Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RH8AFW - Harrogate railway station serves the town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Harrogate Line it is 18.25 miles (29 km) north of Leeds. Northern Trains operate the station and provide local passenger train services, with a London North Eastern Railway service to and from London King's Cross running six times per day.
History
The station was opened by the North Eastern Railway on 1 August 1862. It was designed by the architect Thomas Prosser and was the first building in Harrogate built of brick and had two platforms. Before it opened (and the associated approach lines), the town's rail routes had been somewhat fragmented ? the York and North Midland Railway branch line from Church Fenton via Tadcaster had a terminus in the town (see below), but the Leeds Northern Railway main line between Leeds and Thirsk bypassed it to the east to avoid costly engineering work to cross the Crimple Valley and the East and West Yorkshire Junction Railway from York terminated at Starbeck. Once the individual companies had become part of the NER, the company concentrated all lines at a new single depot.
The station was largely demolished in 1964/65 and replaced with a more utilitarian one (with fewer platforms) by Taylor Bown and Miller, Architects (Harrogate). A car park now occupies the site of the former bay platforms on the south side. It coincided with the loss of three of the main routes through the town in the Beeching Axe ? both routes via Wetherby closed to passenger traffic on 6 January 1964 and the Leeds Northern route to Northallerton via Ripon on 6 March 1967.
The York branch was included in Beeching's 1963 report, but it was reprieved in 1966 and remains open.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE4PF8 - The 'tragic' demise of a once thriving Cheshire shopping centre
'We've seen it decline from what was a thriving 70s-style shopping precinct' - more at https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/news/chester-cheshire-news/tragic-demise-once-thriving-cheshire-25324074
Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.
Northwich would then be hit by misfortune after misfortune : the outdoor market was gutted by fire in early 2020
the Covid pandemic caused economic chaos across the world
the devastating flooding in 2021 left many businesses badly damaged
and the town's railway station collapsed in April last year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5T1 - This image shows a Silverstone Formula One Medical Response Unit vehicle parked adjacent to pedestrian access routes during a British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The clearly marked medical response car forms part of the extensive safety and emergency planning required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Formula One race weekends at Silverstone attract very large crowds over several days, placing significant emphasis on spectator welfare, rapid emergency response, and effective crowd management. Dedicated medical vehicles and trained response teams are strategically positioned around the circuit to ensure fast access to both trackside incidents and public areas used by fans.
The photograph captures spectators walking past the medical unit under clear summer skies, reinforcing the visible presence of safety infrastructure within the wider event environment. Temporary fencing, controlled access routes, and speed restriction signage illustrate the layered approach to risk management that underpins large-scale motorsport events.
Beyond the racing itself, the image highlights the operational realities of hosting international sporting events, where emergency preparedness, duty of care, and public safety are as critical as sporting spectacle. It is well suited for editorial use covering motorsport safety, event management, emergency services, and crowd protection at major UK sporting venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0B4 - BBC Northern Ireland (Irish: BBC Thuaisceart ??ireann
Ulster-Scots: BBC Norlin Airlan) is a division of the BBC and the main public broadcaster in Northern Ireland. It is widely available across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
BBC Northern Ireland is one of the four BBC national regions, together with the BBC English Regions, BBC Scotland and BBC Cymru Wales. Based at Broadcasting House, Belfast, it provides television, radio, online and interactive television content. BBC Northern Ireland currently employs 700 people, largely in Belfast.
BBC Northern Ireland has two TV channels - BBC One Northern Ireland, BBC Two Northern Ireland
and two radio stations - BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Radio Foyle.
BBC Northern Ireland operates two television stations: BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC Two Northern Ireland. BBC Northern Ireland funds an opt-out service with the majority of this output made in the independent sector. Some output that originates in London (so-called 'network' programmes) are time-shifted to create appropriate slots for programming that is more appealing to the BBC audience in NI.
