Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F1P47E - South Asian dhol drummers identified as Dhol Beats perform in bright summer sunshine during Stockton Heath Walking Day on Saturday 11 July 2026 in Warrington, Cheshire. Wearing pale green shirts and purple shoulder sashes, the musicians play large double-sided barrel drums with wooden sticks. Their movement and powerful percussion bring energy, rhythm and a multicultural character to the traditional village procession.
The group is pictured crossing Victoria Square beside Stockton Heath Police Station, the red-brick Arts and Crafts building behind them. Opened in 1912 as a combined police station, magistrates' court and constables' accommodation, it is now Grade II listed. Shaped gables, sandstone detailing, tall chimneys and a distinctive corner turret provide a historic backdrop to the performance. Traffic lights, direction signs, barriers and spectators place the musicians within the closed public highway.
The dhol is a double-headed drum associated particularly with Punjab and widely used in Punjabi folk music, bhangra, weddings, festivals and celebratory processions. Its loud carrying beat suits outdoor performance, where several players create interlocking rhythms and physical impact. Including South Asian musicians within Walking Day shows how a long-established custom can retain its faith and community roots while becoming more representative of modern Warrington.
Stockton Heath Walking Day is an annual walk of witness involving churches, schools, community organisations, musicians and residents. The 2026 event had faced possible cancellation because of rising costs, reduced official support and the need for volunteers, but community backing enabled it to proceed. Hundreds attended in hot sunny weather, supporting a tradition within the wider Walking Day culture of Warrington and Cheshire communities. The photograph captures celebration, cultural diversity, local heritage and the continuation of a public event through volunteer effort.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F1T9TY - Pupils, families and representatives of St Thomas' Church of England Primary School take part in Stockton Heath Walking Day in Warrington, Cheshire, on Saturday 11 July 2026. A clergyman wearing white ceremonial robes and a patterned stole walks at the front of the group, accompanied by children carrying the school's traditional blue and gold banner and a handmade placard decorated with colourful lettering.
Crowds of spectators line both sides of the sunny residential street as the procession moves through Stockton Heath. Children, parents, school staff, church members and local volunteers participate in the parade, while stewards in high-visibility clothing help manage the route. A Union flag flies beside the red-brick buildings in the background, adding to the civic and ceremonial character of the occasion.
Stockton Heath Walking Day is part of a distinctive religious and community tradition found particularly across Warrington and other towns in north-west England. Local churches, schools and congregations process together through the village, often carrying banners, crosses and floral displays. The event combines Christian witness with a wider family celebration, attracting generations of residents who gather along the route to greet participants.
The 2026 procession took place on 11 July, with road closures operating during the afternoon and a full contingent of local churches and schools expected to participate. St Thomas' Church, situated at the junction of London Road and Ellesmere Road, has longstanding links with the nearby primary school on Parkgate Road. The school describes this relationship as an important part of its Christian identity and community life.
The photograph records children actively participating in local heritage rather than merely watching it. The school banner, clergy robes, handmade sign, summer clothing and dense roadside audience illustrate how historic faith traditions continue to function as inclusive public events

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ETN539 - Stubcross Junior Band marches along Church Lane during Grappenhall Walking Day in Warrington, Cheshire, on Saturday 20 June 2026. Young musicians wearing white shirts and black trousers carry brass instruments as they approach the entrance to Grappenhall St Wilfrid's Church of England Primary School. A large tuba, euphoniums, cornets and other instruments are visible, while dancers in green costumes perform ahead of the band and spectators line both sides of the road.
The photograph looks towards the square tower of St Wilfrid's Church, rising above trees and rooftops in the distance. The church and primary school stand only a few hundred yards apart and are closely connected through worship, education and village life. Walking Day is organised around the church and school community, with participants processing through Grappenhall before returning to the school field for the accompanying summer fair.
The image captures the energetic final section of the route as the band enters the school grounds. Pollarded trees, a sandstone boundary wall, parked vehicles and mature summer foliage frame the musicians, while June sunshine creates patterned shadows across Church Lane. Families, children and local residents watch from the pavement, contributing to the lively atmosphere of the community occasion.
