Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDKD - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The church dates from the late 13th century with additions in the 19th century. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich. Its benefice is combined with those of St John, Doddington, and St Chad, Wybunbury. The church stands in an elevated position in the centre of the village. History The church is not recorded in the Domesday Book and it is thought that the first building on the site was given by Thomas de Aldelim to the priory of St Thomas at Stafford in the reign of Edward I. After the dissolution of the monasteries the advowson was granted to the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. The church dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries. In 1855“56 there were additions and alterations by Lynam and Rickman The church stands on a small mound in the centre of the village. It is a grandiose stone building on Southport's main shopping boulevard, with an imposing clock tower. Entrance is through the ornamented porte-cochère. Inside the foyer has a large stone fireplace inscribed with the date of the hall. A majestic staircase leads up to the old Cambridge Hall. A public hall created at first floor level, the Cambridge Hall was originally flat-floored with a platform stage, with a raised gallery on three sides and large French windows leading onto the balcony.
In 1875, William Atkinson offered Southport Corporation £6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town.
William Atkinson was a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport with his sick wife looking for the refreshing sea air. He eventually moved to Southport and generously donated approximately £40,000 to the town during his lifetime and played an active part in its development. The architects Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, which opened in 1878.

In 1974, when the entire building was converted to Southport Arts Centre, the hall was transformed into the main auditorium. The gallery was removed, and stadium style seating provided in a single rake, facing the improved stage facilities. The smaller Victoria Hall was converted to a rehearsal room and then, in 1990, to a 300-seat studio theatre.
It had been suggested that retail development permitted in the 1980s to the side and rear of the building would limit the opportunity to improve facilities in the arts centre any further. However funding from Sefton Council, the North West Development Agency and the Government's Sea Change initiative from 2008 onwards led to a major redevelopment programme for the building.

It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294“95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.
Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath, the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a UNESCO world heritage site tourist attraction.

It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. The Doodle on Ducie Street has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival
The mural, The Doodle on Ducie Street, has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival in November which aims to raise awareness of homelessness and support homeless people.
We had almost 40 artists working on this and we came together just one week ago, said street artist and activist Joel.
It's been an intense week. We got together and asked what we could create that would represent everyone and what message or story we wanted to tell. Everyone made sketches and we made a composition, then each day we came out and worked on it.
Now the wall is a wondrous array of colour, inspired by Joel's signature style, designed to encourage conversation “ perfect for the upcoming festival.
The unique creative team was organised with the help of With One Voice, an organisation which sets out to tackle homelessness in a creative way.
Everyone came together and decided what was important to them. We came up with this concept of the guy on the mural, he's flying through the air from challenges in his life to a brighter future, said With One Voice director, Matt Peacock.
It's been an amazing experience, says Matt. We were really conscious that we were putting this piece of public art in the centre of Manchester, where homelessness has been on the rise. For many years people would rightly say, ˜why art?'
And the reasons for that, which I hope you can see, are so many things “ it's about personal and societal regeneration, it's about telling a different story about homelessness, and giving a voice to people who are and have been homeless to say what they want to say to the public.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHG7C - The River of Life project was developed in the aftermath of the 1993 IRA bomb in Warrington, which killed two boys - Tim Parry and Jonathan Ball - and injured dozens of people in Warrington City Centre.
The desire was to bring hope, freshness and new life to Bridge Street and the community. A streetscape concept emerged, incorporating every aspect of the urban landscape and its elements including paving, seating units and lighting columns.
CONCEPT
Central to the design is a tear shaped water feature. Water emerges from a broken glacial boulder, flows along a bronze channel, whose sides tell the story of creation, in low relief detail, and cascades onto a bronze dome, which bears the imprints of the hands of local school children. The dome is circled by a disk of etched copper that pictures the faces of several children, including Tim and Jonathan. Inspiration for the River of Life came from the powerful description of waters and the leaves of the trees - for the healing of the nations - described in the biblical book of Revelation. Symbols of brokeness, healing, new life and the passage of time can be seen and discovered throughout this unique artwork.
A symbolic water source is re-created over the full length of the pedestrianised section of Bridge Street. Using natural stone and granite sets, the floor design detail accurately mirrors the meandering course of the River Mersey as it passes through the borough of Warrington. Set into this meandering path are 12 bronze discs, that are part of the Leaves of the Trees project and involved twelve primary schools from the Borough.

