018 for the first time in many years.
As at January 2019, the younger of the two mill buildings has had extensive roof repairs, allowing the Charity to advance the restoration of several floors. Sport England funding enabled the conversion of one floor to accommodate a Table Tennis Club,

Our purpose was, and remains today, to provide a musical haven for every listener, across all musical genres. We continue to pride ourselves on our ability to offer knowledge and expertise alongside a personal service to every customer - whether they be a classical buff, indie kid or head! We revel in sourcing the obscure, rare, old, as well as new, and as times change and new technologies emerge, so too has Record Corner adapted it's offering to remain at the forefront of music retail.
Over the course of the last year's national lock-downs, we devoted our time to giving the shop the refresh it deserved. With a new coat of paint, upgraded displays and tons of second-hand vinyl, we take great pride in what we have achieved during such difficult times. Perhaps the biggest change of all is our state-of-the-art coffee machine. Being located so close to larger coffee chains, we knew we had to stand out if we were to succeed. After spending time sampling local competition and hiring the best barista in town, we truly believe our coffee is the the most delicious you will find.
As restrictions are slowly being lifted and life is getting back to normal, we look forward to seeing more of our incredible customers coming through our door for a coffee and a browse. We couldn't be more excited about the future of Record Corner - we have so many plans and ideas to see us into the next 60 years that we would love you to be part of.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWEXJ - EKCO (from Eric Kirkham Cole Limited) was a British electronics company producing radio and television sets from 1924 until 1960. Expanding into plastic production for its own use, Ekco Plastics produced both radio cases and later domestic plastic products
the plastics company became Lin Pac Mouldings Ltd.
The company's founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924.
William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity
In the late 1930s, Ekco began producing its own radio valves at its Southend-on-Sea works. Following the company's decision to abandon the venture, the plant was converted to a lamp factory. In 1943, Ekco acquired Ensign Lamps based in Preston. In 1950, Ekco sold 51% of its lighting subsidiary, Ekco-Ensign Electric Ltd, to Thorn Electrical Industries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M9F1T7 - Kalles Kaviar (known as Kallen Mätitahna in Finland) is a Swedish brand of smörgåskaviar.
It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is mainly made of salted cod roe (Gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. It is officially credited as having been introduced in 1954, but probably existed even earlier as advertisment for the product appeared in newspapers as early as 1950. The product soon became considered a classic product in the Swedish market, internationally recognised as a Swedish product.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of the then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The name Kalle was used because it was a popular name in the 1950s when it was first created.
The tube had to be made of aluminium rather than plastic because kaviar cannot stay fresh when in contact with air, and plastic tubes become filled with air when the contents have been squeezed out, whereas aluminium remains in the form it was pressed into.
In 2011, IKEA replaced Kalles Kaviar with its own brand of caviar. This led to backlash, leading to IKEA returning the product to its shelves within a few years

In 1996 the company expanded and set up a new division, Windowstyle, which manufactures Safestyle's double glazed PVCu windows and doors in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The company has invested more than £6.5 million in Windowstyle to date, including £2.5 million worth of state-of-the-art glass toughening and processing machinery. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXE8 - Whitby Swing Bridge is a pedestrian and road bridge over the River Esk in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England.
The River Esk has been crossed by bridges at this location for centuries. A grant made by King Edward III in 1351 allowed the collection of tolls for the maintenance of a bridge. By the mid 1550s the tolls averaged around £6 per annum (equivalent to £2,421 as of 2021).
In 1629 an agreement was made by the justices in the North Riding to replace a wooden bridge with one which included moving parts. This was later replaced by a drawbridge, built in 1766 at a cost of £3,000 (equivalent to £444,000 in 2021), and later in 1835, the first swing bridge was opened designed by Francis Pickernell

Bridge during an opening
By the early 20th century the limited 45-foot (14 m) clearance of the 1835 bridge was restricting the size of vessels which could be built up-stream of the bridge. A replacement swing bridge was commissioned by Whitby Urban District Council. It was designed by J. Mitchell Moncrieff, later President of the Institution of Structural Engineers. As work progressed on the west side of the river bank to set a pivot for the bridge to swing, a seam of coal 10 inches (250 mm) thick was struck at 26 feet (7.9 m) below the water level. The foundations had to be sunk to a depth of 32 feet (9.8 m) below the low water mark for a secure foundation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MG94 - Yorkshire Tea is a black tea blend produced by the Bettys & Taylors Group since 1977. It is the most popular traditional black tea brand sold in the UK. In 1886 Charles Edward Taylor Founded CE Taylor & Co., later shortened to Taylors, the company was purchased by 'Betty's Tea Rooms' which today forms Bettys & Taylors Group. Taylors of Harrogate is still based in Harrogate, Yorkshire, in the first 'Betty's' tea room.
The group is still owned by the family of Bettys' founder, Fredrick Belmont and is currently chaired by Lesley Wild. The company is one of the few remaining family tea and coffee merchants in the country, whilst competing with the British-owned PG Tips (Ekaterra) and Tetley (Tata), where Yorkshire Tea is now the most purchased tea brand in the UK, overtaking Twinings (a division of Associated British Foods) and Typhoo
Yorkshire Tea uses varieties of tea grown in India, Sri Lanka, and Kenya, blended to form eight blends: Yorkshire Tea, Yorkshire Decaf, Yorkshire Hardwater (available in the United Kingdom), Yorkshire Gold, Breakfast Brew, Bedtime Brew, Biscuit Brew, and Toast and Jam Brew.
In 2016 the brand launched Breakfast Brew, Breaktime Brew and the decaffeinated Bedtime Brew. Yorkshire Tea introduced Biscuit Brew, a malty flavoured tea, to its range in 2018 and Toast and Jam Brew in 2020.
The Yorkshire Tea brand is being extended to include a range of cakes, biscuits, and fruit loaves, sold as being complementary to drinking tea by its parent company The Bettys & Taylors Group, which owns cookery schools and tea rooms

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3C7 - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is a historic walled garden in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP5T1B - The Milner Safe Company
The founder, Thomas Milner, originally a tinsmith and metal box-maker from Sheffield, set up a safe manufactory in Liverpool in 1830 where he set about producing tin-plate and sheet iron boxes with his newly patented fire-resisting composition and was employing 35 men. From 1846, he moved on to strong plate iron safes and chests. Thomas died in 1849 leaving his son William as a partner in the newly named Milner & Son and so rapidly was the company growing that by 1851 they were employing 110 men.
By this time they had developed and patented a gunpowder-proof and unpickable key lock in conjunction with Hobbs & Co..
His son-in-law Daniel Rowlinson Ratcliff had by this time joined the company as a partner. Considerable animosity had developed between Milners and George Price, a rival safe-maker from Wolverhampton with each indulging in very unprofessional practices. This was to lead to an incident when each party was publicly testing the others safes with gunpowder when Milner's representative was over zealous in the charge he placed in one of Price's safes resulting in a fatality. Shortly after this incident William Milner retired.
In 1874, now called the Milner Safe Company, the factory was employing 480 men. By this time they were the largest manufacturer of safes and other security work in the world, a fact which they claimed in the London Trades Directory of 1900.
Most familiar among the company's products must be what is usually referred to as the square church door Milner- which is correctly known as the List 2 and which in the earliest models carried a cast iron moulding on the face of the door shaped like a Gothic arch. The heavier range of cash safes such as the List 3, 4 and 5 were still being made in the 4-corner bent banded body right into the 1900's by which time every other maker had changed to the fully 12-corner bent body. In 1911, five Milner safes were supplied to Harland & Wolff for installation on the Titani

