Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM98YA - A lively winter dusk street scene outside the Marks & Spencer department store on Market Street in Manchester city centre. The photograph is taken from a low, slightly angled viewpoint that emphasises the building's sweeping curved glass frontage and the large, readable MARKS & SPENCER signage wrapping around the corner. Warm interior lighting spills onto the pavement while the sky holds a deepening blue, creating a classic blue hour contrast between cool outdoor tones and the bright retail glow inside.
In the foreground, dense crowds of shoppers in winter coats stream past the entrance, queue, pause, and regroup, capturing the real feel of Manchester's busiest shopping street at peak footfall. The mix of faces and movement gives the image strong editorial value for stories about city-centre retail, consumer behaviour, seasonal shopping, and the everyday rhythm of the UK high street. The composition also works as a clear location identifier, balancing the recognisable brand frontage with the wider public realm, street lighting, and the bustle of an urban evening.
The scene suits a wide range of uses, from travel and lifestyle coverage of Manchester as a city-break destination, to business and economic pieces on retail performance, footfall, and the continuing role of large department stores in central shopping districts. The winter timing is communicated through the low light, bundled clothing, and the after-work atmosphere, making it a versatile image for headlines and general illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T2843N - Holy Trinity Church lies on Boar Lane in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in the Parish of Leeds St George in the Diocese of Leeds. It was built in 1722?7, though its steeple dates from 1839. Holy Trinity is in the evangelical church tradition of the Church of England.
History and architecture
A 1714 proposal that a new church should be erected in central Leeds foundered for lack of subscribers, but, in 1722, Lady Elizabeth Hastings of Ledston, backed by leading merchants, revived the project, and the foundation stone of Holy Trinity was laid on 27 August 1722.
The architect of the church was for some time believed to be William Halfpenny. However, it has subsequently been discovered that his designs for the church, for which he was paid ?1 11s 6d on 8 May 1723, were never executed, and that the architect was William Etty of York. A letter from William Cookson to Ralph Thoresby dated 15 May 1723, enclosed a draught, the south front of our new church
it was drawn by Mr. Etty of York, who has also made us a wooden modell for our workmen to go by. Etty had been paid nineteen guineas in April of the same year for the model, which survived into the nineteenth century.
The west tower in Halfpenny's design was topped by a square, open colonnade with an obelisk-shaped spire. Etty did not envisage a spire, but a wooden one was later added by an unknown hand. Thomas Dunham Whitaker, Vicar of Whalley, Lancashire, in his Loidis and Elmete (1816), remarked of this spire: unquestionably one instance among many of private interference, by which the better judgment of real architects is often overruled, and for which they are unjustly considered as responsible. When the spire blew down in 1839, it was replaced by a taller stone steeple of three diminishing stages (architect: Robert Dennis Chantrell).
In 2020 a major refurbishment of the building was completed and will soon be home to a midweek ministry for city centre

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXY - Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett GBE (n??e Garrett
11 June 1847 ? 5 August 1929) was an English politician, writer and activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage by legal change and in 1897?1919 led Britain's largest women's rights association, the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS),[1] explaining, I cannot say I became a suffragist. I always was one, from the time I was old enough to think at all about the principles of Representative Government. She tried to broaden women's chances of higher education, as a governor of Bedford College, London (now Royal Holloway) and co-founding Newnham College, Cambridge in 1875. In 2018, a century after the Representation of the People Act, she was the first woman honoured by a statue in Parliament Square in 2018 by Gillian Wearing. Following a campaign and petition by the activist Caroline Criado Perez, the statue's creation was endorsed by both the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The statue, Parliament Square's first monument to a woman and also its first sculpture by a woman, was funded through the government's Centenary Fund, which marks 100 years since some women won the right to vote. The memorial was unveiled on 24 April 2018
Fawcett was born on 11 June 1847 in Aldeburgh, to Newson Garrett (1812?1893), a businessman from nearby Leiston, and his London wife Louisa (n??e Dunnell, 1813?1903). She was the eighth of their ten children

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFFX - Liverpool Central railway station in Liverpool, England, forms a central hub of the Merseyrail network, being on both the Northern Line and the Wirral Line. The station is located underground on two levels, below the site of a former mainline terminus. It is the busiest station in Liverpool, though considerably smaller than Lime Street station, the mainline terminus, and the busiest station to operate solely on the Merseyrail network. The station is the busiest underground station outside London serving 40,000 people daily. The station in passengers per platform is the busiest underground railway station in the United Kingdom at 5,217,547 per platform per annum and laying third in all stations, underground or overground.
Liverpool Central is one of nine stations on the Merseyrail network to incorporate automatic ticket gates. The main concourse is part of a shopping centre, and includes a closed subway link to the former Lewis's department store
Liverpool Central Low Level underground terminal station opened on 11 January 1892, at the end of the Mersey Railway's route, via the Mersey Railway Tunnel from Birkenhead, when the route was extended from James Street station. The Mersey Railway platforms were underground, accessed from stairs within the High Level station and situated in roughly the same position as the escalators accessing the Northern Line today.
The Mersey Railway tunnel entering Central Low Level from the north of the station was aligned with the High Level station's approach tunnel from the south. This was to ensure minimum engineering work if ever the two tunnels were to be linked up?as did occur in the 1970s.
The Merseyrail network was created in the 1970s by merging separate railways into one integrated network. Central underground station would service the Northern and Wirral Lines.
A new loop tunnel was built in Liverpool city centre for Wirral Line trains, linking James Street station with Moorfields, Lime Street and Liverpool Central

