Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2R - A low-angle view of the City Road Inn, a traditional Manchester public house, photographed against the backdrop of the Hilton Manchester Deansgate, housed within the Beetham Tower, one of the city's most prominent modern skyscrapers. The juxtaposition emphasises the dramatic contrast between older red-brick pub architecture and the sleek glass and steel of twenty-first-century urban development.
The image was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, suggesting fair weather conditions typical of spring or summer in Manchester. Bright natural light enhances the visual separation between the warm tones and textures of the historic pub frontage and the cool, reflective surfaces of the modern tower behind.
This scene encapsulates Manchester's rapid transformation over recent decades, where long-established neighbourhood pubs coexist alongside large-scale regeneration, luxury hotels and high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The photograph is well suited for editorial use illustrating urban change, regeneration, architectural contrast, hospitality heritage, and the evolving identity of post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK09 - The Dominic Cummings scandal, or the Dominic Cummings affair, was a series of events involving the British political strategist Dominic Cummings during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. The events include at least one journey that Cummings, then-chief adviser of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and his family made from London to County Durham after the start of a national lockdown in March 2020 while they were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
Reports of the trip first emerged in May 2020 following investigations by the Daily Mirror and The Guardian. Questions arose about whether the conduct of Cummings and his wife was lawful and appropriate within the framework of government advice and guidance, given that the public were ordered to stay at home, that all non-essential travel was forbidden during the lockdown, and that infected persons had been instructed to self-isolate.
Cummings denied he had broken any rules in a press conference a few days later. Durham Constabulary investigated the trip, concluding there may have been a minor breach, but did not take any further action. The scandal led to criticism from Members of Parliament (MPs) within and outside the ruling Conservative Party, backlash in the media and from the public, and calls for Cummings to be sacked or resign. Prominent politicians in the government, including Johnson, rejected these and expressed support for Cummings. Polling suggested that support for the Conservative Party and confidence in the British government's pandemic response fell as a result of the scandal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGPNAD - The Red Lion Joseph Holt pub on Bury New Road in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, photographed in bright sunshine with outdoor tables, brick frontage, hanging bunting and traditional pub signage visible. The image shows the large red brick pub building at 398 Bury New Road, a prominent local landmark in Prestwich village and a Joseph Holt public house with strong connections to the local drinking culture around Mark E Smith and The Fall. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of Manchester music heritage, post-punk history, pub culture, northern high streets, Joseph Holt Brewery, traditional locals, live music, beer gardens, pub crawls and cultural tourism in Greater Manchester. Mark E Smith, frontman and permanent driving force of The Fall, grew up around Prestwich and the band was formed locally in 1976, making pubs, shops, streets and landmarks around Bury New Road part of the informal geography of Fall fan pilgrimage. Local writing on Bury New Road notes that Smith drank in pubs along Prestwich village, including The Red Lion, while fan walking guides connect nearby locations with The Fall photographs and Mark E Smith stories. The photograph has added value because the Red Lion is not just a generic pub exterior, but part of a wider Prestwich music trail that also includes the Mark E Smith mural at Chips at No8, local streets, former band haunts and places associated with the band's uncompromising northern identity. Visible details such as the Joseph Holt lettering, red brick elevations, arched doorway, outside benches, chalkboard, railings, pavement, blue sky and strong summer light give the image a clear documentary sense of place. It can illustrate features on The Fall, Mark E Smith, Manchester alternative music, independent pubs, brewery estates, Prestwich regeneration, pub heritage, fan culture, music tourism and the role of ordinary local pubs in shaping cultural memory, alongside wider stories about community, place and northern identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YW0 - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CR - This image shows an ornate stained glass panel depicting the Welsh red dragon, known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch, a powerful national symbol of Wales. The dragon is rendered in vivid shades of red and orange with raised wings and an alert stance, set against a background of green and yellow glass, colours traditionally associated with Welsh identity. The stained glass is housed within a stone arched frame, suggesting the interior of a historic or traditionally styled bar or pub in Cardiff.
The craftsmanship highlights fine leadwork and textured glass, typical of decorative stained glass used in heritage hospitality interiors across Wales. The dragon's posture, claws raised and tail curled, echoes medieval and Celtic imagery long associated with Welsh folklore, resistance, and national pride.
The surrounding stonework and subdued interior lighting imply a historic building or one designed to evoke heritage character. The glass appears to be illuminated from behind, either by daylight or internal lighting, enhancing the saturated colours and giving the dragon a dramatic, almost heraldic presence.
Such imagery is commonly found in Cardiff city-centre pubs and bars that celebrate local culture and history, blending traditional Welsh symbolism with modern hospitality use. The image reflects the enduring visibility of national identity in everyday urban spaces and the continued role of pubs and bars as cultural as well as social landmarks in Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CY - This image shows the former Royal Hotel building on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre, a prominent Victorian-era structure that once operated as one of the city's notable hotels and now houses the Slug & Lettuce bar and restaurant. The stone-fronted facade, with its symmetrical window arrangement and classical detailing, reflects Cardiff's late nineteenth-century commercial architecture and the city's expansion during the industrial and dockland boom years.