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TM - Arkell's Brewery was established in Swindon, England by John Arkell in 1843, and has been owned by members of the Arkell family since its establishment. It is Swindon's oldest company, built initially on the massive expansion of Swindon in the Victorian era with the arrival of the railways and the decision by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to site the Great Western Railway Works in Swindon in 1841.
Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJJX - The Three Choirs Festival is a music festival held annually at the end of July, rotating among the cathedrals of the Three Counties (Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester) and originally featuring their three choirs, which remain central to the week-long programme. The large-scale choral repertoire is now performed by the Festival Chorus, but the festival also features other major ensembles and international soloists. The 2011 festival took place in Worcester from 6 to 13 August. The 2012 festival in Hereford took place earlier than usual, from 21 to 28 July, to avoid clashing with the 2012 Summer Olympics. The event is now established in the last week of July. The 300th anniversary of the original Three Choirs Festival was celebrated during the 2015 festival, which took place from 25 July to 1 August in Hereford (the landmark 300th meeting of the Three Choirs does not fall until after 2027 due to there being no Three Choirs Festivals for the duration of both World War I and World War II and COVID-19. The 2023 Festival will take place in Gloucester from 22 to 29 July.
The festival is closely identified with the musical careers of British composers Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The organists of the three cathedrals (who act as artistic director and festival conductor when it is their cathedral's turn to host the festival) are Geraint Bowen (Hereford), Adrian Partington (Gloucester) and Samuel Hudson (Worcester).

The company was founded in 2000, when entrepreneur Daniel Broch bought the original Everyman Cinema in Hampstead, London, which dated to 1933, which before then was a theatre. Broch led the growth of the company with the acquisition in 2008 of Screen Cinemas to add more locations. This coincided with Broch selling a majority stake in the enlarged company, though he remains a shareholder. Following the acquisition, the group has refurbished or plans to refurbish a number of cinemas. Those already refurbished include Walton, Belsize Park, Baker Street, and The Screen On The Green in Islington. Everyman's cinemas have one to five screens, a small number of which offer 3D.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2B1YFW7 - The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is a familiar sight on the streets of the United Kingdom, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar.
Despite a reduction in their numbers in recent years, the traditional British red telephone kiosk can still be seen in many places throughout the UK, and in current or former British colonies around the world. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot.
From 1926 onwards, the fascias of the kiosks were emblazoned with a prominent crown, representing the British government. The red phone box is often seen as a British cultural icon throughout the world. In 2006 the K2 telephone box was voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons, which included the Mini, Supermarine Spitfire, London tube map, World Wide Web, Concorde and the AEC Routemaster bus. Although production of the traditional boxes ended with the advent of the KX series in 1985, many still stand in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02ND - On World Polio Day, 24th October, thousands of Rotary clubs around the world will hold events and fundraisers to recognize the progress in the global fight to end polio.
Warrington Rotary, as part of its Purple for Polio campaign, and with the support of Warrington Borough Council, intend to mark the occasion by lighting the town hall purple
In 1985, Rotary launched the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Since the first project to vaccinate children polio has been eradicated by 99.9%. Although there is no cure for polio it can be prevented with a vaccine.
Rotary has been joining forces with associations such as the World Health Organization in a battle to reach the remaining endemic countries- Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Unless polio is eradicated everywhere, within ten years we could see as many as 200,000 new cases annually.
World Polio Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the devastating effects of polio and why Rotary clubs work together to eradicate it from the world.
The first effective attempt to fight polio was made by Jonas Salk in 1955. He and his team created an inactivate vaccine. To honour his work, Rotary International named October 24th as World Polio Day.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43P0X - The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) was the second largest (after LMS) of the Big Four railway companies created by the Railways Act 1921 in Britain. It operated from 1 January 1923 until nationalisation on 1 January 1948. At that time, it was divided into the new British Railways' Eastern Region, North Eastern Region, and partially the Scottish Region.
It covered the area north and east of London. It included the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh via York and Newcastle upon Tyne and the routes from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and Inverness. Most of the country east of the Pennines was within its purview, including East Anglia. The main workshops were in Doncaster, with others at Darlington, Inverurie and Stratford, London
On the privatisation of British Rail in 1996, the franchise to run long distance express trains on the East Coast Main Line was won by Sea Containers Ltd, who named the new operating company Great North Eastern Railway (GNER), a name and initials deliberately chosen to echo the LNER.
Following the collapse of Virgin Trains East Coast in May 2018, the newly-nationalised operator of the East Coast Main Line was named London North Eastern Railway to evoke the earlier company

In 2010, BrewDog opened their first bar, in nearby Aberdeen. At the end of 2018, the company operates 50 bars in the United Kingdom and 24 international bars.
In 2011, BrewDog was described as one of the prime movers behind the campaign which changed the law in 2011 to allow new beer measures in Britain.
2011 also saw the company offered crowdfunding shares totalling £2 million, the equivalent of 8% of the capital of the company. The shares were sold at £23.75 and accompanied several benefits such as discounts in their bars and online purchase of their beers, and the opportunity to attend their annual shareholders meeting.
The main brewing moved from Fraserburgh to nearby Ellon in 2012.
In February 2016, BrewDog open-sourced its beer recipes to the public, making them a form of Free Beer.
Private equity firm, TSG Consumer Partners acquired a 22% stake in the company for approximately £213 million in April 2017.
In February 2018, BrewDog announced that it plans to build a $30 million production brewery and tap room on an 11,000sqm greenfield site in the Metroplex complex at Murrarie, in Brisbane, Australia.
BrewDog's provocative marketing has been a key aspect of its business, and has gained them substantial international coverage.
In 2008, BrewDog were challenged by UK drinks industry watchdog the Portman Group. Portman had claimed BrewDog to be in breach of their Code of Practice for the labeling of the Dead Pony IPA. BrewDog denied these allegations and countered that Portman was impeding the development of smaller brewing companies. In December 2008, after an 8-month long dispute and a preliminary adjudication which had ruled against the company, BrewDog were cleared of all breaches of the Code of Practice and were permitted to continue marketing their brands without making any changes to the packaging.
In protest to their targeting, BrewDog introduced Speedball

