Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XH7 - This image shows the main entrance to Brick Lane Vintage Market, located just off Brick Lane in the Spitalfields area of East London. The open double doors are covered with bold purple signage reading London's Vintage Mecca and Vintage Market, directing visitors down into the indoor market space below.
The entrance design combines modern graphic branding with exposed brickwork, neon lighting, and directional arrows, reflecting the contemporary, curated nature of Brick Lane's vintage retail scene. The stairway leads down into a multi-level market housing a large number of independent traders and boutiques specialising in vintage clothing, retro fashion, and alternative styles.
Brick Lane has long been associated with counterculture, creativity, and independent retail, and the Vintage Market has become a popular destination for tourists and Londoners seeking sustainable fashion, unique garments, and distinctive street style. The emphasis on independent boutiques and design and craft highlights the market's positioning within the wider shift toward reuse, circular fashion, and small-scale retail.
Photographed indoors under artificial lighting, the image captures the threshold between street and market interior, symbolising Brick Lane's role as a gateway to London's alternative fashion culture. It is well suited to editorial use covering urban retail, vintage fashion, independent markets, London tourism, and the evolving character of East London shopping districts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PNRFC4 - Purplebricks is an online estate agent which operates in the UK. Founded in 2012 by Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd, it is backed by investors that include venture capital firm DN Capital as well as Neil Woodford, Paul Pindar, and Errol Damelin.
History
Early history
Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd conceived their idea for an online estate agency in 2012.Property sales in the United Kingdom had historically been handled by traditional (or high street) estate agencies
Purplebricks' commission-free, hybrid agency business model was intended to disrupt the UK residential property market, and marketing has been a central element of the company's business strategy.
In 2016, Purplebricks began using the tagline commisery, meaning the misery home sellers feel about paying commission, to distinguish itself from traditional real estate agencies. A full advertising campaign about the concept followed the next year, and ran extensively in the UK, US, and Australia. The campaign won an Effectiveness Award from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in 2018 for demonstrating proof on payback on marketing communications, as the campaign contributed to a 218 percent growth in revenue.
In 2019, Purplebricks was added to the Superbrands list, which tracks consumer perception of brand and marketing activity. Purplebricks' presence on the list was seen as an indication that the company had established itself as a household name. In 2020, Purplebricks claimed to have achieved 98 percent brand awareness within the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WXN - This image shows a brass fox door knocker mounted on a brightly painted purple door in the historic city of York. The sculpted fox head, complete with pointed ears and elongated form, reflects decorative metalwork traditions often found on period properties and characterful urban homes.
Animal-shaped door knockers have long been used in Britain as both functional objects and expressions of personality, status, or humour. Fox imagery in particular is associated with countryside symbolism, folklore, and English heritage, making it a popular decorative motif.
The surface of the brass shows natural wear and patina, suggesting age and regular use, while the bold purple paint provides a striking contemporary contrast to the traditional metalwork. Details like this contribute to York's reputation for visually rich streetscapes, where historic architecture and individual expression sit side by side.
Photographed close-up to emphasise texture, form, and colour, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British design details, heritage housing, architectural features, quirky street photography, and the character of historic English cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTWGJB - Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The various species are commonly referred to as elder, elderflower or elderberry. The genus was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified as Adoxaceae due to genetic and morphological comparisons to plants in the genus Adoxa.
Flowers of European black elder
Description
The oppositely arranged leaves are pinnate with 5?9 leaflets (or, rarely, 3 or 11). Each leaf is 5?30 cm (2?12 in) long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. They bear large clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers in late spring
these are followed by clusters of small black, blue-black, or red berries (rarely yellow or white).
Color
Structure of anthocyanins, the blue pigments in elderberries
Sambucus fruit is rich in anthocyanidins[3] that combine to give elderberry juice an intense blue-purple coloration that turns reddish on dilution with water. These pigments are used as colorants in various products, and elderberry juice color is listed by the US FDA as allowable in certified organic food products. In Japan, elderberry juice is listed as an approved natural color additive under the Food and Sanitation Law. Fibers can be dyed with elderberry juice (using alum as a mordant) to give a muted purple shade.
