Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYYY - A UK stock-photo/gotonysmith-Polling.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>polling station entrance is shown inside a public building, with clear election notices giving opening times of 7.00am to 10.00pm, a Way Out arrow, guidance for tellers and a warning sign saying not to use mobile phones. The image is a useful editorial stock photograph for stories about local elections, parliamentary elections, polling day, voter information, electoral administration, democracy, civic participation and the practical process of voting in person. The Electoral Commission says voters must go to their allocated polling station, usually shown on their poll card, and GOV.UK also explains that people can only vote at the polling station location on their card, although they do not need to take the card with them. The visible opening-times notice reflects the standard UK polling hours of 7am to 10pm, with voters already in a queue at 10pm normally still entitled to vote. The image can illustrate the ordinary, functional nature of British elections, where schools, community halls, libraries and other local buildings are temporarily turned into polling places. It is commercially useful for articles on election day, local councils, general elections, voter ID, turnout, democracy, polling station staffing, tellers, campaign volunteers, ballot secrecy, mobile phone restrictions, accessibility and public trust in the electoral process. The signs also show the controlled environment around voting, with information for voters and campaign tellers, privacy expectations and directional signage helping people move through the station. As a documentary stock image, it records the practical infrastructure of democracy rather than party politics, making it suitable for neutral coverage of voting rules, election administration, democratic participation and public service delivery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXX289 - Taken on 25 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Season Ticket season 1981/82, Manchester City Football club - Kippax St - Maine Road. The location is Kippax St, Manchester, England, UK, M14 7WE. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains aged paper, printed match details and period typography, making the football memorabilia visually authentic. The Maine Road season-ticket reference points to Manchester City before the Premier League era, when the Kippax was central to matchday identity and football support was documented through simple paper tickets. It would work for sport-history features, football nostalgia, fan culture, memorabilia collecting, stadium stories, matchday economics and the growth of football as a global commercial product. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Manchester, city, centre, Manchester City, MCFC, football, club, Kippax, Maine Road, history, historic, heritage, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. This makes the image useful for comparison pieces, then-and-now features, local news, regeneration stories and plain-English explainers aimed at a general audience. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, publ.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RY696F - This image shows a heavily weathered enamel advertising sign for The Sunday People newspaper, a long-running British Sunday tabloid. The sign features prominent typography, a Union flag motif, and historic promotional text referencing Saturday's News & Sport, reflecting mid-twentieth-century newspaper marketing aimed at a mass readership. Extensive rusting, peeling enamel, and surface corrosion indicate prolonged outdoor exposure and age.
Enamel signs such as this were once a common feature of streets, newsagents, railway stations, and industrial buildings across Britain, serving as durable advertising for popular newspapers and consumer brands. The Sunday People, first published in 1881, positioned itself as a widely read working-class paper, combining news, sport, and human-interest stories, and became part of the fabric of British popular culture throughout the twentieth century.
The deteriorated condition of the sign adds strong visual interest, highlighting themes of industrial decline, nostalgia, and the changing nature of print media. The Union flag imagery reinforces associations with national identity and British popular press history. This image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to newspaper history, British media, vintage advertising, urban decay, heritage signage, nostalgia, and cultural studies of twentieth-century Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYF - This image shows an off-peak day return railway ticket and collection receipt laid over a printed York to Liverpool timetable, illustrating everyday UK rail travel and fare systems. The ticket details include journey validity, fare value, class of travel, and date, reflecting the complexity of British rail ticketing and pricing structures.
Printed timetables and paper tickets remain part of the passenger experience despite the growth of mobile and digital ticketing. The combination of timetable pages and ticket documentation highlights themes of public transport usage, travel planning, and intercity rail connections across northern England, including routes via Warrington.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK transport, rail policy, commuting, travel costs, public services, and mobility, as well as conceptual illustrations of journeys, schedules, and everyday travel administration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

On 11 March 2013, Tyler was the first Tunisian woman to post a photograph of herself nude from the waist up on Facebook, with the phrase My body is mine and not the source of anybody's honour in Arabic. The photo was seen as scandalous and evoked strong controversies within Tunisian society comparable to the nude self-portraits of the Egyptian Aliaa Magda Elmahdy two years earlier. On 16 March, the popular talk host Naoufel Ouertani invited her to his show on Ettounsiya where she appeared disguised by pixellation. She explained that it was not for sexual reasons that she appeared topless but to call out their demands for the women's liberation in a patriarchal society.
