Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E93490 - A brightly coloured Soul Man ice stock-photo/gotonysmith-Cream.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>cream van is parked at Crosby Beach, north of Liverpool, bringing music, seaside treats and mobile refreshments to the Merseyside coast. The pink, blue and white van advertises freshly made ice cream, lollies, cones and Flannels, with visible social media icons and playful beachside branding. The sandy beach, sea wall, open water and pale coastal light place the scene firmly on Crosby seafront, a popular day-trip destination in the borough of Sefton. Crosby Beach is best known internationally for Antony Gormley's Another Place, the installation of 100 cast-iron figures spread along three kilometres of foreshore, but the everyday visitor experience also includes walking, photography, families, dog walkers, cyclists, promenade users and seasonal food traders. This image is useful for editorial coverage of British seaside culture, ice cream vans, mobile catering, small independent businesses, coastal tourism, family days out, Liverpool day trips, beach refreshments and the continuing appeal of simple seaside treats. The Soul Ice Cream Van has a local social media presence connected with Crosby Beach, while Liverpool visitor coverage describes it as a well-known beach ice cream van associated with classic 99s and lollies. The photograph also works for stories about the economics of seasonal trading, outdoor leisure, post-industrial coastlines, Merseyside tourism, independent food vendors and the way colourful vans become part of the character of a promenade. The dramatic sky, pale sand and parked van create a slightly nostalgic British coastal mood, with the vehicle's modern social media signs contrasting with the old-fashioned pleasure of buying ice cream by the sea. It is a strong documentary stock image for travel guides, local news, lifestyle features, food retail, tourism marketing, family holiday articles, small business profiles and coverage of Crosby Beach as both an art destination and an ordinary working seaside space.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTR2 - Editorial live music photograph of Bella Podpadec of Dream Wife performing with bass guitar at Future Yard, Birkenhead, on 2 November 2024 during the band's Social Lubrication tour. Podpadec is shown kneeling on the stage in a dramatic performance pose, holding the bass upright under vivid pink and magenta concert lighting, with drum kit, microphone, LED panels, stage cables and black backdrop visible around the compact live venue setting. The image captures the physical energy and theatricality of a small venue rock show, where the closeness of the stage, lighting wash and visible equipment give the scene an immediate documentary feel.
Dream Wife are a London-based English-Icelandic rock band associated with punk, pop punk, indie rock, feminist punk energy and sharp live performance. Current band references list Rakel Mjöll on vocals, Alice Go on guitar and vocals, Bella Podpadec on bass and vocals, with Alex Paveley on drums, while Lucky Number Music identifies Podpadec as bassist and notes their they/them pronouns. The Future Yard date is listed as a 2 November 2024 Dream Wife show, with the set beginning with Social Lubrication , connecting this image strongly to the Social Lubrication album tour period.
The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of Dream Wife, Bella Podpadec, UK tour dates, Merseyside live music, Birkenhead venues, independent music spaces, feminist punk, queer music, contemporary alternative rock, concert reviews, music journalism and gig culture. It also works well for broader themes around women and non-binary musicians in rock, grassroots venues, Liverpool City Region culture, touring bands, stagecraft, bass performance and the continuing audience for energetic, politically aware guitar music. Future Yard's role as a multi-use live music space and artist hub in Birkenhead adds further regional and cultural relevance for local music features

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFG - Yates is an English pub chain. It was founded as Yates's Wine Lodge in Oldham, Lancashire by Peter and Simon Yates in 1884
Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 18541944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for £4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for £1 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RY72P1 - Taken on 29 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Manchester Stretford End football ticket, MUFC v Everton Wed 13/08/1969 7:30pm score was 0-2 - stubs, memorabilia. The location is Sir Matt Busby Way, Old Trafford, Stretford, Manchester M16 0RA. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains aged paper, printed match details and period typography, making the football memorabilia visually authentic. The 1969 match ticket detail provides period football culture, old admission prices, printed ephemera and Manchester club history in a way that suits nostalgia, sport, collecting and social-history features. The photograph can illustrate public transport, bus franchising, route branding, passenger services, regional mobility, coach operations and the practical detail of local travel. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include heritage, history, old, Manchester, United, MUFC, ticket, Everton, football, soccer, historic, tickets, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. The photograph should appeal to buyers looking for a grounded visual that says more than a studio icon, because it ties the subject to a real street, building, object or public setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD739D - How to Spot When Your Bra Doesn't Fit
Rather than trying to fit a bra yourself (leave that to the bra fitting experts!) I would advise that being able to identify when your bra doesn't fit is the first important step. Breasts can change size because of so many factors pregnancy, weight change, diet, change in medication, change in exercise routine even if the scales aren't changing, what you're eating can sometimes make breasts change size/shape, so getting properly fitted regularly is vital.
Knowing when it's time to get a newly-fitted bra is the first crucial step to becoming empowered and finding a new (more comfortable) you. When you're measured for a bra you won't need a tape measure using a tape measure to measure boobs is like using one to measure a jug of water. Boobs are 3 dimensional and a tape measure is 2 dimensional it just doesn't work!
A good bra fitting specialist (just like a good tailor) will be able to fit you by eye. All bras fit differently and a good bra fitter should be able to fit each bra to each person. Here at Mish we look at:
The Band
A good-fitting brand should be parallel all the way around and be in line with clips at the back. 80% of the work is done by the band so it needs to be right!
Underwire
Not all bras are underwired but those that are need to have the wire sitting outside the breast tissue in the centre against the rib cage nice and flush against the skin. Sometimes it won't because of the shape of breast or sternum- each person is different.
Cups
Crucially, the breast tissue should be sitting inside the cup and not be cutting it in half to create that four boob' effect!
Shoulder Straps
The tension of the shoulder straps is crucial. It should have enough give' and be able to pull up an inch, but not around your ears! Ideally if you drop your shoulder and try to wriggle the bra strap off it shouldn't come off. If it is then it's too loose (or it could be that the band is too big).