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGP8 - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN95 - Robert Roy MacGregor (Scottish Gaelic: Raibeart Ruadh MacGriogair
7 March 1671 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero.
Rob Roy was born in the Kingdom of Scotland at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were the local Clan MacGregor Tacksman, Donald Glas MacGregor, and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.
In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary MacGregor of Comar (16711745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James Mor MacGregor (16951754), Ranald (17061786), Coll (died 1735) and Robert (17151754)known as Robìn Òig or Young Rob.
Along with many Highland clansmen, at the age of eighteen Rob Roy MacGregor together with his father joined the Jacobite rising of 1689 led by John Graham, 1st Viscount Dundee and Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, to support the Stuart King James VII, whose flight from Britain had been declared by Parliament to be an abdication, following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Although victorious in initial battles, Dundee was killed at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, deflating the rebellion. MacGregor's father was taken to jail, where he was held on high treason charges for two years. MacGregor's mother Margaret's health failed during Donald's time in prison. By the time Donald was finally released, his wife was dead.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF864N - The K4 kiosk was designed by the Engineering Department of the General Post Office. It used the successful design of the K2 kiosk, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, expanded to include a post box and stamp machine
it was an automated mini-Post Office. The K4 kiosk was enormous and was half as big again as the K2 kiosk. The K4 was introduced in limited numbers in Britain and production ceased within five years. Only 5 examples remain and are given Grade II listing status by English Heritage.
Design
The K4 kiosk is constructed of cast-iron sections, standing on a concrete base. The footprint of the K4 is rectangular, with one axis half as large again as the other. In form the K4 is a cuboid with a domed roof. Each side has fluted architrave moldings at the outer edge. At the base is a blank rectangular panel with trim molding-surround. Three sides of the kiosk are glazed with six rows of three rectangular panes of glass, edged with reeded moldings
on the longer sides there is an extra panel with trim molding to break up the mass.
Between 1930 and 1935 only 50 examples of the K4 were installed. They remain a very rare sight. There are only 5 (10% of all K4 kiosks) separate listings for the K4 kiosk with English Heritage, and none elsewhere in Britain. These K4s are all outside London, in Bewdley (Worcestershire), Roos (East Yorkshire), Frodsham (Cheshire) and Warrington (Cheshire). Of the eight kiosk types introduced by the General Post Office, the K4 was the six-most populous type introduced, but the joint fourth-most populous type in terms of surviving kiosks. About Motley creator:
Hailing from and currently residing in Manchester. I'm incredibly passionate about my city. The hope is that I can do my part to make it an interesting place to live.
Besides being best known for my street art, I enjoy working with the best possible medium to execute an idea. In true Motley fashion. Meaning mismatched and irregular. My work is less rooted in a common visual style and more based on the independent reaction to what inspired me in the first place.
I take inspiration from many sources. Elements of public space such as advertisements and signage are of particular interest. Given that street art is technically illegal, I'm fascinated by the visual elements of the street that are permitted.
My dream job would either be mayor of Manchester or Ikea bookshelf instructions designer.

The four postboxes are located in Greenwich, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, and will be in place for the entire festive season.

In 1950, Fender introduced the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the Broadcaster for two-pickup models and Esquire for single-pickup). Following its success, Fender created the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass). In 1954, Fender unveiled the Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. With the Telecaster and Precision Bass having been on the market for some time, Leo Fender was able to incorporate input from working musicians into the Stratocaster's design.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5M5 - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.
There is also a gallery charting the history of sanitary ware, privies, earth closets and water closets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NA - Take a Look Inside Overthrow Boxing, Where Celebs Like Usher and J-Lo Train
There is a crowd gathering outside the door of 9 Bleecker Street, the gritty downtown headquarters of Overthrow Boxing.
Passersby slow their pace and turn their heads towards the pulsating hip-hop that blares out Overthrow's doors and onto the sidewalk. Through its ground floor windows, and past an aggressive neon red sign, a few dozen young women chat excitedly as they wrap their hands before squeezing into boxing gloves.
Further back another class is still in session, with the participants jabbing ferociously at shared punching bags as an instructor screams down from a ring set alongside an exposed brick wall.
On any given night, a peek through these same steamed-up windows could result in a story-worthy sighting of Nina Agdal, Usher, Martha Hunt, Jennifer Lopez, the Fat Jewish or Will Smith.
This is exactly what Overthrow founder Joey Goodwin had in mind when he started the gym two years ago. I wanted to create an atmosphere that drew you in, he says. Everyone on the outside is trying to get a better look, wishing they were a part of the action.
Atisha Paulson
The phenomenon was one that Goodwin observed while on the iconic West 4th basketball courts, where he started balling at the age of 10.
There he was introduced to the sport of boxing through a fellow player.
I think he saw me run my mouth and get beaten up too many times, remembers Goodwin, leaning back in his office on the gym's second floor. He took me to East River Park and taught me a few moves. I was hooked immediately.
Enrolling in a local boxing gym, the street-wise Goodwin immediately spotted an opportunity for growth. The room was filled CEOs, models, editors and entrepreneurs, he says. I began to see the potential that could come with creating a real boxing brand, done in the style of SoulCycle or Barry's Bootcamp.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BT5 - Vivary Park is a public open space in Taunton, Somerset, England.
The Sherford Stream, a tributary of the River Tone, flows through the 7.5 hectares (19 acres) park, which is located near the centre of the town. It contains two main wide open spaces, as well as a war memorial dating from 1922, a miniature golf course, tennis courts, two children's playgrounds, a model railway track which was added in 1979, and an 18-hole, 4,620-yard (4,220 m), par-63 golf course. The park includes trees, rose beds and herbaceous borders, with around 56,000 spring and summer bedding plants being used each year. The rose garden includes the Royal National Rose Society Provincial Trial Ground.
The park is a garden of the European Garden Heritage Network.
The park stands on land that was formerly a medieval fish farm, or vivarium, for Taunton Priory and Taunton Castle. Although nothing remains above ground of these lakes, they are the origin of the name Vivary. Entries in pipe rolls of the 13th and 14th centuries show that bream, pike, and eels were supplied from the vivarium to the Castle and sometimes to the royal household. These sources identify two ponds, the magnum vivarium, or great pond, which probably occupied the low-lying area of the present-day golf-course, and the parvum vivarium or little pond, within what is now the park proper. When a trench for a new sewer was cut through the park and its golf course during the 1970s, archaeologists were able to identify the deposits of silt left behind by the medieval fish ponds.