Prior to 27 October 2006, BBC Two NI was a digital only service while BBC Two Northern Ireland was available on analogue transmission. Since 28 October 2006, BBC Two Northern Ireland has been the on-air name for both services which have been merged.
BBC Northern Ireland has its own team of continuity announcers which introduce the vast majority of programmes on BBC One and BBC Two in Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGJW6Y - A street-level view of The Auction Mart, a distinctive historic building in Godalming, Surrey, now occupied by Godalming Veterinary Surgery. The corner building features traditional brickwork, arched windows, and a prominent turret-style roof structure, giving it a recognisable presence within the town centre streetscape. Clear signage identifies both the historic building name and its current use as a veterinary practice.
Godalming is a historic market town in Surrey, known for its mix of period architecture and independent local services. The reuse of the Auction Mart as a veterinary surgery reflects the adaptive use of older town-centre buildings to support contemporary community needs, in this case providing animal healthcare and veterinary services for pets and local residents.
The photograph was taken in daylight, with leafy branches framing the upper part of the image, adding a seasonal, summery feel. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial uses illustrating UK veterinary services, local high-street businesses, historic buildings in modern use, and the character of English market towns.
Location: The Auction Mart, Godalming Veterinary Surgery, Godalming, Surrey, England (town-centre location

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y2F - The New Routemaster, originally referred to as the New Bus for London and colloquially as the Borismaster or Boris Bus, is a low-floor diesel double-decker bus operated in London, England. Designed by Heatherwick Studio and manufactured by Wrightbus, it is notable for featuring a hop-on hop-off rear open platform similar to the original Routemaster bus design but updated to meet requirements for modern buses to be fully accessible. It first entered service in February 2012.
The original AEC Routemaster was used as the standard London bus type, with a rear open platform and crewed by both a driver and conductor. After half a century it was withdrawn from service at the end of 2005 (except for two heritage routes which operated until 2014 and 2019 respectively), in favour of a fully accessible one-man-operated modern fleet (including articulated buses), none of which featured a rear open platform. The withdrawal of the Routemaster became an issue during the 2008 London mayoral election with Boris Johnson elected mayor with a campaign pledge being to introduce a new Routemaster. Following an open design competition in 2008, Wrightbus was awarded the contract to build the bus at the end of 2009, and the final design was announced in May 2010.
The design for the new double-decker bus was inspired by the original AEC Routemaster, and features three doors and two staircases to allow accessible boarding. Unlike the AEC Routemaster, the new bus has a full front end rather than the protruding, bonneted half cab design, and a rear platform with a door that can be closed, rather than being permanently open. The layout of the new bus allows it to be operated by the driver alone. The cost of each bus was ?355,000 over the four-year procurement period. The last of the 1,000 New Routemasters was delivered in December 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WEG8 - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDTJ - This image shows the entrance to Greenwich Pier, a key River Thames passenger pier located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, South East London. The prominent blue signage identifies the pier as part of London's integrated river transport network, used by both commuters and visitors travelling along the Thames.
Greenwich Pier is served by TfL River Bus services operated by Thames Clippers, linking Greenwich with central London destinations such as Westminster, Embankment, and Canary Wharf. River transport plays an increasingly important role in London's public transport system, offering an alternative to road and rail travel while also supporting tourism along the Thames corridor.
The modern pier building features a curved glass frontage, with people visible entering and exiting the terminal. Pedestrians in the foreground highlight the pier's dual role as both a commuter hub and a gateway for tourists visiting nearby attractions including Greenwich town centre, the Cutty Sark, and the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
Photographed in daylight under clear skies, the image captures the everyday activity of London's river transport infrastructure. It is well suited to editorial use covering public transport, sustainable travel, London tourism, riverside development, urban mobility, and life along the River Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAB17 - The Alexander Dennis Enviro200 (previously known as the TransBus Enviro200) is a midibus that was manufactured by TransBus International and later Alexander Dennis between 2003 and 2018. The original TransBus Enviro200 design was innovative but ultimately unsuccessful, with few being sold before the introduction of the second generation Enviro200 (originally referred to as the Enviro200 Dart) revived sales for the product from 2006. It was supposed to be positioned in between a minibus and a rigid single-decker bus.
