The vibrant flag contrasts with the pale stonework of the building and the clear blue sky, adding a contemporary visual element to the historic structure. The upward perspective emphasises the grandeur and decorative detail of the arcade's fa??ade, reinforcing its status as a prominent West End landmark.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating luxury retail in London, historic shopping arcades, West End architecture, tourism in London, heritage buildings in modern city settings, and the visual identity of prestigious retail destinations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP346 - A close-up detail of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering D M Moore & Sons Ltd, Coleraine, photographed in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The ironwork shows heavy surface rust and a distinctive grid pattern, highlighting both the durability and ageing of traditional cast iron street infrastructure.
D M Moore & Sons was a local engineering and manufacturing firm, and the stamped name reflects a period when municipal ironwork such as manhole covers, drainage grids, and utility plates were commonly produced by regional foundries rather than national suppliers. Such markings provide valuable evidence of local industrial history embedded within everyday urban environments.
Photographed in close-up, the image emphasises texture, colour, and typography, making it suitable for illustrating themes of industrial heritage, historic manufacturing, urban archaeology, and the material culture of towns in Northern Ireland. It documents how traces of Coleraine's industrial past remain visible in ordinary street surfaces, often overlooked in daily life. Visible Text :-

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R6AHTX - Queen Victoria by Thomas Thornycroft (1814-1885)
Dated 1869, unveiled in 1870
Bronze on a granite pedestal
St George's Plateau, Liverpool
This striking sculpture of the young Queen Victoria riding side-saddle was commissioned to match the one of Prince Albert already completed by Thornycroft and unveiled in 1866. The Queen's hat is generously plumed, and, appropriately for this position outside St George's Hall, she bears the St. George's riband as a sash across her breast. The fine detail of the statue is most easily seen from below in the embroidered crown and scrolling, as well as the fringe, of the ceremonial saddle-blanket. In a description from the Art Journal, the horse is seen as full of impatient action, which tells on the sway of the figure
an effect difficult to express well in sculpture (qtd. in Cavanagh 95). The Queen holds what looks like a small sceptre, but is actually the handle of a riding crop, the rest of which has been lost. The drape of her voluminous skirt can be seen in the right-hand profile.
According to Bob Speel, this was the piece that made [Thomas Thornycroft's] name. Compare it with his equestrian statuette of the Queen from 1853.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AH - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron street plate marking the location of a fire hydrant in London. The embossed text reads Ham Baker & Co Ltd MWB Fire Hydrant 5635 ND Makers Westminster SW, identifying both the manufacturer and the hydrant reference number used by water and fire authorities.
Such plates form part of London's long-established municipal infrastructure, providing essential information for emergency services by indicating the position of underground water mains and hydrants. The initials MWB refer to the Metropolitan Water Board, which managed London's water supply for much of the twentieth century, placing the plate firmly within the capital's historic public utilities system.
The textured metal surface, worn edges, and oxidised colouring reflect decades of exposure to traffic, weather, and footfall, giving the plate a distinctive patina. Foundry-made street furniture like this is a characteristic but often overlooked element of London's streetscape, combining functional engineering with durable industrial design.
Photographed tightly to emphasise lettering, texture, and material detail, the image works well as editorial illustration of urban infrastructure, historic utilities, emergency services support systems, and the layered history embedded in everyday London street surfaces. It is particularly suited to features on British industrial heritage, public works, and the hidden systems that support city life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23BK - A close-up view of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering Borough of Hornsey and the manufacturer's mark J Gibb & Co, London. The surface shows extensive weathering and rust, with traces of blue paint remaining within the diamond-patterned ironwork, highlighting the long service life of traditional municipal infrastructure.
The Borough of Hornsey existed as a local authority until its abolition in 1965, when it was merged into the London Borough of Haringey. Street furniture marked with its name represents a surviving fragment of pre-Greater London administrative history. J Gibb & Co was among the manufacturers supplying cast iron covers and grids to London boroughs during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when local authorities commonly specified their own branded infrastructure.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, colour, and typography, the image functions both as documentary evidence of historic local government and as an abstract study of industrial materials. It is suitable for illustrating themes of London's municipal past, industrial manufacturing, urban archaeology, and the physical traces of former borough identities embedded in everyday streetscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRR7 - A close-up view of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering A C Woodrow & Co, London. The metal surface shows signs of age and oxidation, with a blue-grey patina and rust tones around the edges, highlighting the durability and long service life of traditional British ironwork.
A C Woodrow & Co was a London-based manufacturer supplying cast iron street furniture and utility covers during a period when local and regional foundries produced much of the infrastructure embedded in British streets. The geometric stud pattern and embossed lettering reflect functional industrial design intended to provide strength, grip, and clear identification.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, colour, and typography, the image works both as documentary evidence of historic urban infrastructure and as an abstract study of industrial materials. It is suitable for illustrating themes of Victorian and early-20th-century manufacturing, urban archaeology, street design, and the material history of London.