Imam Adel Almi issued a fatwa for her to be punished with 100 lashes and stoned to death.
Imprisonment
On 19 May 2013 she painted the name FEMEN on a cemetery wall in Kairouan, to protest against the annual congress of Salafi party Ansar al-Sharia. She was arrested and brought to Messaadine jail in Sousse. She faced up to 1 year in prison
Tyler's father, the medical doctor Mounir Sbouï, told the French newspaper Libération in an interview that his daughter made a mistake but didn't commit a crime. The long time militant and campaigner of the socialist Democratic Forum for Labour and Liberties, who had left the party only after it joined the Troika government, said he was even proud of his daughter who defended her ideas and who also brought him to reconcile with his own values making him understand that one needs to be active.
Maryam Namazie interviews Amina and Aliaa Elmahdy (8 March 2014).
International protests followed for her release from detention. On 29 May 2013, three FEMEN members held topless protest in front of the Tunis court to demand her release while shouting Free Amina! and A women's spring is coming!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JGHW - The Pier Head (properly, George's Pier Head) is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It was part of the former Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004, but revoked in 2021. As well as a collection of landmark buildings, recreational open space, and a number of memorials, the Pier Head was (and for some traffic still is) the landing site for passenger ships travelling to and from the city.
By the 1890s, the George's Dock, where the Pier Head now is, was essentially redundant. Built in 1771, it was the third dock built in Liverpool, and was too small and too shallow in depth for the commercial ships of the late 19th century. Most of the site was owned by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, set up by Parliament in 1857
a small part of the site still was still held by the Corporation of the City of Liverpool. The board and the corporation had differing priorities, and the former were not inclined to forgo any commercial advantage for the benefit of the latter
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 1998 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the Grade II listed George's Dock Building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG7YAR - How does Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing work?
The dynamic-pricing system has been used in the United Kingdom for recent sales of tickets to Harry Styles, Coldplay, and Blackpink gigs.
A new Ticketmaster pricing system that alters the price of tickets based on demand is being criticised by fans and industry experts.
The dynamic-pricing system has been used in the United Kingdom for recent sales of tickets to Harry Styles, Coldplay, and Blackpink gigs.
It's regularly employed in the United States, where resale is a lot bigger, and touting is much more prevalent, reports the BBC.
Ticketmaster has now said that it is being used in order to try to stop touts, and to give more money back to artists.
Here's everything you need to know about the system, and how it works.
How does Ticketmaster's new demand-based pricing system work?
On the Ticketmaster page for Harry Styles's tour, a notice explains how its new demand-based system works.
It reads: These tickets vary in price driven by demand from fans, similar to airline tickets and hotel rooms.
We give fans an opportunity to safely buy official tickets for the events they love, right up to the date of the show.
This new pricing system means that Ticketmaster does not publicise ticket costs ahead of time, instead, they charge constantly, based on the demand for tickets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KWRJ - The News of the World was a weekly national red top tabloid newspaper published every Sunday in the United Kingdom from 1843 to 2011. It was at one time the world's highest-selling English-language newspaper, and at closure still had one of the highest English-language circulations. It was originally established as a broadsheet by John Browne Bell, who identified crime, sensation and vice as the themes that would sell most copies. The Bells sold to Henry Lascelles Carr in 1891
in 1969 it was bought from the Carrs by Rupert Murdoch's media firm News Limited. Reorganised into News International, a subsidiary of News Corporation, the newspaper was transformed into a tabloid in 1984 and became the Sunday sister paper of The Sun
The News of the World concentrated in particular on celebrity scoops, gossip and populist news. Its somewhat prurient focus on sex scandals gained it the nickname Screws of the World. In its last decade it had a reputation for exposing celebrities' drug use, sexual peccadilloes, or criminal acts, by using insiders and journalists in disguise to provide video or photographic evidence, and covert phone hacking in ongoing police investigations
From 2006, allegations of phone hacking began to engulf the newspaper. These culminated in the revelation on 4 July 2011 that, nearly a decade earlier, a private investigator hired by the newspaper had intercepted the voicemail of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, who was later found murdered.
