Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCBE - David Stuart Sheppard, Baron Sheppard of Liverpool (6 March 1929 5 March 2005) was a Church of England bishop who played cricket for Sussex and England in his youth, before serving as Bishop of Liverpool from 1975 to 1997. Sheppard remains the only ordained minister to have played Test cricket,[2] though others such as Tom Killick were ordained after playing Tests
Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H
Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. In 1985 he was appointed as a member of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on Urban Priority Areas

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JT30 - Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. Jung's work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. Jung worked as a research scientist at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital, in Zurich, under Eugen Bleuler. During this time, he came to the attention of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. The two men conducted a lengthy correspondence and collaborated, for a while, on a joint vision of human psychology.
Freud saw the younger Jung as the heir he had been seeking to take forward his new science of psychoanalysis and to this end secured his appointment as president of his newly founded International Psychoanalytical Association. Jung's research and personal vision, however, made it difficult for him to follow his older colleague's doctrine and they parted ways. This division was personally painful for Jung and resulted in the establishment of Jung's analytical psychology as a comprehensive system separate from psychoanalysis.
Among the central concepts of analytical psychology is individuationthe lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual's conscious and unconscious elements. Jung considered it to be the main task of human development. He created some of the best known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex and extraversion and introversion.
Jung was also an artist, craftsman, builder and a prolific writer. Many of his works were not published until after his death and some are still awaiting publication

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGC6 - Patrick James Lally (February 1926 8 June 2018) was a Scottish politician who was Leader of Glasgow City Council and Lord Provost of Glasgow.
Early years
Pat Lally was born and brought up in the Gorbals, a poor district of Glasgow. He left school at 13, and was conscripted to the RAF after the War. He joined the Labour Party in 1950 and was elected as a Glasgow Corporation councillor in 1966.
Glasgow Council
Lally was involved in local government politics from 1966 to 1999. Although he was suspended from Labour's candidates list in 1977 in a housing allocation row, he returned to the City Chambers in 1980. He was council leader of Glasgow City District Council in the early 1990s and became Lord Provost of the new City Council in 1995, serving until 1999. During this time he did much to promote Glasgow on the national and international stage. He was credited as the driving force behind civic successes such as the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival, Glasgow becoming European City of Culture in 1990, and European City of Architecture in 1999. He also played an important role in the creation of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, which is sometimes dubbed 'Lally's Palais'.
In 1997 he and Alex Mosson were suspended by the Labour party in a votes for trips scandal. Both took the party to the Court of Session and had the suspension revoked. Lally retired from local government in 1999.
Pat Lally is nicknamed 'Lazarus', as a result of his numerous political comebacks.
Retirement
He quit the Labour Party in 2003, but later that year stood at the age of 77 against Mike Watson in Glasgow Cathcart to be an MSP as a health campaign candidate, and stood again to be an MSP in the October 2005 by-election, against ex-council leader Charlie Gordon, as an independent for the same constituency.
Lally stood as a candidate for the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party in the 2007 Scottish Parliament election on the Glasgow list. His wife, Peggy, died on polling day, 3 May.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGPHA7 - Gerrard Winstanley (19 October 1609 10 September 1676) was an English Protestant religious reformer, political philosopher, and activist during The Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. Winstanley was the leader and one of the founders of the English group known as the True Levellers or Diggers for their beliefs, and for their actions. The group occupied public lands that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops. True Levellers was the name they used to describe themselves, whereas the term Diggers was coined by contemporaries.
Gerrard Winstanley was born on 19 October 1609 and was baptised in the parish of Wigan, then part of the West Derby hundred of Lancashire. He was the son of an Edward Winstanley, mercer. His mother's identity remains unknown and he could have been born anywhere in the parish of Wigan. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
He moved in 1630 to London, where he became an apprentice and ultimately, in 1638, a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company or guild. He married Susan King, the daughter of London surgeon William King, in 1639. The English Civil War, however, disrupted his business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. His father-in-law helped Winstanley move to Cobham, Surrey, where he initially worked as a cowherd