The cenotaph was designated as a Grade II listed building on 28 June 1952. On 8 November 2013, the designation was raised to Grade I. The reasons given for the designation include its design context with its impressive location adjacent to St George's Hall. Also noted is the architectural interest of the cenotaph, with its horizontal lines forming a foil to the vertical columns of the hall. Referring to its sculptural interest, the citation states that the sculptural work is exceptional and is arguably Tyson Smith's finest and most powerful work. The design is considered to have contemporary significance in that rather than using allegory and heroic idealisation, it employs powerful and modern realist portrayals. The quality of its craftsmanship is praised, and it is also to have group value in its location near other listed buildings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M367GP - As would expect of properties in Edinburgh's Royal Mile, the Faculty's Lord Reid Building and Mackenzie Building are steeped in history.
The Lord Reid Building, behind 142 High Street, is within an enclosed court and accessed via a pend known as New Assembly Close. It houses the Faculty's Consultation Centre and is named after James Scott Cumberland Reid, Lord Advocate from 1941-45 and Dean of Faculty from 1945-48. He was also an MP.
Such was his ability, Lord Reid was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a judge in the House of Lords, straight from the Bar, without any intervening judicial experience. He went on to win acclaim as one of most outstanding judges of the 20th Century.
The building is Category A listed and dates from the early 19th Century, although there is an older section which had been the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms and the King's Arms Tavern. Designed by James Gillespie Graham, it was the head office of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, and survived the 1824 Great Fire of Edinburgh. In 1894, it was taken over by the Scottish National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children and was a children's shelter until 1973.
Next, the building was home to the Edinburgh Wax Museum, the only waxworks in Scotland, drawing 230,000 visitors a year at its peak. In the late 1980s, the Faculty bought 142 as it has become known to Advocates. The building was opened officially by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1994.
The Mackenzie Building (left), in Old Assembly Close at 172 High Street, has Category B status, and takes its name from Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, Dean of Faculty from 1682-90 and founder of the Advocates Library. He served as Lord Advocate during the rule of Charles II and earned a reputation as a persecutor of Covenanters, who called him Bluidy Mackenzie.
The original property in the close was destroyed in the fire, and the building was erected in 1840 as a George Heriot Foundation School. The architect was Alexander Black