The red box in Glasgow city centre was once used by officers. But now it is being openly used to sell a smoking product derived from cannabis.
Chris Mackenzie who stood for election last month for the UK's first pro-cannabis party is handing out drug-legalisation propaganda from the former police box in Sauchiehall Street. The self-confessed cannabis user is also selling e-cigarette liquids containing one of the active compounds found in the plant.
The 26-year-old claims his £30 vape oils' which apparently contain cannabidiol (CBD), an extract from the cannabis plant can treat a range of medical conditions, including cancer, epilepsy and diabetes.

----
Cannabis is a class B drug meaning it it is illegal to possess.
Anyone found with the drug could be imprisoned for up to five years while supplying it can be punished with a 14-year jail sentence or an unlimited fine.
The penalty depends on the amount of the drug, the person's criminal history and other aggravating or mitigating factors.
Police can also issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of £90 to someone found with cannabis.
Alternatively, officers could issue a cannabis warning which goes on a person's record but is not revealed by a standard criminal records check.
Of the 16,101 convictions for cannabis possession in the UK in 2016, 292 were jailed.
The legality of recreational use is not up for debate, the government has said.
What is medicinal cannabis?
Cannabis also contains cannabidiol (CBD) which scientists are investigating as a medical treatment.
CBD-based treatments have shown some promising results for reducing seizures in children with severe epilepsies.
Medical trials have largely focused on pharmacological preparations.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has revealed a significant increase in houses planned for the Green Belt, and yet most of these houses will be unaffordable to those who need them.
Based on local and city-regional planning policies and new data from planning consultants Glenigan, CPRE's annual Green Belt Under Siege report shows that more than 70% of houses proposed for development are not expected to be affordable'. It also demonstrates that just 16% of houses built on Green Belt land since 2009 outside local plans were classed as affordable'.
In total, 425,000 houses are now planned for Green Belt land. This is an increase of 54% on March 2016, and the biggest year-on-year increase in building proposed in the Green Belt for two decades. Green Belt in the North West, West Midlands and South East is under particular pressure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMMA6 - Brighton is a seaside resort on the south coast of England that is part of the city of Brighton and Hove, located 47 miles (76 km) south of London.
Brighton's location has made it a popular destination for tourists, renowned for its diverse communities, quirky shopping areas, large cultural, music and arts scene and its large LGBT population, leading to its recognition as the unofficial gay capital of the UK. Brighton attracted 7.5 million day visitors in 2015/16 and 4.9 million overnight visitors, and is the most popular seaside destination in the UK for overseas tourists. Brighton has also been called the UK's hippest city, and the happiest place to live in the UK
In 1985, the Borough Council described three myths about Brighton's economy. Common beliefs were that most of the working population commuted to London every day
that tourism provided most of Brighton's jobs and income
or that the borough's residents were composed entirely of wealthy theatricals and retired businesspeople rather than workers. Brighton has been an important centre for commerce and employment since the 18th century. It is home to several major companies, some of which employ thousands of people locally
as a retail centre it is of regional importance
creative, digital and new media businesses are increasingly significant
and, although Brighton was never a major industrial centre, its railway works contributed to Britain's rail industry in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the manufacture of steam locomotives.
Since the amalgamation of Brighton and Hove, economic and retail data has been produced at a citywide level only. Examples of statistics include: Brighton and Hove's tourism industry contributes £380m to the economy and employs 20,000 people directly or indirectly
the city has 9,600 registered companies
and a 2001 report identified it as one of five supercities for the future. In the past couple of years tourists to Brighton and Hove have fallen.