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CM - This photograph shows the BBC Cymru Wales headquarters building at Central Square in Cardiff city centre, home to the national broadcaster for Wales. The modern structure features a combination of pale stone cladding and large vertical glass panels, with prominent BBC Cymru Wales signage clearly visible on the upper facade. The building forms a key part of Cardiff's Central Square regeneration area, adjacent to Cardiff Central railway station.
The image was taken after rainfall, with wet road surfaces and pavements creating reflective textures across the foreground. Traffic lights glow against the damp streets, while a small number of pedestrians move through the scene, dressed for cool, unsettled weather. The sky is overcast with patches of lighter cloud, suggesting changeable conditions typical of the Welsh climate.
BBC Cymru Wales operates television, radio, and digital services in both Welsh and English, and the Central Square development represents a significant investment in modern broadcasting infrastructure and urban renewal. The surrounding streetscape, street furniture, and planting reinforce the contemporary civic character of the area.
The photograph captures both the architectural presence of a major public service broadcaster and the everyday atmosphere of a working city following rain, blending modern media infrastructure with the rhythms of urban life in Cardiff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PT - This photograph shows a tractor-pulled trailer transporting spectators from the Silverstone Woodlands camping area towards the main entrance gates of Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix weekend. The improvised shuttle service provides a practical alternative to long walks across the expansive site, particularly valuable during busy arrival and departure periods.
The use of agricultural tractors and covered trailers reflects the rural setting of Silverstone and the temporary infrastructure required to support one of the UK's largest annual sporting events. Such transport solutions are common during major race weekends, helping manage pedestrian flow, improve accessibility, and reduce fatigue for campers carrying bags and supplies.
Passengers are seen boarding and disembarking in casual summer clothing under clear blue skies, reinforcing the relaxed, festival-style atmosphere that now surrounds modern Formula One events. The scene highlights the blend of countryside practicality and international motorsport spectacle that characterises the British Grand Prix.
Well suited for editorial use, this image documents event logistics, spectator experience, and the behind-the-scenes transport arrangements that enable large numbers of fans to move efficiently between camping areas and circuit facilities at Silverstone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PW - This photograph shows large numbers of Formula One fans gathered in tightly packed queues at entrance gates to Silverstone Circuit, having walked in from surrounding car parking areas during the British Grand Prix weekend. The image captures the scale of attendance and the steady, patient movement of spectators as they wait to be processed through ticket and security checks.
The crowd is diverse in age and dress, with many fans carrying backpacks, drinks, and personal items for a full day at the circuit. Bright summer sunshine and clear blue skies reinforce the seasonal nature of the event and the festival-like atmosphere that surrounds the British Grand Prix, one of the UK's most popular annual sporting occasions.
Such scenes highlight the logistical challenge of managing tens of thousands of arrivals within short time windows, where crowd density, pedestrian flow, and safety must be carefully controlled. The image documents the behind-the-scenes reality of large-scale motorsport events, where arrival routes from car parks, queuing systems, and stewarding play a critical role in maintaining order and public safety.
Well suited for editorial use, this photograph illustrates crowd behaviour, event access planning, and the lived experience of attending Formula One at Silverstone, capturing both the anticipation and the practical realities faced by spectators before they reach the track.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PY - This photograph shows heavy congestion and long queues at an entrance gate to Silverstone Circuit during the Formula One British Grand Prix. Large numbers of spectators are held within temporary metal barriers as they wait to pass through controlled access points, illustrating the crowd density and operational pressures typical of peak arrival periods at major international sporting events.
The image captures a moment where pedestrian flow slows and compresses, emphasising the importance of effective crowd management, stewarding, and clear communication to maintain safety and prevent frustration. Bright summer weather and casual clothing underline the scale of attendance, while the tightly packed queues reflect the popularity of the British Grand Prix and the challenges of processing tens of thousands of visitors within limited time windows.
Entrance congestion of this kind highlights the logistical complexity of Formula One events, where security screening, ticket checks, and safety controls must balance speed with duty of care. The photograph provides strong documentary context for discussions around event planning, access design, and public safety at large UK sporting venues.
Well suited for editorial use, this image illustrates crowd behaviour, access bottlenecks, and the realities of managing spectator entry at one of the world's most famous motorsport circuits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PR - This image shows winners of a charity auction posing with illustrated pub signs from The Petrol Head, a themed pop-up pub at Silverstone Woodlands camping during the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.
The Petrol Head pub formed part of the temporary festival-style facilities provided for F1 fans staying at the Woodlands campsite near Silverstone Circuit.
As part of the event, a selection of bespoke, illustrated pub signs created specifically for the pop-up venue were auctioned to raise money for charity.
The auction took place during the race weekend, with all proceeds from the sale of the signs donated to charitable causes supported by the organisers.
Such charity auctions are a regular feature of large UK motorsport camping events, combining memorabilia, fan engagement, and fundraising in an informal social setting.
The two winning bidders are shown holding their purchased signs immediately after the auction, marking both the fundraising success and the temporary nature of the installation.
The event highlights how major sporting weekends such as the British Grand Prix often include community-focused fundraising activities alongside entertainment and hospitality.
While the pub itself existed only for the duration of the F1 weekend, the auctioned signs became lasting keepsakes linked to a specific moment in the 2023 British Grand Prix.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP6H - A blue metal parking sign displaying the crest of the Duchy of Lancaster and the words Reserved Parking. The sign indicates a restricted parking space associated with land or property managed by the Duchy, a historic Crown estate that provides income for the Sovereign in their role as Duke of Lancaster.
The clear, utilitarian design reflects official property management and access control, with the heraldic crest reinforcing the institutional authority behind the restriction. Such signage is commonly found on or near buildings and land connected to Crown or government estates, where parking is limited to authorised users.
Photographed in close-up, the image documents everyday expressions of constitutional and administrative structures within the UK's built environment. It is suitable for illustrating themes of royal estates, public administration, access control, and the subtle presence of historic institutions in contemporary streetscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A3WE - This image shows a wide, panoramic view within Highgate Cemetery in North London, with visitors seated beside historic graves along a gently curving path. Stone crosses and memorial monuments line the edge of the walkway, while mature trees and dense greenery frame the scene, reinforcing the cemetery's distinctive woodland character.
Highgate Cemetery is notable not only as a Victorian burial ground but also as a valued green space where remembrance, history, and everyday life intersect. The presence of people sitting quietly together reflects the cemetery's contemporary role as a place for reflection, conversation, and calm, as well as mourning.
The contrast between living visitors and historic memorials highlights the layered nature of the site, where nineteenth-century funerary art coexists with modern use. This balance between preservation and accessibility has helped shape Highgate's reputation as both a heritage landmark and a peaceful urban retreat.
Photographed in soft daylight, the image captures the relaxed, contemplative atmosphere that distinguishes Highgate Cemetery from more formal burial grounds. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating London green spaces, cemetery culture, heritage landscapes, and the human relationship with historic places of remembrance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R27C02 - YOUNG people have joined forces with a local artist to transform an underpass in the centre of town.
An underpass between Warrington's bus interchange and the Youth Zone, has had a much-needed makeover thanks to the artist Tim Twist and the youngsters.
Tim helped mastermind the art project, alongside contributions from Warrington Youth Zone, and the youngsters who use the services there.
The mural is designed to reflect key aspects of the town
The mural includes a tribute to Viola Beach, with references to their single 'Swings and Waterslides.'
The artwork shows off the skyline of Warrington, with buildings and sites such as Warrington Wireworks, the Transporter Bridge and the Halliwell Jones Stadium, with a Wolf rising from the ground.
Central supporting columns of the underpass now reflect the cooling towers at Fiddlers Ferry, as well as the Neighbourhood Weekender festival, the Golden Gates and the iconic ?Pink Eye' building, which will be signed by Anthony Turk who created the original artwork on the building over 20 years ago.
Cllr Tom Jennings, cabinet member for economic development and innovation, said: The artwork has brought about a remarkable improvement to a well-used underpass. I thank Tim Twist and our young people for their talent and efforts over the past few weeks.
This project serves as a testament to the transformative power of art in enhancing our town centre and I'm sure it will instil a further sense of pride in our town's heritage and ownership of our continuing story to all that view it.
Tom Jowett, head of youth work at Warrington Youth Zone, said: Since identifying the site for the youth zone on Dallam Lane our young people identified, they would like to create some artwork on the underpass to make a more warm and welcoming approach to the youth zone and the town centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNK2 - This image shows the exterior of Warrington Youth Zone, located on Dallam Lane in Warrington, Cheshire (postcode WA2 7NG). The large, purpose-built facility is designed as a modern youth centre providing safe, supportive spaces and activities for young people from across the town.
Warrington Youth Zone forms part of the national OnSide Youth Zones network, which works in partnership with local authorities, businesses, and charities to deliver affordable access to sports, creative arts, mentoring, and wellbeing services. Buildings of this type are often highly visible, architecturally bold, and positioned as symbols of community investment and regeneration.
The colourful cladding and contemporary design distinguish the building from surrounding urban fabric, reflecting its role as a welcoming and aspirational space for young people. The setting within a redeveloping area of Warrington highlights broader efforts to address youth provision, social inclusion, and community resilience.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding roads and vehicles visible, the image is well suited to editorial use covering youth services, community infrastructure, regeneration projects, charitable organisations, modern civic architecture, and social policy in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4P - This image shows The Kings Arms, a well-known traditional public house located beside the River Ouse in the historic centre of York. The pub is a familiar landmark on King's Staith and is popular with both residents and visitors, particularly during warm summer weather when outdoor seating is in use.
The Kings Arms occupies a characterful historic building and is closely associated with riverside life in York. Its proximity to the river means it is also known for periodic flooding, an issue that has become part of its local identity and media profile over the years.
In this scene, people are gathered outside the pub enjoying drinks and conversation under clear blue skies, reflecting the social role of English pubs as informal community meeting places. The visible pub sign reinforces its identity as a long-established and recognisable venue within the city.
With York's historic riverside architecture and pedestrian activity in the background, the image captures everyday leisure and tourism in one of England's most visited historic cities. It is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, urban leisure, tourism, riverside life, and summer social scenes in the UK.

