Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4K - A rear view of a Police Liaison Officer wearing a high-visibility vest marked Police Liaison Officer while overseeing crowd movement during Notting Hill Carnival in West London. The image was taken in late summer, with strong daylight, blue sky and dry conditions typical of August weather in London.
In the background, large crowds of carnival-goers, event stewards and vehicles are visible, illustrating the scale and complexity of managing one of Europe's largest street festivals. Police liaison officers are deployed to act as a bridge between the police, event organisers and the public, focusing on communication, reassurance and de-escalation rather than enforcement.
Notting Hill Carnival is a major cultural event celebrating Caribbean heritage and London's diversity, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Images such as this are commonly used editorially to illustrate themes of public order, community policing, major event management, urban safety and multicultural life in the UK capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWX0 - A close view of a traditional blue Garda lamp displaying the crest of An Garda S??och?na, Ireland's national police service. Mounted on a decorative metal bracket, the illuminated lantern is a long-established visual marker used to identify Garda stations and police premises throughout Ireland.
The Garda lamp is an instantly recognisable element of Irish civic streetscapes, symbolising state authority, public order and community policing. Its use dates back to the early twentieth century and continues today as both a functional and symbolic feature, particularly in urban centres such as Dublin.
Photographed against a backdrop of city architecture, the image captures a small but culturally significant detail of Ireland's public realm. Such visual markers are often used editorially to illustrate news stories, policing issues, governance, Irish institutions, or urban life in Dublin and other Irish cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFD - Ask for Angela
The Met and the Mayor of London have joined together with Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network, and licensed venues across the capital to help keep people safe while enjoying a night out.
The safety initiative ?Ask for Angela' is being rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses across London and other cities. People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ?Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, seeing them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.
Venues that support ?Ask for Angela' have been given Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training. Delivered by the Met's licensing officers and Safer Sounds, it gives staff the ability to help customers who may be in a situation that makes them vulnerable or unsafe.
?Ask for Angela' was originally developed by Lincolnshire County Council and adopted by the Met in 2016 as a localised initiative by its police licensing officers. The introduction of WAVE training in 2017 underpinned the delivery of Ask for Angela and more venues began to take on the initiative.
Organisations can receive WAVE training through the Safer Sounds Partnership or via their local licensing team. The training explores what vulnerability is, how to identify it and appropriate interventions. A range of online assets and webinars are available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER1D - A penalty charge notice from Cardiff council, is an official notification that you have been found to have committed a minor offence, for which there is a standard penalty charge. PCN are used to streamline the process of penalising minor offenders, without the expense and complication of legal proceedings.
Any offence that has a standard penalty charge, is not an offence that you can be prosecuted for. A penalty charge is not the same thing as an enforceable fine. That being said, you can't just ignore a PCN. You will need to either appeal against it or pay it.
Cardiff council issues Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) for a number of reasons. However, the most common reasons why you might either find one attached to your vehicle or be sent one by post, are for minor traffic rule infractions and parking offences.
If you are issued with a PCN, what do you need to do with it? Can you ignore it, or do you have to pay it? Or is there some way to make an appeal against the PCN?
You can't pay a penalty charge notice in instalments. There are three ways to pay a Cardiff council penalty charge notice. You can pay online, as long as you know the PCN number and have a credit or debit card. There is also a payment hotline that is open 7 days a week, around the clock. You can call 029 2044 5900 and give the PCN number, and then pay using a payment card. Lastly, you can make out a cheque or postal order to Cardiff Council, write the PCN number on the back, and then post it to the following address:
Parking Services, PO Box 47, Cardiff, CF11 1QB

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGHXBK - The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA, Irish: Arm Saoirse N?isi?nta na h??ireann) is an Irish republican socialist paramilitary group formed on 10 December 1974, during the 30-year period of conflict known as the Troubles. The group seeks to remove Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom and create a socialist republic encompassing all of Ireland. With membership estimated at 80?100 at their peak, it is the paramilitary wing of the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP).
The INLA was founded by former members of the Official Irish Republican Army who opposed that group's ceasefire. It was initially known as the People's Liberation Army or People's Republican Army. The INLA waged a paramilitary campaign against the British Army and Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) in Northern Ireland. It was also active to a lesser extent in the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and mainland Europe. High-profile attacks carried out by the INLA include the Droppin Well bombing, the 1994 Shankill Road killings and the assassinations of Airey Neave in 1979 and Billy Wright in 1997. However, it was smaller and less active than the main republican paramilitary group, the Provisional IRA. It was also weakened by feuds and internal tensions. Members of the group used the covernames People's Liberation Army, People's Republican Army, and Catholic Reaction Force[8] for attacks its volunteers carried out but the INLA did not want to claim responsibility for. The INLA became a proscribed group in the United Kingdom on 3 July 1979 under the 1974 Prevention of Terrorism Act.
After a 24-year armed campaign, the INLA declared a ceasefire on 22 August 1998. In August 1999, it stated that There is no political or moral argument to justify a resumption of the campaign. In October 2009, the INLA formally vowed to pursue its aims through peaceful political means and began decommissioning its weapons.

