Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENG7T - A Holyrood Nurseries Warrington outdoor banner advertising childcare spaces available, photographed beside grass and a red brick nursery building in the Thelwall and Grappenhall area of Warrington, Cheshire. The green sign carries the Holyrood Nurseries and Thrive Childcare and Education branding, the website thrivechildcare.com and the local telephone number 01925 496955, with a smiling child pictured on the right-hand side. This image is commercially useful for editorial coverage of nursery provision, early years education, childcare vacancies, working parents, family finances and childcare affordability in England. Holyrood Warrington is listed by Thrive Childcare at 237 Thelwall New Road, Grappenhall, Warrington, WA4 2XT, making the photograph relevant to local childcare services in south Warrington and policy stories. The words Childcare Spaces Available connect directly with debates about nursery capacity, funded childcare hours, staff availability, parental work choices and the difficulty of finding places close to home. Government support can include Tax-Free Childcare, where eligible families can receive a top-up worth up to £2,000 a year per child, and Universal Credit childcare support, which can meet up to 85% of eligible costs. These schemes are often presented as help for working families, but the real impact depends on eligibility, provider charges, wraparound costs, opening hours and whether a nursery place is actually available. The photograph can illustrate Labour Government childcare policy, childcare portals, free or funded childcare codes, Tax-Free Childcare accounts, Universal Credit support, early years entitlements, nursery fees, cost of living pressure, parents returning to work and children's services. The low warm sunlight, grass foreground and suburban brick building give the image a clear local documentary feel, while the prominent banner makes it suitable for news, policy, education, business and family finance use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEG1G - United Utilities sewer maintenance work in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, showing a branded green service van parked on a residential street with its side door open, safety equipment inside and a high visibility utility operative standing beside the vehicle. The image records everyday but essential infrastructure work carried out in suburban North West England, where water and wastewater services rely on inspection, repair, cleansing and maintenance of local drainage and sewer networks. Visible details include the United Utilities logo on the van, a traffic cone for roadside safety, work clothing, tools and equipment stored inside the vehicle, plus nearby homes, gardens and autumn coloured shrubs that place the activity firmly in a domestic neighbourhood setting. The photograph is useful for editorial stories about public utilities, sewer maintenance, wastewater infrastructure, drainage problems, blocked sewers, water company operations, street works, environmental services, public health infrastructure and the practical fieldwork behind household water and sewerage services. It also has value for coverage of the wider UK water sector, including investment in ageing infrastructure, sewer capacity, pollution prevention, service reliability, customer disruption, local authority street works and the visibility of essential workers in residential areas. The scene appears to be taken in cool daylight, likely autumn or early winter, with damp looking roads, muted garden colours and workers wearing warm high visibility clothing. The open van and roadside cone give the image a candid operational feel rather than a staged promotional view, making it suitable for documentary use. United Utilities is the water and wastewater company for the North West, which makes the image especially relevant to Warrington, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria infrastructure stories, as well as broader features on privatised water companies, drainage maintenanc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T00PD4 - High Speed 2 (HS2) is a planned high-speed railway line and network of passenger train services in England. It will consist of a new railway line between the West Midlands and London, with a branch to Birmingham, and a network of train services that will use the new line and existing conventional track to reach their destinations in the Midlands, Northern England, and Scotland. HS2 will be Britain's second purpose-built high-speed line, the first being High Speed 1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel. The majority of the project is planned to be completed between 2029 and 2033. A 2019 review of the project, as then planned, estimated that it would cost up to £87 billion
however, this is estimated to have risen to approximately £100 billion in 2023.
The new line will run between London Euston railway station and Fradley in southern Staffordshire, with stations at Old Oak Common, in northwest London, and Birmingham Interchange, near Solihull. There will be spurs to a planned station in central Birmingham and a junction with the West Coast Main Line (WCML) at Handsacre, near Lichfield. The rolling stock will run at a maximum speed of 360 km/h (225 mph) and will operate on both HS2 track and existing conventional track
On 4 October 2023 the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that Phase 2 would be abandoned and that responsibility for the Euston connection would be removed from HS2 Ltd