baptised 7 March 1671 died 28 December 1734) was a Scottish outlaw, who later became a folk hero. The name Roy comes from Gaelic Ruadh meaning Red, and referred to his red hair.
Rob Roy was born at Glengyle, at the head of Loch Katrine, as recorded in the baptismal register of Buchanan, Stirling. His parents were Donald Glas MacGregor and Margaret Campbell. He was also descended from the Macdonalds of Keppoch through his paternal grandmother.
In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary Helen MacGregor of Comar (1671-1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James, Ranald, Coll and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). They also adopted a cousin named Duncan.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EDNT - Emmeline Pankhurst is moored on the non-towing path side of the main line of the Bridgewater Canal just out of Castlefield Basin (the junction of the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals). The wharf can be reached by car by turning off Liverpool Road at Potato Wharf (the narrow slightly inconspicuous street just below and opposite the Museum of Science & Industry, behind the Castlefield Hotel).
Alternatively it is an easy walk from Deansgate train station or Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop which are adjacent to each other (bottom-right of map). You need to walk via Liverpool Street and Potato Wharf (street) because access to the boat directly from Castlefield Basin is not possible.
To reach the boat go on foot to the junction with Potato Wharf (~30yds from the side street above) and walk to the end of the paved pedestrian area which faces the junction, keeping towards the right. Cross the bridge over the canal arm, head diagonally right to go through a gate to the canal and turn left along the bank to find the trip boat.
Emmeline Pankhurst is owned by City Centre Cruises in Manchester who are offering a 10% discount to IWA Members for their Sunday lunch cruise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H04G07 - London Central and London General are relatively new bus companies, being formed in 1989 in preparation for the privatisation of London Buses Limited. However, both companies' origins can be traced back to one of the original pioneers of bus operations in the capital, the London General Omnibus Company Limited (LGOC).
LGOC, or General as it was known, operated services throughout the capital and was absorbed into the new London Transport Executive in 1933. London Transport became synonymous with the red London bus until the bus operation was segregated in 1985, becoming London Buses Ltd and London Underground Ltd.
Upon privatisation in autumn 1994, London Central was purchased by the Go-Ahead Group, who are based in Newcastle, which itself was formed on the privatisation of Northern General Transport Ltd, previously part of the National Bus Company. London General was initially purchased by an employee / management team, being subsequently acquired by the Go-Ahead Group in the summer of 1996. These purchases were part of a policy of expansion by the Go-Ahead Group which continues today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4GA - Billy Whizz is a fictional character featured in the British comic The Beano, first appearing in issue 1139, dated 16 May 1964, when it replaced The Country Cuzzins. Billy, the title character, is a boy who can run extraordinarily fast. His speed often causes chaos yet at the same time his ability can prove useful. He also has a younger brother called Alfie Whizz of similar appearance. Alfie is usually shown as a normal boy but occasionally he is shown to be just as fast as his brother.
In strips up until the 1980s, Billy lives in Whizztown rather than Beanotown like most of the other regular characters, however this later changed and more recent strips place him in Beanotown.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ETJ - A mince pie is a small British fruit-based mincemeat sweet pie traditionally served during the Christmas season. Its ingredients are traceable to the 13th century, when returning European crusaders brought with them Middle Eastern recipes containing meats, fruits and spices.
The early mince pie was known by several names, including mutton pie, shrid pie and Christmas pie. Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Served around Christmas, the savoury Christmas pie (as it became known) was associated with supposed Catholic idolatry and during the English Civil War was frowned on by the Puritan authorities. Nevertheless, the tradition of eating Christmas pie in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced markedly from the large oblong shape once observed. Today the mince pie remains a popular seasonal treat enjoyed by many across the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T0X - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNRN - Little Chef had a spin-off brand called Little Chef Express which Forte developed in 1995 as a rival to fast food outlets. The first Express outlet was at the Markham Moor service station (A1 North), though only as an addition to the existing Little Chef menu there. However, only five restaurants were ever built on the roadside, and the idea was re-developed when Little Chef was taken over by Compass, with the Express take outs being set up in food courts, including one in the Eurostar terminal
Little Chef was a chain of restaurants in the United Kingdom, founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Sam Alper, who was inspired by American diners. The chain was famous for the Olympic Breakfast its version of a full English as well as its Early Starter and Jubilee Pancakes. The restaurants were mostly located on the roadside near A roads, often paired with a Travelodge motel, a Burger King and a petrol station. The chain was also located along motorways in Moto Services, for a time.
The chain expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s, and its parent company would acquire the Happy Eater chain in the 1980s, its only major roadside competitor. When its owners converted all Happy Eater restaurants to Little Chef in the late 1990s, this allowed it to peak in scale with 439 restaurants. Little Chef began to face decline in the early 2000s, this mainly due to the chain expanding too fast, meaning it could not properly invest in all of its locations. Compared to its peak in the late 1990s, by 2005 the chain had lost almost half of its locations.
In 2007, the chain entered administration, marking 41 out of 239 restaurants to close. This was followed by another closure programme in 2012 to reduce the chain to 94 restaurants. In early 2017, licence owners Kout Food Group sold the remaining 70 locations to Euro Garages, who would convert the restaurants into their partner franchises such as Starbucks, Subway and Greggs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DECXB8 - Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. (At the 11th hour refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919.
The day was specifically dedicated by King George V on 7 November 1919 as a day of remembrance for members of the armed forces who were killed during World War I. This was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.
The Initial or Very First Armistice Day was held at Buckingham Palace commencing with King George V hosting a Banquet in Honour of The President of the French Republic during the evening hours of November 10 1919. The First Official Armistice Day was subsequently held on the Grounds of Buckingham Palace on the Morning of November 11th 1919. This would set the trend for a day of Remembrance for decades to come.
The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem In Flanders Fields. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYMCM - A cigar is a rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco leaves made to be smoked. They are produced in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Since the 20th century, almost all cigars are made up of three distinct components: the filler, the binder leaf which holds the filler together, and a wrapper leaf, which is often the best leaf used. Often the cigar will have a band printed with the cigar manufacturer's logo. Modern cigars often come with 2 bands, especially Cuban Cigar bands, showing Limited Edition (Edición Limitada) bands displaying the year of production.
Cigar tobacco is grown in significant quantities primarily in Central America and the islands of the Caribbean, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, and Puerto Rico
it is also produced in the Eastern United States, the Mediterranean countries of Italy and Spain (in the Canary Islands), and in Indonesia and the Philippines of Southeast Asia.
The origins of cigar smoking are unknown. A Mayan ceramic pot from Guatemala dating back to the 10th century depicts people smoking tobacco leaves tied with a string.
Regular cigar smoking is known to carry serious health risks including increased risk of developing various types of cancer and cardiovascular illnesses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJNDD - The phonograph, record player, or gramophone (from the Greek: gramma, letter and phōnē, voice), is a device introduced in 1877 for the recording and reproduction of sound recordings. The recordings played on such a device consist of waveforms that are engraved onto a rotating cylinder or disc. As the cylinder or disc rotates, a stylus or needle traces the waveforms and vibrates to reproduce the recorded sound waves.
The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison's phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. His phonograph originally recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder, and could both record and reproduce sounds.
Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory made several improvements in the 1880s, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders, and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a zig zag pattern across the record. At the turn of the 20th century, Emile Berliner initiated the transition from phonograph cylinders to gramophone records: flat, double-sided discs with a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center.
Other improvements were made throughout the years, including modifications to the turntable and its drive system, the needle and stylus, and the sound and equalization systems.
The gramophone record was one of the dominant audio recording formats throughout much of the 20th century. From the mid-1980s, phonograph use declined sharply because of the rise of the Compact Disc and other digital recording formats. While no longer mass market items, modest numbers of phonographs and phonograph records continue to be produced in the second decade of the 21st century.

The red dress effect is the phenomena at which females wearing red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than when wearing other colours.
Naturally, when many non-human primate females become fertile, their estrogen level rises, which causes their blood vessels to open up, leading to redness on the skin, especially near the face, chest and genitalia regions. This increased in redness has been shown to attract male counterparts, shown by their increased activity in sex, self-stimulation and attention towards the females. Therefore, there are reasons to believe of the existence of evolutionary instincts that associates red with fertility.
Many folklores, mythology and literature symbols associate red with fertility, and woman are thought to have worn the equivalent of a red lipstick as early as 10,000 B.C. and so sexual receptiveness and red may be a result of social conditioning. However, this social conditioning may have originated from biology and evolution, and is simply an extension of our primal instincts.

This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, \u00a32.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was 'the sweet leaf.' ('Sweetleaf' is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!
If this floats your boat, check out some of these other banging tracks, all to be found on the various Black Sabbath compilations out there:

A track that nearly brings tears to my eyes, a memory of a very low time.
But why is it that women like shoes so much? Now I am looking for comments from you lady contacts and those male contacts who do appreciate relaxing in nylons and fine Italian leather....
Shoes are beautiful objects, no doubt about that. Nice shoes are a piece of art. It feels good for females to hold them, look at them, and most importantly wear them. Like a nice china pot that can be held and investigated.
Maybe you look at your shoe collection in the same way that an art collector looks at her art collection. Do you have a much better sense of yourself when you wear nice shoes or boots?
When you think about a wardrobe full of shoes, do you feel safe and satisfied? Do you love the feeling of buying new shoes, wearing them and then looking at yourself in a mirror?
Then you might be tempted.........
Squeeze are a British band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the New Wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording successfully in the 1980s and 1990s. They are known in the UK for their hit songs 'Cool for Cats', 'Up the Junction', 'Tempted', 'Labelled With Love', 'Black Coffee In Bed', 'Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)', and 'Hourglass'. Though not quite as commercially successful in the U.S., 'Tempted', 'Hourglass' and '853-5937' were all American chart hits for Squeeze, and the band have a dedicated following there and continue to attract new fans. All of Squeeze's hits were written by band members Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.
The group formed in Deptford, London in 1975, and first broke up in 1982. Squeeze then reformed in 1985, and broke up again in 1999.

