Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WT7 - Vivid stylised graphic presents the monumental west front of York Minster in strong shades of red, orange and cream against a clear blue background. The low-angle composition exaggerates the scale and vertical character of the cathedral, drawing attention to its twin western towers, pointed arches, pinnacles, tracery and the expansive Great West Window. Bold blocks of flat colour simplify the complex medieval architecture while retaining the instantly recognisable form of one of York's defining landmarks.
The artwork uses the visual language of classic travel posters and contemporary graphic design. Its restricted palette creates a striking, high-contrast image suitable for tourism promotion, destination branding, souvenirs and cultural advertising. Large white lettering at the bottom identifies YORK MINSTER, turning the architectural illustration into a direct celebration of the city and its ecclesiastical heritage.
York Minster stands in the historic centre of York and is formally known as the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York. The building is a major place of Christian worship, a prominent visitor attraction and an enduring symbol of the city. Its Gothic fabric developed over several centuries, with the west front characterised by elaborate stone carving, tall towers and richly decorated windows. The graphic interprets these features rather than documenting them photographically, using simplified lines, strong perspective and saturated colour to create an idealised impression.
The image is relevant to York tourism, British cathedral architecture, medieval heritage, religious buildings, graphic art, poster design, architectural illustration and city-break promotion. It also conveys how historic monuments are repackaged through modern visual culture, transforming detailed stone craftsmanship into bold commercial artwork. The supplied location is Deangate, York, YO1 7HH, England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1FP3 - Albion, translated to present-day terms, means ˜white' and is often associated with all things English. The present day ambience of the Albion's interior reflects this translation and has firm connections with the Great War going far beyond the modern ˜concept' pub of today.
Mike Mercer has run the Albion Inn for over 37 years and has created and captured the essence of the Great War 1914-18 in this last remaining classic Victorian corner street pub within the City Walls of Chester.
Albion Street, and the adjoining Volunteer Street both lead to the former Drill Hall, which was a recruiting centre during the First World War.
Many a young lad would have spent his King's Shilling in the bar of the Albion before going to face the horrors of the Western Front.
The Albion Inn dates from the late 1880's and Mike and Christina have managed to retain the traditional three room layout covering Vault, Snug and Lounge, containing Great War artefacts and pictures, which give a distinct period feel, together with posters and enamelled advertising signs.
At the same time, The Albion provides high standards of food, drink and accommodation, worthy of its entry in many National and International Guides and Publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KX3W - The Electric Cinema is a cinema in Notting Hill, London. One of the oldest working film theatres in Britain, it became Britain's first black-owned cinema in 1993, and remained black-owned until it was sold in 2000.
As of 2022, after a couple of changes of hands, the cinema is also known as the Electric Portobello, with a second screen at the old Television Centre at White City called the Electric White City
The Electric Cinema first opened in London's Portobello Road on 24 February 1910. It was one of the first buildings in Britain to be designed specifically for motion picture exhibition, and was one of the first buildings in the vicinity to be supplied with electricity. Its first film was Henry VIII, screened on 23 February 1911.
The venue opened 18 years before talkies became the norm, so had no facilities to broadcast sound. The cinema was soon eclipsed by the huge picture palaces that became fashionable during the 1930s but, despite being shuttered for brief periods, it has remained in almost continual use until the present day.
Designed by architect Gerald Seymour Valentin in the Edwardian Baroque style, it originally opened as the Electric Cinema Theatre, with 600 seats. During World War I an angry mob attacked the Electric, believing that its German-born manager was signalling to Zeppelin raiders from the roof, after nearby Arundel Gardens was hit by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin
Later, in 1932, the Electric became the Imperial Playhouse cinema, though by this time the Portobello Road area had become run down, along with the rest of Notting Hill. During this time, the venue's nickname among locals was The Bughole.
During WWII the venue was attended by up to 4000 per week, despite the Luftwaffe's night-time bombing raids.[9] During the late 1940s the notorious mass murderer John Christie (1899“1953) of nearby 10 Rillington Place is said to have worked at the Electric as a projectionist
It is a Grade II* Listed building.

