Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ER9NFR - Electronic ticket barriers line the bright passenger concourse at Haymarket railway station in Edinburgh, Scotland. The wide interior is covered by a curved glazed roof, allowing daylight into the modern entrance hall, while the older stone station building remains visible beyond the gateline. Travellers approach and pass through the automated barriers using paper tickets, smartcards or compatible digital tickets, with yellow readers mounted on each gate. Several barrier panels carry colourful artwork, adding visual interest to the functional transport setting.
Haymarket is Edinburgh's second major railway station after Waverley and serves commuter, regional and long-distance services. It is particularly important for journeys west and north from the capital, including routes towards Glasgow, Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and the West Coast Main Line. The station is managed by ScotRail and has the National Rail code HYM. Its central location also provides connections with Edinburgh Trams, local buses, taxis and airport services, making it an important interchange for commuters, tourists and event crowds.
The original Haymarket station opened in 1842 as the Edinburgh terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. Its historic entrance and office block are protected as a listed building. A £25 million Network Rail redevelopment created a larger concourse, improved circulation, new lifts and step-free access, with the new main building officially opened in December 2013. The project retained the historic station frontage while adding the spacious glass-and-steel structure shown here.
This editorial image illustrates railway ticket control, fare collection, public transport infrastructure, passenger movement, station accessibility and investment in Scotland's rail network. It is also relevant to ticketless travel, contactless payment, transport security, urban mobility, sustainable travel and the modernisation of historic railway stations

The image shows a modern British rail scene, combining the practical detail of an electronic train destination board, interior seating, lit carriage windows and platform lighting with the quiet atmosphere of evening travel. Although the exact station location is not confirmed by the image, the destination sign clearly links the service with Doncaster, an important South Yorkshire railway hub on the East Coast Main Line and on regional cross-Pennine routes. Doncaster station is served by TransPennine Express, with the operator publishing station and route information for journeys involving Doncaster. The photograph has strong editorial value for stories about rail travel in northern England, regional train services, commuting, public transport, passenger information systems, evening journeys, railway capacity, rolling stock, station stops and intercity connections. It can also illustrate wider themes such as northern transport infrastructure, rail operations, reliability, passenger experience, alternatives to car travel, regional towns, and Doncaster as a transport interchange. The visible passengers add a human dimension without dominating the frame, while the dark exterior and bright green LED destination display create a documentary feel suited to news, transport, travel and infrastructure features. The scene appears to be taken in dry evening conditions, under artificial platform lighting, with the blue-grey train bodywork, orange marker light and reflected interior glow giving the image a distinctly urban railway mood. This is a useful stock image for coverage of TransPennine Express services, train operating companies, regional rail networks, evening commuting, station environments, rail timetables and journeys to Doncaster.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHT1H - Passengers waiting in the illuminated platform 2 shelter at Manchester Oxford Road railway station, photographed at dusk or after dark in Manchester city centre. The image shows the distinctive curved timber and glass waiting area, designed to echo the station's celebrated laminated wood architecture and platform canopies. Manchester Oxford Road is well known for its unusual post-war railway design, with timber structures used to reduce the load on the viaduct beneath the station rather than relying on heavier masonry, iron, steel or concrete. The station's main buildings and platform structures are Grade II listed, giving this everyday commuter scene added architectural and heritage interest. The photograph captures a quiet but recognisable moment in urban rail travel: passengers seated on wooden benches, bright interior lighting, reflective glass, platform barriers, night shadows and the muted glow of city railway infrastructure. It is useful for editorial stories about public transport, railway commuting, Manchester travel, station waiting rooms, passenger experience, evening journeys, railway safety, urban design, listed transport architecture and the continuing role of regional rail stations in daily life. The shelter's rounded black frame and timber interior visually connect with Oxford Road's wider station character, while the dusk setting adds atmosphere and a sense of waiting between trains. The scene can also illustrate themes around night travel, city centre transport hubs, station facilities, rail passenger comfort, commuting culture, train delays, late-night journeys, station refurbishment and the balance between heritage design and modern passenger needs. Visible details include platform railings, glass doors, bench seating, passengers in winter or evening clothing and the platform edge environment, making the photograph strong for documentary, transport, architectural, Manchester, railway, infrastructure and social-use picture research.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M92 - EasyJet boarding and cabin bag sizer sign at a departure gate inside Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily, showing separate directions for Speedy Boarding and all other customers, plus illustrated cabin bag size rules. The orange gate sign highlights the practical reality of low-cost air travel, where cheap headline fares are often accompanied by strict baggage limits, paid priority boarding options and potential charges if a cabin bag is too large for the airline gauge. EasyJet's current cabin bag guidance says every passenger may bring one small under-seat bag free of charge, with maximum dimensions of 45 x 36 x 20 cm including handles and wheels, while larger cabin bags are generally linked to paid options such as Speedy Boarding, selected fares, extra legroom or upfront seats. This image can illustrate budget airline business models, ancillary revenue, cabin bag restrictions, passenger frustration, boarding gate checks, airport retail-style pricing, consumer rights, travel costs and the irritation caused by oversize cabin luggage fees. The photograph also works for stories about European air travel, Sicily tourism, Catania departures, family holidays, airline rules, airport queues, boarding procedures and the difference between basic fares and enhanced fare bundles. The setting appears to be an indoor airport gate area, with fluorescent ceiling lighting, queue barriers, seated passengers and a quiet pre-boarding atmosphere. The sign's clear split between Speedy Boarding and other passengers gives useful visual context for articles about priority boarding, airline segmentation and the way budget carriers manage limited overhead locker space. The tone should be factual and editorial: the image records passenger-facing baggage control systems and perceived punitive charging practices, but the specific fee or enforcement outcome for any individual passenger is not shown.