In Edinburgh's Royal Mile, just off the High Street, striking south, is a lane known as Covenant Close. This was named from the fact that one of the copies of the National Covenant was teken here from Greyfriars Kirkyard to collect signatures from other residents in the city. The copy was on display in one of the houses in the lane, and signatures were gathered on it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MR0N - Francis Matcham (22 November 1854 ? 17 May 1920) was an English architect who specialised in the design of theatres and music halls. He worked extensively in London, predominantly under Moss Empires, for whom he designed the Hippodrome in 1900, Hackney Empire (1901), Coliseum (1903) and Palladium (1910). His last major commission before retirement was the Victoria Palace (1911) for the variety magnate Alfred Butt. During his 40-year career, Matcham was responsible for the design and construction of over 90 theatres and the redesign and refurbishment of a further 80 throughout the United Kingdom
Matcham was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, where he became apprenticed at the age of 14 to the architect George Soudon Bridgman. Matcham moved to London, aged 21, where he joined the architectural practice of J. T. Robinson, who was to become his father-in-law. Under Robinson, Matcham completed his first solo design, the Elephant and Castle Theatre, which opened in June 1879. He took over the business on Robinson's death and continued the designs of various provincial theatres. He formed his own practice, Matcham & Co., in the 1880s and enlisted skilled craftsmen. His first major association came in the 1880s when he was employed to design and refurbish theatres belonging to the Revill family who owned many of the theatres throughout the United Kingdom.
Matcham's most successful period was between 1892 and 1912 when he worked extensively for Moss Empires, a theatre building business headed by Edward Moss and run by Oswald Stoll. Under them, Matcham completed 21 theatres, including three in London, with the rest being in the provinces. Also during this period, although not with Moss Empires, he completed the designs for the Tower Ballroom at Blackpool Tower, Grand Theatre, Blackpool and the Theatre Royal, Norwich, all in 1894, and the County Arcade, Leeds, in 1900.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MR0W - Sir Oswald Stoll (20 January 1866 ? 9 January 1942) was an Australian-born British theatre manager and the co-founder of the Stoll Moss Group theatre company. He also owned Cricklewood Studios and film production company Stoll Pictures, which was one of the leading British studios of the Silent era. In 1912, he founded the Royal Variety Performance (originally Royal Command Performance) a now-annual charity show which benefits the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund
Born in Melbourne, Australia as Oswald Gray, he moved to England with his mother, Adelaide McConnell Gray after the death of his father James Oswald Gray. When his mother remarried, he took his stepfather's last name, Stoll.
At a young age, Stoll left school to help his mother, Adelaide, manage first the Parthenon music hall in Liverpool, and later a regional theatre company. The company was a success, and Stoll began to buy or build city theatres. The theatre business made Stoll a wealthy man, and in 1898 he merged his business with that of competitor Edward Moss, to form Moss Empires. By 1905, almost every large town in Great Britain had an Empire or a Coliseum theatre, managed by Stoll. He continued to honour the roots of his business by installing his mother in each new box office, so she could take the first ticket sale
His film company Stoll Picture Productions was founded in April 1918, and acquired a one-stage studio in Surbiton which the company retained until 1923. A former aeroplane factory in Cricklewood was purchased in 1920 and converted to film use as Cricklewood Studios. Particularly associated with director Maurice Elvey, Stoll's company maintained a connection with the film industry until 1938 when the Cricklewood studio was closed
Stoll worked with the theatre architect Frank Matcham on several theatres, including The Hackney Empire

The Health and Medicines Act 1988 allows the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to provide, and charge for, various services for the purpose of income generation for the NHS. The Department of Health's guidance on Income generation in the NHS (2006) provides that income generation activities? of which charging for car parking is one? must be profitable and cannot use NHS funding to subsidise their costs.
NHS England has issued non-mandatory guidance on NHS patient, visitor and staff car parking management (updated October 2015). This suggests concessions for the following groups:
-disabled people
-people who attend frequent outpatient appointments
-visitors with relatives who are gravely ill
-visitors to (and carers of) people who have an extended stay in hospital
-carers of people in the above groups
-staff working shifts when no public transport is available

