Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEFXW - Historic CAMRA commemorative mirror displayed inside The Peveril of the Peak on Great Bridgewater Street in Manchester, with a vase of spring tulips placed below it. The mirror marks landlady Nancy Swanick's 40 years at the pub, recording the Trafford & Hulme Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale and the dates 25th January 1971 to 25th January 2011. The image combines pub history, real ale culture, Manchester social life and a personal tribute to one of the city's best-known traditional pub figures. The Peveril of the Peak is a Grade II listed Manchester pub, recognised for its distinctive green tiled exterior and historic interior, and remains strongly associated with cask ale, CAMRA campaigning and the survival of independent pub character in the city centre. The mirror's reflective surface shows part of the room behind, while the handwritten-style lettering, branch details and CAMRA reference make it a valuable documentary image of pub memorabilia and beer heritage. The fresh red, yellow and orange tulips add colour, softness and a seasonal spring note to an otherwise muted interior scene, suggesting care, remembrance and continued affection for the pub and its long-serving landlady. The photograph is useful for editorial features on Manchester pubs, historic pub interiors, CAMRA, real ale, cask beer, women in pub history, long-serving licensees, community pubs, urban drinking culture, pub preservation, heritage interiors, local history and traditional public houses as social meeting places. Visible text includes The Campaign for Real Ale , Trafford & Hulme Branch , 25th January 1971 , 25th January 2011 and Presented to commemorate , all relevant for picture researchers seeking authentic CAMRA and Peveril of the Peak material. The warm indoor light, cream wall, glass vase and reflected architecture give the image a quiet archive quality, suitable for stories about pub culture, Manchester memory, beer campaigning and small details of social history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93479 - Close-up editorial view of a polished brass beer engine and handpull dispensing Draught Bass at Bacchus Bar in central Birmingham. The famous red triangle pump clip dominates the frame, with mirrored bar fittings, backlit bottles and a classic pub back bar softly out of focus behind it. This is a strongly recognisable piece of British beer heritage, linking one of the country's best-known historic bitter brands with a traditional city-centre pub setting that still values cask and handpulled ale. The image works well for themes including real ale revival, pub interiors, beer culture, licensed trade, hospitality, CAMRA interest, Midlands drinking heritage and the continued appeal of classic British bitters in an era often dominated by bland keg fonts and identikit bar design. The gleaming metalwork, warm amber reflections and sharp branding give the photograph a rich documentary feel suited to editorial use about pubs, brewing history, draught beer, consumer nostalgia, traditional bar service and the survival of characterful drinking venues in modern urban Britain. It also captures the tactile visual details that matter to ale drinkers: the handpump, the branded clip, the polished dispense equipment and the sense of anticipation before a pint is pulled. Useful for stories about Birmingham pubs, Nicholson's houses, classic ale brands, British pub restoration, city nightlife, heritage interiors, drinks journalism and the enduring symbolic power of Bass as one of the best-known names in UK beer. Because the composition is tight and uncluttered, the picture also lends itself to wider commercial and editorial search terms such as pub bar pump, cask bitter, English ale, traditional boozer, beer badge, draught dispense, cellar-to-glass service, pub counter, bar equipment, drinking culture, after-work pint, weekend socialising and the preservation of older drinking rituals within busy contemporary city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENH - Taken on 05 Sep 2023, this photograph shows The Seven Stars pub - 53 Carey St, Holborn, London, England, UK, WC2A 3QS. The location is 53 Carey St, London, England, UK, WC2A 3QS. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. The Seven Stars on Carey Street is a celebrated small Holborn pub with long-standing claims around 1602 and survival beyond the Great Fire period, though the exact dating is often treated with caution. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Carey Street, pub, Seven Stars, London, 7 Stars, The Seven Stars, sign, exterior, 1602, Holborn, South East, English, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. Because the subject is clearly labelled or visually distinctive, it can also work well in search-led usage where the buyer needs immediate recognition at small web-preview size. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastruc.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMENN - The Seven Stars is a Grade II listed public house at 53-54 Carey Street, Holborn, London. It is unusual for having survived the Great Fire of London.
It probably originated in the 17th century, and it is dated 1602, and was formerly known as The Log and Seven Stars.
Whilst the frontage may bear the date 1602, the building itself is likely to date from the 1680s.
