Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EX1REP - Gold-branded electronic fruit machine inside the Athletic Arms, the historic Edinburgh pub widely known as Diggers. The brightly illuminated cabinet displays a £100 jackpot, a Penguins Go Wild game screen and a selection of colourful gambling titles, including Gold, Wild Gold, Pots of Gold, Rainbow Riches and Duck-themed games. The machine carries Fair City Amusements branding and stands against the pub's dark timber panelling beside a small table.
The Athletic Arms opened in 1897 and occupies 13 Angle Park Terrace in Edinburgh. Its familiar nickname, Diggers, is linked to its position between two graveyards and the tradition of gravediggers visiting the pub after work. The venue is also known for cask ale, an extensive whisky range and its proximity to Tynecastle Park and Murrayfield Stadium.
Fruit machines remain a familiar feature of some British pubs, combining flashing lights, themed graphics, sound effects and cash prizes in a setting where customers may also be drinking alcohol. The prominent £100 jackpot and repeated gold imagery are designed around the prospect of an instant win, while the range of games encourages continued play and repeated spending.
The photograph can illustrate pub entertainment, licensed gambling, gaming-machine revenue and the social normalisation of low-stake betting. It is also relevant to coverage of gambling harms, compulsive behaviour and addiction risk. Gaming machines provide rapid and repeated opportunities to stake money, and losses can accumulate despite the language of prizes, jackpots and striking gold.
The scene records a traditional Edinburgh public house alongside a modern electronic gambling product, contrasting Victorian-style wooden surroundings with a vivid digital gaming display. It is suitable for editorial themes involving Scottish pub culture, consumer leisure, gambling regulation, public health, financial harm and responsible gambling awareness.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM981K - A documentary, street-level view of the Arden Arms on Millgate in Stockport, photographed to emphasise the pub's traditional branding and heritage character. The image centres on the exterior signage: a prominent hanging sign reading ARDEN ARMS and a matching illuminated box sign mounted on the brick façade, both designed for high visibility to pedestrians and passing traffic. The red brickwork, period proportions, and tidy frontage details suggest a long-established town-centre pub, with hanging flower baskets adding a softer, welcoming touch against the harder urban materials.
Seasonal cues come through in the crisp light and the trees visible beyond the building, which show late-season colour and bare branches typical of late autumn or winter. The sky is clear and bright, producing clean edges and strong contrast on the brickwork and sign frames, and giving the scene that cold-weather clarity you often get on a dry day in Greater Manchester. The composition works well as a clear location identifier because the pub name is readable and the building is photographed in a recognisable, matter-of-fact documentary style rather than as a staged hospitality interior.
Editorially, the photo is useful for stories about British pub culture, real ale and cask beer, independent hospitality, and the survival of historic pubs in modern high streets. The Arden Arms is also a listed heritage asset in Stockport, so the image can support coverage about local history, conservation, and traditional buildings still in everyday commercial use. It is equally suitable for travel and lifestyle pieces on Stockport town centre, pub trails, and authentic Northern England streetscapes where pubs remain part of the social fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRA - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 18 May 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honoré. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. Stark notes the significance of this album, as Pop's title was inspired by Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot about the spiritually sensitive epileptic prince who was driven mad

