Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJFF - Former brewery site: Stanhope Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L8, England, UK
Higsons was a major Liverpool brewery founded in 1780, historically based on Stanhope Street in the Baltic Triangle area of the city. Brewing ceased in the 1990s, but the brand remains strongly associated with Liverpool brewing heritage. A close-up photograph of a Higsons Pale Ale cask ale beer clip mounted on a traditional handpull inside a Liverpool pub, England. The blue circular badge displays the Higsons branding, including the founding date of 1780 and the wording Liverpool's Original Beer, reinforcing the brand's deep association with the city's brewing history.
Higsons was one of Liverpool's most prominent historic breweries, operating for over two centuries from its main site on Stanhope Street before closing in the late twentieth century. The brewery played a significant role in Liverpool's pub culture, supplying beers to tied houses across the city and wider Merseyside.
Beer clips such as this are a defining feature of British cask ale service, used to identify the beer being served from hand-pulled pumps on pub bars. Their continued presence reflects the enduring popularity of traditional real ale and the influence of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in preserving British beer heritage.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British pub culture, real ale traditions, historic breweries, Liverpool's brewing heritage, cask ale service, alcohol branding, and the cultural significance of traditional pubs in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK09 - The Dominic Cummings scandal, or the Dominic Cummings affair, was a series of events involving the British political strategist Dominic Cummings during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. The events include at least one journey that Cummings, then-chief adviser of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and his family made from London to County Durham after the start of a national lockdown in March 2020 while they were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
Reports of the trip first emerged in May 2020 following investigations by the Daily Mirror and The Guardian. Questions arose about whether the conduct of Cummings and his wife was lawful and appropriate within the framework of government advice and guidance, given that the public were ordered to stay at home, that all non-essential travel was forbidden during the lockdown, and that infected persons had been instructed to self-isolate.
Cummings denied he had broken any rules in a press conference a few days later. Durham Constabulary investigated the trip, concluding there may have been a minor breach, but did not take any further action. The scandal led to criticism from Members of Parliament (MPs) within and outside the ruling Conservative Party, backlash in the media and from the public, and calls for Cummings to be sacked or resign. Prominent politicians in the government, including Johnson, rejected these and expressed support for Cummings. Polling suggested that support for the Conservative Party and confidence in the British government's pandemic response fell as a result of the scandal.

Roland Egerton Warburton's poem on the plaque above the pump reads:
Blessings are in never ending love Are put on us from Heaven above This running stream with ceaseless flow Springs from bounteous earth below.
Alike in both his goodness show Whom heaven and earth make its own.
This natural spring water in Budworth, Northwich, Cheshire, England, runs through a publically-funded stream that comes out from a tap. It's located in a sheltered house and is accessible to the public for free 24/7. Although it's tap water, several people in the locality have been using it for ages. There are no lab tests to back its quality, though. So drink at your own risk.
The correct coordinates are 53.29294388940146, -2.5090968151409543 and the complete address is Great Budworth, Northwich CW9 6HE, United Kingdom.
Directions:
To get to this spring water, you need to take the High Street from The Great Budworth and head to West. A few miles away there's a Warrington crossroad. This tap water should be near the crossroad preferably on your left just before the crossroad. It's famously known as the Great Budworth Drinking Fountain. Look for the hut-shaped construction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRX4 - A close view of a pub bar counter displaying three London-brewed ales on hand pumps: Five Points Pale, Kazbek from Redemption Brewing Company, and Young's London Original. A freshly poured pint of golden ale sits on the polished wooden bar, with the distinctive pump clips arranged behind it, representing a mix of independent and historic London breweries.
The scene captures the traditional presentation of cask-conditioned beer in an English pub, with hand-pulled pumps, branded clips, and a well-stocked back bar visible in the background. These beers reflect the diversity of London's brewing scene, combining long-established names such as Young's with newer independent breweries that have contributed to the city's modern craft-beer revival.
Photographed indoors under warm ambient lighting, the image documents everyday pub culture in England, illustrating themes of social life, hospitality, and British brewing heritage. It is suitable for use in editorial coverage relating to pubs, beer, London food and drink culture, and the contemporary UK brewing industry. Five Points Pale ? Five Points Brewing Company
Kazbek ? Redemption Brewing Company
Young's London Original ? Young's Brewery