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T00PD5 - New Canal Street
In preparation for the construction of HS2 Curzon Street station, there will be a partial closure on New Canal Street, Birmingham city centre.
New Canal Street, between Curzon Street and Fazeley Street, will be closed to all traffic, cyclists and pedestrians from 13 August 2023.
There are recommended walking and cycling diversions routes.
If you are travelling from Millenium Point, BCU and Eastside City Park the most direct diversion route follows the footpath around Masshouse Lane or the Clayton Hotel. Then it continues along Moor Street Queensway, around to the left to Moor Street and Park Street back on to New Canal Street.
There is also a diversion route along Curzon Street, around Curzon Circle roundabout and onto Lawley Middleway to Montague Street. You then follow Montague Street to the junction of Fazeley Street.
Travel tips
You will still be able to get to where you need to go, but consider the following:
Plan ahead and leave more time for your journey. If you travel around New Canal Street you may need to allow more time for your journey.
Think about your options. The partial closure of New Canal Street will mean that you may need to plan an alternative route. Please familiarise yourself with recommended walking and cycling diversion routes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX188N - Taken on 26 Aug 2023, this photograph shows Closed Biograd Diagnostics outlet, RT-PCR tester, vacated in 1, Market Gate, Warrington town centre, Cheshire, England, UK, WA1 2QN. The location is 1, Market Gate, Warrington town centre, Cheshire, England, UK, WA1 2QN. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. The closed testing outlet records the rapid rise and fall of high-street Covid travel-testing businesses after pandemic restrictions changed, leaving empty retail units and a visible trace of that period. Value Added Tax is a core UK consumption-tax subject, useful for business, retail, public-finance, household-cost and Making Tax Digital themes. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Biograd Diagnostics, BioGrad, diagnostics, RT-PCR, PCR, Covid-19, Covid19, Coronavirus, kits, certification, closed, company, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NBWGJ2 - Concept still life showing British pound banknotes and coins arranged around a paper label reading Pension, illustrating pension saving, workplace pension contributions and the investment of retirement money in England and Wales. The image uses familiar UK cash, including Bank of England notes and pound coins, to represent regular contributions into a pension pot, long-term saving, financial planning and retirement income. In defined contribution pensions, money paid by the worker, employer and tax relief is invested with the aim of building a fund for later life, although the value can rise or fall depending on markets and charges. UK workplace pension rules are based on automatic enrolment, where eligible employees are usually enrolled into a pension scheme and employers must contribute. Official guidance states that all employers must provide a workplace pension scheme, while MoneyHelper explains that the usual minimum total workplace pension contribution is 8%, commonly made up of employee contributions, government tax relief and an employer contribution. This image is useful for editorial and commercial themes including pensions, savings, retirement planning, personal finance, cost of living, investment risk, pension pots, employer contributions, financial advice, tax relief, pensions policy, household budgeting and long-term security. It can also illustrate debates about pension adequacy, low savings rates, ageing populations, retirement income gaps and whether workers are contributing enough for later life. The close-up arrangement of cash gives the photograph a simple, direct financial message without showing a person, making it suitable for articles, explainers, reports and web pages about pensions in England, Wales and the wider UK. The image should be treated as a general pension concept rather than advice about any specific pension product, provider or investment choice.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3J79R - Documentary stock photograph shows the blue Dental Health Practice sign on the front of Walton Road Dental Practice in Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire. The upward angle captures the sign, red brick frontage, windows reflecting clouds, a wall-mounted camera or alarm fitting, and a satellite dish, giving the image a practical high-street healthcare feel rather than a staged clinical view. It is useful for editorial features on dentists, oral health, NHS dentistry, private dentistry, dental charges, access to treatment, dental deserts, healthcare inequality and the difficulty many people in England face when trying to find an NHS dentist. The practice is listed at 44 Walton Road, Stockton Heath, WA4 6NL, and its own website describes it as a family-focused private dental practice offering general dentistry, implants, Invisalign clear aligners and cosmetic treatments. Older directory wording and dental contract analytics also connect the site with Walton Road Dental Health Practice, making the photograph relevant to changing patterns of dental provision and the blurred public understanding of what is NHS-funded, privately funded or mixed dental care. The wider national context is important: NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care launched a dental recovery plan in 2024 to improve access for new NHS patients, including incentives for practices and targeted support for under-served areas. However, the National Audit Office later concluded that the recovery plan was not on course to deliver the expected additional treatments by March 2025, and Healthwatch England's 2024 access research continued to highlight public concern about finding and affording dental care. For image buyers, this picture can illustrate local dentists, healthcare shopfronts, oral health services, private dental markets, NHS access problems, public health policy, cost-of-living pressures, family dental care, emergency treatment, consumer advice and the broader debate around whet

