Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG903B - Pigeon racing is the sport of releasing specially trained homing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance. The time it takes the animal to cover the specified distance is measured and the bird's rate of travel is calculated and compared with all of the other pigeons in the race to determine which animal returned at the highest speed.
Pigeon racing requires a specific breed of pigeon bred for the sport, the Racing Homer. Competing pigeons are specially trained and conditioned for races that vary in distance from approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). Despite these lengths, races can be won and lost by seconds, so many different timing and measuring devices have been developed. The traditional timing method involves rubber rings being placed into a specially designed clock, whereas a newer development uses RFID tags to record arrival time.
While there is no definite proof, there are compelling reasons to think the sport of racing pigeons may go back at least as far as 220 AD. Furthermore, it is recorded in the Mishnah that pigeon racers are forbidden from bearing witness. The sport achieved a great deal of popularity in Belgium in the mid-19th century. The pigeon fanciers of Belgium were so taken with the hobby that they began to develop pigeons specially cultivated for fast flight and long endurance called Voyageurs. From Belgium the modern version of the sport and the Voyageurs which the Flemish fanciers developed spread to most parts of the world. Once quite popular, the sport has experienced a downturn in participants in some parts of the world in recent years, possibly due to the rising cost of living, ageing fanciers, and a severe lack of public interest. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by pigeons is also a reason why some people are leaving the sport.
One recent development in the sport of pigeon racing is one loft racing, where birds are raced against each other under the same training

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXH1 - Banger racing is a tarmac, dirt, shale and chalk track type of motorsport event popular in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Vehicles are raced against one another, with the winner being the first to the checkered flag after a set number of laps. Contact to damage an opponent's car is permitted and encouraged within the formula, with cars progressively becoming more damaged throughout an event. Races are held at an oval or tri-oval circuits that are up to 1⁄4 mile (440 yd
400 m) long
however, on certain occasions, races are held in a figure of eight configurations. Banger racing is often confused with stock car racing, although there are differences between the two, despite often racing at the same tracks.
Banger racing vehicles are normally scrap or 'written-off' cars in varying states of disrepair. In modern bangers, there are different events held for different vehicle types.
The most common type are 'Unlimited' bangers, where cars racing have no set engine size limit. Despite the high running costs, this is usually one of the most competitive classes and is favoured by most drivers because of the high speeds and car strengths. Fans often regard the unlimited class as the sport's pinnacle, with many big championship races being raced to unlimited class specs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFTMG0 - Crash at the Silverstone British F1 Grand Prix 03/07/2022 at 1st corner
The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. Zhou Guanyu and George Russell both experienced poor starts and were passed by Nicholas Latifi. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left in an attempt to keep position. Subsequently, Gasly and Russell made contact and caused Russell to lose control and hit Zhou. The impact flipped Zhou's car and he skid across the track upside down. His car bounced over the tyre barrier, hit the protection fence and came to a rest between the fence and tyre barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, both of whom received damage but were able to return to the pits. However, Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car, he failed to turn the engine on and was forced to retire.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance where he was taken to the race medical centre. Albon was also taken to the race medical centre but was later transferred by helicopter to Coventry Hospital for observations. Both were later released