On 11 March 2013, Tyler was the first Tunisian woman to post a photograph of herself nude from the waist up on Facebook, with the phrase My body is mine and not the source of anybody's honour in Arabic. The photo was seen as scandalous and evoked strong controversies within Tunisian society comparable to the nude self-portraits of the Egyptian Aliaa Magda Elmahdy two years earlier. On 16 March, the popular talk host Naoufel Ouertani invited her to his show on Ettounsiya where she appeared disguised by pixellation. She explained that it was not for sexual reasons that she appeared topless but to call out their demands for the women's liberation in a patriarchal society.
Imam Adel Almi issued a fatwa for her to be punished with 100 lashes and stoned to death.
Imprisonment
On 19 May 2013 she painted the name FEMEN on a cemetery wall in Kairouan, to protest against the annual congress of Salafi party Ansar al-Sharia. She was arrested and brought to Messaadine jail in Sousse. She faced up to 1 year in prison
Tyler's father, the medical doctor Mounir Sbouï, told the French newspaper Libération in an interview that his daughter made a mistake but didn't commit a crime. The long time militant and campaigner of the socialist Democratic Forum for Labour and Liberties, who had left the party only after it joined the Troika government, said he was even proud of his daughter who defended her ideas and who also brought him to reconcile with his own values making him understand that one needs to be active.
Maryam Namazie interviews Amina and Aliaa Elmahdy (8 March 2014).
International protests followed for her release from detention. On 29 May 2013, three FEMEN members held topless protest in front of the Tunis court to demand her release while shouting Free Amina! and A women's spring is coming!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK2B0A - Spam is a brand of salty processed canned pork made by Hormel Foods Corporation. It was introduced by Hormel in 1937 and gained popularity worldwide after its use during World War II. By 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries (and trademarked in over 100) on six continents. In the U.S., Hawaii is the state with the highest per capita consumption of Spam, which has become an ingredient in Hawaiian cuisine (like sushi).
The generic form of Spam may be sold in cans as pork luncheon meat. Since its invention, it is now available in different flavours and using different meats. Like most hotdogs, Spam is precooked, making it safe and edible to eat straight from the can, but it is often cooked further to improve some characteristics of its palatability.
Spam's basic ingredients are primarily pork shoulder and ham, with salt, water, modified potato starch (as a binder), sugar, and sodium nitrite (as a preservative). Natural gelatin is formed during cooking in its tins on the production line. Concerns about Spam's nutritional attributes have been raised, in large part due to its high content of fat, sodium, and preservatives.
Spam has affected popular culture, including a Monty Python skit, which repeated the name many times, leading to its name being borrowed to describe unsolicited electronic messages, especially email. It is occasionally celebrated in festivals such as Austin's Spamarama.

The location is Mombacher Strasse. 61, 55122 Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. Mainz Fastnacht is one of Germany's major carnival traditions, combining political humour, costumes, parades, pub events and local identity in the Rhineland-Palatinate capital. The Mainz election posters document everyday democratic campaigning, party branding, street advertising and local politics during the 2023 mayoral contest. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD2N6 - Bold Hard Work Pays Off artwork in Stevenson Square in Manchester's Northern Quarter, stock-photo/gotonysmith-England.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>England. The installation is credited on the upper panel as Fred Aldous x Tara Collette and uses a vivid yellow ground with large hand-painted pink lettering, turning a simple motivational phrase into bright public-facing street art. Fred Aldous is a long-established Manchester art and craft supplies business based nearby at 37 Lever Street, while Tara Collette is a Manchester-based banner maker and artist whose work includes custom signs and eye-catching shop-window display pieces. The image has strong value for editorial use around Manchester's creative economy, independent retail, local artists, public art, typography, murals, creative placemaking and the distinctive visual culture of the Northern Quarter. Stevenson Square has long been associated with street art, independent bars, shops, cafes and the city's alternative design scene, and this piece fits into that wider pattern of colourful urban intervention in a dense city-centre setting. The vertical composition emphasises the scale of the lettering and the block-like structure, with upper floors, street activity and surrounding buildings visible around the edges. It can illustrate stories about positive messaging in public space, artist and retailer collaborations, art-led high street identity, Manchester design culture, city-centre regeneration and the role of independent businesses in shaping neighbourhood character. The wording also makes the image suitable for features about work ethic, ambition, creativity, small business, entrepreneurship, student life and maker culture. For picture buyers, the readable slogan, bright colour palette, named collaboration and clear Manchester location make it a flexible stock image for editorial, cultural, lifestyle, education, business and urban arts usage.