It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23R8 - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community caf?? environment, typical of independent or socially focused caf??s that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday caf?? scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local caf?? culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243D - This image shows the Market Square Clock Tower on Church Street in the centre of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The classical stone building with its prominent clock and cupola forms a focal point of the town's historic market square, a long-established civic and commercial space within Whitby's old town.
In the foreground, market stalls and canopies are set out across the cobbled square, with shoppers and visitors browsing goods. The presence of tourists alongside local residents reflects Whitby's dual role as a working market town and a major seaside visitor destination.
The clock tower building dates from the late eighteenth century and originally served as a market hall, with open arches at ground level allowing trading beneath. Today it remains a central landmark and meeting point, closely connected to Church Street and the surrounding network of narrow historic streets.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy skies, capturing the lively atmosphere of a market day in Whitby and illustrating how historic civic architecture continues to frame everyday activity and tourism in the town centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243N - This image shows a crowded late summer scene on Church Street in the historic old town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The narrow pedestrian street is lined with traditional buildings and independent shops, many associated with Whitby Jet jewellery, local crafts, and tourism-related retail.
The photograph captures a busy period, likely during the tourist season, with visitors filling the street as they walk, browse shops, and explore the town centre. People of different ages are visible, dressed for cool but settled weather, suggesting a typical day for visitors to this popular seaside destination.
Church Street forms one of Whitby's main tourist routes, linking the harbour area with attractions such as the Museum of Whitby Jet and the climb toward Whitby Abbey. Overhead wires, hanging shop signs, and historic facades contribute to the strong sense of place and heritage.
The image documents the impact of tourism on a small historic town, illustrating both the economic importance of visitors and the pressures of crowding in narrow medieval streets during peak periods. It reflects Whitby's enduring appeal as a coastal heritage destination in northern England.