The words ROYAL HOTEL remain clearly visible across the upper facade, preserving the building's historic identity despite its modern hospitality use. At street level, contemporary branding and glazing for Slug & Lettuce sit within the original architectural framework, illustrating the adaptive reuse of historic city-centre buildings common across UK high streets.
The photograph appears to have been taken in daylight during warmer months, with people casually dressed and moving along St Mary Street. The pavement looks wet, suggesting recent rain, with subtle reflections adding texture to the urban scene. Overhead tram or utility wires are visible, reinforcing the dense city-centre environment.
St Mary Street is one of Cardiff's principal pedestrian routes, linking shopping, nightlife, and tourism areas, and this building forms part of a continuous historic streetscape that blends heritage architecture with contemporary leisure and retail uses. The image captures both Cardiff's architectural past and its present-day role as a lively capital city destination.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3B4 - The exterior of the Crown Dining Rooms, commonly known as the Crown Liquor Saloon, located on Great Victoria Street in Belfast city centre, Northern Ireland (BT2 7HE). The image focuses on the historic pub frontage and decorative signage, a defining feature of one of Belfast's most famous licensed premises.
Dating from the nineteenth century, the Crown is celebrated as one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian gin palace in the British Isles. The building is distinguished by its richly decorated exterior and famously ornate interior, including tiled walls, stained glass, and private snugs that reflect the social drinking culture of the era.
Situated opposite the former Great Victoria Street railway station and near the Grand Opera House, the Crown Dining Rooms has long been associated with travellers, theatre-goers, and local patrons. Its continued operation as a pub and visitor attraction highlights the importance of historic hospitality venues within Belfast's cultural and tourism economy.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents an iconic Belfast landmark and is suitable for editorial use relating to Irish pubs, Victorian architecture, heritage conservation, tourism, and the social history of drinking establishments in Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3B7 - This image shows a chalkboard A-frame sign placed on a pedestrian pavement outside a bar, using humour and irony to attract attention. The sign initially advertises Free cocktails and topless bartenders in bold handwritten lettering, before undercutting the claim with the phrase false advertising at the bottom. The joke relies on deliberate misdirection, a familiar style of British pub and bar humour designed to stop passers-by and provoke a smile.
The sign is painted in contrasting white chalk on a dark background and framed by a turquoise-painted wooden A-board, giving it a casual, informal appearance typical of independent bars and pubs. The surrounding pavement and shopfronts suggest a busy urban street, likely in a town or city centre with foot traffic and nightlife activity.
Such novelty signage is commonly used as a low-cost marketing tactic within the hospitality sector, blending comedy, irony, and street-level advertising to engage potential customers. The image captures a light-hearted moment of everyday urban culture, reflecting how humour is often used in public spaces to cut through advertising fatigue and create a sense of personality for bars and pubs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RPCFM3 - The Three Pigeons is a traditional English Pub situated on the top of Guildford's High street, just in front of the Holy Trinity church.
Guildford is an historic and tourist town, offering a large number of shopping outlets and the Three Pigeons sits right in the middle of it.
The Three Pigeons has stood here since the middle of the 18th century - a fire badly damaged it in 1916, fortunately it was rebuilt two years later. The design of the new frontage was inspired by a late 17th century house on Oxford's high Street and like many buildings on Guildford's ancient high street, it is reputed to be haunted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64T7M - This photograph shows the exterior of Ye Olde John O'Gaunt, a long-established public house located at 53 Market Street in Lancaster city centre. The pub's traditional frontage features painted timberwork, decorative stained glass windows, and prominent gold lettering, marking it out as a character building within the historic streetscape of Lancaster.
The pub is named after John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and one of the most powerful figures in fourteenth-century England. As the fourth son of King Edward III, John of Gaunt gave his name to the Duchy of Lancaster, which remains closely associated with the city. Pubs bearing his name are found across England, reflecting his enduring place in national and regional history.
Ye Olde John O'Gaunt has served generations of locals and visitors and forms part of Lancaster's rich pub heritage, linked to the city's role as a historic county town, port, and centre of trade. Market Street itself lies close to other significant civic and commercial buildings, reinforcing the pub's role as a social hub within the urban fabric.
The image captures everyday life outside the pub, with people gathered at the entrance and window, illustrating the continued social function of traditional British pubs in town centres. Photographed in daylight, the scene is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, historic inns, Lancaster heritage, and the lived character of English market towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNYF - Why is The Vines on Lime Street known as 'The Big House'?
One of city's oldest and most popular pubs never goes by its real name
Taking up a huge chunk of the corner of Lime Street and Copperas Hill, The Big House' is one of the city's most recognisable boozers.
