Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWXD - A commemorative sculpture showing two opposing First World War soldiers meeting and shaking hands, symbolising the Christmas Truce of 1914 when British and German troops briefly laid down their weapons along sections of the Western Front. The figures are portrayed in period military greatcoats and helmets, leaning forward in a gesture of mutual respect and humanity.
The sculpture is installed in the garden of St Luke's Church, widely known as Liverpool's Bombed Out Church, itself a powerful symbol of conflict and loss after being destroyed during the Second World War Blitz. The presence of red remembrance poppies in the foreground reinforces themes of sacrifice, memory and peace.
Created by Liverpool-based sculptor Andy Edwards, the artwork forms part of temporary and permanent installations that use public art to engage with shared historical memory. Set within a central urban space, the piece connects international wartime history with Liverpool's own experiences of conflict, resilience and remembrance, attracting visitors, historians and photographers throughout the year, particularly around Remembrance Sunday and Christmas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T10DPJ - H.M.Pasties was set up by Lee Wakeham, an ex-offender with the aim to ?bring out the good inside' by employing ex-offenders to make and sell delicious handmade Cornish-style pasties.
Inspired by the success of Bad Boys Bakery, The Barker Baker and the Clink Charity
who now boast a 41% reduction in reoffending for people involved in the bakery, H.M.Pasties was born in 2018 with support from the Big Lottery Fund, Forward Trust and the Santander Foundation.
With over 10.5 million people in the UK holding a criminal record many face huge difficulties in gaining employment post sentence due to the stigma that surrounds it.
H.M.Pasties wants to stop talent and lives from being wasted. They are passionate about helping those who feel left behind to find fulfilling work in order to enhance their wellbeing and help them feel part of a thriving local community. By offering a transitional employment programme which provides training and support ex-offenders can become ready for the world of work, making long term employment a reality.
H.M.Pasties was created to supply high quality, handmade traditional pasties and other baked goods to customers across Greater Manchester and add real social benefit.
This is achieved by not only sourcing ingredients from the Prison Estate but also by employing people with convictions in the manufacture, sales and distribution of the pasties whilst simultaneously offering peer mentoring support to enable them to build new careers and live a life free of crime.
In order to become a truly independent, self sustaining business, HM Pasties is now a stand alone limited company looking to build on our now established brand to create even more social impact.
Dignity, self-respect and a stable income are crucial to preventing reoffending, and securing employment is the key to achieving those goals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX18BM - Manchester & District Home for Lost Dogs was founded in 1893 by a group of Manchester Businessmen who were concerned about the large number of stray dogs roaming the City.
The leading members of the group included Mr. Megson a printer and stationer, (who's firm is still very active) and Mr. Alfred Nixon a leading Chartered Accountant in Manchester, it was his son and partners who continued to play a leading part in the administration of the Home until shortly after the last war in 1945.
Over the years the City of Manchester has grown around Manchester Dogs' Home and it is now very much an inner city rescue centre. To off set the inner city environment of our Manchester Home we regenerated a run down site in 1999, that is now know as Cheshire Dogs' Home
In 1999 we purchased a former run down boarding kennels, this has become the flagship of the two homes and a Centre of Excellence. The site is 11.5 acres in total with a Specialist Care Unit for dogs that provides intense care for the dogs that need it the most, pregnant bitches, nursing mums and dogs that do not adjust well to the traditional kennel environment at Manchester Dogs' Home.
2017 New Adoption Unit - The light filled atrium is proving a popular place for visitors to meet and interact with the dogs, while each of the 30 individual kennels offers maximum comfort for our canine guests.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1F5KP - Liverpool Cenotaph stands on St George's Plateau, to the east of St George's Hall in Liverpool, England. It was erected as a memorial to those who had fallen in the First World War. The dates of the Second World War were subsequently added. The cenotaph consists of a rectangular block of stone on a stone platform, with bronze, low-relief sculptures on the sides depicting marching troops and mourners. It was designed by Lionel Budden, with carving by Herbert Tyson Smith. Initially designated as a Grade II listed building, its status was raised to Grade I in 2013.