It is a tribute to all women that stand against injustice. Over 100 years ago the Suffragettes gathered around the corner in Stevenson Square in a stance for equality so it is fitting that this mural is located just off the square on Little Lever Street.
This piece was organised by the Cities of Hope project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AAB - The Chinatown Gate is a grand entryway into London's lively Chinatown district and a cultural landmark. Boasting a tile roof and red pillars that lead into a vibrant area of red lanterns, noodle shops and street signs with Chinese script, the Chinatown Gate is a must-visit landmark on your way to explore the cultural area.
Each year, roughly 17 million people pass through the Chinatown Gate to visit the cultural enclave and sample delicious Chinese foods. With attractions and dining for families and solo travellers alike, Chinatown is a popular destination for sightseeing and shopping.
London's original Chinatown dates back to the start of the 20th century, but after the Blitz of World War II, many of the shops and restaurants moved to other locations. The current Chinatown, located off Shaftesbury Avenue, was established in the 1970s. The Chinatown Gate was completed in 2016 and stands as one of the largest Chinese gates in the country.
The Chinatown Gate marks the entry into Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and shops. The gate is designed with ornate features done in a traditional Qing Dynasty style that complements the stone lions, contemporary Chinese artwork and other traditional Chinese entrance points to the enclave
Along with seeing the gate itself, you can explore the wonders of Chinatown after stopping at the landmark. Chinatown features many buildings and streets with traditional dragons and lanterns, as well as street signs with English and Chinese writing.
Chinatown is also a haven for art lovers. You'll find contemporary art sculptures, impressive religious sculptures and the iconic stone lions. Chinatown is especially interesting during events, such as Chinese New Year, which features parades with floats, lion dances and live performances. You'll also see hundreds of red lanterns during the New Year celebrations that make for a spectacular sight

The famed mosaic artworks that once adorned Manchester's alternative shopping emporium Afflecks are to return ? with acclaimed Manc artist Mark Kennedy to create a host of new works piece by piece
Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks ? but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 ? a subtype of influenza type A ? is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.
In addition to the predicted flu wave, we have early indications that COVID-19 rates are beginning to rise ahead of winter, increasing the threat to people's health

Above the front door of the library is stained glass Shakespeare window. It was designed by Robert Anning Bell and depicts William Shakespeare and scenes from his plays. It was given to the library by Mrs Rosa Grindon, in memory of her husband, the famous Manchester botanist, Leo Grindon.
Inside Central Library
The main entrance hall gets its name from the huge stained glass window above the front door. The window was designed by the Arts & Crafts artist, Robert Anning Bell RA (1863-1933) and includes a portrait of William Shakespeare and scenes from many of his plays. It was given to the library by Mrs Rosa Grindon, in memory of her husband, the famous Manchester botanist, Leo Grindon.
The two other stained glass windows and the magnificent heraldic decorations were all designed by George Kruger Gray (1880-1943). On the ceiling are the arms and crests of the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancashire County Council and the Sees of York, Manchester and the City of Manchester . Around the walls are those of Manchester Grammar School, Manchester University, the Manchester Regiment, Humphrey Chetham, the Overseers of the Township, England, St George and St Mary (the patron saint of Manchester).