The image is a useful editorial view of everyday public transport in Warrington town centre, showing commuters, shoppers, school and college users, visitors and local passengers using a modern bus station linked to the Golden Square shopping centre and close to Warrington Central railway station. Warrington Borough Council says it owns and manages the Bus Interchange, which is near Warrington Central rail station, and AccessAble gives the interchange address as Winwick Street, Warrington, WA1 1XW. Warrington's Own Buses says its Travel Shop at Warrington Interchange provides ticket sales, general enquiries, timetables and route information. The photograph is commercially useful for stories about bus services, passenger footfall, local transport, public transport funding, town centre accessibility, route information, timetable advice, integrated transport, transport interchanges and the role of buses in reducing car dependency. It can also illustrate the challenges facing town centres, including commuter patterns, retail access, passenger safety, evening service levels, concessionary travel, fare policy and the practical dependence of many residents on reliable local bus networks. The visible concourse, information office, glass doors, red architectural detailing, stand signage and passengers give the scene strong documentary value for transport policy, municipal bus operation, urban regeneration and local authority infrastructure. As a stock image, it records the inside of a working bus interchange rather than a staged transport scene, making it useful for articles about local and regional mobility, waiting environments, accessibility, customer information, passenger flows and the everyday public spaces that keep a town connected.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEA6 - Passengers gather beneath the large electronic departure boards at London Euston station during the evening, waiting for northbound services on the West Coast Main Line. The crowded concourse, visible platform signs, digital clock and rows of blue train information screens create a strong editorial image of rail travel pressure, station management and passenger uncertainty at one of Britain's best known intercity terminals. The display shows destinations including Glasgow Central, Manchester Piccadilly, Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street, while several services are delayed, preparing, boarding or still awaiting platform confirmation. This makes the photograph commercially useful for stories on rail disruption, delayed trains, overcrowding, evening commuting, passenger information, public transport reliability, intercity travel and the problems caused when large numbers of travellers wait for late platform announcements. Euston is the London gateway for many journeys to the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland, with services operated by Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, the Caledonian Sleeper and London Overground. The image captures the practical reality of modern rail journeys, where passengers often cluster under departure screens, scanning for boarding information before moving quickly to numbered platforms. It can illustrate wider themes including rail capacity, station safety, crowd control, timetable resilience, transport investment, railway infrastructure, customer experience, public information systems and the continuing importance of the West Coast Main Line. The indoor evening lighting, busy concourse and waiting passengers give the scene a documentary feel, suitable for news, travel, transport policy, consumer rights, infrastructure planning and features about the everyday stress of travelling from London to northern England and Scotland by train. The image also reflects ongoing debate about how major stations manage crowds

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EBGJFR - Copenhagen Harbour Bus 991 public transport boat is pictured on the water in the Danish capital, with the destination display showing Teglholmen and passengers standing on the open deck under dramatic evening light. The bright orange vessel forms part of Copenhagen's integrated public transport network, where harbour buses operate like ordinary buses but travel along the inner harbour, linking waterfront districts and giving commuters, residents and visitors a practical way to cross or travel through the city by water. Visit Copenhagen describes the harbour buses as part of the public transport system and notes that stock-photo/gotonysmith-Route.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>route 991 runs in the direction of Teglholmen, while route 992 runs towards Orientkaj. The harbour bus service is a distinctive subject for editorial use around Copenhagen tourism, sustainable transport, Nordic urban design, harbour regeneration, waterfront commuting, public transport integration, city ferries and low emission travel. The image shows the experience at passenger level rather than as a distant postcard view, with people, railings, the driver's cabin, the orange ferry structure, water and changing sky all combining to give a documentary travel feel. It is useful for stories about how Copenhagen makes its harbour part of everyday movement, not just scenery, and how former industrial waterfronts such as Teglholmen and Sluseholmen have become connected residential and mixed-use districts. The photograph also suits themes of car-free sightseeing, public transport tickets, boat commuting, urban mobility, Scandinavian lifestyle, city breaks, transport infrastructure and the appeal of seeing Copenhagen from the water without taking a specialist tourist cruise. The soft low sun, blue sky and dark cloud add visual drama, while the passengers on deck give scale and human interest. It is a strong stock image for travel guides, transport features, tourism articles, climate-conscious city planning, harbour bus route explainers and editorial coverage

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1EN - Close-up view of a Warrington Central railway station nameboard on a platform beneath the station canopy, showing blue and white National Rail style signage against brickwork, metal roof structure and historic railway architecture. Warrington Central is one of the main railway stations serving Warrington in Cheshire, located on Winwick Street near the northern edge of the town centre. National Rail identifies the station code as WAC, gives the address as Winwick Street, Warrington, Cheshire WA2 7TT, and lists the station as managed by Northern. The station is used by passengers travelling on the Liverpool to Manchester corridor and forms an important local public transport link for commuters, students, shoppers, visitors and regional rail users across North West England. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of Warrington transport, Northern rail services, railway commuting, public transport infrastructure, town centre connectivity, National Rail signage, platform environments and regional rail travel. It can also support features on railway heritage, as Warrington Central opened in the 1870s on the Cheshire Lines Committee route, with the Central suffix added shortly afterwards. The station's surviving brickwork, platform canopy and traditional urban railway setting help connect current train travel with Victorian-era railway expansion and the historic competition between routes serving Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and Lancashire. The image has practical stock value for local news, travel guides, transport reporting, rail disruption stories, station accessibility, timetable changes, sustainable travel, public investment, commuter behaviour and comparisons with Warrington Bank Quay. It also works as a clean generic but identifiable image for articles about rail services in Warrington, Northern-managed stations, station facilities, ticket offices, step-free access, regional mobility and the everyday experience of using Britain's railway network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEBF - Coventry railway station is seen at dusk after rain, with warm station lighting, wet paving and passengers moving through the modern entrance area at Station Square. The image shows the striking red and black redevelopment beside the older rail complex, giving a strong editorial view of everyday public transport, urban regeneration and evening travel in the West Midlands. Coventry station is a major city railway gateway on the West Coast Main Line, used by commuters, students, leisure travellers and visitors moving between London, Birmingham, the wider Midlands and other UK destinations. The reflective paving, grey winter sky, umbrellas, coats and glowing interior lights create a useful atmospheric stock image for rail travel, station access, public realm design, city centre connectivity, sustainable transport, commuting, transport infrastructure and railway investment. Visible passengers, bollards, planters, signage, glass frontage and the station forecourt help place the scene in a real, working urban environment rather than a generic architectural view. The photograph can illustrate stories about Coventry's transport links, railway modernisation, station redevelopment, passenger experience, public transport interchange, city centre regeneration, evening commuting, wet weather travel and investment around station districts. The red framed building and illuminated windows also make the image suitable for articles on contemporary station architecture, post-industrial city renewal, Midlands economic development, rail accessibility and the role of well-connected stations in supporting tourism, employment and university travel. The dusk timing gives extra commercial value for features needing a moody but recognisable British railway image, with enough people present to show scale, movement and daily use without making the scene feel overcrowded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X5K8B3 - This carefully observed stock photograph records FirstBus 35545 LeedsCity WyMetro service 1 Beeston Line, on The Headrow, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, LS1 6PU. The row metadata places the subject at The Headrow, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, LS1 6PU. The spreadsheet date indicates 06 May 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows FirstBus, First Bus, bus, West Park, route, commuters, commuting, West Park Via Leeds City Centre, with search-relevant terms including FirstBus, First Bus, bus, West Park, route, commuters, commuting, West Park Via Leeds City Centre, mTicket, SK68TVJ, UK, England, transport, public. Transport pictures are especially useful because they show the infrastructure and passenger experience behind policy debates about connectivity, reliability and regional investment. Leeds is one of the major cities of Yorkshire, shaped by markets, textiles, banking, retail, universities, railway connections and a large modern service economy, making city-centre details useful for stories about northern growth and urban change. Transport images are useful because they show the lived reality behind policy debates about public transport, reliability, fares, regional connectivity, disabled access, climate goals, commuter patterns and the social value of buses and railways. The image can work as a lead picture, a supporting cutaway, a contextual inset or a visual metaphor for wider stories about place, services, consumer behaviour, heritage, transport, culture and public life. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFFX - Liverpool Central railway station in Liverpool, England, forms a central hub of the Merseyrail network, being on both the Northern Line and the Wirral Line. The station is located underground on two levels, below the site of a former mainline terminus. It is the busiest station in Liverpool, though considerably smaller than Lime Street station, the mainline terminus, and the busiest station to operate solely on the Merseyrail network. The station is the busiest underground station outside London serving 40,000 people daily. The station in passengers per platform is the busiest underground railway station in the United Kingdom at 5,217,547 per platform per annum and laying third in all stations, underground or overground.
Liverpool Central is one of nine stations on the Merseyrail network to incorporate automatic ticket gates. The main concourse is part of a shopping centre, and includes a closed subway link to the former Lewis's department store
Liverpool Central Low Level underground terminal station opened on 11 January 1892, at the end of the Mersey Railway's route, via the Mersey Railway Tunnel from Birkenhead, when the route was extended from James Street station. The Mersey Railway platforms were underground, accessed from stairs within the High Level station and situated in roughly the same position as the escalators accessing the Northern Line today.
The Mersey Railway tunnel entering Central Low Level from the north of the station was aligned with the High Level station's approach tunnel from the south. This was to ensure minimum engineering work if ever the two tunnels were to be linked upas did occur in the 1970s.
The Merseyrail network was created in the 1970s by merging separate railways into one integrated network. Central underground station would service the Northern and Wirral Lines.
A new loop tunnel was built in Liverpool city centre for Wirral Line trains, linking James Street station with Moorfields, Lime Street and Liverpool Central

