Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM98YA - A lively winter dusk street scene outside the Marks & Spencer department store on Market Street in Manchester city centre. The photograph is taken from a low, slightly angled viewpoint that emphasises the building's sweeping curved glass frontage and the large, readable MARKS & SPENCER signage wrapping around the corner. Warm interior lighting spills onto the pavement while the sky holds a deepening blue, creating a classic blue hour contrast between cool outdoor tones and the bright retail glow inside.
In the foreground, dense crowds of shoppers in winter coats stream past the entrance, queue, pause, and regroup, capturing the real feel of Manchester's busiest shopping street at peak footfall. The mix of faces and movement gives the image strong editorial value for stories about city-centre retail, consumer behaviour, seasonal shopping, and the everyday rhythm of the UK high street. The composition also works as a clear location identifier, balancing the recognisable brand frontage with the wider public realm, street lighting, and the bustle of an urban evening.
The scene suits a wide range of uses, from travel and lifestyle coverage of Manchester as a city-break destination, to business and economic pieces on retail performance, footfall, and the continuing role of large department stores in central shopping districts. The winter timing is communicated through the low light, bundled clothing, and the after-work atmosphere, making it a versatile image for headlines and general illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CKYR4E - A late-summer street scene in the Paddington Basin area of West London showing pedestrians walking past a line of bright pink wayfinding signs marked Carnival, directing people towards Notting Hill Carnival. The image was taken in August under strong daylight, clear blue skies and hot, dry weather, conditions typical of a peak UK summer period.
People are dressed in light clothing suitable for warm temperatures, reinforcing the sense of heat and seasonal conditions. The temporary signage highlights how London's public realm and transport-adjacent spaces are adapted each year to manage the movement of large crowds attending one of Europe's largest street festivals.
The photograph illustrates the interaction between urban infrastructure, seasonal weather and major cultural events, and is well suited for editorial use covering topics such as summer festivals, crowd movement, urban planning, transport access, heatwaves, and the logistical impact of large-scale events in London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK14 - The Dominic Cummings scandal, or the Dominic Cummings affair, was a series of events involving the British political strategist Dominic Cummings during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. The events include at least one journey that Cummings, then-chief adviser of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and his family made from London to County Durham after the start of a national lockdown in March 2020 while they were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
Reports of the trip first emerged in May 2020 following investigations by the Daily Mirror and The Guardian. Questions arose about whether the conduct of Cummings and his wife was lawful and appropriate within the framework of government advice and guidance, given that the public were ordered to stay at home, that all non-essential travel was forbidden during the lockdown, and that infected persons had been instructed to self-isolate.
Cummings denied he had broken any rules in a press conference a few days later. Durham Constabulary investigated the trip, concluding there may have been a minor breach, but did not take any further action. The scandal led to criticism from Members of Parliament (MPs) within and outside the ruling Conservative Party, backlash in the media and from the public, and calls for Cummings to be sacked or resign. Prominent politicians in the government, including Johnson, rejected these and expressed support for Cummings. Polling suggested that support for the Conservative Party and confidence in the British government's pandemic response fell as a result of the scandal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFAR - Eleanor Rigby is a statue in Stanley Street, Liverpool, England, designed and made by the entertainer Tommy Steele. It is based on the subject of the Beatles' 1966 song Eleanor Rigby, which is credited to the LennonMcCartney partnership
The statue consists of a bronze figure on a stone bench. The figure is 128 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 96 cm deep. It depicts a seated woman with a handbag on her lap, a shopping bag on her right, and a copy of the Liverpool Echo on her left. Poking from the shopping bag is a milk bottle, and on the newspaper is a sparrow and a piece of bread. The woman is looking down at the sparrow.
Steele included what he described as magical properties in his design, all hidden inside the bronze figure and representing a different facet of life. These were: a four-leaf clover (for good luck), a page from the Bible (for spiritual guidance), football boots (representing sport and fun), a comic book (for comedy and adventure), and a sonnet (for love)
On the wall behind the figure is an inscribed plaque which originally read:
ELEANOR RIGBY
DEDICATED TO
ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE ...
This statue was sculpted and donated to the City of Liverpool
by Tommy Steele as a tribute to the Beatles.
The casting was sponsored by the Liverpool Echo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFFX - Liverpool Central railway station in Liverpool, England, forms a central hub of the Merseyrail network, being on both the Northern Line and the Wirral Line. The station is located underground on two levels, below the site of a former mainline terminus. It is the busiest station in Liverpool, though considerably smaller than Lime Street station, the mainline terminus, and the busiest station to operate solely on the Merseyrail network. The station is the busiest underground station outside London serving 40,000 people daily. The station in passengers per platform is the busiest underground railway station in the United Kingdom at 5,217,547 per platform per annum and laying third in all stations, underground or overground.
Liverpool Central is one of nine stations on the Merseyrail network to incorporate automatic ticket gates. The main concourse is part of a shopping centre, and includes a closed subway link to the former Lewis's department store
Liverpool Central Low Level underground terminal station opened on 11 January 1892, at the end of the Mersey Railway's route, via the Mersey Railway Tunnel from Birkenhead, when the route was extended from James Street station. The Mersey Railway platforms were underground, accessed from stairs within the High Level station and situated in roughly the same position as the escalators accessing the Northern Line today.
The Mersey Railway tunnel entering Central Low Level from the north of the station was aligned with the High Level station's approach tunnel from the south. This was to ensure minimum engineering work if ever the two tunnels were to be linked upas did occur in the 1970s.
The Merseyrail network was created in the 1970s by merging separate railways into one integrated network. Central underground station would service the Northern and Wirral Lines.
A new loop tunnel was built in Liverpool city centre for Wirral Line trains, linking James Street station with Moorfields, Lime Street and Liverpool Central