The Enviro200 was originally designed to be the replacement for the Dennis Dart SLF chassis and Alexander ALX200 and Plaxton Pointer 2 bodies. The Enviro200 MMC was launched in 2014, eventually replacing the original Enviro200 and Enviro300, which went out of production in 2018 and 2016 respectively

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBK - This image shows a yellow Dogs Trust dog ambulance van parked in a public car park. The vehicle carries prominent Dogs Trust branding and the long-established slogan A dog is for life, which reflects the charity's core message promoting responsible dog ownership and lifelong commitment to pets.
Dog ambulance vans form a vital part of Dogs Trust's operational fleet, providing safe and secure transport for dogs between rescue centres, veterinary facilities, foster placements, and rehoming locations. These vehicles are specially adapted to ensure animal welfare during transit and are used across the UK as part of the charity's rescue and support services.
Dogs Trust is the UK's largest dog welfare charity and plays a major role in dog rehoming, education, and animal protection. The visibility of branded vehicles such as this helps raise public awareness of dog welfare issues while supporting practical, frontline rescue work.
Photographed in overcast, wet conditions, the image offers a realistic, documentary view of everyday charity operations. It is well suited for editorial use covering animal welfare, rescue services, charity logistics, pet ownership responsibility, and the role of voluntary organisations in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PPBX - This image shows a WeBuyAnyCar concession kiosk positioned within the car park of a Morrisons supermarket in Stockton Heath, Warrington. The small standalone unit features the company's distinctive green and white branding and promotes on-the-spot vehicle valuation and purchasing services for members of the public.
WeBuyAnyCar operates a nationwide network of kiosks and pods, often located in supermarket car parks and retail parks, allowing customers to sell used vehicles quickly without visiting traditional dealerships. The model reflects broader changes in the UK motor trade, where convenience, speed, and digital pricing tools increasingly shape consumer behaviour.
Supermarket-based concessions such as this illustrate how everyday retail locations have diversified to include financial, automotive, and service-based offerings. For shoppers, the co-location of food retail and car-buying services highlights the growing role of supermarkets as multifunctional community hubs.
Photographed in daylight with no customers present, the image provides a clear documentary view of contemporary UK consumer services and roadside retail infrastructure. It is well suited for editorial use covering the used car market, retail diversification, consumer behaviour, and the changing character of out-of-town shopping environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28BJ - Emirates (Arabic: ???????????? ????????????? DMG: ?ayarn Al-Imrt) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Etihad). Based in Garhoud, Dubai, the airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. As of 2019, it was also the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from its hub at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. It operates to more than 150 cities in 80 countries across all continents (except Antarctica) through its fleet of nearly 300 aircraft. Cargo activities are undertaken by Emirates SkyCargo.
Emirates is the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown, and the second-largest in terms of freight tonne-kilometers flown.
During the mid-1980s, Gulf Air began to cut back its services to Dubai. As a result, Emirates was conceived on 15 March 1985, with backing from Dubai's royal family, with Pakistan International Airlines giving two of the airline's first aircraft. With $10 million in start-up capital, it was required to operate independently of government subsidy. Pakistan International Airlines provided free training facilities to Emirates' cabin crew at Karachi airport. The airline was headed by Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the airline's present chairman. In the years following its founding, the airline expanded both its fleet and its destinations. In October 2008, Emirates moved all operations at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3.