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AFW - Harrogate railway station serves the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Harrogate Line it is 18.25 miles (29 km) north of Leeds. Northern Trains operate the station and provide local passenger train services, with a London North Eastern Railway service to and from London King's Cross running six times per day.
History
The station was opened by the North Eastern Railway on 1 August 1862. It was designed by the architect Thomas Prosser and was the first building in Harrogate built of brick and had two platforms. Before it opened (and the associated approach lines), the town's rail routes had been somewhat fragmented the York and North Midland Railway branch line from Church Fenton via Tadcaster had a terminus in the town (see below), but the Leeds Northern Railway main line between Leeds and Thirsk bypassed it to the east to avoid costly engineering work to cross the Crimple Valley and the East and West Yorkshire Junction Railway from York terminated at Starbeck. Once the individual companies had become part of the NER, the company concentrated all lines at a new single depot.
The station was largely demolished in 1964/65 and replaced with a more utilitarian one (with fewer platforms) by Taylor Bown and Miller, Architects (Harrogate). A car park now occupies the site of the former bay platforms on the south side. It coincided with the loss of three of the main routes through the town in the Beeching Axe both routes via Wetherby closed to passenger traffic on 6 January 1964 and the Leeds Northern route to Northallerton via Ripon on 6 March 1967.
The York branch was included in Beeching's 1963 report, but it was reprieved in 1966 and remains open.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ378 - Manchester Piccadilly is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. Opened as Store Street in 1842, it was renamed Manchester London Road in 1847 and became Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. Located to the south-east of Manchester city centre, it hosts long-distance intercity and cross-country services to national destinations including London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton and Bournemouth
regional services to destinations in Northern England including Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and York
and local commuter services around Greater Manchester. It is one of 19 major stations managed by Network Rail. The station has 14 platforms: 12 terminal and two through platforms (numbers 13 and 14). Piccadilly is also a major interchange with the Metrolink light rail system with two tram platforms in its undercroft.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in the Manchester station group with over 30 million passenger entries and exits between April 2019 and March 2020
A major redevelopment of the station and surrounding area has been proposed to complement the HS2 proposals involving the construction of a canopy over the HS2 platforms, the creation of a new entrance, and office, retail and residential development. Designs indicate that the derelict Mayfield Station and the Gateway House office block will be demolished. The plans were approved by the Government in November 2016
Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) proposals include the construction of new platforms under Piccadilly station and the proposed HS2 platforms. The 2016 'Manchester Piccadilly Options Assessment' by the National Infrastructure Commission stated: Addition of Northern Powerhouse Rail and Station to the Manchester Piccadilly system will be the last step of the process of transforming the station in to a transport super hub. The NPR station and its construction will need to be considered throughout the design and implementation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC95RD - Deansgate-Castlefield is a tram stop on Greater Manchester's Metrolink light rail system, on Deansgate in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre. It opened on 27 April 1992 as G-Mex tram stop, taking its name from the adjacent G-Mex Centre, a concert, conference and exhibition venue
the G-Mex Centre was rebranded as Manchester Central in 2007, prompting the Metrolink stop to be renamed on 20 September 2010.[1] The station underwent redevelopment in 201415 to add an extra platform in preparation for the completion of the Second City Crossing in 201617.
Deansgate-Castlefield serves as a transport hub by integrating with National Rail services from Deansgate railway station by a footbridge. Exits from the station lead to the Great Northern Warehouse, the reconstructed Mamucium Roman Fort, the Beetham Tower, and Deansgate Locks. Part of Zone 1, the stop is one of the most used on the Metrolink network.
In August 2010 Metrolink announced it would be changing the name of the stop from 'G-Mex' to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'. On 2 September 2010, signs at the stop were changed to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'
a couple of days later temporary vinyl GMEX stickers were placed on top which were removed on 20 September 2010 when the name change was made.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4CAA - Interior view of a crowded Manchester Metrolink tram travelling through the city centre, with passengers standing closely together under yellow grab rails and hanging straps. The image shows the everyday pressure and usefulness of light rail in a growing regional city, where commuters, visitors and shoppers rely on tram services to move between rail stations, offices, venues, universities, retail streets and residential districts. The bright yellow fittings now sit comfortably with the wider Bee Network identity, Greater Manchester's joined-up public transport programme associated with Mayor Andy Burnham and Transport for Greater Manchester. The photograph works well for editorial stories about urban commuting, public transport capacity, passenger crowding, sustainable travel, transport devolution, city centre mobility, modal shift, clean air, car-free travel and the politics of bringing buses, trams and local rail into a more integrated system.
Manchester Metrolink opened in 1992 and became one of the most recognisable modern transport systems in the North of England, converting former heavy rail routes and city streets into a light rail network linking the city centre with towns and suburbs across Greater Manchester. The Bee Network, launched from 2023, broadened that story into a London-style local transport ambition, with common branding, simpler ticketing and a stronger public-service identity across bus, tram, walking, wheeling and cycling. This crowded carriage captures the human side of that policy: the closeness of rush-hour travel, the handholds, the standing passengers, the shared space and the practical reality of getting across Manchester without a car. The image is useful for articles on Andy Burnham's transport agenda, Greater Manchester devolution, commuter behaviour, tram patronage, infrastructure demand, public transport investment, urban congestion, city centre regeneration and the social value of accessible mass transit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB63 - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NFA - Warrington's Own Buses has moved into a new £10 million depot kitted out with chargers ready for the introduction of 105 new buses next year.
The new facility on Dallam Lane replace the previous depot on Wilderspool Causeway and was funded by Warrington Borough Council, the Towns Fund and the Getting Building fund.
Warrington's Own Buses's fleet is set to be fully electrified next year, courtesy of a Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme which was given the go-ahead on 13 February.
The first electric vehicles are not expected to enter service until the end of this year, so the depot has capacity for diesel buses in the meantime.
Managing Director of Warrington's Own Buses, Ben Wakerley, says: I'm really pleased that, after many years of planning, we have finally opened our new bus depot. We have been working hard to transfer our bus services and operations over from Wilderspool Causeway, and I'm very proud of our team for their support in a smooth transition for the company.
The support from all of the organisations involved in supporting our new depot has been immense everyone has really pulled together and I'm pleased that another important step in the continued development of Warrington's bus services has been made.
Better facilities will improve bus maintenance, reliability and, ultimately, improved customer service.
Warrington council's Hans Mundry, cabinet member for highways, transportation and public realm, adds: The opening of the new bus depot for Warrington's Own Buses is significant, as it paves the way for further bus service improvements.
We have already seen a good increase in passenger numbers since we introduced our Better By Bus campaign which has brought reduced fares and improved timetables and we can now look forward to the new depot supporting the arrival of our cutting-edge, all-electric bus fleet ZEBRA next year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JR64 - This image shows passengers travelling on a long underground escalator within the Budapest Metro system in Hungary. The steep, extended escalator descends deep below street level, a distinctive feature of several Budapest metro lines built during the socialist era, designed to function both as mass transit infrastructure and civil defence shelters.
The tunnel-like station interior is lined with pale panels and evenly spaced lighting, creating a strong sense of depth and perspective as commuters move steadily up and down the escalator. People of different ages and backgrounds are visible, reflecting the everyday use of the metro by residents and visitors alike as part of daily city life in Budapest.
The photograph was taken indoors under artificial lighting, capturing a typical moment of urban movement rather than a staged scene. The converging lines of the escalator, walls, and ceiling draw the eye towards the centre of the frame, emphasising scale, motion, and the functional design of underground transport systems.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating themes of public transport, urban infrastructure, commuting, European city life, travel, tourism, and the role of metro systems in supporting sustainable mobility in major cities.