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AGP - The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, commonly known as Ripon Cathedral, and until 1836 known as Ripon Minster, is a cathedral in Ripon, North Yorkshire, England. Founded as a monastery by monks of the Irish tradition in the 660s, it was refounded as a Benedictine monastery by St Wilfrid in 672. The church became collegiate in the tenth century, and acted as a mother church within the large Diocese of York for the remainder of the Middle Ages. The present church is the fourth, and was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. In 1836 the church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Ripon. In 2014 the Diocese was incorporated into the new Diocese of Leeds, and the church became one of three co-equal cathedrals of the Bishop of Leeds.
The cathedral is notable architecturally for its gothic west front in the Early English style, considered one of the best of its type, as well as the Geometric east window. The seventh-century crypt of Wilfrid's church is a significant example of early Christian architecture in England. The cathedral has Grade I listed building status.
Saint Wilfrid was buried in this church near the high altar. Devastated by the English king Eadred in AD 948 as a warning to the Archbishop of York, only the crypt of Wilfrid's church survived but today this tiny 7th-century chapel rests complete beneath the later grandeur of Archbishop Roger de Pont l'Evêque's 12th century minster. A second minster soon arose at Ripon, but it too perished this time in 1069 at the hands of William the Conqueror. Thomas of Bayeux, first Norman Archbishop of York, then instigated the construction of a third church, traces of which were incorporated into the later chapter house of Roger's minster
The minster finally became a cathedral (the church where the Bishop has his cathedra or throne) in 1836, the focal point of the newly created Anglican Diocese of Ripon the first to be established since the Reformation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5RC - This photograph shows spectators queuing at an entrance to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix, waiting to pass through security screening on a clear and sunny morning. Long lines of fans are guided by temporary metal barriers towards controlled access points, reflecting the scale and organisation required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Security checks at major Formula One events typically include bag inspections and restrictions on items such as alcohol containers and prohibited objects, forming part of wider crowd safety and risk management arrangements. The visible queuing system and open terrain underline the logistical challenges of processing large volumes of people efficiently while maintaining public safety and a positive visitor experience.
The image captures the anticipation and atmosphere of race day, with spectators dressed for warm weather and moving steadily towards the circuit interior. Parked vehicles, fencing, and temporary infrastructure in the background illustrate the extensive operational footprint that surrounds a modern international motorsport event.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph documents crowd behaviour, event security, and spectator management at a major UK sporting venue, highlighting the behind-the-scenes realities that support safe access to large-scale Formula One events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP6H - A blue metal parking sign displaying the crest of the Duchy of Lancaster and the words Reserved Parking. The sign indicates a restricted parking space associated with land or property managed by the Duchy, a historic Crown estate that provides income for the Sovereign in their role as Duke of Lancaster.
The clear, utilitarian design reflects official property management and access control, with the heraldic crest reinforcing the institutional authority behind the restriction. Such signage is commonly found on or near buildings and land connected to Crown or government estates, where parking is limited to authorised users.
Photographed in close-up, the image documents everyday expressions of constitutional and administrative structures within the UK's built environment. It is suitable for illustrating themes of royal estates, public administration, access control, and the subtle presence of historic institutions in contemporary streetscapes.

20 May 202307 Jan 2024
A new major photographic exhibition from Tom Wood, showcasing 50 years of the artist's work.
Walker Art Gallery
'Photie Man' celebrates the internationally-acclaimed Irish artist Tom Wood (b. 1951), showcasing his iconic images of Liverpool and bringing together his work from across all decades, it will be the first major retrospective of Tom's work in Liverpool.
Embraced locally as photieman', Wood has dedicated much of his career to the people and places of Liverpool and Merseyside to create an intimate, diverse and knowing portrait of the city and the surrounding area, and his pioneering photographs capture a definitive phase in the social and political history of the region. He is one of the most influential photographers working today.
Highlights include epic and renowned projects such as Looking for Love' from the Chelsea Reach nightclub in New Brighton, and Wood's widely-praised Bus Series (All Zones Off Peak'). Unseen long-term studies of two major local institutions like Cammell Laird Shipyard feature alongside his images taken around the city's football grounds.
The exhibition will also explore Wood's use of found photographs and landscape photography taken in Ireland and North Wales, alongside never-before seen film work from the artist.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G4 - Passengers at Crewe station now have access to a new waiting room, specifically designed to offer those with hidden disabilities a safe and calm environment.
The Calm Corner is the first of its kind on the rail network. It features the use of grey and green colours in order to give a calming effect, a living wall and plants to complement the colour scheme, specially designed furniture for comfort and relaxation, a child's play table, LED rope lighting that can change brightness to suit all.
It also has screens with old images of Crewe station and town centre to help trigger memories for those suffering from dementia and has a rail point Totem offering helpful advice (EG train and station layout).
It was brought to life through the work of train operators at the station, Network Rail and advice from a number of partner charities.
The idea was first suggested by work experience student, Megan Hughes, who used her own experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome as inspiration for the project.
Passengers using the waiting room can have access to the same support and passenger information they would get elsewhere on the station. However, it will be with the addition of a special totem screen, offering helpful advice such as train times, onward travel information and station layout.
Through ongoing work with Alzheimer's Society, London Northwestern Railway is committed to improving the experience for passengers living with dementia, to help support independent living through the use of the rail network.
The train operator is now working on initiatives to improve staff training as well as implementing small changes at stations that will make a big difference to the experience for passengers.
The memory corner' has been designed to help trigger memories for those who have used Crewe station for many years using a collection of historic photos of the station.
It is hoped this collection can grow, with contributions from passengers, families and other supporters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NFM - Another Place is a piece of modern sculpture by British artist Antony Gormley located at Crosby Beach in Merseyside, England. It consists of 100 cast iron figures facing towards the sea. The figures are modelled on the artist's own naked body.[1] The work proved controversial due to the naked statues but has increased tourism to the beach. After being exhibited at two other locations it was put on display at Crosby on 1 July 2005. After some controversy Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council decided on 7 March 2007 that the sculptures should be permanently installed at the beach
The work consists of cast iron figures which face out to sea, spread over a 2-mile (3.2 km) stretch of beach between Waterloo and Blundellsands. Each figure is 189 centimetres (6 ft 2 in) tall and weighs around 650 kilograms (1,430 lb). The figures are cast replicas of Gormley's own body. As the tides ebb and flow, the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea, and are subject to corrosion by seawater and colonisation by marine animals. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R27BYY - YOUNG people have joined forces with a local artist to transform an underpass in the centre of town.
An underpass between Warrington's bus interchange and the Youth Zone, has had a much-needed makeover thanks to the artist Tim Twist and the youngsters.
Tim helped mastermind the art project, alongside contributions from Warrington Youth Zone, and the youngsters who use the services there.
The mural is designed to reflect key aspects of the town
The mural includes a tribute to Viola Beach, with references to their single 'Swings and Waterslides.'
The artwork shows off the skyline of Warrington, with buildings and sites such as Warrington Wireworks, the Transporter Bridge and the Halliwell Jones Stadium, with a Wolf rising from the ground.
Central supporting columns of the underpass now reflect the cooling towers at Fiddlers Ferry, as well as the Neighbourhood Weekender festival, the Golden Gates and the iconic Pink Eye' building, which will be signed by Anthony Turk who created the original artwork on the building over 20 years ago.
Cllr Tom Jennings, cabinet member for economic development and innovation, said: The artwork has brought about a remarkable improvement to a well-used underpass. I thank Tim Twist and our young people for their talent and efforts over the past few weeks.
This project serves as a testament to the transformative power of art in enhancing our town centre and I'm sure it will instil a further sense of pride in our town's heritage and ownership of our continuing story to all that view it.
Tom Jowett, head of youth work at Warrington Youth Zone, said: Since identifying the site for the youth zone on Dallam Lane our young people identified, they would like to create some artwork on the underpass to make a more warm and welcoming approach to the youth zone and the town centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R27C02 - YOUNG people have joined forces with a local artist to transform an underpass in the centre of town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYKTAA - In the UK, street parties are mainly known as private residents' events without wider neighbourhood publicity and have a festive cultural meaning, especially in England and southern Wales. They have historically been held to commemorate major national events, such as VE Day or for royal events such as jubilees, with bunting dressing the street, and children having fun in the street. An estimated 10 million people took part in street parties in 1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
The tradition seems to have begun in the United Kingdom after World War I as residents' organized peace teas to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
The tradition was boosted for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 with about 1 million people joining in street parties. For the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June 2012 about 2 million took part.
Some street parties are held annually or at any time for residents to meet their neighbours in a traffic-free street in a private street party. Some street parties are public events taking many forms.
An application may need to be made to the local authority to close a road for a street party, who will arrange a temporary traffic regulation order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The council may charge a fee if traffic needs to be diverted