The interior served as a filming location for a scene in the movie All the Old Knives

The resulting Pale Ale was a long way off what Geoff had in mind, but nevertheless, was consumed with relish after a tantalising wait for fermentation and bottle-conditioning to run their course. Over the following months, recipes were tweaked, altered, thrown away and revived as they searched out information online and in countless books and picked the brains of generous and far more experienced brewers.
Within 12 months, with positive feedback and enthusiasm, the decision to take brewing to the next level and go ˜commercial' was made and for a while Buxton ˜cuckoo-brewed' at another local microbrewery. In January 2010, with Geoff ˜going for it' full-time, brewing on a second-hand 800 litre plant began in earnest.
Fast-forward 9 years and the team, which has steadily grown to be 11 strong is now based in a 7000 square foot modern building on Staden Lane, Buxton. Its custom designed and (British) built brewhouse produces around 3500 litres per brew, 3 times per week.
The brewery makes upwards of 30 distinct brews of all kinds and has many other special editions both planned and in its back-catalogue. Innovation and super-high quality are the prime goals, along with a nod to tradition and an almost maniacal attention to detail.
All of the beers the brewery produces are designed to delight the senses and enthral the drinker. Not all beers are created equal, some are big and strong and full of powerful hops and malts, others are lighter, and have subtle nuances of flavour and aroma. All are intended to be enjoyed as a lovingly hand made product, nurtured by a small team of dedicated beer lovers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6ND - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street off Hope Street in Liverpool, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG92W3 - Interior detail showing the ceiling inside The Star Inn on Church Street in Godalming, Surrey, covered with dozens of historic real ale pump clips and beer badges collected from breweries across Britain and beyond. The photograph records a colourful, densely packed display of cask ale branding, brewery artwork, local beer names, pump clip typography and pub memorabilia above the bar area of a traditional English public house. The warm indoor lighting, timber beams and crowded ceiling create strong pub character.
The Star is a long-established Godalming pub with a strong reputation for real ale, cider and perry. The pub's own history notes a tavern on the site from 1832, with the present building retaining older character, while CAMRA describes The Star as a beerhouse from soon after 1830, with parts of the building older still. CAMRA also records the pub as offering up to 14 cask ales at busy times, alongside ciders and perries, and notes that hundreds of pub clips hang between the dark oak beams. This makes the image useful for illustrating beer collecting, brewery heritage, CAMRA culture, cask ale traditions, independent pubs and local drinking places.
Pump clips are an important part of British real ale culture because they identify the beer, brewery, strength, style and the humour or visual identity behind each brew. A ceiling full of them becomes a documentary archive of changing breweries, seasonal ales, regional brewing, pub festivals and the social networks around beer enthusiasts. The image also reflects wider themes including hospitality, leisure, pub tourism, community, alcohol retail, small breweries, traditional interiors and the preservation of characterful public houses in market towns. The visible ceiling display turns an everyday pub interior into a textured record of Britain's brewing scene, with bright labels and badges adding colour and commercial visual interest for editorial uses linked to beer, pubs, tourism and social life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7XFE1 - A traditional British pie is served on a white plate beside a pint of real ale in a pub, with low sunlight shining through the amber beer and across the polished wooden table. The image captures a classic pub moment, combining savoury comfort food, cask ale culture, beer drinking, lunch, leisure and the social atmosphere of a traditional British public house. It is a useful editorial stock photograph for stories about CAMRA, real ale, pub food, independent breweries, beer festivals, British cuisine, hospitality, town pubs, country pubs and the continuing cultural importance of the local. The pie's glossy crust, the deep colour of the ale, the coaster, dark pub interior and warm evening light create a nostalgic and appetising scene without needing visible customers or staff. The photograph can illustrate debates about the survival of pubs, rising hospitality costs, beer duty, food inflation, changing drinking habits, cask ale sales, brewery closures and the pressure on community pubs. It also works well for lighter features on pie and pint offers, pub lunches, traditional snacks, regional food, tourism, weekend breaks, walking routes, real ale trails and the simple pleasure of stopping for food and a proper beer. The CAMRA reference gives the image extra relevance for buyers looking for authentic British beer culture rather than generic bar imagery, especially where cask-conditioned ale, hand-pulled beer, pub heritage and consumer choice are part of the story. The strong sunburst through the pint gives visual drama, while the food and drink remain clearly identifiable. As a documentary lifestyle image, it records an everyday but culturally loaded British pub scene, where beer, food, friendship, local identity and licensed premises all meet around a small table.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9K - Sitting sweetly on the bank of the River Medlock, just up the road from Oxford Road, the Lass O' Gowrie is an ancient and venerable Irish (but originally Scottish) pub and Manchester landmark, appearing on maps as early as 1844, back when it stood next to the Garratt Cotton Mill. Back then it was surrounded by hardcore slums which are now modern housing for a modern Manchester.