The scene captures the practical moment after landing when passengers leave the aircraft away from a jet bridge and move towards the terminal or onward transfer arrangements. The visible Jet2 branding, aircraft stairs, cabin door, passengers, luggage and ground markings give the image clear context for UK and European leisure travel, airport turnaround procedures and the everyday rhythm of budget and holiday airline operations. It is commercially useful for articles on evening arrivals, summer holidays, airport capacity, regional airports, passenger experience, travel disruption, airline punctuality, package holidays, tourism and the changing economics of air travel. The wide panoramic crop adds scale and atmosphere, showing both the aircraft and the surrounding apron rather than a tight close-up of passengers. The picture can also support broader features on aviation emissions, sustainable aviation, low-cost travel, airside safety, ground crew coordination and the pressure on airlines to turn aircraft round efficiently. Care should be taken not to imply boarding, delay or any incident unless supported by separate information, because the visible action is routine passenger disembarkation after arrival. As a documentary stock image, it records a familiar but visually appealing end-of-flight moment, with passengers stepping from aircraft to apron under a calm dusk sky.
Passengers disembark from a Jet2 aircraft on an airport apron at dusk, using mobile stairs after an

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNWB - Abellio East Midlands Limited, trading as East Midlands Railway (EMR), is a train operating company in England, owned by Transport UK Group, and is the current operator of the East Midlands franchise
In March 2017, the Department for Transport announced that Arriva, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, and incumbent Stagecoach had been shortlisted to bid for the next East Midlands franchise. Abellio was added in February 2018.
FirstGroup and Trenitalia pulled out of the bidding process in April 2018 to focus on the West Coast Partnership franchise. In April 2019 the franchise was awarded to Abellio, with East Midlands Railway (EMR) to take over the franchise from East Midlands Trains (EMT) on 18 August 2019 for a period of eight years.
In June 2019, Abellio revealed branding and colour scheme using distinct purple and white colours to reflect the heritage of the East Midlands. It also confirmed it would divide the services into three segments:
EMR InterCity for long-distance services from London St Pancras
EMR Regional for services across the East Midlands
EMR Electrics for the outer suburban London St Pancras to Corby service
In April 2021 it was announced that EMR Electrics would be rebranded as EMR Connect.
In February 2023, Transport UK Group concluded a management buyout of Abellio's United Kingdom business, which included EMR