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MX9FPP - Concept image showing Scottish banknotes and coins beside a lit domestic gas hob, illustrating the pressure of rising household energy costs on home budgets in Scotland and across the UK. The photograph links everyday cooking, heating and fuel use with consumer finance, inflation, cost of living pressures, utility bills, and the squeeze on disposable income faced by households during periods of high gas prices. Visible cash and currency emphasise budgeting choices, bill payment worries, and the trade off between essential spending and other family costs such as food, rent, mortgage payments, transport and childcare. The blue gas flame provides an immediate visual shorthand for domestic energy consumption, meter usage, tariff changes, supplier charges and the wider debate about affordability, fuel poverty and energy market volatility. This image is suitable for editorial use on stories about gas bills, household finances, inflation, consumer hardship, personal budgeting, winter heating worries, energy affordability, Scottish consumers, British utility costs, and the continuing impact of higher fuel prices on ordinary homes. It also works as a broader symbol of economic stress, financial resilience, money management, cash flow pressure, and the challenge for low and middle income households trying to balance essential utilities against stagnant wages and wider rising living costs. The Scottish notes make the picture especially useful for regional coverage involving devolved policy, Scottish consumers and the domestic effect of energy pricing. Because the money is shown in physical form rather than on a screen, the image underlines the kitchen table reality of budgeting, where higher utility charges are felt as pounds and pence leaving the household purse. It is well suited to reporting on arrears, debt advice, payment support, winter resilience, fuel poverty, and the real world impact of gas price rises on everyday family finances.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JX9W - Church Street is a street in Liverpool, England, lying between Bold Street to the east and Lord Street to the west. It is the main shopping area of Liverpool and takes its name from St Peter's Church, which was demolished in 1922. The side streets to the north of Church Street lead to Williamson Square, while the Grade I listed Bluecoat Chambersthe oldest surviving building in Liverpoolis to the south along Church Alley. The Liverpool Athenaeum, an institution founded in the 18th century, is also on Church Alley. The area behind the shops on the south side of Church Street is now part of the Liverpool One shopping complex, which opened in October 2008 after the redevelopment of a large part of the L1 postcode area (hence the name).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X28 - This image shows the York waterfront along the River Ouse on a warm summer day, with people seated at riverside tables and benches enjoying food, drink, and sunshine. The river forms a central feature of York's historic landscape and has shaped the city's development for centuries.
The riverside buildings visible along the bank reflect York's long architectural history, with a mix of historic inns, houses, and commercial premises now serving as cafes, pubs, and restaurants. During the summer months, this stretch of the river becomes a focal point for social activity, tourism, and leisure.
The River Ouse flows through the heart of York and remains both an asset and a challenge for the city, celebrated for its scenic value while also associated with seasonal flooding. Images such as this capture the positive, everyday relationship between the city and its river during periods of good weather.
Photographed in bright daylight with clear skies, the image is well suited for editorial use illustrating UK tourism, historic cities, riverside leisure, British summer lifestyle, and urban waterfront regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23RE - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJYM1 - Everyday heroes honoured in Warrington bus station art
A visionary young artist has created a buzz around Warrington with a jaw-dropping display created to celebrate the relationship between the town and its people.
Warrington artist Cameron Brown has transformed Warrington Bus Interchange with a powerfully poignant collection of portraits.
As you are now so once were we is a thought-provoking display of 48 portraits painted onto the glass of the bus station as a touching tribute to the people of Warrington, the impact they have had on their town, and the role our town played in their lives.
Cameron explained: The aim behind the piece was to celebrate the impact that the people of Warrington can have on the town, often without realising, and to recognise the impact that the town can have on us as a collective.
It was an attempt to try and remember the people that came before, appreciate the people that are presently having an effect on the town, and to be aware of the impact we can have on what is still to come.
Taking its name from James Joyce's novel Ullyses, Cameron's work attempts to add a sense of context and belonging to our own individual lives, to encourage people to look back at what has gone before and how they have arrived in the position they find themselves in today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRMW22 - Marmalade is a fruit preserve made from the juice and peel of citrus fruits boiled with sugar and water. The well-known version is made from bitter orange. It is also made from lemons, limes, grapefruits, mandarins, sweet oranges, bergamots, and other citrus fruits, or a combination. Citrus is the most typical choice of fruit for marmalade, though historically the term has often been used for non-citrus preserves.
The preferred citrus fruit for marmalade production is the Spanish Seville or bitter orange, Citrus aurantium var. aurantium, prized for its high pectin content, which sets readily to the thick consistency expected of marmalade. The peel imparts a bitter taste.
The word marmalade is borrowed from the Portuguese marmelada, from marmelo 'quince'.
Unlike jam, a large quantity of water is added to the fruit in a marmalade, the extra liquid being set by the high pectin content of the fruit. In this respect it is like a jelly, but whereas the fruit pulp and peel is strained out of a jelly to give it its characteristic clarity, it is retained in a marmalade
Paddington Bear is known for his liking of marmalade, particularly in sandwiches, and kept it in his briefcase wherever he went

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A8X - The Amhara genocide is an ongoing systematic massacre of ethnic Amhara and Agew people in Ethiopia since 1990. Large-scale killings and grave human rights violations followed the implementation of the ethnic-federalist system in the country. In most of the cases, the mass murders were silent with perpetrators from various ethno-militant groups from Tigray TPLF or TDF, Oromo OLFOLA, which are also known as Sene/Shane Oneg and the Gumuz armed groups. Ethnically motivated attacks against the Amhara have been reported, with mass graves continuously discovered in various locations. Many from the victim side stated that attempts to investigate and to uncovering data expose them to various forms of persecution. However, the results of two consecutive National Census Analyses and a report by the State revealed that over 2 million Amhara could not be traced. The figure reflects the decades-long massacres and enforced disappearances of the Amhara people. From the ongoing nature of the violence, the actual number is expected to be higher