It was originally planned to place the monument in front of the Royal Infirmary building at Piccadilly, between the statues of Wellington and Peel. However it was felt that its ornate Gothic design was not in keeping with the neoclassical infirmary.[3] In 1863, land was offered by the Corporation which was cleared to make way for a public space

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGA3H - Irishmen and Irishwomen: In the name of God and in the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood , Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.
Having organised and trained her manhood through her secret revolutionary organisation, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and through her open military organisations, the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, having patiently perfected her discipline, having resolutely waited for the right moment to reveal itself, she now seizes that moment, and, supported by her exiled children in America and by gallant allies in Europe, but relying in the first on her own strenght, she strikes in full confidence of victory.
We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland and to unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people. In every generation the Irish people have asserted the right to national freedom and sovereingty: six times during the past three hundred years they have asserted it in arms. Standing on that fundamental right and again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a Sovereign Independent State, and we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades-in-arms to the cause of its freedom, of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations.
The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman. The Republic guarantees religious and eivil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to persue the happyness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally, and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien govt

The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4575424384 - 'Liverpool’s Dream was a three-day outdoor performance art event featuring giant marionettes, that took place in Liverpool, England, from 5 to 7 October 2018.
The event attracted more than a million visitors to the city[1] and was, in part, a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008. It was billed as being the last appearance of the giants and the final show of the ‘Giants Trilogy’ after Sea Odyssey and Memories of August 1914.
The performance was designed and performed by Royal de Luxe who are based in Nantes, France. The performance featured four giant marionettes. A little boy and girl giant, an adult giant and Xolo the dog.
The Little Boy Giant first appeared in a performance in Cameroon and was 6 m (20 ft) high and required 27 People to operate. The Giant Man was 10 m (33 ft) high and required 44 operators. The Little Girl Giant appeared in the previous two Liverpool giant events was not originally billed as being part of the performance but was revealed as a surprise on the Sunday afternoon.
Xolo the dog had appeared in the previous two Liverpool Giants performances. The Giants collectively covered a distance of 21 miles (34 km) across Liverpool and, for the first time in such an event across the river Mersey in New Brighton

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGGE73 - The Mainz Carnival (Mainzer Fastnacht) is a months-long citywide carnival celebration in Mainz, Germany that traditionally begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring.
It is one of the largest carnival events in Germany and, along with the Cologne and D?sseldorfer carnivals, Mainz is one of the three cities prominent in the rhenish carnival tradition. Aside from the celebrations, parades, and jollity which are typical of carnival traditions in many countries, the Mainz carnival has an unusual emphasis on political and literary humor and commentary.
The fountain is vitally important to all real Meenzer (people from Mainz): Every year on 11/11, all people celebrating Carnival in Mainz (fools) gather here when the clock on the balcony of the facing Osteiner Hof (Court of Ostein) strikes 11:11 p.m., which marks the fifth season of Carnival. The carnival is traditionally opened with the announcement of the 11 carnival laws.
The 8.50 metre-high carnival fountain, unveiled in 1967, designed by Blasius Spreng, is a comparatively young monument in Mainz. Nevertheless, you can't imagine it not being in the cityscape. With over 200 figures from carnival and mythology, it is a symbol of typical Mainz joie de vivre
Detailaufnahme des Fastnachtsbrunnens von unten
Detailed view of the fountain?? Landeshauptstadt Mainz
Look a little closer - which figures do you recognise? Father Rhine, the monk and the man with the blockhead, the cat, Till Eulenspiegel and the city goddess, Mogontia, the purse scrubber and the paragraph rider. They are all examples of the variety of fantasy motifs that populate the Carnival fountain.
During the 19th century celebrants began using the carnival as an opportunity to mock the military forces occupying the city's fortress. The uniforms of the carnival guards are still reminders of the uniforms of the Austrian, Prussian, and French troops which were present in the town between 1792 and 1866.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6XT - Trump Tower is a 58-floor, 664-foot-tall (202 m) mixed-use skyscraper at 721?725 Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City,USA,between East 56th and 57th Streets. It serves as the headquarters for the Trump Organization. Additionally, it houses the penthouse condominium residence of businessman, real estate developer, and former U.S. president Donald Trump, who developed the building and named it after himself. Several members of the Trump family also live, or have resided, in the building. The tower stands on a plot where the flagship store of department-store chain Bonwit Teller was formerly located.
Der Scutt of Poor, Swanke, Hayden & Connell designed Trump Tower, and Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (now the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) developed it. Although it is in one of Midtown Manhattan's special zoning districts, the tower was approved because it was to be built as a mixed-use development. Trump was permitted to add more stories to the tower in return for additional retail space and for providing privately owned public space on the ground floor, the lower level, and two outdoor terraces. There were controversies during construction, including the destruction of historically important sculptures from the Bonwit Teller store
Trump's alleged underpaying of contractors
and a lawsuit that Trump filed because the tower was not tax-exempt.
Construction on the building began in 1979. The atrium, apartments, offices, and stores opened on a staggered schedule from February to November 1983. At first, there were few tenants willing to move into the commercial and retail spaces
the residential units were sold out within months of opening. After Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower saw large increases in visitation, though security concerns required the area around the tower to be patrolled for several years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8HWD6 - Bloodhound LSR, formerly Bloodhound SSC, is a British land vehicle designed to travel at supersonic speeds with the intention of setting a new world land speed record. The arrow-shaped car, under development since 2008, is powered by a jet engine and will be fitted with an additional rocket engine. The initial goal is to exceed the current speed record of 763 mph (1,228 km/h), with the vehicle believed to be able to achieve up to 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h).
Driver Andy Green will attempt to break his own record, set in 1997. The previous business behind Project Bloodhound went into administration (bankruptcy) in late 2018. Entrepreneur Ian Warhurst bought the car to keep the project alive. A new company called Grafton LSR Ltd was formed to manage the project, which was renamed Bloodhound LSR and moved to SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College. Lack of funds and the COVID-19 pandemic stalled progress in 2020, and in 2021 the vehicle was offered for sale.
The venue for high speed testing and future world land speed record attempts is the Hakskeen Pan in the Mier area of the Northern Cape, South Africa. An area 12 miles (19 km) long and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide was identified as suitable, with the first runs in October 2019. Further runs in November 2019 achieved a top speed of 628 miles per hour (1,011 km/h), the eighth vehicle to attain a land speed of over 600 miles per hour (970 km/h).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHHN - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth ?13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1AK - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYW7 - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF00F - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and are up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast
the Catholic Short Strand from the Protestant Cluan Place areas of East Belfast
and the Protestant Fountain estate and Catholic Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed. While, on 1 September 2011, Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls, a study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM12W - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDPM6E - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT25 - SHANKILL PROTESTANT BOYS FLUTE BAND
The Shankill Protestant Boys Flute Band?or as they are more famously known now?The SPB?were formed in the Shankill area in 1980. The reasons for forming the band were much more than simply establishing another flute band?the Shankill had many at that time. The men behind the formation had other ideas. They wanted to promote and express their Protestant culture and also remember the brave Volunteers and Servicemen who had fought and died during two World Wars?in particular during the Somme offensive?and to remember those in more recent times who perished during the conflict in the war against violent Republicanism.
Sadly many of those who served the band since their beginnings 33 years ago are no longer with us?either passed away or in many instances murdered. However of the original founders around ten remain. Some, remarkably are still marching while others retain honorary membership. Gary Lenaghan? The Hunters?Harold Reynolds-The Young's?The Freel's?John McQuade?Derek Mawhinney? The Finlay's were all there at the start and remain heavily involved today.
The SPB were the first flute band to receive and carry the colours of the 1st Battalion of the Ulster Volunteer Force?in 1982?and to this day carry those colours with pride and dignity. It is a commonly known fact that these colours are carried on ALL occasions?at no time are they excluded?and in the past this has caused some difficulties?with both the Police and indeed with certain sections of the Loyal Orders. At one stage during the Eighties the band came into conflict with the Scottish Orange Institution which forced the band off the road because of their refusal to parade without their beloved colours. Since then the SPB have not walked in Scotland with the Orange.
Around the same time and with the concept of the Supergrass system being implemented the band became heavily involved with Families For Legal Rights. For ma