Walking Days remain a distinctive part of cultural and religious life in Warrington and Cheshire communities. They combine a public Christian Walk of Witness with music, youth participation, banners, dancing and local celebration. This documentary scene records young performers playing an active role in Grappenhall's annual tradition and illustrates brass band culture, school involvement, intergenerational participation, community identity and the continuing use of village streets for a summer gathering. It is also a useful editorial image of youth music education, public performance, ceremonial procession and traditional community life in north-west England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRNM1 - A tattooed female fire performer entertains crowds at Warrington Pride 2026, breathing a dramatic plume of flame while holding a second burning torch. She wears a vivid fringed costume in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, echoing the colours of the LGBTQ+ Pride flag. Her bright red hair, expressive pose and visible body art add to the theatrical character of the performance. A Warrington Pride banner stands behind her beside the Cookhouse outdoor seating at Time Square, firmly locating the scene within the town-centre celebration.
Warrington Pride took place on Saturday 13 June 2026, bringing a programme of performances, community activity and a parade into central Warrington. Participants gathered at Time Square before the parade travelled through the town centre towards Golden Square and Old Market Square. The event celebrated Warrington's LGBTQIA+ community and welcomed residents, visitors, charities, businesses, community groups and allies.
The photograph captures live street entertainment, Pride visibility and the use of public space for an inclusive community festival. Fire eating is a specialist circus and sideshow performance involving controlled flames, trained technique and strict safety measures. The moment shown creates a striking contrast between the orange fire, rainbow costume and brick architecture of the regenerated Time Square development.
This image is suitable for editorial coverage of LGBTQ+ rights, Pride Month, lesbian and gay visibility, transgender and non-binary inclusion, equality, diversity, community cohesion, public festivals, female performers, tattoo culture, circus skills, town-centre events and visitor attractions. It also reflects the celebratory and defiant role of Pride at a time when LGBTQ+ communities continue to campaign against discrimination and for equal treatment, safety and public acceptance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTRJ - Steam traction engine O.H.M.S., registration MA7892, travels through Lymm village centre in Warrington, Cheshire, towing a passenger trailer during the December Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival. The preserved road steam vehicle is shown in steam with smoke rising from its chimney, polished red and black paintwork, large spoked wheels, brass detail, festive wreath decoration and a trailer carrying visitors through the historic village streets. Lymm Dickensian is a long-running volunteer-led community Christmas event, begun in 1985 and centred on Victorian dress, stalls, street entertainment, Santa activities, festive food, processions and seasonal atmosphere. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of heritage transport, steam traction engines, vintage vehicles, Christmas fairs, village festivals, community events, Cheshire tourism, Warrington heritage, industrial history, road steam preservation and family days out. Steam traction engines and road locomotives were once practical working machines used for haulage, agricultural tasks, showmen's work and local industry, but today they survive mainly through preservation societies, rallies, transport days and enthusiast owners. The photograph captures the pleasure and spectacle of a full-size steam vehicle operating slowly in a village setting, with wet roads, winter clothing, passengers, event barriers and town-centre buildings adding a documentary seasonal feel. It can support stories about Lymm's festive traditions, volunteer event organisation, road closures, historic transport displays, traction engine preservation, public nostalgia, engineering heritage, Christmas parades and the continuing popularity of steam power at local events. The O.H.M.S. name and MA7892 registration are visible on the engine front, although the exact maker and build history should be checked from owner or rally programme notes before making detailed claims about manufacturer or date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M6E - Llandudno Pier is a Grade II* listed pier in the seaside resort of Llandudno, North Wales, United Kingdom. At 2,295 feet (700 m), the pier is the longest in Wales and the fifth longest in England and Wales. In 2005, was voted Pier of the Year 2005 by the members of the National Piers Society.
At the end of the pier is a deep-water landing stage, completely rebuilt for the third time in 1969, which is used by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for occasional excursions to Douglas, Isle of Man, and for an annual visit of the PS Waverley or the MV Balmoral preserved steamers. The June 2007 sailings of the Balmoral were rescheduled to start at Menai Bridge Pier, after it emerged that Llandudno Pier's Landing Stage was no longer safe to use. The Landing Stage was rebuilt in 2012 and the MV Balmoral called there, the first ship since 2006, on 2 July 2015. In the present day the landing stage is no longer used for steamers but has its use as a platform for anglers to fish off the end of the pier and is not accessible to the general public.
