Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M53 - Editorial photograph of a colourful Hello Wigan community mural painted on a brick gable end beside an outdoor bar seating area in Wigan town centre, Greater Manchester. The image shows local street art, red café chairs, a fenced terrace, painted flowers and the large word WIGAN, making it useful for stories about northern towns, civic identity, hospitality, nightlife, independent bars, urban regeneration, public art and changing high streets. The picture also has strong current-affairs relevance after the May 2026 Wigan Council local elections, when Reform UK made major gains across the borough while Labour suffered heavy losses in the seats being contested. Available reporting and election summaries indicate that Labour was badly hit, but also that Labour still retained overall control of Wigan Council after the vote, so the image should be captioned cautiously rather than saying Reform UK became the council's new leadership. The scene can illustrate a former Labour heartland reacting to a sharp local political shift, voter disillusionment, the decline of long-established party loyalties, right-wing populism, anti-establishment voting, and national pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following poor Labour local election results. The mural's welcoming wording creates a striking contrast with the harder political story of a borough where Reform UK support surged in May 2026. It is suitable for editorial use on Wigan, Leigh, Greater Manchester politics, the 2026 local elections, Labour losses, Reform UK gains, town-centre culture, community art, northern identity, civic pride, working-class towns, post-industrial communities, social change, pubs, bars, beer gardens and the relationship between local place branding and national political mood. The visible fresh green leaves suggest spring or early summer, with bright daylight and a changeable northern sky.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENK89 - Wigan's Voice exhibition display inside the Museum of Wigan Life, photographed in 2026, with large red, white and black entrance graphics and Wigan Council branding. The exhibition title has added contemporary resonance after the 2026 Wigan local election results, when Reform UK made major gains across the borough and Labour lost a substantial number of seats, although Labour still remained the largest group on the council. The image can be used carefully to illustrate the idea of Wigan finding or changing its political and cultural voice, but the exhibition itself should not be misrepresented as an election display. It was promoted by Wigan Council as a museum exhibition exploring the borough's heritage, culture and changing landscape, structured around nature's voice, traditional voice and community voice. The graphic panel reads Wigan's Voice and Until 25 July 2026, placing the photograph within a specific local cultural moment. The image is useful for editorial subjects including Wigan identity, local democracy, public culture, civic history, museum exhibitions, community voice, post-industrial northern towns, Greater Manchester politics, local government change and the role of museums in reflecting place and belonging. The recent election context adds news value, especially where stories examine Labour's weakening grip in parts of its traditional North West heartlands and the rise of Reform UK as a right-wing populist challenger. The scene appears indoors under museum or gallery lighting, with visitors, display areas and exhibition structures visible in the background. The photograph works best as a documentary image about Wigan's public identity and changing civic mood, rather than as direct evidence of any one political cause. It should be captioned with care, distinguishing between the museum's cultural exhibition and the separate 2026 local election result.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4MAD - Conspiracy placards displayed in Warrington town centre near Golden Square shopping centre show messages opposing BritCard digital ID and net zero, alongside a large claim that There is no climate crisis. The scene records how online-influenced narratives about identity systems, climate policy, government control and surveillance can appear in ordinary public spaces used by Saturday shoppers, families and pedestrians. The boards use bold warning language, simplified graphics and emotive claims about biometric data, personal freedom, public spending and the cost of net zero, making the image relevant to editorial coverage of misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy culture, political protest and public trust. The climate message should be treated cautiously as misinformation, not as a balanced scientific position: the Met Office states that there is overwhelming evidence that climate change is affecting the health of the planet and the wellbeing of billions of people. The digital ID message is also politically charged, mixing genuine civil liberties concerns with stronger claims about coercion and control. UK government material presents digital ID as a way to prove identity and access services, while parliamentary and public debate continues around privacy, compulsion, exclusion and data governance. This documentary photograph can illustrate climate denial, anti-net-zero campaigns, identity-card opposition, culture war politics, fringe street campaigning, public communication, information disorder, distrust in institutions and the movement of internet narratives into local civic life. The Warrington retail setting contrasts routine shopping with contested political messaging. The weather appears dry and overcast or shaded, with grey paving and street furniture giving the image a plain public-realm context. The photograph should be captioned as a record of conspiracy and misinformation material being displayed, not as endorsement of the claims.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4MAH - Conspiracy theory posters and placards displayed in Warrington town centre near Golden Square shopping centre on a Saturday, showing claims about artificial intelligence, Digital Prison, The Human Control Grid, digital ID, The Great Reset and The Agenda film. The image records how online conspiracy narratives can move into everyday public spaces, with printed boards and street campaigning placed beside a busy retail environment used by shoppers, families and pedestrians. The Great Reset is a real World Economic Forum phrase, but it has also become a recurring focus of conspiracy thinking, often framed as alleged elite control, globalist power or government overreach rather than a straightforward public policy discussion. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue notes that misconceptions around the WEF initiative have become a mainstay of conspiracy narratives in recent years and have circulated within right-wing and far-right online communities. This Warrington street scene may be useful for editorial coverage of misinformation, disinformation, fringe politics, anti-digital-ID campaigns, AI anxiety, surveillance fears, distrust in institutions, public protest, democratic debate, culture war messaging and the offline spread of internet-influenced conspiracy movements. The posters use strong warning language, dramatic graphics and fear-based claims, making the photograph relevant to stories about information disorder, propaganda techniques, political communication, social media influence and the relationship between digital rumours and local street activism. Golden Square's retail setting adds contrast between ordinary Saturday shopping and contested political messaging in public space. The light appears to be dull or overcast, with neutral paving and urban street furniture giving the image a realistic documentary feel. The photograph should be captioned carefully as a record of conspiracy theory material being displayed, not as endorsement of the claims shown.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91DFR - RNLI flag flying beside a red beach warning flag, a symbolic image for sea rescue, beach safety, lifeboat volunteers, coastal risk and the heated UK debate over small boat crossings in the English Channel. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution describes itself as the charity that saves lives at sea, providing lifeboat search and rescue, lifeguards, water safety education and flood rescue. Its position on Channel small boats is that lifeboats are launched when HM Coastguard reports people may be in danger at sea, and that maritime law requires vessels aware of people in distress to take reasonable steps to assist. That mission has drawn criticism from anti-immigration campaigners and some political voices who argue that rescuing asylum seekers may encourage crossings, assist people-smuggling gangs or blur the line between humanitarian rescue and border control. Supporters counter that lifeboat crews are not immigration officers, that people in small overloaded boats are at real risk of drowning, and that the moral and legal duty at sea is to save lives first and leave asylum decisions to the proper authorities later. The controversy therefore sits between public safety, charity neutrality, border enforcement, refugee protection, people-smuggling, national politics and media-driven culture war. The image can illustrate both the practical mission of lifeboat rescue and the wider argument about whether a charity should ever discriminate between casualties based on nationality, immigration status or how they came to be in danger. The red flag adds a clear danger and warning element, strengthening use for stories about unsafe water, beach hazards, drowning prevention, coastal storms, lifeguard advice and the risks of the sea. It is a strong editorial stock image for coverage of the RNLI, small boat crossings, Channel rescues, humanitarian duty, misinformation, anti-migrant protest, public donations, charity values and the difficult business of rescue ethics

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91ERX - Conceptual editorial image illustrating the No Kings protest movement in the United States, using a map of America and the hashtag #NoKings to evoke nationwide political mobilisation, civic resistance and public opposition to authoritarian style leadership. The phrase No Kings has been used by organisers and media reports to describe mass anti Trump demonstrations held across the US, framed around democracy, constitutional rights, civil liberties and resistance to concentrated executive power. This type of image is useful for editorial coverage of American politics, protest movements, national days of action, grassroots activism, public anger, democratic norms and the symbolism of nationwide dissent spreading across all 50 states. The map-based treatment gives the picture broad relevance for stories about federal politics, election tensions, civic identity, constitutional debate, social movement branding and protest culture in the modern United States. It also works well for wider search themes such as resistance, anti authoritarian activism, political messaging, campaign imagery, public demonstrations, civil society and the visual language of national protest movements. As a conceptual rather than documentary image, it is especially suitable for opinion pieces, magazine features, web headers, explainers and news articles that need a strong visual shorthand for a broad political moment rather than one specific rally or city. The wording also carries a deliberate historical echo, contrasting monarchy and hereditary rule with republican democracy and popular sovereignty. That makes the image commercially and editorially useful for themes including democracy under pressure, national opposition campaigns, protest branding, symbolic politics, public mobilisation and the geography of dissent across contemporary America. Because the movement has been described by organisers and news agencies as a nationwide protest mobilisation rather than a formal general strike.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9ANW3 - Close view of a bright Green Party Vote Green election banner fixed to railings in the front garden of a suburban brick house, with a Boycott Israel poster visible inside the window behind it. The image records a politically expressive domestic frontage, where party campaigning, local election messaging and international protest politics occupy the same residential space. The bold green sign, white lettering, front garden wall, hanging basket and window details give the scene a distinctly British suburban character, useful for editorial stories about doorstep politics, climate campaigning, progressive voters and protest movements.