As well as having jurisdiction across the national rail network, the BTP is also responsible for policing:
Croydon Tramlink
Docklands Light Railway
London Cable Car
Glasgow Subway
London Underground
Tyne and Wear Metro (between Fellgate and South Hylton)
West Midlands Metro
This amounts to around 10,000 miles (16,000 km) of track and more than 3,000 railway stations and depots. There are more than one billion passenger journeys annually on the main lines alone.
In addition, BTP, in conjunction with the French National Police (under the Border Police unit) ? Police aux Fronti??res ? police the international services operated by Eurostar.
BTP is not responsible for policing the majority of the Tyne and Wear Metro (which is instead policed by Northumbria Police's Metro Unit) or the entirety of the Manchester Metrolink (policed by Greater Manchester Police). BTP also does not police heritage railways.
A BTP constable can act as a police constable outside their normal railway jurisdiction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XX3 - Staying safe from terrorism - More at https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/t/terrorism-in-the-uk/staying-safe-from-terrorism/
The threat of terrorism in the UK is real, but with a little knowledge you can increase your safety and help protect yourself against a terrorist attack. Find out below how to stay safe when you're out and about and how to report any suspicious behaviour that could be connected to terrorism.
What you can do
Communities defeat terrorism. We need the help and support of individuals, businesses and communities across the UK to remain alert and maintain the safety and security of those places where we live, work and socialise.
If you see or hear something unusual or suspicious, trust your instincts and ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) by reporting possible terrorist activity in confidence. Any piece of information could be important, so it's better to be safe and report anything you see. You can help the police prevent terrorism and save lives.
Crowded places, events, public transport, and iconic locations throughout the country are some examples of locations that could be potential targets for terrorists.
You're familiar with your workplace and surrounding area, so you're ideally placed to spot when something is amiss. In this period of heightened alert, it is vital to remain vigilant, trust your instincts and report possible terrorist activity to the police.
Look for anything that seems out of the ordinary, such as:
people in stationary vehicles watching a building or structure
vehicles moving slowly near public buildings, structures or bridges, or parked in suspicious circumstances
people using recording equipment, including camera phones, or seen making notes or sketches of security details
someone suspicious paying close attention to specific entry and exit points, stairwells, hallways or fire escapes
people loitering at or near premises for long periods and watching staff, visitors and deliveries for no reason

These cast-iron Police Call Posts were manufactured in the early 1930's by British Ericsson and sited throughout the City of London. The posts enabled the public to call the Police station and were also used for the station to contact the Policeman on the beat in that area. The red signal light would flash if the Constable were required to contact the station. The upper hatch opened to give access to the telephone
the middle door opened horizontally to provide a writing surface and lower door opened to a storage cupboard containing first aid kit and other useful items.
All the posts were decommissioned in the 1960's, when radio communication took over, and the majority of their contents were removed at that time.
A number of these posts were sold in the 1980's
The Liverpool Street Call Post had been particularly severely damaged by a vehicle collision. The fragments were painstakingly welded together and replacement cast-iron parts made only where absolutely necessary. All the posts were cleaned and repaired and their surfaces primed and filled where required to improve their surface quality.
Prior to restoration, the condition of the City's collection was in varying condition. Three of the posts, Aldgate, St Martin's le Grand and Walbrook, were in fairly good condition, however the remainder required full repair and replacement of missing parts.
The decision to remove cast-iron objects to the workshop for repair is one that requires careful judgement: as cast-iron is fragile, such objects should always be repaired in situ when possible to limit the risk of damage in transit. However, five of these posts could only be repaired off site, so having acquired consent, their temporary removal was carried out with great care.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R1WX6M - Merseyside Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing Merseyside in North West England. The service area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. As of September 2017 the service has 3,484 police officers, 1,619 police staff, 253 police community support officers, 155 designated officers and 208 special constables. The force is led by Chief Constable Serena Kennedy.
History
The service came into being in 1974 when Merseyside was created, and is a successor to the Liverpool and Bootle Constabulary (itself formed in 1967 by a merger of the Liverpool City Police with the Bootle Borough Police), along with parts of Cheshire Constabulary and Lancashire Constabulary. A proposal to merge the force with the Cheshire Constabulary to form a strategic police force was made by the Home Secretary on 6 February 2006 but later abandoned.
Merseyside maintained in 2018 it could lose 300 officers, reducing the force to 3,172. This would be a 31% reduction since 2010 when there were 4,616 officers

