Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENMPW3 - Pint of amber-coloured Thwaites beer stands beside a tabletop promotion for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in a British pub. The branded card reads World Cup 2026 , Watch to Win £5K and Plus 4x £1K prizes , with a clearly displayed pub code and QR code for customers to enter. Thwaites Ribble Valley branding also appears on the beer glass and coaster, linking the competition directly with the brewery's pub estate and its cask ale tradition.
The photograph illustrates how breweries and licensed premises use major international football tournaments to attract customers, increase dwell time and encourage food and drink sales. World Cup fixtures are often shown live in pubs, turning individual matches into shared social occasions built around television sport, local hospitality and communal support. The combination of a promotional prize, pub-specific entry code and branded drink gives the campaign a strong point-of-sale presence at the table.
Thwaites traces its brewing history to 1807, when Daniel Thwaites became a partner in Blackburn's Eanam Brewery. The company later moved brewing to a smaller craft brewery at Mellor Brook, near the Ribble Valley, which opened in 2018. Its core range includes traditional cask ales served through Thwaites pubs, inns and hotels. The visible pint may be bitter or amber ale, although the exact beer cannot be confirmed from the image alone.
This contemporary editorial image is suitable for coverage of World Cup marketing, pub promotions, beer advertising, prize competitions, sports viewing, football culture, brewery sponsorship, licensed hospitality, local pubs, consumer promotions and the economic importance of major tournaments to the British pub trade. It also records the continuing role of printed table cards and QR codes in connecting in-person hospitality with digital competition entry. It also reflects the value of tournament footfall for pubs competing with home viewing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTX5 - Framed promotional sign for The Famous Stalybridge Buffet with Boddingtons Bitter branding, photographed inside Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar in Greater Manchester. The image combines railway pub heritage, beer advertising and Manchester brewing history, showing a nostalgic interior sign that links the celebrated station bar with Boddingtons, the former Manchester brewery famous for its bitter and Cream of Manchester identity. Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar is one of the best-known surviving railway station pubs in England, located on Platform 4 at Stalybridge railway station. CAMRA describes it as a Victorian railway buffet with marble bar and historic interior, housed in buildings that formed part of the station's 1885 reconstruction, and notes that it is one of very few licensed station buffets on the English rail network to survive substantially intact from before the Second World War. The image is useful for editorial coverage of real ale, railway heritage, pub preservation, northern drinking culture, beer tourism, cask ale, historic pub interiors, brewery memorabilia and the Manchester to Huddersfield ale trail. The sign's bold typography, Boddingtons badge and station-buffet wording make it especially relevant for stories about traditional bitter, old brewery advertising, pub signage, railway refreshment rooms and the way historic bars use breweriana and transport nostalgia to create atmosphere. Tameside Council also notes that Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar dates back to 1885 and retains many original features, with travellers and townspeople still able to enjoy a pint or cup of tea among reminders of earlier railway days. This photograph has strong stock value for beer writers, CAMRA features, railway magazines, pub history, travel articles, local heritage, Great Manchester culture, Tameside tourism and documentary pieces about characterful pubs that remain part of working railway stations. It is a small detail, but it tells a bigger story of Victorian

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BFC - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. Greenall's Bitter is 3.6% ABV. Greenall's Mild is 3.1%

Brewery
Joseph Holt have brewed on their site in the Cheetham area, to the north of Manchester city centre, since 1860.[2] Ale and lager malts are now delivered in bulk loads and stored in silos while speciality malts continue to be delivered in sacks. Between 15 and 500 barrels (4,500 “ 150,000 pints) can be brewed per day, and a hopback is still in use, along with traditional whole leaf hops, to collect and clarify wort after boiling. All ales are top fermented in enclosed square fermenters using the historic Joseph Holt yeast strain, while lagers are fermented and conditioned in modern cylindroconical vessels. Joseph Holt have their own borehole on the brewery site to abstract brewing liquor (water) and are one of only a handful of brewers in the UK still to rack into 36 gallon casks, as well as hogsheads, the largest barrel size, carrying 432 pints (54 imperial gallons, 250 L) and weighing roughly 660 pounds (300 kg) when full.
History
Joseph Holt, the son of a weaver, was born in 1813 in Unsworth, a textile village near Bury. He worked as a carter at Harrison's Strangeways Brewery. In 1849 he married Catherine Parry, who helped finance a small brewery behind a pub on Oak Street, Manchester.
In 1860, he purchased the brewery site on Empire Street, Cheetham. His reputation in Manchester endures
in 2007, readers of the Manchester Evening News voted him People's Champion in the Greatest ever Business Leaders awards. In 1882, by which time he had established a chain of 20 public houses, Joseph passed control of the brewery to his son Edward. Edward Holt was later knighted, served as Lord Mayor of Manchester from 1907 to 1909 and was made a baronet in 1916.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ52W - Pickled eggs are typically hard boiled eggs that are cured in vinegar or brine. As with many foods, this was originally a way to preserve the food so that it could be eaten months later. Pickled eggs have since become a favorite among many as a snack or hors d'œuvre popular in pubs, bars and taverns, and around the world in places where beer is served.
After the eggs are hard boiled, the shell is removed and they are submerged in a solution of vinegar, salt, spices, and other seasonings. Recipes vary from the traditional brine solution for pickles, to other solutions, which can impart a sweet or spicy taste.
The final taste is largely determined by the pickling solution. The eggs are left in this solution from one day to several months. Prolonged exposure to the pickling solution may result in a rubbery texture. A common practice is to puncture the egg with a toothpick to allow the pickling solution to penetrate to the egg's interior, but this is dangerous as it can introduce clostridium into the finished product.[1] Eggs prepared with this method have sometimes had high enough levels of botulinum toxin to cause illness in a human.
Pickled eggs may be served as part of a main course, hors d'œuvres, or garnishes.[