Toxicity
Although the cooked berries (pulp and skin) of most species of Sambucus are edible, the uncooked berries and other parts of plants from this genus are poisonous. Leaves, twigs, branches, seeds, roots, flowers, and berries of Sambucus plants produce cyanogenic glycosides, which have toxic properties.[10] Ingesting a sufficient quantity of cyanogenic glycosides from berry juice, flower tea, or beverages made from fresh leaves, branches, and fruit has been shown to cause illness, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and weakness. In August 1983, a group of 25 people in Monterey County, California, became ill after ingesting elderberry juice pressed f

Design Inspiration
It was at theManchesterMechanics' Institute in 1868 that the first meeting of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) took place in 1868. Fifty years later, in 1918, the Pankhurst's led a victory that was meant to mark the beginning of the end of a war for gender equality. Sylvia Pankhurst, a suffragette, imprisoned numerous times, came to see the struggle for women to have the vote as just one strand in a larger struggle for equality.
Manchester UNISON and UNISON North West
UNISON members work in many different roles in providing public services. It is the union for workers in sectors including local government, the NHS, the police service, education, utilities, transport and the voluntary sector. With 200,000 members it is the biggest union in the region and more than two-thirds of its members are women.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2205 - Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator. Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name Dodgem. They are also known as bumping cars, dodging cars and dashing cars. The first patent for bumper cars was filed in 1921
The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3CM - Its turned out nice again for the former Warrington home of legendary entertainer George Formby.
Hillcrest House, in Walton Road, Stockton Heath, where ukulele playing George once lived with his dad ? also an entertainer ? has been refurbished and has become a small business centre run by Warrington-based Purple Accounts.
The house was the Formby family home from 1917 and it was from there that George launched his show business career. It had a brief existence as a boutique hotel, which opened in 2013, when it was also recognised with a blue plaque.
Now it has been comprehensively and sympathetically refurbished by the owner but is still filled with iconic images of Formby, who was at one time credited with being the highest-paid star in UK show business.
There's even a replica of the No 14 motorbike that Formby rode in his 1939 movie No Limits based on the TT races in the Isle of Man ? where, coincidentally, the first Purple Accounts office opened in 2007.
The new small business centre based at George Formby's House was officially opened by Warrington South MP Andy Carter,
The Purple Accounts small business centre helps small businesses with compliance services such as accounts, tax, book-keeping and payroll
George Formby, OBE (born George Hoy Booth
26 May 1904 ? 6 March 1961) was an English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s. On stage, screen and record he sang light, comic songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele, and became the United Kingdom's highest-paid entertainer.
Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he was the son of George Formby Sr, from whom he later took his stage name. After an early career as a stable boy and jockey, Formby took to the music hall stage after the early death of his father in 1921
The media historian Brian McFarlane writes that on film, Formby portrayed gormless Lancastrian innocents who would win through against some form of villainy, gain

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00B3 - By the middle of the 15th century the population of the town had increased to about 1,300 people and, even though travelling was hard, Warrington's markets and fairs were known far and near. The lanes around the market became so crowded with stalls and animals that an open space had to be made in the north west corner of the crossroads. On early maps this was called the ?forum', and later the ?corn market'.
The rights to collect tolls on these markets and fairs remained with the barons of Warrington, and later with the lords of the manor, until 1856 when the new corporation bought them from John Ireland Blackburne, the then Lord of the Manor.
The Victorian market
Three years later the Warrington Improvement and Market Act said the corporation could hold and maintain a market, and could also to build on any land purchased under the powers of the Act, or on any land forming part of any street. The buildings were market houses and places for the sale of cattle, hay and other articles.
After much debate a new market hall for meat traders was built in 1856, which was an impressive brick and stone building.