Complete with original tilework and fittings, the Lass sees a cheerful and diverse crowd on Fridays and Saturdays. It's very popular for post-work drinks or as a staging post on your way to Canal Street or the Northern Quarter.
One of the Lass O' Gowrie's unique features is its balcony-based smoking area, built out over the river below (and well-secured with high walls, so don't worry about stumbling). There's something very special about this particular slice of the city, with the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel off to the north, the opposite balcony of Joshua Brooks just to your east, and the pleasant sounds of the River Medlock filling the evening.
What's on the tap? Well, first and foremost the answer is Guinness, and that's what we recommend to be in keeping with the theme. But you should also check out the various craft beers on the list, like Tollgate Brewery's Belmorado pale ale. Guest beers circulate through the tap month by month, so there's always something new to try. The Lass O' Gowrie can also offer a selection of jolly bar snacks for all you pork scratching aficionados out there.
Listing NGR: SJ8431397523 - As it's surrounded by exciting developments like Circle Square, the Lass O' Gowrie caters to a diverse crowd of students, professionals, and tourists, so whoever you are, you're bound to find a warm welcome in the pub's surprisingly large interior.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF7FB4 - Ye Olde Starre Inne is a pub in the city centre of York, in England. The main block of the pub is a timber-framed structure, constructed in the mid-16th century, and a wing to its left was added in about 1600. By 1644, it was an inn named The Starre, the buildings lying at the back of a coaching yard, off the north side of Stonegate. This makes it the pub in York which can demonstrate the earliest date for its licence. After the Battle of Marston Moor the inn was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
Pub sign across Stonegate
In 1662, the pub was sold for £250, and in 1683, Edward Thompson inherited it. In 1733, the pub's landlord was Thomas Bulman, and he signed an agreement with the owners of two shops on Stonegate that he could attach a sign to their premises, to hang across the street. A sign advertising the pub has hung across the street ever since.
The pub was extended in the early-18th century. In the 1840s, with the coming of the railway, the coaching yard was infilled with a new building, and the pub is now approached via a passageway underneath part of this building. Stables lay behind the pub and could be accessed from Duncombe Place, making the pub a popular location for visiting actors and circus performers.
In the late-19th century, the pub was again extended, at which time, it was known as Boddy's Inn. Surviving internal features include an early-18th century staircase, some 17th-century panelling, and an assortment of benches, glass and panelling from the 19th-century refit. Its former bar screen, of stained glass, probably dates from the 1890s and is believed to have been designed by J. W. Knowles & Co. who were based at 35 Stonegate.
In 1954, the pub was grade II listed

The bar at the Village Hall has been run under licence, free form tie, by Derek & Alison Massey since July 2004, and is now managed by their son, Chris Massey.
The bar was originally set up by the Village Hall committee, but due to the Hall's charitable status, is now run separately with a rent payable. It still operates as a stock-photo/gotonysmith-Members.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>members bar although visitors are welcome for a nominal fee and a visitors book exists for this purpose.
When originally opened, the bar was tied to John Smith's Brewery but quickly became free from tie and was amongst the first outlets in the area to stock real ale. We now regularly feature in the CAMRA Club of the Year contest and are awarded for the condition of the seven ever-changing real ales on offer. We currently hold the title for the Local and Regional CAMRA Club of the Year, and are in the final 4 for the whole country.
The Village Hall offers a warm welcome to members in the cosy lounge or more spacious hall, and as well as our excellent real ales, we also have a well stocked bar offering an excellent range of beers, wines and spirits and in particular, Gin!

The Appleton Thorn Village Hall near Warrington has been named the best in the country in CAMRA's Club of the Year 2019 awards, one of the most respected and well-known club awards in the UK.
This is the second time and almost 10 years to the date that the former school has won the accolade for its ever-changing range of seven beers from regional and micro-breweries. The attractive sandstone building is the hub of the community, housing a comfortable bar area, small pool room, garden area and bowling green. Home cooked food is served at Sunday lunchtime and the function room hosts quizzes, live music and an annual beer festival in October. The recent addition of a gin bar has proved popular with the club's members.