Amid a public backlash and the withdrawal of advertising, News International announced the closure of the newspaper on 7 July 2011. The scandal deepened when the paper was alleged to have hacked into the phones of families of British service personnel killed in action

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJM1 - Fontaines D.C. are a post-punk rock band from Dublin, Ireland. The band released their debut studio album, Dogrel, on April 12, 2019
Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, Grian Chatten, and Tom Coll met in Dublin while attending music college at British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Liberties, Dublin. They bonded over a common love of poetry and collectively released two collections of poetry, one called Vroom, inspired by the Beat poets (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg) and another called Winding, inspired by Irish poets (Patrick Kavanagh, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats). None of the published poems were translated into songs, but the track Television Screens off their debut Dogrel started out as a poem and was turned into a song.
Lead singer Grian Chatten is half-British (his mother is English and his father is Irish) and was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England but grew up in the County Dublin town of Skerries, Dublin. Coll, Curley, and Deegan are from Ireland “ Mayo, County Mayo, Emyvale in County Monaghan, and Mayo, County Mayo, respectively, and O'Connell grew up in Madrid, Spain.
The band got their name from a character in the movie The Godfather called Johnny Fontane, a singer and movie star portrayed by Al Martino. Fontane was godson of Vito Corleone. They added the initials D.C. when a band in Los Angeles had the same name. The initials D.C. stand for Dublin City

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 “ 18 May 1980) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness and alienation.
Curtis suffered from epilepsy and depression and took his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. His death led to the band's dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.
Despite their short career, Joy Division have exerted a wide-reaching influence. John Bush of AllMusic argues that they became the first band in the post-punk movement by ... emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF69J - The Big Issue is a street newspaper founded by John Bird and Gordon Roddick in September 1991 and published in four continents. The Big Issue is one of the UK's leading social businesses and exists to offer homeless people, or individuals at risk of homelessness, the opportunity to earn a legitimate income, thereby helping them to reintegrate into mainstream society. It is the world's most widely circulated street newspaper
In 1995, The Big Issue Foundation was founded to offer additional support and advice to vendors around issues such as housing, health, personal finance and addiction.
In 2001, the magazine sold nearly 300,000 copies per week. Between 2007 and 2011, the circulation of The Big Issue declined from 167,000 to less than 125,000. Competition between vendors also increased at this time. In January 2012, the magazine was relaunched, with an increased focus on campaigning and political journalism. New columnists were added, including the Premier League footballer Joey Barton, Rachel Johnson, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Samira Ahmed. The cover price was increased.
In 2016, The Big Issue celebrated surpassing 200 million magazine sales.
To become a vendor, one must be homeless or almost homeless, vulnerably housed or marginalised in some way. The Big Issue recognises, however, that for many people, being housed is only the first stage in getting off the streets
therefore, The Big Issue Foundation exists to support vendors in gaining control of their lives by tackling the various issues which lead to homelessness.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN2X - A fortune cookie is a crisp and sugary cookie wafer usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil with a piece of paper inside, a fortune, usually an aphorism, or a vague prophecy. The message inside may also include a Chinese phrase with translation and/or a list of lucky numbers used by some as lottery numbers. Fortune cookies are often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States, Canada and other countries, but they are not Chinese in origin. The exact origin of fortune cookies is unclear, though various immigrant groups in California claim to have popularized them in the early 20th century. They most likely originated from cookies made by Japanese immigrants to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Japanese version did not have the Chinese lucky numbers and was eaten with tea.
