Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7NHH - Sarah* is a single mother.
My child's got autism and it's hard saying to him that we haven't got the money I've never had to say that to him before. He likes his PlayStation and he hasn't been playing on it as much because he's worried he's using too much electricity.
We don't use the cooker or the toaster because they use too much energy. We mainly use the microwave. We're cutting down on washing and not washing as much as we used to. I'm permanently watching what I'm doing and what I'm using, which we never had to do before.
We aren't using the heating at all. It's all onesies and quilts. We just can't afford to have the heating on.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG0P77 - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income. This is caused in part by a rise in inflation in the UK. While all in the UK are affected by rising prices, the impact has been felt most by those with low income. The UK government has responded in various ways, such as by making provision for a £650 grant for each of the UK's lower income households.
Both global and local factors have contributed to the UK's cost of living crisis. According to Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey, about 80% of the causes driving the cost of living crisis are global. These include the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, an ongoing chip shortage, an energy crisis in 20212022, a supply chain crisis in 20212022 and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The UK was reported to be among the worst affected among the world's advanced economies. In 2021, the UK's inflation was less than that of the US, but high US inflation was not generally experienced as a cost of living crisis due to the stimulus cheques that had been distributed to American households. Though in 2022 the cost of living crisis was also reported as being a global phenomenon, having impacts that include those living in the US, across Europe, and as risking an apocalyptic impact for those in the developing world.
Causes unique to the UK include labour shortages related to foreign workers leaving due to Brexit, and additional taxes on households. Factors that have worsened the crisis since 1 April 2022 include Ofgem increasing the household energy price cap by 54%, an increase in National Insurance, and a rise in Council Tax. Household income, whether from wages or benefits, has not generally kept pace with rising prices. In April 2022, UK real wages fell by 4.5%, the sharpest fall since records began back in 2001

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF3W - The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway. It was so called when taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the Glasgow Underground in 1936. Despite this rebranding, many Glaswegians continued to refer to the network as the Subway. In 2003 the name Subway was officially readopted by its operator, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). A £40,000 study examining the feasibility of an expansion into the city's south side is in progress.
The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow
that distinction belongs to a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1863, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a sub-surface tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.
The Subway runs from 06:30 to 23:40 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 18:12 on Sunday

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR5W1 - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the British Islands (encompassing the United Kingdom and the British Crown dependencies), denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: £
ISO 4217 currency code GBP). One pound is equivalent to 100 pence.
The pound is the official currency of the United Kingdom and the Crown dependencies of Britain. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England does act as a central bank in that it has a monopoly on issuing banknotes in England and Wales, and regulates the issues of banks in Scotland.
The issuing of retail-bank banknotes in Scotland is subject to the Bank Charter Act 1844, Banknotes (Scotland) Act 1845, the Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928, and the Coinage Act 1971. Pursuant to some of these statutes, the Commissioners for Revenue and Customs publishes an account of the Amount of Notes authorised by Law to be issued by the several Banks of Issue in Scotland, and the Average Amount of Notes in Circulation, and of Bank of England Notes and Coin held in the London Gazette. See for example Gazette Issue 58254 published 21 February 2007 at page 2544

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4309722723 - 'A view from the collection plate, St Mary and All Saints church, Great Budworth, Northwich, Cheshire.
A church in a delightful setting of thatched cottages and the George and Dragon pub. If you visit on a sunday, check out the cakes and afternoon teas served by the church helpers (summer only).
Parisioners use the collection envelope to leave an abbonymous donation. These days they can gift aid it etc, this was not the case in the 1960's when a ten bob not would be a quite vast sum and six pence (from two three penny bits) maybe more the norm to be dropped into the plate.
The nickel brass threepence was used between 1937\u20131970. A strange coin sometimes called 'thripp'nce', 'thrupp'nce', 'threpp'nce' or 'thripp'ny bit', 'thrupp'ny bit' by grannies and others alike.
The english brown ten bob note note here was issued by issued by the Bank of England. It started to disappear when the multi-edged fifty pence piece was introduced, a great silver medalion of a thing, larger than the one today in circulation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E1Y7HP - Close-up editorial and commercial finance image showing Bank of England polymer banknotes featuring King Charles III, arranged with British coins to create a clear visual representation of modern UK currency, everyday cash use and the transition to the new monarch's portrait on money in circulation. The photograph includes low-denomination and higher-denomination sterling notes together with loose change, making it useful for themes such as household budgeting, consumer spending, personal finance, inflation, the cost of living, savings, retail transactions and the continued role of physical cash in British daily life. As one of the first generations of UK banknotes to carry the image of King Charles III, the picture also has added editorial relevance for stories about the monarchy, national identity, the post-Elizabeth II era and the quiet but symbolic redesign of public currency following a historic change of reign. The combination of notes and coins helps the image work both as a straightforward illustration of British money and as a broader metaphor for economic pressures, value, pricing, cash handling and the small-scale realities of paying for ordinary goods and services. It is especially suitable for articles, blogs and news features on UK household finances, spending power, banking, pensions, welfare, benefits, interest rates, pocket money, cash savings and the resilience of coins and notes despite the long-term growth of card and app-based payments. The visible portrait of the King gives the scene a strong contemporary British context, while the plain close-up composition makes it versatile for educational, journalistic and commercial use. Strong stock image for finance journalism, economics coverage, monarchy-related reporting, budgeting advice, British retail stories and wider commentary on what money looks like in modern England and the United Kingdom, where cash still carries both practical purpose and symbolic national meaning in everyday circulation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDNX - A macro close-up image of four British two pound coins stacked neatly to reveal the engraved edge lettering reading Standing on the shoulders of giants. The inscription, taken from a phrase attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, is a defining feature of the UK £2 coin and is clearly legible along the milled edges. The coins rest on British banknotes, adding contextual depth and reinforcing the theme of national currency and financial value.
The warm metallic tones of the coins contrast with the softer, patterned background of the banknote, while the shallow depth of field draws attention to the precise lettering, surface wear and texture of the metal. Minor abrasions and patina visible on the coins suggest circulation and everyday use, grounding the image firmly in real economic life rather than a pristine studio abstraction.
The phrase Standing on the shoulders of giants reflects themes of accumulated knowledge, progress and inheritance, making the £2 coin distinctive among circulating currency. In a contemporary context, the inscription often resonates beyond its scientific origins, appearing in discussions about economics, public spending, innovation and the idea that modern society is built upon earlier generations. The stacked arrangement subtly reinforces notions of accumulation, layering and value over time.
This image conveys strong conceptual flexibility and is well suited for editorial use covering finance, economics, cost of living, savings, taxation and the British economy. It is also suitable for commercial applications requiring symbolic imagery of money, value, investment and financial heritage, as well as educational and publishing contexts where readable currency detail and macro clarity are essential.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG21X7 - The UK cost of living crisis is a period starting in 2021 in which prices for essential goods in the United Kingdom began increasing faster than household income, resulting in a fall in real income.
