Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEH8 - Taken on 15 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Cafe with Dogs Welcome sign ( but no wasps) ! - Horsemarket, Barnard Castle - County Durham, England, DL12 8LY. The location is Horsemarket, Barnard Castle , County Durham, England, DL12 8LY. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. Barnard Castle is a historic Teesdale market town, with stone streets, independent shops and castle associations that support tourism, heritage trails and local retail photography. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Barnard Castle, Horsemarket, Dogs Welcome, dogs, welcome, canines, outside, entrance, door, chalked, County Durham, DL12, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British soc.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ36Y - Royal Mail to be investigated for missed delivery targets
Royal Mail is facing an investigation by the industry watchdog after it failed to meet its delivery targets over the past year.
Ofcom said it would consider whether any exceptional events explained why Royal Mail fell short.
But if there were no satisfactory explanation, the regulator said it would consider imposing a fine.
The postal service delivered only 73.7% of First Class mail within a day - far short of the 93% target.
Ofcom said the impact of Covid was no longer an excuse for poor delivery performance.
If Royal Mail is fined, it would be its second penalty since 2019 when it paid out £1.5m for failing to deliver first class letters on time.
A Quality of Service report from Royal Mail also showed it delivered only 90.7% of second class mail within three days, below a target of 98.5%.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said it was disappointed with its performance, adding: We will participate fully with any Ofcom's investigation.
Ofcom takes quality of service very seriously, the regulator said. In deciding whether the company is in breach of its obligations, we will consider if there were any exceptional events - beyond the company's control - that may have explained why it missed its targets. If it does not provide a satisfactory explanation and we determine that Royal Mail has failed to comply with its obligations, we may consider whether to impose a financial penalty, it said.
On Friday, Royal Mail's chief executive Simon Thompson announced that he would leave, meaning the company will soon be searching for its third boss in five years.
Royal Mail said its services had been affected by 18 days of strike action and that high levels of staff absence continued to hamper operations.
It said it hoped an agreement reached last month with Communication Workers Union (CWU) would resolve the matter and allow it to rapidly improve its services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R27BYY - YOUNG people have joined forces with a local artist to transform an underpass in the centre of town.
An underpass between Warrington's bus interchange and the Youth Zone, has had a much-needed makeover thanks to the artist Tim Twist and the youngsters.
Tim helped mastermind the art project, alongside contributions from Warrington Youth Zone, and the youngsters who use the services there.
The mural is designed to reflect key aspects of the town
The mural includes a tribute to Viola Beach, with references to their single 'Swings and Waterslides.'
The artwork shows off the skyline of Warrington, with buildings and sites such as Warrington Wireworks, the Transporter Bridge and the Halliwell Jones Stadium, with a Wolf rising from the ground.
Central supporting columns of the underpass now reflect the cooling towers at Fiddlers Ferry, as well as the Neighbourhood Weekender festival, the Golden Gates and the iconic ˜Pink Eye' building, which will be signed by Anthony Turk who created the original artwork on the building over 20 years ago.
Cllr Tom Jennings, cabinet member for economic development and innovation, said: The artwork has brought about a remarkable improvement to a well-used underpass. I thank Tim Twist and our young people for their talent and efforts over the past few weeks.
This project serves as a testament to the transformative power of art in enhancing our town centre and I'm sure it will instil a further sense of pride in our town's heritage and ownership of our continuing story to all that view it.
Tom Jowett, head of youth work at Warrington Youth Zone, said: Since identifying the site for the youth zone on Dallam Lane our young people identified, they would like to create some artwork on the underpass to make a more warm and welcoming approach to the youth zone and the town centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6GB2J - The Mander Centre is a major shopping centre in Wolverhampton City Centre, in Wolverhampton, England, developed by Manders Holdings Plc, the paint, inks and property conglomerate, between 1968 and 1974. The site occupies four and a half acres comprising the old Georgian works and offices of the Mander family firm, founded in 1773, as well as the site of the former Queens Arcade (promoted privately by Charles Tertius Mander), which had stood on the site since 1902.
When the main part of the Mander Centre opened in 1968, the Central Arcade retained its Edwardian architecture and was refurbished as the main entrance to the Mander Centre from Dudley Street.