His career took him from being one of the key DJs in the acid house movement of the late 1980s to being a remixer of tracks by the likes of Happy Mondays, New Order, Björk, the Orb, the Future Sound of London and My Bloody Valentine.
His production work on Primal Scream's album Screamadelica, adding samples, loops and creating an influential mix of hard rock, house and rave, helped the record win the first ever Mercury Music Prize in 1992 and become one of the most celebrated albums of the 1990s

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ANMBDR - CrossCountry (legal name XC Trains Limited) is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by Arriva UK Trains, operating the New Cross Country franchise. It operates intercity and other long-distance trains across the country, but does not serve Greater London. It operates the UK's longest direct rail service from Aberdeen in the north-east of Scotland to Penzance in the south-west of England. It is one of only two franchised train operating companies that does not operate any stations, the other being Caledonian Sleeper. All services call at Birmingham New Street.
The company operates medium- and long-distance services that run outside of the London area. The network is centred at Birmingham, and all services either terminate at or pass through Birmingham New Street station. Services can be categorised into two types:
Inter-City: long-distance, fast services between the South of England and the North of England or Scotland via Birmingham
these routes are typically operated by Voyagers or HST sets
Regional: medium-distance, stopping or semi-fast services between Birmingham and other cities in the Midlands, as well as some longer runs to Wales and West Anglia. These are usually operated by Turbostars.
CrossCountry's official website does show a distinction between the two types of services (for example, each has a separate timetable booklet), but does not explicitly call them Inter-City and Regional.
The Class 220 Voyager was built to operate Cross Country intercity services. Virgin CrossCountry received 34 four-car sets in 2000/01. All passed with the CrossCountry franchise to Arriva CrossCountry in November 2007

The cross dates from the early to mid-17th century and was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials. Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last.
The adjacent stocks are separately Grade II listed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF5B - A cherry is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus, and is a fleshy drupe (stone fruit).
The cherry fruits of commerce usually are obtained from cultivars of a limited number of species such as the sweet cherry (Prunus avium) and the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus). The name 'cherry' also refers to the cherry tree and its wood, and is sometimes applied to almonds and visually similar flowering trees in the genus Prunus, as in ornamental cherry or cherry blossom. Wild cherry may refer to any of the cherry species growing outside cultivation, although Prunus avium is often referred to specifically by the name wild cherry in the British Isles.
The English word cherry derives from Old Northern French or Norman cherise from the Latin cerasum, referring to an ancient Greek region, Kerasous (Κερασοῦς) near Giresun, Turkey, from which cherries were first thought to be exported to Europe. The indigenous range of the sweet cherry extends through most of Europe, western Asia, and parts of northern Africa, and the fruit has been consumed throughout its range since prehistoric times. A cultivated cherry is recorded as having been brought to Rome by Lucius Licinius Lucullus from northeastern Anatolia, also known as the Pontus region, in 72 BC.
Cherries were introduced into England at Teynham, near Sittingbourne in Kent, by order of Henry VIII, who had tasted them in Flanders.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3AC - Cirencester, occasionally /ˈsɪstər/ (About this soundlisten)
see below for more variations) is a market town in east Gloucestershire, England, 80 miles (130 km) west northwest of London. Cirencester lies on the River Churn, a tributary of the River Thames, and is the largest town in the Cotswold District. It is the home of the Royal Agricultural University, the oldest agricultural college in the English-speaking world, founded in 1840. The town's Corinium Museum is well known for its extensive Roman collection. The Roman name for the town was Corinium, which is thought to have been associated with the ancient British tribe of the Dobunni, having the same root word as the River Churn. The earliest known reference to the town was by Ptolemy in AD 150.
The Church of St. John Baptist, Cirencester is renowned for its Perpendicular Gothic porch, fan vaults and merchants' tombs.
The town also has a Roman Catholic Church of St Peter's
the foundation stone was laid on 20 June 1895. Coxwell Street to the north of Market Square is home to the Baptist Church that was founded in 1651 making it one of the oldest Baptist churches in England. Its current building was started in 1856.
To the west of the town is Cirencester House, the seat of Earl Bathurst and the site of one of the finest landscape gardens in England, laid out by the first Earl Bathurst after 1714.
Abbey House, Cirencester was a country house built on the site of the former Cirencester Abbey following its dissolution and demolition at the English Reformation in the 1530s. The site was granted in 1564 to Richard Master, physician to Queen Elizabeth I. The house was rebuilt and altered at several dates by the Master family, who still own the agricultural estate. By 1897 the house was let, and it remained in the occupation of tenants until shortly after the Second World War. It was finally demolished in 1964.
On Cotswold Avenue is the site of a Roman amphitheatre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF144E - Bag For Life,Weinholts, bakery,Alderley Edge,Cheshire,England,UK is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. A bakery bag for life from Alderley Edge turns a small retail item into evidence of changing shopping habits, brand loyalty and the attempt to reduce single-use plastic. The subject can illustrate reusable bags, local bakeries, sustainable consumer behaviour, Cheshire high streets, food retail, packaging design and everyday environmental choices. The location detail, Alderley Edge, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E5 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P72D36 - People Make Glasgow' unveiled as new city brand
The slogan People Make Glasgow has been unveiled as the new brand name for Scotland's largest city.
It was chosen following a consultation which saw ideas submitted from more than 1,500 people from 42 countries.
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said the process saw words such as real, smart, home, creative, bright and better came through, time and time again.
The brand will be used to market the city at home and abroad and replaces: Glasgow: Scotland with style.
The slogan combines with key ideas to form different messages, such as People Make Glasgow Home and People Make Glasgow Creative.
Glasgow City Council has committed £500,000 this year to develop and promote the brand across the UK and internationally.
'Sense of pride'
Council leader Gordon Matheson said said the new slogan reflects the Glaswegian character.
It's bold, friendly, confident, and it evokes a real sense of pride, he added.
The people of Glasgow are at the heart of this brand - we have created something which presents a truly distinctive identity for the city and on behalf of Glasgow I would like to warmly thank all those who gave their ideas so generously.
The four-week consultation, which was run by the council's city marketing bureau, also attracted 7,000 website hits and involved more than 400,000 Facebook and Twitter users worldwide.
Image caption Business leaders in Glasgow have welcomed the new brand name
Once submissions had been analysed, a creative team from the marketing bureau came up with the new slogan, which was approved by board members.
Councillor Matheson added: Over the past five weeks we have reviewed all of the contributions from Glaswegians and from across the globe.
We also interviewed more than 40 of Glasgow's leaders from the private, public and academic sectors and, overwhelmingly, they told us that what makes Glasgow great is its people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ65M - Plan dropped to end cone tradition on Glasgow's Wellington statue
Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a massive backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the plinth as part of a £65,000 project to refurbish the monument, which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.
It abandoned the plan after a massive social media campaign saw thousands of people sign a petition opposing it.
Campaigners who planned a demonstration now say they will hold a victory rally.
The council had said that raising the height would end a practice which projected a depressing image of Glasgow and would save the £10,000 cost of removing the cone 100 times a year.
Image caption Michael Gray is one of many campaigners who plan to hold a victory rally
The scheme would have seen a new granite-clad concrete base of 86cm (34in) added to the memorial to raise its overall height.
However, the council has reconsidered its decision after an online petition called Save Wellington's Cone, which gathered thousands of signatories in just a few hours, and a Facebook campaign which had planned a rally in support of the cone.
A council spokesman said: The wording of the report was appalling and the leader of the council (Gordon Matheson) has instructed officers to withdraw the planning application.
The petition stated: The cone on Wellington's head is an iconic part of Glasgow's heritage, and means far more to the people of Glasgow and to visitors than Wellington himself ever has.
Raising the statue will, in any case, only result in people injuring themselves attempting to put the cone on anyway: does anyone really think that a raised plinth will deter drunk Glaswegians?