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RHH6HB - Among parish churches, it is the third tallest in England. But nothing survives above ground of the original building (a Saxon wooden church), and only the chancel and crypt remain from its successor, the first stone building, which was built in 1354.
Shelled and badly damaged by the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War of the 17th century, the tower of that church had to be rebuilt in 1696, and the nave was rebuilt in l770.
The south aisle was added in the early 19th century, and the whole building was restored between 1859 and 1867, when the present distinctive spire was added. Inside, galleries in the aisles contain pews with doors, and some of the stained glass is by AWN Pugin.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGPNAD - The Red Lion Joseph Holt pub on Bury New Road in Prestwich, Greater Manchester, photographed in bright sunshine with outdoor tables, brick frontage, hanging bunting and traditional pub signage visible. The image shows the large red brick pub building at 398 Bury New Road, a prominent local landmark in Prestwich village and a Joseph Holt public house with strong connections to the local drinking culture around Mark E Smith and The Fall. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of Manchester music heritage, post-punk history, pub culture, northern high streets, Joseph Holt Brewery, traditional locals, live music, beer gardens, pub crawls and cultural tourism in Greater Manchester. Mark E Smith, frontman and permanent driving force of The Fall, grew up around Prestwich and the band was formed locally in 1976, making pubs, shops, streets and landmarks around Bury New Road part of the informal geography of Fall fan pilgrimage. Local writing on Bury New Road notes that Smith drank in pubs along Prestwich village, including The Red Lion, while fan walking guides connect nearby locations with The Fall photographs and Mark E Smith stories. The photograph has added value because the Red Lion is not just a generic pub exterior, but part of a wider Prestwich music trail that also includes the Mark E Smith mural at Chips at No8, local streets, former band haunts and places associated with the band's uncompromising northern identity. Visible details such as the Joseph Holt lettering, red brick elevations, arched doorway, outside benches, chalkboard, railings, pavement, blue sky and strong summer light give the image a clear documentary sense of place. It can illustrate features on The Fall, Mark E Smith, Manchester alternative music, independent pubs, brewery estates, Prestwich regeneration, pub heritage, fan culture, music tourism and the role of ordinary local pubs in shaping cultural memory, alongside wider stories about community, place and northern identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YTG - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CR - This image shows an ornate stained glass panel depicting the Welsh red dragon, known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch, a powerful national symbol of Wales. The dragon is rendered in vivid shades of red and orange with raised wings and an alert stance, set against a background of green and yellow glass, colours traditionally associated with Welsh identity. The stained glass is housed within a stone arched frame, suggesting the interior of a historic or traditionally styled bar or pub in Cardiff.
The craftsmanship highlights fine leadwork and textured glass, typical of decorative stained glass used in heritage hospitality interiors across Wales. The dragon's posture, claws raised and tail curled, echoes medieval and Celtic imagery long associated with Welsh folklore, resistance, and national pride.
The surrounding stonework and subdued interior lighting imply a historic building or one designed to evoke heritage character. The glass appears to be illuminated from behind, either by daylight or internal lighting, enhancing the saturated colours and giving the dragon a dramatic, almost heraldic presence.
Such imagery is commonly found in Cardiff city-centre pubs and bars that celebrate local culture and history, blending traditional Welsh symbolism with modern hospitality use. The image reflects the enduring visibility of national identity in everyday urban spaces and the continued role of pubs and bars as cultural as well as social landmarks in Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CY - This image shows the former Royal Hotel building on St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre, a prominent Victorian-era structure that once operated as one of the city's notable hotels and now houses the Slug & Lettuce bar and restaurant. The stone-fronted facade, with its symmetrical window arrangement and classical detailing, reflects Cardiff's late nineteenth-century commercial architecture and the city's expansion during the industrial and dockland boom years.
The words ROYAL HOTEL remain clearly visible across the upper facade, preserving the building's historic identity despite its modern hospitality use. At street level, contemporary branding and glazing for Slug & Lettuce sit within the original architectural framework, illustrating the adaptive reuse of historic city-centre buildings common across UK high streets.
The photograph appears to have been taken in daylight during warmer months, with people casually dressed and moving along St Mary Street. The pavement looks wet, suggesting recent rain, with subtle reflections adding texture to the urban scene. Overhead tram or utility wires are visible, reinforcing the dense city-centre environment.
St Mary Street is one of Cardiff's principal pedestrian routes, linking shopping, nightlife, and tourism areas, and this building forms part of a continuous historic streetscape that blends heritage architecture with contemporary leisure and retail uses. The image captures both Cardiff's architectural past and its present-day role as a lively capital city destination.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RECE2C - Edinburgh distilleries: Historic moment for £12m Port of Leith Distillery as attraction prepares to open
New Edinburgh distillery promises to be the biggest tourist attraction built in Leith in decades'
An innovative new Edinburgh distillery is marking an historic moment as it prepares to open. Stills have been installed at Port of Leith Distillery the UK's first vertical distillery which has been described as the biggest tourist attraction to be built in Leith for decades. With a projected 25,000 visitors expected in its first year, the distillery is due to open in summer 2023 at the site of an old biscuit factory.
The installation of the two hand-crafted copper stills (a 7,000 litre wash still and a 5,000 litre spirit still) from The Speyside Copper Works in Elgin is the latest milestone for the £12m nine-storey distillery, which will offer tours and tastings, as well as a top floor mezzanine bar with panoramic views of Leith and wider Edinburgh. Owners say the attraction is creating up to 50 long term local jobs, with the capacity to produce one million bottles of whisky a year, through its energy-saving gravitational distilling system.
Ian Stirling, co-founder of Port of Leith Distillery, said: For much of the 19th and 20th century, Leith was the unofficial capital of Scotch Whisky - making it the perfect place to build a new industrial landmark like the Port of Leith Distillery
an honest and modern piece of architecture that reflects our new and innovative approach to production. Installing our stills brings us one step closer to our summer distillery opening and welcoming tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world to come and experience a UK first.
Port of Leith Distillery is the latest long term investment in Leith by co-owners and lifelong friends Ian Stirling and Paddy Fletcher, following the opening of the new Lind & Lime Gin Distillery in May 2022, a brand they launched in 2018 from an industrial unit.

The hand-written board displays a changing selection of cask and keg beers, with an emphasis on Scottish breweries alongside guest ales from across the wider UK.
Cloisters is particularly known for supporting local and regional brewers, regularly featuring beers from Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Orkney, Aberdeen and the Highlands. The visible selection includes traditional cask ales, modern IPAs, stouts and experimental styles, reflecting the breadth of contemporary Scottish brewing while maintaining a strong connection to classic pub culture.
Photographed indoors under pub lighting, the image documents everyday real-ale culture in Scotland, highlighting the role of independent pubs as curators of local brewing traditions. It is well suited for editorial use relating to beer culture, Scottish food and drink, independent pubs, microbreweries, and urban social life. Breweries :-