In May 1974 the Central Arcade was destroyed by a severe fire that reduced it to rubble, which was declared unsafe and was subsequently demolished. The area was later rebuilt as the entrance to the centre
The centre was refurbished in 1987, when it was described as a covered pedestrianised shopping complex at the centre of the principal shopping area of Wolverhampton with more than 150 shops.
In 2003 the centre embarked on a further multi-million pound refurbishment programme. It was an opportunity to complete the enclosure of the centre to make it fully climate controlled. The marble floor in the entire centre was replaced along with the relocation of the escalators and stairways. The biggest change was the creation of the large New Look store which took over numerous stores.
Throughout 2016 and 2017, the centre was refurbished and configured as part of the £25 million investment, and a series of new larger stores was created, forcing some stores to close down and relocate within the centre. WH Smith and Tesco were closed, and Superdrug relocated. The reconfiguration was also to include new escalators and lifts, the removal of the Lower Central Arcade and the relocation of the toilets.
On 18 November 2016 H&M was the first major store to open as part of the shopping centre's multimillion-pound redevelopment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD2N0 - Serenity is a large mural by street art duo SNIK at the back of the Greater Manchester Police Museum & Archives. It is a tribute to all women that stand against injustice. Over 100 years ago the Suffragettes gathered around the corner in Stevenson Square in a stance for equality so it is fitting that this mural is located just off the square on Little Lever Street.
This piece was organised by the Cities of Hope project.

Will you help turn an ugly underpass into a picturesque passage?
The Macclesfield Brick Project offers people the chance to paint one of 3,000 bricks on Park Lane
An ugly underpass is to be transformed into a picturesque passage through a new art project.
The Macclesfield Brick Project is offering everyone a chance to paint one of the 3,000 ˜bricks' which line the subway beneath Park Lane.
For 10 days from Monday, May 23, a different artist from the town will be on hand to help would-be artists create their mini-masterpieces.
Artists include: Ralph McGaul. Kails Tresson, TJ Dolan, Jean Westbrook, Pat Cody, Julie Hamer, Jane Osmond and Dan Petley, who came up with the idea.
Dan said: Your job is to design and hand paint one in this wall to show how you feel about Macclesfield. When each of the bricks is finished, your work will be a part of a giant colourful communal masterpiece.
We have been inspired by the diversity of people of all ages, who regularly walk through this underpass, and we want to involve them in producing meaningful miniature paintings.
The project is being supported by Macclesfield Town Council and runs until June 1.
Dan added: Your work could be about things you enjoy doing in Macclesfield, local wildlife, a picture of your friend or anything that inspires you.
Coun Neil Puttick, from Macclesfield Town Council, encouraged everyone to get involved.
He said: We already have lots of community groups and schools coming along for the first half of the project, but if you'd like to paint a brick feel free to come along.

His career took him from being one of the key DJs in the acid house movement of the late 1980s to being a remixer of tracks by the likes of Happy Mondays, New Order, Björk, the Orb, the Future Sound of London and My Bloody Valentine.
His production work on Primal Scream's album Screamadelica, adding samples, loops and creating an influential mix of hard rock, house and rave, helped the record win the first ever Mercury Music Prize in 1992 and become one of the most celebrated albums of the 1990s

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGJEE9 - One of Chinatown's most noticeable landmarks is the archway on Faulkner Street. The paifang, underneath which road traffic passes, was specially built in China and shipped over in three containers. Construction commenced over Christmas 1986 and was completed by Easter 1987, a year after the city of Manchester was twinned with Wuhan. The structure was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese community, and is adorned with dragons and phoenixes.
After many years exposed to the elements, the arch required restoration work to be undertaken
netting was wrapped around a part of the structure to prevent further tiles from dislodging. The Manchester Chinatown Community Group undertook a series of charity events, including a dry land dragon boat race in June 2012. In early 2013 the archway was repaired by Manchester and Cheshire Construction Company. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGJEET - One of Chinatown's most noticeable landmarks is the archway on Faulkner Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PCH - An 18m high mural adorns the gable end wall of the old magistrates' court which now forms part of the Pyramid arts centre at the corner of Museum Street and Winmarleigh Street.
'Reflection of Warrington' was created as part of a partnership between Wired Young Carers, Culture Warrington, Spearfish Arts and renowned illustrator Will Barras.