J. & N. Philips and Company was a business established in 1747 by members of the Philips family, and which ceased trading in 1970. Originally based in Tean, Staffordshire, England, the business was a manufacturer of textile products that expanded both by organic growth and by taking over other businesses involved in the manufacture and merchanting of textile products and smallware.
It formed a part of a network of companies operated by the family, whose business interests came to include manufacture of hats and textiles such as linen smallwares, silks and fustians, as well as cotton spinning and dealing, power loom weaving, export merchanting and general warehousing. The family was also involved in politics, with George Philips, Mark Philips and Robert Needham Philips all being Members of Parliament and all promoting the ideals of Manchesterism while in office. George's son, George Richard Philips, was also a member of the House of Commons.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYD1D - Nymphaeaceae is a family of flowering plants, commonly called water lilies. They live as rhizomatous aquatic herbs in temperate and tropical climates around the world. The family contains five genera with about 70 known species. Water lilies are rooted in soil in bodies of water, with leaves and flowers floating on or emergent from the surface. The leaves are round, with a radial notch in Nymphaea and Nuphar, but fully circular in Victoria and Euryale.
Water lilies are a well studied clade of plants because their large flowers with multiple unspecialized parts were initially considered to represent the floral pattern of the earliest flowering plants, and later genetic studies confirmed their evolutionary position as basal angiosperms. Analyses of floral morphology and molecular characteristics and comparisons with a sister taxon, the family Cabombaceae, indicate, however, that the flowers of extant water lilies with the most floral parts are more derived than the genera with fewer floral parts. Genera with more floral parts, Nuphar, Nymphaea, Victoria, have a beetle pollination syndrome, while genera with fewer parts are pollinated by flies or bees, or are self- or wind-pollinated.[3] Thus, the large number of relatively unspecialized floral organs in the Nymphaeaceae is not an ancestral condition for the clade.
Water lilies do not have surface leaves during winter, and therefore the gases in the rhizome lacunae access equilibrium with the gases of the sediment water. The leftover of internal pressure is embodied by the constant streams of bubbles that outbreak when rising leaves are ruptured in the spring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRRJ - Close-up detail of a worn paper label reading Pink 1375 on a ceramic colour jar in the historic colour room at Gladstone Pottery Museum, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The cracked, aged label, black stencilled lettering and dark glazed storage vessel give the photograph a strong documentary feel, showing the practical materials behind pottery decoration rather than the finished ware. The image is useful for editorial and commercial themes around Staffordshire ceramics, The Potteries, colour mixing, ceramic stains, pigments, oxides, glaze ingredients, craft skills, industrial heritage, museum collections, factory interiors and the working culture of a traditional potbank. Gladstone Pottery Museum is a preserved Victorian pottery factory on Uttoxeter Road in Longton, part of Stoke-on-Trent's internationally known ceramics landscape. The museum's displays interpret the processes and supporting rooms that helped make pottery production possible, including throwing, moulding, decorating, firing, colour and gilding. This image concentrates on a small but important object: a labelled colour container, probably once used to identify or store a particular pink ceramic decorating colour or pigment. The torn paper, creases, stains and utilitarian typography suggest repeated workshop use, careful storage and the everyday knowledge of decorators, painters and colour room workers. It can support articles on British manufacturing history, pottery design, ceramic chemistry, women's work in ceramics, Clarice Cliff context, museum conservation, material culture, education, heritage tourism and North Staffordshire industrial archaeology. The close crop, muted indoor light and absence of people make it flexible as an atmospheric background image for stories about colour recipes, factory records, historic craft processes, traditional trades, local identity and the preservation of workshop objects that explain how the Potteries became a global centre for ceramics.