Well it took me a while to get to a hundred images. I hope you enjoyed the journey!
There were many bands I will have to come back to in 'son of iPod Shuffle' some time in the future. So expect more Magazine, Pink Floyd, Elbow, Cabaret Voltaire, Fall, John cale, Decemberists, Joy Division, Deep Purple, Qemist, Ruts, Smiths, Todd Rundgren, Vaselines and X-Wife when I get back to this.
If you have enjoyed it or any of the music has moved you, feel free to leave a commet on the set.
------------------------
'Sheena Is a Punk Rocker' is a song by the punk rock group The Ramones. It first appeared on their third LP, 'Rocket to Russia', in 1977, and was also included on later pressings of the group's second album, 'Leave Home'. It was released as a single, reaching no 81 in the US, and no 22 in the UK singles charts, backed with 'I Don't Care', which was also included on Rocket to Russia. I have a battered copy in my loft somewhere.
The song was written by Joey Ramone, and is one of the Ramones' more popular and enduring songs, showing the band's surf rock influences.
The Ramones were an American rock band that formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York in 1974. they have been cited as the first punk rock group. Despite achieving only limited commercial success, the band was a major influence on the punk rock movement both in the United States and the United Kingdom.
All of the band members adopted pseudonyms ending with the surname 'Ramone', though none of them were related. They performed 2,263 concerts, touring virtually nonstop for 22 years.
In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played a farewell concert and disbanded. By a little more than eight years after the breakup, the band's three founding members\u2014lead singer Joey Ramone, guitarist Johnny Ramone, and bassist Dee Dee Ramone\u2014had died.

As fresh today as it was nearly 30 years ago. Witty, ironic and close to danceable (surely theres a 12' cut of this???). This single, 'I Love a Man in a Uniform', was banned by the BBC during the Falklands War in 1982. Not alone, 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' by the New Zealand pop group Split Enz to be a criticism of the war, and the song was also banned by the BBC. The Fixx single Stand or Fall was given little radio play due to its anti-war lyrics, which coincided with the Falklands conflict.
One of the best things to come out of Leeds since the First Trans-Pennine express out to Manchester &
Liverpool, Gang Of Four were most active between 1977 &
1984.
singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill were heavily influenced by a university-funded trip to New York, where they saw Television and the Ramones at CBGB's. Apparently, music writer Greil Marcus found his first viewing of the group's performance so shattering that he left after their set, rather than risk having the impact of the deeply political Gang of Four's songs dampened by the pop-punk of Buzzcocks.
I still have the Fast Product first release, 'Damaged Goods' B/W '(Love Like) Anthrax' and 'Armalite Rifle', from June 1978. This led to two Peel radio sessions, which, with their incendiary live performances, propelled the band to international attention and sold-out shows across Europe and North America. They were then signed by EMI records.
GO4 influenced many bands through the years including REM, . Kurt Cobain stated that Nirvana started as 'a Gang of Four ripoff'.
To hear more, track down 'A Brief History of the Twentieth Century' a great compilation. Tell 'em I sent you.

The adoption and continuing use of red by most English soldiers after the Restoration (1660) was the result of circumstances rather than policy, including the relative cheapness of red dyes. Red was by no means universal at first, with grey and blue coats also being worn.
There is no known basis for the myth that red coats were favoured because they did not show blood stains. Blood does in fact show on red clothing as a black stain.
Even after the adoption of khaki service dress in 1902, most British infantry and some cavalry regiments continued to wear scarlet tunics on parade and for off-duty 'walking out dress', until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Albert Greene (born April 13, 1946) better known as Al Green, is an American gospel and soul music singer.
In 2005, Rolling Stone named him no 65 in their list of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time'. The nomination, written by Justin Timberlake, stated that 'people are born to do certain things, and Al was born to make us smile.'
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Green in 1995, referring to him as 'one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music.' Green has sold more than 20 million records. In 2000, Green published Take Me to the River, a book discussing his career. Green received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

Inns Quay is where you find Four Courts, across Dublin's river Liffey.
The Four Courts was built between 1786 and 1796 by renowned architect James Gandon, while the finishing touches to the arcades and wings were completed in 1802. The lands were previously used by the King's Inns. The building originally housed the four courts of Chancery, King's Bench, Exchequer, and Common Pleas, hence the name of the building.
A major revision in the court system in the late nineteenth century saw these courts replaced, but the building has retained its historic name. This courts system remained until 1924, when the new Irish Free State introduced a new courts structure, replacing the old High Court of Ireland, the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland and the Lord Chancellor of Ireland with a new Supreme Court presided over by the Chief Justice and a High Court of Justice, presided over by the President of the High Court.

Wales has been under represented in my iPod artists so far, so hopefully I can start to put that right here. 'The Bartender and the Thief' is a 1998 single by British rock band the Stereophonics. It was the first single taken from their second album Performance and Cocktails. It was released in November 1998 and reached no 3 in the UK charts.
The song, which is one of their heavier tracks, is frequently played amongst their live sets. During live performances, vocalist Kelly Jones has been known to utilise the two bars without vocals before the final chorus to reference the Motorhead song 'Ace of Spades'. The lyrics therefore are 'The ace of spades, the ace of spades. The bartender and the thief were lovers...'
Strangely, the song's full length intro only featured on the CD1 single (and in the music video), but was edited off the Performance &
Cocktails album.

The Saracens Head was the 'brewery tap' pub next to the old Warrington Greenall's Brewery. The concern was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the Company relocated to Warrington in 1787.
It ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels. Greenall's owned beer brands were brewed by Allied Breweries at their Leeds and Burton plant. Greenall's ale can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although it is thankfully slowly disappearing and often only the 'Greenall's Mild' brand can be found.
For a short while I lived fairly close to the pub and enjoyed many a good guest pint in there. I was told it was a good place to pick up the odd piece of hot property, but no-one offered me anything while I was drinking there. It has rrecently been given a lick of paint and has become a JW Lees pub. When they are serving food, apparently the hand cut chips are worth a look.

Up there in my all time top 20 this old Stiff records track. I still have an orange vinyl BUY17 in my loft with 'Razzle In My Pocket' on the B-Side. Only two members of Ian Dury and the Blockheads appear on the record, the song's co-writer and guitarist Chas Jankel and saxophonist Davey Payne. Dury started out in the early 70's in pub rock band, Kilburn &
The high Roads
Released as it was in the height of the popularity of punk rock, the song was misinterpreted (as it is often is to this day) as a song about excess as its title and chorus would suggest. Although the single was banned by the BBC, a number of Radio 1 disc jockeys, including Annie Nightingale and John Peel, continued to promote the record by playing the mildly salacious B-side 'Razzle In My Pocket'.
Dury himself, however maintained that the song was not a punk anthem and said he was trying to suggest that there was more to life than a 9-to-5 existence (such as in his track-by-track comments in the sleeve-notes of Repertoire Record's Reasons To Be Cheerful: The Best Of Ian Dury &
The Blockheads compilation). The verses themselves are at times somewhat riddle-like, although always suggestive of an alternative lifestyle:
Here's a little bit of advice, you're quite welcome, it is free
Don\u2019t do nothing that is cut-price, you'll know what they'll make you be
They will try their tricky device, trap you with the ordinary
Get your teeth into a small slice, the cake of liberty.
Stiff Records organised a joint tour on a train, for Nick Lowe, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis and Elvis Costello, five of their biggest acts at the time with the intentions of having the bands alternating as the headlining act. Ian Dury and the newly formed Blockheads soon became the stars of the tour, which cost far more than expected, almost bankrupting Stiff.
For a good intro to the late great Ian Dury, checkout the 'New Boots &
Panty's first album. I have a cherished gold vinyl pressing that has virtually had the groves worn out of it.