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN6ECW - A new criminal offence to tackle dognapping and crack down on the heart-breaking issue of pet theft has moved a step closer.
Under government plans, people who steal a canine companion could face up to five years in jail if convicted of dog abduction.
The offence is being added to the Kept Animals Bill, which is currently making its way through the Commons, after a recommendation by the government's pet theft taskforce in September.
The taskforce, launched in May, looked into a reported rise in pet thefts during the pandemic. More than 2,000 such incidents were reported to the police in 2020.
Dognapping remains the biggest issue, with around seven in 10 incidents of pet theft recorded by police involving dogs, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The move has been welcomed by leaders from animal rights organisations.
Chief veterinary officer Dr Christine Middlemiss said it is an important step forward with dogs being treated as sentient beings rather than merely property.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108BJ - Erected to commemorate Christ's Hospital School's 350 year presence in the City of London, from 1552 to 1902. The sculpture is designed to curve gently, reflecting the care and support provided to children, who flow from the youngest entering the school to confident adolescents marching boldly into their futures. The back of the sculpture features a verse written about Christ's Hospital by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who was a pupil from 1781 to 1791, along with a copper plate drawing of the Priory buildings at the time the school first occupied the site in 1552. The sculpture gives life to the essence of the school and its charitable mission to educate children in particular need, regardless of means. The famous Tudor uniform and marching depicted in the piece are synonymous with Christ's Hospital today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKPJY - How Wheat Shortage Is Sparking a Global Food Crisis
While climate change heightens competition for the already limited resources, many non-climate stressors are also putting immense pressure on our food system. Recently, all eyes are on the wheat shortage, as experts warn it could spark a global food crisis. The world's wheat supply is under immense pressure as the conflict in Ukraine as well as increasingly devastating weather events threaten production around the world. What sparked the issue and how are countries dealing with the shortage?
Why Is Everyone So Concerned About Wheat?
Following corn and soybeans, wheat is the third most common and widespread crop. As one of the oldest, cheapest, and most versatile grains, it remains today a critical component of food security.
This nutritious grain is essential in ensuring a sustainable global food supply for current and future generations. For centuries, wheat has been a staple ingredient not only in industrialised nations but especially in developing countries. Today, over 80% of the world's wheat is used for flour.
Despite being so widespread around the world, wheat production is in the hands of just a few countries. A staggering 86% of global wheat exports come from only seven countries, while just three of them hold nearly 68% of the world's wheat reserves, with some of the world's most vulnerable and impoverished countries relying on them for more than half of their wheat imports.
wheat shortage
Both Ukraine and Russia are key players in the highly concentrated international wheat market. Described by many as the breadbaskets for much of the world, these two nations alone account for just under 30% of the world's wheat exports. Most of the wheat they produce is sent to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Yemen among the largest importers. In 2020, Russia and Ukraine also contributed 20% to the total food commodities procured by the Wor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7B - Linguaphone is a global language training provider based in London that has provided self-study language courses since 1901.
Methodology
Linguaphone's self-study courses follow Linguaphone's in-house methodology of Listen, Understand, Speak. Students are encouraged to listen to the language from the beginning, to begin to read as they listen, and only to speak once they have learned to understand the language presented.
Linguaphone was established in 1901 by Jacques Roston, a translator and language teacher, born in Poland, (Koło), and they were the first language training company to recognise the potential of combining the traditional written course with the wax cylinder and later with records.
At the height of their popularity, Linguaphone was not only a large, international publishing house with many prestigious representative offices (for books, records, tapes and cassettes) but they also ran fashionable language schools in a number of major cities across the world, such as London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. This chain of Linguaphone Institutes could claim to be the second oldest among the international language teaching establishments (the oldest being Berlitz, founded in 1878 and known today as Berlitz International, with the controversial[why?] Berlitz method) and, as such, Linguaphone had, at one time, the privilege of being an almost automatic first choice among the famous of the day, including royalty.

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 a subtype of influenza type A is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

Hillcrest House, in Walton Road, Stockton Heath, where ukulele playing George once lived with his dad also an entertainer has been refurbished and has become a small business centre run by Warrington-based Purple Accounts.
The house was the Formby family home from 1917 and it was from there that George launched his show business career. It had a brief existence as a boutique hotel, which opened in 2013, when it was also recognised with a blue plaque.
Now it has been comprehensively and sympathetically refurbished by the owner but is still filled with iconic images of Formby, who was at one time credited with being the highest-paid star in UK show business.
There's even a replica of the No 14 motorbike that Formby rode in his 1939 movie No Limits based on the TT races in the Isle of Man where, coincidentally, the first Purple Accounts office opened in 2007.
The new small business centre based at George Formby's House was officially opened by Warrington South MP Andy Carter,
The Purple Accounts small business centre helps small businesses with compliance services such as accounts, tax, book-keeping and payroll
George Formby, OBE (born George Hoy Booth
26 May 1904 6 March 1961) was an English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s. On stage, screen and record he sang light, comic songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele, and became the United Kingdom's highest-paid entertainer.
Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he was the son of George Formby Sr, from whom he later took his stage name. After an early career as a stable boy and jockey, Formby took to the music hall stage after the early death of his father in 1921
The media historian Brian McFarlane writes that on film, Formby portrayed gormless Lancastrian innocents who would win through against some form of villainy, gain