Located on the coast of North Wales between Bangor and Colwyn Bay, the pier is very unusual in that it has two entrances, one on the promenade at North Parade and the other, the original entrance, on Happy Valley Road (Which is no longer used and is locked permanently) Between the two entrances is the Grand Hotel.
The pier had its origins in a much shorter pier of just 242 feet (74 m) built on 16 wooden piles, opened in 1858 by the St George's Harbour and Railway Company
The present pier was designed by civil engineers Sir James William Brunlees (1816-92, knighted 1886) and Alexander McKerrow (1837-1920) and built by the contractor John Dixon for the Llandudno Pier Company. After the original designs were approved on 29 May 1876 by Parliament, the town's Improvement Commissioners and the Mostyn Estate, revised designs for the ornamental ironwork and elaborate kiosks were worked on by the architects Charles Henry Driver

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPEX - This image shows members of the Warrington Irish community taking part in a St Patrick's Day procession along Bridge Street in Warrington town centre in March 2023. Participants of all ages are seen walking together, many dressed in green and carrying the Irish tricolour, reflecting Irish national identity and cultural pride.
St Patrick's Day is widely celebrated across the UK, particularly in towns and cities with established Irish communities. Events such as this provide an opportunity for cultural expression, community visibility, and shared celebration, while also attracting wider public participation and support.
The procession moves through a busy shopping street, with local businesses and passers-by visible along the route, highlighting how Irish cultural celebrations are integrated into everyday town-centre life. The mix of families, older residents, and younger participants reflects the intergenerational nature of the Irish community in Warrington.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents contemporary Irish diaspora culture in Britain and is well suited for editorial use covering St Patrick's Day, community cohesion, migration history, local identity, and multicultural life in English towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RHH6HR - Traditionally, carnival season in Mainz begins on November 11 at 11:11, and continues through Ash Wednesday. However, the event peaks in February or March in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday.
During the 19th century celebrants began using the carnival as an opportunity to mock the military forces occupying the city's fortress. The uniforms of the carnival guards are still reminders of the uniforms of the Austrian, Prussian, and French troops which were present in the town between 1792 and 1866. Others, like the Landsknecht uniform of the Weisenauer Burggrafengarde trace their lineage as far back as the middle-ages. Uniform parts of the electoral troops are also present. The guards, who spoof military habits and oaths, have a big role in the street carnival, making up large portions of the parades. The Mainzer Rosenmontagszug is highly renowned among the parades. It had been recorded since 1910 on film, and is often broadcast live nationwide. It is less formal than many parades, as celebrants can and often do join in to walk the parade route for a brief time. Marchers are often very informal about their roles, sometimes drinking beer as they ride parade floats.
Political commentary and caricature have become a notable part of the Mainz carnival, and especially of its parades. For example, floats during one parade in the late 1980s showed Uncle Sam and a Russian soldier climbing out of suits of armor, and portrayed Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in a bathtub.
The battle cry of the Mainz carnival, Helau, originates from Düsseldorf and was introduced in 1938 in Mainz

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M3JBMF - Shortly before midday on Saturday, 20 March 1993, The Samaritans in Liverpool received a bomb warning by telephone. According to police, the caller said only that a bomb had been planted outside a Boots shop. Merseyside Police sent officers to branches of Boots in Liverpool and warned the Cheshire Constabulary, who patrolled nearby Warrington. About 30 minutes later, at about 12:25, two bombs exploded on Bridge Street in Warrington, about 100 yards (90 m) apart. The blasts happened within a minute of each other. One exploded outside Boots and McDonald's, and one outside the Argos catalogue store. The area was crowded with shoppers. Witnesses said that shoppers fled from the first explosion into the path of the second. It was later found that the bombs had been placed inside cast-iron litter bins, causing large amounts of shrapnel. Buses were organised to ferry people away from the scene and 20 paramedics and crews from 17 ambulances were sent to deal with the aftermath.
Three-year-old Johnathan Ball died at the scene. He had been in town with his babysitter, shopping for a Mother's Day card. The second victim, 12-year-old Tim Parry, was gravely wounded. He died on 25 March 1993 when his life support machine was switched off, after tests had found only minimal brain activity. Another 54 people were injured, four of them seriously. One of the survivors, 32-year-old Bronwen Vickers, the mother of two young daughters, had to have a leg amputated, and died just over a year later from cancer.