The project cost £6,000 and was funded by a local trust foundation.
Children, aged between eight and 15, were given a break from their responsibilities caring for loved ones to help work with Will on the design.
The idea was to find a new way for young people to engage with the town's history.
The group decided on a range of images including iconic structures such as the Golden Gates and the Barley Mow, famous faces like Jonathan Blackburne, the Lord of the Manor of Warrington famous for growing the north west's first pineapple at Orford Hall, and the Mad Hatter's tea party scene from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
Scenes illustrating the town's industrial heritage are also featured alongside a depiction of the ill-fated RMS Tayleur which was built in Warrington.
Will and the team spent 46 hours on the street art design over six days using 25 litres of emulsion and 100 spray cans.
The project has been around a year in the making with a workshop in February to gather ideas on how the mural should look.
Planning permission to paint the wall was approved at the end of September when Historic England raised no objections.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JBX - Fays Shoes, Handmade Irish Dance Footwear, have always believed in creating only the highest quality Irish dancing rootwear and are the worldwide leaders in the manufacture of high quality Irish dancing shoes. That was recognized in 1995 when we were chosen to be the original and official shoemakers of dancing shoes for Riverdance. Read more about our Riverdance story.

Eamon and Dan tap into the wonder of Riverdance by Tomas Conlon
DAN Fay and his son Eamon are shoemakers to the stars. In a quiet workshop off Dublin's Parnell Square they have crouched for weeks over their lasts, making the dancing shoes that have clattered in spectacular rhythm at the Riverdance show which premiered Thursday night. Sixty-four-year-old Dan has been making shoes for nearly 50 years but his trade - like Irish dancing itself - came in from the margins at last year's Eurovision when Jean Butler and Michael Flatley tapped their way into the nation's heart.
Ms Butler was wearing their handmade shoes that night, as were most of the backing dancers, and both Jean and Michael will be wearing them for the duration of the Riverdance Show. In addition, they have measured and fitted the Russian Cossack dancers with their shoes, along with the guest tap dancers from America and a host of the supporting performers. The Russians have also had their cossack dancing boots mended in the Fay workshop
Dan and Eamon will also be present backstage each night of the Riverdance show to carry out running repairs on broken straps, loose heels and any other emergencies that might occur. Ms Butler's shoes in fact were rushed by courier to their workshop last Thursday for a repair job just hours before the curtain went up on the show.
The shoes are made entirely from leather with a fiberglass tip at the toe and heel which produces that tap effect.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9XYG - The Singer Gazelle name has been applied to two generations of motor cars from the British manufacturer Singer. It was positioned between the basic Hillman range and the more sporting Sunbeam versions
The Gazelle was the first Singer to be produced following the take-over of the Singer company by the Rootes Group in 1956 and was a version of the mainstream Hillman Minx differing mainly in retaining the Singer overhead cam engine. Externally the only significant difference was a restyled nose based around a traditional Singer grille. The new car was announced in late September 1956.
The body style followed by the Gazelle between 1956 and 1967 came to be known as the Audax body, with significant input from the US based Loewy design organisation, highly regarded at the time partly on account of Loewy's input to several iconic Studebaker designs.
The Gazelle was initially offered in saloon and convertible body styles. The Gazelle Series II, offered from autumn 1957, was also available as an estate car, and had optional overdrive and larger fuel tank.
The suspension was independent at the front using coil springs while at the rear was a live axle and half elliptic leaf springs. The steering gear used a worm and nut system.
As standard, the car had a bench front seat but individual seats were available as an option. To allow for the bench seat, the handbrake lever was between the seat and the door.
The convertible version had a two position hood where it could be either completely lowered or rolled back to just behind the front seats described as the coupé de ville position. All side windows could be completely lowered. To compensate for the loss of body rigidity by the removal of the roof, extra cross bracing was fitted under the car.