The cenotaph was designated as a Grade II listed building on 28 June 1952. On 8 November 2013, the designation was raised to Grade I. The reasons given for the designation include its design context with its impressive location adjacent to St George's Hall. Also noted is the architectural interest of the cenotaph, with its horizontal lines forming a foil to the vertical columns of the hall. Referring to its sculptural interest, the citation states that the sculptural work is exceptional and is arguably Tyson Smith's finest and most powerful work. The design is considered to have contemporary significance in that rather than using allegory and heroic idealisation, it employs powerful and modern realist portrayals. The quality of its craftsmanship is praised, and it is also to have group value in its location near other listed buildings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WT1 - This photograph captures a glowing neon Fish & Chips sign displayed outside a takeaway food premises in the historic city of York, North Yorkshire. The bright neon lettering stands out strongly against the surrounding streetscape, acting as both a functional advertisement and a familiar visual marker of traditional British fast food culture.
Fish and chips has long been regarded as a staple of British cuisine, closely associated with working-class history, seaside towns, and urban high streets. Neon signage such as this became especially common during the mid to late twentieth century, valued for its visibility, durability, and ability to attract passing customers after dark. Today, these signs often evoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining a practical part of modern hospitality trade.
The image was taken during the evening or night, when the neon lighting becomes most prominent, casting a warm, inviting glow that contrasts with the darker surroundings. In a city like York, known for its Roman origins, medieval streets, and strong tourism economy, such signage highlights the coexistence of historic architecture with contemporary commercial life.
Photographs of neon food signs are widely used to illustrate themes of British culture, urban nightlife, traditional cuisine, travel, and everyday street scenes. This image reflects the enduring popularity of fish and chips and its role as both a cultural symbol and a living part of daily life in cities across England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A92 - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNY - Wanting to increase their presence and market share, Greggs opened their first Moto-operated franchised bakery at Lymm truckstop in early 2012, with high hopes. Following good sales a second store was opened at Birch eastbound the following June, and it was then confirmed that most Moto services would get one. Moto have also been opening franchises at some Extra services.
What makes Greggs a little bit different to other new brands is that most units have been modified so customers can visit without entering the main amenity building. This helped Moto's tax accounts: by not offering the option of eat-in food, the food was exempt from VAT, although the notorious pasty tax complicated things. As with most service station franchises, prices are inflated and the menu is altered slightly.
Greggs had never agreed to franchised stores before the Moto deal, but following its success they opened franchises with Euro Garages and Applegreen too (in the UK only). Greggs was now being added to petrol stations across the country, and Euro Garages started introducing the country's first Greggs drive thrus.
On the baked goods front, Moto had been using Upper Crust as a bakery brand, although this sold fewer hot goods and began to lose ground to Moto's other stores. In 2011 they also introduced West Cornwall Pasty Co., mostly in stands outside the services. Other operators have responded to Greggs with the likes of The Cornish Bakery, Pret a Manger and The Pasty Shop.
In line with Greggs's rules, service stations in the West Country are not allowed to sell Cornish pasties, for fear of upsetting the locals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GRT0 - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873?74 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873?74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about ?4,000

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PYX9B0 - The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate military personnel who have died in war, and represents a common or field poppy, Papaver rhoeas. Inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and promoted by Moina Michael, they were first adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914?1918). They were then adopted by military veterans' groups in parts of the British Empire.
Today, they are mostly used in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, to commemorate their servicemen and women killed in all conflicts. There, small artificial poppies are often worn on clothing leading up to Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, and poppy wreaths are often laid at war memorials. In Australia and New Zealand, they are also worn on Anzac Day.
The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has caused some controversy, with some?including British Army veterans?arguing that it has become excessive, is being used to marshal support behind British military campaigns, and that public figures are pressured to wear poppies.
In the United Kingdom, remembrance poppies are sold by The Royal British Legion (RBL). This is a charity providing financial, social, political and emotional support to those who have served or who are currently serving in the British Armed Forces, and their dependants. They are sold on the streets by volunteers in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The remembrance poppy is the trademark of The Royal British Legion. The RBL state, The red poppy is our registered mark and its only lawful use is to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal
its yearly fundraising drive in the weeks before Remembrance Day. The RBL says these poppies are worn to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today. Other poppy merchandise is sold throughout the year as part of the ongoing fundraising.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5D5 - The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies (shape-shifting water spirits), standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron, in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse-powered heritage across Scotland.