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ31B - HMS Birkenhead, also referred to as HM Troopship Birkenhead or Steam Frigate Birkenhead, was one of the first iron-hulled ships built for the Royal Navy. She was designed as a steam frigate, but was converted to a troopship before being commissioned. She was wrecked on 26 February 1852, while transporting troops to Algoa Bay at Danger Point near Gansbaai, 87 miles (140 kilometres) from Cape Town in the Cape Colony. There were not enough serviceable lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm on board, thereby allowing the women and children to board the boats safely and escape the sinking. Only 193 of the estimated 643 people on board survived, and the soldiers' chivalry gave rise to the unofficial women and children first protocol when abandoning ship, while the Birkenhead drill of Rudyard Kipling's poem came to describe courage in face of hopeless circumstances. This mural was painted in appalilng weather conditions in January 2020 by Liverpool artist, Paul Curtis. It is located on the side of Gallagher's Traditional Pub, located in Birkenhead, overlooking the River Mersey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRX - This image shows the exterior of the Barrel Store operated by Wild Card Brewery, located on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. Bold painted lettering on the rendered wall advertises the Barrel Store and highlights the brewery's focus on the retail and manufacture of barrel-aged beer, a specialist area within the UK craft brewing scene.
Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The utilitarian industrial setting contrasts with the growing cultural and social role of craft breweries as community hubs.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London's craft beer movement, independent breweries, small-scale manufacturing, urban regeneration, food and drink culture, and the reuse of industrial estates by creative businesses in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JRC4 - This image shows a clear drinking glass placed on a pub bar counter, repurposed as a tip jar with a handwritten label reading Tips for my new boobs . The deliberately cheeky message uses humour and provocation to encourage customers to leave gratuities, reflecting the informal and often playful culture found in many bars and pubs.
Behind the glass, shelves stocked with spirits and bottles create a familiar hospitality backdrop, while the worn wooden bar surface suggests a well-used, lived-in drinking space. The message is written in marker pen on paper inside the glass, emphasising its improvised, personal nature rather than corporate branding.
The image speaks to wider themes around tipping culture, service industry pay, workplace humour, and body-positive or self-deprecating jokes commonly used by bar staff to engage customers. It also reflects contemporary attitudes to openness, banter, and informal fundraising within hospitality settings.
Photographed indoors under low bar lighting, the image is suitable for editorial use covering nightlife, pubs, hospitality work, tipping culture, humour in the workplace, and social interaction in bars.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PGAYM7 - There has been a building on our site since the 1300s although the first mention of the Kings itself is not until 1639. The Georgian frontage was added in 1753 although the size of the building was reduced in the 1890s when a decline in trade resulted in part of the front being turned into a shop. It wasn't until 1936 that the Kings left private ownership and was bought by the Friary Brewery of Guildford which later became part of Allied Breweries.
We've had a few famous guests over the years including Tsar Peter the Great (who left without paying his bill!) as well as some European royalty who met here in 1814 to discuss post war Europe after the Battle of Trafalgar. Tsar Peter the Great's visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the building which was unveiled in 1998 by the Russian Ambassador to commemorate the tricentenary of the visit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9G - Simple tips for cutting down
Make a plan
Before you start drinking, set a limit on how much you're going to drink.
Set a budget
Only take a fixed amount of money to spend on alcohol.
Let them know
If you let your friends and family know you're cutting down and it's important to you, you could get support from them.
Take it a day at a time
Cut back a little each day. That way, every day you do is a success.
Make it a smaller one
You can still enjoy a drink, but go for smaller sizes. Try bottled beer instead of pints, or a small glass of wine instead of a large one.
Have a lower-strength drink
Cut down the alcohol by swapping strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength (ABV in %). You'll find this information on the bottle.
Stay hydrated
Have a glass of water before you have alcohol and alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks.
Take a break
Have several drink-free days each week.

Back then it was surrounded by hardcore slums which are now modern housing for a modern Manchester.
Complete with original tilework and fittings, the Lass sees a cheerful and diverse crowd on Fridays and Saturdays. It's very popular for post-work drinks or as a staging post on your way to Canal Street or the Northern Quarter.
One of the Lass O' Gowrie's unique features is its balcony-based smoking area, built out over the river below (and well-secured with high walls, so don't worry about stumbling). There's something very special about this particular slice of the city, with the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel off to the north, the opposite balcony of Joshua Brooks just to your east, and the pleasant sounds of the River Medlock filling the evening.
What's on the tap? Well, first and foremost the answer is Guinness, and that's what we recommend to be in keeping with the theme. But you should also check out the various craft beers on the list, like Tollgate Brewery's Belmorado pale ale. Guest beers circulate through the tap month by month, so there's always something new to try. The Lass O' Gowrie can also offer a selection of jolly bar snacks for all you pork scratching aficionados out there.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9X - Liquor (or a spirit) is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. Other terms for liquor include: spirit drink, distilled beverage, spirituous liquor or hard liquor. The distillation process concentrates the liquid to increase its alcohol by volume. As liquors contain significantly more alcohol (ethanol) than other alcoholic drinks, they are considered 'harder'
in North America, the term hard liquor is sometimes used to distinguish distilled alcoholic drinks from non-distilled ones, whereas the term spirits is more common in the UK. Some examples of liquors include vodka, rum, gin, and tequila. Liquors are often aged in barrels, such as for the production of brandy and whiskey, or are infused with flavorings to form a flavored liquor such as absinthe.
While the word liquor ordinarily refers to distilled alcoholic spirits rather than beverages produced by fermentation alone, it can sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any alcoholic beverage (or even non-alcoholic products of distillation or various other liquids).
Like other alcoholic drinks, liquor is typically consumed for the psychoactive effects of alcohol. Liquor may be consumed on its own ('neat'), typically in amounts of around 50 millilitres (1.7 US fluid ounces) per served drink. In an undiluted form, distilled beverages are often slightly sweet, and bitter, and typically impart a burning mouthfeel, with an odor derived from the alcohol and the production and aging processes
the exact flavor varies between different varieties of liquor and the different impurities they impart. Liquor is also frequently mixed with other ingredients to form a cocktail.
Rapid consumption of a large amount of liquor can cause severe alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Consistent consumption of liquor over time correlates with higher mortality and other harmful health effects

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WYK - This image shows a close-up detail of a stained glass pub window bearing the words Smoke Room , formed in leaded lettering against amber-coloured glass. Such signage was common in traditional English pubs, where drinking spaces were historically divided into areas such as public bars, saloons, tap rooms, and smoke rooms.
The smoke room was typically a more comfortable or enclosed area where patrons could smoke pipes or cigarettes, reflecting social customs of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although smoking is now prohibited in enclosed public spaces in the UK, the architectural features associated with these rooms remain an important part of pub heritage.
Decorative stained and leaded glass windows are characteristic of historic British pub interiors, combining function, privacy, and visual identity. In cities like York, many pubs retain these features as part of their listed or conservation-area status.
Photographed to emphasise texture, lettering, and glasswork, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, social history, heritage architecture, interior design, and traditional signage.