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGPHB8 - Face of Wigan sculpture, Wigan
The Face of Wigan is a dramatic 5.5m high stainless steel sculpture of a face, which is destined to become another iconic image of the borough.
The piece is a new take on an old favourite as its creator, acclaimed English sculptor Rick Kirby explains: The face is a play on the many portraits and busts of the good and glorious' that adorn the parks and centres of every town and city throughout Britain.
The sculptured portrait is intended to represent not a single celebrity, but all of the inhabitants of the area, the very people of Wigan. These are the people who make the place what it is today, and indeed have the power to determine what will be the future.
The rear of the piece is a highly reflective surface set at different angles which will mirror fragments of people passing as well as the surrounding landscape.
Mr Kirby is known for a vast collection of striking public art works including Continuum' at Alexandra Park Lake in Hastings and Cross the divide' at the South Bank in London.
Funding for the project totalling almost £80,000 was provided by Modus Properties, developers of Wigan's Grand Arcade shopping centre as part of an agreement with Wigan Council to provide a major piece of public art in the town centre.
Louise Pearson, Development Manager for Modus says: We are delighted to have assisted in the delivery of this important piece of public art. Plus, we're happy to see that it is in a prime location to oversee the next phase of regeneration in the town centre.
Consultation about the piece took place with shoppers and visitors to the town centre over the summer of 2007, with people giving their thoughts and suggestions on a number of designs. At the end of the process, The Face of Wigan was the clear winner.
The Face came to its new home at The Wiend in Wigan town centre on Tuesday (December 9).
It will spend up to 18 months in this location before embarking on a tour of different locations in the borough

I was always a fan of the Icelantic led Sugar Cubes, meeting Steven McLaughlin doing a signing in my local bookstore, just meant this was my next post.
'Army of Me' is a song by Björk, released in 1995 as the first, and leading, single from her second solo album Post. The song also appeared, later in the same year on the soundtrack of Tank Girl as well as in the soundtrack of Sucker Punch in 2011.
The song is dedicated to Björk's brother. It shows Björk daring him to move up and find a job to keep his life on, and also for him to not fall into bad things and learn to defend himself.
The music video for the song was directed by filmmaker Michel Gondry. It opens with Björk, clad in a black karate gi, driving a large vehicle. The vehicle begins to sputter and slow, prompting Björk to check the motor. The vehicle's engine assembly consists of a mouth in which and all of the teeth appear rotten, comically exaggerated by a shaggy-looking man engulfed in a stench-cloud crawling out of the mouth and offending passers-by.
Björk touches her cheek, appearing to have a toothache, and proceeds to a nearby dentist's office. She is examined by the dentist, a anthropomorphic gorilla, who discovers a diamond in her mouth. The dentist attempts to steal the diamond for himself, but Björk leaps onto his back and pummels him, and retrieving the diamond, escapes the office. She takes the diamond back to her vehicle, all the while it multiplies in size until she is barely able to carry it. Björk tosses the diamond into the vehicle's mouth, apparently correcting its earlier affliction.
She then drives to a museum and proceeds inside, carrying a satchel containing a bomb. Sneaking past the museum's guards, she places the bomb on one of the exhibits, a man lying on an altar in a deep sleep. She then bolts toward the museum's exit, concerning the guards and other patrons. She makes it out of the building just moments before the bomb explodes. After the explosion, she re-enters the building to find the man from the altar, who appears to have been wakened by the blast. Björk hugs him, crying teardrops of jewels, and the shot fades to black, showing a message 'To Be Continued.'.
I had a nice chat with Steven, he was a genuine bloke and I realised that soldiers are in some ways they are detached from the (often wrong) decisions that send them to the various war zones.
The book is a rivitting read, as described here in an Amazon review: 'Squaddie is without doubt the most original soldier's story of recent times
it is long overdue and most welcome, particularly for anyone who has ever served in the British Infantry. I myself served eight satisfying years in the QLR and left as a Platoon Sergeant, but until now I had never read a book that accurately captured the Squaddie experience - both the good, bad, and truly awful bits too!
The level of detail that McLaughlin goes into is astounding, and whether he is describing weapons systems, basic training, battalion life or operational tours - his descriptions are always bang-on, totally convincing, and unnervingly accurate. Several times reading this book I had to put it down and have a little daydream, such is the level of personal recall it stirred inside.
Those of us who have been there will know what he is talking about
being beasted around Catterick by depot-screws, trying to reassemble an SA80 in the field and losing your camstud, scraping the carbon off a Gimpy when your hands are so cold you just want to curl up and die, platoon mongs and stag bitches, etc - I swear this book took me right back in an instant.
In this day and age of overblown and exaggerated Special Forces accounts it's refreshing to see an ordinary soldier embracing his experience and celebrating the sheer bloody grind of being an Infantryman. What I particularly liked about this book is the total lack of heroics and the grim honesty with which the author appraises his own fears and weaknesses - and he confesses to many. McLaughlin is his own severest critic and openly admits his failings, going so far as to show himself in an extremely bad light at times - unlike other `heroes' we could mention. '