The sculptures were opened to the public in October 2013 . As part of the project, they will have their own visitor centre, and sit beside a newly developed canal turning pool and extension. This canal extension reconnects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the River Forth, and improves navigation between the East and West of Scotland.
The name was chosen by Scottish Canals at the inception of The Helix project, in 2005. The Kelpies name reflected the mythological transforming beasts possessing the strength and endurance of 10 horses
a quality that is analogous with the transformational change and endurance of Scotland's inland waterways. The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, ploughs, barges and coalships that shaped the geographical layout of the Falkirk area.
According to sculptor Andy Scott, The original concept of mythical water horses was a valid starting point for the artistic development of the structures. He also said that he took that concept and moved with it towards a more equine and contemporary response, shifting from any mythological references towards a socio-historical monument intended to celebrate the horse's role in industry and agriculture as well as the obvious association with the canals as tow horses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY08RX - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T0X - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment ? a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance ? would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KGP - This image shows a red poppy wreath laid against a stone war memorial in Grappenhall and Thelwall, near Warrington in Cheshire, as part of Remembrance Day commemorations. The memorial bears the names of local men who lost their lives during the First World War, with dates spanning 1914 to 1918 carved into the stone.
The poppy wreath, traditionally associated with remembrance in the UK and Commonwealth countries, symbolises sacrifice, loss, and collective memory. Its placement reflects long-standing national and local customs observed each November to honour those who served and died in conflict.
Village and parish war memorials such as this play a central role in community remembrance, providing a focal point for ceremonies, silence, and reflection. The close-up framing highlights the contrast between the bright red poppies and the weathered stone inscription, reinforcing the enduring connection between present-day remembrance and historic loss.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering Remembrance Day, First World War history, local heritage, civic commemoration, and the continuing cultural importance of war memorials within British towns and villages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE78T - The present market, located on Southwark Street and Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge. It was first mentioned in 1276, although the market itself claims to have existed since 1014 and probably much earlier and was subsequently moved south of St Margaret's church on the High Street. The City of London received a royal charter from Edward VI in 1550 to control all markets in Southwark (see Guildable Manor), which was confirmed by Charles II in 1671. However, the market caused such traffic congestion that, in 1754, it was abolished by an Act of Parliament.
The Act allowed for the local parishioners to set up another market on a new site, and in 1756, it began again on a 4.5-acre (18,000 m2) site in Rochester Yard. During the 19th century, it became one of London's most important food markets due to its strategic position near the riverside wharves of the Pool of London.
The retail market operates Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The wholesale market operates on all weekday mornings from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Three attackers from the 2017 London Bridge attack ran to the area, where they stabbed and killed people with knives before they were shot dead by armed police. The market was then closed for 11 days following the attack

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE793 - The present market, located on Southwark Street and Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral on the southern end of London Bridge, is a successor to one that originally adjoined the end of London Bridge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW6 - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.
During the Victorian era, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south east of London because of the prevailing westerly wind, with the result that the East End was settled more by the working classes, while the western part of the city was home to higher social classes. The working class were poor and favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply and easy to prepare.
The savoury pie had long been a traditional food, and its small handsized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust, and filled with cheap minced meat, usually mutton. Adding cheap mashed potatoes, together with a sauce made with fish stock and parsley, made it a plate-based sit-down meal.
Jellied eels are often associated with pie and mash, as European eels cooked in gelatine also became a common worker's meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at that time. Supply was plentiful through the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market.
Since 2010, as revealed in a joint study by the Zoological Society of London and the Environment Agency, the number of eels captured in research traps in the River Thames fell from 1,500 in 2005 to 50 in 2010, meaning most eels used in pie and mash shops are now from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC71 - A pasty is a British baked pastry, a traditional variety of which is particularly associated with Cornwall, South West England, but has spread all over the British Isles. It is made by placing an uncooked filling, typically meat and vegetables, in the middle of a flat shortcrust pastry circle, bringing the edges together in the middle, and crimping over the top to form a seal before baking.
The traditional Cornish pasty, which since 2011 has had Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in Europe, is filled with beef, sliced or diced potato, swede (also known as yellow turnip or rutabaga ? referred to in Cornwall and other parts of the West Country as turnip) and onion, seasoned with salt and pepper, and baked. Today, the pasty is the food most associated with Cornwall. It is a traditional dish and accounts for 6% of the Cornish food economy. Pasties with many different fillings are made, and some shops specialise in selling pasties.