For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Greenall's Bitter is 3.6% ABV. Greenall's Mild is 3.1%

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K546YC - Originally built by public subscription as a library and newsroom.
The assembly Room on the upper floor was added later. It became the county court building and this is the name by which it is best remembered.
When the county court moved to the new combined courts building, this building was put on the market and became a night club, called Chancellors, and currently goes under the name of Walkabout.
The main court room furniture was given by the purchasers to Wolverhampton Law School, at the University, where it was reassembled as a moot court.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P042 - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0PRY4 - Standing proudly on Penny Lane, the Dovedale Towers has been a part of Liverpool for centuries.
The pub has a colourful past, with links to The Beatles and Queen, making it part of rock and roll history. Affectionately known as the Dovey.
Built in the 1800s, the pub was originally known as Grove House, before being taken over by Andrew Kurtz, a renowned patron of the arts in Liverpool and a talented pianist.
After Mr Kurtz died Grove House became an orphanage named The Home for Incurable Children. Back in 2019, Jonathan Maguire, operations manager for Old Ropewalks Ltd, who own The Dovedale Towers, said: The Home became the parochial hall for St Barnabas' Church in 1914 and became a vital part of the local community, providing the area with a community hub during the difficult times that spanned two World Wars.
During the Second World War, the venue became known as Barney's and hosted dances and balls for locals and visiting troops as St Barnabas' Church Hall. John Lennon and Paul McCartney played the venue several times with The Quarrymen in 1957
Paul even sang in the St Barnabas' Church choir, which he revealed during his Carpool Karaoke with James Corden in 2018.
But the Dovedale Towers doesn't just have links to The Beatles, but Queen too. Ken Testi, a music promoter and the manager of a band call Ibex in 1969, spoke to the ECHO in 1991 about his experiences with Freddie Mercury and recounted the first time the future Queen frontman met Ibex.
He added: Freddie used to doss in Beechwood Avenue, Halewood, a few doors from my house, with Mike Bersin. Mike's mum often told the story of her coming downstairs to find Mike and pals all lying on the floor, crashed out after travelling from London or a gig, which included Freddie.
While living in the city, Freddie found a temporary home in the flat above Dovedale Towers. At the time, the tavern was run by the parents of Ibex roadie Geoff Higgins who offered the apartment to Freddie while he stayed north

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYBY - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TM - Arkell's Brewery was established in Swindon, England by John Arkell in 1843, and has been owned by members of the Arkell family since its establishment. It is Swindon's oldest company, built initially on the massive expansion of Swindon in the Victorian era with the arrival of the railways and the decision by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to site the Great Western Railway Works in Swindon in 1841.
Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

Opening on Market Street in 1872, it moved to its current premises, on a backstreet just off Chapel Walks, in the mid-twentieth century. Publicity material from the 1960s reads: In a world of change, we at Sam's Chop House have preserved the best
the quality of food remains constant
the hospitality is just as warm as it was 100 years ago.' But times did change, and after being run as a pub for a while, Sam's closed down in the '90s. It reopened as a second incarnation of a Victorian chop house, with a lovingly recreated interior, in 2001.
Fun fact: Sam's artist-in-residence was Lowry
Head in at any hour and youíll see someone in a rumpled suit, waistcoat and trilby propping up the bar. With one difference: the figure has been dead for 43 years. It's artist LS Lowry, Samís most famous patron, immortalised in brass. A regular for many years, he often gave staff his drawings.

It was originally planned to place the monument in front of the Royal Infirmary building at Piccadilly, between the statues of Wellington and Peel. However it was felt that its ornate Gothic design was not in keeping with the neoclassical infirmary.[3] In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space

There has been an inn or hotel on the same site for much longer and the village of Grappenhall itself is recorded as far back as the Domesday Book of 1086. The image of a grinning cat carved into the tower on St. Wilfrids Church is believed to be the inspiration for Lewis Carolls Cheshire cat in Alices Adventures in Wonderland. One of the many unique features of The Rams Head Inn is the original village well, situated near the bar. The well actually pre-dates the existing building at about 150 years old, but is now fitted with walkover glass and illuminated from the inside. A large outside eating and drinking patio is located behind the pub next to the large car park. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPGA - A craft brewery or microbrewery is a brewery that produces small amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and is often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
The microbrewing movement began in both the United States and United Kingdom in the 1970s, although traditional artisanal brewing existed in Europe for centuries and subsequently spread to other countries. As the movement grew, and some breweries expanded their production and distribution, the more encompassing concept of craft brewing emerged. A brewpub is a pub that brews its own beer for sale on the premises
The term microbrewery originated in the UK in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries that focused on producing traditional cask ale independently of major brewers or pub chains. In 1972, Martin Sykes established Selby Brewery as the first new independent brewing company for 50 years
Some British brewpubs specialize in ale, while others brew continental lagers and wheat beers. The Ministry of Ales, Burnley
The Masons Arms in Headington, Oxford
The Brunswick Inn, Derby (in 2010, half of the beers sold by the establishment were brewed on-site)
The Watermill pub, Ings Cumbria
and the Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds are some examples of small independent brewpubs in the UK.
The city of Bristol was identified by The Guardian in May 2014 as an area where the microbrewery industry had flourished. Ten brewpubs, such as Zerodegrees, The Tobacco Factory, Copper Jacks Crafthouse and The Urban Standard, were identified as thriving Bristol craft beer establishments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY9 - William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)
T. Schofield & Son, Ashton under Lyne (1926)
Kays Atlas Brewery, Ardwick (1929) and Bell & Co, Stockport (1949).
The brewery owns many historic pubs, including the New Hall Inn in Bowness on Windermere.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFF90 - Thwaites Brewery is a regional brewery owned by founded in 1807 by Daniel Thwaites in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The firm still operates from its original town centre site, although the original brewery was demolished in 2011, and part of its beer business was sold to Marston's in March 2015. Today, Thwaites still produces beer but it in much smaller quantities as it only sells to its own estate of pubs, inns and hotels. In 1999, the Mitchell brewery in Lancaster closed down, and was bought in part by Thwaites. Lancaster Bomber has since been available from Thwaites public houses after being acquired in the takeover. Lancaster Bomber is now brewed by Marston's, as is Wainwright, the other top-selling Thwaite's beer.
The company has over 270 pubs, mainly in the North of England but reaching from the North Lakes area down to Solihull & Leicestershire. It also has six four-star Hotels & Spas and eight Inns of Characters
The brewery invested heavily in pasteurised keg beers, especially those powered by nitro in the 1990s. However, it is now working to increase the market for its cask beers. Thwaites unveiled a new craft brewery in December 2011 named Crafty Dan