George Russell had a bad start and was passed by Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu pulled alongside him leaving a large gap between them. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air where he landed upside down skidding down the track, then skipped and bounced all the way across the very long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway barely slowing but turning sideways before the inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel just short of the tire barrier still carrying so much speed and momentum that it launched so high it just glanced off the top of the barrier as it flew over it, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstands before dropping 8 feet landing wedged into the small gap between the fence and tyre barrier where it stopped with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFW2KB - A dramatic on-track accident scene at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit in July 2022, Northamptonshire, England, as FIA race marshals and medical staff move in on a first-lap incident involving driver Zhou Guanyu. The image shows the immediate emergency response on the tarmac, with an emergency ambulance, medical response cars and support vehicles positioned close to the stopped Formula One car while officials, crew and marshals gather around the incident area. A packed covered grandstand is filled with spectators and racing fans watching through the safety fencing, capturing the scale of a live Grand Prix crowd scene during a high-profile motorsport emergency. Trackside advertising boards in red, including Lenovo branding, line the straight, while the modern pit building and hospitality structures rise behind the stands.
This editorial photograph highlights the operational reality of modern F1 safety procedures: rapid deployment by trained marshals in high-visibility kit, controlled access to the racing line, and coordinated medical attendance while the session is neutralised under safety car and incident management protocols. The presence of rescue personnel, response vehicles and circuit officials demonstrates the layered approach to risk management in elite racing, from track marshals to medical response and race control. Shot in bright British summer daylight under a partly cloudy sky, the scene contrasts the festival atmosphere of the British Grand Prix weekend with the calm, methodical work of emergency teams. It is a clear illustration of why motorsport safety, crash response planning, crowd control and circuit infrastructure are central to Formula 1, alongside speed, competition and sporting spectacle. The scene also suits keywords such as Zhou Guanyu crash, Alfa Romeo incident, British GP 2022, Formula One World Championship, emergency services, paramedics, grandstands, spectators and track safety at Silverstone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ43Y - The 1990's saw a number of major changes for Rock Oil including the move to the present purpose-built site on Priestley Street near to Warrington centre. During this time established lubricant firms were purchased and subsequently brought their business under the Rock Oil banner, these being A.E. Bennetts of Liverpool and Nickerson Lubricants of Halifax, both long standing independent lubricant blenders with their own specialised areas of business. These acquisitions and the new plant meant that Rock Oil was ready for the next phase in its history. Ted maintained a major involvement in the business until sadly he passed away in 2005.
In 2014 Charles stepped down as Managing Director after 25 years in the position and took up a new role as Chairman. Greg Hewitt became Managing Director and took over the reins with the company being the strongest it's ever been. Charles has been instrumental in driving the company to where it is today and led the company to a record turnover with sales in over 70 countries worldwide.
In 2017 saw the opening of a brand new Research & Development centre. This 10,000 square foot building houses one of the finest independent laboratories in the country and staff across technical, sales, marketing and senior management. With over a million pounds worth of technical equipment, the facility is at the cutting edge of the lubricants industry. This is the single biggest investment the business had ever made to ensure the Rock brand was able to match the ambition of its staff and support customers all over the globe.
Rock Oil is one of the few remaining blenders of lubricants still manufacturing in the UK and has worked with multiple British and World champions across various motorsport disciplines. Rock Oil is currently the official lubricant partner of the British Superbike Series which is the biggest domestic motorcycle race series in the world.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2B1YFYR - Tetbury is a small town and civil parish inside the Cotswold district in England. It lies on the site of an ancient hill fort, on which an Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded, probably by Ine of Wessex, in 681. The population of the parish was 5,250 in the 2001 census, increasing to 5,472 at the 2011 census.
During the Middle Ages, Tetbury became an important market for Cotswold wool and yarn. The Tetbury Woolsack Races, founded 1972, is an annual competition where participants must carry a 60-pound (27 kg) sack of wool up and down a steep hill (Gumstool Hill). The Tetbury Woolsack Races take place on the late May Bank Holiday, the last Monday in May each year.
Notable buildings in the town include the Church House, Market House, built in 1655 and the late-eighteenth century Gothic revival parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalene and much of the rest of the town centre, dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Market House is a fine example of a Cotswold pillared market house and is still in use as a meeting place and market. Other attractions include the Police Bygones Museum. Chavenage House, Highgrove House and Westonbirt Arboretum lie just outside the town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGECN - The City of Manchester Stadium in Manchester, England, currently known as the Etihad Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is the home Manchester City and with a domestic football capacity of 55,097, the fourth-largest in the Premier League and eighth-largest in the United Kingdom.
Built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium has since staged the 2008 UEFA Cup Final, England football internationals, rugby league matches, a boxing world title fight, the England rugby union team's last match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and summer music concerts during the football off-season.
The stadium, originally proposed as an athletics arena in Manchester's bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics, was converted after the 2002 Commonwealth Games from a 38,000 capacity arena to a 48,000 seat football stadium at a cost to the city council of £22 million and to Manchester City of £20 million. Manchester City F.C. agreed to lease the stadium from Manchester City Council and moved there from Maine Road in the summer of 2003.
The stadium was built by Laing Construction at a cost of £112 million and was designed and engineered by ArupSport, whose design incorporated a cable-stayed roof structure which is separated from the main stadium bowl and suspended entirely by twelve exterior masts and attached cables.[14] The stadium design has received much praise and many accolades, including an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004 for its innovative inclusive building design and a special award in 2003 from the Institution of Structural Engineers for its unique structural design.
In August 2015, a 7,000 seat third tier on the South Stand was completed, in time for the start of the 201516 football season. The expansion was designed to be in keeping with the existing roof design.

When measuring human diversity, a diversity index exemplifies the likelihood that two randomly selected residents have different ethnicities. If all residents are of the same ethnic group it's zero by definition. If half are from one group and half from another, it is .50. The diversity index does not take into account the willingness of individuals to cooperate with those of other ethnicities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D9MJM2 - Dragon Boat race from Peel press release at http://www.mediacityuk.co.uk/p/splashes-of-fun-at-first-peel-dragon-boat-event-at-mediacityuk
On a very damp day in Manchester, surveyors, solicitors, Peel employees and MediaCityUK occupiers including ITV, BBC, Nuffield Health and WYG turned out to race in three gripping head-to-head heats which culminated in an exciting grand finale.
Before the racing began, the guests were treated to a canapé reception in Damson MediaCityUK overlooking the piazza.
The weary but triumphant team from dock10, the studio operators, were presented with the glass trophy, medals and champagne and then celebrated with all the other participants and other participants at On the 7th, a private members bar located in the Blue Tower at MediaCityUK.
The losing team of local SMEs which included the Rugby Football League, Carbon Digital and Glue were presented with the wooden paddle award and a jovial hint to try harder next year.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the on-going activity at the vibrant MediaCityUK destination and all it offers, from offices to restaurants, retail and leisure in an impressive waterside location.
Liza Marco, Property Manager at Peel said, Peel's first Dragon Boat Racing Event at MediaCityUK was a huge success and it was a pleasure to see over 250 people take part in a fun, networking event which showcased MediaCityUK's amenities. We decided to hold an event at MediaCityUK following two successful Dragon Boat Events A Division of at Peel's Princes Dock development in Liverpool. We are looking forward to hosting the rematch next year!