The Provisional IRA issued a statement the day after the bombing, acknowledging its involvement but saying:
Responsibility for the tragic and deeply regrettable death and injuries caused in Warrington yesterday lies squarely at the door of those in the British authorities who deliberately failed to act on precise and adequate warnings
A day later, an IRA spokesman said that two precise warnings had been given in adequate time, one to the Samaritans and one to Merseyside Police

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P04C - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ˜gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ˜electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A9C - Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground off Whitehall in central London. It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour, which commemorates the monarch's official birthday, and the Beating Retreat.
Horse Guards Parade was formerly the site of the Palace of Whitehall's tiltyard, where tournaments (including jousting) were held in the time of Henry VIII. It was also the scene of annual celebrations of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth I. The area has been used for a variety of reviews, parades and other ceremonies since the 17th century.
The adjacent Horse Guards building was once the Headquarters of the British Army. The Duke of Wellington was based in Horse Guards when he was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. The current General Officer Commanding London District still occupies the same office and uses the same desk. Wellington also had living quarters within the building, which today are used as offices
The parade ground is open on the west side, where it faces Horse Guards Road and St James's Park. It is enclosed to the north by the Admiralty Citadel and the Admiralty Extension building, to the east by Admiralty House, William Kent's Horse Guards (formerly the headquarters of the British Army) and the rear of Dover House (home of the Scotland Office), and to the south by Kent's Treasury building (now used by the Cabinet Office), garden walls of 10 Downing Street (the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister) and Mountbatten Green before the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's west wing. Access to the south side is restricted for national security.
On the east side, Horse Guards Parade is normally accessible to the public from Whitehall through the arches of Horse Guards
A number of military monuments and trophies ring the outside of the parade ground, including:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07AA2 - Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground off Whitehall in central London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JCM8JY - Appleton Thorn village is the only village in England where the ˜Bawming of the Thorn' ceremony takes place on the third Saturday of June each year.
The thorn tree, which stands beside the church, is believed to be an offshoot of the Glastonbury thorn, which grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea. Adam de Dutton, a knight of the Crusades and local landowner, brought it to Appleton.
Bawming, which means, decorating the tree with flowers and ribbons , has local children dancing and singing the Bawming song.
Not only does this day offer the local community something special to celebrate, but it also forms one of the main sources of fund raising for local projects that aid the community. In the past Bawming has been able to support:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEJ - River of Life, opened officially 14th November 1996 by her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent with Warrington Borough Council
The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan.
Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD5E - King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Formally named The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge, the college lies on the River Cam and faces out onto King's Parade in the centre of the city.
King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. However, the King's plans for the college were disrupted by the Wars of the Roses and resultant scarcity of funds, and his eventual deposition. Little progress was made on the project until in 1508 Henry VII began to take an interest in the college, most likely as a political move to legitimise his new position. The building of the college's chapel, begun in 1446, was finally finished in 1544 during the reign of Henry VIII.
King's College Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late Gothic English architecture. It has the world's largest fan-vault, and the chapel's stained-glass windows and wooden chancel screen are considered some of the finest from their era.
The building is seen as emblematic of Cambridge. The chapel's choir, composed of male students at King's and choristers from the nearby King's College School, is one of the most accomplished and renowned in the world. Every year on Christmas Eve the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (a service devised specifically for King's by college dean Eric Milner-White) is broadcast from the chapel to millions of listeners worldwide

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4939401900 - 'A Walk On The Wild Side - 'Lou Reed' - Play this track here.
\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Walk on the Wild Side' is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 David Bowie produced second solo album Transformer. It namechecks taboo topics such as transsexuality, drugs, male prostitutes and oral sex and the term 'colored' to refer to African Americans, a term which was still common in that era.
The lyrics tell of a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, and refers to several of the regular 'superstars' at Andy Warhol's New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). Candy Darling was also the subject of Reed's song 'Candy Says'.
The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood. It has been heavily covered by Echo and the Bunnymen and The Strokes to name a few.
I picked up on Reed after an introduction to the VU.