Emirates operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing wide-body aircraft, and is one of the few airlines to operate an all-wide-body aircraft fleet (excluding Emirates Executive). As of December 2021, Emirates is the largest Airbus A380 operator with 119 aircraft in service, and with one aircraft having been retired. Since its introduction, the Airbus A380 has become an integral part of the Emirates fleet, especially on long-haul, high-density routes

BY DAVID SKENTELBERY ON 19TH JANUARY 2018 7:00 AMNEWS, VILLAGE LIFE
A PUBLIC roadshow will be held at Stockton Heath's Sandy Lane Community Centre on Wednesday, February 28 to highlight widespread improvements to bus services in South Warrington.
Bus company Network Warrington is to introduce the Cheshire Cat ? a newly branded network that will service the area south of the Ship Canal, starting later this year.
The changes will see buses in the south network simplified, improved and will also see the introduction of a new, cutting-edge bus fleet.
Cheshire Cat branded buses will include the latest transport essentials, including WiFi, skylights, extra leg room, comfy seats and USB charging points.
Network Warrington managing director Ben Wakerley said: I'm pleased that we're making big improvements to the south network that will hopefully have our customers purring. These are truly buses to be seen on!
This latest round of improvements follow our Dallam discount, hospital frequency increase, Pops network and ??1.70 to Westy' initiatives, and I can't wait to unveil this further improvement.
We will be introducing 13 new vehicles onto the Cheshire Cat network to ensure that our fleet remains modern, fit for purpose and achieves improvements for the environment.
Cllr Ian Marks, Lymm North & Thelwall, was pleased about the prospect of network improvements, adding: I'm looking forward to seeing the positive changes delivered by Network Warrington and the proposed routing, giving better connections.
The improvements will be announced in full at the roadshow which will also give residents the chance to comment on the service changes before they are officially confirmed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTRT3W - Strangeways, Here We Come is the fourth and final studio album by English rock band the Smiths. It was released on 28/09/1987 by Rough Trade Records, several months after the group had disbanded. All of the songs were composed by Johnny Marr, with lyrics written and sung by Morrissey.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying in the chart for 17 weeks. The album also became an international success, peaking at number 16 in the European Albums Chart
from sales covering the 18 major European countries, staying in that chart for nine weeks. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 October 1987 and also by the Recording Industry Association of America on 19 September 1990
The album takes its title from Manchester's notorious Strangeways Prison (now called HM Prison Manchester), whilst the line Borstal, here we come is taken from the novel Billy Liar. Strangeways, of course, is that hideous Victorian monstrosity of a prison operating 88 to a cell, Morrissey has said

schedule - payment dates
A new survey of public attitudes to NHS dentistry shows that half of the adults in England find dental charges unfair amid escalating living costs. We have warned decision-makers that NHS dentistry is in desperate need of reform.
With living costs on the rise, our new findings show that health inequalities are widening as people in every part of the country struggle to pay for dental care.
When people find it hard to access NHS dental care, they feel pressured to go private, which is not an option for many. And even NHS charges can be hard for some to afford.
A representative poll of 2,026 adults based in England found nearly half (49%) of respondents, who had an opinion about NHS charges, felt NHS dental charges were unfair.
What are people saying?
The poll, which looked at people's experiences of NHS dentistry, including costs associated with dental care, found the following:
54% of people who had an NHS dentist appointment, had a problem. Of these, more than three in five (63%) respondents found it difficult to book an appointment. More than three in ten (31%) couldn't access all the treatments they needed.
46% of people who had an NHS dentist appointment, had issues with the costs associated with their NHS dental care. Of these:
More than a third (34%) of respondents said they had to pay privately to get all the required treatment
nearly a quarter (24%) reported they felt pressured to pay privately when they booked their dental appointment. Similar numbers (24%) said their NHS dentist didn't explain the costs before starting treatment
nearly one in five (17%) reported that their NHS dentist charged more for the treatments than the advertised NHS charges
Widening health inequalities
The shortage of NHS appointments has hit people on low incomes hardest, meaning they are less likely to have dental treatment than those on higher incomes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAGDAH - Mine rescue or mines rescue is the specialised job of rescuing miners and others who have become trapped or injured in underground mines because of mining accidents, roof falls or floods and disasters such as explosions.