This is one of the best tracks from 'Electric' the pivotal third album by The Cult. Released in 1987, the album marked a deliberate stylistic change in the band from a Gothic rock to a hard rock band. Rick Rubin, the producer on Electric, had been specifically hired to remake the band's sound in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of hard rock and heavy metal in the 1980s.
After the breakthrough success of their second album, Love, the Cult began working on a follow-up with producer Steve Brown. In the summer of 1986, they recorded twelve tracks at the Manor Studio in Oxfordshire. These recordings, which came to be known as the Manor Sessions, were to make up a new album, tentatively entitled Peace. However, upon completion of the recording sessions, the band decided that they were unhappy with the sound, and began to look for a new producer.
The band went on to choose Rick Rubin, who was known for producing albums for hip hop artists and thrash metal band Slayer. These new recordings, with a slightly different track-list and running order, became the album that was released.
Although all twelve of the Manor Sessions tracks were initially scrapped, four of them would turn up as B-sides to singles from Electric. A further five of them appeared on a limited edition EP, and with the release of Rare Cult in 2000, the rest of the unreleased Steve Brown-produced tracks were made available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H2TF8W - This documentary stock photograph shows River Thames Panorama, London, England with stunning sky. The image is centred on St Paul's Cathedral, giving it strong editorial value for stories about London, architecture, tourism, heritage, public realm, night photography and the way the capital presents itself beside the River Thames. The caption and visible treatment indicate wide composition, so the photograph can be used as a real city scene rather than a generic skyline. The wider context includes Sir Christopher Wren's cathedral, City of London identity, baroque architecture, wartime memory and the ceremonial heart of the capital. These are subjects with broad stock-photo demand because they connect recognisable landmarks with themes of history, culture, faith, finance, theatre, regeneration, transport, walking routes and visitor spending. The image can support articles about City of London working life, South Bank tourism, Bankside leisure, London at dusk, cathedral heritage, riverside views, public spaces, cultural venues, urban planning, commercial property and the continuing pull of landmark architecture in news and travel publishing. For SEO and Alamy search, useful composite phrases include London dusk skyline, St Pauls Cathedral evening view, River Thames panorama, Bankside cultural quarter, Shakespeare Globe Theatre exterior, Millennium Bridge London, City of London landmark and Southwark riverside tourism. If the image is black and white, the monochrome style adds a more timeless, architectural feel
if it is in colour, the low-light sky and urban illumination add atmosphere and practical editorial appeal. Its value lies in combining a recognisable subject with a specific viewpoint and mood, suitable for guidebooks, blogs, newspapers, magazines, education, heritage, planning, religion, theatre, travel and city-break content.

Are you looking for love and romance? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Call Me is a play starring Sarah Adams, Christine Clare, Laura Cope, Claire Dean, Katie McArdle and Matthew Stead which was performed at Sweet Grassmarket @ 10:10pm for 70 minutes, on most days during August 2012.
As the blurb says:
By The Slice Theatre Company Presents Call Me! Sponsored by www.TheatreLoverDating.co.uk
Writing and producing together for the first time, sisters Sarah Adams and Becky Adams are heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with their play, dating comedy Call Me!, which received rave reviews and a sell-out run in Manchester last year.
Inspired by the likes of Victoria Wood and Dawn French, writer Sarah Adams has formed new theatre company By The Slice to produce a cringe-worthy yet affectionate romantic comedy alongside her film producer sister Becky. By The Slice invites the audience to come and rejoice with them at the ridiculousness of love and dating! What better way to get over your latest dating disaster than to be able to laugh at someone else's ludicrous misfortunes? Yet on this rollercoaster of humiliation and hilarity, we also unexpectedly find a new humility for love.
Taking all of the available Manchester cast with them, By The Slice will also be introducing some new faces as well as new-to-theatre director Dan Wilson whose credits include directing Sir Ian McKellen and Status Quo in Coronation Street, EastEnders, BBC's Land Girls and 32 Brinkburn Street, and feature film The Roundabout.
Sarah is joined in By The Slice by her sister, Producer Becky Adams. 'Of course initially I was introduced to Call Me! because it's my sister that has written it, but it was clear immediately how funny, engaging and close-to-the-bone the script was, and how well it connected with audiences, and so I quickly got my company Reelscape Productions involved!' says Becky.
Call Me! follows three women on an exposing comedy journey through their all too familiar relationship mishaps. Fed up with their bizarre relationships, our three lead characters decide to visit hippie love therapist Sandy Morris - founder of the Love Yourself To A Love Life Worth Loving movement. This proves an adventure in itself. Meanwhile, the antithesis of the conventional relationship plays out between confident Jenny and clumsy Mike. Will they become the success story of the unexpected? Will any of our characters succeed in banishing the rough from the smooth? Not if Sandy has anything to do with it!
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC09 - Digitalis is a genus of about 20 species of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and biennials commonly called foxgloves.
This genus was traditionally placed in the figwort family Scrophulariaceae, but recent phylogenetic research has placed it in the much enlarged family Plantaginaceae. This genus is native to western and southwestern Europe, western and central Asia and northwestern Africa. The flowers are produced on a tall spike, are tubular, and vary in colour with species, from purple to pink, white, and yellow. The scientific name means finger-like and refers to the ease with which a flower can be fitted over a human fingertip.
The best-known species is the common foxglove, Digitalis purpurea. This biennial plant is often grown as an ornamental plant due to its vivid flowers which range in colour from various purple tints through pink, and purely white. The flowers can also possess various marks and spottings. Other garden-worthy species include D. ferruginea, D. grandiflora, D. lutea and D. parviflora.
The term digitalis is also used for drug preparations that contain cardiac glycosides, particularly one called digoxin, extracted from various plants of this genus. Foxglove has medicinal uses but can also be toxic to humans and other animals