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CB00B3 - By the middle of the 15th century the population of the town had increased to about 1,300 people and, even though travelling was hard, Warrington's markets and fairs were known far and near. The lanes around the market became so crowded with stalls and animals that an open space had to be made in the north west corner of the crossroads. On early maps this was called the forum', and later the corn market'.
The rights to collect tolls on these markets and fairs remained with the barons of Warrington, and later with the lords of the manor, until 1856 when the new corporation bought them from John Ireland Blackburne, the then Lord of the Manor.
The Victorian market
Three years later the Warrington Improvement and Market Act said the corporation could hold and maintain a market, and could also to build on any land purchased under the powers of the Act, or on any land forming part of any street. The buildings were market houses and places for the sale of cattle, hay and other articles.
After much debate a new market hall for meat traders was built in 1856, which was an impressive brick and stone building.
It was extended in 1873, adding a cast iron-framed fish market hall. Later, a glass-roofed general market hall was built on land behind the Barley Mow Inn.
The market in the 1960s-1970s
By the late 1960s, the Victorian market halls had become outdated and they couldn't meet the modern standards of health and hygiene. It was impossible to build a new market around the old without stopping trading for a long time.
When Warrington became a New Town, the town centre was redeveloped and the market was moved to Bank Street, where it would provide a counterbalance to the new Golden Square shopping centre.
The new market was designed on three levels, based on the natural fall of the ground, meaning that each floor came out at ground level. It gave service access to the back of shops on Bridge Street via a tunnel from the basement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02N3 - Grappenhall is a semi-rural village in Cheshire, England, along the Bridgewater Canal in the Grappenhall and Thelwall civil parish, which had a population of 9,377 at the 2001 census. It has a cobbled square, St Wilfs at its centre and the Parr Arms Pub.
St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse. The foundations of this church were discovered during the 187374 restoration.
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel. The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 187374 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4575424384 - 'Liverpool’s Dream was a three-day outdoor performance art event featuring giant marionettes, that took place in Liverpool, England, from 5 to 7 October 2018.
The event attracted more than a million visitors to the city[1] and was, in part, a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008. It was billed as being the last appearance of the giants and the final show of the ‘Giants Trilogy’ after Sea Odyssey and Memories of August 1914.
The performance was designed and performed by Royal de Luxe who are based in Nantes, France. The performance featured four giant marionettes. A little boy and girl giant, an adult giant and Xolo the dog.
The Little Boy Giant first appeared in a performance in Cameroon and was 6 m (20 ft) high and required 27 People to operate. The Giant Man was 10 m (33 ft) high and required 44 operators. The Little Girl Giant appeared in the previous two Liverpool giant events was not originally billed as being part of the performance but was revealed as a surprise on the Sunday afternoon.
Xolo the dog had appeared in the previous two Liverpool Giants performances. The Giants collectively covered a distance of 21 miles (34 km) across Liverpool and, for the first time in such an event across the river Mersey in New Brighton

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGGE7D - The Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht) is a months-long citywide carnival celebration in Mainz, Germany that traditionally begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring.
It is one of the largest carnival events in Germany and, along with the Cologne and Düsseldorfer carnivals, Mainz is one of the three cities prominent in the rhenish carnival tradition. Aside from the celebrations, parades, and jollity which are typical of carnival traditions in many countries, the Mainz carnival has an unusual emphasis on political and literary humor and commentary.
The fountain is vitally important to all real Meenzer (people from Mainz): Every year on 11/11, all people celebrating Carnival in Mainz (fools) gather here when the clock on the balcony of the facing Osteiner Hof (Court of Ostein) strikes 11:11 p.m., which marks the fifth season of Carnival. The carnival is traditionally opened with the announcement of the 11 carnival laws.
The 8.50 metre-high carnival fountain, unveiled in 1967, designed by Blasius Spreng, is a comparatively young monument in Mainz. Nevertheless, you can't imagine it not being in the cityscape. With over 200 figures from carnival and mythology, it is a symbol of typical Mainz joie de vivre