It was extended in 1873, adding a cast iron-framed fish market hall. Later, a glass-roofed general market hall was built on land behind the Barley Mow Inn.
The market in the 1960s-1970s
By the late 1960s, the Victorian market halls had become outdated and they couldn't meet the modern standards of health and hygiene. It was impossible to build a new market around the old without stopping trading for a long time.
When Warrington became a New Town, the town centre was redeveloped and the market was moved to Bank Street, where it would provide a counterbalance to the new Golden Square shopping centre.
The new market was designed on three levels, based on the natural fall of the ground, meaning that each floor came out at ground level. It gave service access to the back of shops on Bridge Street via a tunnel from the basement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02ND - On World Polio Day, 24th October, thousands of Rotary clubs around the world will hold events and fundraisers to recognize the progress in the global fight to end polio.
Warrington Rotary, as part of its Purple for Polio campaign, and with the support of Warrington Borough Council, intend to mark the occasion by lighting the town hall purple
In 1985, Rotary launched the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Since the first project to vaccinate children polio has been eradicated by 99.9%. Although there is no cure for polio it can be prevented with a vaccine.
Rotary has been joining forces with associations such as the World Health Organization in a battle to reach the remaining endemic countries- Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Unless polio is eradicated everywhere, within ten years we could see as many as 200,000 new cases annually.
World Polio Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the devastating effects of polio and why Rotary clubs work together to eradicate it from the world.
The first effective attempt to fight polio was made by Jonas Salk in 1955. He and his team created an inactivate vaccine. To honour his work, Rotary International named October 24th as World Polio Day.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFP0MH - West Midlands Trains (WMT) is a train operating company in the United Kingdom. It operates passenger trains on the West Midlands franchise between London and the English Midlands under two trade names: West Midlands Railway (within the West Midlands region) and London Northwestern Railway (LNR) (outside the West Midlands region).
It is owned by a consortium of three companies: Abellio, JR East and Mitsui Group.
In April 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the shortlist of bidders for the West Midlands franchise, comprising the incumbent operator Govia, MTR Corporation, and West Midlands Trains: a consortium of Abellio (70%), JR East (15%) and Mitsui (15%). In July 2016, MTR Corporation withdrew from the bidding process.
The invitation to tender was issued in August 2016. In August 2017, the West Midlands Trains consortium was awarded the franchise. It took over from London Midland on 10 December 2017. The franchise is scheduled to run until March 2026
Unlike the previous London Midland franchise, which was solely accountable to the DfT, West Midlands will also be accountable for services that operate wholly within the West Midlands region to West Midlands Rail Executive, a group of 16 local authorities. However, the DfT will still need to approve any changes West Midlands Rail wish to make until the franchise is relet, by which time West Midlands Rail will award the future franchise for services wholly within the West Midlands region.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2N - The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000?8,000 years ago in the Near East. Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the discovery of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia. The oldest known winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC.
By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.
In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the genus Vitis proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF00F - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and are up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast
the Catholic Short Strand from the Protestant Cluan Place areas of East Belfast
and the Protestant Fountain estate and Catholic Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed. While, on 1 September 2011, Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls, a study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E7F - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Are you a fan of Wildian campishness? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. If you can't catch any Oscar Wilde here, then we are in trouble...
As the blurb says:
An impertinent epilogue to 'The Importance Of Being Earnest' by Robin Johnson (the writer of Stitched Up).
'There are certain rules for surviving a drawing-room farce. Look over your plans for the next few days. If they are harebrained, reconsider. If a case of humourous mistaken identity arises, politely correct it before it gets out of hand. Resist the temptation to entrust any crucial task to a comic buffoon. Avoid the company of country vicars, austere aunts, village policemen and crossdressers. Do not pretend that a living person is dead or vice versa.'

What a super cross-dressing chap!
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

'Purple Haze' is a song written in 1966 and recorded in 1967 by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and released as a single (Hendrix's second) in both the United Kingdom and the United States. It appeared on their 1967 album Are You Experienced. 'Purple Haze' has become one of the 'archetypical psychedelic drug songs of the sixties'.
