Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEBB - Photograph of a No & Low Alcohol drinks section in a Tesco supermarket aisle, showing shelves stocked with alcohol-free and low-alcohol alternatives to beer, lager, cider, wine and spirits. Visible products include Lucky Saint alcohol-free beer, Infinite Session, no and low beer multipacks, canned drinks, wine-style alternatives and spirit-style bottles, with price labels and Clubcard shelf edge promotions below. The image is useful for editorial themes around changing drinking habits, healthier lifestyles, Dry January, Sober October, mindful drinking, alcohol moderation, supermarket retail and the growing market for low and no alcohol drinks.
The sign above the shelving clearly reads No & Low Alcohol, making the photograph relevant for searches about alcohol-free drinks ranges, no alcohol beer, non-alcoholic wine, low alcohol cider, alcohol-free spirits and supermarket merchandising. It also works for stories about the cost of healthier choices, as several shelf prices are visible and many premium low and no alcohol products can appear expensive compared with standard soft drinks or mainstream beers. The image can illustrate pricing, health, wellbeing, alcohol harm reduction, public health messaging and how retailers are normalising alternatives for customers who want to cut down without avoiding social drinking rituals.
The UK NHS advises adults who drink alcohol not to regularly exceed 14 units a week and to spread drinking over three or more days, while Tesco advertises a dedicated range of low and no alcohol beer, wine, spirits, mixers and other drinks. This aisle display therefore has strong editorial value for features on retail trends, alcohol guidance, moderation, consumer behaviour, supermarket strategy, product innovation, health-conscious shopping, alcohol-free lager, zero alcohol beer, lower calorie lifestyles and the cultural shift towards more choice for drivers, pregnant customers, younger adults and anyone reducing alcohol intake.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93466 - Close view of an Avanti West Coast onboard passenger information poster promoting free period care on trains as part of the operator's Package for a Friend scheme. The red notice explains that if a passenger's period arrives unexpectedly, help is available onboard, with customers able to ask staff for a pad in the shop or request a Package for a Friend for a more private and discreet handover. The image is useful for editorial coverage of women's health, menstrual care, period dignity, inclusive travel, passenger welfare, public transport support initiatives and the wider role of transport operators in responding to real everyday needs. Avanti West Coast announced the scheme in 2025, saying customers could access free pads via onboard shop staff or through Click and Collect for discreet pickup. The poster also carries Package for a Friend branding, linking it to a broader rail industry initiative around menstrual equality and practical passenger support. This makes the photograph relevant for news, magazines, health features, transport policy coverage, equality and inclusion reporting, customer service case studies and rail industry commentary. Visually, the strong red design and bold white lettering create a clear, informative documentary image of modern onboard signage, while the wording gives specific context around unexpected periods, privacy and access to free sanitary products during a journey. Suitable themes include women travellers, train operator services, public information campaigns, travel reassurance, period poverty awareness, transport accessibility and practical measures to make rail travel more inclusive and less stressful for passengers. The image also works as a record of changing expectations in customer care on Britain's railways, where health, dignity and discreet support are becoming more visible parts of the onboard experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHH95 - Taken on 24 Sep 2023, this photograph shows RFID Security protected supermarket alcohol wine product, England, Great Britain, UK, WA4 2SJ. The location is Great Britain, UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. The yellow security label turns an ordinary supermarket product into a clear image about retail theft, shrinkage, high-value goods, sensor technology and changing shop-floor controls. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include anti-theft, yellow, security protected, supermarket, shops, supermarkets, products, wine, alcohol, theft, security, sticker, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social hi.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0D - Batger and Co Confectionery follows along with the theme of rationing, explored previously in the walking tour. The confectionery manufacturer was established in East London in 1748 by Miss Elizabeth Batger. The Batger family were leading sugar refiners in Britain and by the early-twentieth century became the largest jam and confectionery makers. Batger's had multiple factories, but the main factory was located on Broad Street in Stephany, which manufactured jams, bakery assortments, sweets and toffee. However, their most popular products were Chinese figs, Silmos Lollies, Jersey Caramels and John Peel marmalade, which were marketed to the public using imaginative and entertaining advertisements.