Look a little closer - which figures do you recognise? Father Rhine, the monk and the man with the blockhead, the cat, Till Eulenspiegel and the city goddess, Mogontia, the purse scrubber and the paragraph rider. They are all examples of the variety of fantasy motifs that populate the Carnival fountain.
During the 19th century celebrants began using the carnival as an opportunity to mock the military forces occupying the city's fortress. The uniforms of the carnival guards are still reminders of the uniforms of the Austrian, Prussian, and French troops which were present in the town between 1792 and 1866.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8HWD6 - Bloodhound LSR, formerly Bloodhound SSC, is a British land vehicle designed to travel at supersonic speeds with the intention of setting a new world land speed record. The arrow-shaped car, under development since 2008, is powered by a jet engine and will be fitted with an additional rocket engine. The initial goal is to exceed the current speed record of 763 mph (1,228 km/h), with the vehicle believed to be able to achieve up to 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h).
Driver Andy Green will attempt to break his own record, set in 1997. The previous business behind Project Bloodhound went into administration (bankruptcy) in late 2018. Entrepreneur Ian Warhurst bought the car to keep the project alive. A new company called Grafton LSR Ltd was formed to manage the project, which was renamed Bloodhound LSR and moved to SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College. Lack of funds and the COVID-19 pandemic stalled progress in 2020, and in 2021 the vehicle was offered for sale.
The venue for high speed testing and future world land speed record attempts is the Hakskeen Pan in the Mier area of the Northern Cape, South Africa. An area 12 miles (19 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide was identified as suitable, with the first runs in October 2019. Further runs in November 2019 achieved a top speed of 628 miles per hour (1,011 km/h), the eighth vehicle to attain a land speed of over 600 miles per hour (970 km/h).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6XP - Charing Cross railway station (also known as London Charing Cross)[4] is a central London railway terminus between the Strand and Hungerford Bridge in the City of Westminster. It is the terminus of the South Eastern Main Line to Dover via Ashford. All trains are operated by Southeastern, which provides the majority of commuter and regional services to south-east London and Kent. It is connected to Charing Cross Underground station and is near to Embankment Underground station and Embankment Pier.
The station was originally opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1864. It takes its name from its proximity to the road junction Charing Cross, the notional centre of London from which distances from the city are measured. During the 19th century the station became the main London terminus for continental traffic via boat trains, and served several prestigious international services. It was badly damaged by a roof collapse in 1905 and extensively rebuilt, subsequently becoming an important meeting point for military and government traffic during World War I. By this time, Charing Cross station was seen as out of date by some politicians and proposals were made to replace Hungerford Bridge with a road bridge or road/rail combination, with the station moving to the south bank of the River Thames in the case of a road-only replacement. The station was bombed several times during World War II, and was rebuilt afterwards, re-opening in 1951. In the late 1980s, the station complex was redesigned by Terry Farrell and rebuilt to accommodate a modern office block, now known as Embankment Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHN3 - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth £13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BTR - The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway. It was so called when taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the Glasgow Underground in 1936. Despite this rebranding, many Glaswegians continued to refer to the network as the Subway. In 2003 the name Subway was officially readopted by its operator, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). A £40,000 study examining the feasibility of an expansion into the city's south side is in progress.
The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow
that distinction belongs to a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1863, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a sub-surface tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.
The Subway runs from 06:30 to 23:40 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 18:12 on Sunday.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ68T - Passengers crowd a ScotRail train and platform at Glasgow Central Station, Glasgow G1 3SL, illustrating peak-time congestion and the everyday pressures of rail commuting in Scotland's busiest transport hub. The image shows a dense flow of people boarding and alighting from a modern ScotRail carriage beneath the station's historic iron and glass roof.
Glasgow Central handles some of the highest passenger volumes in the Scottish rail network, serving long-distance intercity services as well as heavily used commuter routes across the Central Belt. During peak periods, platforms and carriages can become severely crowded, reflecting sustained demand for rail travel linked to employment patterns, housing location and urban concentration.
Since ScotRail's return to public ownership in 2022, issues such as capacity, reliability, rolling stock availability and timetable resilience have remained central to political and media debate. Supporters of public control argue that long-term planning and social value should take precedence, while critics highlight ongoing challenges faced by daily commuters, including overcrowding and service disruption.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate discussions around commuter experience, transport investment, public service delivery and the limits of existing rail infrastructure. The visible mix of ages, workwear and shopping bags emphasises the role of rail as an essential, everyday service rather than a discretionary mode of travel.
Photographed at platform level with strong contextual detail, the image carries high editorial value for coverage of commuting pressures, public transport policy, rail reform and the lived experience of passengers in Scotland's urban centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4H5 - Holy Trinity Church, Wood Green, is a Grade II listed Victorian church in Witney, Oxfordshire.
The Church was built in 18489, on land given by the bishop of Winchester and the duke of Marlborough
the cost was met largely from subscriptions, and a gift from the rector Charles Jerram. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey.
The church of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar quoins and dressings and a gabled stone slate roof. There is a two-bay chancel with pointed moulded doorway and Caernarvon-arched window. The five-bay nave has offset buttresses, lancets and two-light windows in each east bay.
An organ was installed in 1860, and new choir stalls and altar rails were fitted in 1869. In 1887 the vestry was enlarged to designs by Clapton Crabb Rolfe, and in 1895 an organ by Charles Martin of Oxford replaced the earlier one.
A new pulpit was fitted in 1909 in memory of Samuel and Mary Shuffrey. It was created in the Wood Green workshop of their son Leonard Shuffrey, the leading architect and architectural designer, who is buried in the Churchyard. James Allen Shuffrey, the notable watercolour artist, and brother of Leonard Shuffrey, sang in Wood Green Church Choir as a boy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1FR - A signalman or signaller is an employee of a railway transport network who operates the points and signals from a signal box in order to control the movement of trains.
Contents
The first signalmen, originally called Railway Policemen (leading to the nickname of 'Bobby'), were employed in the early 19th century and used flags to communicate with each other and train drivers, and hourglasses for the purpose of Time Interval Working between stations.
Additional duties
It was a signalman's duty to check each train that passed their signal box, looking for the red tail lamp exhibited on the trailing vehicle, the sighting of which confirmed that the train was still complete, and thus the section was clear.
Each train movement was logged, by hand, in a Train Register Book, and it was normal practice to provide a special desk to support this sizeable book. As well as train movements, every communication between signalmen and adjacent signal boxes via bell codes (when accepting trains or dealing with a token) was logged.
Technological advances including mechanical fixed signals in the 1840s, the electric telegraph and block working in the 1850s, and proper mechanical interlocking from 1856, allowed safer, more expeditious train working, and more complicated track layouts to be controlled single-handedly. The advent of such technological advances gradually led to the provision of an enclosed workspace known as a signal box, signal cabin or interlocking tower.
The principles of British-style railway signalling have changed little since the Victorian era and early 20th century. Modern technology has generally reduced the labour required per train movement. In many cases, a switch, button or computer command is used to alter the lie of points and control signals. Although many classic mechanical signal boxes remain in use, these are gradually being replaced by modern power signalling systems on most railways. The heartlands of British-style railway signalling could be said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K43PYW - Love Hearts are a type of confectionery manufactured by Swizzels Matlow in the United Kingdom. They are hard, tablet-shaped sweets in various fruit flavors featuring a short, love-related message on one side of the sweet. They are an updated version of Victorian-era Conversation Lozenges
On chewing, the sweet quickly disintegrates into a powdery, starchy consistency
Love Hearts currently come in six flavors, each associated with a color (listed from weakest to strongest flavor):..
White (a plain, sherbet-like, slightly tart vanilla flavor)
Yellow (a sherbet-like flavor with a distinct sharp lemon aftertaste)
Green (a slight lime flavor with a sherbet-like aftertaste)
Orange (a sweet flavor with a slight orange aftertaste)
Purple (an unusual, slightly perfumed berry-like flavor with a strong aftertaste)
Red (cherry flavor)
There are many different messages which can be found on the front of the sweet, most of which are love-related. The message is written in capitals in a sans serif font of varying size. The font is scaled and sometimes stretched out of proportion to fit the available space.
Most messages are written in simple horizontal, centrally aligned lines. There are some exceptions to this rule, including the phrase I Surrender, where the word surrender has been written in an arc around the lower inside edge of the heart outline.
The Just Say No message has an unclear layout, appearing to read Just say No.
Wayne and Coleen Rooney had personalized sweets made for their wedding in the summer of 2008 which read Wayne and Coleen. Special edition Love heart packs were launched for Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011