Myles MacInnes (born 10 May 1978, Broadford, Isle of Skye, Scotland), is better known by the stage name Mylo, is a Scottish electronic musician and record producer.
He has provided remixes for Scissor Sisters ('Mary'), Amy Winehouse ('Fuck Me Pumps'), The Knife ('You Take My Breath Away') and The Killers ('Somebody Told Me'). One of his works was a 2004 remix of Kylie Minogue's no 2 UK hit, 'I Believe in You', which appeared on the single that peaked at no 3 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. His biggest chart success to date came in the autumn of 2005. This was when the single 'Doctor Pressure', a mash-up of his own song 'Drop The Pressure' and Miami Sound Machine's 'Dr. Beat', peaked at no 3 on the UK Singles Chart. The single performed well in the U.S., especially on the Hot Dance Airplay and Hot Dance Club Play charts, where it jointly made the Top 10.
'Muscle Car', the follow-up single to 'Doctor Pressure', was a hit in the UK and European dance charts, reaching no 1 on the UK Club Chart in November 2005, and no 38 in the UK Singles Chart. The video that accompanied the single courted controversy as it featured two supposed Chinese spies - actually played by British actors Bruce Wang and Alex Liang - inventing an electronic fly to spy on the American president, George W. Bush. Mylo did not appear in the video.

Bauhaus were an English band from Northampton between 1978 and 1983. The group were Peter Murphy on vox, Daniel Ash on guitar, Kevin Haskins on drums and David J on bass. After break up some members continued as 'Love and Rockets'.
Originally called 'Bauhaus 1919' (a reference to the German Bauhaus art movement of the 1920s, because of its 'stylistic implications and associations'), the date was soon dropped. With the ultimate dark and gloomy sound and image, Bauhaus I think, are generally considered the first proper gothic rock group.
Together for only six weeks, Bauhaus entered the studio for the first time at Beck Studios in Wellingborough to record a seminal demo. Five songs were recorded, one of the tracks from the session, 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', running more than nine minutes, was released as the group's debut single in August 1979 on Small Wonder Records as Bauhaus. It stayed on the British independent charts for two years. The song received crucial airplay on BBC Radio 1 and DJ John Peel's evening show, and Bauhaus was subsequently asked to record a session for Peel's show, which was broadcast on January 3rd, 1980.
This single, 'The Passion of Lovers' peaked at number 56 and came from the second album, 'Mask' (1981). The band employed more keyboards and a variety of other instruments to add to the diversity of the record. In an unconventional move, the group shot a video for the album's title track as a promotional tool for the band as a whole and not any specific song from the record. My original 7' has a lyric sheet if the listener felt they would like to sing along(!).
In my opinion Bauhaus never received the critical regognicion they deserved. To appreciate the band, check out the excellent live cut 'Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape'. Alternatively, track down 'Swing the Heartache: The BBC Sessions'. Oh, and tell 'em I sent you!

The story of St George and the Dragon was a legend brought back with the Crusaders and retold with the courtly appurtenances belonging to the genre of Romance. The earliest known depiction of the legend is from early 11th century Cappadocia, (in the iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church, George had been depicted as a Roman soldier since at least the 7th century)
the earliest known surviving narrative text is an eleventh-century Georgian text.
A dragon or Crocodile creature makes its nest at the spring that provides water for the city of 'Silene' (perhaps modern Cyrene) in Libya or the city of Lydda, depending on the source. Consequently, the citizens have to dislodge the dragon from its nest for a time, to collect water. To do so, each day they offer the dragon at first a sheep, and if no sheep can be found, then a beautiful maiden must go instead of the sheep.
The victim is chosen by drawing lots. One day, this happens to be the princess. The monarch begs for her life to be spared, but to no avail. She is offered to the dragon, but there appears Saint George on his travels. He faces the dragon, protects himself with the sign of the cross, slays the dragon, and rescues the princess. The grateful citizens abandon their ancestral paganism and convert to Christianity.
The St George's Cross is a white flag with a red cross, he is Englands patron saint and the feast day is on April 23rd. The Barmy Army are keen carriers of the flag, supporters of the England cricket team, who beyond many predictions have retained the Ashes this week. So its quite appropriate I have slipped a little bit of symbolism into this post. If you are one of my Antipodean cousins and have managed to read this far, 'Sorry! see you in a couple of years time...'.