The photograph works as stock imagery for coverage of the Green Party, local democracy, general elections, council elections, canvassing, political posters, campaign signage and the way private homes become public political statements. The secondary window poster adds a current affairs angle, connecting domestic political identity with boycott activism, Palestine and Israel related campaigning, consumer protest, ethical shopping, human rights campaigning and foreign policy.
It is relevant to articles examining how environmental politics can overlap with anti-war, social justice and international solidarity causes at street level. The composition is useful because the message is clear at thumbnail size: readable words, strong colour, domestic context and a real-world setting. It could illustrate green politics, environmental voting, community activism, political polarisation, protest posters in homes, neighbourhood campaigning, election messaging in England, voter expression, democratic participation, grassroots movements, consumer boycotts and the visibility of political opinion in ordinary streets. The overcast daylight, brickwork, window reflections and garden railings create a documentary feel, suggesting a cool, mild British day outside a lived-in home during an election campaign or period of heightened public debate.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR17BK - A close-up image of a Coca Cola Zero Sugar advertisement in Dublin, Ireland, defaced with handwritten black graffiti reading Free Palestine. The political message has been painted directly over the brand's red advertising panel, partially obscuring the original corporate marketing text and imagery.
The graffiti reflects wider international protests and expressions of solidarity related to the ongoing IsraelPalestine conflict, which has prompted demonstrations, street messaging, and political statements across cities worldwide. In this case, the use of a globally recognised consumer brand as a backdrop highlights the intersection between political activism, corporate visibility, and public urban space.
Such defacement of advertising hoardings is a long-established form of protest, allowing individuals to insert political commentary into highly visible commercial environments. The image documents contemporary street-level political expression in Ireland, capturing how global geopolitical issues are reflected in local urban landscapes.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use illustrating political protest, street graffiti, public responses to international conflict, urban activism, and the use of corporate advertising spaces as platforms for political messaging.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTT9 - Editorial concept image showing the words Hope and Glory in bright neon lighting set against a large Union Jack flag within an ornate gold frame. The composition turns a familiar patriotic phrase into a loaded political symbol, inviting interpretations linked to Brexit, British nationalism, imperial nostalgia, sovereignty politics and the continuing argument about Britain's place in Europe and the wider world. The red, white and blue neon text has the feel of a bold public statement, but the image can also be read ironically, as a commentary on older myths of British greatness, post-imperial identity and the clash between nostalgic patriotism and modern multicultural reality. This makes it especially useful for editorial themes around Reform UK style politics, populism, anti EU sentiment, culture war rhetoric, anti immigration narratives, English nationalism, flag politics and debates about whether appeals to national pride are harmless symbolism or part of something darker and more exclusionary. The visual impact is strong, with the glowing neon letters creating a sense of theatricality and confrontation, while the Union Jack backdrop anchors the subject firmly in British political and cultural discourse. Suitable uses include news features, opinion pieces, magazine essays, blogs and commentary about Brexit Britain, reactionary politics, national identity, patriotic branding, empire memory, right-wing campaigning, xenophobia debate and the tension between civic pride and exclusionary ideas of belonging. The image also works more broadly as a symbol of contested Britishness, where slogans such as Hope and Glory can be understood either as celebration or as critique, depending on the context in which they are used. A visually striking current affairs illustration for stories about political symbolism, national myth-making, contested patriotism and the ongoing reshaping of British identity after Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYYP - A red Vote Labour campaign banner is displayed in the front garden of a residential property in England, creating a clear editorial image of party political campaigning, voter support and neighbourhood-level election activity. The sign uses the Labour Party's familiar red branding and large white lettering, making it immediately recognisable as a campaign message aimed at passing pedestrians, local residents and voters. The suburban