New York based DJ Andy Butler (assisted by Kim Ann Foxman) is behind 'Hercules &
Love Affair'. This single 'Blind' featuring guest Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony &
The Johnsons) and was released March 2008.
Andrew Butler, began his musical career at 15, DJing in a Denver leather bar run by a hostess called Chocolate Thunder Pussy. He then moved to Brooklyn, in order to attend Sarah Lawrence College. According to Butler: 'I’ve been writing songs since childhood. I made music for dance performances in college (where he studied under Corky St. Clair), like a remake of Gino Soccio’s ‘Runaway’ done in the style of Kraftwerk.
I am so glad thats cleared up then!
A new album is apparently immenent, which explains why I have been playing this track recently.
Almost made me go out and buy a triangle, that lead out.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) was founded by Thomas Rhodes Armitage, a successful doctor who suffered from eyesight problems.
In 1868 Dr Armitage founded an organisation known as the British and Foreign Society for Improving Embossed Literature for the Blind. This later became the British and Foreign Blind Association. In 1875 Her Majesty Queen Victoria became the organisation's first patron.
The organisation received a Royal Charter in 1948, and changed its name to Royal National Institute for the Blind in 1953. RNIB's vision is of a world in which blind and partially sighted people enjoy the same rights, freedom, responsibilities and quality of life as people who are fully sighted.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4704019146 - 'The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England was started in 1903. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles south west of Bristol in the seaside town.
It is supported in true victorian fashion by 600 iron piles, and is 400 metres long. Unfortunatly it has form where fire is concerned. It has been damaged by fire on two occasions in 1930 and 2008.
At 01:35 on the 28 July 2008, a fire at the foot of the north tower on the shoreward (eastern) end of the pavilion triggered the privately monitored fire alarm. The Essex-based alarm monitoring company were unable to contact the key-holder by mobile phone and no further action was taken.
It was not until 06:46 that the Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AFRS) was notified, by this time a hefty blaze was under way. It deployed 13 fire engines, special appliances, and more than 85 firefighters to tackle the blaze, but the building was soon destroyed.
Robert Tinker, a Grand Pier employee, was later praised by the fire service as he braved the extreme intensity of the heat from the flames to rush around the side of the building to remove several gas canisters which had been stored within the premises, had these not been removed the AFRS claim that the fire could have been much worse and with the possibility of needing evacuation of local residents and traders.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire started due to a number of deep fat fryers which had been located within the area pavilion, however after further investigation this was later ruled out, as was arson. On 22 October a news conference was held by AFRS who announced that despite their efforts the cause of the fire would be recorded as unknown, but that the most likely cause was an electrical fire.
Workmen began dismantling the wreckage on 12th September and a design competition for the new pavilion was won by the Bristol-based Angus Meek Architects' on 15th October. On 7th December it was announced that a slowly rotating 91 metres (299 ft) tall observation tower was proposed along with the new building.
On 12 March 2009, North Somerset Council approved the plans, which are to cost £34 million. The new pavilion is expected to open in the summer of 2010. On 5 August 2009 it was announced that contractors John Sisk &
Son Ltd had been selected to construct the new pavilion and it was hoped that it would be completed by July 2010. These lads are working on the project. Jeff Bonvallet is at the far right.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4660949290 - 'West Kirby contains a large man made coastal lake, the 'Marine Lake'. The structure is large enough to hold sailing events. Swimming is discouraged due to the presence of weaver fish with sharp poisonous barbs. Some of the creatures can be caught by a piece of meat on a cord. I remember yonks ago catching crabs off Cromer pier in Norfolk. If you were lucky then, you got two or three all fighting for a cube of pork! Happy days.
West Kirby is a town on the north-west corner of the coast of the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside, England, at the mouth of the River Dee across from the Point of Ayr in North Wales.
The name West Kirby is of Viking origin, originally Kirkjubyr, meaning 'village with a church'. The form with the modifier 'West' exists to distinguish it from the other town of the same name in Wirral: Kirkby-in-Walea (now the modern town of Wallasey). The earliest usage given of this form is 'West Kyrkeby in Wirhale' in 1285.
On the lake most days and it must be said in all weathers, you can see windsurfing and many more water related activities including: canoeing
kayaking
and occasional power-boating. In early 2009 it was reported that the lake had undergone structural damage, most likely due to estuarine erosion. Since this report a £750K refurbishment has taken place to help restore the lake, and is now back to holding water sport activities.
In October 1991 the World Windsurfing Speed Record was set on the West Kirby Marine Lake at 42.16 knots. It was held for two years until it was beaten in Australia.
Notable locals from West Kirby include Daniel Craig, the actor who played James Bond in the 2006 version of Casino Royale, who attended Hilbre High School and Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby. Glenda Jackson, actress and politician, attended West Kirby Grammar School.

Its got to be the mascot up at Cheshire's top hand car wash Garnett. They are a really friendly team down there and do a cracking job. I can recommend them.
Look out for the mascot which will be around town from now and into the summer to promote the business that covers cars, valets, drives and conservatories from their base at Old Warrington road, Northwich and out at Tatton adjacent to the Little Chef on the A556. They also clean Fascias, Caravans and even done the odd Tractor believe it or not. Handy as they are insured with NFU (originally the farmers mutual).
Back in December, the local council, Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), took offence at the companies distinctive green and yellow A-Boards. I am unsure if it was the colour or size that was the nature of the complaint. If it was that they were prominent, isn't that the point? I have still noticed plenty of A-Boards around town. To be consistant shouldn't they all be banned?
Shirley Wingfield, a spokesman for CWAC, was reported in the Northwich Guardian as saying “We do not regard what Mr Garnett was advertising on as A-boards, we regard it as fly posting. “We act when incidents are reported to us and people are asked not to do it again. If they persist they are issued with a fixed penalty notice.”
Personally I thought I thought I had a good idea what a fly posting was, but maybe not!