A car with overdrive was tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1957. It had a top speed of 78.0 mph (125.5 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 24.8 seconds. A fuel consumption of 33.5 miles per gallon.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8DYKB - Anti-climb paint (also known as non-drying paint, anti-intruder paint, anti-vandal paint, anti-vandal grease) is a class of paint consisting of a thick oily coating that is applied with a stiff brush, trowel or by hand using a protective glove. In appearance it is similar to smooth gloss paint when applied but it remains slippery indefinitely thereby preventing any intruder from gaining a foothold.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9ARJ - This documentary stock photograph shows The Tunnel, Authorised Graffiti Area, Leake Street, Waterloo, Lambeth, London, South East England, UK, SE1 7NN. Leake Street near Waterloo is one of London's best-known authorised graffiti locations, strongly associated with street art, youth culture, legal walls and the continuing debate about public art, tagging, vandalism, regeneration and managed urban creativity. The image is useful because it records readable signage, giving editors a credible real-world illustration of a place where graffiti is not simply an illegal mark but part of a recognised visual environment. The tunnel setting adds a gritty, layered urban feel, with walls that can change quickly as new pieces cover older work. That makes the photograph relevant for stories about street art tourism, creative districts, London nightlife, subculture, public realm management, youth expression, urban photography and the way cities absorb and commercialise counterculture. It can also support commentary on policing, community spaces, permission walls, spray-paint culture, Banksy-era interest in graffiti, and the tension between spontaneous expression and curated visitor attractions. Search-friendly composite phrases include Leake Street graffiti tunnel, Waterloo authorised graffiti area, London street art wall, urban art culture, legal graffiti space, South Bank creative quarter and London alternative tourism. The image would suit editorial, travel, arts, youth, education, crime prevention, regeneration, planning, cultural policy and local news uses. It is especially valuable where a generic graffiti texture would be too anonymous, because the caption fixes the subject to a specific and widely recognised London location. The photograph also helps illustrate how places beneath railway arches and transport infrastructure can be repurposed into distinctive cultural spaces rather than treated only as leftover urban land.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6W8 - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin Mitte,Street art on walls,Germany Ein-und Ausfahrt sign sprayed with graffiti. The image records Berlin Mitte street art and graffiti, making it useful for editorial features on urban art, alternative tourism, wall culture, counterculture, gentrification, visual satire and layered public space. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and wider.

Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers (digits).
Ten is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2 and 5. Ten is the smallest noncototient, a number that cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total number of coprimes below it.
Ten is the second discrete semiprime (2.5) and the second member of the (2.q) discrete semiprime family. Ten has an aliquot sum σ(n) of 8 and is accordingly the first discrete semiprime to be in deficit. All subsequent discrete semiprimes are in deficit. The aliquot sequence for 10 comprises five members (10,8,7,1,0) with this number being the second composite member of the 7-aliquot tree.
It is the aliquot sum of only one number the discrete semiprime 14.
Ten is a semi-meandric number.
The Roman numeral for ten is X (which looks like two V's [the Roman numeral for 5] put together)
it is thought that the V for five is derived from an open hand (five digits displayed). Incidentally, the Chinese word numeral for ten, is a cross, too: 十.
There are said to be Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (those other than Judah and Benjamin). There are Ten Sephirot in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Bible records 10 generations between Adam and Noah, and 10 generations between Noah and Abraham.
'Ten' is an album by Y&
T, Pearl Jam, Chicago, Wet Wet wet and The Stranglers.

A great track I first heard on a give away CD www.amazon.com/MAGAZINE-MMMMM-TASTY-TRACKS-SAMPLER/dp/B00... .
It had some of the best bands and tracks of the 90's and by far the most brilliant Q give away CD ever.
This was only available with Q magazine. Track Listings were: Melanie Davies - Supergrass Stars - Dubstar Hammering the cramps - Sparklehorse King of New York - Fun Lovin' Criminals On Raglan Road - Sinead O'Connor I'm cracking up I need a pill - Babylon Zoo Flicker - Patti Rothberg She's everywhere - Strangelove Crusin' - D'Angelo Mugwump - Terrorvision Adrenalina - Octopus After hell - Tasmin Archer Spirit level - Cecil Private Universe - Crowded House Electra made me blind - Everclear Tomorrow is maybe - Indigo Lemonade secret drinker - Mansun Bishop's robes - Radiohead
Babylon Zoo were a British rock band of the mid-1990s from Wolverhampton, England, fronted by Jas Mann. They were best known for the song 'Spaceman', which on its release on 21 January 1996, went straight to #1 on the UK Singles Chart, selling 418,000 copies in the first week of release.