Keith Spencer, Club of the Year organiser said: This club is the very hub of the community, from hosting pre-school events to yoga, dance, Guides and rehearsals for the Vale Royal String Orchestra! It is a very deserving winning of this year's Club of the Year competition and a shining example of the intrinsic role that clubs can play in their local areas.
Chris Massey, Steward of the Appleton Thorn Village Hall said: It is a huge honour to not only win the Club of the Year title once “ but twice! We are a true community club and take pride in hosting a range of activities and events for our locals and serving great beers as well.
The CAMRA Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine, with the simple aim of finding the clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale “ those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition. Clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and judged by a panel of volunteer CAMRA members throughout the year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYBY - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8DH - What's the story?
Most serious drinking pubs in Liverpool have a bit of heritage about them: they are fixtures as familiar as street lamps and go back decades. Somewhat surprisingly, this is not so with The Dispensary. It sprang up just a decade ago from the shell of an old man's boozer, The Grapes, on the corner of Rapid Hardware Street and Oldham Street in an area that is quietly renowned as a real booze and curry lovers' jackpot.
Pharmaceutical items, fixtures and fittings from old chemist shops, Liverpool University and the Liverpool Pharmaceutical Society abound in an effort to give it a traditional pub atmosphere and visually evoke a Victorian dispensary. It certainly did the trick for real-ale lovers CAMRA who voted it English Heritage pub refurbishment of the year 2000 and also Merseyside pub of the year.
Cains tenants Pauline Keady-Williams and husband Dave run The Dispensary, prescribing a cure-all for the world's ills in the shape of medicine on tap from the Upper Stanhope Street brewery, this week finding itself in dire financial straits with administrators being called in this week.
Why go there?
It serves arguably the best beer in town, if they do say so themselves, although Dominic Hornsby, from the nearby Fly In The Loaf, would doubtless disagree.
Who goes there?
The Dispensary's main allure seems to be for chaps, in there to either marvel at their chosen pint in solitude (I come here to hide from the wife, one un-pictured punter told us) or to philosophise in small huddles about the state of the world, occasionally all pausing to marvel at that pint again.
Most people wouldn't expect to cop off in here (the only thing being pulled is the beer) and it's not the most obvious venue for a first or any subsequent date

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ523 - An editorial style photograph showing two wooden beer tasting paddles laid on an outdoor picnic bench, each carrying three small glasses of real ale, creating a six-beer tasting flight in a pub garden or brewery setting. The image captures the growing culture of beer sampling, craft beer discovery and real ale appreciation, with each paddle holding one-third pint measures that allow drinkers to compare colour, clarity, head retention and style before choosing a full pint. Visible handwritten labels on the wood identify beers including Acorn, Abbey, Holy and Onyx, adding authenticity and a sense of local pub or microbrewery character. The beers range from pale golden ale to darker stout or porter tones, making the photograph useful for themes linked to tasting boards, beer flights, cask ale, craft brewing, pub food and drink, hospitality, leisure and British drinking culture. This is a strong commercial and editorial image for articles about CAMRA-style ale appreciation, brewery taprooms, pub experiences, beer tourism, social drinking, outdoor hospitality and the presentation of drinks in attractive wooden serving paddles. The overhead viewpoint gives a clean, graphic composition, with the warm tones of the timber paddles and table contrasting against the cream and tan beer heads. Relevant search phrases include beer paddle, ale sampler, tasting flight, beer flight board, one third pint, craft ale selection, pub garden drinks, real ale tasting, brewery bar service, cask beer sampler, traditional ale, British pub culture, draught beer presentation, beer comparison, weekend leisure, summer drinking and independent brewery branding. The image also works well as a visual metaphor for consumer choice, variety, trial before purchase and the premiumisation of beer in pubs and bars, where tasting serves and curated paddle boards encourage experimentation with different brews and styles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JB87DB - A close-up editorial photograph of a traditional British cask ale handpump clip advertising Platinum Jubilee, a 4.5% ABV beer from Facer's Brewery, displayed on a polished brass beer engine inside a pub bar. The design features a cartoon-style portrait of Queen Elizabeth II against a bold Union Jack background, linking the beer branding directly to the national celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee marking seventy years of the late Queen's reign. This image captures several highly marketable themes at once: real ale culture, British brewing, royal memorabilia, monarchy, patriotic branding, pub interiors, hand-pulled cask beer, and commemorative products created for major state occasions. The composition also conveys the atmosphere of a working bar, with bottles, shelving and soft interior lighting fading into the background, helping place the viewer firmly inside an authentic UK licensed premises rather than a studio setting. Useful editorial, commercial and cultural search terms connected with this scene include British pub, pump clip, beer badge, ale branding, cask-conditioned beer, draught ale, hospitality trade, licensed bar, traditional pub culture, celebratory beer, souvenir design, royal celebration, United Kingdom identity, national occasion, beverage marketing, local brewery promotion, and consumer nostalgia. The image would suit stories or features about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, themed products, the drinks industry, independent breweries, pub merchandising, British tourism, and the enduring link between monarchy, patriotism and the pub trade in Britain. It also works as a documentary illustration of how breweries and pubs responded to major public events with limited-edition beers, special branding and eye-catching point-of-sale artwork designed to attract drinkers at the bar. The strong red, white and blue palette against the warm brass handpump reinforces classic pub aesthetics and instantly signals Britishness.