Reportedly, the song came into being after the band's producer Chas Chandler heard him playing the riff backstage and suggested that he write lyrics to go with it. There is some dispute about the lyrics: supposedly written in the dressing room of the Upper Cut Club on Boxing Day, 1966, it is also believed that he wrote the lyrics in Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill.
Chandler claims that the lyrics were never cut in any way (though he admits that this was done on general principle with Hendrix's lyrics), while Hendrix stated that the original song contained much more text. Hendrix himself denied the drug relation of the song claiming it to be merely another love song.
He said that the line 'What ever it is, that girl put a spell on me' is the key line to the lyrics.
The woods around Grappenhall are becoming a bit purple hazy, as spring pokes its crocus flowers through the frozen ground. The snow drops are out too, grab 'em while they are here, when they gone, they gone!

It happens every year I know, but it always impresses me how nature awakens after those 'Jacks in the green' have done their work over the winter. And, this track says it all to me.
Its from one of my favourite bands BRMC and an album that has most tracks as my 4 &
5 star ratings on my ipod.
The band are named after Marlon Brando's motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One and are from San Francisco, California, now based in Los Angeles, USA.
Its easy to hear their influences from Led Zeppelin, the BJM, The Stones and The Jesus and Mary Chain in their music.
Early albums were in a very rock vein, with 'Howl' showing a move to a more blues/folk style.
The first album is the best starting point for newcomers to the band. The live DVD recorded in Glasgow, Berlin, and Dublin during the Baby 81 world tour is also worth grabbing.
Oh, and tell 'em I sent you!

A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580.
The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847–49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. Much damage had been done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank.
It is particularly good in spring when all the cherry trees in the graveyard blossom. A very unique building any time of year.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
John Martyn, OBE (who passed away 29th January 2009), was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums, working with artists such as Eric Clapton and David Gilmour. He has been described by The Times as 'an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues.
This excellent track is from 'Solid Air', a folk jazz album released in 1973. Its a truly classic album and sounds as fresh as a chill-out album even today. 'Solid Air', the title track, was dedicated to a friend of Martyn's, Nick Drake. Drake died of an antidepressant overdose 18 months after the album was released.
Martyn said of the track 'Solid Air' 'It was done for a friend of mine, and it was done right with very clear motives, and I'm very pleased with it, for varying reasons. It has got a very simple message, but you'll have to work that one out for yourself.'

Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. 'The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as 'one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it'. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4683303596 - 'Iris is a genus of around 260 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name. A common sight in the early summer in europe.
Irises are perennial herbs, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises), or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect flowering stems, which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section.
The inflorescences are fan-shaped and contain one or more symmetrical six-lobed flowers. These grow on a pedicel or lack a footstalk. The three sepals, which are spreading or droop downwards, are referred to as 'falls'. They expand from their narrow base, which in some of the rhizomatous irises has a 'beard' (a tuft of short upright extensions growing in its midline), into a broader expanded portion ('limb'), often adorned with veining, lines or dots. The three, sometimes reduced, petals stand upright, partly behind the sepal bases. They are called 'standards'. Some smaller iris species have all six lobes pointing straight outwards, but generally, limb and standards differ markedly in appearance. They are united at their base into a floral tube that lies above the ovary (known as an inferior ovary). The styles divide towards the apex into petaloid branches
this is significant in pollination
The iris fruit is a capsule which opens up in three parts to reveal the numerous seeds within. In some species, these bear an aril.
Rhizomes of the German Iris (I. germanica) and Sweet Iris (I. pallida) are traded as orris root and are used in perfume and medicine, though more common in ancient times than today. Today Iris essential oil (absolute) from flowers are sometimes used in aromatherapy as sedative medicines. The dried rhizomes are also given whole to babies to help in teething. Gin brands such as Bombay Sapphire and Magellan Gin use orris root and sometimes iris flowers for flavour and colour.