The Vines - to use its official name - is the sister pub of the Philharmonic and is on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub was built a whopping 150 years ago by Albert B Vines. In 1907, Walkers took over and rebuilt the pub into an ornate style.
Nowadays, it is known for good beer, live music and karaoke.
But why is it referred to as The Big House?
Echo readers James Parr said: I think it's because it used to be a jail. I remember one of my dad's mates telling me that.
It's been a gin palace and an old billiards room - could it have once been a prison, too?
We spoke to one of the managers at the Vines, Ron Taylor. He said: I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I think it's just called the Big House because it's... big.

Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 18541944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for £4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for £1 million

The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Liverpool has plenty of links to The Beatles from The Cavern Club to The Casbah Coffee Club.
But there are some places in the city that have connections to the famous Fab Four which are lesser-known.
One of those places is Ye Cracke, hidden down a side street off Hope Street, on Rice Street.
Landlady of Ye Cracke, Zaidia Naif, told the ECHO: It's funny because a lot of local Liverpool people can't find the pub but The Beatles fans from as far as Mexico find it with no problem.
Obviously the pub has a big tourist pull because of the Beatles and its connection to John Lennon.
I have known fans to come as far as Japan, Australia, Canada and a lot from America.
Ye Cracke may be a seemingly normal, local boozer to many but to tourists it's known for being John Lennon's favourite watering hole.
When attending art school in Liverpool, former bartenders claim Lennon would drink Black Velvet, a cocktail made from Guinness and on top of sparkling wine.
He also took his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, on their first date after meeting her at a college dance.
Even to this day, a plaque can be found on the wall of the pub, commemorating an occasion in 1960 when Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe, Bill Harry and Rod Murray attended the pub and formed a band called The Dissenters over a beer.

Gambling Commission calls for pub industry to take faster action to prevent under 18s accessing gaming machines in pubs
18 October 2019
A review of pubs in England and Wales has shown that 84% of them are failing to prevent under 18-year-olds from playing Category C gaming machines, also known as fruit machines.
Local authorities have primary responsibility for regulating these machines and businesses are responsible for ensuring that they are compliant in checking age verification. Over the last 12 months the Gambling Commission has worked with local authorities and local police to test compliance with laws in place to protect children from the risks gambling can pose.
Children are not permitted to play Category C gaming machines in pubs. Staff are expected to stop children playing on the machines and there should be clear signage indicating the age restriction.
This follows a test sample taken in 2018 which found that 88% of pubs in England failed to prevent children accessing 18+ gaming machines.
The findings suggest that the rules in place around these machines are still not being appropriately enforced and many employees are still unaware of the restrictions.
Programme Director, Helen Rhodes said: The pub industry must accelerate action to enforce these rules. Pubs must take age verification on machines as seriously as they do for alcohol sales, and they risk losing their entitlement to offer machines if they do not.
Adding: 'The results last year were extremely disappointing and we have supported local authorities in their action to raise standards. This includes working with the providers of training to the pub industry to emphasise the legal requirements in training materials, as well as with the Home Office to work towards including materials on gambling in pubs in the curriculum for the personal licence holder

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9K - Sitting sweetly on the bank of the River Medlock, just up the road from Oxford Road, the Lass O' Gowrie is an ancient and venerable Irish (but originally Scottish) pub and Manchester landmark, appearing on maps as early as 1844, back when it stood next to the Garratt Cotton Mill. Back then it was surrounded by hardcore slums which are now modern housing for a modern Manchester.
Complete with original tilework and fittings, the Lass sees a cheerful and diverse crowd on Fridays and Saturdays. It's very popular for post-work drinks or as a staging post on your way to Canal Street or the Northern Quarter.
One of the Lass O' Gowrie's unique features is its balcony-based smoking area, built out over the river below (and well-secured with high walls, so don't worry about stumbling). There's something very special about this particular slice of the city, with the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel off to the north, the opposite balcony of Joshua Brooks just to your east, and the pleasant sounds of the River Medlock filling the evening.
What's on the tap? Well, first and foremost the answer is Guinness, and that's what we recommend to be in keeping with the theme. But you should also check out the various craft beers on the list, like Tollgate Brewery's Belmorado pale ale. Guest beers circulate through the tap month by month, so there's always something new to try. The Lass O' Gowrie can also offer a selection of jolly bar snacks for all you pork scratching aficionados out there.
Listing NGR: SJ8431397523 - As it's surrounded by exciting developments like Circle Square, the Lass O' Gowrie caters to a diverse crowd of students, professionals, and tourists, so whoever you are, you're bound to find a warm welcome in the pub's surprisingly large interior.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9T - Sitting sweetly on the bank of the River Medlock, just up the road from Oxford Road, the Lass O' Gowrie is an ancient and venerable Irish (but originally Scottish) pub and Manchester landmark, appearing on maps as early as 1844, back when it stood next to the Garratt Cotton Mill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WYK - This image shows a close-up detail of a stained glass pub window bearing the words Smoke Room , formed in leaded lettering against amber-coloured glass. Such signage was common in traditional English pubs, where drinking spaces were historically divided into areas such as public bars, saloons, tap rooms, and smoke rooms.