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7P7E - Sitting on an island of land between Chepstow Street and Bridgewater Street this tile clad Victorian pub certainly stands out from its surroundings. The building dates back to the early 19th Century but the cladding was added in 1900. The name is said to commemorate a horse-drawn stagecoach that ran between Manchester and London. Ironically though, the pub, by the same name in Derbyshire, claims that its name came from a book of the same name by Sir. Walter Scott that references Peveril Castle near Castleton in Derbyshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PC6 - The Briton's Protection is a historic, Grade II listed public house in Manchester, England. Various dates are given for its establishment
the pub's own website says 1806, although its bicentenary was not celebrated until 2011. In any case, it was listed in Pigot and Dean's New Directory of Manchester & Salford for 1821 and 1822.
The pub's name recalls its use as an army recruiting venue. A set of murals inside the pub commemorates the Peterloo Massacre.
The brick building, with a slate roof, was granted Grade II listed status, offering protection from unauthorised alteration or demolition, in 1990. The largely intact 1930s interior has six public rooms. Other notable architectural features include a terrazzo-tiled corridor floor, moulded ceiling, original 1930s urinals and the serving hatch through which people in the two rear rooms are served beer from the front bar.
As well as serving real ale, it is known for offering over 360 whiskies.
For many years, the pub was operated as a Tetley house, then by Punch Taverns, before being taken over in 2014 by an independent operator and refurbished. The pub was voted Best Pub in Manchester in the Pride of Manchester Awards in both 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGP32P - The Partridge opened its doors in May 2017 following an extensive refurbishment to develop an authentic country pub, complete with 10 beautiful en-suite bedrooms. Nestled in the countryside, yet adjacent to junction 10 of the M56 and the A49 and 3 miles from the M6, The Partridge is the ideal location for exploring Manchester, Liverpool and Chester or as a stopover on your journey from North to South, or East to West.
Originally called Walls Pit House, The Partridge dates back to 1791, borrowing its name from the man who built it, Mr Wall.
At the front of the property lay a large pit, which was caused by the excavation of puddling clay, used to line the wells. The pit, which has long since been filled in, had a variety of uses including potato washing in the summer and ice skating in the winter months.
According to the 1841 census, Walls Pit House was occupied by four unmarried siblings
George, Peter and their sisters Ann and Mary Whitley. By 1880, their nephew Charles Thomas Whitley, an architect and good university friend of Charles Darwin, was a frequent visitor of the property and an inscription by him relating to Darwin, can still be seen on one of the original oak beams in the bar.
More recently, the building was converted into a public house named The Hollow Tree before the latest chapter in the building's history saw it being transformed into a traditional inn, and renamed The Partridge, after its countryside surroundings and the birds that are regularly spotted in the local area.

This beer is a collaboration with the anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate. This creates a classic pale ale with a lot of body and citrus flavours
Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods “ Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal PoitÃn would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Our Beers are in pubs all over the UK and we've recently launched our online shop and new Taproom in London Fields. Come and join us for a pint!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ6KE - The Black Friar Pub. Post-1903 work by Herbert Fuller-Clark (b.1869, d. after 1912). Original building 1875. Remodelled in several stages beginning 1903, 1914, and 1925. 174 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4. Individual sculptures by Nathaniel Hitch, Frederick Callcott, Henry Poole, and Farmer and Brindley. According to Philip Ward-Jackson,
Hitch was responsible for the stonework grotesques on the exterior, and for a considerable amount of similar work in wood in the interior. Callcott created the pattern for the larger copper relief scenes, representing the day to day activities of the friars. . . . It seems probable that Callcott went on working on those reliefs until shortly before his death in 1925, when the rather more prestigious Henry Poole took over, to produce the relief work in the Small Saloon Bar. One of Callcott's frieze-like panels, entitled Saturday Afternoon, was to be repeated on the screen wall, separating the Luncheon Bar from the Small Saloon Bar, although it looks quite different in its new form, because the figures are much more widely spaced out, and the coloured marbles in the second rendering give it more depth.