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT3P - The Ulster Tower is Northern Ireland's national war memorial. It was one of the first Memorials to be erected on the Western Front and commemorates the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division and all those from Ulster who served in the First World War. The memorial was officially opened on 19 November 1921 and is a very close copy of Helen's Tower which stands in the grounds of the Clandeboye Estate, near Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. Many of the men of the Ulster Division trained in the estate before moving to England and then France early in 1916.
The Tower (plus a small cafe nearby) is staffed by members of the Somme Association, which is based in Belfast.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy FDNJR0 - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a light rail tram system in Greater Manchester, England. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP Group. In 2015/16, 34.3 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track, segregated from other traffic, often running alongside the roadway or in the central reservation, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system
the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had survived up to Metrolink's creation.

Covering an area of over 25 acres (10 ha) in the centre of the city, it is the second-largest main line railway station in the United Kingdom in terms of area, the largest being London Waterloo
and is both a terminal station and a through station, in contrast to the majority of central London stations. Ticketing generally regards Waverley and Haymarket as interchangeable subject to operator validity.
It is one of 19 stations managed by Network Rail. It is the northern limit of the East Coast Main Line to Network Rail infrastructure definition, but through-services operate to Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth and Inverness.
There are many local services operated by ScotRail, including the four routes to Glasgow, the Fife Circle, and services to Stirling/Dunblane/Alloa/North Berwick/Dunbar, and the station is the terminus of the Edinburgh leg of the West Coast Main Line served by Virgin Trains and First TransPennine Express. Long distance inter-city trains to England are operated by CrossCountry to destinations such as York, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, Exeter St Davids and Plymouth.