It was originally opened by the Caledonian in September 1849, as the terminus of their branch line from Newton and was originally known simply as Hamilton.[2] The branch was then extended to Motherwell and also to Ferniegair (to join existing routes southwards to Strathaven & Coalburn) in December 1876 - a new Hamilton Central station serving the town was opened on this route at the same time, with the former terminus renamed Hamilton West and rebuilt for through traffic.
Services south of Haughhead Junction to Larkhall & Coalburn ended in October 1965 due to the Beeching Axe, but the line as far as Larkhall was reopened in 2005. The Hamilton Circle line was electrified by British Rail in 1974, as part of the wider scheme to electrify the northern end of the West Coast Main Line.

Because it takes boats approximately one week to complete the circuit, it is suited to narrowboat holidays that start at and return to the same location. The route has 92 locks and is 97 miles (156 km) long. The term Cheshire Ring first appeared in the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) Bulletin in 1965,[2] where it was coined as part of a campaign to prevent the abandonment of, and restore navigation to, part of what had been known as the Peak Forest Circular Route between Manchester and Marple. When commercial carrying declined after the Second World War, sections of the Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals that make up the urban part of the ring had gradually fallen into disuse, and by the early 1960s were impassable, with little depth of water and many locks in an unusable condition. There was a risk that the canals would be abandoned, and infilled, as they were becoming stinking eyesores. Perseverance by the IWA and the Peak Forest Canal Society paid off, and on 1 April 1974, following restoration, the ring was re-opened to navigation.
The Rochdale Canal (unlike most other canals in England) was not nationalised in 1947, and remained in the ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company. Both the Rochdale Canal and Bridgewater Canal escaped nationalisation as a result of being owned subsidiaries of the Manchester Ship Canal company.

Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and the docking complex.

John Foxx And The Maths are touring the UK during October 2011. They will be performing material from their new album Interplay as well as classic songs from early Ultravox and John\u2019s solo career. This includes material from his pioneering debut album, 1980\u2032s Metamatic.
The tour started in Leamington Spa, then Bristol Thekla, I saw them Friday the 21st of October, 2011 at the Manchester Academy 4. Special guest was Tara Busch.
The last album Interplay is a collaboration between Foxx and electronic composer and synthesizer collector, Benge (Ben Edwards). The latter is best known for his 2008 album Twenty Systems, which was described by Brian Eno as a \u2018Brilliant contribution to the archaeology of electronic music.\u2019
The band are from left to right, Hannah Peel (Keyboards / Violin), John Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards on drums) and Serafina Steer (on Keyboards, Bass).

One of the first plans for a national library was that devised by the Welsh mathematician John Dee, who in 1556 presented Mary I of England with a visionary plan for the preservation of old books, manuscripts and records and the founding of a national library but his proposal was not taken up.
The beautiful National Library of Ireland was established by the Dublin Science and Art Museum Act, 1877, which provided that the bulk of the collections in the possession of the Royal Dublin Society, should be vested in the then Department of Science and Art for the benefit of the public and of the Society, and for the purposes of the Act.
An Agreement of 1881 provided that the Library should operate under the superintendence of a Council of twelve Trustees, eight of whom were appointed by the Society and four by the Government
this Agreement also conferred on the Trustees the duty of appointing the officers of the Library. This arrangement remained in place until the library became an autonomous cultural institution in 2005.
After the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1924/5 the Library was transferred to the Department of Education under which it remained until 1986 when it was transferred to the Department of An Taoiseach. In 1927 the Library was granted legal deposit status under the Industrial and Commercial Property (Protection) Act, 1927. In 1992 the Library transferred to the newly established Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht (now Arts, Sport and Tourism) and on 3 May 2005 became an autonomous cultural institution under the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997.

Jodrell Bank is a world leader in radio astronomy-related research and technology development but also carries out research across the electromagnetic spectrum and in theoretical topics. It was first in the west to track the Russian USSR Luna 1 probe.
While the early warning radars at Fylingdales Moor were being constructed Jodrell Bank was held in a sort of readiness to track Soviet ICBM:s by using the big antenna as a radar. The radar tracking of the Sputnik rocket bodies (and later Sputnik 3 itself) demonstrated that the telescope had the capability to detect missiles at great range and the telescope was given an interim ballistic missile early warning role. Presumably also this effort provided some much needed funding for the telescope.
The Centre occupies three main locations: the world-famous Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire (shown here in panorama form, original dimensions 7332x3666pixels), and the Alan Turing and Sackville St Buildings in central Manchester.
The Lovell Telescope has stood proudly over the Cheshire Plain since its completion in 1957 and is the flagship of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The observatory is a place of learning, teaching and research for the many engineers, astronomers and students who develop and use the radio telescopes here.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was good for infrared.