Of these artists, Hitch (1841-1935), deserves to be better known. Following an apprenticeship to Farmer and Brindley, he had a very long and distinguished career as a sculptor: his work can be found at Cardiff Castle, suggesting that he was probably a member of William Burges's workforce there, and also in many churches and cathedrals including Truro Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He was particularly associated with the architects W. D. Caröe and J. L. Pearson.
It is worth noting that the popular London Encyclopaedia disagrees about the dates and artists involved here, stating simply that the building was erected in 1875, the ground floor being remodelled in 1905 by H. Fuller Clark. The outside is covered with mosaics and carved figures by Henry Poole (1903).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYMC - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a £400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of £500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. It's a veritable museum with photographs of the station in it's heyday, railway and other memorabilia. See http://www.stalybridgebuffetbar.co.uk/ to read more about the Buffet Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4HB - Close-up editorial image inside The Albion, a traditional real-ale pub on Park Street in Chester, showing a humorous blackboard drinks sign mocking lager culture from a cask-ale point of view. The chalked message advertises this week's lager with the deliberately crude punchline I can't believe it's not piss!! , using pub humour, beer snobbery and blunt northern wit to suggest that mass-produced lager lacks the flavour, character and authenticity of real ale. The scene captures the long-running cultural divide in British pubs between hand-pulled cask beer and colder, more industrial lager brands, with the joke implying that lager is so bland it may as well have been recycled from the toilets. The image is rich in pub atmosphere, with warm timber, traditional signage and a shallow depth of field that throws the background poster out of focus while keeping the joke board sharp. Useful themes include real ale, cask ale, CAMRA culture, pub banter, landlord humour, beer marketing, anti-lager sentiment, traditional pub interiors, humorous notices, chalkboard sign, British drinking culture, Chester pubs, Cheshire tourism, independent pubs, heritage hospitality, eccentric bar display, and consumer attitudes to taste and quality in beer. It works as a documentary photograph of pub culture, ale-house identity, and the performative rivalry between lager drinkers and cask-ale loyalists in England. The board also reflects the kind of knowingly exaggerated sarcasm often found in long-established free houses, where personality, conversation, and local character are part of the product as much as the drink itself. For picture researchers, editors and travel writers, the frame offers strong keywords around pub signs, beer jokes, UK leisure, food and drink tourism, old-school boozers, local humour, hand-written messages, and authentic Chester interiors rather than polished chain-pub branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

There's nowhere for miles around where you can find such welcoming staff serving up our great quality menu of British classics accompanied by the finest beer and wine.
Managed by Hans Arthur and George Carruthers, Kristina Swanton, the Orange Tree prides itself on being a unique historic landmark among Richmond's public houses. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE73P - Inside The famous Anchor Tap
Situated on the south side of the Thames in the Tower Bridge Conservation Area, this historic Southwark pub offers a truly traditional English experience. From the fish and chip suppers served, to the string of clearly designated separate rooms, upright piano, games room and open fire this pub effortlessly captures old-fashioned England.
Within the dark, oak walls of this late 18th century, former dock-workers pub, one of the most quintessentially English inventions took seed. Dr Samuel Johnson compiled his English dictionary in a special room inside The Anchor Tap. Originally a place for brewery employees to sample the fruits of their labour, a Tap Room was traditionally set up near its parent brewery.
The Anchor Tap was the first such establishment set up by British brewing legends, John Courage, and was located in close proximity to the former Anchor Brewery and the old Hop Exchange on Borough High Street. The Anchor Tap is an unpretentious, wharfside treasure offering a simple taste of a bygone English age.

Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H366N4 - This documentary stock photograph shows Pulling a handpull pint in a Yorkshire pub, with empty glasses, England, UK. The subject is rooted in Shipley, Yorkshire and is useful for editorial stories about Yorkshire pub culture, real ale, hand-pulled beer, traditional games and the social life of local pubs. The visible detail and caption make it more valuable than a generic bar or drink image, because it shows a real venue, real pub behaviour or a specific building connected with local social life. British pubs remain important as places to meet, eat, drink, watch sport, play traditional games and maintain informal community networks, while at the same time facing pressure from energy costs, staffing, changing drinking habits, business rates, rent, supermarket alcohol and the shift towards food-led trade. This image can support articles about real ale, hand pumps, cellar-to-bar service, drinkers, pub games such as dominoes, historic pub interiors, public house survival, tourism, hospitality employment, licensing, town-centre economies and the role of pubs in working-class and city life. It can also work for features on CAMRA, beer heritage, cask ale quality, independent pubs, after-work drinkers, railway-station pubs, local economies and nostalgia for sociable, unpretentious public houses. Search-friendly composite terms include traditional British pub culture, real ale handpull pint, Yorkshire pub games, London historic pub, pub hospitality industry, community local, cask beer service, licensed premises and UK evening economy. The documentary approach gives editors a credible image for news, magazine, web, tourism, food and drink, business, leisure, heritage and social commentary use. Where people or hands are visible, the photograph can also suggest the tactile, social side of pubs, including ordering, serving, chatting, playing and lingering rather than simply consuming a product.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18AW - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan.

'The Bottle' is a song by American soul artist Gil Scott-Heron and musician Brian Jackson, released in 1974 on Strata-East Records in the United States.
The song was issued as the first and only single for Scott-Heron's and Jackson's album Winter in America (1974). It became an underground and cult hit upon its release, and the single peaked at number 15 on the R&
B Singles Chart. Cited by music critics as the album's best recording, the commercial success of 'The Bottle' helped lead to Jackson's and Scott-Heron's next recording contract with Arista Records. Similar to other compositions by Scott-Heron, the song has been sampled extensively by hip hop artists.
If GSH is new to you, checkout the compilation disk 'The Best Of Gil Scott-Heron' and discover one of souls secrets.
------------------------
The Liverpool Cains brewery was founded by Irish immigrant Robert Cain in 1858 when he was able to buy an established brewery. Cain had begun his brewing career aged 24 when he purchased a pub and brewed his own ales.
Within 25 years of founding his brewery, Cain had established 200 pubs, including The Philharmonic Dining Rooms, The Vines and the Central Commercial Hotel, which are currently listed as being of architectural merit. His personal mansion had each window arch inscribed with his monogram. In 1887 construction began on a second brewery.
In 1921, 14 years after Cain's death, the Cains brewery merged with Walkers of Warrington becoming Walker Cains. Then in 1923 the original Stanhope Street Brewery was sold to Higsons, who continued to brew Cains ales.
In 1985, Higsons was bought by Boddingtons of Manchester. Five years later Boddingtons opted to concentrate on pub ownership and sold all its breweries to Whitbread, at which point the Stanhope Street site was closed.
Since that time, the site has been re-opened by Danes, rescued by the Asian Dusanj brothers and neared administration again. Today it still brews a nice range of real ales and lager. The Brewery Tap (or The Grapes Inn as was), pictured here is an interesting place for a few pints of Cains or Cains. It is about a 15min walk from Liverpool Lime street.
Cains was the official beer of Liverpool's 2008 European Capital of Culture celebrations. For a full story of the Cains history checkout 'Chris Routledge's fine tome 'The Story of Liverpool in a Pint'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4529292058 - 'Ah! a relaxing and very civilised Easter bank holiday monday afternoon with my friend Stephen in the Cafe Royal, tucked away in West Register Street, Edinburgh. Nice to be served real cask ales and great food.
It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

Gunn is an oak-aged Scottish beer which is brewed and bottled under contract by Belhaven for Innis and Gunn. Belhaven which has a history going right back to 1719. In November 2005 it became a part of the Suffolk Bury St Edmunds based brewery Greene King. Outwardly Belhaven appears to have retained its brands and 'scottishness'.
The Innis &
Gunn Original beer is brewed in Dunbar, East Lothian before being matured in American white oak Bourbon barrels for 30 days and is then a further 47 days an a marrying tun. It is matured for upto 71 days in total. The various styles contain up to 6.6% alcohol by volume and are generally supplied in distinctive bottles. IPA (India Pale Ale matured 55 days), Triple Matured (darker at 99 days), Original (77 days) and Canadian Day Cask, packaged in an ambitious red box (like a malt whisky - 71 days).
They are all very good ales and very enjoyable. I had a couple and this is all that remains.

The nearby Wiltshire Three Castles Brewery make an excellent nutty 4.2% bitter called Uffington Castle and this was on at the Star and Mike is holding its pump here with his left hand.