Altofts Colliery manager, W.E. Garforth suggested using a gallery to test rescue apparatus and train rescuers in 1899 and one was built at his pit in Altofts West Yorkshire. It cost ?13,000. He also suggested the idea of a network of rescue stations. The first British mines rescue station opened at Tankersley in 1902. It was commissioned by the West Yorkshire Coal Mine Owners Association.[8] Its building is grade II listed.
In the United Kingdom a series of disasters in the 19th century brought about Royal Commissions which developed the idea of improving mine safety. The commissions influenced the Coal Mines Act of 1911 which made the provision of rescue stations compulsory. By 1919 there were 43 stations in the UK but as the coal industry declined from the last quarter of the 20th century many were closed, leaving six as of 2013, at Crossgates in Fife, Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear, Kellingley at Beal in North Yorkshire, Rawdon in Derbyshire, Dinas at Tonypandy in Glamorgan and at Mansfield Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire. The MRS Training centre at Houghton-le-Spring opened in 1913 is one of the six surviving British rescue stations which are operated by MRS Training and Rescue. It is a Grade II listed building.
Mines rescue featured in the 1952 film The Brave Don't Cry which was a testimony to the Knockshinnoch disaster. Mine rescuers have often been recognised in Britain by the award of gallantry medals.
In Britain, mines rescue teams may be called to investigate holes in the ground that have appeared because of land surface subsidence into old mineshafts and mine workings

It is located on the former Caledonian Railway main line between Glasgow and Perth. It is the junction for the branch line to Alloa and Dunfermline via Kincardine and is also served by trains on the Edinburgh to Dunblane Line and long-distance services to Dundee and Aberdeen and to Inverness via the Highland Main Line.
The station building was constructed in 1915 by James Miller, and is listed by Historic Environment Scotland as a Category A listed building. His design continues the circular spaces and flowing curves of his celebrated Wemyss Bay station.
The station houses a Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) from the British Transport Police. Currently two officers work from Stirling and cover Stirling, Alloa, Bridge of Allan, Camelon, Dunblane, Falkirk High, Falkirk Grahamston and Larbert.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR76 - Stirling railway station is a railway station located in Stirling, Scotland.
The Stirling Area Command of the Forth Valley Division of Police Scotland cover the territorial area the Stirling NPT cover and will assist when the BTP officers are not available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJMR - Get ready for Brexit' advertising campaign launches
An information campaign urging the public to get ready for Brexit has been launched by the government.
The campaign began on Sunday with the launch of a website, gov.uk/brexit.
Billboards and social media adverts will appear in the coming days and TV adverts will air later this month.
Michael Gove, who is in charge of no-deal plans, said the adverts encourage shared responsibility for preparing to leave the EU on 31 October.
It has been reported that the campaign could cost as much as ?100m as ministers seek to inform people what they might need to do, if anything, ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, it has emerged the EU is considering classifying no deal as a major disaster, like an earthquake, in order to free up funds for countries affected.
Benedict Pringle, author of the politicaladvertising.co.uk blog, said that, if true, the ?100m budget would be roughly double what the National Lottery spends on advertising each year.
So if you think about how often you see a lottery advert and double it, that's how much we could be seeing the campaign over the next two months, he told the BBC.
At football grounds, in advert breaks for Coronation Street and The Great British Bake Off, this is where you'll get the biggest reach with the public.
Media captionMichael Gove: 'Everyone will have the food they need'
What does the campaign involve?
An image showing one of the campaign's billboards was issued by the Cabinet Office ahead of their rollout this week.
Leaflets, online seminars, and information stands at events will also be used.
British citizens who are intending to travel to Europe and businesses which export to the EU are among the specific groups targeted by the campaign.