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PMNDN8 - Main concourse inside Sheffield railway station on Sheaf Street, Sheffield City Centre, South Yorkshire, England. Passengers wait, walk and check departure information beneath the station's broad glazed roof and decorative railway architecture, making the image useful for editorial stories about rail travel, public transport, commuting, city centre access, railway investment and northern transport policy. Sheffield station is a major gateway for South Yorkshire, serving local, regional and intercity journeys and connecting the city with Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, London, Liverpool and the wider rail network. The visible concourse, passenger information screens, ticket barrier area, seating and waiting travellers give the picture strong relevance for news, magazine, web, public sector, transport and infrastructure use.
The image also has wider context around the long-running debate over rail capacity, reliability and electrification across the North of England. The Sheffield to Manchester route via the Hope Valley line crosses the Peak District and has historically suffered from capacity constraints, with passenger trains sharing the corridor with freight. Network Rail announced completion of the £150 million Hope Valley Railway Upgrade in April 2024, describing work intended to improve reliability and journey performance between Manchester and Sheffield by removing bottlenecks and allowing passenger trains to overtake slower freight services. However, the route is still not a fully electrified modern main line in the way many northern transport campaigners have argued is needed for cleaner, faster and more resilient services.
For image buyers, the value is both local and national: a clear, recognisable Sheffield station interior, active passengers, readable railway information screens, transport architecture and a live public realm scene. It can illustrate Sheffield city travel, railway commuting, northern rail investment, station management, rail passenger ex

Customers say lives upended by ripped up schedules and woeful performance. More at https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/may/09/transpennine-express-awaits-contract-decision-amid-poor-service-record
Once, it seemed like a good idea to live in the Pennines and commute by train. Susannah Simmons, a violinist at Opera North, moved to Marsden for quick and easy access to her work in Leeds and Manchester. The service was far from perfect but satisfactory, she says. But for at least the past year nearly all trains I would have used have been cancelled or delayed, forcing me to drive everywhere.
Like countless others, her life has been upended by ripped-up schedules and woeful performance of TransPennine Express.
Ministers are expected to announce this week whether the operator will be replaced or awarded a fresh deal potentially for up to eight years.
Expectations are that TPE, owned by London-listed First Group the only remaining British transport firm operating passenger trains on the UK's privatised railway - will be given another chance to turn operations around, with a short extension of six to 12 months when its contract expires on 28 May.
But train failures are a potent political issue in the north. The announcement was withheld until after the local elections and the results of last week's vote and the potential for further backlash in red wall seats have given ministers further pause before renewing First's contract, according to a source close to the process.
MPs and mayors across the north have urged the government to get a grip after the operator's abysmal record of delayed, disrupted and cancelled services whose true extent was only officially confirmed after the regulator warned firms against concealing last-minute schedule changes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M369GH - Edinburgh Trams is a tramway in Edinburgh, Scotland, operated by Edinburgh Trams Ltd. It is a 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) line between St Andrew Square in the New Town and Edinburgh Airport, with 15 stops.
Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of £375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to £521 million. The final cost after delays was £776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. −£9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. The extended line is due to be operational by early 2023

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KA3T15 - Stagecoach Gold is a luxury bus sub-brand used by various Stagecoach bus subsidiaries in the United Kingdom.
Stagecoach Gold (originally Goldline) was launched in 2007 and was designed to attract more middle-class passengers to choose bus travel as a method of transport as well as to reward passengers on some busy and popular routes.
Stagecoach West currently runs the most Stagecoach Gold routes, nine, as of August 2022. Stagecoach South Wales owns the largest number of Stagecoach Gold branded vehicles with 76 in its fleet as of November 2019
The Goldline brand was introduced to try to win more middle-class motorists to bus services. It was initially trialled in two areas, Perth and Warwick from November 2007, both on routes which received kick-start funding from the government to help establish the routes. Stagecoach East Scotland invested £300,000 to demonstrate the idea to politicians.
Goldline routes have a luxury specification. Buses have hand-stitched leather seats, metallic paint, special flooring and free WiFi. Drivers wear special uniform and there is a Goldline customer charter
In February 2009 the service was expanded to Aldershot and in September 2009 to Cheltenham and Gloucester on route 94. At this stage the brand name changed from Goldline to Stagecoach Gold, as well as the introduction of a new livery with brighter swoops added, as opposed to the previous gold and blue only livery. The reason behind the name change was that Translink had the rights to the Goldline name, using it on their Ulsterbus coach services, and Stagecoach had to pay Translink a royalty
As of 2016, all brand new Stagecoach buses, including non-gold vehicles, come equipped with high back leather seats, USB charging facilities and many with free onboard Wi-Fi. Subsequently, this means that many of Stagecoach's new non-gold vehicles are now at the same specification as the Gold branded vehicles. As a result, some non-gold routes now have higher specification vehicles

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2T8T - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood until September 2006.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
In spite of the APT's troubled history, the design was highly influential and directly inspired other high speed trains such as the Pendolino. The considerable work on electrification that was carried out hand-in-hand with APT was put to good use with newer non-tilting designs like the British Rail Class 91. The APT's tilt system was returned to the WCML on the British Rail Class 390, based on the Fiat Ferroviaria tilting train design and built by Alstom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2GT - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0WRHH - Bolton Interchange is a transport interchange combining Bolton railway station and Bolton Bus Station in the town of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. The station is located on the Manchester to Preston line and the Ribble Valley line, and is managed by Northern Trains. The station is 11+1⁄4 miles (18.1 km) north west of Manchester Piccadilly. Ticket gates have been in operation at the station since 2016.
The railway station was originally named Bolton Trinity Street to differentiate it from nearby Bolton Great Moor Street station which closed in 1954. The station was also known as Bridgeman Street Station and Bradford Square Station.
From the railway station, there are frequent services to Manchester Victoria, Manchester Piccadilly, Clitheroe via Blackburn, Wigan North Western, and Preston. Services operating to Victoria and Piccadilly operate through and terminate at other regional stations, such as Manchester Airport and Stalybridge. There is 1 train per weekday from Southport to Leeds. There is no return service.
The entrance and ticket office are at street level, at which there is a footbridge to the bus station and a taxi rank. A walkway leads to the platforms which are in a cutting. The main island platform has a buffet. The original main station building was demolished in the 1980s, but the Victorian buildings survive on the platforms. The clock tower was dismantled and rebuilt next to the new station.
Several bus companies provide a comprehensive route network of services around Bolton and the surrounding areas, with some subsidised on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester: Arriva North West, Stagecoach Manchester, Stagecoach Merseyside & South Lancashire, Tyrers, Diamond Bus North West, Blackburn Bus Company, Vision Bus, and Rosso.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR71 - Stirling railway station is a railway station located in Stirling, Scotland. It is located on the former Caledonian Railway main line between Glasgow and Perth. It is the junction for the branch line to Alloa and Dunfermline via Kincardine and is also served by trains on the Edinburgh to Dunblane Line and long-distance services to Dundee and Aberdeen and to Inverness via the Highland Main Line.
The station building was constructed in 1915 by James Miller, and is listed by Historic Environment Scotland as a Category A listed building. His design continues the circular spaces and flowing curves of his celebrated Wemyss Bay station.
The station houses a Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) from the British Transport Police. Currently two officers work from Stirling and cover Stirling, Alloa, Bridge of Allan, Camelon, Dunblane, Falkirk High, Falkirk Grahamston and Larbert.
The Stirling Area Command of the Forth Valley Division of Police Scotland cover the territorial area the Stirling NPT cover and will assist when the BTP officers are not available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY91C - The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is an automated light metro system primarily serving the redeveloped Docklands area of London and providing a direct connection between London's two major financial districts, Canary Wharf and the City of London. First opened on 31 August 1987, the DLR has been extended multiple times, giving a total route length of 38 km (24 miles). Lines now reach north to Stratford, south to Lewisham, west to Tower Gateway and Bank in the City of London financial district, and east to Beckton, London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. Further extensions are being considered.
Normal operations are automated, so there is minimal staffing on the 149 trains (which have no driving cabs) and at major interchange stations
the four below-ground stations are staffed, to comply with underground station health and safety regulations.
The DLR is currently operated by franchisee KeolisAmey Docklands for Transport for London (TfL). Passenger numbers have increased as the network has expanded since its launch. In the financial year 2019/20, there were 116.8 million passenger journeys.