Fortune cookies before the early 20th century were all made by hand. The fortune cookie industry changed dramatically after the fortune cookie machine was invented by Shuck Yee from Oakland, California. The machine allowed for mass production of fortune cookies which subsequently allowed the cookies to drop in price to become the novelty and courtesy dessert many Americans are familiar with after their meals at most Chinese restaurants today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ETRXNF - This Project came about as a result of a commission by Essential Edinburgh and was kindly supported by the Prince's Foundation, Edinburgh Unesco City of Literature and the Roxburghe Hotel.
Rose Street is located in Edinburgh's New Town and is a vibrant pedestrianised zone well known for its shops and many pubs which hosted the 'Rose Street Poets' during the 1950's and 1960's.
The poetry displayed within the frame is by poets associated with Rose Street or Edinburgh and will be rotating with the seasons. All motives are papercuts, cut by hand and then enlarged for print onto large vinyl sheets, printed and fitted to the walls by Totem Signs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3884 - Former Scotsman Newspaper offices now a luxury hotel in the heart of Edinburgh
In the 1900's the North Bridge running between the New and Old Town's of Edinburgh was widened and as part of this expansion a 190 foot high tower was built, into which the Scotsman Newspaper moved their offices.
The building cost around £500,000 and after the rest of the North Bridge extension was completed teamed with the Carlton directly opposite, it formed a imposing entrance to the Old Town.
The direct access from Market Street to the building was an ideal distribution outlet for the papers to be packed directly onto the trains at Waverley Station straight from the printing house that took up the entire basement. Across the middle floors of the building which is now home to some of the Scotsman's most luxurious rooms and suites were originally used for the editorial offices. What is today a stunning 2 floor Penthouse suite complete with its own Sauna used to be the Pigeon lofts where the news was sent far and wide across Scotland.
The Scotsman Newspaper was regarded as radical when it was first published but over the years it became Scotland's National Newspaper. It first opened its doors to the locals of Edinburgh for advertising in 1831 and what is today the North Bridge Brasserie was the original reception and trading rooms. With its stunning marble pillars and ornate balcony this room has witnessed much bartering and haggling over advertising costs. Today this stunningly majestic room is home to the Scotsman's Brasserie and bar offering a truly Scottish menu, imaginative cocktails and one of Edinburgh's largest collections of rare whiskeys.
In 2001 the Newspaper moved to their own purpose built offices in Holyrood whilst the stunning building was renovated into The Scotsman Hotel. Now with 56 rooms and 12 suites the hotel retained its originality and quirky features and this, along with the 5 star service we endeavor to deliver offers visitors a unique experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6A8 - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin Mitte,Street art on walls,Germany. The image records Berlin Mitte street art and graffiti, making it useful for editorial features on urban art, alternative tourism, wall culture, counterculture, gentrification, visual satire and layered public space. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and wider editorial needs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6WD - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin Mitte,Street art on walls,Germany- Man with three eyes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CFE7H7 - £3.50 Tesco Clubcard Every Little Helps voucher - Tesco Clubcard (commonly referred to and branded as Clubcard) is the loyalty card of British supermarket chain Tesco.
The Clubcard scheme operates in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and several other countries. As of 2017, there were over 17 million users in the United Kingdom.
History
In 1993, Terry Leahy asked the Tesco marketing team to investigate the potential of loyalty cards. In the past Tesco had run Green Shield Stamps as a promotional tool which rewarded people for visits and spending, but gained no customer information. The initial team researched programmes across the world and developed a proposal which showed that a loyalty card could be very effective. The key change since the days of Green Shield Stamps was the ability to track individual customer behaviour cost-effectively using a magnetic stripe card.
In 1994, Grant Harrison attended a conference where Clive Humby from marketing firm dunnhumby was speaking. Dunnhumby was already working with clients such as Cable & Wireless and BMW, and Harrison approached them to help with the loyalty card project. Successful trials throughout 1994 led to the Tesco board asking Harrison and Humby to present to the annual Board strategy session.