During the First World War, Batger's supplied the British army with jam. However, by 1940 the Stephany factory had been destroyed by bombing, forcing the company to move outside London's city core to 44 Clapham, Common South Side. The Clapham factory was known for producing Harlequin Christmas Crackers and cake decorations. In 1970, the company was acquired by Needlers Ltd., a confectionery manufacturer, which led to the closing of the Clapham factory a year later. Needlers Ltd. was later sold to Ashbury Confectionery Ltd. The last original Batger products were discontinued in 2000. For convenience, this tour will visit the Batger factory that was located at 566 Cable Street, which is currently an arts studio.

The town had a population of 102,629 at the 2011 Census, the wider borough around 183,200 at the 2021 Census.
It is 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of the River Mersey, in the south-west part of historic Lancashire. The town was formerly within the historic county's ancient hundred of West Derby as a small settlement in the township of Windle. By the mid 1700s, it had become larger than Windle and (by 1838) it was formally made responsible for the administration of Windle and the three other townships of Eccleston, Parr and Sutton. In 1868, it was incorporated as a town with a municipal borough. The borough later became a county borough in 1887 and replaced by a metropolitan borough with an expanded administrative responsibility for nearby towns and villages in 1974.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PN - Tripe is a type of edible lining from the stomachs of various farm animals. Most tripe is from cattle, pigs and sheep.
Beef tripe is made from the muscle wall (the interior mucosal lining is removed) of a cow's stomach chambers: the rumen (blanket/flat/smooth tripe), the reticulum (honeycomb and pocket tripe), and the omasum (book/bible/leaf tripe). Abomasum (reed) tripe is seen less frequently, owing to its glandular tissue content.
Washed tripe is more typically known as dressed tripe. To dress the tripe, the stomachs are cleaned and the fat trimmed off. It is then boiled and bleached, giving it the white color more commonly associated with tripe as seen on market stalls and in butchers' shops. The task of dressing the tripe is usually carried out by a professional tripe dresser.
Dressed tripe was a popular, nutritious and cheap dish for the British working classes from Victorian times until the latter half of the 20th century. While it is still popular in many parts of the world today, the number of tripe eaters, and consequently the number of tripe dressers, in the UK has rapidly declined. Tripe has come to be regarded as a pet food, as the increased affluence of postwar Britain has reduced the appeal of this once staple food.
It remains a popular dish in many parts of continental Europe such as Portugal, Spain, France and Italy. In France, a very popular dish, sold in most supermarkets, is tripes à la mode de Caen. In Spain callos a la madrileña are served as tapas in many restaurants as well as in supermarkets. The most beloved and celebrated dish in the city of Porto and surrounding areas, in Portugal, is 'tripas à moda do Porto', a tripe stew made with white butter beans, carrots, paprika and chouriço. It is so loved that locals are called 'Tripeiros', in an homage to the 'tripa' (tripe).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64TMR - Amazon is an American technology company that has a multinational presence with offices and facilities around the world. The company is based in Seattle, Washington and has over 1,600,000 employees globally, with 950,000 of those in the US
Amazon fulfillment centers are large facilities with hundreds of employees, sometimes thousands. Employees are responsible for five basic tasks: unpacking and inspecting incoming goods
placing goods in storage and recording their location
picking goods from their computer recorded locations to make up an individual shipment
sorting and packing orders
and shipping. A computer that records the location of goods and maps out routes for pickers plays a key role: employees carry hand-held computers which communicate with the central computer and monitor their rate of progress. A picker may walk 10 or more miles a day.
