Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BBXPBB - Astley Green Colliery was a coal mine in Astley, Greater Manchester, then in the historic county of Lancashire, England. It was the last colliery to be sunk in Astley. Sinking commenced in 1908 by the Pilkington Colliery Company, a subsidiary of the Clifton and Kersley Coal Company, at the southern edge of the Manchester Coalfield, working the Middle Coal Measures where they dipped under the Permian age rocks under Chat Moss. The colliery was north of the Bridgewater Canal. In 1929 it became part of Manchester Collieries, and in 1947 was nationalised and integrated into the National Coal Board. It closed in 1970, and is now Astley Green Colliery Museum.
No 1 pit was sunk to 890 yards primarily to win coal from the Trencherbone mine and No 2 pit was 833 yards deep. The shaft was 23 feet in diameter. The Crombouke and Rams mines were intersected by the sinkings. Firedamp was a problem in the new workings and ventilation was a problem. The headgear of No.1 pit survives, it is made from wrought iron lattice girders with riveted plates at the joints and one small and two large wheels mounted at the top. It is nearly 30 metres (98 ft) high and was built by Head Wrightson of Stockton-on-Tees and completed by 1912. In 1912 a twin tandem compound 3300 horsepower winding engine built by Yates and Thom of Blackburn, the largest ever used on the Lancashire Coalfield, was installed at No 1 pit. The company built a smaller cross compound winding engine for No 2 pit, installed in 1919.
In 1923 the colliery employed 1524 men underground and 436 surface workers
which increased to 1631 underground and 492 surface workers by 1933. At Nationalisation in 1947 the colliery employed 1375 below and 561 above ground. The surface workers included women, known as pit brow lasses, who sorted coal on the screens. Women were employed at Astley Green until the mid-1950s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYW4 - A prominent tower block on the Walsall skyline is being stylishly transformed through design and technology to the tune of more than ?œ3million.
Innovative Midlands housing provider whg will make a bold design statement of dated Austin House while cutting residents' fuel bills and carbon footprint. Carbon savings for the project over 25 years are estimated at 2,340 tonnes while customers can expect to save around a third on energy bills.
The leading landlord is working in partnership with British Gas on the landmark project, which is part funded by the national Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP). A series of internal and external work will take place as part of the radical retrofit.
Chameleon boards that change colour depending on the time of day, view point and exposure to sunlight will be fitted down two aspects of the high rise block, which looms large on a hill in the Butts. As well as introducing colour and interest to the building, the boards will provide 406 square metres of insulation.
248 photo voltaic panels will be fixed to a south facing external wall to harness solar power and generate electricity for the communal lighting and lifts. Heat will be extracted from the ground and pumped into Austin House to power a new heating and hot water system. This will replace the inefficient electric storage heaters to give residents more control over the temperature of their flat and the water they use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJP10 - Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as giant hogweed, cartwheel-flower, giant cow parsnip,[4][5] hogsbane or giant cow parsley, is a plant in the family Apiaceae. In New Zealand, it is also sometimes called wild parsnip, or wild rhubarb. It typically grows to heights of 2 to 5.5 m (6 ft 7 in to 18 ft 1 in). Superficially, it resembles common hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Heracleum sosnowskyi, or garden angelica (Angelica archangelica). It is phototoxic and considered to be a noxious weed in many jurisdictions. Giant hogweed is native to the Caucasus region and Central Asia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, and it has also spread to many other parts of Europe, the United States, and Canada.
The sap of giant hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters and long-lasting scars. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9ACA - On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building status.
The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF4A - Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as giant hogweed, is a monocarpic perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the carrot family Apiaceae. H. mantegazzianum is also known as cartwheel-flower, giant cow parsley, giant cow parsnip, or hogsbane. In New Zealand, it is also sometimes called wild parsnip (not to be confused with Pastinaca sativa) or wild rhubarb.
Giant hogweed is native to the western Caucasus region of Eurasia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, and has also spread to other areas in Western Europe, the United States, and Canada. Its close relatives, Sosnowsky's hogweed and Persian hogweed, have similarly spread to other parts of Europe.
The sap of giant hogweed is phototoxic and causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters and scars. These serious reactions are due to the furanocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant. Consequently, it is considered to be a noxious weed in many jurisdictions

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0ME8 - Dusk night view of Housing developments, blocks of executive flats at Salford Quays, Manchester, North West England, UK.
Imperial Point was the first of the high-rise residential buildings on the Quays: a 16-storey tower built alongside the Lowry Outlet Mall on Pier 8 (Central Wharf) in 2001. Finished in sand-coloured cladding with grey and steel finishes to the roof, service cores and balconies, the lower levels are integrated into the mall.
Sovereign Point is the sister building of Imperial Point, towards the rear of the Lowry Outlet Mall. Completed in 2005, its 20 stories are residential, except for some commercial units at ground level, including Sovereign Food and Wine, the Quays' first grocery store. The tower's design was controversial and regarded as having a poor aesthetic on all but the water-facing elevation and is in stark relief to the neighbouring low-rise Winnipeg Quay.
The NV Buildings were designed by Broadway Maylan and completed between 2004 and 2005. The development consists of three 18-storey residential towers, each 180 feet (55 m) in height. Costing ?œ36 million, they stand in a line overlooking Huron Basin from the waterside of Pier 9 (North Wharf), their curved frontages are designed to represent sails. At night, the buildings are illuminated by green lights atop curved poles, and green flood light to either side. The Type 3 apartment in the NV Buildings won gold for Best Apartment in 2004 What House? awards.
The City Lofts construction began in 2005 and completed in late 2007. The development consists of two linked towers: one 9 stories, the other 19 stories. They are on land adjacent to the bund carrying the Quays road, which separates the Manchester Ship Canal from the cleaned water of the Salford Quays basins. The apartments' interior design was by Conran & Partners. Interest in the development was limited, due to the slump in the housing market, and in July 2008, City Lofts was forced to place all