I was a late convert to the value of disco, but this must be a certain classic.
Kool &
the Gang are an American jazz, R&
B, soul, funk and disco group, originally formed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1964. They went through several musical phases during the course of their recording career, starting out with a purist jazz sound, then becoming practitioners of R&
B and funk, progressing to a smooth pop-funk ensemble, and in the post-millennium creating music with a modern, electro-pop sound.
The late 1970s saw a lull in Kool &
the Gang's except for the album 'Open Sesame' which yielded the title track 'Open Sesame' which achieved some success in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. T
hen came new lead singer James 'J.T.' Taylor who joined the group — with this track from 1979, Ladies' Night. Their number one hit in 1980's 'Celebration', from Celebrate!, co-produced by Eumir Deodato. More international hits followed in the early 1980s, including 'Big Fun', 'Get Down on It', and 'Joanna'. Their 1984 album Emergency yielded four top-20 pop hits, including 'Fresh' and 'Cherish'. Their chart presence stopped after Forever. Taylor left the group amicably to pursue a solo career.
In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, town is pronounced ‘toon’, and going out is ‘gannin oot’. Hen and stag nights are big business if ‘yous lot is aal gannin out on the toon!’.
A whole industry has sprung up supporting male strippers, burlesque hen night dance party experiences, casino meals and MTV babes (allegedly..).
Walking around toon on a Saturday night you can see where some of Chris Donald's Viz characters came from. Buster Gonad, The Fat Slags, Sid The Sexist and Brown Bottle are there to be found only a 15 minute walk away from the Quayside. Still, its all a bit of laugh, ,just watch those jelly (jello if you are from the other side of the pond) vodka shots!
Here, the group pose against the Newcastle Millenium bridge, a rare tilting example.

As we arrive at the end of another year, its fair to ask if we have more love in the world now, than we had this time 365 days ago. Some dictators have gone from this world or dissapeared from view and some new ones are exerting their will. Please make it your business to spread some love this year.
Best wishes for 2012 for you, your family and photography. I look forward to seeing everyones new creations.
My final post this year is this one from the late and missed man who spread Jamaican music, much love and the Rastafari movement to the world. He left us in 1981, hopefully we got more love around the world than 30 years ago. Something to consider when you toast in the New Year.
'Could You Be Loved' is a song by Bob Marley &
The Wailers. It was released in 1980 on their last album Uprising and is included on Bob Marley &
The Wailers greatest hits album Legend. It was written in 1979 on an airplane while The Wailers were experimenting on guitar.
In the middle of the song, background singers quote a verse from Bob Marley's first single Judge Not: 'The road of life is rocky
And you may stumble too. So while you point a finger, someone else is judging you'
Some of The Wailers most notable songs were recorded with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and his studio band The Upsetters. During the early 1970s The Upsetters members Aston 'Family Man' Barrett and his brother Carlton (Carlie) Barrett, formed the Wailers Band, providing instrumental backing for The Wailers.
The Wailers recorded groundbreaking reggae songs such as 'Simmer Down', 'Trenchtown Rock', 'Nice Time', 'War', 'Stir It Up' and 'Get Up, Stand Up'.
The Wailers disbanded in 1974 due to Tosh and Livingston's refusal to tour. Bob Marley formed Bob Marley &
The Wailers with Bob Marley himself as guitarist, songwriter and main singer, the Wailers Band as the backing band, and the I Threes as backup vocalists.
The Wailers Band included the brothers Carlton Barrett and 'Family Man' Barrett on drums and bass respectively, Junior Marvin and Al Anderson playing lead guitar, Tyrone Downie and Earl 'Wya' Lindo playing keyboard, and Alvin 'Seeco' Patterson playing percussion. The I Threes, consisted of Bob Marley's wife Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths.
Bob Marley &
The Wailers, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer all enjoyed considerable success as reggae music continued to gain popularity during the 1970s and 1980s.
Several of the group's members have died subsequent to Marley's death in 1981: Carlton Barrett and Tosh in 1987, Braithwaite in 1999, and Smith in 2008. Bunny Wailer and Beverley Kelso are the only surviving members of the group's original line-up.

A car for a lady? This is a track that brings back brilliant memories for me.
According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles &
Albums, the band was named after a phrase from the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood song, 'Jackson', misheard by frontman Paddy McAloon. The correct opening lyrics for 'Jackson' are 'We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout' which McAloon misinterpreted as 'hotter than a prefab sprout'. The rest is history.
This track is from the excellent 'From Langley Park to Memphis' album. It was the first single and only actually reached 44 in the UK charts, although spent a month or so there.
The song is a response to Bruce Springsteen's perceived lyrical style and alleged narrow song repertoire. Pat McAloon suggests that Springsteen's worldview is too restricted and that 'some things hurt more, much more, than cars and girls'. Ironically, the song's popularity is partly due to it being misinterpreted as a 'driving song', leading it to appear on compilation albums such as Summer Cruisin' and Top Gear.
Checkout 'Langley Park' for some of the greatest tracks from the band.