street setting, front garden, fence post, cloudy sky, terraced houses and distant railway bridge give the photograph strong documentary value as an everyday view of politics appearing in ordinary residential streets rather than at a rally, press conference or formal party event. The image is commercially useful for stories about UK elections, local council campaigns, general elections, party canvassing, voter identity, garden posters, political participation, campaign visibility, grassroots support and the way political loyalties are signalled in local communities. It can also illustrate wider themes around British democracy, doorstep politics, constituency campaigning, party branding, swing voters, political persuasion, neighbourhood opinion and the contest for attention during election periods. Because the image shows a campaign sign rather than identifiable campaigners or voters, it works well as a neutral stock photograph for coverage of election season, polling day build-up, political advertising, manifesto debate, local government, parliamentary politics and public engagement. The wet-looking street, overcast sky and ordinary housing backdrop add a recognisably British feel, useful for news, politics, civic life and social commentary. As a documentary stock image, it records a small but visible expression of democratic campaigning, where national party politics is translated into a simple front-garden banner on a local street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHBH - The Scottish and UK governments are going to court in a row over reforms that would make to make it easier for people in Scotland to change their legally recognised gender.
MSPs voted in December last year to pass the controversial Gender Recognition (Reform) Bill by 86 votes to 39.
But in an equally contentious move, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack then used UK government powers to veto the bill, saying it could interfere with equalities law across the whole country.
The legal arguments over Scotland's gender reforms
Scottish ministers have lodged a legal challenge at the Court of Session in a bid to overturn that decision and to have the reforms come in to law.
Presentational grey line
What is the current system?
The Scottish government wants to simplify and speed up the existing process by which people can obtain a gender recognition certificate - the legal recognition of a trans person's acquired gender.
At present, people apply to a UK gender recognition panel and typically must present a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
This is defined by the NHS as being caused by a mismatch between their biological sex (whether they were born physically male or female) and their gender identity (the way in which they see and describe themselves).
Applicants need to provide two medical reports, one from a specialist detailing their diagnosis and another listing any treatment or surgery they may have had to change their sexual characteristics.
They must also prove they have lived full-time in their acquired gender for at least two years - for example showing they have used a different name in official documents, or changed their gender on their driving licence or passport - and swear an oath that they intend to continue for the rest of their lives.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0J1 - A key worker, critical worker or essential worker is a public-sector or private-sector employee who is considered to provide an essential service. The term has been used[when?] in the United Kingdom in the context of workers who may find it difficult to buy property in the area where they work. The term was also used by the UK government during announcements regarding school shutdowns invoked in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to indicate parents whose occupations entitled them to continue sending their children to schools which were otherwise shut down by government policy, as well as teachers and LSAs at those schools.
A key worker is a public sector or private sector employee who is considered to provide an essential service.
Key workers jobs that cannot be done remotely:-
Energy. Many of the jobs in this field, which includes mining and oil extraction, cannot be done remotely.
First responders. These are the people communities depend on in emergencies, such as paramedics, firefighters and police.
Education and child care. Making sure children can grow academically even during a pandemic means vaccinating teachers, their support staff, and daycare employees.
Agriculture and food production. Many of the outbreaks at the onset of the pandemic were in meatpacking facilities and other food-processing plants.
Critical retail. (i.e. grocery stores, hardware stores, auto mechanics etc.). Keeping supermarket employees safe makes it possible for others to stay fed while restaurants are temporarily shut down.
Critical trades. (i.e. construction workers, electricians, plumbers, etc.)
Manufacturing. These jobs (producing goods) cannot be done remotely.
Corrections workers. Prisons are the types of closed facilities where the coronavirus can spread quickly.