The smoke room was typically a more comfortable or enclosed area where patrons could smoke pipes or cigarettes, reflecting social customs of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although smoking is now prohibited in enclosed public spaces in the UK, the architectural features associated with these rooms remain an important part of pub heritage.
Decorative stained and leaded glass windows are characteristic of historic British pub interiors, combining function, privacy, and visual identity. In cities like York, many pubs retain these features as part of their listed or conservation-area status.
Photographed to emphasise texture, lettering, and glasswork, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, social history, heritage architecture, interior design, and traditional signage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4P - This image shows The Kings Arms, a well-known traditional public house located beside the River Ouse in the historic centre of York. The pub is a familiar landmark on King's Staith and is popular with both residents and visitors, particularly during warm summer weather when outdoor seating is in use.
The Kings Arms occupies a characterful historic building and is closely associated with riverside life in York. Its proximity to the river means it is also known for periodic flooding, an issue that has become part of its local identity and media profile over the years.
In this scene, people are gathered outside the pub enjoying drinks and conversation under clear blue skies, reflecting the social role of English pubs as informal community meeting places. The visible pub sign reinforces its identity as a long-established and recognisable venue within the city.
With York's historic riverside architecture and pedestrian activity in the background, the image captures everyday leisure and tourism in one of England's most visited historic cities. It is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, urban leisure, tourism, riverside life, and summer social scenes in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X6W - This image shows the exterior of the Stone Roses Bar, a well-known music-themed bar located on King Street in York. The venue is named after the influential British band The Stone Roses and reflects the continuing cultural legacy of late-1980s and early-1990s indie and Madchester music.
The red brick façade is decorated with distinctive signage, posters, and window graphics referencing British alternative music culture. The building's historic urban fabric contrasts with the modern graphic artwork and band imagery, linking York's traditional streetscape with contemporary nightlife and popular music heritage.
Bars such as this play an important role in city-centre evening economies, attracting locals, students, and visitors interested in alternative music scenes and themed venues. The Stone Roses Bar is particularly associated with indie, Britpop, and guitar-based music, often hosting DJs and events that celebrate British rock history.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents the venue as part of York's wider cultural and nightlife landscape. It is well suited to editorial use covering British music culture, urban leisure, themed bars, tourism, and the influence of iconic bands on local identity and commercial spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J7A0 - Documentary stock photograph shows Amans Indian Restaurant at 33 Walton Road, Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire, in the heart of South Warrington's busy food and drink district. The image records a prominent black-and-white half-timbered corner building with red brick lower walls, dormer windows, restaurant frontage, neighbouring estate agency signage and a wide pavement on Walton Road. The overcast sky and dark clouds give the scene a moody, realistic high-street feel, while the clear shopfront and address context make it useful for editorial use on local restaurants, curry houses, independent hospitality, suburban dining and evening economy stories. Stockton Heath has become one of Warrington's best-known eating-out areas, with restaurants, bars and cafes clustered around Walton Road, London Road, Victoria Square and the village centre. Amans is listed by local and food directories at 33 Walton Road, WA4 6NJ, and CAMRA describes the venue as an Indian restaurant with takeaway service, noting its previous name as Indish. The official Amans Stockton Heath website promotes modern Indian dining in the heart of Warrington, with a menu covering appetisers, tandoori dishes, biriyani specials, seafood, vegetarian choices, chef's signature dishes and takeaway food. This image can illustrate the pressures of the UK hospitality sector, restaurant branding, leisure-led high streets, curry culture, takeaway dining, local business, consumer spending, food delivery, nightlife, tourism and suburban regeneration. The distinctive mock-Tudor frontage also gives the photograph architectural value, showing how characterful commercial premises are adapted for modern restaurant use. It would suit features about Warrington, Cheshire villages, South Warrington lifestyle, dining destinations, independent restaurants, ethnic food businesses, high-street change, commercial property and the continued importance of restaurants as anchors for local centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J7A5 - Documentary stock photograph shows Victoria Square on London Road in Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire, a prominent South Warrington dining and leisure location. The image looks across the A49 London Road junction towards the red brick restaurant buildings, with traffic lights, road signs, pavement seating, street furniture and pedestrians giving the scene a clear sense of local high-street activity. The visible London Road A49 sign, the corner position and the recognisable red brick frontage make it useful for editorial use on Stockton Heath village, Warrington restaurants, suburban dining, hospitality, leisure development, town-centre regeneration and the changing use of British high streets. Victoria Square is promoted as a restaurant and retail development, with Piccolino describing its Stockton Heath site as a fixture of the local dining scene, including an open kitchen, cocktail bar and alfresco terrace. The development has also been described by Williams Tarr as an award-winning 30,000 square foot landmark restaurant and retail scheme, involving facade retention of the original early 1900s building and used by Warrington Council as an exemplar regeneration project. That combination of retained historic character and modern hospitality use gives the image added value for stories about adaptive reuse, conservation-led redevelopment, food and drink businesses, local economies and affluent commuter suburbs. The overcast but bright daylight, patches of blue sky, red brickwork and open junction create a practical editorial image for illustrating South Warrington lifestyle, Cheshire dining, restaurant footfall, evening economy, hospitality recovery, planning, commercial property, traffic and public realm issues. It could also support travel, local news, business, real estate, retail, leisure and tourism features about Stockton Heath as one of Warrington's best-known suburban village centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P042 - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1G1X - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TM - Arkell's Brewery was established in Swindon, England by John Arkell in 1843, and has been owned by members of the Arkell family since its establishment. It is Swindon's oldest company, built initially on the massive expansion of Swindon in the Victorian era with the arrival of the railways and the decision by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to site the Great Western Railway Works in Swindon in 1841.
Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

A very fine pub in central Liverpool which is one to compare with other excellent Heritage pubs on Merseyside - the Stork
in Birkenhead, the Prince Arthur
in Liverpool and the Edinburgh
in Crosby
Like them it is a Victorian building (in this case of c.1865) re-modelled about in the early 20th century. They all share corner sites with the public bar occupying the angle and surrounded by an L-shaped corridor. All too have beautiful tiled dados in their corridors dating from Edwardian re-modelling schemes (as seen in our picture). A further similarity is the way the corridor works to provide a drinking area.
Discovery of the documents submitted to the licensing justices enabled former licensee, John O'Dowd, to trace the evolution of the pub to its present form. Back in 1903 a plan shows the public bar laid out as it is now. There was a snug behind it in the heart of the building and left of this, and on the site of the present toilets, a public room labelled parlour'. Then in 1915 the Lion expanded by taking in the building next door at 28 Tithebarn Street also a licensed premises. This enabled the L-shaped corridor to be created round the public bar and the formation of two rooms behind this - a news room in the newly acquired area (the name still survives in the window glass) and a lounge where the skylight is today. Then in 1967, when pubs everywhere were being opened up, plans were drawn up to remove the walls to the corridor from these rooms. These were duly implemented and the corner entrance was blocked. (hence the pub does not merit entry in the Part One of the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. In 1979 they added glazed partitions, one outside the gents and one on the right as you enter the news room.
The porch on Moorfields side has mosaic floor and one tiled wall from floor to ceiling.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ4B1 - The Golden Cross is a Grade II listed public house at the junction of Customhouse Street and Hayes Bridge Road in the centre of Cardiff, Wales. The current building dates from 1903 and is noted for its distinctive ceramic tiling.
History
A pub has existed on the site since 1849, originally named the Shields and Newcastle Tavern. It was renamed the Castle Inn in 1855 and assumed its present name in 1863. The Cardiff historian Brian Lee has said the Golden Cross developed a reputation as the smartest brothel in town in the 19th century. Around 1903/4 it was rebult in its current form for Brains Brewery.
The Golden Cross is alleged to be the site of a fight involving a young Rocky Marciano, who was stationed in Wales during his time in the United States Army during World War 2. Also during the war, the fascist leader Oswald Mosley attempted to hold a meeting at the pub but violent opposition forced him to return to London.
The pub was given listed status by Cadw in May 1975, but despite this it was threatened with demolition in 1979 as part of a road-widening scheme. However it was reprieved after a campaign led by the South Wales Echo. In 2010 it was listed by CAMRA as one of their 10 most unspoilt pubs by the CAMRA Pub Heritage Group and is listed on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The Golden Cross has become a popular gay friendly pub, with regular drag acts and entertainment. It was voted in 2004 as the best gay pub in the UK. The pub remains a tied house of the Brains Brewery.
Architecture
Tiled panel showing Cardiff's Old Town Hall and the statue of Lord Bute
CAMRA's Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors describes the Golden Cross as the most spectacularly decorated of any in Wales.
The bar tiles, featuring distinctive corner grotesques, were designed by Craven Dunnill of Shropshire. The interior has several decorative pictorial panels of tiles that depict Cardiff Castle, Brains Brewery in 1890, and Cardiff's Old Town hall

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ4BN - The Golden Cross is a Grade II listed public house at the junction of Customhouse Street and Hayes Bridge Road in the centre of Cardiff, Wales.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3FJ - Slug and Lettuce is a chain of bars that operate in the United Kingdom, with a large number located in London and South East England. As of 2017, there are a total of 70 outlets. Hugh Corbett opened the first Slug and Lettuce in Islington in 1985. He attempted to enhance the public house environment, at a time when standards were often low.