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E5 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTDP - The Jewellery Quarter is an area of central Birmingham, UK. Situated in the north western area of the Birmingham City Centre, there is a population of around 19,000 people in a 1.07-square-kilometre (264-acre) area.
The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Because the definition of a jeweller was not explained in the directory, it is thought that it may contain many irregularities and the number of actual jewellers may be lower. It is thought that by the start of the 19th century, there were around 12 jewellery manufacturing companies, employing approximately 400 people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466N - Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is a Grade II listed public house in Nottingham which claims to have been established in 1189, although there is no documentation to verify this date. The building rests against Castle Rock, upon which Nottingham Castle is built, and is attached to several caves, carved out of the soft sandstone. These were reputedly originally used as a brewhouse for the castle, dating from the medieval period.
The earliest known reference to the name Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem was in 1799. Before being known by its current name, it is believed that the pub was named The Pilgrim and references to this name date back to 1751. The current name is believed to come from the belief that pilgrims or crusaders would stop at the inn on their journey to Jerusalem. Some elements of the pub's name are misunderstood in the modern day: Ye Olde is properly pronounced the old and trip refers to a stop on a journey, rather than the journey itself.
Locals often use a shortened version of the name, the Trip.
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is one of several pubs claiming to be the oldest in England others that claim to be the oldest include Ye Olde Salutation Inn and The Bell Inn, also in Nottingham
The pub claims that it was established in 1189 AD the year that Richard the Lionheart became king and Pope Gregory VIII called for a Third Crusade to the Holy Land
however, there is no documentation to verify this date. Evidence suggests that caves in the rock against which the pub is built were used as a brewhouse for Nottingham Castle, and may date from around the time the castle was built in 1067.
The oldest parts of the current building were likely constructed between 1650 and 1660, though a map by John Speed shows a previous building in existence in 1610. By 1751 the building was being used as an inn with the name The Pilgrim, and was shortly after that date purchased by William Standford

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9FFM1 - The Cheshire Ring is a canal cruising circuit or canal ring, which includes sections of six canals in and around Cheshire and Greater Manchester in North West England: the Ashton Canal, Peak Forest Canal, Macclesfield Canal, Trent and Mersey Canal, Bridgewater Canal and Rochdale Canal.
Because it takes boats approximately one week to complete the circuit, it is suited to narrowboat holidays that start at and return to the same location. The route has 92 locks and is 97 miles (156 km) long. It passes through contrasting landscapes between Manchester city centre and rural Cheshire with views of the Peak District and the Cheshire Plain.
The term Cheshire Ring first appeared in the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) Bulletin in 1965,[2] where it was coined as part of a campaign to prevent the abandonment of, and restore navigation to, part of what had been known as the Peak Forest Circular Route between Manchester and Marple. When commercial carrying declined after the Second World War, sections of the Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals that make up the urban part of the ring had gradually fallen into disuse, and by the early 1960s were impassable, with little depth of water and many locks in an unusable condition. There was a risk that the canals would be abandoned, and infilled, as they were becoming stinking eyesores. Perseverance by the IWA and the Peak Forest Canal Society paid off, and on 1 April 1974, following restoration, the ring was re-opened to navigation.
The Rochdale Canal (unlike most other canals in England) was not nationalised in 1947, and remained in the ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company. Both the Rochdale Canal and Bridgewater Canal escaped nationalisation as a result of being owned subsidiaries of the Manchester Ship Canal company.
In 2002, as part of the restoration of the Rochdale, ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company passed to the Waterways Trust, and British Waterways became the navigation authority, bringing to an end the £3

This beer is a collaboration with the anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate. This creates a classic pale ale with a lot of body and citrus flavours
Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poitín would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Our Beers are in pubs all over the UK and we've recently launched our online shop and new Taproom in London Fields. Come and join us for a pint!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWMD - The Vagabonds Carnival Club was founded in 1947 by Ken Parsons and Walt Creedy, and the club's first entry, The Miners, took first place at Bridgwater Carnival. Members originally met at Unity House (the local Labour Party headquarters) for a room rent of one shilling per night.
The following year, the club moved to The Railway Hotel, and the new home brought further success, after winning the carnival concerts with the stage show Gay Bachelors.
The Bristol and Exeter Pub (St John Street) became home to the club in 1951, before it moved to Ye Olde Oake (High Street) after club member, Ray Heal, took a tenancy with local brewers Starkey, Knight and Ford.
In 2001, the club were looking for a new site to build its entries after being forced to leave its cart building site at Huntworth after 17 years. After identifying a suitable new site at Dunwear, the club set about constructing a new shed. The cost of doing this, in terms of both time and money, proved a heavy burden, and for the first time in its history, the club was unable to enter a cart into Bridgwater Carnival in 2002. So in true carnival spirit, some members rode the procession route on the back of a lorry, with the remaining members walking behind.
The club is currently based at The Gallery, High Street, Bridgwater.
Whatever happens, The Vagabonds Carnival Club has already done enough to stamp its mark in the annals of carnival history and will, with luck, continue to do so for a long time to come.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ5MJ - The medieval Glasgow Cross was located on the road between High Street and Saltgait. Its modern replacement was built to the south-east of the original location to aid traffic. The town's tron was placed on the steeple of the town house in the 1550s. The Tron Steeple, as it became known, still stands in Glasgow Cross, one of the few remaining pre-Victorian buildings in Glasgow.
The area now known as 'Merchant City' was developed from the 1750s onwards. Residences and warehouses of the wealthy merchant tobacco lords (who prospered in shipping and, amongst other things, tobacco, sugar and tea) were built in the area. The district west of the High Street formed the historic backbone of the city, the development of what is now known as with wide, straight streets, vistas, and squares, marked the beginning of a process of aspirational residential movement westwards that would continue throughout the 19th century and into the 20th with the development of Blythswood Hill, Hillhead and the West End of Glasgow.