The first response from the board came from Tesco's then-chairman Lord MacLaurin, who said, What scares me about this is that you know more about my customers after three months than I know after 30 years.

New York based DJ Andy Butler (assisted by Kim Ann Foxman) is behind 'Hercules &
Love Affair'. This single 'Blind' featuring guest Antony Hegarty (lead vocalist in Antony &
The Johnsons) and was released March 2008.
Andrew Butler, began his musical career at 15, DJing in a Denver leather bar run by a hostess called Chocolate Thunder Pussy. He then moved to Brooklyn, in order to attend Sarah Lawrence College. According to Butler: 'I’ve been writing songs since childhood. I made music for dance performances in college (where he studied under Corky St. Clair), like a remake of Gino Soccio’s ‘Runaway’ done in the style of Kraftwerk.
I am so glad thats cleared up then!
A new album is apparently immenent, which explains why I have been playing this track recently.
Almost made me go out and buy a triangle, that lead out.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) was founded by Thomas Rhodes Armitage, a successful doctor who suffered from eyesight problems.
In 1868 Dr Armitage founded an organisation known as the British and Foreign Society for Improving Embossed Literature for the Blind. This later became the British and Foreign Blind Association. In 1875 Her Majesty Queen Victoria became the organisation's first patron.
The organisation received a Royal Charter in 1948, and changed its name to Royal National Institute for the Blind in 1953. RNIB's vision is of a world in which blind and partially sighted people enjoy the same rights, freedom, responsibilities and quality of life as people who are fully sighted.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4861768890 - 'The Chad Who Loved Me - 'Mansun' - Play this track here.
?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Mansun were formed in Chester, England in 1995 by Draper and King. The band's foundations were cemented with the addition of Chad, who worked behind the bar at the Fat Cat pub in Chester and they began rehearsing at Crash Rehearsal Studios in Liverpool, where the band would be discovered by a passing A&
R man and offered a publishing contract.
The band were originally called 'Grey Lantern' but changed their name to 'Manson', after the cult leader Charles Manson but were forced to change it due to copyright issues. The band gave several false accounts of this at the time, one being that they were named after The Verve b-side 'A Man Called Sun', and that 'Manson' was simply a spelling mistake which accidentally went through to production. It was reported that Charles Manson had started spelling his name with a 'U', to which Draper joked that perhaps they should sue him.
Early EPs were followed by the critically acclaimed album Attack Of The Grey Lantern which appeared to contain a conceptual storyline - heavily debated by fans - whilst ending with a hidden track (An Open Letter To The Lyrical Trainspotter, previously featured on Three EP) proclaiming sarcastically 'The lyrics aren't supposed to mean that much'. The band's debut LP knocked fellow Parlophone act Blur's 1997 self-titled album from the top spot of the British album chart. Radiohead are quoted as saying, at that year's Q Awards, that the album was 'a real musical achievement'. Draper stated that the lyrics from this era were written whilst when he was a kid and influenced by The Goon Show and Monty Python
------------------------
Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1928. The first edition was printed in Florence, Italy
it could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929).
The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an aristocratic woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of (at the time) unprintable words.
The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Eastwood in Nottinghamshire where he grew up. According to some critics, the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with 'Tiger', a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story.
Lawrence at one time considered calling the novel Tenderness and made significant alterations to the text and story in the process of its composition. It has been published in three different versions.
The story concerns a young married woman, Constance (Lady Chatterley), whose upper-class husband, Clifford Chatterley, has been paralyzed and rendered impotent. Her sexual frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. This novel is about Constance's realization that she cannot live with the mind alone
she must also be alive physically.
Even by chapter three Connie's jerking and twitching runs through her body like restlessness...
Seek it out, tell them I sent you!