The bars are designed for a youthful clientele, and aim to attract an equal number of men and women with female-friendly designs. The chain has remained relevant by continually re-inventing itself for the contemporary marketplace. The chain has gone through a number of owners throughout its history, and is currently owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, based in Luton, Bedfordshire.
History
Hugh Corbett, an entrepreneur with a background in the hotel industry, opened The Slug and Lettuce pub on Islington Green, North London in 1985. At the time, Islington was becoming increasingly gentrified due to its proximity to the City of London financial district. Corbett owned a small number of pubs, which he rechristened with humorous or nonsensical names, with the effect of differentiating them from competitors. His pubs had the then notable differential of stripped out carpets and enlarged windows so that people could see inside from the street.[12] Corbett listed his business in 1989 as Fast Forward, by which time it was a nine-strong chain. In 1990 Roger Protz identified the group as an imitation of David Bruce's Firkin chain pubs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00AE - Yorkshire Cheapest Pint To Rise By A Quid Now Lockdown Is Over
We've all enjoyed the pubs reopening this month. Whether you went out, or you stayed at home and decided to see what happens, it's nice to see a little bit of normality getting back into society although, it does seem like this is the calm before the storm.
The biggest question now? Whether our beloved locals can survive through this turbulent time, which is expected to see people spending much less now that jobs are being axed and workers continue to live off the furlough scheme.
One brewery that has felt the pull is Yorkshire's oldest, Sam Smith. Founded in 1758, Sam Smith's pubs are the most traditional pubs you'll find in England. They like to stick to traditions such as no phone, swearing and a big push on a social and fun time that pubs have always been focused on.
One of their biggest pushes, and one that Yorkshire folk have always enjoyed, is the fact that they've managed to keep the price of a pint as one of the cheapest in the country without skimping on quality.
But even they've struggled post-lockdown, and have announced that they'll be hiking up the prices of some of their favourite beers by as much as £1. Taddy Lager will rise from £2.30 to £3.40 and their Soveriegn Bitter price will go from £2.04 to £3.04. You can hear the Yorkshireman's cry already Hooow muuchh?'.
Reports from The Sun show a Sam Smith's landlord saying: It's a heck of a price hike I don't know how I'm going to explain it to the customers. It's not going to make reopening after the lockdown any easier. The report also shows that Sam Smith pubs won't be the only ones implementing price changes, with Wetherspoons pubs set to be making the change too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02HX - Sam's was also opened by Thomas Studd, named for his son. Opening on Market Street in 1872, it moved to its current premises, on a backstreet just off Chapel Walks, in the mid-twentieth century. Publicity material from the 1960s reads: In a world of change, we at Sam's Chop House have preserved the best
the quality of food remains constant
the hospitality is just as warm as it was 100 years ago.' But times did change, and after being run as a pub for a while, Sam's closed down in the '90s. It reopened as a second incarnation of a Victorian chop house, with a lovingly recreated interior, in 2001.
Fun fact: Sam's artist-in-residence was Lowry
Head in at any hour and youíll see someone in a rumpled suit, waistcoat and trilby propping up the bar. With one difference: the figure has been dead for 43 years. It's artist LS Lowry, Samís most famous patron, immortalised in brass. A regular for many years, he often gave staff his drawings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02FA - Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1 May 1769 14 September 1852) was a Anglo-Irish statesman, soldier, and Tory politician who was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain, serving twice as prime minister of the United Kingdom. He is among the commanders who won and ended the Napoleonic Wars when the Seventh Coalition defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Wellesley was born in Dublin into the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. He was commissioned as an ensign in the British Army in 1787, serving in Ireland as aide-de-camp to two successive lords lieutenant of Ireland. He was also elected as a member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons. He was a colonel by 1796 and saw action in the Netherlands and in India, where he fought in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War at the Battle of Seringapatam. He was appointed governor of Seringapatam and Mysore in 1799 and, as a newly appointed major-general, won a decisive victory over the Maratha Confederacy at the Battle of Assaye in 1803.
Wellesley rose to prominence as a general during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, and was promoted to the rank of field marshal after leading the allied forces to victory against the French Empire at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. Following Napoleon's exile in 1814, he served as the ambassador to France and was granted a dukedom. During the Hundred Days in 1815, he commanded the allied army which, together with a Prussian Army under Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Wellington's battle record is exemplary
he ultimately participated in some 60 battles during the course of his military career.

There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. The well actually pre-dates the existing building at about 150 years old, but is now fitted with walkover glass and illuminated from the inside. A large outside eating and drinking patio is located behind the pub next to the large car park. In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. mashing at the top, boiling in the middle, fermentation and racking at the bottom. Until 2006, the brewing process was powered by steam. Beer is still delivered in the village by horse-drawn dray.