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNFB - This image shows an electronic roadside speed indicator sign on Bellhouse Lane in Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire. The sign displays the message Your Speed 37 followed by Slow Down, indicating that a passing vehicle is exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in this residential area.
Speed indicator devices of this type are widely used across the United Kingdom as part of traffic calming and road safety initiatives. Unlike enforcement cameras, they provide immediate visual feedback to drivers, highlighting excessive speed and encouraging behavioural change without issuing penalties. When drivers exceed the limit, warning messages such as Slow Down are triggered to reinforce compliance.
The photograph captures a car passing the sign with visible motion blur, emphasising the contrast between the digital warning and real-world driving behaviour. Installed on a tree-lined suburban road, the sign reflects local authority efforts to improve safety for residents, pedestrians, and other road users.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering road safety, speed management, transport policy, residential traffic issues, community safety schemes, and the use of technology to influence driver behaviour on UK roads.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JRBY - This image shows the interior door of a former prison cell at the House of Terror Museum on Andr?ssy ?t in Budapest, Hungary. The Hungarian words Beteg szoba, meaning sick room, are visible behind a glass panel in the heavy institutional door. In reality, such rooms were often used not for care but for the isolation, interrogation, or further punishment of prisoners held by the state security apparatus.
The House of Terror Museum occupies a building that was used first by the fascist Arrow Cross Party during the Second World War and later by the communist ?VH secret police. Thousands of people were detained, tortured, and imprisoned here as part of Hungary's experience of totalitarian rule in the 20th century. Cells and rooms like this form part of the museum's permanent exhibition, intended to confront visitors with the physical reality of political repression.
The worn paint, heavy metal fittings, and small inspection opening in the door emphasise the claustrophobic and dehumanising conditions faced by detainees. The image was taken indoors under artificial lighting, highlighting the texture and decay of the materials and reinforcing the atmosphere of confinement and institutional control.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to European history, human rights, political repression, totalitarian regimes, memorial museums, and the legacy of fascism and communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Some 1558 people lost their lives in crashes last year, up from 1460 in pre-pandemic 2019
New statistics released by the UK government have revealed that the number of road fatalities increased by 7% year on year in 2021, with 1558 people losing their lives in crashes.
The figure is up from 1460 deaths in 2020, when Covid-related restrictions heavily impacted levels of traffic on UK roads, but down 11% on pre-pandemic 2019, largely because numbers in 2021 were also kept down by lockdowns.
Some 128,209 casualties of varying severity occurred in 2021, which was down 16% on 2019, equating to 425 casualties per billion miles - also a drop from 2019.
The figures also revealed that pedal cyclist fatalities dropped by 21%, following an increase in 2020, associated with the pandemic. However, the number of cyclist casualties slightly increased by around 1%.
While the overall number of road deaths is down on pre-pandemic levels, the fatality rate per billion miles driven has increased, suggesting little progress is being made in making our roads safer, said Simon Williams, the RAC's spokesman on road safety.
We urge the government to publish its updated road-safety plan, which focuses on both improving car safety ? including mandating technology such as intelligent speed assist in new cars ? as well as measures to tackle poor driving standards and illegal behaviour behind the wheel.
A deeper dive into the figures showed that not wearing a seatbelt contributed to 30% of road deaths in 2021, a figure that increased to 47% at night.
The Department for Transport said that 34% of men killed in car accidents weren't wearing a seatbelt, compared with 20% of women.
The statistics also showed that people aged between 17 and 29 were the most likely to lose their life when not wearing a seatbelt, making up 40% of the overall figure.

