Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E26WH7 - Large-scale mural by Nomad Clan on the side of the Tempest Building on Tithebarn Street in Liverpool city centre, Merseyside, England. Commissioned by Capital & Centric and completed in 2015, the artwork covers the side elevation of the refurbished commercial building and has become one of the best-known pieces of public street art in central Liverpool. The mural depicts a striking female nomadic figure surrounded by symbolic imagery including bees, a bird, flowers, bright geometric forms and layered decorative elements, creating a rich and visually complex composition that rewards close viewing. The bees reference the beehives installed on the Tempest Building roof, linking the painting directly to the building and adding an environmental detail to the work. The image is highly useful for themes such as public art, mural culture, urban regeneration, placemaking, city branding, cultural tourism, visual identity, women in art and the creative transformation of blank city walls into memorable landmarks. It also works strongly for searches around Liverpool street art, Nomad Clan, Tempest Building, Tithebarn Street, Merseyside culture, large-scale mural painting, contemporary public art and the changing appearance of Liverpool's commercial district. The dramatic vertical format, painterly style and highly visible city centre setting make the mural an important piece of outdoor art in northern England, suitable for editorial, documentary and travel features about modern Liverpool, urban creativity, architecture, tourism and the role of public art in shaping sense of place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMWGM2 - Close-up editorial image inside The Albion, a traditional real-ale pub on Park Street in Chester, showing a humorous blackboard drinks sign mocking lager culture from a cask-ale point of view. The chalked message advertises this week's lager with the deliberately crude punchline I can't believe it's not piss!!, using pub humour, beer snobbery and blunt northern wit to suggest that mass-produced lager lacks the flavour, character and authenticity of real ale. The scene captures the long-running cultural divide in British pubs between hand-pulled cask beer and colder, more industrial lager brands, with the joke implying that lager is so bland it may as well have been recycled from the toilets. The image is rich in pub atmosphere, with warm timber, traditional signage and a shallow depth of field that throws the background poster out of focus while keeping the joke board sharp. Useful themes include real ale, cask ale, CAMRA culture, pub banter, landlord humour, beer marketing, anti-lager sentiment, traditional pub interiors, humorous notices, chalkboard sign, British drinking culture, Chester pubs, Cheshire tourism, independent pubs, heritage hospitality, eccentric bar display, and consumer attitudes to taste and quality in beer. It works as a documentary photograph of pub culture, ale-house identity, and the performative rivalry between lager drinkers and cask-ale loyalists in England. The board also reflects the kind of knowingly exaggerated sarcasm often found in long-established free houses, where personality, conversation, and local character are part of the product as much as the drink itself. For picture researchers, editors and travel writers, the frame offers strong keywords around pub signs, beer jokes, UK leisure, food and drink tourism, old-school boozers, local humour, hand-written messages, and authentic Chester interiors rather than polished chain-pub branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DA8AKJ - The Bear at Marlborough at dusk , Wiltshire , England , UK SN8 1LZ
Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4107135884 - 'In the year 920 (or was it 923) King Edward the Elder founded a cyty here and called it Thelwall. Written on the Pickering Arms is that inscription.
Still reassuringly serving nice food and ale at the bottom of Bell lane. Or it was today anyway.
Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEB - Step back in time & visit one of the very few remaining Victorian station buffet bars.
Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. It's a veritable museum with photographs of the station in it's heyday, railway and other memorabilia. See http://www.stalybridgebuffetbar.co.uk/ to read more about the Buffet Bar.