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R1WX6X - From Here' by Turner Prize shortlisted artist Nathan Coley is a landmark new co-commission between Liverpool Biennial and Culture Liverpool on Liverpool's UNESCO World Heritage Waterfront.
The text-based light sculpture is made up of the words From Here, All the Worlds Futures, From Here, All the Worlds Pasts. Inspired by the writing of German philosopher, Walter Benjamin, and acknowledging the curator, Okwui Enwezor's influential exhibition All The World's Futures at Venice Biennale 2015, Nathan Coley's expansion of the phrase presents a new meaning that reinforces the power of Liverpool as a place, its history and speaks to the hope for the future.
Measuring twenty metres in length, the largest text work made to date by the artist, has been designed specifically to wrap around the four sides of the St. George's Dock Pumping Station, an iconic Victorian red brick building located on Mann Island in the heart of the city, and still used on a daily basis by the building's owners Network Rail.
Nathan Coley lives and works in Glasgow. This will be the first time he has shown in Liverpool since his work was featured in the Turner Prize Exhibition at Tate Liverpool in 2007, for which he was shortlisted.
Recent solo exhibitions have included Parliament Hall, Edinburgh (2019), Parafin, London (2019, 2017)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1W2C - Heptonstall is a small village and civil parish within the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire, England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The population of Heptonstall, including the hamlets of Colden and Slack Top, is 1,448, increasing to 1,470 at the 2011 Census. The town of Hebden Bridge lies directly to the south-east. Although Heptonstall is part of Hebden Bridge as a post town, it is not within the Hebden Royd town boundaries.
The village is on the route of the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular walk around the hills and valleys of Calderdale
The place-name 'Heptonstall' is first recorded as Heptonstall in the 1274 Wakefield Court Rolls, and in 1316 in the Feudal Aids. The name means the stall or stable in Hebden. The name 'Hebden' means rose-hip dene or valley
Heptonstall was the site of a battle during the early part of the English Civil War in 1643.
Historically a centre for hand-loom weaving, Heptonstall's cottages and terraced houses are characterised by large first-floor windows to maximise the light for weaving
In the mid-1980s the paving on a road through Heptonstall was removed, revealing the original stone setts. Although there was a plan to remove the setts, local protests convinced the council to restore them. At the same time the existing concrete street lights were replaced with late 19th-century cast-iron gas lamps. Both developments acted as a traffic calming measure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG92W3 - Pump clips are badges that are attached to handpumps in pubs to show which cask ales are available. In addition to the name of the beer served through the pump, they may give other details such as the brewer's name and alcoholic strength of the beer and serve as advertising.
Pump clips can be made of various materials. For beers that are brewed regularly by the big breweries, high quality plastic, metal or ceramic pump clips are used. Smaller breweries would use a printed plastic pump clip and for one-off beers laminated paper is used. There are variations on the material used, and the gaudiness or tastefulness of the decoration depending on how much the brewery wants to market their beers at the point of sale. Novelty pump clips have also been made of wood, slate and compact discs. Some even incorporate electronic flashing lights. Older pump clips were made of enamel.
The term pump clip originates from the clip that attaches it to the pump handle. These consist of a two-piece plastic ring which clamps to the handle with two screws. Plastic and laminated paper pump clips usually have a white plastic clip fixed with a sticky double-sided pad that pushes onto the handle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K967KB - Pick-your-own pumpkins offer diversified income channels
The market for pumpkins in the UK has seen a huge growth in the past decade, with the public increasingly looking for an on-farm experience and to buy directly from producers.
Pumpkins can offer significant additional income for farmers if done well, especially when accompanied by other value-added extras such as refreshments or attractions.
There are two main markets ? either selling direct to the consumer or wholesale. Each has its benefits and challenges.