In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. THIS IS THE BEER YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
180 year old family-run-brewers, Robinsons, have unveiled a new seasonal beer designed to get drinkers to come out in force: Hoppy Wan Kenobi
a golden ale inspired by the world-famous movie: Star Wars.
Available for just two months throughout June and July, this noble brew is crisp, tart and packing a punch. The pump clip has been carefully designed to capture the legendary Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, proudly presenting his iconic blue plasma blade lightsaber. ˜Search your feelings' and you'll find the hop is strong with this one. Loaded with cascade and sovereign hops, and interlaced with light citrus aromas, this 4% ABV limited-edition golden ale is dangerously drinkable.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is part of Robinsons' series of seasonal movie-themed ales that have been specially brewed for 2018.
Gill Yates, Brands Manager for Robinsons Brewery, explains: For our latest seasonal beer, Hoppy Wan Kenobi, we decided to continue to play on our popular TV and film series theme, as from our customer's response we're aware of how well it works. In 2017, we sold 770,688 pints of our seasonal beers altogether. This was a great result and we're pleased to be able to provide drinkers with fun, relatable ales which look fantastic alongside our other beers on the bar. We hope that everybody gets a chance to taste this golden delight.
Hoppy Wan Kenobi is available throughout June and July regionally via select Robinsons' pubs and free trade across the North West, Cumbria and North Wales, and nationally via listings with Heineken, Enterprise Inns Carlsberg, Punch, Admiral Taverns, Stonegate,

The brewery was formed in 1828 when retired cotton manufacturer John Lees purchased land in Middleton, Lancashire and built Greengate Brewery, from which the company still operates. The company was renamed J.W. Lees & Co. Brewers when his grandson, John William Lees, took over the company in 1876.
The company is still family owned and operated. When William, Simon, Christina and Michael Lees-Jones joined Richard and Christopher at J.W. Lees in the 1990s, they were the sixth generation from the founder.
In 2004, Greengate Brewery featured in the television show Most Haunted, and in 2003 HRH Charles, Prince of Wales visited to celebrate the brewery's 175th anniversary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE73P - Inside The famous Anchor Tap
Situated on the south side of the Thames in the Tower Bridge Conservation Area, this historic Southwark pub offers a truly traditional English experience. From the fish and chip suppers served, to the string of clearly designated separate rooms, upright piano, games room and open fire this pub effortlessly captures old-fashioned England.
Within the dark, oak walls of this late 18th century, former dock-workers pub, one of the most quintessentially English inventions took seed. Dr Samuel Johnson compiled his English dictionary in a special room inside The Anchor Tap. Originally a place for brewery employees to sample the fruits of their labour, a Tap Room was traditionally set up near its parent brewery.
The Anchor Tap was the first such establishment set up by British brewing legends, John Courage, and was located in close proximity to the former Anchor Brewery and the old Hop Exchange on Borough High Street. The Anchor Tap is an unpretentious, wharfside treasure offering a simple taste of a bygone English age.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H366T8 - This documentary stock photograph shows Traditional Pub English Games, dominos with drinkers and pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord bitter, Shipley, Yorkshire, England, UK. The subject is rooted in Shipley, Yorkshire and is useful for editorial stories about Yorkshire pub culture, real ale, hand-pulled beer, traditional games and the social life of local pubs. The visible detail and caption make it more valuable than a generic bar or drink image, because it shows a real venue, real pub behaviour or a specific building connected with local social life. British pubs remain important as places to meet, eat, drink, watch sport, play traditional games and maintain informal community networks, while at the same time facing pressure from energy costs, staffing, changing drinking habits, business rates, rent, supermarket alcohol and the shift towards food-led trade. This image can support articles about real ale, hand pumps, cellar-to-bar service, drinkers, pub games such as dominoes, historic pub interiors, public house survival, tourism, hospitality employment, licensing, town-centre economies and the role of pubs in working-class and city life. It can also work for features on CAMRA, beer heritage, cask ale quality, independent pubs, after-work drinkers, railway-station pubs, local economies and nostalgia for sociable, unpretentious public houses. Search-friendly composite terms include traditional British pub culture, real ale handpull pint, Yorkshire pub games, London historic pub, pub hospitality industry, community local, cask beer service, licensed premises and UK evening economy. The documentary approach gives editors a credible image for news, magazine, web, tourism, food and drink, business, leisure, heritage and social commentary use. Where people or hands are visible, the photograph can also suggest the tactile, social side of pubs, including ordering, serving, chatting, playing and lingering rather than simply consuming a product.