Fiat previewed the all new 500 in March 2007. This was exactly 50 years after the first Fiat 500 was presented. The design of the new 2007 Fiat 500 is based on the 2004 Fiat Trepiuno concept. This car features a distinctive retro-look just like the Volkswagen New Beetle and BMW MINI but is substantially cheaper than those cars.
It has a starting price of €10,500 (similar to how the original Fiat 500 was cheaper than the Volkswagen Beetle and Austin Mini). Fiat shares the underpinnings of the new 500 with Ford for the 2009 Ford Ka. They are made at the Fiat factory in Tychy, Poland.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4587919792 - 'Few plants captivate a nation quite like the Japanese flowering cherry or 'cherry blossom'. Pick up a 100 yen coin and at any time of the year it reminds you of the Sakura.
In Japan cherry blossoms among other things symbolize clouds. This is due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, an aspect of Japanese cultural tradition that is often associated with Buddhistic influence, and which is embodied in the concept of 'mono no aware' (the life of things). The association of the cherry blossom with 'mono no aware' dates back to 18th-century scholar Motoori Norinaga.
The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality. For this reason, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized often in Japanese art, manga, anime, and film, as well as at musical performances for ambient effect. The band Kagrra, which is associated with the visual kei movement, is an example of this latter phenomenon. There is at least one popular folk song, originally meant for the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), titled 'Sakura', and several pop songs. The flower is also represented on all manner of consumer goods in Japan, including kimono, stationery, and dishware.
Cherry blossom is an omen of good fortune and is also an emblem of love, affection and represents spring. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art.
At Himeji Castle Japan During World War II, the cherry blossom was used to motivate the Japanese people, to stoke nationalism and militarism among the populace. Japanese pilots would paint them on the sides of their planes before embarking on a suicide mission, or even take branches of the trees with them on their missions. There is a plane of this type in the Manchester museum of science of industry. My friend Josef Knocke always comes to mind when I look at it as does a particularly tasteless joke, that I would not repeat here for a family audience.
A cherry blossom painted on the side of the bomber symbolized the intensity and ephemerality of life. In this way, the aesthetic association was altered such that falling cherry petals came to represent the sacrifice of youth in suicide missions to honor the emperor. The government even encouraged the people to believe that the souls of downed warriors were reincarnated in the blossoms.
In its colonial enterprises, aparently imperial Japan often planted cherry trees as a means of 'claiming occupied territory as Japanese space'. Consider this as you pass below those lovely pink blossoms...

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4556321256 - 'A picture of spring just about to emerge!
Spotted on Knutsford Road Grappenhall, Cheshire, purple cherry blossom on a tree just about ready to open. In Japan the cherry blossom has nearly mystical spring significance.
During the Heian Period (794–1191), Japanese sought to emulate many practices from China, including the social phenomenon of flower viewing (hanami), where the imperial households, poets, singers and other aristocrats would gather and celebrate under the blossoms. In Japan, cherry trees were planted and cultivated for their beauty, for the adornment of the grounds of the nobility of Kyoto, at least as early as 794. In China, the ume 'plum' tree (actually a species of apricot) was held in highest regard, but by the middle of the ninth century, the cherry blossom had replaced the plum as the favored species in Japan.
Every year the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry-blossom front) as it moves northward up the archipelago with the approach of warmer weather via nightly forecasts following the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. It proceeds into areas at the higher altitudes and northward, arriving in Hokkaidō in the colder east a few weeks later. Japanese pay close attention to these forecasts and turn out in large numbers at parks, shrines, and temples with family and friends to hold flower-viewing parties.
Hanami festivals celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossom and for many are a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. The custom of hanami dates back many centuries in Japan: the eighth-century chronicle Nihon Shoki records hanami festivals being held as early as the third century CE.
Most Japanese schools and public buildings have cherry blossom trees outside of them. Since the fiscal and school year both begin in April, in many parts of Honshū, the first day of work or school coincides with the cherry blossom season.