In newer fulfillment centers, items are stored on pods and brought to pickers by robots (Amazon Robotics). In the United Kingdom, initial staffing was provided by Randstad Holding and other temporary employment agencies. In the United States, many workers are hired as Amazon employees and granted shares of stock or sign-on bonuses, while others are offered temporary seasonal positions. When we have permanent positions available, we look to the top-performing temporary associates to fill them, said an Amazon spokesperson. Amazon acquired Kiva Systems, a warehouse automation company, in 2012.
Amazon fulfillment centers can also provide warehousing and order-fulfillment for third-party sellers, for an extra fee. Third-party sellers can use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to ship for other platforms as well, such as eBay or their own websites

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NBWGEC - J. S. Fry & Sons, Ltd., better known as Fry's, was a British chocolate company owned by Joseph Storrs Fry and his family. Beginning in Bristol in the 18th century, the business went through several changes of name and ownership, becoming J. S. Fry & Sons in 1822. In 1847, Fry's produced the first solid chocolate bar. The company also created the first filled chocolate sweet, Cream Sticks, in 1853. Fry is most famous for Fry's Chocolate Cream, the first mass-produced chocolate bar, which was launched in 1866, and Fry's Turkish Delight, launched in 1914.
Fry, alongside Cadbury and Rowntree's, was one of the big three British confectionery manufacturers throughout much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and all three companies were founded by Quakers. The company became a division of Cadbury in the early twentieth century. The division's Somerdale Factory near Bristol was closed after the 2010 takeover of Cadbury's by Kraft Foods Inc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K90G1D - Country of origin or place of provenance
In accordance with the FIC Regulations, the indication of the country of origin or place of provenance of a food shall be mandatory where failure to indicate this might mislead the consumer as to the true country of origin or place of provenance of the food. Consumers might be misled without this information, for example a Melton Mowbray Pork pie which was made in Italy.
Under the FIC Regulations there are specific origin rules which must be adhered to, including the Country of Origin for Primary Ingredients and Country of Origin for Certain Meats.
Find out when you must label your meat, fish or seafood product with its country of origin (Opens in a new window).
In NI, EU Country of Origin rules, as applied by the Northern Ireland Protocol (NIP), are applicable for food placed on the NI market. Where EU Law requires an indication of a Member State in respect to country of origin, food businesses must ensure that where food has originated in Northern Ireland, such indications should be in the form UK(NI) or United Kingdom (Northern Ireland).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3JX25 - John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England, produces beers including John Smith's, the highest selling bitter in the United Kingdom since the mid-1990s.
The majority of John Smith's sales are of the nitrogenated Extra Smooth product, although a cask conditioned variant is available nationally. A stronger variant called Magnet is also available in the North East of England. John Smith's Cask and Magnet are produced under licence by Cameron's in Hartlepool.
John Smith acquired the Backhouse & Hartley brewery in 1852. Following a series of acquisitions in the post-World War II period, the company became one of the largest regional brewers in the country, operating over 1,800 licensed premises. The company was taken over by Courage in 1970 who extended distribution of the brewery's products into the South of England. Courage was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle in 1995, and the operations were purchased by Heineken in 2008.
John Smith's Extra Smooth and Original are produced at the Tadcaster brewery, as well as a range of Heineken products including Amstel and Kronenbourg 1664. With a 38 million litre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country.
John Smith's became well known for a series of highly successful No Nonsense-themed television advertising campaigns, featuring the dour Yorkshireman character Arkwright during the 1970s and 1980s
The brewery brews 3.8 million hectolitres annually (1.3 million of which is John Smith's beer), and employed around 300 people in 2008. It has two keg lines, two bottle lines and one canning line. It currently brews and packages the ale brands John Smith's Original, John Smith's Extra Smooth and Newcastle Brown Ale, and the lager brands Foster's, Kronenbourg 1664 (Kronenbourg is a Carlsberg-owned brand brewed under license by Heineken in the UK), Amstel and Tiger

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3JX65 - John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England, produces beers including John Smith's, the highest selling bitter in the United Kingdom since the mid-1990s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23P1 - This image shows a pavement A-board sign advertising Scoops dog ice cream from Marshfield Farm. The sign promotes ice cream specifically made for dogs, describing it as a frozen treat that gets tails wagging, and features playful illustrations and bold, hand-painted style lettering.