Gunn is an oak-aged Scottish beer which is brewed and bottled under contract by Belhaven for Innis and Gunn. Belhaven which has a history going right back to 1719. In November 2005 it became a part of the Suffolk Bury St Edmunds based brewery Greene King. Outwardly Belhaven appears to have retained its brands and 'scottishness'.
The Innis &
Gunn Original beer is brewed in Dunbar, East Lothian before being matured in American white oak Bourbon barrels for 30 days and is then a further 47 days an a marrying tun. It is matured for upto 71 days in total. The various styles contain up to 6.6% alcohol by volume and are generally supplied in distinctive bottles. IPA (India Pale Ale matured 55 days), Triple Matured (darker at 99 days), Original (77 days) and Canadian Day Cask, packaged in an ambitious red box (like a malt whisky - 71 days).
They are all very good ales and very enjoyable. I had a couple and this is all that remains.

It is a nice part of 'old London', it was the site of a flower, fruit and vegetable market from the 1500s until 1974. The wholesale market was then relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms (not so picturesque). While Covent Garden is the only part of London licensed for street entertainment, performers have to jump through hoops, having to undertake auditions for the Market's management and representatives of the performers' union and signing up to timetabled slots.
It was nice on a quite mild March afternoon to enjoy my pint of Fullers London Pride overlooking the main piazza. This image has been turned to monochrome then selectively coloured.

It fascinated me and products of the 'Barnsley Beer Company' not being that familiar over here in the 'red rose' portion of the pennines, I thought I would give it a chance.
A very nice dark fruity, cake spiced, gingery on the burp porter style beer, well worth a try. It had flavours not unlike a Scottish clootie dumpling, if you have ever encountered one of those.
I was a frequent traveller to Barnsley when I lived over near Glossop, Derbyshire. Good to see local ale coming out of there once again.
I will comment tomorrow if any aphrodisiac qualities appear evident. Veritable snake oil :-)

I am not sure what the pub was named after. A 'Rams Head' in canal terms is the wooden rudder post on a butty usually decorated with rope work and sometimes with a horse's tail. Maybe this is the source as the Bridgewater canal is only a short stones throw away.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJB - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY1CWG - Photo shows Glass Half Full, Samuel Smith pint glass, Vine Inn, Dunham, Altrincham, Cheshire, England, UK. The image is useful for illustrating British and Irish pub culture, real ale, traditional bars, hospitality, visitor economy stories and the continued importance of pubs as social places. Where a named pub, brewery, beer pump, pint glass or drinking street is visible, it can support articles on licensed premises, cask ale, CAMRA interest, tourism, nightlife, local character and changing high streets. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Cheshire, Altrincham, Dunham, England, UK, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Weather and season may be visible outside or through the setting
the subject has clear hospitality and leisure value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news. Search relevance is helped by including concise place names, visible brand or wording, functional subject terms, and wider editorial concepts such as public realm, consumer behaviour, heritage, travel, leisure and community life where they genuinely match the picture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX4M - The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
The inn has three bays and is in two storeys. It is built in brick with a roughcast rendering on the upper storey. The roofs are hipped and covered in clay tiles. The central bay consists of a two-storey porch which projects forwards. Its lower storey has an elliptical-headed doorway, and in the upper storey is a four-light mullioned window. Each lateral bay has a four-light mullioned window in the lower storey and a three-light mullioned window in the upper storey. A tall rubbed brick chimneystack rises from the left side of the roof. Diagonally from the right corner is the inn sign. The cut-out pictorial sign itself originated in Nuremberg while its ornate wrought iron bracket was made by the estate blacksmith. On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722