On the day that news of Mahsa Amini's death spread throughout Iran, a young woman with a shaved head joined protesters who had gathered outside Kasra hospital, where Amini had lain in a coma since her violent arrest by Iran's morality police days earlier.
In her hand she carried a plastic bag full of her long hair, shorn off in a gesture of solidarity with Amini and in defiance of the increasing crackdown on women by the regime.
A week later, and protests sparked by Amini's death are raging in the province of Kurdistan and Tehran as well as cities such as Rasht, Isfahan and Qom, one of Iran's most religiously conservative cities.
The rage across Iran at the brutal pointlessness of Amini's death has lit the fires of protest and the increasing desperation of the authorities to extinguish it are, some believe, a sign of the growing strength and momentum of Iran's women's rights movement.
Women's issues have long been a catalyst for broader political action in Iran, said Annabelle Sreberny, professor emeritus at the Iranian Studies Centre at Soas University of London. This could be it. It could be the moment when people motivated by all the problems facing Iran today, like rising inflation, ecological crisis and lack of democratic participation, coalesce around these women's issues to challenge the regime.
During the past week women have been at the forefront of many of the demonstrations, shaving their heads and burning their headscarves in defiance of the strict hijab law and its brutal enforcement that led to 22-year-old Amini's arrest and allegedly her death.
The women's movement in Iran started in the first month of the Islamic Republic and has been simmering for at least the last 20 years, said Sreberny.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF8PC - Gerard Winstanley House which was formerly the towns magistrates court and police station but is now the home of a multi-arts thriving creative community.
It is a Grade II listed building dating back to around 1887 and of course, the first thing that hits you is the brickwork. The official records describe it as red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.
The buildings stand on Crawford Street opposite the small little garden that belongs to the Parish Church of All Saints and it really does cut a very imposing figure from a seat in that garden.
But the dramatic architecture doesn't stop there - not only do we have the amazing red brickwork and intricate dressings, but we have towers and turrets too! The spiked tower at the bottom end of Crawford Street rises high above the brickwork pointing right up to the often dark skies above.
This is where the main entrance to the courts was, its large welcoming doorway still a big feature of the facade. The symmetry and absolute craftsmanship of the building never fail to impress
These days the courts and police station have long gone, updated and replaced elsewhere in the town and everyone wondered what might happen to this magnificent building.
Would it go to rack and ruin like so many other buildings in the town, or would there be new life breathed into it, would it get a second chance?
The answer was firmly YES as the building was purchased and occupied by The Old Courts who have transformed the place and have refurbished the interior (still an ongoing project) to provide Art Galleries, a Theatre, a Live Music venue, a Cafe, a Record store, Band rehearsal rooms, Conference and Events space and even a bar.
Bailiff Bar is at the very bottom of the building around the corner from Crawford Street and on to King Street West.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBMT - North Yorkshire Police is the territorial police force covering the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire and the unitary authority of York in northern England. As of September 2018 the force had a strength of 1,357 police officers, 127 special constables, 192 PCSOs and 1,072 police staff. Of the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales, the force has the 5th largest geographic area of responsibility whilst being the 15th smallest force in terms of police officer numbers
The force was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, and was largely a successor to the York and North East Yorkshire Police, also taking part of the old West Riding Constabulary's area. The York and North East Yorkshire Police had covered the North Riding of Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and the county borough of York
it was itself formed in 1968 from a merger of the two riding forces with the York City Police
In July 2017, the force's headquarters was moved from Newby Wiske to Alverton Court in Northallerton. The new headquarters is the former offices of the Rural Payments Agency
Since November 2012, the force has been overseen by the elected North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Since 2018, this role has also included oversight of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In October 2021, the incumbent commissioner Philip Allott resigned following comments surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23XH - This image shows The Evron Centre in Filey, North Yorkshire, a historic civic building that accommodates Filey Police Station alongside other community and local authority services. Signage in the foreground references Scarborough Borough Council, reflecting the building's long-standing role in local government and public administration prior to local government reorganisation in North Yorkshire.
The stone-built structure features arched windows, contrasting stone dressings, and a corner turret, characteristic of late nineteenth-century municipal architecture. Such buildings were often designed to project authority, stability, and civic pride in growing seaside towns like Filey.
The presence of clearly marked police signage highlights the building's continuing role in public safety and community services. Surrounding greenery, benches, and footpaths suggest a civic setting integrated into everyday town life rather than a remote institutional site.
Photographed in daylight under overcast conditions, the image provides a clear documentary record of a multi-use civic building, illustrating how historic municipal architecture continues to support modern public services in smaller English coastal towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AYHJHA - The Marine Policing Unit (MPU), formerly known as Thames Division, is a Met Operations branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Its forerunner, the Marine Police Force, was England's first recognised preventive police unit.
The MPU is headquartered on Wapping High Street, in the east of the city, from where it operates a fleet of vessels responsible for policing the River Thames within Greater London.
Today the MPU is responsible for waterborne policing of the 47 miles of the Thames between Hampton Court in the west and Dartford Creek in the east. Above Hampton Court, Surrey Police have responsibility for policing but a launch is supplied by the Environment Agency. Below Dartford Creek, responsibility lies with both Essex Police and Kent Police, who have combined forces and formed a joint marine unit, with Kent based at Sheerness and Essex based at Burnham-on-Crouch.
Wapping police station (left) and pier
Based at a police station on Wapping High Street and with 22 vessels at its disposal, the MPU also provides support to the rest of the Metropolitan Police and to the City of London Police when dealing with incidents in or around any waterway in London. A specialist underwater and confined-spaces search team carries out searches throughout the Metropolitan Police District. The unit also has 24 officers who are trained in rope access techniques and trained to carry out searches and counter demonstrator operations at height.