When growing for wholesale, there are often extra costs for grading, on-farm storage and transport. The labour-intensive harvest process for wholesale at scale will also need seasonal labour, which can be difficult to find.
Selling direct to consumers poses other challenges, including public access to the farm.
Pumpkin seeds can be planted indoors from mid- to late April, however it is more common to plant seeds and seedlings outdoors from May to early June.
Lack of fruit can be an issue and diseases include powdery mildew and grey mould. Pumpkins can also suffer in very wet seasons and may need irrigation during a dry summer.
Will John and Chris Creed, consultants at agricultural adviser Adas, say that the market is becoming saturated in some regions of the UK. However, businesses can still be profitable if they are able to market effectively.
What are the essential requirements and costs?
Mr Creed says: To be successful, you have got to have infrastructure, hard car parking, booking systems, strong social media campaigns and good road access.
A potentially less risky option is to grow for an existing business, which may have already invested in the infrastructure to cater for the public.
Some farm shops and garden centres have very good infrastructures to accommodate the public, but they haven't got much ground. So they may be able to grow some and then stock up from a local grower, which can be a win-win situation for everybody,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBF - This image shows a colourful Trick or Treaters Welcome sign placed in a residential garden decorated for Halloween. The sign is surrounded by seasonal props including skeleton figures, ghost decorations, and themed garden ornaments, creating a welcoming and playful atmosphere for visiting children.
In the UK, displaying a sign such as this has become a common way for households to signal participation in Halloween activities, particularly trick or treating. It provides reassurance to families and helps manage expectations within neighbourhoods by clearly indicating which homes are open to visitors.
Halloween has grown in popularity across Britain over recent decades, blending traditional folklore with modern community-focused celebrations. Garden displays and signage form part of this visual culture, transforming ordinary residential spaces into festive, themed environments during late October.
Photographed in daylight, the image offers a documentary view of contemporary Halloween customs in the UK. It is well suited for editorial use covering seasonal traditions, family activities, community life, autumn celebrations, and cultural change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH3T - The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham.
The benefits of Cheltenham's mineral waters had been recognised since 1716, but not until after the arrival of Henry Skillicorne in 1738 did serious exploitation of their potential as an attraction begin. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable, and wells were opened up at several points round the town. Pittville, the vision of Joseph Pitt, was a planned 'new town' development of the 1820s, in which the centre-piece was (and remains) a pump-room where the waters of one of the more northerly wells could be taken.
The Pump
The Pump Room was built by the architect John Forbes between 1825 and 1830. It is a Grade I listed building standing at the northern end of Pittville Lawn with landscaped grounds running down to a lake. The building contains the original Pump, made of marble and scagliola, to which the waters are today fed by electric pumping.
The building has a colonnade of Ionic columns
the interior houses a ballroom on its ground floor. Further Ionic columns support a gallery under a dome from which music might be played
on upper floors there were a billiard room, library and reading room. Above the colonnade are three statues, by Lucius Gahagen, erected in 1827, of the goddess Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates.
The Pump Room and its grounds were managed during the 19th century by a succession of lessees, who offered the typical fare of pleasure gardens including menageries, exhibitions and balloon ascents. However the concession did not prove lucrative. Eventually Pitt himself went bankrupt and in 1890 the Room and the grounds passed into the ownership of the town council.
They are now part of The Cheltenham Trust, a charity which also manages the Cheltenham Town Hall, the Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, the Prince of Wales Stadium and Leisure @ - plus the town's Tourist Information Centre

