On the day that news of Mahsa Amini's death spread throughout Iran, a young woman with a shaved head joined protesters who had gathered outside Kasra hospital, where Amini had lain in a coma since her violent arrest by Iran's morality police days earlier.
In her hand she carried a plastic bag full of her long hair, shorn off in a gesture of solidarity with Amini and in defiance of the increasing crackdown on women by the regime.
A week later, and protests sparked by Amini's death are raging in the province of Kurdistan and Tehran as well as cities such as Rasht, Isfahan and Qom, one of Iran's most religiously conservative cities.
The rage across Iran at the brutal pointlessness of Amini's death has lit the fires of protest and the increasing desperation of the authorities to extinguish it are, some believe, a sign of the growing strength and momentum of Iran's women's rights movement.
Women's issues have long been a catalyst for broader political action in Iran, said Annabelle Sreberny, professor emeritus at the Iranian Studies Centre at Soas University of London. This could be it. It could be the moment when people motivated by all the problems facing Iran today, like rising inflation, ecological crisis and lack of democratic participation, coalesce around these women's issues to challenge the regime.
During the past week women have been at the forefront of many of the demonstrations, shaving their heads and burning their headscarves in defiance of the strict hijab law and its brutal enforcement that led to 22-year-old Amini's arrest and allegedly her death.
The women's movement in Iran started in the first month of the Islamic Republic and has been simmering for at least the last 20 years, said Sreberny.

The growing abundance of fried food shops is underlined by the fact that there are now more than two for each secondary school in the borough.

Residents should be careful though when ordering their wings, many chicken shops have a poor food rating. ?Dixy Chicken' in Hackney Central, one of the 20 takeaways listed on the database, has a paltry one out of five star rating, indicating that the establishment is failing to comply fully with Britain's food hygiene laws.
A 25-year-old Hackney fried chicken shop worker of five years, spoke of the industry's bad practice.
After cooking a piece of battered chicken, you can only serve it within an hour, but staff leave it on a low heat all day, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, he said.
They do it to cut costs and get the most out of their stock.
It should be noted that the problem is not limited to chicken shops. There are around 160 fried food takeaways in the area, which equals eight per square kilometre. With this concentration, residents are never more than a 10 minute walk away from a deep-fried treat. A chicken and chips meal will set you back ?1, making it a clucking good deal.

Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

The Nellie Dean is a public house at 89 Dean Street, on the corner of Carlisle Street. There has been a pub on this corner since at least 1748, when it was called the Highlander. (Some say there was a pub here before that, called the Dolphin, but this author has yet to see reliable evidence to support that claim.)
The pub was rebuilt in its present form in 1900, retaining the Highlander name. In the 1950s and 60s it was a favoured haunt of the bohemian crowd who also patronised the French House, as well as those working in the movie industry that used to be focused on Wardour Street.
In 1967 the pub became the Nellie Dean, a name inspired by the street on which it stands and honouring Gertrude Astbury, an early 20th-century music hall singer whose signature song was ?Nellie Dean', later the title of a musical in which she starred.

Astbury came from Longport, now part of Stoke-on-Trent, and was nicknamed the Staffordshire Cinderella. She took the stage name Gertie Gitana on account of her supposed Gypsy origins and ?Gitana' was adopted to mean ?banana' in cockney rhyming slang. When Gertie's fame faded, the 60s pop singer Wayne Fontana briefly took her place in the cockney fruiterer's lexicon.

Gibbeting was a common law punishment, which a judge could impose in addition to execution. This practice was regularized in England by the Murder Act 1751, which empowered judges to impose this for murder. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