This is from an album entitled The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes. It was released in 1996, and included new-age tracks such as 'Is Your Soul for Sale?' and 'I'm Cracking Up I Need a Pill'. It debuted at no 6 on the UK Albums Chart, and reached the Top 20 in 17 countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada

A cracking track from 1988's 'That Petrol Emotion'. They formed in 1984 from the ashes of the Derry Hitmakers, Bam Bam and the Calling and The Undertones. It was formed by guitarist John O'Neill and second guitarist Raymond Gorman who DJ'd together at the Derry 'Left Bank' club. Drummer and friend Ciaran McLaughlin joined next after having relocated from Derry to London, followed by John's brother and Undertones lead guitarist Damian O'Neill who played bass from 1985 until 1988 upon John's departure.
That Petrol Emotion themselves were also far more political and outspoken than the Undertones. 'Abandon' released on Virgin Records in March 1990 in the UK reached no. 73 in the single charts.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'A House' were a very witty Irish band from the 1980s to the 1990s, recognized for the clever, 'often bitter or irony laden lyrics of frontman Dave Couse. This single, 'Endless Art' is one of their best known charting successes. It was produced by Edwyn Collins.
The song lyrics begin with the line 'All art is quite useless according to Oscar Wilde' and for their remainder are mostly a list of the names and birth and death dates of artists from various fields, with the chorus remark: 'all dead but still alive, in endless time and endless art'. This 'list' style of song is characteristic of many of Dave Couse's songs. Melodically, the song features a quotation from Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at the chorus.
For the first appearance of the song on Bingo, the band received some criticism for the fact that the artists listed in the song are all male, so they recorded a second version where all the artists are female. This is the version called 'More Endless Art'. In 'More Endless Art', the melodic quoatation from Beethoven is substituted with one from Carl Orff, who, it might be quibbled, is not a woman, while the substitution of 'Walt Disney's Minnie Mouse' for his Mickey Mouse may not quite right the gender balance either. Still, 'More Endless Art' was better than a defence Dave Couse had offered in interviews, that the band had thought that Joan Miró was a woman.
Dave Couse has subsequently performed a live version of 'Endless Art' with a new list of artists, those deceased since the original release of the song. This is available as 'Endless Art 06' on the B-Side of his single 'A Celebration' (2006).

With new friends moving in its always difficult decorating a new place. Dave prefers more conservative celestrial blue while Nickolas has more a leaning for a yellow golden fern. Its looking like whatever happens it will take at least three coats of magnolia to paint over Gordons old choice of Fire cracker red. when we are finished blue and yellow will mix into a nice deep green. Probably a fitting reminder that Britain elected its first green MP in Brighton only last week.
Under the UK parliamentary system of government, a hung parliament (also known as a minority parliament, a balanced parliament or no overall control) is a legislature in which no political party has an absolute majority of seats.
This situation is normal in many legislatures with proportional representation such as the parliaments of Germany and Ireland, or in legislatures with strong regional parties
in such legislatures the term 'hung parliament' is rarely used since this is the typical outcome of an election.
However in nations in which the first-past-the-post voting system in single member districts is used to elect parliament, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, a coalition government or 'hung parliament' tends to be less common, as in these circumstances one party will usually hold enough seats to form a majority, often without a plurality of votes on a national basis. To resolve a hung parliament will usually result in either a coalition government, a minority government – or even a dissolution of parliament and a fresh election. It is these who will be choosing the paint tonight, in one of Londons most iconic addresses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPF - Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway. It is located in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. It is currently owned by Bombardier Transportation.
The railway also built 200 cottages establishing a new community in what had been the rural township of Monks Coppenhall. Among the first workers to arrive were those from the old works at Edge Hill producing an increase in the town's population by some 800 men, women and children.
In 1845 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was merged with the Grand Junction. These, in turn, merged in 1846, with the London and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). All four had their own workshops but, in time, locomotive building was concentrated at Crewe.
In 1857 John Ramsbottom became Locomotive Superintendent. He had previously invented the first reliable safety valve and the scoop for picking up water from troughs between the tracks. He went on to improve the precision and interchangeability of tools and components.
In 1862 locomotive work was transferred from Wolverton. Wolverton became the carriage works, while wagon building was concentrated at Earlestown.