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C5R3AA - Bawming the Thorn' in Appleton Thorn Village
Appleton Thorn village is the only village in England where the 'Bawming the Thorn' ceremony takes place. This ceremony take place on the 3rd Saturday of June every year. The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot of the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Adam de Dutton, a knight of the Crusades and local landowner, brought it to Appleton. Bawming, which means, decorating the the tree with flowers and ribbons, takes place whilst local children (our 6 class) dance and sing the Bawming song.
The Bawming Committee are always looking for new members to get involved to help maintain this unique celebration. If you would like to help in any way, please contact the Committee at: bawming@appletonthorn.org.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989TW - A Post-it Note (or sticky note) is a small piece of paper with a re-adherable strip of glue on its back, made for temporarily attaching notes to documents and other surfaces. A low-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive allows the notes to be easily attached, removed and even re-posted elsewhere without leaving residue. Originally small yellow squares, Post-it Notes and related products are available in various colors, shapes, sizes and adhesive strengths. As of 2019, there are at least 26 documented colors of Post-it Notes.
Although 3M's patent expired in 1997, Post-it and the original notes' distinctive yellow color remain registered company trademarks, with terms such as repositionable notes used for similar offerings manufactured by competitors. While use of the trademark 'Post-it' in a representative sense refers to any sticky note, no legal authority has ever held the trademark to be generic.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNH - It is a pretty obvious concept that service areas - which are built to serve motorists - should provide parking. Specifically, parking for all vehicles must be provided free for at least two hours, with more detail given below.
A significant portion of formal complaints regarding motorway service areas relate to parking. How can something so simple go so wrong? There appears to be a mismatch between what customers expect and what they are offered.
For specific queries and complaints you should contact the operator, who are likely to ask anybody complaining about a penalty charge to follow the appeals procedure sent to them.
All official motorway and A-road service areas - that is those with official road signs directing people to them - must provide at least two hours free parking for all road users who are entitled to use the facility. This free short stay must be provided regardless of whether the driver intends to leave the car or not. Older facilities may not be able to provide dedicated parking for each class of vehicle, instead relying on a generic 'long vehicles' area.
The two hour free period has been enshrined in government policy since 1979, on the basis that a motorway service area's primary function is to cater for the immediate needs of motorists and that two hours was considered sufficient. While motorway services can make handy places for car-sharing or meetings, this is not meant to be their priority. There is no rule that charges must apply after two hours, but convention is that all operators charge after two or three hours (four hours is common in Ireland). There is no rule preventing services from asking people to leave after two hours. Buying food or drinks does not absolve the customer of the need to pay for parking.
Note that the rule merely states that two hours free parking must be available, it doesn't state that all parking spaces must be free. There have been reports that some petrol stations are charging vehicles for parking.

Built in 1875 and following a reconstruction in 1972-1974, Warrington Housing Association purchased the building in 2002.
In January 2003, the resource centre planning applications for works to the whole building were submitted, and planning permission was granted in May. In February 2004, the GATEWAY was chosen as the new name. In April 2004 WREN awarded the GATEWAY funding towards work to make the building more accessible to disable clients. Works were completed in July 2004. In June 2006, the new conference suite opened. Funding for the construction of this new suite was provided by 'ChangeUp Cheshire & Warrington' and work was commissioned by Warrington Housing Association on behalf of the GATEWAY.
As a community facility, the GATEWAY is an independent charity providing a central focus for 25+ local voluntary and statutory organisations and services to come and work together to help people in the local community. It provides a focal point for the voluntary sector, providing access to advice, support, information and opportunities for lifelong learning.
We are committed to ensuring expert, consistent and sustainable services are provided and promoting partnerships working
networking and sharing of knowledge and skills. A community Caf??, meeting and training rooms, a conference centre and exhibition space are available for groups or individuals to use.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTDB - The Jewellery Quarter is an area of central Birmingham, UK. Situated in the north western area of the Birmingham City Centre, there is a population of around 19,000 people in a 1.07-square-kilometre (264-acre) area.
The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. The Chamberlain Clock is an Edwardian, cast-iron, clock tower in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, England. It was erected in 1903 to mark Joseph Chamberlain's tour of South Africa between 26 December 1902 and 25 February 1903, after the end of the Second Boer War. The clock was unveiled during Chamberlain's lifetime, in January 1904 by Mary Crowninshield Endicott, Joseph Chamberlain's third wife.
Standing at the junction of Vyse and Frederick Streets with Warstone Lane, it is now a local landmark and symbol of the Quarter. Chamberlain had been a resident on Frederick Street and had also helped jewellers through his campaign work to abolish Plate Duties ? a tax affecting jewellery tradesmen of the time. The timepiece was originally powered by a clockwork winding handle. It was later adapted to electricity but fell into disrepair and lost its chime.
It was fully restored in 1989.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTX7 - A crumpet is a small griddle cake made from an unsweetened batter of water or milk, flour and yeast, eaten in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, and some areas of the Commonwealth.
Crumpets are regionally known as pikelets, a name also applied to a thinner, more pancake-like griddle cake: a type of the latter is referred to as a crumpet in Scotland.
Crumpets have been variously described as originating in Wales or as part of the Anglo-Saxon diet,[3] based on proposed etymologies of the word. In either case breads were, historically, commonly cooked on a griddle whererever bread ovens were not available. The bara-planc, or griddle bread, baked on an iron plate over a fire, was part of the everyday diet in Wales until the 19th century.
Small, oval cakes baked in this manner were called picklets, a name used for the first recognisable crumpet-type recipe, published in 1769 by Elizabeth Raffald in The Experienced English Housekeeper. This name was derived from the Welsh bara pyglyd or pitchy [i.e. dark or sticky] bread, later shortened simply to pyglyd. The early 17th century lexicographer Randle Cotgrave referred to popelins, soft cakes of fine flour, &c., fashioned like our Welsh barrapycleds.
The word spread initially to the West Midlands of England, where it became anglicised as pikelet, and subsequently to Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and other areas of the north
crumpets are still referred to as pikelets in some areas. The word crumpet itself, of unclear origin, first appears in relatively modern times
it has been suggested as referring to a crumpled or curled-up cake, based on an isolated 14th century reference to a crompid cake, and the Old English word crompeht (crumpled) being used to gloss Latin folialis, possibly a type of thin bread