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P03Y - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

It was built as a private estate church towards the end of the 19th century but is now an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building
The church was built in 188283 for the brewer Sir Gilbert Greenall of Walton Hall. It was designed by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, the cost of its construction being £17,500 (equivalent to £1,880,000 in 2021)
The church is built in red snecked sandstone with Westmorland green slate roofs. Its plan is cruciform with a three-bay nave, north and south transepts, a two-bay chancel, a south vestry, and a south porch. The tower is in four stages with chequerwork in its third stage, a recessed octagonal spire and an octagonal north west stair turret. The porch consists of an oak frame on a 6 feet (2 m) sandstone plinth. The church is in Decorated style
The church was listed at Grade II* on 23 December 1983. Grade II* is the middle of the three gradings designated by English Heritage, and is given to particularly important buildings of more than special interest. The authors of the Buildings of England series describe it as a glorious estate church, exquisitely detailed and composed, and consider that the tower is one of Austin's best

Walton is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is located at the southwest edge of the town of Warrington, next to the parish of Stockton Heath. It is also close to Daresbury and Moore, although these are in the neighbouring borough of Halton. Walton is part of the council ward of Hatton, Stretton and Walton.
Walton is divided into Lower Walton and Higher Walton. Higher Walton is south-west of Lower Walton, and is the location of Walton Hall. The estate of Walton Hall and its surrounding gardens, previously owned by the Greenall family, was bought by Warrington Borough Council in 1941 and is now a park with a zoo and municipal golf course
Higher Walton was the site of a railway accident. On 29 June 1867 two trains collided at Walton Junction due to signal error. The collision killed eight people and injured 73