It is one of the original stations of the Metropolitan Railway (MR), the world's first underground railway, opened on 10 January 1863.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 1 and is served by five lines. On the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines it is between Great Portland Street and Edgware Road. On the Metropolitan line it is between Great Portland Street and Finchley Road. Baker Street station is the combination of three separate stations, with several booking offices throughout its operational years. Major changes took place in 1891-93 and 1910?12. The first part is the Circle Line station, which has its two platforms now used by the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. They are situated on a roughly east-to-west alignment beneath Marylebone Road, spanning approximately the stretch between Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place. This was part of the original Metropolitan Railway from Bishop's Road (now Paddington (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) station to Farringdon Street (now Farringdon) which opened on 10 January 1863.
The platforms serving the main branch of the Metropolitan line towards Harrow, Uxbridge and beyond are located within the triangle formed by Marylebone Road, Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place, following the alignment of Allsop place. This station is the second section which opened on 13 April 1868 by the Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway. This was later absorbed by the Metropolitan Railway, which is usually known to them as Baker Street East station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2B1YFTK - The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases is a small, specialist NHS hospital on the Royal United Hospital site in the northwestern outskirts of Bath, England.
The hospital was founded in 1738 as a general hospital for the poor in the city centre, where the frontage of its building still reads Royal Mineral Water Hospital. Thus it is known locally as The Mineral Hospital or The Min. The hospital moved to a new building at the RUH site in 2019.
From the 16th century the needs of the deserving poor who came to take the healing waters of the Roman Baths were recognised and an act of 1597 gave them the right to free use of the waters. This attracted beggars and, although the act was repealed in 1714, large numbers of people were still attracted to the city and St John's Hospital was only accessible to local residents. Plans were suggested for a hospital to receive them in 1716 with supporters which included Lady Elizabeth Hastings, Henry Hoare, Joseph Jekyll, William Oliver and Beau Nash.
The hospital was founded in 1738 as The Mineral Water Hospital. It provided care for the impoverished sick who were attracted to Bath because of the supposed healing properties of the mineral water from the spa. The original building, which was designed by John Wood the Elder, was built with Bath stone donated by Ralph Allen and completed in 1742. It was later enlarged, firstly in 1793 by the addition of an attic storey and later in 1860 by a second building erected on the west side of the earlier edifice. There is a fine pediment, in Bath stone, on the 1860 building depicting the parable of the Good Samaritan. The building was classified as Grade II* listed in 1972.
In 1993, the hospital became an NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in rheumatic disease and rehabilitation, which received a three-star rating in 2005. The hospital had a large brain injury rehabilitation service with separate units for adults, adolescents and children

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNY - Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first Moto-operated franchised bakery at Lymm truckstop in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at Birch eastbound the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one. Moto have also been opening franchises at some Extra services.
What makes Greggs a little bit different to other new brands is that most units have been modified so customers can visit without entering the main amenity building. This helped Moto's tax accounts: by not offering the option of eat-in food, the food was exempt from VAT, although the notorious pasty tax complicated things. As with most service station franchises, prices are inflated and the menu is altered slightly.
Greggs had never agreed to franchised stores before the Moto deal, but following its success they opened franchises with Euro Garages and Applegreen too (in the UK only). Greggs was now being added to petrol stations across the country, and Euro Garages started introducing the country's first Greggs drive thrus.
On the baked goods front, Moto had been using Upper Crust as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to Moto's other stores. In 2011 they also introduced West Cornwall Pasty Co., mostly in stands outside the services. Other operators have responded to Greggs with the likes of The Cornish Bakery, Pret a Manger and The Pasty Shop.
In line with Greggs's rules, service stations in the West Country are not allowed to sell Cornish pasties, for fear of upsetting the locals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PBRY2P - Grappenhall Cricket Club played its first game in 1881 on a ground in Bellhouse Lane. The club moved to its current home of Broad Lane in 1892 with a new clubhouse. There have been several new clubhouses built on the existing site with the most recent developments coming in the late 1980's with significant improvements to the facilities in 2011.
In the early days the club played a number of friendly matches. Grappers then played regular fixtures up to the 2nd World War. In 1939, before war broke out, Grappers were founder members of the North Cheshire League but the league was stopped at the start of the war and was never resumed.
From the 1960's onwards GCC were members of the Manchester Association which was the prelude to the clubs most successful period.
The 70's & 80's ? the golden years
In 1981, after a couple of good seasons following promotion to the top division in the late 70's, the 1st XI won the top flight for the first time. One of Grappenhall's best teams, it included some famous Grappers names such as Duncan Martindale, Rick Houghton, Chris Ashton, Neil Titchard, Jim Green, Nick Sharp and a young Neil Fairbrother, only a few years before he headed off for big things with Lancashire and England.
In 1982, the 1st XI went one better, this time winning the league and cup double with the HC Cup Final being one of a number of appearances the club mate at Old Trafford in the 80's.
The double was repeated in 1987 with another appearance at Old Trafford, this time with the team including another future Lancashire star and future Grappers captain in Steve Titchard. In the same season, the 2nd XI also tasted success by winning the Worthington Cup.
There were a number of other cup successes for the club during this period for the different senior and junior teams, with many a memorable game taking place and the tales still being regaled today.
In 1992, the club were in their last season in Manchester Association before a move to the CCCL

Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, a group of talented young players brought through the club's academy by the eponymous manager Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy, as well as club scout Joe Armstrong, who discovered Charlton in 1953, and Best in 1961, amongst others. Law arrived at the club from Italian team Torino for a club record ?115,000 in 1962, having previously played for Huddersfield Town and rivals Manchester City.