The campaign encourages people and businesses to visit the government website to answer questions and receive advice on preparing for Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF61J - Black Maria
These vehicles were usually painted black or a very dark blue. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States, a police wagon was also sometimes called a Black Maria (/m???ra?/ m?-RY-?). The origin of this term is equally uncertain. The name Black Maria is common for race horses beginning with an 1832 appearance in Niles Weekly Register (Oct. 10) and then again in Colburn's New Monthly Magazine and Humorist (1841). The OED lists the first usage as the Boston Evening Traveller from 1847 which mentions them as a new type of wagon. An example from Philadelphia was published in 1852. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable suggests the name came from Maria Lee, a large and fearsome black keeper of a sailors' boarding house whom the police would call on for help with difficult prisoners. The French detective novel Monsieur Lecoq, published in 1868 by ??mile Gaboriau, uses the term Black Maria when referring to a police van. In his 1949 song Saturday Night Fish Fry, Louis Jordan mentions a Black Maria.
The term is still used today in parts of Britain for the vehicle that transports prisoners from gaol to court, appearing in the songs Guns of Brixton by The Clash, Singing for the Lonely by Robbie Williams, The Curse of Millhaven by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Adios Hermanos by Paul Simon. Frequently, blackened-windowed buses are also used for the same purpose.[8] In the 1950s, many police forces in the United Kingdom, including the Metropolitan Police, used half-ton Morris Commercial vans, painted black, as Black Marias.[citation needed]
The term also exists in Norwegian, where the same vehicle is called maja or svartemaja (alt. -marje, -marja), originating from Black Maria, in Icelandic as Svarta Mar??a and in Finnish as mustamaija. In Serbian, Croatian and Slovene, it is marica (with a small m), while Marica with a capital M is a diminutive of several female names.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98KG - The 1975 are an English pop rock band from Manchester, consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew Matty Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel. Their choice of name was inspired by a Jack Kerouac beat poetry book.
The band's origins trace to their attendance at Wilmslow High School in Cheshire and playing together as teenagers in 2002. Gigs organised by a council worker led the band to formally sign with Dirty Hit and Polydor Records. The band opened for several major acts and released a series of extended plays (Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars, IV) throughout 2012 before releasing their self-titled debut album (2013), which included the popular singles Sex, Chocolate, and Robbers, to a positive reception, reaching number one in the United Kingdom.
Their second album, I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it (2016), reached number one in the US and UK and received further acclaim from critics. Following the touring cycle for the record, the band announced their third album under the working title of Music for Cars, before going on hiatus again throughout 2017.
Returning in 2018, the band announced that the album had evolved into their third campaign cycle, consisting of their third and fourth studio albums. The first, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (2018), was released to critical praise, and became their third number one album in the UK. The second, Notes on a Conditional Form (2019), is due for release in May.

The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018.
The main depot and offices for Warrington's Own Buses are located on Wilderspool Causeway at the junction with Chester Road.
The two main sheds to the rear of the site were originally built in 1943 for Fairey Aviation and used to assemble wings for their Fulmar bomber until they were purchased by Warrington Corporation in 1947. The ground floor consists of a reception area and vehicle inspection bays, with the company's offices on the upper floor.
The Travel Centre on the main concourse at Warrington Bus Interchange provides for season ticket sales and information. Other facilities are located here for driving and supervisory staff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFFA - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways. Seven new Supercharging stations, all located at motorway service stations, are now in the process of being built, with more coming soon.
Heretofore, Tesla's somewhat anaemic Supercharger roll-out in the UK had mostly been located in cities
not exactly the ideal place to charge up your car for a long-distance drive. Some Superchargers were located near a motorway or main road, but not in motorway service stations.
As reported by Engadget, the dearth of motorway Superchargers was apparently due to a legal dispute between Tesla and Ecotricity, a UK-based company that already had a large number of electric vehicle charging points across the country, including exclusivity deals at motorway service stations.
