It is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in the Parish of Leeds St George in the Diocese of Leeds. It was built in 1722?7, though its steeple dates from 1839. Holy Trinity is in the evangelical church tradition of the Church of England.
History and architecture
A 1714 proposal that a new church should be erected in central Leeds foundered for lack of subscribers, but, in 1722, Lady Elizabeth Hastings of Ledston, backed by leading merchants, revived the project, and the foundation stone of Holy Trinity was laid on 27 August 1722.
The architect of the church was for some time believed to be William Halfpenny. However, it has subsequently been discovered that his designs for the church, for which he was paid ?1 11s 6d on 8 May 1723, were never executed, and that the architect was William Etty of York. A letter from William Cookson to Ralph Thoresby dated 15 May 1723, enclosed a draught, the south front of our new church
it was drawn by Mr. Etty of York, who has also made us a wooden modell for our workmen to go by. Etty had been paid nineteen guineas in April of the same year for the model, which survived into the nineteenth century.
The west tower in Halfpenny's design was topped by a square, open colonnade with an obelisk-shaped spire. Etty did not envisage a spire, but a wooden one was later added by an unknown hand. Thomas Dunham Whitaker, Vicar of Whalley, Lancashire, in his Loidis and Elmete (1816), remarked of this spire: unquestionably one instance among many of private interference, by which the better judgment of real architects is often overruled, and for which they are unjustly considered as responsible. When the spire blew down in 1839, it was replaced by a taller stone steeple of three diminishing stages (architect: Robert Dennis Chantrell).
In 2020 a major refurbishment of the building was completed and will soon be home to a midweek ministry for city centre

It is 17 miles (27 kilometres) north-east of Manchester, 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Burnley and 9 miles (14 km) west of Halifax. In 2011, it had a population of 15,481.
Todmorden is at the confluence of three steep-sided Pennine valleys and is surrounded by moorlands with outcrops of sandblasted gritstone.
The historic boundary between Yorkshire and Lancashire is the River Calder and its tributary, Walsden Water, which run through the town. The administrative border was altered by the Local Government Act 1888 placing the whole of the town within the West Riding.
The town is served by Todmorden and Walsden railway stations.

Robert Clare Baxter was born into a poor family in Runcorn and started off working in a drapers at the weekend. He was later promoted to buyer and manager and the owner then helped him set up his own business.
In the early 20th century Clare's premises were occupied by Arthurs Pioneer Stores. Arthurs was taken over by WS Williams of Llanrwst who also owned the Loyal Store on the opposite side of Mostyn St. One of the shops 'main features was the variety of serge's and tweeds spun at Williams own factory in Dolgellau. These could be made up into whatever the customer required ? particulary boating, cycling and touring outfits for the ladies.
Clare's Department Store was established in 1927 by the Baxter family. Quickly built a reputation within the community for offering good, friendly reliable service to all their customers. Robert Clare Baxter rebuilt it as the present Clare's Department Store. It became a ladies dressmakers and milliners allowing customers to have access to a respectable fashion store.
When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann. The business was passed down and continued to operate as a family business. It remained successful and was continually growing and thriving.
Clare's Department Store was acquired by Ulster Stores in 2002. It was instantly recognised as an exciting opportunity for the future. The store is a well known destination not only for local shoppers but also for the many tourists who visit Llandudno. When Ulster Stores took over the Lamson Pneumatic Device was removed. This whizzed payment by tubes to the cash office and sent back the change. You can still see the original office windows at the back of the GF.
Clares has changed over the years and moved with the times and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JHFF - Exchange Flags is a Grade II listed building in Liverpool, England. It is laid out in a 'U' shape, with Walker House situated on the west side and Horton House on the east side. Walker House (formerly known as Derby House) was adapted during its construction to include a reinforced bunker that housed the Western Approaches Command Headquarters, the command centre for the campaign waged against the German submarine fleet during the Second World War. The courtyard faces Liverpool Town Hall and contains the Nelson Monument.
The current buildings sit on the same site of two previous exchanges in Liverpool. The building has eleven storeys and has a combination of flat and mansard roofs. Construction of the main building was completed in 1939 but the construction of Walker House was interrupted by the war. The inclusion of the reinforced bunker to house the command centre for the Battle of the Atlantic meant that Walker House wasn't finished until 1941.
The site was purchased in the late 1980s by Liverpool businessman Bill Davies, the former owner of Aintree Racecourse. The building was left largely empty until it was sold in two separate deals in 2006 and 2007. Shelbourne Asset Management bought the site in 2017 for ?42m and sold it to its current owners, Ashtrom, for ?68m in August 2019