Today's Moor Street station is a combination of the original station, opened in 1909 by the Great Western Railway as a terminus for local trains, and a newer Moor Street station with through platforms, a short distance from the original, which opened in 1987, replacing the original. The two were combined into one station in 2002, when the original was reopened and restored, and the newer station rebuilt in matching style.
Moor Street has become more important in recent years
two of the original terminus platforms were reopened in 2010, and the station is now the terminus of many Chiltern Railways services from London Marylebone, as well as being an important stop for local services on the Snow Hill Lines. It is now the second busiest railway station in Birmingham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA01 - The Wirral line is one of two commuter railway lines operated by Merseyrail and centred on Merseyside, England, the other being the Northern line. A third line of the Merseyrail network, the City Line, is not operated by the Merseyrail train operating company, though it also receives funding from Merseytravel, the passenger transport executive for Merseyside.
The Wirral line connects Liverpool to the Wirral Peninsula via the Mersey Railway Tunnel, with branches to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. Beneath Liverpool, the line follows a clockwise circular route in a single-track tunnel called the Loop, built in the early 1970s.
The line was created by the amalgamation of several historic railways, and has carried its present name since the opening of the Merseyrail network by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 October 1978 during the British Rail period. The Wirral line is fully electrified with a DC third rail, and has existed in its current form since May 1994 with the start of electric services to Ellesmere Port. A total of 34 stations are served, with connections available to mainline services at Liverpool Lime Street and Chester. The line also connects with the Northern Line of the Merseyrail network at Liverpool Central and Moorfields.

Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth £13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P53BTN - The Glasgow Subway is an underground metro line in Glasgow, Scotland. Opened on 14 December 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is the only heavy rail underground metro system in the United Kingdom outside London, and also the only one in the United Kingdom which operates completely underground. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its twin circular lines were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway. It was so called when taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the Glasgow Underground in 1936. Despite this rebranding, many Glaswegians continued to refer to the network as the Subway. In 2003 the name Subway was officially readopted by its operator, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). A £40,000 study examining the feasibility of an expansion into the city's south side is in progress.
The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow
that distinction belongs to a 3.1 mi (5.0 km) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1863, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a sub-surface tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway.
The Subway runs from 06:30 to 23:40 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 to 18:12 on Sunday.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM99TA - In 2002, Virgin Trains in the UK began operating custom-designed Pendolino trains known as the Class 390 on its West Coast Main Line (WCML) franchise. The 53 9-car trains were constructed by Alstom and are leased by Virgin Trains from Angel Trains.
Owing to the failure of the WCML upgrade to provide in-cab signalling, these units are limited in service to 125 mph (200 km/h) operation rather than their 140 mph (225 km/h) design speed. In 2006, Virgin Trains announced that, over the following three years, they would be examining the possibility of running the trains at 135 mph (215 km/h) through the Trent Valley as part of their new WCML Franchise Proposal.
An Alstom Class 390 Pendolino in Birmingham
The Class 390 Pendolino were maintained by Alstom (West Coast Traincare) under contract to Virgin Trains until 2012. The main maintenance locations are Wembley, Midlands (Oxley, Wolverhampton), Manchester (Longsight) and Glasgow (Polmadie), as well as Liverpool (for minor work only) and several Traincare Points along the line of route (such as Euston and Carlisle). Headquarters for West Coast Traincare moved from the former Metro-Cammell factory at Washwood Heath in Birmingham upon its closure in November 2005 to Manchester Longsight depot with some functions being based at a new office facility at Oxley depot.
In 2008 DfT announced that 31 of the existing 9-car sets would be lengthened to 11 cars to increase capacity. Four new 11-car sets were also to be built. Angel Trains ordered the vehicles from Alstom in September 2008. Virgin Rail Projects has been selected to introduce the new trains. The longer units would require major infrastructure changes to allow stations and depots to accommodate the 11-car units.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ623 - Motherwell railway station serves Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It lies on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), and is served also by Argyle Line trains of the Glasgow suburban railway network. It is the penultimate stop on the northbound WCML before Glasgow. There are four platforms of various length in use at Motherwell. The station is located next to the town's main shopping arcade, Motherwell Shopping Centre.
The current Motherwell station was built to replace an earlier station which was opened by the Caledonian Railway at nearby Orbiston. As Orbiston station was quite some distance from the rapidly expanding Motherwell town centre, the decision was taken to build a station at 'Lesmahagow Junction', the point where the Motherwell Deviation branch of the Caledonian Railway Main Line met the lines to Mossend, Hamilton and Lesmahagow. This new site was conveniently in the heart of the town.
The current station was built by British Rail during the 1970s on the site of the original to coincide with the electrification of the West Coast Main Line. It has four through platforms, crossed by two overbridges with the main buildings being above the level of the line between Platforms 2 and 3. At platform level between Platforms 2 and 3 there is also a Abellio ScotRail traincrew depot, staff car park and an office of the British Transport Police. These are accessible via a gated rampway leading to street level.
Beyond Platform 4 are some electrified sidings used for the stabling of trains overnight. Diagrams are nominally worked so that these units will only stay at Motherwell for one night before returning to their allocated depot.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GGWHB8 - Northern (legal name Arriva Rail North Limited) is a train operating company in Northern England which began operating the Northern franchise on 1 April 2016 and inherited units from the previous operator Northern Rail. A subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains, Northern is the second-largest train franchise in the United Kingdom
its trains call at 528 stations about a quarter of all stations in the country.
Central to franchise commitments will be a £500 million investment in 101 new-built units the diesel Class 195 and electric Class 331. Introduced into service in July 2019, these will be the first new-build trains for the Northern franchise since the introduction of the Class 333 in 2000 with further orders possible if the new units encourage passenger growth and improve passenger satisfaction. The new rolling stock will enable all Pacer trains to be retired by June 2020. Additional commitments include the introduction of Class 769 bi-mode trains in March 2020, retirement of the Class 319s which are to be replaced by upgraded Class 323s by 2021 and 22 additional diesel units by 2022. It is also planned that a franchise sub-brand, known as Northern Connect, will provide inter-urban services between major cities and towns in Northern England, as well as serving a number of major commuting stations.
TransPennine Express (legally known as First Transpennine Express Ltd) , often abbreviated to TPE, is a British train operating company owned by FirstGroup operating the TransPennine Express franchise. It runs regional and intercity rail services between the major cities of Northern England and Scotland.
The franchise operates all its services to and through Manchester covering three main routes. The service provides rail links for major towns and cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy FDNJR0 - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a light rail tram system in Greater Manchester, England. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP Group. In 2015/16, 34.3 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track, segregated from other traffic, often running alongside the roadway or in the central reservation, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system
the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had survived up to Metrolink's creation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H2MCP1 - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate. It is one of the busiest railway stations in London, serving as the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the busier Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, local and regional commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874 as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895 it had the largest number of platforms on any terminal railway station in London. During the First World War, an air raid on the station in 1917 led to 162 deaths. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing, and during the 7 July 2005 bombing seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train just after it had departed from Liverpool Street.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway, and the station today is served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, and is in fare zone 1