No lies, back in the government
No tears, party time is here again
President Gas is up for president
Line up, put your kisses down
Say 'yeah' say 'yes' again
Stand up, there's a head count
President Gas on everything but roller skates
It's sick the price of medicine
Stand up, we'll put you on your feet again
Open up your eyes just to check that you're asleep again
President Gas is President Gas again
He comes in from the left sometimes
He comes in from the right
It's so heavily advertised that he wants you and I
It's a real cowboy set, electric company
Every day is happy days
It's hell without the sin, but
This old track from the The Psychedelic Furs, President Gas usually comes to mind when I am doing my civic duty every three to four years.
The Furs were an act spawned from the British punk rock scene. Originally RKO,' then 'Radio' and for a while 'The Europeans'. Built around singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar. The classic first album was a Steve Lillywhite production.
The band recorded their 1983 album, Forever Now, with producer Todd Rundgren in Woodstock, New York. In 1986 when movie director/writer John Hughes borrowed their song title 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly-recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat' from the 1987 album 'Midnight To Midnight', was to be the Furs' biggest top 40 entry in the US.
The band split in the early 1990s, with the Butler brothers going on to found Love Spit Love. In 2000, 'Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live' was released to plug the gap of the missing live album. In my opinion, the BBC in concert bootlegs of 1982 &
1984 are better encapsulations of the band live. I saw them at the Royal Court in Liverpool that latter year.
A UK reunion tour was pencilled in last year including a manchester academy date, but this was unfortunately cancelled. earlier dates in the USA went ahead and a recording of 17/09/2009 in San Francisco that can be found on the web sounds like a band on top form.
Fingers crossed I may manage to see them again soon!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4545016881 - 'Khan, my friendly local traditional newsagent and tobaconist. He is quite a walk away just over the swing bridge in Latchford village and I sometimes see him on the only day that I occasionally buy a paper, Saturday. It’s usually one with lots of supplements I buy with a bit of a TV and events review guide in it.
Thinking back over ten years or more I used to have three paper shops within 10 minutes walk
two on Knutsford road and Old cantankerous Malcolm Sissins in Lindi Avenue. In fact on originally looking for a house in the area I encountered 'Sissons' on the parade of shops that included a tiny sub-post office, hair salon (Flair, which is currently on the market www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-27655238.h... and small part time doctors surgery.
I walked into his newsagents which was full of untidy piles of paper and often out of date confectionary and he sold me a chocolate bar. On asking where I might buy a sandwich round here, he suggested 'shop next door'. On walking out and into the next door along, Malcolm appeared at the counter and said 'Hello, how can I help?'. A bit surreal to say the least.
Malcolm did have a big toy grotto and fishing supplies section at the back which customers were only allowed to visit on an escorted basis. After moving into Lindi Avenue myself and having regular papers from the shop did I learn some of the eccentricities. As Malcolm got even older he would only open half the shop at once, forcing customers to leave and re-enter by the street, although there was a passage between. School children (of which there could be many from the local primary) would be admitted one at a time. Late payment for delivered papers would incur an instant fine, while his reputation as being a difficult boss made it difficult to get and keep decent paper boys and girls. His biggest crime (noticed by Colin a yorkshireman, a good friend who shamefully I have not seen for yonks since he moved up near Durham) was when buying his boiled sweets loose from jars, Malcolm actually weighed the paper bag too!
Sadly, cantankerous though he was, he is now just a memory as an estimated ten UK local newsagents go under each week. Suburban supermarkets and coffee shops (Starbucks even selling daily papers now in some places) are picking away at their trade. Khan now has a Co-Op over the road, now selling papers too. In a daily Telegraph article, Starbucks denied it had any part to play in the decline in newsagents. A spokesman said: “We’re wholly committed to enhancing each of our customers’ unique Starbucks experiences and the availability of a daily national newspaper adds to that overall experience.”
Although I might use the ATM cash machine in the co-op, I always get my paper at Khan's. That’s where I have my 'Newspaper shop Experience'.
Oh and if you have any tales or experiences from the Sisson era, please leave a comment

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBCH - The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, most notably several generations of public transport ticket machines and the worlds first desktop electronic calculator, the Sumlock ANITA.