Released June 1995, A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English rock band The Verve. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, a popular soul movement in Britain during the 1960s at which Wigan (The Wigan casino) was near its epicentre.
The Verve formed in 1990 in Wigan with Richard Ashcroft on vox, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to shoegazing and space rock, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and three albums.
I had first heard a track from their first album on a magazine compilation and was then hooked.
For this 2nd album the band de-camped to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated:
'Practising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines'.
Critical acclaim was heaped upon the album (justifyably). Guitar Magazine writer Dan Eccleston claimed 'the band retreated to their Wigan rehearsal room and plugged in, tuned up and flipped out into that parallel universe wherein the Verve song resides. And the result is A Northern Soul - a record whose deep, dark funky rock makes their actually rather lovely '93 debut A Storm in Heaven sound almost limp. The Verve essence remains - swirling guitar arpeggios, grand rock themes, sprawling structures - but it's warmer, denser and more powerful in every way.'

Wigan Athletic Football Club is a professional football (Soccer ! ) team based in Wigan, Greater Manchester. They compete in the Premier League, in which they have been playing since their promotion from the Championship in 2005. Wigan's current spell in the Premier League is the only top flight run in the club's history.
They have played at the DW Stadium since 1999, which they now own, sharing the stadium with rugby league club Wigan Warriors. They previously played at Springfield Park for 67 years.
As of the 2009\u201310 season, Wigan Athletic are the youngest club in the Premier League, having only been formed in 1932. Sporting goods retailer JJB Sports\u2014whose former chairman Dave Whelan owns Wigan Athletic and his company DW Sports Fitness is currently the stadium's main sponsor.

Another fave of mine from probably the best album you have never heard!
The band's founding members were Chris Corner and Liam Howe, who then recruited Kelli Dayton in in Hartlepool, England in 1994. Combined with the fear of being identified with the fad for trip-hop acts (e.g. Portishead), Dayton was asked to leave the group, and Corner became the singer from the second album onwards.
Chris Corner left the band in 2003 and released two solo albums in 2004 and 2006 under the moniker IAMX titled Kiss + Swallow and The Alternative. Kelli Ali (Dayton) recorded her third solo album Rocking Horse at the beginning of 2008 and released it through One Little Indian late Autumn 2008. She is quoted as saying this is a very different affair to her two previous solo albums, Tigermouth and Psychic Cat. Rocking Horse was produced by Max Richter.

Which tube is it for Euston Station?
Have you ever asked yourself that? I can guess the answer, its likely to be the same as mine.
However, Microsoft seem to think we need help for this, from that not very useful search engine, thats recently been rebranded from Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search. Er.. Bing.
If you haven't heard of it, thats because its not so popular. Bing is the third largest search engine on the web by query volume, at 3.24%, after its competitor Google at 84.80% and Yahoo at 6.19%. A piece of trivia, Bing's official Chinese name is b\u00ec y\u00ecng ( \u5fc5\u61c9 ), which literally means 'very certain to respond' or 'very certain to answer' in Chinese. Neat eh!
Bing is marketted as the simple search engine.
Anyway back to Euston.... The launch advert for Bing in the UK asks this question. 'Which tube is it for Euston Station?'. Bing comes to the rescue in the marketting world to return the simple correct answer. Although in the real world, like you may have guessed, you would have been better sticking with Google all along.

Edith Smith Way is the name of the road beside the Guildhall Arts Centre, on 'St Peter's Hill'
it is named after England's first policewoman. Miss Mary Allen and Miss Ellen F. Harburn reported for duty on the 'beat' on November 27, 1914, during the First World War.
The government had always opposed the idea of police women but with large numbers of policemen joining the British Army, it was considered a good idea to have women volunteers to help run the service. Another reason that Dawson's proposal was accepted was that her members were willing to work without pay
In February 1915 Dawson and Allen renamed her organisation, the Women's Police Service (WPS). At first the WPS concentrated its work in the London area. Wearing a dark-blue uniform, the WPS were assigned responsibilities such as looking after the welfare of refugees.
Later that year, Allen was sent to sort out problems in Grantham and Hull. Both towns had army camps and local people were complaining about drunken behaviour and a growth in prostitution.
Mary Allen was a former suffragette and had been previously arrested outside the House of Commons and later went on to be the commandant of the UK's women's police force from the 1920s up to 1940. She helped to set up women's police forces in other countries, including Germany. Edith Smith became the first female with powers of arrest in August 1915.
I wont mention that other 'lady of Grantham' I am sure I will find an excuse to post on that subject shortly!