This is just fantastic when I entered I never expected to win, said Phil. What could be better for business than having a beer called Boltmaker on my bar! It will help to spread the name far and wide.
Timothy Taylor sales director Grant Simpson said: Exactly 60 years ago we ran a similar competition to name a beer it became Landlord and has grown into an iconic brand.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4MNN - Half Hangit' Maggie
Maggie Dickson lived in the Early Eighteenth century as a fish hawker and would certainly have remained an anonymous figure had she not been the subject of a public hanging.
Her misfortune began when her husband deserted her in 1723 forcing her to leave the city and move further south to Kelso near the Scottish Borders. Here, she worked for an inkeeper in return for basic lodgings.
Soon after she started an affair with the Innkeeper's son which led to her becoming pregnant, not wanting the innkeeper to discover this as it would surely lead to her instant dismissal she concealed her pregnancy as long as possible. However the baby was born prematurely and died within a few days of being born. Still hiding the baby's existance she planned to put the baby into the River Tweed, but couldn't bring herself to and finally left it on the riverbank.
The same day the baby was discovered and traced to Maggie. She was charged under the contravention of the Concealment of Pregnancy Act and she was taken back to Edinburgh for Trial and execution the latter taking place in public in the Grasssmarket on the 2nd September 1724.
After the hanging she was pronounced dead and her body was bound for Musselburgh where she was to be buried, however the journey was interrupted by a knocking and banging from within the wooden coffin.
The lid was lifted to the sight of Maggie, quite alive. The law saw it as God's will and she was freed to live for a further forty years. She became something of a local celebrity and the locals gave her the nickname 'Half Hangit' Maggie.'
Some said that she had seduced and manipulated the ropemaker, to engineer a weaker noose.
A pub in the Grassmarket is named Maggie Dickson's after her memory, which means her name and story will be remembered for some time yet.

It was very fortuitous that the brewery was in Manchester. To outsiders, Manchester is a very attractive place known the world over for soccer, art, music and broadcasting. It would be difficult to have a Cream of Wolverhampton even though Banks's beer is very good. People do not aspire to visit Wolverhampton. On the whole they try to by-pass it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHC5 - William Brodie (28 September 1741 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.
Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design, ...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity.

Brodie's alter ego
Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture made by Brodie, wrote a play (with W. E. Henley) entitled Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life, which was unsuccessful. However, Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable façade, and his real nature and was inspired to write The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).[1]
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner of the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close off the Royal Mile, which contained his family residence and workshops, still bears the name Brodie's Close. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1B4 - Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for supposedly spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died himself on 14 January 1872.
The story continues to be well known as active oral history in Edinburgh, through several books and films, and because a prominent commemorative statue and nearby graves act as a tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED3YP - The Old Tolbooth was the main municipal building in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland for more than 400 years. The medieval structure, which was located at the west end of the Luckenbooths on the High Street in the Old Town, was first established in the 14th century by royal charter. Over the years it served a variety of purposes such as housing the Burgh Council, early meetings of the Estates of Scotland and the Court of Session. The Tolbooth was also the burgh's main gaol where public execution and torture were routinely conducted.
In 1817 the building, which had been rebuilt and renovated several times, was demolished.

Its a historic Art Nouveau Grade II masterpiece of a pub was built in 1905 on the site of a Dominican friary. The building was designed by architect H. Fuller-Clark and artist Henry Poole, both committed to the free-thinking of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Jolly friars appear everywhere in the pub in sculptures, mosaics and reliefs. We are lucky to still be here as our wonderful pub was saved from demolition by a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman.

Nil Nimium Cupito Mee 1722
The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.
Great Budworth is a village that was formerly in the estate of Arley Hall. In the later part of the 19th century, its owner, Rowland Egerton-Warburton, undertook a campaign to restore the village and render it picturesque in Victorian eyes.
The George and Dragon was at that time a simple three-bay Georgian inn. In 1875 Egerton-Warburton commissioned the Chester architect John Douglas to undertake the restoration. Douglas added tall rubbed chimneys, mullioned windows and a steep pyramidal turret
On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722

Marlborough is a beautiful, ancient town bristling with fine buildings - and they don't come much better than The Bear Hotel.
Arkell's bought the pub in 1987 and these days there is no mistaking a place that is enthusiatically listed in The Good Pub Guide.
With its front in the High Street, facing the old Town Hall, and its side in The Parade, The Bear Hotel is a magnificent sight. It is late 19th century Jacobean and Georgian in style and has looked this way since 1889 after it was luxuriously re-built, but there had been an inn here at least by 1757.
A directory of 1914 was emphatic in its praise of The Bear Hotel. The house is fitted with all the latest and best appliances, it said. Wines, spirits and cigars of the finest quality and good stabling. It was then called The Bear and Castle and at some point was rechristened - possibly to avoid confusion with other Marlborough pubs with similar names.

Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing.
France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry.
They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.
The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was perfectly legal.
The European Commission (EC) is currently considering the Scottish government's request to be granted an exemption from trade regulations to enact the minimum price law which was approved by the Scottish Parliament last year.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 7706160488 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in Edinburgh New Town, only 10-15 mins walk from Princes St area. Its well worth a walk for a great range of real ales and whiskies. I have spent a good few hours in there with my good friend Stephen Buchan. A chap who appreciates a real ale or two.
Originally a Georgian coach house, in the early Victorian era the building was remodelled into John Kay and Sons, Wines and spirits Merchants. Sympathetically modified in the 1970's the bar hosts a plethora of original Victorian features. its a bit like going back in time, reminds me a little of Mulligans in Dublin. Shame no one has written a novel covering a single drunken day around Edinburgh yet. If so, this pub should surely be in it.
Usually available are Budvar, Leffe, Budvar Dark, Innis &
Gunn, Furstenberg Frei, Corona, Magners, Becks, crabbies, Draught Guinness, Strongbow, fizzy Fosters &
Kronenburg.
I have never eaten there, but they do mince/haggis neeps and tatties \u00a34.10, Scotch pie beans and chips for under \u00a34. More up market herring salad just over a fiver.