It is situated on the west side of the city centre at Centenary Square, beside the Birmingham Rep (to which it connects, and with which it shares some facilities) and Baskerville House. After an international design competition, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects, a shortlist of seven architects was announced on 27 March 2008. They were chosen from a list of over 100 architects. The architects chosen were: Foreign Office Architects, Foster and Partners, Hopkins Architects, Mecanoo, OMA, Schmidt hammer lassen and Wilkinson Eyre.
In early August 2008, Mecanoo and multi-discipline engineers, Buro Happold, were announced as the winner of the design competition. More detailed plans for the library were revealed by the council in conjunction with the architects at a launch event held on 2 April 2009.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXH8Y - Today there are 28 public libraries in the Scottish capital[2] but, as the first, the creation of Central Library was funded with ?50,000 from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. At the opening ceremony a telegram from Carnegie was read out stating: We trust that this Library is to grow in usefullness year after year, and prove one of the most potent agencies for the good of the people for all time to come.
The site selected for the library was the former home of Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet Hope of Craighall, advocate for King Charles I. The structure, built in 1616, was demolished in March of 1887 to make way for the library. The lintel from Hope's home, bearing the carved inscription TECUM HABITA 1616 from the fourth satire of Persius, is preserved above an inner doorway of the library.
Carnegie's funding was initially an offer of ?25,000 in 1886 which was doubled, overcoming prior opposition to the establishment of a public library, the city?last of those to do so in Scotland?adopted the Public Libraries Act and on 9 July 1887, Carnegie laid the foundation stone of architect George Washington Browne's French Renaissance-styled building.

It was formed by dumping around 1,501,000 cartloads of earth excavated from the foundations of the New Town into the drained Nor Loch which forms today's Princes Street Gardens.
The construction of the Earthen Mound, as it was originally called, was begun in 1781 and it was extended over the years until by 1830 it was macadamised and landscaped so that it appeared more or less complete. When the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was extended to Waverley in 1846, tunnels were driven under The Mound to allow access to the west. The Bank of Scotland headquarters on the Mound
Some of Edinburgh's most notable buildings and institutions have their premises on The Mound, including the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, the spires of New College, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the elegant domed Headquarters of the Bank of Scotland, and its museum, Museum on the Mound.
Today The Mound is a busy, if fairly steep, thoroughfare taking traffic to and from Princes Street and the Royal Mile in the Old Town. Due to its raised elevation, the Mound commands expansive views over Princes Street and the New Town of Edinburgh and towards Calton Hill.

The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a ?47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG37YT - The current North Bridge is 525 feet (160 m) long and has three spans of arched girders each 175 feet (53 m) feet in length. It is 75 feet (23 m) wide. It was constructed from 1894?1897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. A medal[3] was struck commemorating the opening of the bridge on 15 September 1897.[4] The medal shows a view of the bridge with trains underneath and on the obverse a bust of the by then knighted Sir Andrew McDonald, Lord Provost.[5]

Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.[6]

The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.
Great Budworth is a village that was formerly in the estate of Arley Hall. In the later part of the 19th century, its owner, Rowland Egerton-Warburton, undertook a campaign to restore the village and render it picturesque in Victorian eyes.
The George and Dragon was at that time a simple three-bay Georgian inn. In 1875 Egerton-Warburton commissioned the Chester architect John Douglas to undertake the restoration. Douglas added tall rubbed chimneys, mullioned windows and a steep pyramidal turret
On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AT6 - Chelsea Bridge is a bridge over the River Thames in west London, connecting Chelsea on the north bank to Battersea on the south bank. There have been two Chelsea Bridges, on the site of what was an ancient ford.
The first Chelsea Bridge was proposed in the 1840s as part of a major development of marshlands on the south bank of the Thames into the new Battersea Park. It was a suspension bridge intended to provide convenient access from the densely populated north bank to the new park. Although built and operated by the government, tolls were charged initially in an effort to recoup the cost of the bridge. Work on the nearby Chelsea Embankment delayed construction and so the bridge, initially called Victoria Bridge, did not open until 1858. Although well-received architecturally, as a toll bridge it was unpopular with the public, and Parliament felt obliged to make it toll-free on Sundays. The bridge was less of a commercial success than had been anticipated, partly because of competition from the newly built Albert Bridge nearby. It was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1877, and the tolls were abolished in 1879.
The bridge was narrow and structurally unsound, leading the authorities to rename it Chelsea Bridge to avoid the Royal Family's association with a potential collapse. In 1926 it was proposed that the old bridge be rebuilt or replaced, due to the increased volume of users from population growth, and the introduction of the automobile. It was demolished during 1934?1937, and replaced by the current structure, which opened in 1937.
The new bridge was the first self-anchored suspension bridge in Britain, and was built entirely with materials sourced from within the British Empire. During the early 1950s it became popular with motorcyclists, who staged regular races across the bridge. Jud Charlton pictured here is a London actor, comedian and ventiliquist, with his alta-ego Philis. A sort of Camden Chucky on sulphate.
Jud has featured in films like Chemical Wedding and has played Ian Dury in 'ABFCAP - The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury' , playing one of my teen favourites. I still have a gold vinyl 'New Boots and Panties' up in the loft. Jud Charlton, walked out over alterations made to the script by the comedian Chris Langham after a dissagreement.