In the show, although a TARDIS is normally capable of disguising itself to blend into its surroundings, the ship's chameleon circuit broke down in England in 1963, and left the TARDIS seen most often in the show stuck as a police box, except for a brief period in one adventure seen in 1985. The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New ?7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre ? which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane ? in 2000 and again in 2012.
While the first phase of demountable barriers was put up on Friday night, Waitrose car park and Dane Street flooded on Saturday ? with photos showing drains in the road struggling to cope.

Hayhurst Quay marina was evacuated, with a 65-year-old man rescued from the water overnight and another man taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia.

More at https://www.northwichguardian.co.uk/news/17997547.questions-need-answered-town-centre-flooding/ Waitrose car park, Dane Street, the subway and lower Witton Street are among the areas affected.
Hayhurst Quay marina was evacuated, with a 65-year-old man rescued from the water overnight and another man taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRB0 - Raymond Anthony Codling was an Inspector with Greater Manchester Police who was murdered at Birch Services on the M62 motorway near Heywood, Greater Manchester, in 1989.
In the early hours of 14 September 1989, Codling, aged 49, in company with Sergeant James Bowden, 45, arrived at Birch motorway services between junctions 18 and 19, westbound, on the M62, looking for a white van, the details for which had been circulated by radio. The officers saw a motorcyclist, whom they approached, and he provided them with his details, which later proved to be false. A short time later they saw the man again, acting suspiciously, and the two officers approached him.
Bowden noticed that the man had a large knife in his belt and was holding his right hand inside his jacket. Bowden attempted to seize the knife but the man pulled back and drew out a 9 mm pistol. The man fired almost immediately at Bowden, but he escaped injury as the bullet was fired across his body and was deflected by the thick leather cover of his notebook in a breast pocket. The man then shot Codling in the chest
as he laid on the ground injured, a second shot was fired at Codling, killing him. Bowden attempted to give chase but was hit by a gunshot in the leg and was forced to take cover
he later recovered from emergency surgery. The suspect escaped.
After a manhunt, the gunman, later identified as Anthony Hughes from Baguley, was traced to a garage in Kendray, South Yorkshire. When officers entered they found Hughes' body
he had killed himself with the same gun used in the attack on Codling and Bowden. No motive was ever established for the attack, except that Hughes had previously carried out a series of armed robberies, had served 15 years in prison for a string of violent offences, and had indicated his desire to kill a police officer following an earlier court appearance for a minor offence for which he was fined.
In 1991, a memorial to Codling was unveiled at the place of his death

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF831P - CSIs examine crime scenes to gather forensic evidence that will ultimately lead to the detection and prosecution of criminals.
CSIs are not police officers, they are support staff: civilians who are employed by police forces.
A Police CSI unit provides cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
CSIs are trained to identify, record and recover forensic evidence from all types of crime, ranging from criminal damage, burglary and vehicle crime (known as volume crime) to more serious crime types including arson and murder.
However, a CSI could be asked to attend almost any incident where the potential for forensic evidence has been identified. Unlike CSI Miami CSIs in Cheshire do not analyse evidence themselves or arrest criminals!
CSIs use a wide variety of techniques and equipment to recover forensic evidence. This may include recording the crime scene by taking photographs, powdering for offender's fingerprints, searching for footprints or marks left by tools, taking swabs of blood or collecting fibres, hair, paint or glass.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J49 - A police box is a public telephone kiosk or callbox for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. It was used in the United Kingdom throughout the 20th century from the early 1920s. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone was located behind a hinged door so it could be used from the outside, and the interior of the box was, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers to read and fill in reports, take meal breaks and even temporarily hold prisoners until the arrival of transport.
Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now members of the British police carry two-way radios and mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that they were requested to contact the station. Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency or, in the case of the Metropolitan Police, for assistance with any matter normally within the purview of the police.
Police boxes were usually blue, with the most notable exception being Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s. In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book, a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
The blue police box is often associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a 1960s British police box