Myles MacInnes (born 10 May 1978, Broadford, Isle of Skye, Scotland), is better known by the stage name Mylo, is a Scottish electronic musician and record producer.
He has provided remixes for Scissor Sisters ('Mary'), Amy Winehouse ('Fuck Me Pumps'), The Knife ('You Take My Breath Away') and The Killers ('Somebody Told Me'). One of his works was a 2004 remix of Kylie Minogue's no 2 UK hit, 'I Believe in You', which appeared on the single that peaked at no 3 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. His biggest chart success to date came in the autumn of 2005. This was when the single 'Doctor Pressure', a mash-up of his own song 'Drop The Pressure' and Miami Sound Machine's 'Dr. Beat', peaked at no 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The single performed well in the U.S., especially on the Hot Dance Airplay and Hot Dance Club Play charts, where it jointly made the Top 10.
'Muscle Car', the follow-up single to 'Doctor Pressure', was a hit in the UK and European dance charts, reaching no 1 on the UK Club Chart in November 2005, and no 38 in the UK Singles Chart. The video that accompanied the single courted controversy as it featured two supposed Chinese spies - actually played by British actors Bruce Wang and Alex Liang - inventing an electronic fly to spy on the American president, George W. Bush. Mylo did not appear in the video.
This is a green '57 Buick automobile and owner Dave Weatherby.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4610912265 - 'This is an interesting service I came across while at the Northwich Thundersprint this weekend. If I was a bike enthusiast I think I would like to make my final journey like this. A black motorcycle hearse. In recent times, the Motorcycle plus side-hearse has become more popular. This type of hearse is a motorcycle with a special side-vehicle built to carry a casket or an urn. These hearses are often used during the funeral of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.
Motorbikes have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance travelled when compared with cars. In 2004, figures from the UK Department for Transport indicated that motorcycles have 121 deaths or serious injuries per 100 million vehicle kilometers, compared to the corresponding figure of 2.6 for motorists. IE over 50 times more likely. This is due to the increased power and acceleration of bikes, but also size and ability of motorists to spot and make allowance for them.
This situation is helped by higher-visibility gear (not as sexy as the all-black leather iconic approach, but more practical), use of abrasion resistive gear and padding, Full face helmet (skidlid) with gloves and boots. All this gear on mopeds can look rather silly (although safe) and I remember in my first job a workmate being nicknamed 'Evil Kenevil' due to how bizarre this looked.
In the UK, for example, organizations such as the IAM and RoSPA offer advanced motorcycle rider training with the aim of reducing accident rates. There is often an added incentive to riders in the form of reduced insurance premiums.
A final quote from the Managing Director of www.MotorcycleFunerals.com Rev. Paul Sinclair. He believes we should reflect people's lifestyles in their funerals.
'No one submits a Catholic to a Muslim service or places a Liverpool fan in an Arsenal strip when they die so why should motorcycle enthusiasts be last seen in a car?'
Er.. Quite!

Here, a panorama from a section of the WilliamsF1 Grand Prix collection and facility near Wantage, Oxon (Oxfordshire) England UK.
The team was founded and run by Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head in 1977. Cars here cover the 1984 to 1991 seasons, mainly Honda/Judd era.
At the 1997 British Grand Prix, Canadian Jacques Villeneuve won the team's 100th race, making Williams one of only three teams in Formula One, alongside Ferrari and fellow British team McLaren achieve this.
I saw the team at the British Grand Prix in 1995 (Nigel Mansell / Keke Rosberg ) FW10B &
1997 (Nigel Mansell / Riccardo Patrese / Nelson Piquet) FW11B at Silverstone. The \u2018FW\u2019 represents the initials of team owner Frank Williams. At the 1995 GP Keke Rosberg did the first 160mph lap around the 'old' (and better!) Silverstone during qualifying. I must dig out some shots from those days. Carbon fibre composite technology had just started to be incorporated into the cars that year, with Williams finishing third in the constructors' championship. At Silverstone I watched Alain Prost in the McLaren-TAG take the race.
1987 brought the Williams Honda partnership its first and currently only drivers championship title from Nelson Piquet He scooped 76 points and won three races, while Mansell, was 15 points behind him in second place with six victories during the season. The team finished as constructors\u2019 champions for the second year running, scoring 137 points, 61 points ahead of their nearest rivals McLaren. Unfortunately Honda short sightedly ended their partnership with Williams at the end of the 1987 in favour of McLaren and Lotus. Fortunately, this year it was Mansell in the Williams I saw take the race.