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3082P - Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by brothers Francis (1839?97) and William J.(1844?1911). Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre, including manufacturing pumps, presses, and small steam engines.
In 1869 they had the foresight to acquire the UK and world (except German) rights to the patents of Otto and Langden of Cologne for the new gas fueled atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1876 these rights were extended to the famous Otto four-stroke cycle engine. The changeover to four stroke engines was remarkably rapid with the last atmospheric engines being made in 1877.
The business flourished. In 1881, Crossley Brothers became a private limited company (i.e. Crossley Brothers Ltd.), and then in 1882 it moved to larger premises in Pottery Lane, Openshaw, in eastern Manchester.
Crossley Brothers built diesel engines for stationary, marine and locomotive use. There was a wide range of engines from six to 3200 horsepower (Crossley) and up to 9000 horsepower (Crossley-Pielstick).
Their marine engines had a reputation for durability and reliability.

The Appleton Thorn Village Hall near Warrington has been named the best in the country in CAMRA's Club of the Year 2019 awards, one of the most respected and well-known club awards in the UK.
This is the second time and almost 10 years to the date that the former school has won the accolade for its ever-changing range of seven beers from regional and micro-breweries. The attractive sandstone building is the hub of the community, housing a comfortable bar area, small pool room, garden area and bowling green. Home cooked food is served at Sunday lunchtime and the function room hosts quizzes, live music and an annual beer festival in October. The recent addition of a gin bar has proved popular with the club's members.
Keith Spencer, Club of the Year organiser said: This club is the very hub of the community, from hosting pre-school events to yoga, dance, Guides and rehearsals for the Vale Royal String Orchestra! It is a very deserving winning of this year's Club of the Year competition and a shining example of the intrinsic role that clubs can play in their local areas.
Chris Massey, Steward of the Appleton Thorn Village Hall said: It is a huge honour to not only win the Club of the Year title once ? but twice! We are a true community club and take pride in hosting a range of activities and events for our locals and serving great beers as well.
The CAMRA Club of the Year competition is run in conjunction with Club Mirror magazine, with the simple aim of finding the clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale ? those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition. Clubs are nominated by CAMRA branches across the country and judged by a panel of volunteer CAMRA members throughout the year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FWE - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means ?white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern ?concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYC0 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTC - This image shows a row of traditional cask ale hand pumps from Joseph Holt, one of Manchester's best-known historic breweries, displayed on a pub bar in Manchester city centre. The pump clips include well-established Holt beers such as Holt Mild, Holt Bitter, and Two Hoots, reflecting the brewery's long association with north-west England pub culture.
Founded in 1849, Joseph Holt Brewery remains an important part of Manchester's brewing heritage, with its beers commonly found in tied and free houses across the region. The wooden pump handles, branded badges, and polished bar setting evoke the classic British public house interior, closely associated with cask-conditioned real ale and CAMRA-style drinking traditions.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British pubs, real ale culture, brewing heritage, hospitality interiors, and Manchester social life, and would work well in features on UK beer, traditional pubs, or regional identity.

The Bridgewater canal reach Stockton heath about 1772, the area around London Bridge and Thorn Marine developed over the next few years and became known as Stockton Quays, there was warehousing, an inn, toll house,Blacksmiths, stabling, barns, and bank riders cottages. one of these bank riders cottages became Thorn Marine.
A very successful packet boat service started up running from the London Bridge Inn to Manchester allowing the gentry to travel in style and comfort on the last part of there journey to Manchester, good were also shipped from the warehouse over the road, The boats were in them days pulled by horses, and unusually the horse for the packet boat were trotted along the towpath and were ridden by Bank riders who lived in what is now Thorn Marine.
The quays at thorn marine were also used by Caldwells to ship there tools spades, picks, etc for the gold rush in america and the First World War. The good were shipped to Liverpool where they were loaded onto sea going ships
During the First and second world wars the canal was also used to move munitions and men to Liverpool to be shipped across for the war effort.
Since we took over
We passed Thorn Marine in the spring of 1991 on our 25' Dawncraft Hammie on a two week trip around the Cheshire ring, we noticed it was looking a bit unloved and there was a for sale sign out side.
A few phone calls on our return home we discovered it was still for sale, but not with the agents anymore. After nearly 12 months of negotiations with the vendor and The Manchester ship Canal Company, we finally moved in on the 11th April 1992.
Over the next few years Margaret turned the business around from a fancy good shop back to a chandlery with help from Brian and Nigel when they were not working in their own careers. Brian decided in 1997 to stop paining and decorating and joined Margret working full time in the shop.
In 1997 we too delivery of Rambling Thorn our purpose built day boat

