Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGPHAA - The library is located in several adjoining historic buildings on William Brown Street. Its first building was the William Brown Library and Museum building which was completed in 1860 to the designs of John Weightman Surveyor to Liverpool Corporation, (not to be confused with his near contemporary John Grey Weightman)[1] and which it has always shared with the city's museum, now known as World Museum Liverpool. The library was then extended further to the right with the addition in 1879 of the Picton Reading Room and to the rear with the Hornby Library in 1906. All three of these are Grade II* listed buildings and are built in a classical style similar to other buildings on the street.

Previous to the creation of this public library was England's first subscription library (1758-1942), latterly known as The Lyceum, Liverpool, but often referred to as the Liverpool Library.

Near field communication (NFC) is a set of ideas and technologies that enable smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less. Each full NFC device can work in 3 modes: NFC target (acting like a credential), NFC initiator (as a reader) and NFC peer to peer. Most of the first business models like advertisement tags or other industrial applications have not been successful, always overtaken by another technology (3D barcodes, UHF tags, ...)
The main advantage of NFC is that NFC devices are often cloud connected. Connected credentials can be provisioned over the air unlike a standard card (Hotel or visitor applications). All connected NFC enabled smartphones can be provisioned with dedicated apps, which gives any application hundreds of millions of potential dedicated readers in opposition of the traditional dedicated infrastructure of ticket, access control or payment readers. All NFC peers can connect a third party NFC device with a server for any action or reconfiguration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCH4 - Barter Books is a second-hand bookshop located in the historic English market town of Alnwick, Northumberland owned and run by Stuart and Mary Manley. It has over 200,000 visitors a year, 40% of whom are from outside the area, and is one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Europe.[1] It is considered a local tourist attraction and has been described as the British Library of second-hand bookshops.
The bookshop is located within the Victorian Alnwick railway station, designed by William Bell and opened in 1887. It was in use until the closure of the Alnwick branch line in 1968. Barter Books was opened in 1991.
The shop is notable for its use of a barter system, whereby customers can exchange their books for credit against future purchases. Standard cash purchases are also available.
Barter Books has also been subject to crime on occasions. On the 3rd May 2007, a local newspaper, the Northumberland Gazette, reported that a book worth over ?œ2,000 was returned to the book shop 5 years after it was stolen. It has also been subject to a scam which allowed thieves to take ?œ200 in cash. However, the crime was dealt with in court.

Barter Books hit the headlines in 2000 when the owner discovered, in a box of old books bought at an auction, an old World War II poster from 1939. The slogan, Keep Calm and Carry On, and the simple design has turned it into an international phenomenon, and has been on the walls of places as diverse as Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street and the US Embassy in Belgium