The red fleur-de-lis in the coat-of-arms of Florence (Italy) and also of the scouts, descends from the white iris which is native to Florence and which grew even in its city walls. This white iris, displayed against a red background, became the symbol of Florence until the Medici family, to signal a change in political power, reversed the colors making the white one red and setting in motion a centuries-long breeding program to hybridize a red iris.
So, often taken for granted, the Iris is actually a very interesting plant indeed!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4604789614 - 'The common Bluebell, (Hyacinthoides non-scripta to be precise) grows from bulbs and can be expected about four weeks after daffadils in Britain. By the time they appear, frosts should be receeding and days getting noticably warmer.
Other common names for it include auld man's bell, bluebell, calverkeys, culverkeys, English bluebell, jacinth, ring-o'-bells, wilde hyacint, and wood bells (probably as they appear in shaded woodland almost spontainiously.
Bees are a favourite to pollinate these plants. Their black seeds may survive long periods of time emerging after several years' absence if suitable conditions recur. The seedlings can flower in two years from seed and as a result, bluebells can quickly spread to form a carpet in suitable conditions.
In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as 'bluebell woods'. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4587919792 - 'Few plants captivate a nation quite like the Japanese flowering cherry or 'cherry blossom'. Pick up a 100 yen coin and at any time of the year it reminds you of the Sakura.
In Japan cherry blossoms among other things symbolize clouds. This is due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition that is often associated with Buddhistic influence, and which is embodied in the concept of 'mono no aware' (the life of things). The association of the cherry blossom with 'mono no aware' dates back to 18th-century scholar Motoori Norinaga.
The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality. For this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect. The band Kagrra, which is associated with the visual kei movement, is an example of this latter phenomenon. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled 'Sakura', and several pop songs. The flower is also represented on all manner of consumer goods in Japan, including kimono, stationery, and dishware.
Cherry blossom is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love, affection and represents spring. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art.
At Himeji Castle Japan During World War II, the cherry blossom was used to motivate the Japanese people, to stoke nationalism and militarism among the populace. Japanese pilots would paint them on the sides of their planes before embarking on a suicide mission, or even take branches of the trees with them on their missions. There is a plane of this type in the Manchester museum of science of industry. My friend Josef Knocke always comes to mind when I look at it as does a particularly tasteless joke, that I would not repeat here for a family audience.
A cherry blossom painted on the side of the bomber symbolized the intensity and ephemerality of life. In this way, the aesthetic association was altered such that falling cherry petals came to represent the sacrifice of youth in suicide missions to honor the emperor. The government even encouraged the people to believe that the souls of downed warriors were reincarnated in the blossoms.
In its colonial enterprises, aparently imperial Japan often planted cherry trees as a means of 'claiming occupied territory as Japanese space'. Consider this as you pass below those lovely pink blossoms...

By the mid-nineteenth century, wearing of traditional smock-frocks by country laborers was dying out. As the authentic tradition was fading away, a romantic nostalgia for England's rural past, as epitomized by the illustrations of Kate Greenaway, led to a fashion for women's and children's dresses and blouses loosely styled after smock-frocks. These garments are generally of very fine linen or cotton and feature delicate smocking embroidery done in cotton floss in contrasting colors
smocked garments with pastel-colored embroidery remain popular for babies and small children.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4556321256 - 'A picture of spring just about to emerge!
Spotted on Knutsford Road Grappenhall, Cheshire, purple cherry blossom on a tree just about ready to open. In Japan the cherry blossom has nearly mystical spring significance.
During the Heian Period (794–1191), Japanese sought to emulate many practices from China, including the social phenomenon of flower viewing (hanami), where the imperial households, poets, singers and other aristocrats would gather and celebrate under the blossoms. In Japan, cherry trees were planted and cultivated for their beauty, for the adornment of the grounds of the nobility of Kyoto, at least as early as 794. In China, the ume 'plum' tree (actually a species of apricot) was held in highest regard, but by the middle of the ninth century, the cherry blossom had replaced the plum as the favored species in Japan.