Postal Service workers. This group makes sure vital packages get delivered, along with providing other key services.
Public transit workers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXBW - Gary Donnelly is an Irish republican politician and an independent member of the Derry and Strabane District Council since 2014
Republican activity - Donnelly is a member of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement (32CSM)
Arrests and convictions
In March 2010, Donnelly was convicted of assaulting a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer and sentenced to seven months imprisonment. While serving his sentence Donnelly briefly went on hunger strike following his removal from the republican wing of HM Prison Maghaberry. Prison officials explained the decision claiming Donnelly had received a death threat from the Real IRA, a charge Donnelly denied.
August 2010 Donnelly was charged under the auspices of terrorism legislation in connection with three pipe bomb attacks in September 2009
November 2014, Donnelly, along with two co-defendants, was sentenced to six-months in prison for causing criminal damage by writing an anti-internment slogan on the historic walls of Derry. Donnelly's solicitor asserted that writing political slogans had been a long-standing tradition and there were no objections from local residents to the graffiti.
July 2015, following a three-volley salute at the funeral of Patsy O'Hara's mother, Donnelly's house was searched by the PSNI. No arrests were made
On 24 May 2014, Donnelly was elected to the Derry and Strabane District Council. Although a purported member of the 32CSM at the time, Donnelly ran as an independent and received 1,154 votes.
He supported independent candidate Thomas Pringle in the Donegal constituency in the 2016 general election.
Donnelly was re-elected to his council seat on 4 May 2019 with 1,374 first-preference votes.
On 20 May 2023, Donnelly was elected to a third term on the council, topping the poll with 1,868 first-preference votes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JDN - Identity Ireland is a minor political party in Ireland. A right-wing to far-right party, it has no representation at local or national level. It was launched in Dublin on 22 July 2015. Its founders are Gary Allen, Peter O'Loughlin and Alan Tighe. O'Loughlin, the party's national spokesperson, contested the 2016 Irish general election and 2019 European Parliament election
Identity Ireland states that it favours Irish sovereignty by leaving the European Union and a return to the Irish pound. The party supports a controlled border policy in order to curtail the immigration that, it says, is putting strain on the Irish welfare system. It also supports more careful vetting of incoming asylum seekers. It supports the Irish branch of Pegida, and has joined the Fortress Europe coalition. It advocates the introduction of a two strike law for serious offences, as well as the re-introduction of penal labour. It supports keeping Ireland's neutrality. It also advocated in favour of Brexit
Identity Ireland has been accused of being racist. Some of its press conferences and meetings, and its launch, have been disrupted by protesters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM62AX - RISE is the official name given to the public art sculpture located at Broadway Roundabout in Belfast, Northern Ireland. However, it has been given unofficial, colloquial titles such as the Balls of the Falls, the Testes on the Westes and the Westicles. These names have been derived by both the sculptures location on Broadway Junction (located above the A12 Westlink and in close proximity to the Falls Road) and in reference to its shape made from two, spherical, metal structures.
The RISE sculpture was designed by Wolfgang Buttress and consists of a geodesic sphere suspended inside a larger, 30 m (98 ft) diameter sphere and stands at an overall height of 37.5 m (123 ft). Geodesic refers to the shortest path between two points on a curve so that in the case of the RISE sculpture, adjacent connections on each of the spheres are connected using straight bars, thereby minimising the distance between two points. At 30m wide and 37.5m tall, RISE is the biggest public art sculpture in Belfast.
RISE was commissioned by Belfast City Council and built in 2011 as part of a multimillion-pound road improvement programme. It now sits atop of the A12 Westlink Underpass (a grade-separated junction) where, according to a 2009 NI assembly report, sees approximately 80,000 cars on average flow past it each day.
Concept and Construction
RISE during construction
The globe-shaped, white and silver steel sculpture is a representation of a new sun rising to celebrate a new chapter in the history of Belfast. The inner sphere represents the sun rising over the bogs and the outer sphere represents the sun's halo, while the angled, steel supports are to represent the reeds of the bog meadows that extended more widely across the area before it was developed. Due to the Belfast's history of conflict and the location of the Westlink separating some of Belfast's unionist and nationalist communities, the sculpturer noted that it was important to design a sculpture that could be viewed in

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM62KD - Black Mountain is a large hill which overlooks the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland. With a height of 1,275 ft (389 m), it towers over most of west Belfast and is part of the Belfast Hills. Its name is probably derived from the adjoining mountain called Divis (from Irish Dubhais 'black ridge'), and they may have been seen as one mountain in the past. Black Mountain transmitting station is on the summit.