Iconic pub The Woodman to close after 'HS2 works' and cost of living crisis 'kills' business
The cult pub plans to sell as much beer as possible before liquidators get their hands on it after being 'isolated' by HS2 works
One of Birmingham's oldest pubs is calling last orders for the final time. Despite putting up a brave fight, The Woodman pub has thrown in the towel after years of being 'isolated by HS2 works'.
The iconic Victorian venue, based on New Canal Street, by Millennium Point, says it has faced an uphill battle ever since work began for Curzon Street railway station located 20-feet away. Roads leading to the back-street boozer were cut off and cones, scaffolding and barriers became synonymous with the pub's identity.
Last year, general manager Will Young said it was miraculous that the 125-year-old pub still traded on the heels of the pandemic. He hoped the venue would survive HS2 and Covid disruptions and come out the other side stronger and on a whole new level.
But sadly, it is not to be. The beloved watering hole has announced it will close its doors permanently after being ravaged.
It said: Friends, family, regular customers and those who we see less regularly....it's finally happened. Nine years after rescuing the pub from dilapidation, The Woodman will be ceasing to trade.
We have battled hard to keep our favourite pub in the world open through adversity. But in the end, the combination of the relentless HS2 encroachment (which has begun to feel like there is no end in sight), the pandemic, the cost of living crisis and the soaring fuel prices...have beaten us.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPFX - A craft brewery or microbrewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and is often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The microbrewing movement began in both the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, although traditional artisanal brewing existed in Europe for centuries and subsequently spread to other countries. As the movement grew, and some breweries expanded their production and distribution, the more encompassing concept of craft brewing emerged. A brewpub is a pub that brews its own beer for sale on the premises
The term microbrewery originated in the UK in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries that focused on producing traditional cask ale independently of major brewers or pub chains. In 1972, Martin Sykes established Selby Brewery as the first new independent brewing company for 50 years
Some British brewpubs specialize in ale, while others brew continental lagers and wheat beers. The Ministry of Ales, Burnley
The Masons Arms in Headington, Oxford
The Brunswick Inn, Derby (in 2010, half of the beers sold by the establishment were brewed on-site)
The Watermill pub, Ings Cumbria
and the Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds are some examples of small independent brewpubs in the UK.
The city of Bristol was identified by The Guardian in May 2014 as an area where the microbrewery industry had flourished. Ten brewpubs, such as Zerodegrees, The Tobacco Factory, Copper Jacks Crafthouse and The Urban Standard, were identified as thriving Bristol craft beer establishments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN106 - Orkney, Shetland, Inverness, Ayrshire and Fife are among the regions represented in a series of 12 limited edition Tennent's fonts.
Designed to create ?stand out' on the bar, the fonts are currently being rolled out to selected pubs and bars across Scotland.
Eleven regions ? Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Fife, Stirling, Ayrshire, Shetland, Orkney and Inverness ? are represented along with a general Scotland design for outlets outwith the selected regions.
Each of the fonts, created by design agency D8, features landmarks and references from the region it represents, such as Edinburgh's Calton Hill, the Finnieston Crane in Glasgow, Aberdeen's Dunnottar Castle, Deep Sea World in Fife, Orkney's Viking longship, shinty in Inverness and Perth's Tay Bridge.
Alan Hay, on-trade sales director at Tennent's, said 250 fonts of each design will be rolled out this summer.
Supporting our customers will always be our priority, and following the success of our customisable founts, we are now rolling out fount designs for specific regions of Scotland, he said.
No other brand knows the Scottish on-trade like we do and we're sure the cultural references on each fount will create a real talking point amongst pub-goers
we can't wait to see how they look in bars around the country.
We want our drinkers to have a quality experience when enjoying a pint of Tennent's, and that starts with how our fount looks on the bar.
The roll out of the limited edition fonts comes after Tennent's extended its partnership with Scottish Rugby in a seven-figure deal.
Under the new agreement, Tennent's will continue its relationship with the Scotland national team and the country's two professional sides: Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, alongside the additional title sponsorship of the Scottish domestic leagues.
The brewer will additionally take on the naming rights of the Premiership and National leagues, with the newly-formed Scottish Championship to follow in 2019/2020.

John Fuller's Griffin Brewery dates from 1816
in 1845, his son, John Bird Fuller, was joined by Henry Smith and John Turner.
Fuller's owns and operates over 380 pubs, inns and hotels across the south of England. London Pride beer is the flagship beer of Fuller's Brewery. It is sold both cask-conditioned and bottled.
London Pride has been brewed at the Griffin Brewery since 1958. It takes its name from a common name for the Saxifraga ?? urbium flower, in use by the nineteenth century. The flower provided shoots of recovery on the bombed sites left by the London Blitz of the early 1940s, and as such held symbolism for Londoners, celebrated in a patriotic song written in 1941 by No?l Coward
In 2019, Asahi Breweries bought Fuller's Brewery from Fuller, Smith & Turner plc, the sale being subject to a Fuller's shareholders' vote at a forthcoming EGM