Well, Dewsbury West Yorkshire actually! Its the other end of the ale trail to Stalyvegas, in case you were wondering....
From 1848 to 1968, when British Rail gasped its last puff of steam, Wellington Road Station was a thriving giant on the Trans-Pennine route. The next 25 years saw it decline and most of it closed as it was de-manned.
That all changed in 1994 when the old waiting rooms were renovated and converted into a bar. The high street banks and big breweries did not want to know. But with the help of the Co-op Bank and an independent Lincolnshire brewery, Batemans, of Skegness, Mike Field was able to realise his dream.
The bar is situated in the original railway station building as operated by London and North Western Railways (LNWR). The Italianate/Tudor style is very unusual and is best appreciated from the car park (former Goods Yard). Perhaps most unusual is the use of an Arabic Arch in each doorway and window and in the re-discovered archways which separate each room.
The West Riding does a mean \u00a33 bacon &
sausage bap with brown sauce. Worth a trip to have one even if you are tee-total.
'Last Train to Trancentral (Live from the Lost Continent)', was a successful acid house KLF single from April 1991. It reached no 2 in the UK Singles Chart and achieved international top ten placings.
It was used by Exeter City FC during their promotion season 2007-08 prior to kick-off in order to generate an atmosphere.
With The KLF's profits, Drummond and Cauty established the K Foundation and sought to subvert the art world, staging an alternative art award for the worst artist of the year and burning one million pounds sterling. As we all now know, Exeter City could have done with that cash!

The Steve Miller Band is a US rock band formed in 1967 in San Francisco. Familiar tracks include 'The Joker', 'Jet Airliner' and the 1982 hit 'Abracadabra'. This is one of my favourite tracks however, very clever lyrics. El Salvador &
Afghanistan ('ask those people about the macho plan...') are name checked in the song reflecting some cynicism of US foreign policy at the time, early 1980's.
The album 'Circle of love' contains a 16 minutes version of this track (taking up the whole of a side of vinyl. Hear it here.
------------------------
The Beetham Tower, completed 2007 is a landmark 47-storey residential skyscraper in Manchester city centre, England. Certain a macho statement for the city and at 168 metres is the highest outside of London.
It consists of a (four star) Hilton Hotel up to level 23 and apartments from level 25 up to the triplex penthouse on level 47. The tower lies on Deansgate and has two postal addresses, with the apartments falling under 301 Deansgate and the hotel under 303 Deansgate.
The architect, Ian Simpson, bought and resides in the top floor penthouse, which is the highest living space in Britain. It cost him \u00a33 million. The residence occupies the top two storeys of the building and apparently features a semi-indoors garden containing 21 four-metre high olive, lemon and oak trees, shipped from Italy, and placed before the roof was built.
During the installation of the glass and steel 'blade' architectural feature on the roof, a strange noise problem emerged. People reported that the building 'whistles' (more like an intermittent hum) in windy weather. The sound is close to standard musical C (approximately 262 Hertz)
some say it is like a 'UFO landing' in sci-fi films. The noise also affected the production of local soap opera, Coronation Street with producers having to create extra background noise as the tower is close to the show's set.
A evacuation occurred in September 2007 when a fire was suspected. BBC Report here. Fortunately it did not become a real life towering inferno.

Wales has been under represented in my iPod artists so far, so hopefully I can start to put that right here. 'The Bartender and the Thief' is a 1998 single by British rock band the Stereophonics. It was the first single taken from their second album Performance and Cocktails. It was released in November 1998 and reached no 3 in the UK charts.
The song, which is one of their heavier tracks, is frequently played amongst their live sets. During live performances, vocalist Kelly Jones has been known to utilise the two bars without vocals before the final chorus to reference the Motorhead song 'Ace of Spades'. The lyrics therefore are 'The ace of spades, the ace of spades. The bartender and the thief were lovers...'
Strangely, the song's full length intro only featured on the CD1 single (and in the music video), but was edited off the Performance &
Cocktails album.
------------------------
The Saracens Head was the 'brewery tap' pub next to the old Warrington Greenall's Brewery. The concern was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the Company relocated to Warrington in 1787.
It ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels. Greenall's owned beer brands were brewed by Allied Breweries at their Leeds and Burton plant. Greenall's ale can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although it is thankfully slowly disappearing and often only the 'Greenall's Mild' brand can be found.
For a short while I lived fairly close to the pub and enjoyed many a good guest pint in there. I was told it was a good place to pick up the odd piece of hot property, but no-one offered me anything while I was drinking there. It has rrecently been given a lick of paint and has become a JW Lees pub. When they are serving food, apparently the hand cut chips are worth a look.

The Ring Of Bells is situated in the yard adjacent to St Elphins ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4163626967/ ), Warrington's principle central church. The building is grade I listed in the same manner as the church. Its a fine traditional boozer and watering hole.