In 1853 Crewe had begun to make its own wrought iron and roll its own rails, and in 1864 installed a Bessemer converter for manufacturing steel. In 1868 it became the first place to use open-hearth furnaces on an industrial scale. It also built its own brickworks. Later the works was fitted with two electric arc furnaces.
Production increased steadily and, with the sale to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway of ten 2-4-0 and eighty six 0-6-0 locomotives, privately owned manufacturers took out an injunction in 1876 to restrain the railway from producing anything but its own needs. This remained in force until British Rail Engineering Limited was established in 1969.

When you cast your eyes upon the skylines
Of this once proud nation
Can you sense the fear and the hatred
Grwoing in the hearts of its population
And our youth, oh youth, are being seduced
by the greedy hands of politics and half truths
The beaten generation, the beaten generation
Reared on a diet of prejudice and mis-information
The beaten generation, the beaten generation
Open your eyes, open your imagination
We're being sedated by the gasoline fumes
and hypnotised by the satellites
Into believing what is good and what is right
You may be worshipping the temples of mammon
Or lost in the prisons of religion
But can you still walk back to happiness
When you've nowhere left to run?
And if they send in the special police
To deliver us from liberty and keep us from peace
Then won't the words sit ill upon their tongues
when they tell us justice is being done
and that freedom lives in the barrels of a .....warm gun
Lyrics somewhat still true over 20 years after they were penned.

Of course Queen Victoria visited the opening of the Manchester ship canal in May 1894. It may be likely that she visited Lymm around that time.
It does not look like the Mayor of Salford on the lower section of this stencil here however.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5004660069 - 'Paint It Black - 'The Rolling Stones' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is one band that crop up at least three times a week on my ipod, generally early stuff like this or from the 'Miss You' 'Some Girls' era.
'Paint It, Black' is a song by The Rolling Stones, released on Friday 13 May 1966 as the first single from their fourth album Aftermath. It was originally titled 'Paint It Black' without a comma. Keith Richards has stated that the comma was added by the record label, Decca. It was a number one hit in the UK and USA.
The song began with Wyman playing organ at a recording session, in parody of the group's former co-manager Eric Easton, who had been an organist. Charlie Watts accompanied the organ by playing a vaguely Middle Eastern drum part
Watts' drum pattern became the basis for the final song. Brian Jones contributed the song's signature sitar riff (having taught himself to play after a visit with George Harrison), and Jagger contributed the lyrics, seemingly about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. Both electric and acoustic guitars and the background vocals are provided by Richards. The piano is played by Jack Nitzsche.
The track has been extensively covered and I must have about five different versions of it, including WASP, U2, The Standells and The Residents (do you remember them?).
To get to know The Stones, you could do worse than start at 'Forty Licks'. Here you get a taster of every era, as usual, tell 'em I sent you :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAW31 - St Ives (Cornish: Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
Pedn Olva Mine, a former copper mine, at Pedn Olva Point adit, operated in St Ives before 1911, when the engine house on Pedn Olva Point was demolished, now the site of the Pedn Olva Hotel.
The modern seaside resort developed as a result of the arrival of the St Ives Bay branch line from St Erth, part of the Great Western Railway in 1877. With it came a new generation of Victorian seaside holidaymakers. Much of the town was built during the latter part of the 19th century. The railway, which winds along the cliffs and bays, survived the Beeching cuts and has become a tourist attraction itself
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'. The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design
The first lifeboat was stationed in the town in 1840. In 1867 the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) built a boathouse at Porthgwidden beach. It proved to be a difficult site to launch from, and in 1867 it was replaced by a building in Fore Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPF0 - Northern Quarter Graffiti,Church St, Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK, M1 is a useful documentary subject because it fixes a recognisable place, object or activity in its real setting rather than presenting it as a staged illustration. Manchester's Northern Quarter uses murals, graffiti, shutters and old warehouse streets as part of its creative identity, turning former industrial fabric into a backdrop for bars, studios and independent shops. Street art here can illustrate regeneration, gentrification, local authorship, cultural tourism, public art, music heritage and the way cities use rough edges as part of their brand. The location detail, Manchester, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include church architecture, religious building, parish church, community landmark, cash economy, sterling currency, banknotes and coins, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It would suit newspaper, magazine, web, council, transport, heritage, housing, retail, travel or social-commentary use where a believable, unpolished view of real life is more valuable than a generic illustration.