Dog ice cream products like this have become increasingly popular in the UK as part of the growth in pet-friendly cafés, tourist destinations, and retail businesses catering to dog owners. Such signage is commonly displayed outside cafés, ice cream parlours, and seaside or rural businesses where dogs are welcomed.
Marshfield Farm is a well-known UK ice cream producer, and its Scoops range reflects wider trends toward niche, novelty, and animal-friendly food products. The sign combines humour and clear messaging to attract attention from passing dog owners.
The photograph works well for editorial use illustrating pet culture, small business marketing, dog-friendly tourism, and everyday retail creativity in public spaces.

Brewery
Joseph Holt have brewed on their site in the Cheetham area, to the north of Manchester city centre, since 1860.[2] Ale and lager malts are now delivered in bulk loads and stored in silos while speciality malts continue to be delivered in sacks. Between 15 and 500 barrels (4,500 150,000 pints) can be brewed per day, and a hopback is still in use, along with traditional whole leaf hops, to collect and clarify wort after boiling. All ales are top fermented in enclosed square fermenters using the historic Joseph Holt yeast strain, while lagers are fermented and conditioned in modern cylindroconical vessels. Joseph Holt have their own borehole on the brewery site to abstract brewing liquor (water) and are one of only a handful of brewers in the UK still to rack into 36 gallon casks, as well as hogsheads, the largest barrel size, carrying 432 pints (54 imperial gallons, 250 L) and weighing roughly 660 pounds (300 kg) when full.
History
Joseph Holt, the son of a weaver, was born in 1813 in Unsworth, a textile village near Bury. He worked as a carter at Harrison's Strangeways Brewery. In 1849 he married Catherine Parry, who helped finance a small brewery behind a pub on Oak Street, Manchester.
In 1860, he purchased the brewery site on Empire Street, Cheetham. His reputation in Manchester endures
in 2007, readers of the Manchester Evening News voted him People's Champion in the Greatest ever Business Leaders awards. In 1882, by which time he had established a chain of 20 public houses, Joseph passed control of the brewery to his son Edward. Edward Holt was later knighted, served as Lord Mayor of Manchester from 1907 to 1909 and was made a baronet in 1916.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG421P - Hobbycraft is an arts and crafts superstore retail chain in the United Kingdom. It is currently owned by investment group Bridgepoint.
Hobbycraft in Tunbridge Wells, using the former logo
It was started by the Haskins Group, a nursery and garden supplier in the south of England, and was bought by investment group Bridgepoint in April 2010.
The stores have been blamed for putting independent craft suppliers out of business, and the amount of choice for specific hobbies has been said to be not as good as in specialised stores. Hobbycraft reported a 10% increase in sales in the beginning of 2010, and opened two new stores, with the chief executive saying arts and crafts are a low cost hobby and he believed they would do well despite difficulties in the economy
In September 2014, it was revealed that Hobbycraft's profits had halved, due to chains such as Aldi, Lidl, Poundland, and online retailers such as Amazon moving into the craft market. Hobbycraft's CEO Catriona Marshall said that the company's profits had been depressed by a £3m investment on a rented warehouse in Burton-upon-Trent, on which Hobbycraft took out a fifteen-year lease
In August 2020, Hobbycraft announced multi-channel growth plans after a complete financial year in which its online revenues increased by 19%. The company has seen e-commerce turbocharged this year recording a 200% rise in internet revenues as the 12-week shutdown of Covid-19 channelled much of its web revenue.
In May 2021, Hobbycraft was revealed as the Fourth Best Big Company to Work for in the UK and the third Best Retail Company to work for in the UK by the Best Companies Awards 2021

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG42KY - Carpetright Limited is one of the largest British retailers of floor coverings and beds. The company is owned by Meditor.