According to a few newspaper and website reports, Tesla approached Ecotricity prior to the launch of right-hand-drive Model S in the UK, to try and strike some kind of deal to get Supercharging stations into motorway service stations. Seemingly, at some point that deal turned sour, with Ecotricity's founder saying back in May 2014 that this is nothing more than an attempted smash and grab raid. Soon after, both companies hunkered down in litigation land, suing and countersuing each other. This week they finally reached an out-of-court settlement.
Yesterday, somewhat suspiciously and/or coincidentally, both Tesla and Ecotricity published very similar blog posts. Neither post referenced the other company, instead focusing on their commitment to grow their UK electric vehicle charging networks. While the details of the settlement are confidential, given that Tesla is now allowed to build Superchargers at motorway service stations, it would appear to have got its way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWFM - South West Trains (SWT) is a British train operating company owned by Stagecoach Group operating the South Western franchise.
It operates the majority of commuter services from its Central London terminus at London Waterloo to South West London as well as most outer suburban/regional services in Surrey, Hampshire and Dorset. It also provides regional services in Devon, Somerset, Berkshire, and Wiltshire and on the Isle of Wight. The area of operation, essentially the former South Western division of Network SouthEast, is also roughly that of the pre-1923 London and South Western Railway (excluding everything west of Exeter). The Stagecoach Group took over the franchise on the privatisation of British Rail in 1996 and retained it in 2004 and again in 2007 making it, along with Chiltern Railways, Virgin Trains and First Great Western, the longest-running franchise. It is a particularly complex operation due to the large number and variety of services.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T0X - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment ? a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance ? would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T28 - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6HY59 - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England. The network consists of six lines which radiate from Manchester city centre and terminate at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, Didsbury, Eccles, and Rochdale. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP In 2013/14, 29.2 million passenger journeys were made on the system, also known as Manchester Metrolink.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester was borne of Greater Manchester County Council's obligations to provide an integrated and efficient system of public transport under its structure plan and the Transport Act 1968. Greater Manchester's public transport network suffered from poor north?south connections, exacerbated by the location of Manchester's main railway stations, Piccadilly and Victoria, which were unconnected and lay at opposite edges of central Manchester. Abandoning the monorail and underground options conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, light rail was proposed in 1982 as the best and most economical public transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area, and gathered support throughout the 1980s as an appropriate integrated commuter service.
Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992. This founded the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system and its second operational public tram system, the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had endured up to Metrolink's creation.
Metrolink has 77 stops along 48.5 miles (78.1 km) of standard-gauge track routed through seven of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. The system has a mix of designated light railway (segregated from other traffic) and on-street tramway.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCE7GB - London Bus Route 15.
This route and route 9 (Heritage) were announced initially as 'A' and 'B' as short workings on existing routes to avoid any potential complications in the future: from 2017 all services have to be operated by Disability Discrimination Act compliant vehicles or an alternative must exist to make the same journey by exactly the same means. The Mayor of London and Transport for London decided to have a deadline of 2006 for their own services with a few exceptions.
One of the two routes, awarded to Stagecoach London, was for services between Trafalgar Square and Tower Hill, covering the most touristy section of route 15 taking in the Tower of London, Monument, St Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square. An extension to the Oxford Street area was excluded due to severe congestion there. The number of the parallel route 15 was adopted for the Routemasters, despite potential for confusion with the main 15.
Ten buses were allocated to the operator
5 for the daily turnout, 3 operational spares and 2 as a strategic reserve. Despite having only a couple of weeks to prepare the vehicles after they left normal service, Stagecoach turned out 5 immaculately presented RMs for the first day launch, 14 November 2005. The first journey was driven by Peter Hendy, managing director of TfL surface transport.