Every year the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry-blossom front) as it moves northward up the archipelago with the approach of warmer weather via nightly forecasts following the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. It proceeds into areas at the higher altitudes and northward, arriving in Hokkaidō in the colder east a few weeks later. Japanese pay close attention to these forecasts and turn out in large numbers at parks, shrines, and temples with family and friends to hold flower-viewing parties.
Hanami festivals celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossom and for many are a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. The custom of hanami dates back many centuries in Japan: the eighth-century chronicle Nihon Shoki records hanami festivals being held as early as the third century CE.
Most Japanese schools and public buildings have cherry blossom trees outside of them. Since the fiscal and school year both begin in April, in many parts of Honshū, the first day of work or school coincides with the cherry blossom season.

Of this once proud nation
Can you sense the fear and the hatred

by the greedy hands of politics and half truths
The beaten generation, the beaten generation
Reared on a diet of prejudice and mis-information
The beaten generation, the beaten generation
Open your eyes, open your imagination
We're being sedated by the gasoline fumes
and hypnotised by the satellites
Into believing what is good and what is right
You may be worshipping the temples of mammon
Or lost in the prisons of religion
But can you still walk back to happiness
When you've nowhere left to run?
And if they send in the special police
To deliver us from liberty and keep us from peace
Then won't the words sit ill upon their tongues
when they tell us justice is being done
and that freedom lives in the barrels of a .....warm gun

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3734237235 - 'Latin name Buddleja davidii.
Unusually no butterflies on this one.
Buddleja, often spelled Buddleia is a genus of flowering plants. It is now included in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, though in the past was previously classified in either the Loganiaceae or in a family of its own, the Buddlejaceae. The generic name honours Reverend Adam Buddle (1662–1715), who was a botanist and a rector in Essex, England.
The roughly 100 species are mostly shrubs, a few being trees
the largest species reach 30 m (98 ft) tall, but most species rarely exceed 5 m (16 ft) tall. Both evergreen and deciduous species occur. They are native throughout the warmer parts of the New World from the southern United States south to Chile, and widely in the Old World in Africa and the warmer parts of Asia, but absent as natives from Europe and Australasia. The species are divided into two groups based on their floral type, those in the New World being dioecious, and those in the Old World being monoecious.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3690682981 - 'The second of my summer garden lavenders in flower from the village of Grappenhall, Cheshire UK.
Essential oil of lavender has some well known antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It was used in hospitals during WWI to disinfect floors and walls. These extracts are also now used as pleasent fragrances for bath products. the oil should not be ingested however. Topically, lavender oil is cytotoxic. It increases photosensitivity as well. Lavender oil is cytotoxic to human skin cells in vitro (endothelial cells and fibroblasts) at a concentration of 0.25%.
I read an article about lavender and tea tree oil, contributing to gynaecomastia. This is an abnormal breast tissue growth in prepubescent boys. The use of shampoo and similar products, containing lavender and tea tree oils, in some boys resulted in this condition. Professor Leuan Hughes, who was a child hormone specialist at Cambridge University suggested that 'these oils can mimic oestrogens' and 'people should be a little bit careful about using these products' Well yes, clearly (!)
Lavenders are from the mint family, probbaly explaining its fragrence. There are 39 species in Lavandula. The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs native from Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia and India.
They are occasionally found growing wild as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. However, since lavender cross-pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species. The color of the flowers of some forms has come to be just referred to as 'lavender'.
Lilac, purple or blue flowers are borne in whorls, held on spikes rising above the foliage. Over near Kings Lynn, 'Lavendin' is the most cultivated species for commercial use. This is because its flowers are bigger and the plants are easier to harvest, although Lavendin oil is regarded to be of a lower quality than some other harder to cultivate and harvest varieties.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4631607472 - 'When I am in Manchester, I usually take a short cut through this fabulous place, which you can do unless a performance is in progress. Many moons ago I used to go to meetings of the junior chamber of commerce here, in one of the side rooms. On this day it was spookily deserted. I stopped to check a text message while my camera with on my shoulder and below me a solitary man, dressed in black crossed the room without sound.