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMPM6 - Trellick Tower is a Grade II* listed tower block on the Cheltenham Estate in Kensal Green, northwest London. Opened in 1972, it had been commissioned by the Greater London Council and designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger. The tower was planned to replace outdated social accommodation, and designed as a follow up to Goldfinger's earlier Balfron Tower in East London. It was the last major project he worked on, and featured various space-saving designs, along with a separate access tower containing a plant room.
High-rise apartments and Brutalist architecture were falling out of favour by the time the tower was completed, and it became a magnet for crime, vandalism, drug abuse and prostitution. Its fortunes gradually improved in the 1980s after the establishment of a residents' association. Security measures were put in place and a concierge was employed, which led to lower crime levels. By the 1990s, the tower had become a desirable place to live, and although it still contains predominantly social housing, demand for private flats has remained high. A local landmark, it has been Grade II* listed since 1998, and has retained its distinctive concrete facade as a result. A fire broke out in 2017, but the concrete structure meant damage was limited, unlike the nearby Grenfell Tower. Trellick Tower has featured on film and television several times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GG9 - A plan to build thousands of homes on green belt land in Warrington has been approved by councillors at a meeting.
Warrington Borough Council's Local Plan will see 18,900 homes built by 2037, including 7,064 on green belt land.
The Labour-run council's leader Russ Bowden said building in rural areas was an absolute last resort.
Campaigner Helen Gurnani, who protested outside the meeting, said there was a need to preserve the land for public health and environmental reasons.
The authority was forced to draw up a new plan in 2017 after its last one was overturned by a legal challenge, and the new proposals saw the target for green belt land cut back.
The proposals were approved by the council, despite opposition from Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.
Six Labour councillors, who represent areas near Peel Hall - where 1,200 homes are proposed despite a government inspector's ruling last year that the site was unsuitable for housing - abstained from voting.
The wider plan will also see a number of large builds on both green belt and brownfield land, including 5,000 homes in a new garden suburb near the M6 Lymm interchange at Appleton, 1,600 on land near the River Mersey and 1,100 around Lymm, Culcheth, Burtonwood and other villages.
Liberal Democrat Ryan Bate said the plan would make lives poorer and destroy our environment, while Ms Gurnani said she understood the need for social housing on brownfield land, but we need to preserve our green spaces for environmental and public health reasons.
The council said a consultation would now be held on the plan before it is reviewed by a government inspector.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF4R - The Ministry of Agriculture launched one month on from the outbreak of the Second World War, one of the most memorable slogans of the whole conflict - 'Dig for Victory'.
From this point on, the whole of Britain's home front were encouraged to transform their private gardens into mini-allotments. It was believed, quite rightly, that this would not only provide essential crops for families and neighbourhoods alike, but help the war effort by freeing up valuable space for war materials on the merchant shipping convoys. Indeed, over just a few months, Britain saw its green and pleasant land transformed with gardens, flowerbeds and parkland dug up for the plantation of vegetables.
By 1943, over a million tons of vegetables were being grown in gardens and allotments.
During the course of the war, many propagandist moves were made to promote the importance of 'growing your own'. In addition to the circulation of familiar Ministry of Agriculture 'food flashes', literature and poster displays, anthems were also introduced. One such 'Dig for Victory' anthem went
Dig! Dig! Dig! And your muscles will grow big
Keep on pushing the spade
Don't mind the worms
Just ignore their squirms
And when your back aches laugh with glee
And keep on diggin'
Till we give our foes a Wiggin'
Dig! Dig! Dig! to Victory

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NJ - Peter Cooper (February 12, 1791 April 4, 1883) was an American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist, and politician. He designed and built the first American steam locomotive, the Tom Thumb, founded the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, served as its first president, and stood for election as the Greenback Party's candidate in the 1876 presidential election.
Cooper began tinkering at a young age while working in various positions in New York City. He purchased a glue factory in 1821 and used that factory's profits to found the Canton Iron Works, where he earned even larger profits by assembling the Tom Thumb. Cooper's success as a businessman and inventor continued over the ensuing decades, and he became the first mill operator to successfully use anthracite coal to puddle iron. He also developed numerous patents for products such as gelatin and participated in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
During the Gilded Age, Cooper became an ardent critic of the gold standard and the debt-based monetary system of bank currency, advocating instead for government-issued banknotes. Cooper was nominated for president at the 1876 Greenback National Convention, and the Greenback ticket of Cooper and Samuel Fenton Cary won just under one percent of the popular vote in the 1876 general election. His son Edward and his son-in-law Abram Hewitt, both served as Mayor of New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGTXBD - Dorney Lake (also known as Eton College Rowing Centre, and as Eton Dorney as a 2012 Summer Olympics venue) is a purpose-built rowing lake in England. It is near the village of Dorney, Buckinghamshire, and is around 3 km (2 miles) west of Windsor and Eton, close to the River Thames.
The lake is privately owned and financed by Eton College, which spent £17 million developing it. Additional grants, totalling £500,000, were obtained from Sport England, UK Sport, the DCMS and SEEDA in order to build the lake's finish tower. The project was completed in 2006, after 10 years of construction. Although it is primarily for use by the school, the facilities are hired out for rowing, as well as for canoeing, dragon boating, open water swimming and triathlon.
Since the lake was opened, a number of annual regattas that were previously held on the River Thames have been transferred to the lake. These include the Marlow Regatta in June, the Metropolitan Regatta in May/June, and the Wallingford Regatta in May.
The lake's dimensions follow the FISA rules for a rowing lake suitable for hosting a World Rowing Championship, World Rowing Cup or Olympic regatta:
Stillwater, with consistent water conditions
2,200 metres (7,200 ft) straight length for racing
8 rowing lanes, each 13.5 metres (44 ft) wide
Minimum water depth of 3.5 metres (11 ft)
A return channel allowing boats to move to the start, separated from the main lake by an island