Broadford (An t-\u00c0th Leathann in Scottish Gaelic), together with nearby Harrapool, is the second-largest settlement on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, lying on the SW corner of Broadford Bay, on the A87 between Portree and the Skye Bridge. Overlooked by the eastern Cuillins, Broadford is in a beautiful tranquil area.
West of Broadford, on the lower slopes of Beinn na Caillich, is Goir a' Bhlair, 'the field of battle'. The battle concerned was apparently a decisive action by the Gaelic Clan Mackinnon against the Vikings.
Broadford was a cattle market until 1812, when Telford built the road from Portree to Kyleakin. Its said that veterans of the Napoleonic Wars settled during the first half of the 19th century. Writing in the middle of the 19th century, Alexander Smith said, 'If Portree is the London of Skye, Broadford is its Manchester.
There is a song by the rock band Jethro Tull called 'Broadford Bazaar' (on the remastered version of the Heavy Horses album) which is named after this town.

Portree (Scottish Gaelic: Port Rìgh, is the largest town on Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the location for the only secondary school on the Island, Portree High school. Public transport services are limited to buses.
Portree has a harbour, fringed by cliffs as can be seen here, with a pier designed by Thomas Telford Attractions in the town include the Àros centre which celebrate the island's Gaelic heritage. The town also serves as a centre for tourists exploring the island.
The Royal Hotel is the site of MacNab's Inn, the last meeting place of Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746.
The town plays host to the Isle of Skye's shinty club, Skye Camanachd. They play at Pairc nan Laoch above the town on the road to Struan.

The nearby crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-Àth Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mhòr (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin

Alnwick Castle guards a road crossing the River Aln. Yves de Vescy, Baron of Alnwick, erected the first parts of the castle in about 1096.[5] Beatrix de Vesci, daughter of Yves de Vescy married Eustace Fitz John, Constable of Chestershire and Knaresborough. By his marriage to Beatrix de Vesci he gained the Baronies of Malton and Alnwick. The castle was first mentioned in 1136 when it was captured by King David I of Scotland. At this point it was described as very strong. It was besieged in 1172 and again in 1174 by William the Lion, King of Scotland and William was captured outside the walls during the Battle of Alnwick. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGGE0C - The Roman Theatre in Mainz, Rhineland Palatinate (ancient Mogontiacum) was excavated in the late 1990s. It is located immediately next to the Mainz Römisches Theater station and was once the largest Roman theatre north of the Alps, with a diameter of 116 metres, a stage-width of 42 metres, and a capacity of roughly ten thousand people.
Mogontiacum owed its significance to its location at the meeting point of the Main and the Rhine. The city provided a convenient base for the defense of the nearby border of the Roman empire, the limes, and for the organisation of military campaigns against the Germanii. As a result, a double legionary camp was built on the site in 13/12 BC, which remained in place until some time after AD 350.
Over time a civilian settlement (Latin vicus) also developed on the site, which became the provincial capital of the newly created province of Germania Superior around AD 80. In this city, a Roman theatre was built, which was probably closely associated with the funerary games held in honour of Drusus. From 9 BC, military parades (decursio militum) were held in honour of Drusus at his cenotaph, the Drususstein, which was only 340 metres away from the theatre. Accordingly, the Roman theatre may have been used for the thanksgiving ceremony (supplicatio) by the representations of the sixty local Gallic communities (Galliarum civitates) in honour of Drusus. Suetonius mentions a theatre at Mogontiacum in his account of events in AD 39. Probably the currently visible stone structure was preceded by an earlier structure in wood.
The theatre was the largest Roman theatre north of the Alps, seating some 10,000 visitors. The diameter of the seating area is 116 metres and the diameter of the orchestra in 42 metres. After the construction of the city wall in the middle of the fourth century AD, for which stone from the theatre was used, the theatre was left outside the walled area and fell into ruin. The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018.
The main depot and offices for Warrington's Own Buses are located on Wilderspool Causeway at the junction with Chester Road.
The two main sheds to the rear of the site were originally built in 1943 for Fairey Aviation and used to assemble wings for their Fulmar bomber until they were purchased by Warrington Corporation in 1947. This site eventually became the main operational centre, with the frontage of the depot dating from 1964. The ground floor consists of a reception area and vehicle inspection bays, with the company's offices on the upper floor.
The Travel Centre on the main concourse at Warrington Bus Interchange provides for season ticket sales and information. Other facilities are located here for driving and supervisory staff.