Valley Girl - 'Frank Zappa' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Wikipedia describes Valley Girl (or Val, Val Gal) 'as a stereotype leveled at a socio-economic and ethnic class of American women who can be described as colloquial English-speaking, materialistic, self-centered, hedonistic, and often sexually promiscuous. Valspeak is also a form of this trait, based on an exaggerated version of '80s California English'.
'Valley Girl' is a song by the musician Frank Zappa and his 14 year-old daughter, 'Moon Unit Zappa'. It was released on Zappa's 1982 album 'Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch'. Moon supplied Frank with much of the content speaking typical 'Valley girl' phrases. Zappa intended to lampoon the image, but the single also helped popularized the valley girl stereotype in the states.
Sadly no longer with us, over 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, electronic, orchestral, and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.
Zappa was married to Kathryn J. 'Kay' Sherman from 1960 to 1964. In 1967 he married Adelaide Gail Sloatman, with whom he remained until his death from prostate cancer in 1993. They had four children: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen.
Zappa was very anti-censorship. In September 1985, Zappa testified before the United States Senate Commerce, Technology, and Transportation committee, attacking the Parents Music Resource Center or PMRC, a music organization, co-founded by Tipper Gore, former wife of then-senator Al Gore. PMRC consisted of many wives of politicians, including the wives of five members of the committee, and was founded to address the issue of song lyrics with sexual or satanic content.
He stated 'The establishment of a rating system, voluntary or otherwise, opens the door to an endless parade of moral quality control programs based on things certain Christians do not like. What if the next bunch of Washington wives demands a large yellow 'J' on all material written or performed by Jews, in order to save helpless children from exposure to concealed Zionist doctrine?'
Zappa's passion for American politics became a bigger part of his life. He had always encouraged his fans to register to vote on album covers, and throughout 1988 he had registration booths at his concerts. He even considered running for President of the United States. Now maybe that might have changed history, and saved a few lives.
Frank Zappa was truly a giant. Everyone must have at least one Zappa album, even if its the compilation, 'Strictly Commercial'. Give 'Sheik Yerbouti' and 'Joes Garage' a look too.
------------------------
In the Greater Los Angeles area, the term 'Valley Girl' apparently originated and still refers to girls from the San Fernando Valley. In context it is associated with a spoiled girl from an upper-middle class background who socializes with other 'valley girls' in cliques. In regions neighboring the San Fernando Valley, people will often call a girl a 'valley girl' or tell her to 'go back to the valley' if she is showing signs of materialism and/or idiotic behavior.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer parodied the valley girl, with the main character, Buffy Summers, often saving the males of the programme. Buffy's contemporaries Cordelia and Harmony more closely fit to the conventions of the Valley girl.
The nearest thing in the UK is the classic 'Essex Girl' stereotype. Someone please ask me and I will tell them the classic cucumber/Essex girl joke (Amber - step up to the plate dear!).
In Ireland apparently D4 denotes upper middle class females associated with shopping in Dundrum Town Centre, the upmarket shopping centre adjacent to Dundrum village. Ugg boots and fake tan features, so I am told.

A track to enjoy with a drink in your hand or a bar of quality chocolate, this one.
The word 'morcheeba' is meant to indicate 'the way of cannabis'. This originated from 'MOR'(middle of the road) plus 'Cheeba' (informal name of cannabis).
Morcheeba mix pop, hip-hop, rock and electronica and are based in the UK. They have consisted of Paul &
Ross Godfrey, Skye Edwards and recently Daisy Martey, among many guests. Their debut album 'Who Can You Trust?' on China Records was released in April 1996.
This track comes from 'Big Calm' the second album which was more mainstream and pop-ey.
This is the best album to start with Morcheeba, if you check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