No, not a typical Saturday night on any British high st, but ladies from the Threesome Theatre looking sexy to attract punters like flies to their flyers advertising 'Berlin Cabaret'. It was on 20-25th August 2012 at The Space On The Mile V39 (venue 39, you are due a Deuchars now arent you??).
As the blurb says 'as our emcee takes you on a journey of decadence and ignorance, let the cabaret girls and boys entertain you in our own slice of 1930's Berlin. Threesome theatre spotlights Berlins cabaret from the day the curtain went up in 1901 to the Nazi regime tore it down. Featuring throbbing music, enticing dancing and naughty original songs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HF1 - The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its occupants, the Palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London, England.
Its name, which is derived from the neighbouring Westminster Abbey, may refer to either of two structures: the Old Palace, a medieval building complex destroyed by fire in 1834, and its replacement, the New Palace that stands today. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5666139680 - 'The Playfair steps pay homage to architect William Henry Playfair FRSE (15 July 1790 \u2013 19 March 1857). Leading from the top of Market Street down to the square at the Mound, The Art Galleries, Princes Street and Princes Street Gardens.
Although they are as old as Auld Reekie herself, the current name dates from only just over 30 years ago.
They were renamed Playfair Steps by then Rt Hon Lord Provest, Kenneth W Borthwick on 21st April 1978. He held that post from 1977.
They were originally, The Mound Steps 1853/1972, then John Knox Way 1972/78 before Playfair steps 78 onwards. Thanks to Nicola for helping me with the history.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Scottish architects of the 19th century, designer of many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks in the New Town.
Two of his finest works are the neo-classical buildings of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy which are situated in the centre of Edinburgh, to the left of these steps. The Playfair Project completed in 2004 joined the two historic buildings with an underground link.
He was greatly inspired by a trip to Athens.
Playfair died in Edinburgh on 19 March 1857, and is buried in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery, where he designed a number of monuments for others, including Lord Jeffrey.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.
Hopefully this will be a distraction for everyone hooked today on the Kate (Catherine) Middleton and Prince William royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. In different times it might have taken place in Edinburgh and there may have been several monarchs, kings &

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

Today I thought I would stop and contemplate for a short while, maybe be thankful for my own existence. Good therapy once every so often, to bring us down to earth.
We often forget behind our car of air-bags, crumple zones etc. that we are still mortal, hurtling along as if the road was a motorway (although it is six miles distant) in a little four wheeled tin can. On a motorbike its even more perilous, no crumple zones, only your leathers and crash helmet to protect you.
Kevin Pickstock was a keen biker and only 40 when he died. He was from Rudheath, barely a mile up the road from the bend at the Hartford road junction of the A556 bypass. A June summers evening that changed the lives of all his family, his two sons and many friends. It was not the first accident or fatality here.
There are still no safety measures on the road here, no 30mph zone, no calming, no Gatso camera.
I certainly make the effort to take it just a bit slower, when I pass these flowers now.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJHT - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a ?47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, a group of talented young players brought through the club's academy by the eponymous manager Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy, as well as club scout Joe Armstrong, who discovered Charlton in 1953, and Best in 1961, amongst others. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466J - The King's became famous for being a venue belonging to the theatre empire Howard & Wyndham. The theatre was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Building Company Ltd, chaired by Robert C. Buchanan. The King's was built as a rival to the successful Royal Lyceum Theatre, which had been established for over twenty years. Buchanan was experienced in the industry as he already managed a large number of provincial variety theatres, however this was his most ambitious project yet.
The foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, with copies of the current newspaper and coins buried underneath. During construction the owners experienced financial troubles being unable to pay the final costs to the contractor William Stewart Cruikshank and to the architects, surveyors and lawyers, at which stage the operating rights were transferred to a new King's Theatre Company, of which Cruikshank was a major shareholder. Buchanan was managing director and he took on the day-to-day running of the King's, with Cruikshank`s son A. Stewart Cruikshank as manager. An attempt to sell the theatre to Howard & Wyndham Ltd chaired by Michael Simons, and therefore clear the debts, failed and the Cruikshank family decided to run it themselves with A Stewart Cruikshank becoming managing director in June 1908
The theatre is home to Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now run by the Capital Theatres which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an important venue over the Festival period. Plans are now underway for a new refurbishment scheme to bring the theatre up to modern day standards
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed separately. James Davidson designed the building itself. The interior of the King's was designed by JD Swanston

Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.