Station to Station is the tenth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released by RCA Records in 1976. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station is also notable as the vehicle for Bowie's last great 'character', The Thin White Duke.
The album was recorded after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the cover featured a still from the movie. During the sessions Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and recalls almost nothing of the production.
Musically, Station to Station was a transitional album for Bowie, developing the funk and soul music of his previous release, Young Americans, while presenting a new direction towards synthesisers and motorik rhythms that was influenced by German electronic bands such as Kraftwerk and Neu!.
This trend would culminate in some of his most acclaimed work, the so-called Berlin Trilogy, recorded with Brian Eno in 1977\u201379. Bowie himself has said that Station to Station was 'a plea to come back to Europe for me'. The album\u2019s lyrics, meanwhile, reflected his preoccupations with Nietzsche, Aleister Crowley, mythology and religion.
With its blend of funk and Krautrock, romantic balladry and occultism, Station to Station has been described as 'simultaneously one of Bowie's most accessible albums and his most impenetrable'. Featuring the single 'Golden Years', it made the Top 5 in both the UK and US charts. In 2003, the album was ranked number 323 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
In the early days of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&
MR), the Liverpool terminus was located at Crown Street, in Edge Hill, officially opened in 1830. Construction of a purpose-built station began in October 1833, the land being purchased from Liverpool Corporation for \u00a39000. A tunnel was constructed between Edge Hill and the new station (starting in 1832, prior to station construction), and the station was opened to the public in August 1836, although construction was not completed until the following year.
Because of the steep incline between Lime Street and Edge Hill, trains were stopped at Edge Hill, their locomotives removed, and the passenger carriages taken down by gravity, descent controlled by brakemen. The return journey was achieved by using a stationary engine to haul the carriages up with rope.
Within six years, the rapid growth of the railways meant that the original station needed to be extended, and a plan was made to erect an iron roof similar to that found at Euston station in London, ridge roofs supported by iron columns
however, Richard Turner and William Fairburn submitted a design for a single curved roof, which won the approval of the station committee. The work cost \u00a315,000, and was completed in 1849. A second roof was added in the 1880s.
In 1845 the L&
MR was absorbed by its principal business partner, the Grand Junction Railway (GJR)
the following year the GJR formed part of the London and North Western Railway. The station was one of the first to send mail by train. The North Western Hotel designed by Alfred Waterhouse, was built in front of the station - this still stands, having been converted to accommodation for students of Liverpool John Moores University. At 'the grouping' in 1923, the station passed to the ownership of the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS) railway, and, in 1948, the London Midland Region of British Railways.
Lime Street was part of the first stage of electrification of the West Coast Main Line in 1959. In 1966, the station saw the launch of the first InterCity service.
Lime Street was voted the equal worst of the 20 busiest UK railway stations in a 2007 poll but was voted 'Station of the Year 2010' at the National Rail Awards thanks in part to a recent reburbishment

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6538 - Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC) is an international airport in Ringway, Manchester, England, 7.5 nautical miles (13.9 km
8.6 mi) south-west of Manchester city centre. In 2019, it was the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers and the busiest of those not serving London. The airport comprises three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal, and is the only airport in the UK other than Heathrow Airport to operate two runways over 3,280 yd (2,999 m) in length. Manchester Airport covers an area of 560 hectares (1,400 acres) and has flights to 199 destinations, placing the airport thirteenth globally for total destinations served.
Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport, a name still in local use. In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airport Holdings (trading as MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake. Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and a church at the western edge of the airport.
Future developments include the £800 million Airport City Manchester logistics, manufacturing, office and hotel space next to the airport. Ongoing and future transport improvements include the £290 million Eastern Link relief road, which opened in October 2018. A High Speed 2 station known as Manchester Airport High Speed station, earmarked for opening in 2033, will create a regular sub-ten-minute shuttle service for connecting rail passengers between central Manchester and the Airport while relieving stress on the Styal Line to the Airport from Manchester which has become one of the most congested routes on the National Rail network

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P2X7YP - The Borders Railway connects the city of Edinburgh with Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders. The railway follows most of the alignment of the northern part of the Waverley Route, a former double-track line in southern Scotland and northern England that ran between Edinburgh and Carlisle. That line was controversially closed in 1969, as part of the Beeching cuts, leaving the Borders region without any access to the National Rail network. Following the closure, a campaign to revive the Waverley Route emerged. Discussion on reopening the northern part of the line came to a head during the early 2000s. Following deliberations in the Scottish Parliament, the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006 received Royal Assent in June 2006. The project was renamed the Borders Railway in August 2008, and building works began in November 2012. Passenger service on the line began on 6 September 2015, whilst an official opening by Queen Elizabeth II took place on 9 September.
The railway was rebuilt as a non-electrified, largely single-track line. Several surviving Waverley Route structures, including viaducts and tunnels, were rehabilitated and reused for the reopened railway. Passenger services run half-hourly on weekdays until 20:00, and hourly until 23:54 and on Sundays. The timetable also allows charter train promoters to run special excursion services, and for the weeks following the line opening scheduled steam trains were run.