History
The company was established by Lord Harris of Peckham in 1988 when he opened its first shop in Canning Town. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 1993. In 1999, the company expanded through the acquisition of selected shops from Carpetland and Allied Carpets. It acquired its first operations in Continental Europe in 2002, and in 2005 acquired May's World of Carpets. In 2007, it added the Storey Carpets business, a firm based in Sunderland, which had 54 stores at the time.
Cascade Investment, LLC, the investment vehicle of Bill Gates, acquired a 3% in the company in May 2008. Carpetright expanded again with the purchase of Sleepright UK in 2008. However, in June 2011 it announced significant shop closure plans and that year posted its first loss since 1993.
It was reported on 21 March 2018 that Carpetright was struggling after issuing several profit warnings, and that it was looking at possible shop closures. On 12 April 2018, it was announced that Carpetright would close 92 stores, with a total loss of 300 jobs out of the total workforce of 2,700, as part of restructuring measures
In May 2018, Carpetright secured a £15 million loan to provide short-term working capital. In November 2019, Carpetright announced that its largest shareholder, Meditor, had agreed to purchase the company. A bid of £15.2 million was accepted by the company, amid fears it could not pay off its debt. Carpetright have estimated that the company would need around £80 million to get out of its debt problems. The company's gross debt was evaluated at £56 million
Carpetright announced the departure of chairman Bob Ivell in January 2020, as the store returned to private ownership after more than 26 years. Several non-executive directors stood down from the board because of the takeover

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG43PT - Home Bargains is a British variety store chain founded in 1976 by Tom Morris in Liverpool, England, as Home and Bargain. It is the trading name of TJ Morris Ltd.
History
The retailer was founded by owner Tom Morris in 1976 as a single store called Home and Bargain in Old Swan, Liverpool when he was aged 21. The name was changed to Home Bargains in 1995, but is still colloquially referred to by its original name in the Merseyside area.
Morris, who was reported to have still owned an 89% stake in the business as of 2013, operates the company with his brother Joe. The business has since grown to become one of the largest privately owned companies within the United Kingdom, selling a variety of household items including food, clothing and games.
Customer numbers were estimated to be in excess of three million in February 2013, with items sold typically consisting of 70% regular lines and the rest as one-off product lines. The retailer was ranked sixth in a Which? list of 100 Top Stores, making them the highest ranking retailer within the United Kingdom
Home Bargains is also the supplier of similar discount chain Quality Save, whom it supplies all stock, shop fittings, trolleys and tills
The retailer was fined over £20,000 in February 2017, after being caught selling phone chargers that risked exploding. The chargers had been imported from China yet had not undergone sufficient safety checks by the retailer, despite Trading Standards having carried out five failed safety checks on the product.
Despite being able to produce a Chinese test certificate indicating that a sample product was safety compliant, Home Bargains subsequentially admitted to three offences of electrical safety through the sale of unsafe chargers during 2015

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4507 - Mothercare plc is a British retailer which specialises in products for expectant mothers and in general merchandise for children up to eight years of age. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE SmallCap Index.
Mothercare's United Kingdom subsidiary had over 150 stores in 2017, but by 2019 the number had been reduced to 79. In November 2019, the subsidiary was placed into administration, which led to closure of all the stores. Mothercare-branded products continue to be sold by Boots and the parent company continues to supply franchisees in other countries.
The company was founded by Selim Zilkha and Sir James Goldsmith in 1961. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1972.