Black Mountain is composed of basalt with limestone underneath, as is Cavehill further north. There have been flint finds in the area, which also contains raths, deserted farms and overgrown paths joining the fields and homesteads and trails scattered over the mountain.
For many years people have lobbied for the preservation of the Belfast Hills, hoping to bring an end to many years of quarrying. The quarry is steep and deeply excavated and the basalt from it is used mostly for road stone. The hill is under National Trust guardianship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDH95B - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.

What a difference five days make eh?
A lot of people mistakenly regard the Liberals as the new kids on the block these days, while in reality at core they were the old guard with the Tories back in the late victorian era. When the left wing Labour party arrived, quite soon ping pong between Tory and Labour administrations have ensued.
While many councils are liberal led, however the first past the post system is an unfortunate barrier to seeing a majority liberal party prime minister at Westminster. One which the two main parties may be reluctant to dismantle if a hung parliament results tonight and Nick Clegg assumes his role as 'Kingmaker'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4601233205 - 'Well, this will be one year when I cannot vote for the 'Official Monster Raving Loony Party'. Lord Sutch (or David Edward Sutch aka the 3rd Earl of Harrow) being no longer with us. With his death 16th June 1999, one strand of eccentric British tradition ended.
I once met him before the 1997 election. I had a short chat at a gig in Macclesfield when photographing a rock band who was supporting him. He certainly had many contacts in the music world, as this old vinyl album of mine testifies.
In 1963, Sutch and his manager, Reginald Calvert, took over Shivering Sands Army Fort, a Maunsell Fort off Southend. From there in 1964 they started 'Radio Sutch'. It was the time of pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline. Broadcasts consisted of music and Mandy Rice-Davies reading Lady Chatterley's Lover. Sutch tired of the station, and sold it to Calvert, which was renamed 'Radio City', which lasted until 1967. In 1966 Calvert was shot dead by Oliver Smedley over a financial dispute. Smedley was acquitted on grounds of self-defence. About this time Ritchie Blackmore left his band, 'The Savages' to form prog rockers 'Deep Purple'.
In 1968, Sutch toured parts of the United States in the Rolls Royce on this cover, with a Union Jack Flag on the roof and a trailer of Marshall amplifiers to sell, hitched to the back. This album 'Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends' was named in a 1998 BBC poll as the worst album of all time, a status it also held in Colin Larkin's book The Top 1000 Albums of All Time. All despite the fact that Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins performed on it and helped write it.
In the Rolling Stones song 'Get Off of My Cloud', the guy who shows up 'All dressed up just like a Union Jack' was infact Lord Sutch, uninvited in Mick Jagger's room.
He founded the Official Monster Raving Loony Party in the UK 1983 and fought the Bermondsey by-election. In his career he contested over 40 elections, rarely threatening the major candidates, but often getting a respectable number of votes. He was easily recognisable at election counts by his flamboyant clothes. It was after he polled several hundred votes in Margaret Thatcher's Finchley constituency in 1983 that the deposit paid by candidates was raised from £150 to £500. This did little to deter Sutch, who increased the concerts he performed to pay for campaigns.
His most significant contribution to politics came at the Bootle by-election in 1990. He secured more votes than the candidate of the Continuing Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by former Foreign Secretary David Owen. Within days the SDP dissolved itself. In 1993, when the British National Party gained its first local councillor, Derek Beackon, Sutch pointed out that the Official Monster Raving Loony Party already had six.

George Orwell 1984 (one of my favourite books), Keep Britain safe (slightly union jack and fascist), danger Child Vaccine (toxic Waste) over his eye.
I notice that George has a tie on here, as Chumbawamba once wrote, 'just cos you have a tie on doesn't make you important'. I notice that you rarely see Mr C in a tie, most likely a white shirt opened at the first button. Thats what the courses tell you to do in order to reach out to the shell suit clasees. I would guess George (or Gideon as he was christened) could drop this informality for Tatton.