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ5K6 - The National Rail Conditions of Travel (NRCoT) are a contractual document setting out the consumer's rights and responsibilities when travelling on the National Rail railway network in Great Britain. These replaced the National Rail Conditions of Carriage (NRCoC) as of October 1st 2016.
When a train ticket is purchased, a contract is established. The NRCoT are the principal terms of that contract between traveller and train operating company (TOC), which have been established by the Rail Settlement Plan, which is part of the Association of Train Operating Companies. The document is available for public viewing at the National Rail website, and also as a free PDF download.
Additional terms do apply to travellers, primarily from two sources:
For certain ticket types (such as those purchased at discount in advance), the TOCs concerned apply additional terms and conditions on top of the NRCoT.
The NRCoT cover the entitlement and restrictions of travellers, however they are not the only document to do so. Under the Transport Act 2000 (section 219), the Railway Bylaws also apply, though more generally.
Whilst the NRCoT are referred to on all train tickets, at stations, and on internet sites selling tickets for rail travel, very few travellers ever bother to read the document, unless they find themselves in dispute with a rail company on some matter. They are, however, of use to the consumer, because they afford considerable rights to the traveller with regards ticket validity. This has become a matter of significant public interest recently, in view of the complex and convoluted pricing structure of rail tickets in Great Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMAA8R - Robert Gordon's College is a private co-educational day school in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6.
It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB0FWK - The adult shop, seedy place to buy magazines, sex toys and DVDs
A sex shop or erotic shop is a shop that sells products related to adult sexual or erotic entertainment, such as vibrators, lingerie, clothing, pornography, and other related products. The world's first sex shop was opened in 1962 by Beate Uhse AG in Flensburg, West Germany, and sex shops can now be found in many countries. Many sex shops also trade over the internet. Sex shops are part of the sex industry.
In most jurisdictions, sex shops are regulated by law, with access not permitted to minors, the age depending on local law. Some jurisdictions prohibit sex shops and the merchandise they sell. In some jurisdictions that permit it, they may also show pornographic movies in private video booths, or have private striptease or peep shows. Also an adult movie theater may be attached.
Near borders of countries with different laws regarding sex shops, shops on the more liberal side tend to be popular with customers from the other side, especially if importing the purchased materials by customers to their own country, and possessing them, is legal or tolerated

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91FA9 - Three Wheelie bins for different uses in a street, Warrington, Cheshire, England WA4 2PL
The wheelie bin is a waste container on wheels designed to make it easier for users to transport heavy loads of refuse to the curb or other pick-up point. More recently it has application for transporting stolen goods on bin day in residential suburbs. George Dempster invented the Dempster-Dumpster system in the 1930s for automatically loading the contents of standardized mobile steel containers onto the dustcart.
This led to the classic Dempster Dumpmaster waste collection vehicle of the 1950s, but wheelie bins did not become commonplace until the 1970s. The term dumpster is frequently used as a generic term for a large MGB or the non-mobile variety (known as a skip in the UK or Australia) in the United States. In the US residential wheelie bins are also generically called Herbie Curbies.
The modern bin is a German invention of the 1970s in a patent held by Schneider, and licensed to other companies outside Germany. The smaller wheelie bins, for domestic or light commercial use, typically hold 120 to 360 litres (26 to 79 imp gal
32 to 95 US gal), with 240 litres (53 imp gal
63 US gal) being the most common. They have a hinged flap lid and two wheels on the bottom on the same side as the lid hinge. There is a bar behind the hinge on the top of the bin which is used to move it, or to hoist it up onto a garbage truck for emptying.
The 240 litre bin is usually considered to have the same capacity as three traditional waste containers. In the UK, wheelie bins for non-recyclable domestic waste are currently collected either weekly or once a fortnight, depending on the local Council's waste management policies.

Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring