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9BA - Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of Hallows' Even or Hallows' Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain
that such festivals may have had pagan roots
and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA4G - Robinsons Brewery is a family-run, regional brewery, founded in 1849 at the Unicorn Inn in Stockport, England. The company owns more than 300 public houses, mostly in North West England.
William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)
T. Schofield & Son, Ashton under Lyne (1926)
Kays Atlas Brewery, Ardwick (1929) and Bell & Co, Stockport (1949).
The brewery owns many historic pubs, including the New Hall Inn in Bowness on Windermere.

This beer is a collaboration with the anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate. This creates a classic pale ale with a lot of body and citrus flavours
Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods ? Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poit??n would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Our Beers are in pubs all over the UK and we've recently launched our online shop and new Taproom in London Fields. Come and join us for a pint!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWKX - ROBINSONS RELEASE NEW SEASONAL BEER ?FROM THE LIGHT SIDE': HOPPY WAN KENOBI
THIS IS THE BEER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
180 year old family-run-brewers, Robinsons, have unveiled a new seasonal beer designed to get drinkers to come out in force: Hoppy Wan Kenobi
a golden ale inspired by the world-famous movie: Star Wars.
Available for just two months throughout June and July, this noble brew is crisp, tart and packing a punch. The pump clip has been carefully designed to capture the legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, proudly presenting his iconic blue plasma blade lightsaber. ?Search your feelings' and you'll find the hop is strong with this one. Loaded with cascade and sovereign hops, and interlaced with light citrus aromas, this 4% ABV limited-edition golden ale is dangerously drinkable.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is part of Robinsons' series of seasonal movie-themed ales that have been specially brewed for 2018.
Gill Yates, Brands Manager for Robinsons Brewery, explains: For our latest seasonal beer, Hoppy Wan Kenobi, we decided to continue to play on our popular TV and film series theme, as from our customer's response we're aware of how well it works. In 2017, we sold 770,688 pints of our seasonal beers altogether. This was a great result and we're pleased to be able to provide drinkers with fun, relatable ales which look fantastic alongside our other beers on the bar. We hope that everybody gets a chance to taste this golden delight.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is available throughout June and July regionally via select Robinsons' pubs and free trade across the North West, Cumbria and North Wales, and nationally via listings with Heineken, Enterprise Inns Carlsberg, Punch, Admiral Taverns, Stonegate,

A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. It's a veritable museum with photographs of the station in it's heyday, railway and other memorabilia. See http://www.stalybridgebuffetbar.co.uk/ to read more about the Buffet Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KEF - Timothy Taylor's famous award-winning Best Bitter has been renamed Boltmaker.
The tipple has been given the rebranding following a competition, which attracted over 450 entries.
The winning entry was from Phil Booth, landlord of the Boltmakers Arms in East Parade, Keighley. He has received ?1,000 ? which he is donating to Manorlands ? and 36 gallons of the newly-named beer.
This is just fantastic ? when I entered I never expected to win, said Phil. What could be better for business than having a beer called Boltmaker on my bar! It will help to spread the name far and wide.
Timothy Taylor sales director Grant Simpson said: Exactly 60 years ago we ran a similar competition to name a beer ? it became Landlord and has grown into an iconic brand.

The OKH, like its more famous neighbour The George Inn, can be found down one of those ancient alleyways that branch like pili from Borough High Street ? look for the hanging sign over the pathway. Inside, the main room looks like it's stuck in some former decade, with glossy paint finishes, peeling picture frames and a good old fashioned bar. You practically have to walk through the bar to get at the stairs, which lead up to a quirky function room with a penchant for Titanic memorabilia. Several groups use the room for monthly meetups, including the rather wonderful South East London Folklore Society. The beer choice is limited, but always well kept.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A track to enjoy with a drink in your hand or a bar of quality chocolate, this one.
The word 'morcheeba' is meant to indicate 'the way of cannabis'. This originated from 'MOR'(middle of the road) plus 'Cheeba' (informal name of cannabis).
Morcheeba mix pop, hip-hop, rock and electronica and are based in the UK. They have consisted of Paul &
Ross Godfrey, Skye Edwards and recently Daisy Martey, among many guests. Their debut album 'Who Can You Trust?' on China Records was released in April 1996.
This track comes from 'Big Calm' the second album which was more mainstream and pop-ey.
This is the best album to start with Morcheeba, if you check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