the cost was met largely from subscriptions, and a gift from the rector Charles Jerram. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey.
The church of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar quoins and dressings and a gabled stone slate roof. There is a two-bay chancel with pointed moulded doorway and Caernarvon-arched window. The five-bay nave has offset buttresses, lancets and two-light windows in each east bay.
An organ was installed in 1860, and new choir stalls and altar rails were fitted in 1869. In 1887 the vestry was enlarged to designs by Clapton Crabb Rolfe, and in 1895 an organ by Charles Martin of Oxford replaced the earlier one.
A new pulpit was fitted in 1909 in memory of Samuel and Mary Shuffrey. It was created in the Wood Green workshop of their son Leonard Shuffrey, the leading architect and architectural designer, who is buried in the Churchyard. James Allen Shuffrey, the notable watercolour artist, and brother of Leonard Shuffrey, sang in Wood Green Church Choir as a boy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNX - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7M29 - Nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area, the Duke offers a traditional Belfast welcome of craic, music and humour in contrast to the modern fashionable establishments currently blowing into the surrounding streets. Hosting regular traditional sessions there is no better place to sample the real taste of our city ? simply step in and drink an Irish whiskey washed down with a pint of creamy stout.
Imagine Belfast with only five streets. Protected by earth ramparts and the city walls, the area where the Dark Horse now stands was convenient to the old iron foundry, the pottery, the whiskey merchants and the brown linen hall. Appreciate the superb d??cor and special atmosphere with beautiful antique mirrors, Belfast furniture and artefacts from some of the city's most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times ? providing a rather rare and unique glimpse of Belfast's historical past. Just call in and you will enjoy a huge warm welcome from a truly Belfast institution with a huge heart.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4573001216 - 'I have seen those shots with cameroon (sic cameron shurely?) as Elvis, but I was amazed to see Mr George Osbourne defaced looking like Adolf Hitler of the would be new World order while driving home through the edges of knutsford. possibly a bit severe, I dont think Adolf had the wealth of George, however by the same ruling chances are the Conservatives will be making some severe cuts, not suggesting we invade Poland or anything as european as that.
George is heir to the Osborne baronetcy (of Ballentaylor in the County of Waterford, Ireland). This makes him a part of what is known in Ireland as the Ascendancy, the old Anglo-Irish aristocracy. His father, Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet, is co-founder of the fabric and wallpapers designers, Osborne &
Little. Osborne's wealth is estimated at £4.3m by the New Statesman www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2009/10/oxford-universit... . He is also reported to be next in line to inherit a substantial share of Osborne &
Little, his father's luxury wallpaper company, which is thought to be worth over £1 billion. so he would fit well in one of Britains safest Tory seats here in Tatton. Hopefully he would look to the needs of his constituents lower down the social ladder, customers of Cheshire Peaks &
Plains Housing Trust, Contour Homes or Great Places Housing Group as well as the more affluent.
After achieving an upper 2nd class degree at Magdalen College at Oxford University and being a member of the Bullingdon Club, a private dining club of Oxford University students (which was 'infamous for riotous behaviour' and was open only to sons of aristocratic families and the wealthy. Osborne's friends David Cameron and Nat Rothschild were also members of the club), he tried to persue a career as a journalist, but then moved to a vacent position at Conservative Central Office. he cut his teeth on the Prime Minister's Questions team for the various Conservative incumbent leaders Hague, Howard and cameron. Indeed, Osbourne and Cameron are godfathers to each other's children, so this may make his position safer.
The graffitti is interesting as it suggests a Europe leaning overtone, one that tories would rarther hide under the carpet for the moment. How palitable would a referendum on leaving the EU? Marginal if that.
Having said that, its looking more like a hung or balanced parliament might be imminent. We in Britain could be heading for Cleggagedden, whatever that means. Personally, I would like the best of all worlds if possible. The best of the free market and the social conscience with a respect for the environment and each other. If I see that with proportional representation or a (well) 'hung parliament' then so it must be.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4560602809 - 'Eastgate, shown here and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building. You know you have been on a visit to Chester when you have an image of this clock in your memory card. To avoid this failure of imagination, this photograph was taken from under the clock mechanism.
Eastgate was originally defended by a timber tower. The road running through the gate led to Manchester, then across the Pennines to York. By the 18th century the city walls were no longer needed for defensive purposes and so, rather than being pulled down, they were converted into walkways. The medieval gateways were obstructing the traffic into the city and were replaced by wider arched gateways with balustraded parapets. The first gateway to be replaced was Eastgate in 1768 which was rebuilt as an 'elegant arch'. It was built at the expense of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, and designed by Mr Hayden (or Heyden), the earl's surveyor of buildings.
Eastgate today is a clutch of upmarket shops, Browns Jewellers, banks and the Chester Grosvenor Five Star Hotel. Afternoons are a swirl of rushing shoppers, some stationary Italian, Japanese and American tourists and generally the street artist or odd busker knocking out 'Wonderwall'. To the right the wooden 'rows' uniquely of Chester can be seen, including the 'Ye Olde Boot Inn'. A fine watering hole with Sam Smiths ales, the oldest in Chester, circa 1643.

The main area of the cemetery is located to the north of Barlow Moor Road and to the west of the A5103 Princess Road
a northwards extension is situated to the north of Nell Lane. Manchester City Council owns and administers the cemetery.
There is an interesting Jewish Cemetery in the northwest section, next to Barlow Moor Road and a Muslim section adjacent to it: the rest of the area of the cemetery is divided into plots for particular classes of person, e.g. Anglicans, Roman Catholics, others.

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.
The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
The Baths are a major tourist attraction and, together with the Grand Pump Room, receive more than one million visitors a year, with 1,037,518 people during 2009. It was featured on the 2005 TV program Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the West Country. Visitors can see the Baths and Museum but cannot enter the water. An audio guide is available in several languages.
In 2009 a grant of ?90,000 was made to Bath and North East Somerset Council to contribute towards the cost of re-developing displays and improving access to the Roman Baths, by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport/Wolfson Fund, which was established to promote improvements in Museums and Galleries in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4468213250 - 'Rehearsal with conductor Jeremy Jackman prior to the candlelight concert by the English Baroque Choir. St Martins is in the north east corner of Trafalgar Square, central London. The patron saint is Martin of Tours.
It is a classic church, a bit of peace from the noise and traffic of Westminster. Its pretty much rectangular with Corinthian style columns. As can be seen here, the ceiling is lovely and provides a warm glow inside. The large window at the altar has an interesting distortion.
There was a lot of work done between 2006-2008 to renovate different parts of the structure. The new East Window installed above the altar at St Martin in the Fields was one element. Designed by Shirazeh Houshiary, in collaboration with architect Pip Horne. This window replacing the old window (following World War II bomb damage) marked the final stage of the church's Renewal Project on 28 April 2008.
Donations are always welcome however and I noticed it is still possible to sponsor a pane of glass and 'Give light to St Martin's'. It offers social care services to London's Chinese community and homeless people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23PH - Circus Tavern, Manchester, United Kingdom. The smallest pub in the city.
Manchesters second smallest boozer, with room for approximately twenty people including the feisty bar maid. The kind of venue where the music would stop when you walked in - that's if they had room for speakers - but within half an hour you'd be on first name terms with the regulars.
Not exactly a vast array of cocktails (This is more for the beer drinkers and G&T lovers) this is a bar that you hope will stay in Manchester for ever. In fact it's central location, on the busy Portland Street near Manchesters china town, makes it even more surprising that this hasn't been turned into apartments.