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWGE - A full breakfast is a substantial cooked breakfast meal that typically includes bacon, sausages and eggs, and a beverage such as coffee or tea. It comes in different regional variants and is referred to by different names depending on the area. While it is colloquially known as a fry up in most areas of Britain and Ireland, it is usually referred to as a full English breakfast in England (often shortened to full English), and therefore, as a full Irish, full Scottish, full Welsh, full Cornish, and the Ulster fry in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Northern Ireland, respectively. It is especially popular in Britain and Ireland to such an extent that many cafes and pubs offer the meal at any time of day as an all-day breakfast. It is also popular in other English-speaking countries, particularly countries that were a part of the British Empire. On its origin, Country Life magazine states, The idea of the English breakfast as a national dish goes right back to the 13th century and the country houses of the gentry. In the old Anglo-Saxon tradition of hospitality, households would provide hearty breakfasts for visiting friends, relatives and neighbours.
The full breakfast is among the most internationally recognised British dishes along with such staples as bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, cottage pie, fish and chips, roast beef, Sunday roast and the Christmas dinner. The fried breakfast became popular in Britain and Ireland during the Victorian era, and appears as one among many suggested breakfasts in home economist Isabella Beeton's Book of Household Management (1861). A full breakfast is often contrasted (e.g. on hotel menus) with the lighter alternative of a continental breakfast, consisting of tea or coffee, milk and fruit juices with bread, croissants, bagels, or pastries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWP4 - The globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus), also known as French artichoke and green artichoke in the USA, is a variety of a species of thistle cultivated as a food.
The edible portion of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom. The budding artichoke flower-head is a cluster of many budding small flowers (an inflorescence), together with many bracts, on an edible base. Once the buds bloom, the structure changes to a coarse, barely edible form. Another variety of the same species is the cardoon, a perennial plant native to the Mediterranean region. Both wild forms and cultivated varieties (cultivars) exist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3874 - The pawnbrokers' symbol is three spheres suspended from a bar. The three sphere symbol is attributed to the Medici family of Florence, Italy, owing to its symbolic meaning of Lombard.[12] This refers to the Italian province of Lombardy, where pawn shop banking originated under the name of Lombard banking. The three golden spheres were originally a symbol medieval Lombard merchants hung in front of their houses, and not the arms of the Medici family. It has been conjectured that the golden spheres were originally three flat yellow effigies of byzants, or gold coins, laid heraldically upon a sable field, but that they were converted into spheres to better attract attention.
Most European towns called the pawn shop the Lombard. The House of Lombard was a banking community in medieval London, England. According to legend, a Medici employed by Charlemagne slew a giant using three bags of rocks. The three-ball symbol became the family crest. Since the Medicis were so successful in the financial, banking, and moneylending industries, other families also adopted the symbol. Throughout the Middle Ages, coats of arms bore three balls, orbs, plates, discs, coins and more as symbols of monetary success. Pawnbrokers (and their detractors) joke that the three balls mean Two to one, you won't get your stuff back.
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of pawnbrokers. The symbol has also been attributed to the story of Nicholas giving a poor man's three daughters each a bag of gold so they could get