The second-generation Eclipse 2 was launched in 2008, followed by the third-generation Eclipse 3 in 2015. The Eclipse, and its sister design the Solar, were named for a solar eclipse which was visible in the UK in 1999, the year of its introduction.
The Eclipse was launched in 1999 on Volvo B7L chassis and, in 2003, the body was made available on the more popular Volvo B7RLE chassis. A coach version, the Eclipse SchoolRun, was later launched on high floor Volvo B7R chassis. In November 2008, Wright unveiled the Eclipse 2 at that year's Euro Bus Expo, with front and rear ends facelifted to match the Wright StreetCar. In 2015, the Eclipse 3 was launched on Volvo B8RLE chassis, the successor to the B7RLE. Production of the Eclipse has been suspended as Wrightbus entered administration in September 2019.
Over 2,100 Eclipses were built, with FirstGroup the largest customer. A double-decker version of the Eclipse is also available, known as the Wright Eclipse Gemini, and formerly also an articulated version, the Wright Eclipse Fusion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2H0 - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G4 - Passengers at Crewe station now have access to a new waiting room, specifically designed to offer those with hidden disabilities a safe and calm environment.
The Calm Corner is the first of its kind on the rail network. It features the use of grey and green colours in order to give a calming effect, a living wall and plants to complement the colour scheme, specially designed furniture for comfort and relaxation, a child's play table, LED rope lighting that can change brightness to suit all.
It also has screens with old images of Crewe station and town centre to help trigger memories for those suffering from dementia and has a rail point Totem offering helpful advice (EG train and station layout).
It was brought to life through the work of train operators at the station, Network Rail and advice from a number of partner charities.
The idea was first suggested by work experience student, Megan Hughes, who used her own experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome as inspiration for the project.
Passengers using the waiting room can have access to the same support and passenger information they would get elsewhere on the station. However, it will be with the addition of a special totem screen, offering helpful advice such as train times, onward travel information and station layout.
Through ongoing work with Alzheimer's Society, London Northwestern Railway is committed to improving the experience for passengers living with dementia, to help support independent living through the use of the rail network.
The train operator is now working on initiatives to improve staff training as well as implementing small changes at stations that will make a big difference to the experience for passengers.
The memory corner' has been designed to help trigger memories for those who have used Crewe station for many years using a collection of historic photos of the station.
It is hoped this collection can grow, with contributions from passengers, families and other supporters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AJRRHJ - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that began operating the West Coast Partnership franchise on 8 December 2019. It replaced Virgin Trains, which had operated the franchise since 1997.
In November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that the InterCity West Coast franchise would be superseded by the West Coast Partnership (WCP), which would include operating High Speed 2 (HS2) services from 2026.
The DfT required that bidders have experience in high-speed trains and infrastructure, hence all partnered with an existing high-speed operator. In June 2017, the DfT announced that three consortia had been shortlisted to bid for the franchise:
FirstGroup (70%) / Trenitalia (30%)
MTR Corporation (75%) / Guangshen Railway Company (25%)
Stagecoach (50%) / SNCF (30%) / Virgin Group (20%)
In August 2019 the DfT awarded the franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium with Avanti West Coast to commence operations on 8 December 2019. Some uncertainty remains as the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry into the award of the franchise following a referral from the European Commission
Avanti West Coast initially operates the same services as Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line. When High Speed 2 opens, it will also operate these services.

Railway carriages, platforms and station approaches are everyday public spaces where national transport policy becomes visible in delays, rolling stock, staffing, safety, accessibility and passenger comfort. The scene suits transport features on regional connectivity, rail investment, commuting, city-region economies and the difference between headline infrastructure schemes and ordinary journeys. The location detail, Liverpool, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include railway station, passenger rail, train travel and public transport, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ68T - Passengers crowd a ScotRail train and platform at Glasgow Central Station, Glasgow G1 3SL, illustrating peak-time congestion and the everyday pressures of rail commuting in Scotland's busiest transport hub. The image shows a dense flow of people boarding and alighting from a modern ScotRail carriage beneath the station's historic iron and glass roof.
Glasgow Central handles some of the highest passenger volumes in the Scottish rail network, serving long-distance intercity services as well as heavily used commuter routes across the Central Belt. During peak periods, platforms and carriages can become severely crowded, reflecting sustained demand for rail travel linked to employment patterns, housing location and urban concentration.
Since ScotRail's return to public ownership in 2022, issues such as capacity, reliability, rolling stock availability and timetable resilience have remained central to political and media debate. Supporters of public control argue that long-term planning and social value should take precedence, while critics highlight ongoing challenges faced by daily commuters, including overcrowding and service disruption.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate discussions around commuter experience, transport investment, public service delivery and the limits of existing rail infrastructure. The visible mix of ages, workwear and shopping bags emphasises the role of rail as an essential, everyday service rather than a discretionary mode of travel.
Photographed at platform level with strong contextual detail, the image carries high editorial value for coverage of commuting pressures, public transport policy, rail reform and the lived experience of passengers in Scotland's urban centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P2X7YN - The Borders Railway connects the city of Edinburgh with Galashiels and Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders.

Intended as a short-term solution to a shortage of rolling stock (with a lifespan of no more than 20 years), as of 2018 many Pacer railbuses are still in use.
The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations require that all public passenger trains must be accessible to disabled people by 2020. Only one Pacer (the modernised 144e) currently meets this requirement, and the remainder will therefore need to be withdrawn by that date unless they receive an extensive refurbishment. Porterbrook, which owns the Class 143 and Class 144 fleets, has proposed such a refurbishment for the rest of the fleet, while Angel Trains, which owns the Class 142 fleet, does not see such a refurbishment as a viable option