The 98 has always been operated by Metroline, based at the Willesden garage. It was initially operated using Routemasters on Mondays to Saturdays in the daytime and Dennis Darts, Metrobuses and Leyland Titans on Sundays and late evenings.
In early 2004, the 98 was one of the many routes in London that were converted from Routemasters to low-floor vehicles.
The 98 also has night service N98 that follows the route from Holborn to Willesden and continues via Kingsbury, Queensbury and Neasden to Stanmore Station.

Todays first track up on my Ipod shuffle was this one. Its is the first in my new set that hopefully will marry up some of my listening habits with some of my photographic ones!
I dont have chance to 'shuffle' every day, so unfortunately it wont be one a day, but do keep up if you can!
Salford Northern Soul club night DJ Ian Brown and animator John Squire were the hub of this band. A bit of a soundtrack to my own Madchester days back in the late 1980's. Blimey I must have spent a fortune in Aflecks Palace on dodgy Harris Tweed Jackets (check the Orb) and silk ties.
The brilliant first seminal album and the wrangling later with the Silvertone label is legendary. The Second Coming was good, but those four years delay took their toll. Ian Brown, now into his 10th solo album has gone on to better things including the 'Q Awards Legend Award' in 2007.
His 2001 track 'Fear' is one of my favourites. Apparently inspired by Malcolm X and his preaching of 'control through language', each line contains an acronym from the word 'fear'. EG 'Fallen empires are ruling'. Grab a listen here.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4749916828 - 'St Helen's, Witton, also known as 'Northwich Parish Church' towers over the town. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches.
The church was originally a chapel of ease to St Mary and All Saints, Great Budworth and the area was then known as Witton. The present building dates from the 14th century, with additions in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries.
A tradition that Witton had a chapel as early as the 13th century cannot be verified, but by the mid-14th century a church (technically a chapel of ease) stood on the present site. It was roughly the same length as the current building, had transepts but no aisles, side chapels or clerestory, and was covered by a steeply-pitched roof rising from about the height of the present arcade. There would have been a chancel arch with a great beam or loft across it bearing a rood, but no chancel step. The only seats would have been stone benches around the walls.
Gradually this evolved into the church as it is today. North and south aisles, narrower than those currently present, were added in the 15th century. The tower was built or rebuilt in about 1498, and the name \u2018Thomas Hunter\u2019 prominently displayed on it indicates it was the work of the mason of that name who was also associated with nearby Norton Priory outside Runcorn.
The church is built in red sandstone with flattish roofs concealed by parapets. The plan consists of a tower at the west end, a six-bay nave with north and south aisles, a chancel with a polygonal east apse, a vestry to the north and a south porch. The tower has four stages, is crenellated and has diagonal buttresses and a west door. Above this is a four-light window, two-light bellringers' windows on the north and south faces, an empty niche on the west face, a clock with faces to all sides and paired two-light bell openings

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4693817995 - 'Primula is a genus of around 400 species of low-growing herbs in the family Primulaceae. They include primrose, auricula, cowslip and oxlip. Many species are grown for their ornamental flowers. They are native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere, south into tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and in temperate southern South America.
Perennial primulas bloom mostly during the spring
their flowers can be purple, yellow, red, pink, or white. Generally, they prefer filtered sunlight. Many species are adapted to alpine climates.
The word primula is the Latin feminine diminutive of primus, meaning first (prime), applied to flowers that are among the first to open in spring.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4587919792 - 'Few plants captivate a nation quite like the Japanese flowering cherry or 'cherry blossom'. Pick up a 100 yen coin and at any time of the year it reminds you of the Sakura.
In Japan cherry blossoms among other things symbolize clouds. This is due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition that is often associated with Buddhistic influence, and which is embodied in the concept of 'mono no aware' (the life of things). The association of the cherry blossom with 'mono no aware' dates back to 18th-century scholar Motoori Norinaga.
The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality. For this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect. The band Kagrra, which is associated with the visual kei movement, is an example of this latter phenomenon. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled 'Sakura', and several pop songs. The flower is also represented on all manner of consumer goods in Japan, including kimono, stationery, and dishware.
Cherry blossom is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love, affection and represents spring. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art.
At Himeji Castle Japan During World War II, the cherry blossom was used to motivate the Japanese people, to stoke nationalism and militarism among the populace. Japanese pilots would paint them on the sides of their planes before embarking on a suicide mission, or even take branches of the trees with them on their missions. There is a plane of this type in the Manchester museum of science of industry. My friend Josef Knocke always comes to mind when I look at it as does a particularly tasteless joke, that I would not repeat here for a family audience.
A cherry blossom painted on the side of the bomber symbolized the intensity and ephemerality of life. In this way, the aesthetic association was altered such that falling cherry petals came to represent the sacrifice of youth in suicide missions to honor the emperor. The government even encouraged the people to believe that the souls of downed warriors were reincarnated in the blossoms.
In its colonial enterprises, aparently imperial Japan often planted cherry trees as a means of 'claiming occupied territory as Japanese space'. Consider this as you pass below those lovely pink blossoms...