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE77H - Designed as a new headquarters for Ernst & Young, the ten-storey 1 More London Place provides the company with 35,000 square metres of high-quality, flexible office space on the south bank of the River Thames between London and Tower Bridges. A full-height atrium links the building's two ?fingers' of office space, creating a dramatic entrance space which is crisscrossed with three bridges per floor, with glass balustrades. The central concrete core and four peripheral steel cores are clad with extruded aluminium panels. The 24m-wide column-free floor plates benefit from generous amounts of daylight through the atrium and fully glazed facades, helping to minimise the building's energy usage.
Ernst & Young (trading as EY) is a multinational professional services firm headquartered in London. It was the third largest professional services firm in the world by aggregated revenue in 2012 and is one of the Big Four accounting firms.
The organization operates as a network of member firms which are separate legal entities in individual countries. It has 167,000 employees and more than 700 offices in more than 140 countries. It provides assurance (including financial audit), tax, consulting and advisory services to companies.
The firm's history dates back to 1849 with the founding of Harding & Pullein in England. The current firm was formed by a merger of American firms Ernst & Whinney (a successor firm of Harding & Pullein) and Arthur Young & Co. in 1989.[9] It was known as Ernst & Young until 2013, when it underwent a rebranding. The acronym EY was already an informal name for the firm prior to its official adoption

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H3FKJ9 - Robins Pie and Mash shop closes after more than 30 years serving Ilford.
Robins Pie and Mash, Chapel Road, Ilford, which is being run by the fifth generation of a family, closed on Saturday.
Owner June Robins said: There is still demand for pie and mash but unfortunately this is not the case in Ilford any more. Customers seem to want a different type of food.
It was a very sad day when we closed. We first opened the branch over 30 years ago but things have become a lot more expensive, especially as we get all our meat from Scotland.
The company, which has recently started supplying frozen meals to the Asda supermarket chain, also has a number of other branches including one in High Street, Wanstead.
Ms Robins added: When we informed our customers we would be shutting they just kept asking why.
I don't think pie and mash is dying out as we have a lot of demand in other areas including at weddings and football games, including West Ham United.
But times are changing and people seem to want universal food such as pizza and burgers. Pie and mash has a limited regional appeal.
Traditionally pie and mash dates back to the 19th century, when Dutch ships delivered live eels, which were used in pies, to Billingsgate Market.
Customer, Paul Scott, of Sandhurst Drive, Goodmayes, added: This is a great shame and customers aren't happy about it especially as there will now be no more pie and mash shops in Ilford.

There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.
The Day out with Thomas events made a return to the railway after a two-year absence, following fresh negotiations, having previously been unable to reach an agreement in 2009 with HIT Entertainment, the owners of the Thomas brand