----
Cannabis is a class B drug meaning it it is illegal to possess.
Anyone found with the drug could be imprisoned for up to five years while supplying it can be punished with a 14-year jail sentence or an unlimited fine.
The penalty depends on the amount of the drug, the person's criminal history and other aggravating or mitigating factors.
Police can also issue a warning or an on-the-spot fine of ?90 to someone found with cannabis.
Alternatively, officers could issue a cannabis warning which goes on a person's record but is not revealed by a standard criminal records check.
Of the 16,101 convictions for cannabis possession in the UK in 2016, 292 were jailed.
The legality of recreational use is not up for debate, the government has said.
What is medicinal cannabis?
Cannabis also contains cannabidiol (CBD) which scientists are investigating as a medical treatment.
CBD-based treatments have shown some promising results for reducing seizures in children with severe epilepsies.
Medical trials have largely focused on pharmacological preparations.

The TARDIS Time And Relative Dimension In Space is a fictional time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its various spin-offs.
The TV show Doctor Who mainly features a single TARDIS used by the central character the Doctor. However, in the series other TARDISes are sometimes seen or used. The Doctor's TARDIS has a number of features peculiar to it, notably due to its age and personality. While other TARDISes have the ability to change their appearance in order to blend in with their surroundings, the chameleon circuit in the Doctor's TARDIS is broken, and it always resembles a police box. However, in the new series, a perception filter is used to blend in with the surroundings so it is often ignored by passersby. While the exterior is of limited size, the TARDIS is much bigger on the inside, containing an apparently infinite number of rooms, corridors and storage spaces within.
Doctor Who has become so much a part of British popular culture that the shape of the police box has become associated with the TARDIS rather than with its real-world inspiration. The name TARDIS is a registered trademark of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The police box design has also been registered as a trademark by the BBC, despite the design having been created by the Metropolitan Police. The word TARDIS is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7YN94 - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.
Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, a group of talented young players brought through the club's academy by the eponymous manager Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy, as well as club scout Joe Armstrong, who discovered Charlton in 1953, and Best in 1961, amongst others. Law arrived at the club from Italian team Torino for a club record ?115,000 in 1962, having previously played for Huddersfield Town and rivals Manchester City.
Charlton made his debut on 6 October 1956, scoring twice in a 4?2 win against Charlton Athletic. Law made his debut on 18 August 1962, scoring in a 2?2 with West Bromwich Albion. Although Best made debut against West Bromwich Albion on 14 September 1963, it wouldn't be until the reverse fixture on 18 January 1964 when all three would feature in the same starting line-up
a 4?1 victory in which all three scored, with Law scoring two of them