In 1982, the company merged with Habitat to form Habitat Mothercare plc. In 1986, Habitat Mothercare plc merged with British Home Stores, to form Storehouse plc. In January 1996, it bought Children's World from Boots, and rebranded these stores as Mothercare World. In May 2000, the Bhs stores were sold to Philip Green, and Storehouse reverted to the Mothercare brand
In June 2007, Mothercare bought Early Learning Centre (ELC) for £85 million. In October 2007, it launched Gurgle, a pregnancy and parenting social networking website. In November 2009, Mothercare acquired the 50% of Gurgle that it did not already own
In November 2019, the company put Mothercare UK (and Mothercare Business Services) into administration. This meant all the UK shops and the UK website closed soon after. Mothercare International still trades profitably.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4657 - B&Q (short for Block & Quayle after the company's two founders) is a British multinational DIY and home improvement retailing company, headquartered in Eastleigh, England. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kingfisher plc. It was founded in March, 1969 by Richard Block and David Quayle.
History
1969 to 1979: Early growth
B&Q was founded in March 1969 in Southampton, England, by Richard Block and David Quayle, following the purchase and fitting out of a former furniture warehouse in the Southampton suburb of Portswood. Originally called Block & Quayle, the duo soon shortened the brand to B&Q as stock delivery notes and invoices were already unofficially abbreviating the name.
B&Q were reported to have a customer base of seven million in July 2016, of which it was estimated 75% use the retailer's website to research their desired products, prior to purchasing in shop. B&Q have customer loyalty schemes, such as the Diamond Club scheme which entitles members over the age of 60 to a 10% discount on Wednesdays on many garden products. However, no new customers are able to join the scheme, after changes were announced on 2 August 2018
The retail chain offers over 40,000 products across their three hundred shops and through their online presence. Reports in May 2007 suggested it was the second largest in Europe, and the fourth largest in the world (behind the Home Depot, Lowe's and OBI)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6P - The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow is a full-sized luxury car produced by British automaker Rolls-Royce in various forms from 1965 to 1980. It was the first of the marque to use unitary body and chassis construction.
The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1976, and the Silver Shadow II from 1977 to 1980. To date, the combined model run of 30,057 units manufactured is the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce model
A Bentley-badged version, the T-series, was produced from 1965 through 1980 in 2,336 examples.
The Silver Shadow was originally intended to be called Rolls-Royce Silver Mist, but was replaced with Silver Shadow at the last minute due to Mist meaning manure or crap in German. It was designed with several modernisations in response to concerns that the company was falling behind in automotive innovation, most notably in its unitary construction.
Other new features included disc brakes replacing drums, and independent rear suspension instead of the outdated live rear axle design of previous Rolls-Royce models.
The standard wheelbase Silver Shadow measured 203.5 inches (5,170 mm), 4,700 lb (2,100 kg) and had a book price of £6,557 in the first year of production.
The Shadow featured a 172 hp (128 kW) 6.2 L V8 from 1965 to 1969, and a 189 hp (141 kW) 6.75 L V8 from 1970 to 1980. Left-hand-drive models were coupled to the recently introduced Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox sourced from General Motors (GM). Pre-1970, right-hand-drive (RHD) models used a highly modified, aluminum-cased version of the original cast-iron 4-speed Hydra-Matic gearbox that had been built in Crewe under license from GM since 1953. From 1968, export RHD cars gained the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, and by 1970, the 4-speed unit had been completely phased out even in the home market

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN9Y - How investors got burned by Chilango's burrito bonds
As investors in restaurant chain Chilango's burrito bonds face losing all their money
With average interest rates on savings accounts falling to under 1% for the first time, promises of 8% returns are bound to attract attention. But don't be fooled into placing your cash in high-risk mini-bonds. A mini-bond is a high-risk form of corporate debt.
This is something investors in restaurant group Chilango are just discovering. More than 1,000 people bought £5.8m of its mini-bonds. The investments were dubbed burrito bonds because if you invested more than £10,000 you could claim one free burrito a week. In November 2018 MoneyWeek warned readers to think long and hard before you sink your money into the burrito bond.
Now the vast majority of those bond holders stand to lose their money after Chilango announced it is entering administration. They will be reliant on returns from the sale of its assets, which the company warned last year could lead to them losing 99% of their investment, says Sarah Butler in The Guardian.
