The heating and ventilation are in combination by means of washed air being driven by electric fans from an air chamber in the basement to the several floors and departments. The erection was at first attended with much difficulty, owing to a canal running across the site, the navigation of which was not interfered with. The main structure is of steel. This system enabled the architects to have the building erected at great speed. As soon as the stanchions and main beams of a floor were in position the Fram fireproof floor arching followed on, thus all waiting for the wall erections was avoided. The first stanchion in the basement was fixed in March, and in October the counters, lifts, electric wiring, etc., were being put in position. We refer to this, as in a building of this class speed, coupled with sound construction, is of great financial value to the proprietors. The exterior is in Burmantofts halfglaze green terra-cotta to the firstfloor level, and upwards in half-glaze buff terra-cotta and deep red bricks. The roof is covered with green slates and green terra-cotta ridge tiles. The architects are Messrs Charles Heathcote and Sons, of Manchester, and Savoycourt, London, and the builders are Messrs Robert Neill and Sons, Manchester. [11 November 1904 page 685]

In September 2009, it was announced that a large-scale roll-out of the concept was planned, opening up to 300 stores in 5 to 10 years.
The new arm will operate in a two-tier environment, with the majority of sites expected to trade from 2,5003,000 sq ft and some trading from a larger 5,0007,000 sq ft floor plate. A trial of a 'little Waitrose' fascia on smaller floor plate stores may yet lead to brand differentiation of some or all of the convenience estate.

Apparently these were not originally a London thing.
First public police telephones of this type, although red in Britain were introduced in Glasgow in 1891. Gas lanterns were attached to the roof so to signal for instructions. The Metropolitan Police (Met) introduced police boxes throughout London between 1928 and 1937. These boxes were not made of wood as would first seem. The original MacKenzie Trench blueprints indicate that the material for the shell of the box is 'concrete' with only the door being made of teak hardwood.
A little heater was supplied as the boxes would have been notoriously cold. By 1953 there were 685 police boxes on the streets of London. In the late 1960's they were killed by the advent of the walkie-talkie. Some still survive and have been converted into High Street coffee bars. When I am up in Edinburgh I see quite a few, though quite a few are in various states of disrepair. Edinburgh's boxes are often ornate with faux neoclassical decoration.