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89P1K - Unique to Edinburgh, the distinctive and compact properties were designed by former city architect Ebenezer MacRae between 1931 and 1933.
Featuring the city crest and Saltire-patterned mouldings, they were designed to complement the classical architecture of the Capital.
MacRae created 85 in total, and they were made of cast iron ? rather than Glasgow's pre-cast concrete ones designed by Gilbert Mackenzie Trench ? at the Carron foundry near Falkirk.
Around half of the slope-roofed structures ? measuring just 1.98 metres by 1.37m with a ridge height of around 2.74m ? are listed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNT2 - The theft of copper cables has cost our railways ?43 million in three years ? but who does it, and how? Live reveals a shameless confession that will fascinate and appal you ? and is also helping an intelligence unit crack down on the crime
Commuters heading into London one Tuesday morning last autumn faced a more frustrating journey than usual.
A mere 30ft of cabling had been stolen overnight from beside the track outside London Bridge, yet the disruption was staggering ? over 1,650 trains were delayed, at a cost to Network Rail of ?640,000, and the quiet fury of thousands of paying passengers. It took all day to get the trains running properly again.
A few weeks later, another power failure caused a total of 370 hours of delays near Crewe. In both cases, and hundreds more like it, the reason for the power failure was thieves stealing metal cables.
It is the widely reported modern plague. In a world thirsty for metals, those contained in power cables are worth ever more on the scrap-metal market.
One of the thieves shows a mobile-phone picture of a haul they sold to gypsies for ?5,700
One of the thieves shows a mobile-phone picture of a haul they sold to gypsies for ?5,700
And in recessionary Britain, the number of people prepared to take the risks to steal it is increasing. It's why metal thefts have gone up 50 per cent in the past year alone
prices have doubled since 2009.
Now the problem costs our economy an estimated ?770 million a year.
Many of the cables are ripped up in the dead of night from the sides of railways. Mainly copper, some are on huge coils waiting to be fitted
most are in the ground, but redundant
others are live.
They are easy to target because they are generally far from homes and people, and there are thousands of miles of track to choose from, which makes them virtually impossible to protect.
The investigations are crucial, however, as we are all the metal thieves' victims.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6N4T - The Ha??ienda lost its entertainments licence in June 1997. The last night of the club was 28 June 1997, a club night called 'Freak' featuring DJs Elliot Eastwick and Dave Haslam (the final live performance was by Spiritualized on 15 June 1997). The club remained open for a short period as an art gallery before finally going bankrupt and closing for good. After the Ha??ienda officially closed, it was used as a venue for two free parties organised by the Manchester free party scene. One of the parties ended in a police siege of the building while the party continued inside. These parties resulted in considerable damage and painted graffiti to the Ben Kelly designed interior.
Following a number of years standing empty, The Whitworth Street West site was purchased from the receivers by Crosby Homes. They chose to demolish the nightclub, and reuse the site for the construction of domestic flats. The iconic name was kept for the new development, with the Ha??ienda name licensed from Peter Hook, who owns the name and trademark. The nightclub was demolished in 2002 - Crosby Homes had acquired the property some time before that and, on Saturday 25 November 2000, held a charity auction of the various fixtures and fittings from the nightclub. Clubgoers and enthusiasts from across the country attended to snap up memorabilia ranging from the DJ booth box and radiators to emergency exit lights. The DJ booth was bought by Bobby Langley, ex Ha??ienda DJ and Head of Merchandise for Sony Music London for an undisclosed fee.
Crosby Homes were widely criticised for using the Hacienda brand name - and featuring the strapline Now the party's over...you can come home in the promotional material. Another controversial feature of the branding campaign was the appropriation of many of the themes which ran through the original building. One of these was the iconic yellow and black hazard stripe motif which was a powerful symbol in the club's original design, featuring as it did on the club's

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXMC2 - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHTH - St Mary and All Saints Church is in the centre of the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches. Richards describes it as one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture remaining in Cheshire. The authors of the Buildings of England series express the opinion that it is one of the most satisfactory Perpendicular churches of Cheshire and its setting brings its qualities out to perfection
It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. Built in red sandstone,[2] its plan consists of a west tower, a six-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, and a chancel flanked by chapels to the north and south. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.

This image is taken from a large joiner I took on May 10th 1994 from Liberty Island in New York harbour. An hour before I had witnessed a solar eclipse. To one side was the statue of liberty and the other, the New York Manhatten Skyline, crowned by the Twin Towers of The World Trade Centre and the wall Street financial district. The day before I had visited the observation deck of the south tower.
A bombing had been attempted the previous year on the 26th February
The joiner has been on my wall, appropriately mounted on black card for many years.
Too many innocents died that day, a result of a twisted idealogy that resulted in 767 aircraft being used as weapons and decades of failure of the west in bringing peace and lasting compromise to many poorer nations or ones where there is a financial interest.
The framing of the response as a 'war on terror' or a 'crusade' has been less than helpful from Mr Bush and Blair. Both of which have moved on to profit from their memoirs and speaking tours. Blair in his 'Envoy of the Quartet on the Middle East' role in the first nine days of the 2008\u20132009 Israel-Gaza conflict, was allegedly spotted at the opening of the Armani store at Knightsbridge, London. Aides said he had been in phone contact with other world leaders since the fighting began. Yeah right.
A decade on, have we done everything to make this a safer, fairer world?
It's my hunch the faster we do, the easier it will be to tackle some of the roots what causes radicalism across the world, whatever your religious beliefs may be or whoever you believed your prophet to be (or maybe he/she has not arrived yet).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDDR68 - The main Bridewell was the central lock-up for the city of Liverpool. It opened in 1864 as part of a complex which included the police courts, the police headquarters, and the central fire station. It was designed by Liverpool corporations architect Mr Weightman. The complex was the first of a kind in the UK and believed was often taken on board by other forces across the country. Now a hotel and student accommodation. Note - that in Liverpool all police stations with cells were called 'bridewells'. The Main Bridewell 'was classified as a prison with its own Governor who was a Police Chief Inspector' (City of Liverpool Police).
'The Main Bridewell was in Cheapside in Liverpool and the building is still standing although it is in the process of being re-developed. It was first opened in 1867 having been built in the Victorian tradition of striking fear into anyone who had the misfortune to have to spend some time there under lock and key. It had approximately 60 cells with each having a heavy wood door and each cell measuring 7ft x 7ft in total accommodation size. The toilet was positioned at the end of the wooden bench where a prisoner would have to sleep and the floors were made of stone. The reception area of the main ( as it was referred to by Police Officers) had a huge heavy door that was attended to by a Constable/ jailer. Once inside the premises, a prisoner would be presented to the Bridewell Sergeant or Inspector and the circumstances of the arrest would be explained by the arresting officer. Prisoners then had to remove articles of value and items such as belts, laces, braces etc for safe keeping and to prevent the prisoners causing harm to themselves. They would then be searched and detained in a cell. Prisoners that were detained at other Bridewells throughout the greater Liverpool area who would be appearing at the Liverpool Magistrates Court the following morning would be transferred during the early hours of each day to the Main Bridewell