The row metadata places the subject at 21 Westland St, Londonderry, United Kingdom, BT48 9JE. The spreadsheet date indicates 16 June 2017, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows Derry, city, Londonderry, Troubles, happy, DerryHappy, #DerryHappy, Off Licence, with search-relevant terms including Derry, city, Londonderry, Troubles, happy, DerryHappy, #DerryHappy, Off Licence, bar, pub, the, Bogside, Inn, development. Hospitality images often work beyond simple venue illustration, because pubs and bars speak to tourism, music, night-time economies, independent trade and changing social habits. Derry, also known as Londonderry, is deeply associated with civil rights history, the Troubles, murals, contested identity and peace-era tourism. Bogside street scenes have strong documentary value when handled with careful, non-sensational context. Pub and bar imagery can illustrate the changing British and Irish hospitality trade, real-ale culture, night-time economies, independent businesses, tourism districts, licensing, social life and the pressure on high streets and leisure spending. It would suit editorial features, local news reporting, public policy articles, web explainers, travel pieces and business commentary where a real place or recognisable everyday subject is needed rather than a staged studio concept. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4MNN - Half Hangit' Maggie
Maggie Dickson lived in the Early Eighteenth century as a fish hawker and would certainly have remained an anonymous figure had she not been the subject of a public hanging.
Her misfortune began when her husband deserted her in 1723 forcing her to leave the city and move further south to Kelso near the Scottish Borders. Here, she worked for an inkeeper in return for basic lodgings.
Soon after she started an affair with the Innkeeper's son which led to her becoming pregnant, not wanting the innkeeper to discover this as it would surely lead to her instant dismissal she concealed her pregnancy as long as possible. However the baby was born prematurely and died within a few days of being born. Still hiding the baby's existance she planned to put the baby into the River Tweed, but couldn't bring herself to and finally left it on the riverbank.
The same day the baby was discovered and traced to Maggie. She was charged under the contravention of the Concealment of Pregnancy Act and she was taken back to Edinburgh for Trial and execution the latter taking place in public in the Grasssmarket on the 2nd September 1724.
After the hanging she was pronounced dead and her body was bound for Musselburgh where she was to be buried, however the journey was interrupted by a knocking and banging from within the wooden coffin.
The lid was lifted to the sight of Maggie, quite alive. The law saw it as God's will and she was freed to live for a further forty years. She became something of a local celebrity and the locals gave her the nickname 'Half Hangit' Maggie.'
Some said that she had seduced and manipulated the ropemaker, to engineer a weaker noose.
A pub in the Grassmarket is named Maggie Dickson's after her memory, which means her name and story will be remembered for some time yet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5B - There has been a pub called The Red Lion on this site ever since 1788. The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head. In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries. Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer AnheuserBusch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.
The Boddingtons two bees logo was introduced in 1900. The bees are a symbol of Manchester, from a time when it was a hive of industry, but the two bees also represent a pun on the company name of Boddingtons Breweries.
Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. The tagline from 1987 until 1991 was If you don't get Boddies, you'll just get bitter. Under Whitbread's custodianship the comedian Frankie Howerd fronted the campaign in a series of six television advertisements which mainly aired in the North West in 19901991. Lowe Howard-Spink was the advertising agency responsible for the Howerd advertisements.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H2MAXX - This documentary stock photograph shows Dirty Dicks 18th Cent Pub, Liverpool Street/ Bishopsgate, London, UK. The image records Liverpool Street Station and its surrounding office district, making it useful for editorial features on rail commuters, office development, financial services, railway regeneration and the changing City fringe. The City of London and Liverpool Street area is a dense mix of railway infrastructure, Underground stations, offices, historic streets, pubs, retail units and constant pedestrian movement, so even a modest street or station view carries strong relevance for stories about commuting, working life, commercial property, transport investment and the post-pandemic future of the office. The caption and visible detail suggest readable signage, giving the photograph a practical, real-world quality that works for news, business and travel use. It can support articles about the Square Mile, banking, insurance, office rents, rail usage, Tube crowding, cycling, public art, tourism, station redevelopment, after-work hospitality and London as both a workplace and visitor destination. Search-friendly composite terms include City of London commuters, Liverpool Street railway station, Bank Underground station, Cornhill financial district, London office economy, Square Mile public realm, London 2012 Olympic legacy and central London transport hub. The photograph can also illustrate wider themes of regeneration, heritage, carbon-conscious travel, pedestrian movement, evening economy, retail footfall and how transport nodes shape urban property values. Its editorial strength lies in being specific enough for captions and broad enough for business, transport, finance, urban planning, tourism and local history stories. The image is also useful where editors need a recognisable London environment without relying on the most overused postcard views.

The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5695317409 - 'One of Northern Ireland's best-known pubs, it is a rare and classic example of a Victorian gin palace. Its one of my favourites, similar to the Phil' in Liverpool and one more reason to consider staying at the famous Europa hotel over the road.