After moving back to his hometown Doctor Duncan was appointed as Medical Health Officer on 1 st January 1847, the first of this type of Senior Government role in Britain.
The pub, dating back to 1901, was built to house Pearl Insurance and is well known for its elaborately tiled interior. Now, in honour of its namesake, it houses an authentic Victorian pharmacy cabinet.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADE44D - Hindi cinema, often known as Bollywood and formerly as Bombay cinema, is the Indian Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The term is a portmanteau of Bombay and Hollywood. The industry is related to Cinema of South India and other Indian film industries, making up Indian Cinema”the world's largest by number of feature films produced.
In 2017, Indian cinema produced 1,986 feature films, with Bollywood as its largest filmmaker, producing 364 Hindi films the same year. Bollywood represents 43 percent of Indian net box-office revenue
Tamil and Telugu cinema represent 36 percent, and the remaining regional cinema constituted 21 percent in 2014. Bollywood is one of the largest centres of film production in the world. In 2001 ticket sales, Indian cinema (including Bollywood) reportedly sold an estimated 3.6 billion tickets worldwide, compared to Hollywood's 2.6 billion tickets sold. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGAX8 - The Temple Bar is a public house located at 46“48 Temple Bar in the Temple Bar area of Dublin, Ireland. Standing at the corner of Temple Lane South, the first pub on the site was reputedly licensed in the early 19th century.
The pub building at 48 Temple Bar is listed by Dublin City Council on its Record of Protected Structures, and is recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as being built c.‰1840.
History
The Temple Bar area, in which the building stands, was so-named in the 17th century, owing to its association with Sir William Temple, father of Sir John Temple, who owned a house and gardens there.
Some sources associate the public house with James Harrison, a young publican who previously worked in his father's pub grocery business at 48 City Quay, and who reputedly obtained a licence for a new pub in the area in May 1819. According to related sources, Harrison sold his business to Cornelius O'Meara, a grocer, tea, wine and spirit merchant, in 1835. O'Meara, who also had another pub at 1 Wood Quay, remained in Temple Bar for around a decade
In 1951, the Fitzgerald family purchased the property. They stayed for ten years, with William Flannery arriving in 1961.
As of 2012, the owners were the Cleary family, who purchased the pub in 1992. At that point traditional features such as the Georgian style wyatt windows were reinstated and the pub changed to its current name. The business was expanded in the first part of the 21st century with the acquisition of adjacent properties, including The Temple Bar Trading Company shop, which opened at number 46. This section features a life-size bronze statue of James Joyce and a beer garden

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AF144E - Bag For Life,Weinholts, bakery,Alderley Edge,Cheshire,England,UK is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. A bakery bag for life from Alderley Edge turns a small retail item into evidence of changing shopping habits, brand loyalty and the attempt to reduce single-use plastic. The subject can illustrate reusable bags, local bakeries, sustainable consumer behaviour, Cheshire high streets, food retail, packaging design and everyday environmental choices. The location detail, Alderley Edge, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

The Berlin Cathedral has never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg (under this name 1945“2003) is based at St. Mary's Church and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. ?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Photobooth was the first EP from St Albans dance punk lads Friendly Fires in mid 2006. It more or less slipped under the radar until the bands full first album came out. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of the Manchester Factory label 'Section 25' LP 'Always Now'. (Maybe a track from them later in this series).
The first self titled album was certified double gold in the UK. The band was nominated for a Best Breakthrough Award at The South Bank Show Awards and for ‘Best Dancefloor Filler’ at the NME Awards. They were also second on the bill on the NME Awards Tour 2009.
On 21 July 2009, the band was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. On 19 January 2010, the band was nominated for two Brit Awards
Best British Group and British Breakthrough Act.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4392932861 - 'The three graces on the Liverpool mersey waterfront at dusk, after rain showers.
These important architectural landmarks are:
The Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society. Now Deutsche Bank.
The Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
The Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Added to this left and right is the new Beatles exhiition and the museum of Liverpool life.
Work commenced in 2007 to build a canal link between the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the South Docks. The £22 million pound 1.6 mile extension to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal was officially opened on 25 March 2009. It opens to boaters at the end of April and links the 127 miles of the existing canal to the city’s South Docks, passing Pier Head and the famous Three Graces. The Pier Head was in this form for the 2008 city of culture celebrations.
At first, the Prince's Landing Stage was situated at the Pier Head to serve the trans-Atlantic liner service. There were many stages built during Liverpool's history, the most recent opened in the 1890s and was joined to the neighbouring George's Landing Stage, situated to the south. After further lengthening took place in the early twentieth century, the combined structure originally measured nearly 3,000 feet, almost half a mile. Both were scrapped in 1973, following the termination of trans-Atlantic services from Liverpool.
In the three years or so I worked in Liverpool, Pier Head served as a major bus interchange. There was also a very poor Beefeater / Berni Inn pub at the Pier head too, where the Beatles exhibition is today.

Its modus operandi is bingo and it has not been a place to see films since the late 1960's. That's a good 40 years plus.
All the old balcony seats are intact and rumour has it that the upper level is haunted. It felt a little like Derek Acora might pop out at any minute when I was up there. A very brilliant yet spooky place indeed.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4343129726 - 'Grannies old clock, still right a couple of times a day.
It is wound by two stout keys and originates in the 1920's or older. A mantlepiece clock that had seen numerous high teas, 'porridge breakfasts with homemade jam' and time to go to 'bedfordshire up the wooden hill' as well as two world wars, a moon landing and the illegal removal of a few dictators.
When made, most of the world map was still pink and the British Empire ran like clockwork. Today its own clockwork doesn't run that smooth.