The origins of the pasty are unclear, though there are many references to them throughout historical documents and fiction. The pasty is now popular worldwide because of the spread of Cornish miners and sailors from across Cornwall, and variations can be found in Australia, Mexico, the United States, Ulster and elsewhere.
Pasties resemble turnovers from many other cuisines and cultures, including the bridie in Scotland, empanada in Spanish-speaking countries, pirog in Eastern Europe, samsa in Central Asia, curry puff in Southeast Asia, and shaobing in China

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF21T8 - Astley Green Colliery Winding Gear Panorama where machinery has been preserved.
On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building status.
The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The colliery began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south Lancashire Coalfield. Had it not been for the increasing demand for coal, at that time, the project would not have been viable. The coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet of wet and unstable ground. These factors made the sinking of the shaft a very expensive proposition. The novelty of many of the requirements tested the ingenuity of the engineers during the construction, so much so that a paper, on the sinking of the shaft, was presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers. The colliery had a lifespan of only 62 years, finally closing its gates in 1970.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4608369781 - 'Dave and Sarah's shop is the latest business to earn a decent crust in Crewe. It was Officially opened by Councillor Margaret Simon, who is Mayor for Cheshire East. This is the first francise for the Brampton Pie Company outside Cambridgeshire.
Slightly cheesily at the official opening Councillor Simon said, “It’s a great vote of confidence that Brampton’s has chosen to set up in Crewe and can only add to the town’s economic growth. I have also become a personal fan and regularly pop in for a pie at lunchtime, as they are located irresistibly close to Crewe’s Municipal Buildings.” I did not check with Dave and Sarah how many pies had in fact been purchased / consumed by the local elected elite, when I popped in to say hello to my old work mate.
Crewe is in fact slightly south of what I would probably term 'Pie Central' in the UK, Wigan. While justly famous for its 1970's Northern Soul 'Wigan casino' pies are a large slice of the Wigan economy.
The annual World Pie Eating Championship is usually held at Harry's Bar on Wallgate, Wigan. The competition has been held since 1992. In 2006, due to relentless pressure from the Vegetarian Society a vegetarian version was added.
In the 2006 competition, the meat and potato pies were all 12 cm (5 in) in diameter with a depth of 3.5 cm (1.5 in). In the separate vegetarian contest, the pies were 10 cm (4 in) by 3 cm (1.2 in).[3]
In the 2007 competition, entries included a competitor's dog, Charlie, who had eaten 20 pies and damaged a further 10 the night before the competition, nearly jeopardising the event.
The last two years victors have been
Fred Wyatt, a 61-year-old warehouse packer won the 2008 Championship, which was broadcast live on the internet by pay-per-view. In 2009
Barry Rigby, a warehouseman won, eating a pie in a record 45 seconds.
Controversy was caused in 2005 when pies were imported (out of the Wigan area) from nearby Farnworth, Bolton and local Wigan pies were sidelined, resulting in a four-man strong protest. A similar situation arose in 2009, with pies being sourced from Adlington.
More controversy was caused in 2006 when the competition was changed (to meet government healthy-eating guidelines) from the number of pies consumed in a given time, to the fastest time to consume a single pie.
Wiganers are proud to be called pie-eaters, but the nickname is not thought to be because of their appetite for the delicacy. The name is said to date from the 1926 General Strike when Wigan miners were starved back to work before their counterparts in surrounding towns and were forced to eat 'humble pie'.

The flowers of most poppy species are attractive and are widely cultivated as annual or perennial ornamental plants. This has resulted in a number of commercially important cultivars, such as the Shirley poppy, a cultivar of Papaver rhoeas and semi-double or double (flore plena) forms of the opium poppy Papaver somniferum and oriental poppy (Papaver orientale). Poppies of several other genera are also cultivated in gardens.

The current (9th) bishop is the Right Revd Christopher Cocksworth and the current Dean is The Very Revd John Witcombe .
The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St. Mary's, a monastic building, only a few ruins of which remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church later designated Cathedral, that remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michael's Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former and a celebration of 20th-century architecture.