In April 2008, one of the buses was painted in a special Indian Red and Silver livery, to promote Bow Garage's Centenary. It was first revealed at the LBPT's Cobham bus rally, and soon after entered regular service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HFDX - Sunset at the Ruins of St Columbas Church, Aignish, outside Stornoway Isle Of Lewis, Scotland
Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Le?dhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
St Columba's Church, Aignish, Isle of Lewis. The crofting village contains the historic Eye Church (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), a large pre-Reformation Church. The present church buildings are believed to be medieval, built during two separate construction phases. They were constructed on the site believed to be the cell of St. Catan, a contemporary of St. Columba. The church was the burial ground of the MacLeods of Lewis.
Saint Columba (7 December 521 ? 9 June 597 AD)?also known as Colum Cille (Old Irish, meaning dove of the church), Colm Cille (Irish), Calum Cille (Scottish Gaelic) and Kolban or Kolbj??rn (Old Norse, meaning black bear)?was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

A supermarket, a form of grocery store, is a self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments. It is larger in size and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, also selling items typically found in a convenience store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box store.
The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods departments, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. Most supermarkets also sell a variety of other household products that are consumed regularly, such as alcohol (where permitted), medicine, and clothes, and some stores sell a much wider range of non-food products.
The traditional suburban supermarket occupies a large amount of floor space, usually on a single level. It is usually situated near a residential area in order to be convenient to consumers. Its basic appeal is the availability of a broad selection of goods under a single roof, at relatively low prices. Other advantages include ease of parking and frequently the convenience of shopping hours that extend far into the evening or even 24 hours a day. Supermarkets usually allocate large budgets to advertising, typically through newspapers. They also present elaborate in-store displays of products. The stores are usually part of corporate chains that own or control (sometimes by franchise) other supermarkets located nearby?even transnationally?thus increasing opportunities for economies of scale.
Supermarkets typically are supplied by the distribution centres of their parent companies, usually in the largest city in the province.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EBFWFJ - South West Trains (SWT) is a British train operating company owned by Stagecoach Group operating the South Western franchise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHMM - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth ?13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFF9 - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDDPYK - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6J32W - Metrolink is a light rail system in Greater Manchester, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY9FD - Norton Canes services is a motorway service station on the M6 Toll, in the village of Norton Canes near the towns of Brownhills, Cannock, and Walsall, in Staffordshire, England. It is operated by RoadChef, who has a 25-year lease on the site. The company also uses the site as its head office
Norton Canes services is located on the M6 Toll between junctions T6 and T7, and is positioned so that it can be accessed before reaching the main toll plaza in either direction. It is a single-sided site, unlike a large majority of other service areas which have separate facilities for each direction. For this reason it is possible to do a U-turn at the services
however, it is not possible to avoid the toll in that way.
Unlike most other service areas, where it is illegal for traffic from local roads to use the back entrance to the site, provision has been made at Norton Canes for traffic from the A5 to access the services

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N8R - A local authority surveyor carries out roadside measurement work on a bypass road in the United Kingdom, using a Leica total station survey instrument mounted on a tripod. The surveyor is dressed in high-visibility protective clothing and gloves, reflecting standard safety requirements for working close to live traffic. A large vehicle passes in the background, captured with motion blur, emphasising both the speed of the traffic and the risk-managed nature of the work.
The image highlights the practical, front-line role of surveyors in maintaining and improving transport infrastructure. Such work underpins road design, maintenance, safety improvements and asset management carried out by local authorities and public bodies. The presence of the Leica surveying equipment points to modern digital measurement techniques used to collect accurate positional data for highways, junctions and roadside assets.
The roadside setting, blurred lorry and focused posture of the surveyor convey concentration, professionalism and situational awareness. This visual contrast between static precision equipment and fast-moving traffic reinforces themes of risk control, engineering discipline and public safety. The scene reflects the everyday reality of civil engineering and surveying work that often takes place unnoticed alongside busy roads.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering local government, transport infrastructure, road safety, public services, engineering and surveying professions, as well as commercial applications relating to construction, infrastructure planning, professional services, workplace safety and UK transport systems.