What a difference five days make eh?
A lot of people mistakenly regard the Liberals as the new kids on the block these days, while in reality at core they were the old guard with the Tories back in the late victorian era. When the left wing Labour party arrived, quite soon ping pong between Tory and Labour administrations have ensued.
While many councils are liberal led, however the first past the post system is an unfortunate barrier to seeing a majority liberal party prime minister at Westminster. One which the two main parties may be reluctant to dismantle if a hung parliament results tonight and Nick Clegg assumes his role as 'Kingmaker'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4578869286 - 'Bob is the handy man at the Blakemere Craft Centre, Sandiway Cheshire. I spotted his lovely beard and got chatting to him. He has had his face fungus now for well over 20 years. On one occasion when he had it shaved off at the barbers he was so unrecognisable that his next door neighbour thought he was a burgler, who had climbed into the back garden! He was simply unrecognisable!
Bob does alsorts around the centre which has now grown into quite a multi-faceted complex. There is even a working Brewery making traditionally crafted cask ales on the site. Yep I do have a nose for that kind of stuff!
In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom and knowledge, sexual virility, masculinity, or high social status
and, conversely, filthiness, crudeness, or an eccentric disposition. In many cultures, beards are associated with nature and outdoorsmen. I remember in my mis-spent youth enjoying the band ZZ Top, strangely the only member of the band without a beard is in fact called Frank Beard (credited as Rube Beard on early LP's). However it must be said that he did in fact sport some facial hair, generally only a trimmed mustache.
In 1984, the Gillette Company (one of the worlds largest razor manufacturers) reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill (the bearded members of ZZ Top) $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial. They allegedly declined, saying 'We're too ugly without 'em'. Apparently the name came from blues guitar master B. B. King. The band had planned to call themselves ZZ. King, but felt it was too similar. Since B.B. King was at the 'top', they settled on ZZ Top.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4574527758 - 'Lucky Pete outside his traditional british chippy at 4 Winnington Lane, Northwich, Cheshire. I have had a few chip suppers from Petes when photographing gigs and bands just down the road at the w=33062170@N08\'>Winnington Park Rec'. I can recommend his fish in cajun spiced batter, just have some lager at the ready! His sign states 'Simply The Best Chippy In Winnington'. That cannot be denied as he has the 'only' chippy in Winnington, however he does do top chips!
Fish and chips, often referred to as national takeaway food of these islands originated in the victorian era. It is pretty much everywhere and even in rural areas, like Cornwall or Mull, it often arrives by mobile van in the evening. Around 1860, it is legend that the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Jewish proprietor Joseph Malin who married together 'fish fried in the Jewish fashion' with thick chiped potatoes. In 1863 the chip shop reached Manchester, when a Mr Lees opened a shop in Mossley. Interestingly, throughout world war II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Salt and vinegar (spirit preferred) or gravy usually goes with it.
Across britain, fish and chip shops offer a varied menu. Pete covers the usual staples
mushy peas, Dinaclass curry sauce, sausages, heated (but not fried) pies and suit puddings, gravy, fried chicken. Further north you can expect scallops (wide slices of potato in batter), deep fried Mars bars, deep fried pizza and haggis are popular in Scotland. In Edinburgh you would most likely buy a 'supper' with 'Salt n sauce' (watered down brown sauce - 'sottensauce'). In many places you can buy a whole picked egg or individual pickled onions too. In east Anglia and the south east fish roes or rock salmon can often be found.
Most places use vegatable oil these days, but a few proudly fry in lard (and generally have a sign outside shouting the fact). Waste frying oil is sometimes nowadays used to make bio-diesel. Older diesel cars can often run on it without modification. I would not try it in a HDI style engine though!
As a kid I remember the local chippy doing fizzy minerals too. Ben Shaws from Huddesfield with 2p back on the bottle, which was returned. Collect enough of those to take back and you had enough for a bag of chips with batter bits (and pea-wet if you couldn't afford a proper portion of green mushy peas). You always got it in newspaper too, that was before the possible perils of printers ink were legislated for. Still the terrible names are still there
Codfellas, FryDays, 'Good Buy Mr Chips', 'The Fryery' , 'The Codfather', 'The Frying Scotsman' and the classic 'Assault and Battery'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4565205208 - 'Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials. It was aquired by Ford in 1989 and is now part of the indian Tata steel and manufacturing group.
Jaguar cars are designed in Jaguar Land Rover's engineering centres at the Whitley plant in Coventry and at Gaydon in Warwickshire, and are manufactured in two of Jaguar Land Rover's plants
Castle Bromwich assembly plant in Birmingham and at the old Ford Halewood Body &
Assembly near Liverpool.
Two of the proudest moments in Jaguar's long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race, firstly in 1956 and again in 1957, in the hands of the little known Scottish racing team called Ecurie Ecosse whose name later went down in legendary status for twice pulling off a David v Goliath effort in the famed car killing race.
The Jaguar XF is marketted a mid-size executive car that was introduced in 2008 to replace the out-going S-Type in the company's line-up. In January 2008, the XF was awarded the What Car? 'Car of the Year' and 'Executive Car of the Year' awards. The XF was also awarded Car of the Year 2008 from What Diesel? magazine.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4562669870 - 'Here is Kev, fastest milkman in the (Cheshire) West (and Chester).
Rarer than the proverbial rocking horse exhaust, the British milkman is becoming an endangered species. I fear the WWF (that’s the wildlife lot, not Hulk Hogans lot obviously!) will be listing Kev and his colleagues quite soon!
Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since poor refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The spread of the humble fridge and the aggressive discounting of supermarkets now mean that we tend to buy milk with the weekly shop and often in long lasting UHT form. Milk delivery also incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify. It also leaves delivered milk in a position where it is often prone to theft.
Kev here is in his electric milk float. Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour, although legend has it that some have been chipped to do up to 80 mph Operators. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night when diary products can be stealthily delivered.
In August 1967 the UK Electric Vehicle Association stated that Britain had more battery-electric vehicles on its roads than the rest of the world put together. On closer inspection these were in fact milk floats. Quite often their enormous batteries are charged all night in order to do a few hours of deliveries the following morning.
So, from an age when we were asked 'Are you getting enough (milk that is)?', we had 'Confessions of a milkman' and 1960's milk bars, Anthony Burgess his droogs and the Korova, our dominance of electric transport is also ebbing away.
Think on next time you reach for a couple of bricks of UHT in the Tesco Express.

The Glock is a series of semi-automatic pistols designed and produced by Glock GmbH, located in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. Glock commands over 65% of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies.
The Glock 17 became a standard NATO-classified sidearm and was granted a NATO Stock Number 1005/25/133/6775.
The Glock 17 is a 9mm short recoil-operated locked breech semi-automatic pistol that uses a modified Browning cam-lock system adapted from the Hi-Power pistol. The firearm's locking mechanism utilizes a linkless, vertically tilting barrel with a rectangular breech that locks into the ejection port cut-out in the slide. During the recoil stroke, the barrel moves rearward initially locked together with the slide approximately 3 mm (0.12 in) until the bullet leaves the barrel and chamber pressure drops to a safe level. Thus care must be taken to keep your lower thumb of the hand clear when using the pistol. Otherwise your skin can aquire a tasty rip or bruise.

I have been a regular customer of Ron (of Ron Snax, Outside catering available 01827-706191) for some time. The mis-spelt pricelist notwithstanding (Turkcy), he does a cracking job. £2.40 buys you a bagette the size of two fists, packed with fried goodness. My only gripe is that he doesn't do black pudding, but that has never stopped me calling there. His litre of steaming tea or coffee also blows Costa away.
Rons does barms and soft bagettes. It always amazes me how short a distance you need to travel, for bread names to change so dramatically. It could be a bread-cake, teacake (obviously without fruit), a sub, barm, breadbun, cob, stotty, scone, buttery, flour cake or muffin. Using the wrong one can lead to a lot of confusion. Any more bread styles you know from across Britain, please leave a comment and let me know.
The old 'Greasy Spoon' in my opinion gets an unfair press. Wikipedia defines it as:
'Greasy spoon is a colloquial or slang term used in Britain, Ireland and North America for small, especially cheap, archetypal working class restaurants or diners. The name 'greasy spoon' is used to imply a less-than-rigorous approach to hygiene and dishwashing, and appears in use in the early 20th century'.
There have been a few stories, mainly hoaxes based on ficticious EU reports about eating habits of long distance drivers and their health. As any truck driver knows, the greatest hazard is infact 'Truck drivers testicle' caused by vibrations encountered over time from sitting over the tractor unit engine.
Thankfully, Rons position appears safe, although he did tell me that a new rating system is apparently coming in. So look out for his star rating, next time you are on the A46. Tell him HotpixUK sent you!

Clive has worked a good proportion of his life with AEC coaches and has a couple used just to cannibalise parts in order to keep the two pride and joy in preservation style. They are named Lord Clive and lady Sarah.

Usually containing only strong tobacco, the traditional waterpipe has many names in the near east: Hukkah, shisha, nargeeleh, nargile, nargilen or argeelah.
The pipe appears to have originated in India. Initially in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar (around 1542 ). Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani came from Baghdad to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'.
This new pipe for smoking soon became a status symbol for the Indian aristocracy and gentry. These days the Hookah west of Cyprus and east of Thailand is ubiquitous.

Their deaths provoked widespread condemnation of the organisation responsible. The blast followed a failed bomb attack a few weeks earlier on a gas storage plant in Warrington.
Tim Parry's father Colin Parry founded The Peace Centre (formerly the Tim Parry Jonathan Ball Peace Centre) as part of a campaign to reconcile communities in conflict. The centre opened on the seventh anniversary of the bombing in 2000.