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F80G8P - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER19 - A penalty charge notice from Cardiff council, is an official notification that you have been found to have committed a minor offence, for which there is a standard penalty charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84J70 - The Garda S??och?na meaning the Guardian(s) of the Peace), more commonly referred to as the Garda?? (Guardians) or the Guards, is the national police service of Ireland. The service is headed by the Garda Commissioner who is appointed by the Irish Government. Its headquarters are in Dublin's Phoenix Park.
Since the formation of the Garda S??och?na in 1923, it has been a predominantly unarmed force, and more than three-quarters of the force do not routinely carry firearms. As of 31 December 2019, the police service had 14,708 sworn members (including 458 sworn Reserve members) and 2,944 civilian staff. Operationally, the Garda S??och?na is organised into four geographical regions: the East, North/West, South and Dublin Metropolitan regions.
The force is the main law enforcement agency in the state, acting at local and national levels. Its roles include crime detection and prevention, drug enforcement, road traffic enforcement and accident investigation, diplomatic and witness protection responsibilities. It also provides a community policing service.
The service was originally named the Civic Guard in English, but in 1923 it became the Garda S??och?na in both English and Irish. This title has been maintained in recent legislation. This is usually translated as the Guardians of the Peace. Garda S??och?na na h??ireann appears on its logo but is seldom used elsewhere. At that time, there was a vogue for naming the new institutions of the Irish Free State after counterparts in the French Third Republic
the term guardians of the peace (gardiens de la paix, literally 'peacekeepers') had been used since 1870 in French-speaking countries to designate civilian police forces as distinguished from the armed gendarmery, notably municipal police in France, communal guards in Belgium and cantonal police in Switzerland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542A5 - Cable theft costs millions of pounds each year. The total cost to the economy, taking into account the impact of freight delays to power stations, supermarkets etc and on passengers who miss appointments or have their day ruined, is even higher.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4M2N - Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. Banksy's work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack.
Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public installations are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on. Much of his work can be classified as temporary art. A small number of Banksy's works are officially, non-publicly, sold through an agency created by Banksy named Pest Control. Banksy's documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for the film. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDB6 - A police box is a British telephone kiosk or callbox located in a public place for the use of members of the police, or for members of the public to contact the police. Unlike an ordinary callbox, its telephone is located behind a hinged door so it can be used from the outside, and the interior of the box is, in effect, a miniature police station for use by police officers.
Police boxes predate the era of mobile telecommunications
now British police officers carry two-way radios and/or mobile phones rather than relying on fixed kiosks. Most boxes are now disused or have been withdrawn from service.
The typical police box contained a telephone linked directly to the local police station, allowing patrolling officers to keep in contact with the station, reporting anything unusual or requesting help if necessary. A light on top of the box would flash to alert an officer that he/she was requested to contact the station.[2]:2 Members of the public could also use the phone to contact a police station in an emergency.
British police boxes were usually blue, except in Glasgow, where they were red until the late 1960s.:13 In addition to a telephone, they contained equipment such as an incident book and a first aid kit.:14 Today the image of the blue police box is widely associated with the science fiction television programme Doctor Who, in which the protagonist's time machine, a TARDIS, is in the shape of a 1960s British police box. In the context of a TARDIS, the image of the blue police box is a trademark of the BBC.