It has a great feeling of history (the last trading values still remain on the trading board for cotton etc) from 1968 and is very modern with its central circular 'pod' of a theatre at its heart. Its great to see events here and I have seen Shakespeare plays as well as the veritable John Shuttleworth (AKA Jilted John).
The Royal Exchange is a grade II listed Victorian building bounded by St Ann’s Square, Market Street and Cross Street. The complex includes the Royal Exchange Theatre, and the Royal Exchange shopping centre.
The current building is the last of several buildings on the site used for commodities exchange, primarily but not exclusively of cotton and textiles.
The first exchange was built near to the present site in 1792. The first exchange was replaced by a second, larger, exchange that was constructed between 1806 and 1809. The second exchange was enlarged between 1847 and 1849. The second exchange was in turn replaced, by a third exchange by 'Mills &
Murgatroyd', constructed between 1867 and 1874. The building was then extended and modified by 'Bradshaw Gass &
Hope' between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading room in England. Thus was the importance of Manchester at this time.
The theatre's unique design was conceived by Richard Negri of Wimbledon School of Art, and was intended to create an unusually vivid and immediate relationship between actors and audiences. As the floor of the Exchange would not be able to take the great weight of the theatre and its audience, the module is suspended from four columns that also carry the hall's central dome. Only the stage area and ground-level seating rest on the floor of the hall itself.
The theatre can seat up to 700 people on three levels, making it the largest theatre in the round in Britain. There are 400 seats at ground level in a raked configuration, above which lie two galleries, each with 150 seats set in two rows. Every seat has a clear view of the stage.
Repairs after the IRA bombing adjacent in Corporation Street took over two years to complete and cost £32 million, a sum provided by the National Lottery.
The Royal Exchange building and the theatre itself are reputed to be haunted. One of the ghosts is reputed to be that of the actor and founding artistic director, James Maxwell. Another is that of a maternal Victorian lady, well dressed and with 'a passion for drink'.
In 2006, the building was the subject of a paranormal investigation by the Most Haunted programme on Living TV.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHMM - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth ?13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ERC - In a diesel?hydraulic multiple unit (DHMU), a hydraulic torque converter, a type of fluid coupling, acts as the transmission medium for the motive power of the diesel engine to turn the wheels. Some units feature a hybrid mix of hydraulic and mechanical transmissions, usually reverting to the latter at higher operating speeds as this decreases engine RPM and noise.
The British Rail Class 185 Desiro is a class of diesel-hydraulic multiple-unit (DHMU) passenger trains built by Siemens Transportation Systems in Germany for the train operating company First TransPennine Express. They are currently operated by TransPennine Express.
A ?260 million order for 51 three-car trains and associated maintenance depots was placed in 2003, and deliveries took place between 2006 and 2007.
In 2003, First TransPennine Express (FTPE), a consortium of FirstGroup and Keolis, was awarded the TransPennine Express (TPE) franchise. One obligation under the franchise agreement was to introduce a new fleet of diesel multiple units, capable of operating at speeds up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Also specified was air conditioning, two toilets per vehicle with one suitable for reduced-mobility passengers, gangways between individual carriages, luggage and bicycle storage space, passenger compartment CCTV, provision for wheelchair passengers, and first-class seating. Additionally, the train's acceleration was to be an improvement on the Class 158, and comparable to the Class 180. The agreement specified 168 carriages, with an initial option to reduce the carriage order by 18
The franchise agreement also required the construction of two depots for the new rolling stock
the main depot was to be at Manchester, with a depot for stabling and maintenance at York. In addition, a depot at Cleethorpes was to be upgraded with refuelling and controlled emission toilet servicing facilities, and a train electric auxiliary supply.