This is only the latest example of the significant risk mini-bonds present. In 2015 Secured Energy Bonds collapsed, losing investors more than £7m. In January 2019 London Capital & Finance (LCF) went bust, leaving 12,000 investors facing a £236m loss. Mini-bonds are examples of high-risk investment products that should come with a health warning, Myron Jobson, a personal finance campaigner at Interactive Investor, told The Times. If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Mini-bonds are an unregulated product
The problem with mini-bonds is that while the marketing is regulated, the product isn't. This means that, unlike cash savings, money invested in mini-bonds is not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which will compensate you with up to £85,000 if your bank or building society goes bust.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKEYT - Bayer AG is a German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Headquartered in Leverkusen, where its illuminated corporate logo, the Bayer cross, is a landmark, Bayer's areas of business include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals
consumer healthcare products
agricultural chemicals and biotechnology products
and high-value polymers. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. Werner Baumann has been CEO since 2016.
Founded in Barmen in 1863 as a dyestuffs factory, Bayer's first and best-known product was aspirin. In 1898 Bayer trademarked the name heroin for the drug diacetylmorphine and marketed it as a cough suppressant and non-addictive substitute for morphine until 1910. Bayer also introduced phenobarbital
prontosil, the first widely used antibiotic and the subject of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Medicine
the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
and Yaz (drospirenone) birth control pills.
In 1925 Bayer was one of six chemical companies that merged to form IG Farben, the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. The Allied Control Council seized IG Farben after World War II, because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust, which included using slave labour from concentration camps. It was split into its six constituent companies in 1951, then split again into three: BASF, Bayer and Hoechst.
Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations. In 2006 the company acquired Schering, in 2014 it acquired Merck & Co.'s consumer business, with brands such as Claritin, Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's, and in 2018 it acquired Monsanto, a leading producer of genetically engineered crops, for $63 billion. Bayer CropScience develops genetically modified crops and pesticides.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF39 - Harris Tweed is a tweed cloth that is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. This definition, quality standards and protection of the Harris Tweed name are enshrined in the Harris Tweed Act 1993. For centuries, the islanders of Lewis and Harris, the Uists, Benbecula and Barra have woven cloth by hand, calling it 'clò-mòr' in the original Gaelic or 'big cloth'.
Originally, this handmade fabric was woven by crofters for familial use, ideal for protection against the colder climate of the North of Scotland. Surplus cloth was often traded or used as barter, eventually becoming a form of currency amongst the islanders. For example, it was not unusual for rents to be paid in blankets or lengths of cloth. By the end of the 18th century, the spinning of wool yarn from local raw materials was a staple industry for crofters. Finished handmade cloth was exported to the Scottish mainland and traded along with other commodities produced by the Islanders, such as dry hides, goat and deer skins.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, it being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1830, a London merchant received a letter from a Hawick firm about some tweels. The London merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the river Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders. Subsequently, the goods were advertised as Tweed, and the name has remained ever since

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252E - It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is based on a recipe that is several hundred years old that originates from the Swedish west coast, and in particular from Lysekil. The product is mainly made of salted cod roe (gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. In French, this type of caviar is sometimes referred to as caviar de Lysekil. Other manufacturers of similar caviar are Öhnbergs Kaviar (often regarded as the connoisseur's alternative, and currently also owned by Abba Seafood) and Boviks kaviar.
Kalles Kaviar has been a commercial success in Sweden ever since its market launch there in 1954. It is internationally recognized as a Swedish product, since many IKEA furniture stores worldwide feature this product in their food markets.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The tube design is well-recognized in Sweden and in Finland.
The product is also featured prominently in one of Ylvis's musical numbers from their Stories In Norway series on NorgeTV.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G702 - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin beer graffiti doll Action, DDR hairspray, and make-up,Germany. The image records DDR or East German security equipment and surveillance material, making it useful for editorial features on Cold War memory, state surveillance, the Stasi, civil liberties, museum interpretation and authoritarian control. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and.