The Phoenix Brewery is in Green Lane, Heywood, Lancashire. (OL10 2EP) just outside Manchester, UK. It is a regular at my local Grappenhall beer festival and is described as a 'English Strong Ale'. It is the reason I always buy a ticket for the first night (Friday at a premium of a pound - about $1.40 or EUR 1.15) in order to ensure I try at least a few halves of it. Often by Saturday it is already finito!
As can be seen it warrants its own pump at the festival, rather than just gravity fed like the casks at the back. Here are a few tasting notes from mixed sources:
Copper coloured ... creamy white head ... rich sweet fruit nose ... soft toffee fruits ... lots of big resiny fruits ... little bitter in background.
A nut-brown beer with a light tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and nice grassy and fruity hop notes, leading to a dry grassy and grapefruity finish where notes of toffee lingers.
This beer hits the right spot each time I drink it. Big, bold &
brazen. Drinking well below it\u2019s abv. Pours gold with a soft white head. Complex flavours of hops, citrus &
some malt.Very fruity on the swallow with a suggestion of coriander and herbs in the aftertaste. A really good ale which could easily, mistakenly, be drunk as a session beer.
Clear amber colour, white head. Aroma of caramel/toffee, bit of chocolate. Flavour is soft toffee, nuts, light fruity, citrus, some roasted malts. Light bitter finish. A nice start of the day.
Well, I would say a ringing endorsement there :-)

Thomas Baldwin and later John Palmer were involved in its construction from 1789 onwards. Work continued until its final opening in 1799. Some Corinthian style half columns were added with a nice upper floor later. These open onto Stall street and you can now take tea on the first floor and watch people come and go in the square.
The pump room is now a grand restaurant with nice chandeliers and a piano. It looks to be a great spot for a luxurious quintessential English treat, tea, cakes or champers (just don\u2019t forget your wallet!).

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.
The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
The Baths are a major tourist attraction and, together with the Grand Pump Room, receive more than one million visitors a year, with 1,037,518 people during 2009. It was featured on the 2005 TV program Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the West Country. Visitors can see the Baths and Museum but cannot enter the water. An audio guide is available in several languages.
In 2009 a grant of ?90,000 was made to Bath and North East Somerset Council to contribute towards the cost of re-developing displays and improving access to the Roman Baths, by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport/Wolfson Fund, which was established to promote improvements in Museums and Galleries in England.

The original building dates from 1878 when dockside cranes were converted to hydraulic use. However by 1920 due to the Albert dock being too small for the size of many cargo ships in use, it was mainly utilised for storage.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4083459935 - 'A carved orange pumpkin (Squash) ready for use at the festival of Halloween as a lantern. Lighting provided by a sparker to produce yellow hair.
Pumpkins are commonly carved into decorative lanterns called jack-o'-lanterns for the Halloween season in North America. Throughout Britain and Ireland, there is a long tradition of carving lanterns from vegetables, particularly the turnip, mangelwurzel, or swede.
Not until 1837, however, does jack-o'-lantern appear as a term for a carved vegetable lantern, and the carved lantern does not become associated specifically with Halloween until 1866.
Although every modern chronicle of the holiday repeats the claim that vegetable lanterns were a time-honored component of Halloween celebrations in the British Isles, none gives any primary documentation. In fact, none of the major nineteenth-century chronicles of British holidays and folk customs makes any mention whatsoever of carved lanterns in connection with Halloween. Neither do any of the standard works of the early twentieth century.
In the US, the carved pumpkin was first associated with the harvest season in general, long before it became an emblem of Halloween

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEYAAJ - Orange Halloween Pumpkin with a creative firework sparkler for hair.
A modern jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin, although originally large turnips were carved. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Samhain and Halloween and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out
an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved out, and the lid replaced. It is typically seen during Halloween.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M7JH3Y - The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham.

Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