History
The company was established in July 1878 in order to acquire the patent rights to an American hand-registering ticket punch that was being used by a number of British tramway companies. By 1884 they had begun development of their own range of ticket printing machines. In 1891 they began supplying ticketing machines for London General Omnibus Company. From then until its demise, Bell Punch would have an unbroken history of supplying successive London bus companies, along with many other bus operators throughout the country.
The first half of the 20th century saw the company expand into different markets, including in cinema and theatre ticketing, horse race totalisator ticket machines, taximeters and mechanical calculators.
In the Second World War the company developed and manufactured a variety of military equipment, including mechanical aircraft navigation computers and naval gunnery sighting and ranging devices.
In 1958 it began development of a desktop electronic calculator, which came to market as the Sumlock ANITA in 1961. The calculator division was established as Sumlock Anita Electronics Ltd in 1966. It was to become the largest supplier of calculators in the U.K., with sales of £4.5 million in 1971. In 1972 they developed one of the first electronic pocket calculators, but were beaten to the market by Sinclair Radionics due to lack of management enthusiasm for the project. In 1973 Sumlock Anita Electronics were acquired by Rockwell International who closed down the operation in 1976.
The remainder of the business continued to be owned by the then parent company, Control Systems Ltd which was acquired the Swedish Incentive Group in the early 1980s which resulted in the break-up of the company

The Glock is a series of semi-automatic pistols designed and produced by Glock GmbH, located in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. Glock commands over 65% of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies.
The Glock 17 became a standard NATO-classified sidearm and was granted a NATO Stock Number 1005/25/133/6775.
The Glock 17 is a 9mm short recoil-operated locked breech semi-automatic pistol that uses a modified Browning cam-lock system adapted from the Hi-Power pistol. The firearm's locking mechanism utilizes a linkless, vertically tilting barrel with a rectangular breech that locks into the ejection port cut-out in the slide. During the recoil stroke, the barrel moves rearward initially locked together with the slide approximately 3 mm (0.12 in) until the bullet leaves the barrel and chamber pressure drops to a safe level. Thus care must be taken to keep your lower thumb of the hand clear when using the pistol. Otherwise your skin can aquire a tasty rip or bruise.

A free standing outside toilet / WC as would have been seen in the back yards of British terraced back to back housing. While tenements and closes were more prominent in Scotland, this was the typical english workers house loo.
this reminds me of my dads brother my uncle Arthur. When he moved his bathroom and toilet indoors he took pride in keeping his outdoor privy. Although it became rather proudly his white wine cellar in winter.
I once was on a health and safety course. There was a story about a man arriving to hospital with a fractured skull. When he came around apparently a toilet tank had collapsed on to him while on the toilet. Apparently he had pulled the chain and the bracket had collapsed.
When asked 'Why on earth did you do that', he replied 'Just to see what it felt like!'
...these people should get out more, life on the edge...mmmmnnn!

I remember when backpacking in Japan back 20 years ago, the rage was heated toilet seats. Thermostatically controlled mind.