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPF - Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway. It is located in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. It is currently owned by Bombardier Transportation.
The railway also built 200 cottages establishing a new community in what had been the rural township of Monks Coppenhall. Among the first workers to arrive were those from the old works at Edge Hill producing an increase in the town's population by some 800 men, women and children.
In 1845 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was merged with the Grand Junction. These, in turn, merged in 1846, with the London and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). All four had their own workshops but, in time, locomotive building was concentrated at Crewe.
In 1857 John Ramsbottom became Locomotive Superintendent. He had previously invented the first reliable safety valve and the scoop for picking up water from troughs between the tracks. He went on to improve the precision and interchangeability of tools and components.
In 1862 locomotive work was transferred from Wolverton. Wolverton became the carriage works, while wagon building was concentrated at Earlestown.
In 1853 Crewe had begun to make its own wrought iron and roll its own rails, and in 1864 installed a Bessemer converter for manufacturing steel. In 1868 it became the first place to use open-hearth furnaces on an industrial scale. It also built its own brickworks. Later the works was fitted with two electric arc furnaces.
Production increased steadily and, with the sale to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway of ten 2-4-0 and eighty six 0-6-0 locomotives, privately owned manufacturers took out an injunction in 1876 to restrain the railway from producing anything but its own needs. This remained in force until British Rail Engineering Limited was established in 1969.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4414882545 - 'Vulcan Foundry was a locomotive builder in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, on the edge of Warrington. Bridge girders was its original business when opened in 1832 as Charles Tayleur and Co. The opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway produced a ready flood of orders. In 1898, the it was renamed 'The Vulcan Foundry Limited'.
The works was important enough to have its own railway station. This was called Vulcan Halt, on the former Warrington and Newton Railway line from Earlestown to Warrington Bank Quay. The halt was opened in November 1916 by the London and North Western Railway. Dr Beeching closed it in 1965.
The first engines manufactured were similar to Stephenson's 'Planet' design for the North Union Railway. This was formed from the Wigan Branch Railway and the Wigan and Preston Junction Railway. Similar engines were made for the Warrington and Newton Railway. It might be likely that this brass plate came from one of those engines.
From 1835 onwards quite an export trade florished. Vulcan sold to to France, Russia and Austria. In 1852 the first locomotives ever to run in India were supplied to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. Export to India continued until after WWII, but decline was imminent. Vulcan had already diversified into Diesel and Electric units.
The factory became part of English Electric, then Lord Winestock's GEC where I secured my first paid employment and was aware of it (some people still calling it Ruston Diesels). The works closed in 2002 and although Vulcan Village survives, little evidence except the name of the industrial estate which keeps its name marks it out.
So the foundry went the same way as Bayer Garrett in Manchester. If you travel to the edges of what used to be the old imperial British Empire, you will still see some trains bearing plates like these. Many still functioning and lavished with love, care and attention.

Today I thought I would stop and contemplate for a short while, maybe be thankful for my own existence. Good therapy once every so often, to bring us down to earth.
We often forget behind our car of air-bags, crumple zones etc. that we are still mortal, hurtling along as if the road was a motorway (although it is six miles distant) in a little four wheeled tin can. On a motorbike its even more perilous, no crumple zones, only your leathers and crash helmet to protect you.
Kevin Pickstock was a keen biker and only 40 when he died. He was from Rudheath, barely a mile up the road from the bend at the Hartford road junction of the A556 bypass. A June summers evening that changed the lives of all his family, his two sons and many friends. It was not the first accident or fatality here.
There are still no safety measures on the road here, no 30mph zone, no calming, no Gatso camera.
I certainly make the effort to take it just a bit slower, when I pass these flowers now.

A church in a delightful setting of thatched cottages and the George and Dragon pub. If you visit on a sunday, check out the cakes and afternoon teas served by the church helpers (summer only).
Parisioners use the collection envelope to leave an abbonymous donation. These days they can gift aid it etc, this was not the case in the 1960's when a ten bob not would be a quite vast sum and six pence (from two three penny bits) maybe more the norm to be dropped into the plate.
The nickel brass threepence was used between 1937\u20131970. A strange coin sometimes called 'thripp'nce', 'thrupp'nce', 'threpp'nce' or 'thripp'ny bit', 'thrupp'ny bit' by grannies and others alike.
The english brown ten bob note note here was issued by issued by the Bank of England. It started to disappear when the multi-edged fifty pence piece was introduced, a great silver medalion of a thing, larger than the one today in circulation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252E - It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is based on a recipe that is several hundred years old that originates from the Swedish west coast, and in particular from Lysekil. The product is mainly made of salted cod roe (gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. In French, this type of caviar is sometimes referred to as caviar de Lysekil. Other manufacturers of similar caviar are ??hnbergs Kaviar (often regarded as the connoisseur's alternative, and currently also owned by Abba Seafood) and Boviks kaviar.
Kalles Kaviar has been a commercial success in Sweden ever since its market launch there in 1954. It is internationally recognized as a Swedish product, since many IKEA furniture stores worldwide feature this product in their food markets.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The tube design is well-recognized in Sweden and in Finland.
The product is also featured prominently in one of Ylvis's musical numbers from their Stories In Norway series on NorgeTV.