Dave down there has Cask Marque accreditation and are regularly featured in 'Out Inn Cheshire', our areas CAMRA magazine. The Cask Marque trust website will help you locate the nearest accredited real ale pub to you at www.cask-marque.co.uk/pubs/map.php. there is also an iPhone app (if you have such new fangled things) to do this for you too. Its called CaskFinder.
There is a varied menu at the Ring Of Bells and they have a four star rating from the local council. All the food is freshly prepared and as far as practical from locally sourced ingredients. I am not sure what the pub was named after. A 'Rams Head' in canal terms is the wooden rudder post on a butty usually decorated with rope work and sometimes with a horse's tail. Maybe this is the source as the Bridgewater canal is only a short stones throw away.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6FP - The street sign and architectural frontage of The Star and Garter, a well-known historic pub and live-music venue on Fairfield Street in Ardwick, Manchester, photographed at 1820 Fairfield Street, Manchester M1 2QF. The pub stands close to Manchester Piccadilly Station, an area long associated with rail travel, warehousing and late-nineteenth-century urban development.
The building features characteristic Victorian red-brick construction with decorative stonework and a prominent street-corner sign identifying Fairfield Street and Ardwick. The Star and Garter has operated as a public house for over a century and is widely recognised in Manchester for its association with alternative music, independent culture and the city's grassroots live-music scene.
In recent decades, the venue has gained national recognition as an important space for emerging bands and experimental music, contributing to Manchester's reputation as a city with a strong and diverse musical heritage. The image documents both the architectural detail of the building and its place within Manchester's historic streetscape, offering editorial value for themes of urban history, pub culture and music venues in northern England. The Star and Garter has long been regarded as one of Manchester's most important grass-roots live-music pubs, particularly for post-punk, indie, noise and DIY scenes. Over the years it has hosted performances by bands closely associated with the city's alternative music heritage, including The Fall, whose members were known to frequent and play small, informal venues around Piccadilly and Ardwick, as well as later generations of experimental and underground acts. More recently, the venue has become a key stop for touring and local artists such as Gnod, Hey Colossus, and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, reinforcing its reputation as a place where loud, uncompromising music thrives. Rather than hosting polished mainstream shows, the Star and Garter's significance lies in rock.

The image captures the lively evening atmosphere of one of Manchester city centre's best known LGBTQ+ nightlife areas, where Canal Street, the Rochdale Canal and nearby streets are associated with queer culture, Pride events, cabaret, bars, clubs, restaurants and tourism. Via Manchester is listed at 28-30 Canal Street, Manchester M1 3EZ, and its own venue information describes it as a friendly local LGBTQ+ bar with live entertainment seven days a week. The venue also describes itself as open since 1995 and as the grande dame of Canal Street, a long standing part of the Gay Village's entertainment scene. This editorial image is useful for coverage of Manchester Pride, LGBTQ+ travel, nightlife, city breaks, inclusive tourism, cabaret venues, evening economy, urban leisure, hospitality, queer history and the cultural identity of Manchester. The visible VIA signs, colourful rainbow-style lighting and twilight street scene give the photograph strong search value for articles about Canal Street, the Gay Village, Pride weekends, LGBTQIA+ venues, night-time economy, bars and live entertainment in North West England. The picture also works for broader features on city centre regeneration, tourism marketing, weekend breaks, hospitality recovery, pub and bar culture, Manchester after dark and the importance of LGBTQ+ venues as social and cultural anchors. The mix of deep blue dusk sky, bright coloured lights, brick architecture and blurred passers-by creates a sense of movement and excitement while keeping the venue frontage as the main documentary subject. Editorial use should recognise that the venue name and visible signage may be protected branding, so the image is best suited to news, travel, culture, nightlife and documentary contexts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJGT - A traditional illuminated Guinness pub sign hanging from the exterior of an Irish pub in Dublin city centre, Ireland, photographed at dusk. The sign features the instantly recognisable Guinness branding, including a stylised pint of stout with a creamy head, set against a red background.
Guinness is one of Ireland's most iconic global brands and has been closely associated with Dublin since the eighteenth century. Hanging pub signs such as this are a familiar feature of the city's streetscape, particularly in historic areas where traditional pubs continue to play a central role in social and cultural life.
The warm glow of the illuminated sign contrasts with the surrounding brick and stone architecture and the fading evening light, evoking the atmosphere of Dublin's nightlife and hospitality scene. Street lamps and neighbouring buildings help frame the image within a lived-in urban environment.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating Irish pub culture, Dublin nightlife, iconic beer branding, tourism in Ireland, traditional hospitality, and urban street scenes in European capital cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E6 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJB - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986.

When the county court moved to the new combined courts building, this building was put on the market and became a night club, called Chancellors, and currently goes under the name of Walkabout.
The main court room furniture was given by the purchasers to Wolverhampton Law School, at the University, where it was reassembled as a moot court.

During this time they also supported, amongst others, Matt McGinn, Hamish Imlach and Billy Connolly and enjoyed an extended run at the Edinburgh Festival with the legendary Tim Hardin.
Thereafter they went their separate ways........Alistair McDougald performing solo on the club cabaret circuit, Colin Mackenzie forming and playing with North Sea Gas folk group and Ian Lawson leading a successful rock band.
In 1992 the group reformed for a project in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Bill Hill in which they performed acoustic music spanning 30 years........Skiffle, Folk, Protest, Calypso, Country and Contemporary.
One of the hits of this year's festival - Danny Kyle, BBC Radio Scotland.
Since then the band have been in great demand for concerts, folk festivals, corporate functions, pub, hotel and club gigs all over Scotland and on tour in Denmark and Ireland.
Peter Gillan joined the band when Ian retired due to work commitments in 1998. Having spent many years as a singer/guitarist playing solo on the folk and country scenes, Peter's experience has added yet another dimension to the band.
Walter Mowat joined Yard Of Ale in 2015. Walter has played in a number of folk and bluegrass bands over the years and also plays violin with the Really Terrible Orchestra.
Ian Lawson and Colin Mackenzie still occasionally feature with the band for larger gigs and as emergency stand-ins.

Where a named pub, brewery, beer pump, pint glass or drinking street is visible, it can support articles on licensed premises, cask ale, CAMRA interest, tourism, nightlife, local character and changing high streets. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, EH1 1PB, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Weather and season may be visible outside or through the setting
the subject has clear hospitality and leisure value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.