The Tulip is native to the old world, southern europe right across to China and central asia. A helpful and knowledgable chap in my local florests in Knutsford road told me that the most varied ones grow in the Hindu Kush and on the steppes of Kazakhstan (fictional home of Sacha Baron Cohen's character Borat). He also told me that most tulips are derived from 'Tulipa gesneriana'. In retrospect I wonder if my other florist near the MSCC cateliver bridge '2lips' (geddit? www.2lipsflorists.co.uk/ ), would have been as informative.
Plants are perennials from bulbs and typically have two to six leaves. The cup shaped flowers typically have three petals and three sepals, which are most often termed 'tepals' because they are nearly indestinguishable.
The flowers have six stamens (yellow here) and the overies are three lobed. How nature likes threes eh?
Europians were taken by the spring flowers. Around 1634 to 1637, the early enthusiasm for the new tulips triggered a speculative frenzy now known as the 'tulip mania'. The tulip bulbs were then considered a form of currency. Not so far away from our own times when the 'dot com' boom and sub-prime lending, confirms we have actually not come that far from those heady days of dutch speculators over 450 years ago.
My advice, 'Buy Tulips' :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4050532527 - 'Hard to see in this light, but these are painted in the colours of Aston Villa, just a stones throw down the road. Behind is part of the Birmingham skyline of tower blocks.
Nechells became a densely populated area during the 19th century, with mass development of houses and factories taking place. Mass immigration occurred from Ireland.
After World War II, further immigration occurred from parts of the Commonwealth, mostly the West Indies and the Indian Sub Continent.
By the 1950s, however, many of the homes in Nechells had been reduced to 'slums' and were unfit for human habitation. People were living in homes without electricity, running water, bathrooms or indoor toilets. The Gas Works caused a continuous unpleasant smell.
The face of Nechells changed dramatically during the 1960s, with the decaying Victorian terraces being cleared and the area redeveloped with new houses and tower blocks. Some families remained in the new homes that had been built around Nechells, but there weren't enough new homes to rehouse all of the area's original residents, and as a result some families moved to new housing estates like Castle Vale and Chelmsley Wood. The new homes were certainly a big improvement on their predecessors, but if anything the Nechells area became worse as unemployment and crime soared.
The development of high rise flats in Neachells had actually started in the 1950s, and it was the home of Birmingham's very first tower block - Queens Tower - which was completed in 1954 and is still standing today. However, many of the tower blocks in the Neachells area were demolished in the 1990s to make way for new low rise private and rented housing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPB2 - Top of the Pops (TOTP) is a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006. The programme was the world's longest-running weekly music show. For most of its history, it was broadcast on Thursday evenings on BBC One. Each show consisted of performances of some of the week's best-selling popular music records, usually excluding any tracks moving down the chart, including a rundown of that week's singles chart. This was originally the Top 20, though this varied throughout the show's history. The Top 30 was used from 1969, and the Top 40 from 1984.
Dusty Springfield's I Only Want to Be with You was the first song featured on TOTP, while the Rolling Stones were the first band to perform, with I Wanna Be Your Man. Snow Patrol were the last act to play live on the weekly show when they performed their single Chasing Cars.
Editions of the programme from 1976 onwards started being repeated on BBC Four in 2011 and are aired on most Friday evenings as of January 2023 the repeat run has reached 1994. Episodes featuring disgraced presenters and artists such as Jimmy Savile, Dave Lee Travis, Jonathan King, Ian Watkins, R Kelly, Rolf Harris, and Gary Glitter are no longer repeated
2005: The beginning of the end
Figures had plummeted to below three million, prompting an announcement by the BBC that the show was going to move, again, to Sunday evenings on BBC Two, thus losing the prime-time slot on BBC One that it had maintained for more than forty years.
This move was widely reported as a final sidelining of the show, and perhaps signalled its likely cancellation. At the time, it was insisted that this was so the show would air immediately after the official announcement of the new top 40 chart on Radio 1, as it was thought that by the following Friday, the chart seemed out of date. The final Top of the Pops to be shown on BBC One (barring Christmas and New Year specials) was broadcast on Monday 1

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P72CWA - People Make Glasgow' unveiled as new city brand

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E6 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0WE16 - Taken on 28 Jan 2023, this photograph shows Made in Sheffield, red neon sign, Kelam Island, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK, S3 8RD. The location is Kelam Island, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK, S3 8RD. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains readable commercial or civic signage, colour, typography and street context. Sheffield's name is internationally linked with steel, cutlery, engineering and industrial skill, so the neon wording works as a shorthand for civic identity, manufacturing heritage and northern regeneration. It can be used in editorial features, business reports, local-history writing, travel guides, public-policy explainers, educational material and SEO-led stock-photo searches needing a specific real-world image. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include South Yorkshire, Sheffield, Made in Sheffield, red, neon, sign, made, making, manufacturing, industry, Kelham Island, Kellham Island, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3AB - Cirencester, occasionally /ˈsɪstər/ (About this soundlisten)
see below for more variations) is a market town in east Gloucestershire, England, 80 miles (130 km) west northwest of London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98K1 - The City of Manchester in North-West England has traditionally been represented by various symbols. Most of these symbols are derived from heraldic emblems contained within the city's official heraldic achievement, which was officially adopted when the Borough of Manchester was granted city status in 1842. Notably, the motif of the worker bee has been widely used to represent the city as a symbol of industry
The worker bee has long been a symbol of Manchester and of the city's hard-working past.
And while every other city in the north of England has a heritage built upon industry - there is a reason that the bee symbol is a part of Manchester's coat of arms which was given to the city in 1842.
In the 1800s Manchester was awash with textile mills that were commonly described as hives of activity' and the workers inside them compared to bees.
Busy bee' is still a term associated with industriousness and hard work.
These days Manchester is a city mostly associated with a deep and rich pop culture and a musical history that has influenced artists all over the globe. Coincidentally, the former Sankeys nightclub in Ancoats is housed in the former Beehive Mill on Jersey Street.
The Cottonopolis logo - the Manchester worker bee
You won't just find the bee on bins dotted around the city though. The bee can be seen on the clock face of the Palace Hotel, on the mosaic flooring at Manchester Town Hall and even above the arches of Links of London.
Furthermore, urban beekeeping even takes place on the roof of The Printworks , thus producing local honey.
Following the Manchester Arena bombing on May 22, 2017, the worker bee became a symbol of unity and defiance in the wake of the attack.
It has come to represent Manchester's indomitable spirit.
An image of 22 Manchester worker bees was emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Each bee, pictured swarming around a honey heart, represents one of the innocent people