This one a true trip back to 1979. This comes from one of the few albums ('The Crack') on my iPod with every track rated four or five stars. If you ever had any punky leanings, you should enjoy this. 'The Ruts' were a band that burned bright for a brief period. Imagine 'The Clash' on steriods and you will have the picture.
The Ruts were a reggae-influenced British punk rock band. You may remember them for the 1979 Top 10 hit 'Babylon's Burning'. An earlier single 'In a Rut' on the 'People Unite' record label, was not a hit but was much played and highly regarded by the UK BBC Radio 1 disc jockey, John Peel. My old black vinyl copy in a plain white sleeve, still has pride of place for me. The grooves almost totally worn down due to over playing.
They formed August 1977, the band consisted of Malcolm Owen (vox), Paul Fox (guitar), John 'Segs' Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums and ex-record shop manager). As part of Misty in Roots People Unite collective based in Southall in west London, the band were active in anti-racist causes and played a number of benefits for Rock Against Racism.
The Ruts' first single, 'In a Rut' was finally released on People Unite in January 1979, having been recorded back on 24 April 1978 at the aforementioned Free Range 8-track studios. It was backed up with anti-heroin tirade 'H-Eyes' on the B-side ('You're so young, you take smack for fun/It's gonna screw your head, you're gonna wind up dead'). DJ John Peel expressed his admiration for the group.
Debut album The Crack was produced by Mick Glossop and released in September 1979, reaching number 16 in the UK Albums Chart. With success came tradegy.
Malcolm Owen was found dead in the bathroom of his parents' house in Hayes, from a heroin overdose on 14th July 1980 at the age of 26. Prophetically, the B-side 'H-eyes' of 'In a Rut' was a song against heroin use, and two other songs, 'Dope for Guns' from the album The Crack, plus reggae lament 'Love in Vein' ('don't want you in my arms no more') were also anti-drug songs.
A year later, The Damned wrote a song, 'The Limit Club', about their deceased friend which mentions the 'velvet claws' that Fox talked about with reference to Owen's heroin addiction. The band continued as a very watered down Ruts D.C. (D.C. standing for the Latin term Da Capo, meaning 'back to the beginning') in a different musical vein. They released two albums, Animal Now (May 1981 on Virgin) and Rhythm Collision (July 1982 on Bohemian Records. Ruts D.C. split in 1983.
In July 2007 the band reformed for the first time in 27 years, and played a special benefit gig for Fox, following his diagnosis with lung cancer. Henry Rollins stood in for Owen. They were supported by Tom Robinson, The Damned, Misty in Roots, U.K. Subs, Splodge (Splodgenessabounds), John Otway
and the Peafish House Band which featured Lee Harris, (The Blockheads), Tony Barber (Buzzcocks) and Rowland Rivron, plus Edward Tudor-Pole and T. V. Smith. many characters from the British punk era. Fox died on 21 October of the same year, at the age of 56.
If you like this, for the sake of your iPod seek out 'The Crack' or 'Bustin' Out - The Essential Ruts Collection'. Tell 'em I sent you :-)
------------------------
In 1970's Britain particularly, the 'Sus law' was the informal name for a stop and search law that permitted a police officer to act on suspicion, or 'sus', alone.
It was based upon Sections 4 and 6 of the Vagrancy Act 1824 which made it 'illegal for a suspected person or reputed thief to frequent or loiter in a public place with intent to commit an arrestable offence' and effectively permitted the police to stop and search and even arrest suspicious persons, purely to prevent crime.
The law caused much discontent among certain sections of the population, particularly black and ethnic minority communities, against whom the police use of the law was particularly targeted.
The sus law was abolished following race riots in St Pauls, Bristol, in 1980, and in Brixton, London, Toxteth, Liverpool, Handsworth and Chapeltown, Leeds in 1981, because its alleged abuse was believed to be a contributory factor to these events. Following Lord Scarman's inquiry into the cause of the Brixton riots, the sus law was dropped. Apart from The Ruts, a number of 1970's bands, including Linton Kwesi Johnson (aka LKJ) wrote songs or included references to it.
Fortunately we live now in slightly more enlightened times. An improving ethnic and cultural mix is encouraged in our police force.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4840748755 - 'Fire Woman - 'The Cult' - Play this track here.
?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is a track by a band who pop up regular on my iPod, The Cult. Fire woman was written by singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. It was the first single released from their fourth studio album Sonic Temple. Its a steady fixture of the band's live performances.
The origins of the band can be traced back to 1981, in Bradford, Yorkshire, where vocalist and songwriter Ian Astbury formed a goth rock band called Southern Death Cult. The name was chosen with a double meaning, and was derived from the 14th century Native American religion, the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex or Southern Death Cult as it sometimes known, from the Mississippi delta area, but it was also a stab at what the band viewed was the centralisation of power in Southern England (including that of the music industry). As I know as a 'northerner' there has long been a perceived notion of a North-South divide based on social, historic and economic reasons.
The Cult's high water mark was in the late 1980's to early 1990's when hits like 'She Sells Sanctuary' stayed in the top 100 singles chart for 20 or more weeks. Since 1995 the band has split, reformed to tour, split again and recently toured the Love album (Love Live Tour). The band has officially announced the release of its first new studio recording since 2007, 'Everyman and Woman is a Star'. The new single is being released as a two-week exclusive through the iTunes store beginning this coming Saturday, July 31st 2010.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4784196740 - 'Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person...
Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures and according to speculation by literary historian Brian Frost that the 'belief in vampires and bloodsucking demons is as old as man himself', and may go back to 'prehistoric times', the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe, although local variants were also known by different names, such as vampir (вампир) in Serbia and Bulgaria, vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania.
This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism...While even folkloric vampires of the Balkans and Eastern Europe had a wide range of appearance ranging from nearly human to bloated rotting corpses, it was the success of John Polidori's 1819 The Vampyre that established the charismatic and sophisticated vampire of fiction as it is arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century inspiring such works as Varney the Vampire and eventually Dracula..
However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and which provided the basis of modern vampire fiction. Dracula drew on earlier mythologies of werewolves and similar imaginary demons and 'was to voice the anxieties of an age', and the 'fears of late Victorian patriarchy'. ..
The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, video games, and television shows. The vampire is such a dominant figure in the horror genre that literary historian Susan Sellers places the current vampire myth in the 'comparative safety of nightmare fantasy'...NB:

This is an old shot that I spotted while trying to dig something else out that an old friend had reminded me of. One of my most favourite portraits I have ever taken of a friend who I was on a degree course with. She now lives in Turkish Cyprus and teaches information technology (IT) at the university there.
The statue looks very bronze, although it was actually plaster. The fireplace was original, in the house situated behind where the old bus depot was in Fallowfield, on the edge of Moss Side, Manchester UK. Alexander Avenue used to terminate at the bus depot, google maps shows the depot intact, although it has now been flattened.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3812252751 - 'After sun down in the golden hour relaxing in the back streets of Luxor.
Usually containing only strong tobacco, the traditional waterpipe has many names in the near east: Hukkah, shisha, nargeeleh, nargile, nargilen or argeelah.
The pipe appears to have originated in India. Initially in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar (around 1542 ). Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani came from Baghdad to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'.
This new pipe for smoking soon became a status symbol for the Indian aristocracy and gentry. These days the Hookah west of Cyprus and east of Thailand is ubiquitous.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3711866769 - 'A bit about her from her Bio: In 2001, a friend introduced her to drummer Dave Heyes, who had recently finished a stint of gigs with Elvis Costello. After attending one of Maria’s gigs, Heyes quickly became a fixture in her band. In 2005, Maria came across producer John Kettle (Tansads/High Holy Days/The Marble Index). Together, they recorded a three-song demo. “Once I was in the studio and heard the magic of my music coming to life, I knew that this was where things were going to change forever,” Maria says. Within a few months, Maria had five major record labels and publishers interested. She set up a showcase in London and traveled there with the band.
“The sound was bigger and better than ever before. From there I got a fantastic reaction from the labels who wanted to hear more.” In the summer of 2006 Maria and Dave established the indie label JTC Records, and they released the single “Love Of My Life” which went on to receive national airplay. Soon after this Maria returned to the studio to record her debut album “Landslide”.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD3T - Stamps of George V were innovative from the very first. The first issue made was of the ½d (as shown here) and 1d values, which were in the same colours as used in the previous reign. Although the main design feature remained the same a central ellipse for the portrait, an ornamental frame, value tablet at the base and a crown at the top a three quarter portrait was used for the first time. Subsequent designs reverted to the standard profile however.
The UK's first commemorative stamps were issued for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. The pair of large-format stamps featured a lion in an imposing stance
they were issued twice, in 1924 and then in 1925, the stamps of each year being inscribed with the year of issue.[4] A second set of commemoratives in 1929 marked the 9th Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), held in London that year.