George is heir to the Osborne baronetcy (of Ballentaylor in the County of Waterford, Ireland). This makes him a part of what is known in Ireland as the Ascendancy, the old Anglo-Irish aristocracy. His father, Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet, is co-founder of the fabric and wallpapers designers, Osborne &
Little. Osborne's wealth is estimated at £4.3m by the New Statesman www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2009/10/oxford-universit... . He is also reported to be next in line to inherit a substantial share of Osborne &
Little, his father's luxury wallpaper company, which is thought to be worth over £1 billion. so he would fit well in one of Britains safest Tory seats here in Tatton. Hopefully he would look to the needs of his constituents lower down the social ladder, customers of Cheshire Peaks &
Plains Housing Trust, Contour Homes or Great Places Housing Group as well as the more affluent.
After achieving an upper 2nd class degree at Magdalen College at Oxford University and being a member of the Bullingdon Club, a private dining club of Oxford University students (which was 'infamous for riotous behaviour' and was open only to sons of aristocratic families and the wealthy. Osborne's friends David Cameron and Nat Rothschild were also members of the club), he tried to persue a career as a journalist, but then moved to a vacent position at Conservative Central Office. he cut his teeth on the Prime Minister's Questions team for the various Conservative incumbent leaders Hague, Howard and cameron. Indeed, Osbourne and Cameron are godfathers to each other's children, so this may make his position safer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BE34EK - The Scottish Parliament Building (Scottish Gaelic: Pàrlamaid na h-Alba, Scots: Scots Pairlament Biggin) is the home of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Edinburgh. Construction of the building commenced in June 1999 and the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) held their first debate in the new building on 7 September 2004. The formal opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 October 2004. Enric Miralles, the Spanish architect who designed the building, died before its completion.
From 1999 until the opening of the new building in 2004, committee rooms and the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament were housed in the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland located on The Mound in Edinburgh. Office and administrative accommodation in support of the Parliament were provided in buildings leased from the City of Edinburgh Council. The new Scottish Parliament Building brought together these different elements into one purpose-built parliamentary complex, housing 129 MSPs and more than 1,000 staff and civil servants.
From the outset, the building and its construction have been controversial. The choices of location, architect, design, and construction company were all criticised by politicians, the media and the Scottish public. Scheduled to open in 2001, it did so in 2004, more than three years late with an estimated final cost of £414 million, many times higher than initial estimates of between £10m and £40m. A major public inquiry into the handling of the construction, chaired by the former Lord Advocate, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, was established in 2003. The inquiry concluded in September 2004 and criticised the management of the whole project from the realisation of cost increases down to the way in which major design changes were implemented. Despite these criticisms and a mixed public reaction, the building was welcomed by architectural academics and critics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF21Y9 - A moody and atmospheric view of the Bobby Sands mural painted on the side of a Sinn Fein office on the Falls Road in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The mural depicts Bobby Sands, Irish republican hunger striker and Member of Parliament, whose death in 1981 became a defining moment in the history of the Troubles. Rendered in a muted, desaturated palette under heavy cloud, the image conveys the weight of political memory embedded within the urban streetscape.
The mural is framed by surrounding terraced housing and everyday street infrastructure, grounding this powerful symbol of conflict and resistance within a lived residential environment. In the foreground, children walk past the mural, introducing a striking contrast between the legacy of political struggle and the ordinariness of daily life. This juxtaposition reflects how history, identity and memory coexist within communities in West Belfast, where murals remain a prominent form of public expression.
Political murals along the Falls Road have long functioned as visual statements of identity, commemoration and resistance. They are part of a wider tradition of wall art in Northern Ireland that communicates historical narratives outside formal institutions, often serving as unofficial memorials and teaching tools for successive generations. The dark, brooding sky and subdued tones reinforce themes of loss, endurance and unresolved history.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Northern Ireland politics, the Troubles, Irish republican history, peace and reconciliation, public art, memory and identity, as well as commercial editorial projects examining contested histories, urban communities and the long-term social impact of political conflict.