Usually containing only strong tobacco, the traditional waterpipe has many names in the near east: Hukkah, shisha, nargeeleh, nargile, nargilen or argeelah.
The pipe appears to have originated in India. Initially in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar (around 1542 ). Following the European introduction of tobacco to India, Hakim Abul Fateh Gilani a descendant of Abdul Qadir Al-Gilani came from Baghdad to India who was later a physician in the court of Mughal raised concerns after smoking tobacco became popular among Indian noblemen, and subsequently envisaged a system which allowed smoke to be passed through water in order to be 'purified'.
This new pipe for smoking soon became a status symbol for the Indian aristocracy and gentry. These days the Hookah west of Cyprus and east of Thailand is ubiquitous.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K69A4H - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN0YP - An Aberdeen street art festival has been given a national award following a public poll.
Over four days in April, international artists gathered to brighten up the city by creating large public murals for Nuart.
Business organisation Aberdeen Inspired played a large role in developing the festival, and has now been commended at the 2017 National Business Improvement District (BID) Awards for this.
Following an online vote by members of the public and deliberation by an expert panel, it was awarded the Place Management award over five other BIDs from across the UK.
The win marks the fourth award Nuart Aberdeen has won, including helping the city toward its European BID of the Year victory in July.
Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: We're absolutely delighted that Nuart Aberdeen has been recognised with another national award against strong competition from across the UK.
The festival was very successful and sparked a huge amount of interest in the city with large crowds coming to the centre to see the street art throughout the year. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYBHA3 - A Prayer Room is an opportunity to draw aside, take time out and meet with God. It is a dedicated space where people can go to pray and seek God, to intercede and petition. Jesus withdrew to pray (Mt 14:13
Lk 5:12-16
Jn 6:14-16), not at the expense of serving the Father but in order to be more effective in that.
The key is not about the physical space but about making space for relationship with God who from the beginning of time longs to be with His people and connect with them. We know that God is everywhere and we can meet with God anywhere and everywhere, but a Prayer Room with time and place set aside can be an important part of growing in relationship with God. It's a great addition to be part of continual prayer in local church life and helpful being in a place with no distractions with focuses for prayer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEK5 - Anthony Howard Wilson (20 February 1950 ? 10 August 2007) was a British record label owner, radio and television presenter, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC.
Wilson was the man behind some of Manchester's most successful bands. He was one of the five co-founders of Factory Records and the founder and manager of the Ha??ienda nightclub. Wilson was known as Mr Manchester, dubbed as such for his work in promoting the culture of Manchester throughout his career.
He was portrayed by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, and by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn's 2007 film Control.
Depending in what he was working on, he would switch between alternate versions of his name. For example, when he was being a serious formal and respectable persona, such as certain tv presenting appearances, he would use Anthony H Wilson, or for example when reporting for Granada Reports he was referred to as Anthony Wilson, otherwise he would go by Tony Wilson most commonly while on Factory Records business, all alternate versions being legitimate variants of his full name.
In early 2007 emergency surgery was performed to remove one of his kidneys. This forced the postponement of plans to create a Southern Hemisphere version of the In the City festival. Despite the surgery, cancer progressed and a course of chemotherapy was not effective. Wilson died of a heart attack in Manchester's Christie Hospital on 10 August 2007 aged 57. Following the news of his death, the Union Flag on Manchester Town Hall was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
The main square of the HOME/First Street development in Manchester, which opened in 2015, is named Tony Wilson Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ68T - Passengers crowd a ScotRail train and platform at Glasgow Central Station, Glasgow G1 3SL, illustrating peak-time congestion and the everyday pressures of rail commuting in Scotland's busiest transport hub. The image shows a dense flow of people boarding and alighting from a modern ScotRail carriage beneath the station's historic iron and glass roof.
Glasgow Central handles some of the highest passenger volumes in the Scottish rail network, serving long-distance intercity services as well as heavily used commuter routes across the Central Belt. During peak periods, platforms and carriages can become severely crowded, reflecting sustained demand for rail travel linked to employment patterns, housing location and urban concentration.
Since ScotRail's return to public ownership in 2022, issues such as capacity, reliability, rolling stock availability and timetable resilience have remained central to political and media debate. Supporters of public control argue that long-term planning and social value should take precedence, while critics highlight ongoing challenges faced by daily commuters, including overcrowding and service disruption.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate discussions around commuter experience, transport investment, public service delivery and the limits of existing rail infrastructure. The visible mix of ages, workwear and shopping bags emphasises the role of rail as an essential, everyday service rather than a discretionary mode of travel.
Photographed at platform level with strong contextual detail, the image carries high editorial value for coverage of commuting pressures, public transport policy, rail reform and the lived experience of passengers in Scotland's urban centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM12J - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDPM11 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