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYKTFT - L?ngos is a typical Hungarian food. Today it is a deep fried flatbread, but in the past it was made of the last bits of the bread-dough and baked at the front of the brick or clay oven, to be served hot as the breakfast of the bread-baking day
The name comes from l?ng, the Hungarian word for flame.
Up to the mid 20th century, bread was baked once a week due to the cost of heating up the large oven and the lengthy process kneading up to 80 pounds of dough. Because the bread loaf, typical to Hungary, was 6 to 10 pounds each, traditionally they used to bake smaller (1-2 pounds) cip?? rolls for the evening and the next day. The name l?ngos (literally meaning flamed) comes from baking these flat breads in the morning while the oven was still heating up. L?ngos were also used as a side to lunch
The dough for l?ngos is made of water or milk, flour, yeast, and salt. The ingredients are worked together either by hand or a kneading machine. As the yeast starts to metabolize the carbohydrates in the flour, carbon dioxide is released which causes the dough to rise, creating the air bubbles in the l?ngos. The dough is basically the same as pizza dough, but it is not baked but fried in oil. Adding sour cream, yoghurt or mashed potatoes to the dough is optional but highly encouraged, in the latter case it is called potato l?ngos (in Hungarian krumplis l?ngos)
In the early 2000s, some people built small, portable clay ovens and started to sell oven baked l?ngos, called keny??rl?ngos (bread-l?ngos) on festivals and fairs. Although reminiscent of the traditional l?ngos, it is more like a pizza with sour cream, onions and bacon.
L?ngos is popular all year long. As it is a rather affordable and simple food, it is often sold around bus stations, fairs, local markets and all over Eastern European countries during local celebrations or sport events. It is sold at many fast-food restaurants not only in Hungary but also in Austria.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JHKB - Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts, in Derby Square, Liverpool, are operated by His Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service. The building is used by the Crown Court, the Magistrates' Court, Liverpool District Probate Registry and the Liverpool Youth Court
Until the mid-1980s, all Crown Court cases were heard in St George's Hall. However, as the number of court cases in Liverpool grew, it became necessary to commission a more modern courthouse for both criminal and civil matters: the site selected by the Lord Chancellor's Department had been occupied by Liverpool Castle between the 13th and 18th century.
The new building was commissioned by the now-defunct Property Services Agency, who were seeking a design which expressed authority and power.[6] Construction of the new building started in 1973. It was designed by Farmer and Dark[8] in the brutalist style, built with vertically ribbed pre-cast concrete panels in dark, reddish tones, and was opened in 1984.
Hearings of the Liverpool Magistrates Court, which had been held at the courthouse in Dale Street, transferred to the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in 2015.[10]
The design features towers on the north and south sides which were intended to echo Liverpool Castle. Pollard and Pevsner describe the architecture as hulking and dispiriting, but richly sculptural. The front facade of the building features a four metres wide version of the Royal coat of arms. Cast in concrete, it was designed by British sculptor Richard Kindersley. The interior, which accommodates 28 court rooms on 10 storeys, contains strips of brown ceramic tiles in strips between the staircase tower windows

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T267H7 - Our vision is to improve residents' lives and landlords' services through housing complaints.
All local authorities and registered social housing providers are required to be members of the Housing Ombudsman Scheme. We also have several private landlords and letting agents who have joined voluntarily.
The Housing Ombudsman Scheme sets out our role, what complaints we can consider and the obligations of our members.
We are an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The Framework Document sets out the respective responsibilities and accountability of the Housing Ombudsman, the Secretary of State and officials within the Department.
What we do
We investigate complaints and resolve disputes involving the tenants and leaseholders of social landlords (housing associations and local authorities), as well as for our voluntary members (private landlords and letting agents).
Investigating these complaints is a free, independent, and impartial service and this work is funded by annual landlord subscription fees.
We work with the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman (LGSCO) and the Regulator of Social Housing, under a memorandum of understanding, to agree a common approach to collaborative working. We have included the LGSCO and the regulator's Memorandum of Understanding documents if you'd like to know more.
Who we are
We are made up of three directorates:
Quality, Engagement and Development
Dispute Support & Resolution
Finance and Corporate Services
These teams are supported by our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Operational Leadership Team.
We collaborate with an Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (ARAC), an Advisory Board and an Independent Reviewer of Service Complaints to support our activities, encourage external perspectives and continually improve our performance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KA4R7D - The office of the Housing Ombudsman is an executive non-departmental public body of the government of the United Kingdom, sponsored by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The Housing Ombudsman Service looks at complaints about registered providers of social housing, for example housing associations, and other landlords, managers and agents. The service is free, independent and impartial. The Ombudsman can also look at complaints about the handling of housing issues by local councils.
In June 2018, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Excellence in the Built Environment called on the UK government to expand the remit of independent UK ombudsman schemes to cover private house-builders. It recommended a single entry point for ombudsman services spanning the entire residential sector, which would cover the conduct of estate agents (covered by The Property Ombudsman) through to social housing. Within this overarching service, there would be either a number of specialist ombudsmen or specialist divisions ? one of which would cover new homes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AP0 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.