Every Ryoken or house (but not temple) offering B&
B seemed to yank up the temperature to 30 degrees for gaijin (foreigners or outsiders), while others probably like me discreetly switched them off (together with stool analysis and a number of other innovations that have thankfully never left Japan). So think about how lucky you are when you next complain about that chilly bog seat.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DMTFG1 - A braille or tactile pocket watch displayed on raised Braille text, connected with the Royal National Institute of Blind People and the long history of accessible timekeeping for blind and partially sighted people. The open watch face shows raised markers around the dial and sturdy hands designed to be read by touch, allowing a person to tell the time independently without relying on sight. The image is useful for editorial coverage of assistive technology, accessibility, disability history, inclusive design, RNIB, Braille literacy, tactile reading, visual impairment, blindness, personal independence and everyday objects adapted for blind users. RNIB traces its origins to 1868, when Thomas Rhodes Armitage founded the British and Foreign Society for Improving the Embossed Literature of the Blind, reflecting the wider nineteenth century drive to improve access to reading, education, employment and practical tools for blind people. Tactile watches are still sold and discussed today as accessible devices, although RNIB notes that products described as braille watches may vary, so the actual tactile features should always be checked. This close-up composition places the historic watch directly on embossed Braille, making the photograph especially strong for illustrating touch, reading by hand, independence, sensory design and development of technology before talking watches and smartphones. The dark background, polished metal case, open cover, visible crown and angled light give the object a museum-like quality, suitable for articles on social history, product design, disability rights, accessible consumer goods, charities, adaptive equipment and the evolution of assistive devices. It can also support educational material about Louis Braille's system, raised dots, inclusive communication, sight loss, low vision support and the importance of practical design that allows blind and partially sighted people to manage daily life with dignity and privacy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0KPPD - Mersey Beat was a music publication in Liverpool, England in the early 1960s. It was founded by Bill Harry, who was one of John Lennon's classmates at Liverpool Art College. The paper carried news about all the local Liverpool bands, and stars who came to town to perform.
The Beatles had a close association with Mersey Beat, which carried many exclusive stories and photos of them. It also published several of Lennon's early writings, including a history of the band, and occasional comical classified advertisements by him as space filler.
Between 1958 and 1964, the Merseyside area had about 500 different groups, which were constantly forming and breaking up, with an average of about 350 groups playing concerts on a regular basis. In 1961, Harry and The Cavern Club's DJ, Bob Wooler, compiled a list of groups that they had personally heard of, which had almost 300 names. In 1962, Mersey Beat held a poll to find out who was the most popular Merseyside group. When the votes were counted, Rory Storm & The Hurricanes were in first place, but after looking through the postal votes again, Harry noticed that forty votes were all written in green ink, in the same handwriting, and from the same area of Liverpool, so the dubious votes were declared void. This was suspected to have been Storm himself, but Harry had no idea that The Beatles had done exactly the same thing.
The results were announced on 4 January 1962, with The Beatles in first place. The results were printed in issue 13 of Mersey Beat on 4 January 1962, with the front page announcing, Beatles Top Poll!
An iconic symbol of the Mersey Beat era was the poster artwork created by local artist Tony Booth. He was a popular figure amongst the promoters in the area where he was commissioned to create hundreds of the posters used to advertise all the concerts that were occurring during that period. His posters were seen on walls all across Merseyside including some of his famous work outside The Cavern Club

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED335 - Photo shows The Scotsman newspaper on sale in Edinburgh Scotland. The image is useful for illustrating British and Irish pub culture, real ale, traditional bars, hospitality, visitor economy stories and the continued importance of pubs as social places. Where a named pub, brewery, beer pump, pint glass or drinking street is visible, it can support articles on licensed premises, cask ale, CAMRA interest, tourism, nightlife, local character and changing high streets. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near Edinburgh, Scotland, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Visible wording, branding or signage noted in the supplied caption should be kept as search evidence because it helps buyers looking for specific editorial concepts, public messages, commercial streets, transport detail or local identity. Weather and season may be visible outside or through the setting
the subject has clear hospitality and leisure value. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6W3 - In Western culture, the finger, or the middle finger (as in giving someone the (middle) finger, the bird or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to fuck me, fuck you, shove it up your ass/arse, up yours or go fuck yourself. It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use it to express pointing without intentional disrespect. The gesture is usually used to express contempt but can also be used humorously or playfully.
The gesture dates back to ancient Greece and it was also used in ancient Rome. Historically, it represented the phallus. In the early 1800s, it gained increasing recognition as a sign of disrespect and was used by music artists (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes and politicians
most still view the gesture as obscene). The index finger and ring finger besides the middle finger in more contemporary periods has been likened to represent the testes.
In July 2022 UK Tory MP,Andrea Jenkyns for Morley and Outwood, who gave protesters the middle finger made parliamentary under-secretary of state minister at the Department for Education.