It was opened as The Railway Tavern, as the Great Victoria St train station is just opposite. The pub was then bought by Michael Flanagan. His son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978 the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a \u00a3400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of \u00a3500,000. As a NT member myself it would be nice to get a free pint on production of my NT membership card. I might take that up with them.
The pub was used as a location in David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998), a film following Colin Bateman's character Dan Starkey through a web of political intrigue and Irish sectarian violence. I would fully recommend the book and many more of his books in the same style.
The exterior is decorated in polychromatic tiles. This includes a mosaic of a Crown on the floor of the entrance. The interior is also decorated with complex mosaics of tiles. The red granite topped bar is of an altar style, with a heated footrest underneath and is lit by gas lamps on the highly decorative carved ceilings.
The Crown has ten booths, or snugs. Built to accommodate the pub's more reserved customers during the austere Victorian period, the snugs feature the original gun metal plates for striking matches and an antique bell system for alerting staff. Extra privacy was then afforded by the pub's etched and stained glass windows which feature painted shells, fairies, pineapples, fleurs-de-lis and clowns.
This has been formed from 29 images and the original size is 17000x7000 pixels.

This set of shots, joined in a Hockney stylee was taken just after my breakfast. I have always been a fan of his photo stage, when he did many 'joiner' panoramas. It inspired me to have a go and the fascination in takeing something that no one had ever taken or visualised before has always excited me. So no apologies for rough edges(!).
The Fullers brewery write up describes it as 'this olde worlde property is full of period features, character and charm. All 12 bedrooms are stylish and furnished to an excellent standard. We take great care in choosing our beds and bed linen, so that our guests have a comfortable and relaxing sleep'.
It goes on 'The restaurant enjoys an excellent reputation for good home-cooked food, using the finest local produce, good wines and Fuller's award winning beers. The Fisherman's Haunt is close to the New Forest, within easy reach of the Christchurch and Bournemouth areas and is ideal for the country lover and angler, with the River Avon being close by'.
Being a fan of Fullers beers I have stayed there a few times while in the area, although the Woolpack just a short walk towards Ringwood is my usual choice for food. The 'Haunt is doing more local food and food sourced from local New Forest ingredients now I have noticed, which can only be a good thing.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4399167540 - 'An excellent country pub for food near Sopley Mill and church. Here captured at dusk in a cold february.
It is thatched with real fires and has a large garden and dining area. It is a 17th Century building situated between Ringwood and Christchurch about five miles from the famous Ringwood Brewery. It was originally a private house, and became an inn in 1725.
Sopley village was a centre of smuggling. The smugglers boats were heaved up from the River Avon to the Woolpack, where pack horses were waiting to take the goods to the New Forest and onward to the centres of Winchester and London.
The pub name probably originated because the vicar, the Rev. James Willis, was a keen sheep farmer and took a major part in distributing his Merino sheep, of which he had over a thousand throughout the district. These are a small, short-woolled breed, prized for their fine wool. As IOW Ray mentions below too, this pub sign was painted by local Sign Artist, Peter J Oldreive.
If you are in the area, drop in for a satisfying pint.

The image captures the lively evening atmosphere of one of Manchester city centre's best known LGBTQ+ nightlife areas, where Canal Street, the Rochdale Canal and nearby streets are associated with queer culture, Pride events, cabaret, bars, clubs, restaurants and tourism. Via Manchester is listed at 28-30 Canal Street, Manchester M1 3EZ, and its own venue information describes it as a friendly local LGBTQ+ bar with live entertainment seven days a week. The venue also describes itself as open since 1995 and as the grande dame of Canal Street, a long standing part of the Gay Village's entertainment scene. This editorial image is useful for coverage of Manchester Pride, LGBTQ+ travel, nightlife, city breaks, inclusive tourism, cabaret venues, evening economy, urban leisure, hospitality, queer history and the cultural identity of Manchester. The visible VIA signs, colourful rainbow-style lighting and twilight street scene give the photograph strong search value for articles about Canal Street, the Gay Village, Pride weekends, LGBTQIA+ venues, night-time economy, bars and live entertainment in North West England. The picture also works for broader features on city centre regeneration, tourism marketing, weekend breaks, hospitality recovery, pub and bar culture, Manchester after dark and the importance of LGBTQ+ venues as social and cultural anchors. The mix of deep blue dusk sky, bright coloured lights, brick architecture and blurred passers-by creates a sense of movement and excitement while keeping the venue frontage as the main documentary subject. Editorial use should recognise that the venue name and visible signage may be protected branding, so the image is best suited to news, travel, culture, nightlife and documentary contexts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK2AX3 - The tiny Liverpool city pub Ye Cracke that was loved by Beatle John Lennon, The Beatle was known to even take girls on dates to the pub

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60Y2 - There has been a building on our site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings itself is not until 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.