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHW0 - Tobermory distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery situated on the Hebridean island of Mull, Scotland in the town of Tobermory. The distillery, which was formerly known as Ledaig, was founded in 1798 and has changed hands several times, having undergone a number of periods of closure. The only distillery on Mull, it is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, a subsidiary of Distell Group Limited of South Africa. Its main product, Tobermory single malt, is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig.
The Tobermory Single Malt is distilled from unpeated malted barley and matured in oak casks for at least ten years. A heavily peated whisky is also produced, but in small quantities, named Ledaig after the original distillery name. The malts are used in a number of blends including Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The water for the distillery comes from a private loch near to the Mishnish lochs. The branding had been confused under previous owners, with the Tobermory brand being used for both a single malt and a blended whisky.
Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing a million litres of spirit a year. It uses a traditional copperdomed cast iron mash tun, four washbacks made of Oregon pine, and four spirit stills. The whisky is matured in both former bourbon whiskey and sherry casks. Maturation takes place at the distillery at Deanston.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4470128554 - 'Another lady smoker with a rollie. For whatever reason, maybe that rampent taxation on tabs etc, you seem to see much more of this these days. Most smokers are of course banished to the cold street, or outside of pubs these days in Britain. In fact the constituant countries of the UK almost shamefully fell over themselves to be the first to ban smokers in pubs and public places like theatres and bingo halls etc.
This has led to the sad decline and closure of well over one pub a week across the UK. I believe bad pubs should go to the wall much like bad plumbers. Although many good, well run and historically significant hostelries are unfortunately closing too. This worrying side effect has made the supermarkets richer. Even off-licence chains such as Threshers and Victoria Wine are unable to compete with cheap supermarket booze and that brought in by the van load from the continent.
You can help highlight the plight of the traditional boozer by investing in a 'Drink Beer and Carry On' T-Shirt from www.drinkbeerandcarryon.co.uk/ . Have a look at savetheboozer.blogspot.com/ and connect with your heritage. After all, when its gone, ITS GONE!

Macro tubes used here without flash to give a more than life size image.
The Amaryllis is a tender bulb which originated in the Andes mountains of South America. Naturally flowering in December/January it is popular for adding some christmas colour in the northern hemisphere over christmas.
Therefore, unfortunately, it can only be grown outdoors, year round in USDA zones 9-11. In other zones, the potted plants may be moved outdoors after the danger of frost has passed but must be brought back indoors in September.
Amaryllis may be purchased as individually packaged or bulk bulbs, but more often are sold in a pre-potted condition. The pre-planted Amaryllis gift boxes normally take no more initial effort than simply watering them with room temperature water to bring them into growth. Avoid getting water on the nose of the bulb. Keep the potting medium moist, but not wet. Be careful, don't over-water!
The plant should be kept in a brightly lighted area at about 70-75 degrees f. After the plant begins to grow, feeding is essential. Either use a complete slow- release fertilizer which lasts several months, or a water soluble fertilizer twice a month. Once the plant is flowering, keep it out of direct sunlight, and slightly cooler to promote a longer flower life. After all flowers fade, cut them off at the top of the stalk. When the stalk begins to sag, carefully cut it off just above the bulb nose. Continue to water and fertilize as normal, until the leaves begin to yellow. At this time, cut the leaves back to about 2 inches from the top of the bulb and remove it from the pot. Keep the bulb in a cool (40-50 degree f), dark place for a minimum of 6-8 weeks.
Plant bulbs 8 weeks before you would like them to bloom.
Any time after that, you may repot the bulb, and begin the process over again. Bulbs may be planted at two week intervals, from September through February to ensure non-stop winter bloom, until May.
Plant in a well-drained, sterile potting medium, using a standard 6-inch diameter pot. Be sure that the pot has adequate drainage holes. Plant the bulb, with about one-third being above the rim of the pot. Press the soil down firmly to set the bulb securely in place. Water thoroughly, and your plant will begin anew.

'Red Frame/White Light' is the second single of the synthpop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The song quite boringly is about the red telephone box in Meols that was used by the band to make calls to organise their gigs.
The telephone box that inspired 'Red Frame/White Light' is located at the crossing of Birkenhead Road and Greenwood Road countryCode=GB#map=53.4011,-3.15818|17|4&
bd=useful_information&
loc=GB:53.4011:-3.15818:17|4 Greenwood Road, meols|4 Greenwood Road, Meols, Wirral, Merseyside, England, CH47 6\' rel=\'nofollow\'>in Meols. In the nearby pub 'The Railway Inn' the band would meet and used the telephone box to organise their gigs and transportation.
In the songs lyrics the phone number is mentioned: 6323003. Fans would ring the number expecting to get one of the band members, but got a confused home owner in their own area code. Over the years it has become a kind of sacred place for OMD fans. In 2004 OMD fan Stephen Cork started a successful campaign to get the telephone box repainted in time for a fan tour on April 10, 2005.

Penrhyn Castle is a country house in Llandegai, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, in the form of a Norman castle. It was originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted a licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle and added a tower house. Samuel Wyatt reconstructed the property in the 1780s.
The present building was created between 1820 and 1845 to designs by Thomas Hopper, who expanded and transformed the building beyond recognition. However a spiral staircase from the original property can still be seen, and a vaulted basement and other masonry were incorporated into the new structure. Hopper's clients were the Dawkins-Pennant family, who had made their fortune from Jamaican sugar and local slate quarries.
This image was shot using a Hoya R72 infra red filter. Vegetation appears very white and blue skies deep black.

This classic track can be found on 'A Beard of Stars'. Its the fourth album by Tyrannosaurus Rex (Trex), comprising Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar, organ, bass) and the first with new partner Mickey Finn (percussion). It was released in March 1970. It is notable for the beginning of Bolan using electric instruments on the T.Rex albums.
Early Tyrannosaurus Rex released four albums and four singles, flirting with the charts, reaching as high as number fifteen and supported with airplay by legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel. One of the highlights of this era was when the duo played at the first free Hyde Park concert in 1968.
Although the free-spirited, drug-taking Steve Took was fired from the group after their first American tour, they were a force to be reckoned within the hippy underground scene while they lasted. Their music was filled with Marc's otherworldly poetry, a book of which he published in 1969, 'The Warlock Of Love'. In keeping with his early rock and roll interests, Bolan began bringing amplified guitar lines into the duo's music, buying a vintage Gibson Les Paul guitar (later featured on the cover of the album T. Rex in 1970).
After replacing Took with Mickey Finn, he let the electric influences come forward even further on A Beard of Stars, the final album to be credited to Tyrannosaurus Rex. It closed with the song 'Elemental Child,' featuring a long electric guitar break influenced by Jimi Hendrix.
Bolan, by now married to his girlfriend June Child (a former secretary to the manager of another of his heroes, Syd Barrett), shortened the group's name to T. Rex and wrote and recorded 'Ride a White Swan', dominated by a rolling, hand clapping back-beat, Bolan's electric guitar and Finn's percussion.
Bolan and his producer Tony Visconti oversaw the session for 'Ride a White Swan', the single that changed Bolan's career. Recorded on 1 July 1970 and released later that year, it made slow progress in the UK Top 40, until it finally peaked in early 1971 at number two.
Bolan took to wearing top hats and feather boas on stage as well as putting drops of glitter on each of his cheekbones. Stories are conflicting about his inspiration for this\u2014some say it was introduced by his personal assistant, Chelita Secunda, although Bolan told John Pidgeon in a 1974 interview on Radio 1 that he noticed the glitter on his wife's dressing table prior to a photo session and casually daubed some on his face there and then. Other performers\u2014and their fans\u2014soon took up variations on the idea. Glam rock was born.
This infra-red image almost swaps night for day here. A Hoya R72 filter was used.