Dawn and Mike have recently moved in and not yet seen spring or summer in the village. Theres a mixture of homecooked food and locals can pre-order and pop in with a plate to take it away if they want. Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a large town straddling the River Trent in the east of Staffordshire, England. Its associated adjective is 'Burtonian'.
Burton is best known for its brewing heritage, home to over a dozen breweries in its heyday. It originally grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of St. Modwen, and had grown into a busy market town by the early modern period. While Burton's great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 16th century it served as 'a comen passage to and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng people', according to the abbot. The town, which had an estimated population of 64,449 (2001 Census), lies within the National Forest.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, England is situated on the junction of Hope Street and Hardman Street, diagonally opposite the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. It appears in numerous CAMRA guides.
I have always referred to as the Philharmonic Pub or simply the Phil. It was originally designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the brewers Robert Cain &
Company and opened in 1898. The exterior is in the Art Nouveau style.
The interior has dark wood-panelled walls with copper reliefs, Art Deco lighting and mosaic floor and bar. The main bar is highly decorated with glass grapes and a nearly life-sized golden eagle. As well as the main bar area, the pub also has the spacious Grande Lounge at the rear of the building, and two smaller drinking snugs named Brahms and Liszt. The Grande Lounge has just been restored to the way it was meant to be when the pub was first opened. The current dining room is located on the first floor.
The men's toilets are famous for their original, ornate marble urinals, Women are permitted to visit as part of organised tours. The building is a Grade II listed.
I had a few nice pints here a while ago when I spent a few years working at Littlewoods in Liverpool. I always try to drop in now whenever I have the chance :-)

Wikipedia describes dominos thus:
In the area of mathematical tilings and polyominoes, the word domino often refers to any rectangle formed from joining two congruent squares edge to edge. The traditional Sino-European domino set consists of 28 dominoes, colloquially nicknamed bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called pips) or is blank. The backs of the dominoes in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. A domino set is a generic gaming device, similar to playing cards or dice, in that a variety of games can be played with a set.
The oldest domino sets have been dated from around 1120 A.D. Modern dominoes, as most of the Western world knows them, however, appear to be a Chinese invention. They were apparently derived from cubic dice, which had been introduced into China from India some time in the distant past. Each domino originally represented one of the 21 results of throwing two dice. One half of each domino is set with the pips from one die and the other half contains the pips from the second die. Chinese sets also introduce duplicates of some throws and divide the dominoes into two classes: military and civil. Chinese dominoes are also longer than typical European dominoes. Over time Chinese dominoes also evolved into the tile set used to play Mah Jong, a game which swept across the United States in the early to mid 1920s and has enjoyed moderate popularity, especially in its 'solitaire' form, since that time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H9PM2T - The Horse Shoe Bar, Glasgow, Scotland has the strength of a real-world scene: ordinary enough to be believable, but specific enough to support precise editorial use. The Horse Shoe Bar is one of Glasgow's classic city-centre pubs, associated with a long bar, traditional drinking culture and the social habits of a busy Scottish commercial centre. The subject can illustrate pub heritage, urban hospitality, after-work drinking, tourism, Scottish identity, licensed trade pressures and the endurance of landmark bars in changing retail streets. The location detail, Glasgow, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include traditional pub, public house, beer culture and real ale, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It can work both as a straightforward location record and as a wider editorial illustration of the habits, services, buildings, symbols and small commercial details that shape everyday life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE6YR - Outside the Anchor Tap

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEB - Step back in time & visit one of the very few remaining Victorian station buffet bars.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEE - Photo shows Transpennine train carriage at platform, Warrington Central station, Cheshire,England UK. The image can support editorial features on public transport, commuting, passenger information, ticketing, rail and bus infrastructure, regional connectivity, station environments and sustainable travel. Transport images like this are especially useful where operator branding, vehicle type, platform or street context is visible, because they locate policy themes in a real everyday setting rather than an abstract transport graphic. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Lighting, passenger density and weather should be checked from the image, but the subject is clearly a live transport or travel setting. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4MNA - Greyfriars Bobby's Bar occupies the ground floor of a row of Georgian houses adjoining the historic Candlemakers' Hall, built in 1722.
The name of the bar is inspired by an Edinburgh legend of a scruffy Skye terrier called Bobby. When his owner died in 1858, Bobby faithfully watched over his grave and was buried alongside his master in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1872.