The church building is a complex structure incorporating parts of the fabric of a medieval priory church dedicated to Holy Trinity and possibly an adjunct medieval parish church dedicated to St Nicholas (although this is disputed).
Holy Trinity was founded prior to the Norman invasion of 1066, and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of five great northern churches (alongside, amongst others, York Minster).
In around 1089 this church was re-founded by its new Norman lord as a Benedictine priory, served by a community of monks. It may be at that date a 'double church' was constructed, with one half (Holy Trinity) providing a place of worship for the monastic community and a second (dedicated to St Nicholas) providing religious services to the lay community of the parish.
Holy Trinity Today
Its parish today includes the former parishes of two neighbouring churches, St John and St Martin in Micklegate, which are now redundant as places of worship and have been put to other uses. All four of these churches originated in the Middle Ages, and their buildings are all listed monuments. They share a rich and long history extending back nearly two millennia.
Indeed what we see in the landscape of surviving church buildings in Micklegate is only part of a formerly more extensive religious topography in this neighbourhood of York. All Saints North Street and St Mary Bishophill Junior survive as active churches with independent parishes. The churches of St Gregory in Micklegate, St Clement in Clementhorpe and two suburban chapels of St James and St Mary, together with suburban hospitals dedicated to St Katherine and St Thomas all disappeared shortly after the Reformation, while the redundant church of St Mary Bishophill Senior was demolished in the 1960s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K96BJX - Occupying a roughly triangular site bounded by Birchfield Road, Mossley Road, and the railway, the foundation stone of the tram depot was laid by Alderman A W Chapman in July 1926 . Officially opened on 24 July 1928 by Councillor W Davy JP, Lord Mayor of Manchester, the car shed covered 17,000 square yards and provided accommodation for 230 trams. Trams entered through an arch at the centre of the Birchfields Road frontage 2.5 miles of track much of which was supported on iron columns Almost the entire floor was constructed 4 feet 6 inches below the track level for inspection purposes. Facilities included offices and stores, its own telephone exchange and entertainment hall where music was performed live. In 1947, conversion to a bus garage began. Birchfield Road formed the terminus for the last four trams to run in ceremonial procession from Piccadilly on 10 January 1949. The depot continued in use as a bus depot until 1986. Following its sale a few years later the building was demolished and the site redeveloped as a retail park.

The National Provincial Bank played a unique role in the development of commercial banking. Prior to the Act of 1826, English banks were permitted to have no more than six partners ? hence the expression private banks. The only banks allowed to be joint stock were the Bank of England and the Scottish banks (which operated under a different legal system). The leading campaigner for change was Thomas Joplin a Newcastle timber merchant with local experience of banking disasters and an observer of the greater stability of the nearby Scottish banks. The Act of 1826 permitted the establishment of joint stock banks but note issue was only allowed outside a radius of 65 miles of London.[3] The 1826 Act was followed by the creation of new provincial joint stock banks and conversions from existing private banks. Because of the prohibition on note issue in the London area, it was incorrectly assumed that the Act also prohibited joint stock banks themselves, an ambiguity that was removed by the Bank Charter Act 1833

Two storeys and basement, a symmetrical facade of 3 unequal bays, with pilasters, frieze inscribed CHEETHAM BRANCH MANCHESTER FREE LIBRARY ERECTED AD 1876, prominent cornice, parapet with balustraded centre and segmental-pedimented panelled upstands in the outer bays. Ground floor has square-headed doorway in centre, up a flight of steps protected by iron railings. The 1st floor has an arcaded range of 5 round-headed windows in the centre, and a square-headed window in each outer bay, with pedimented architrave. All windows now unglazed. Six-bay left return wall has coupled round-headed windows except the end bays which have pedimented architraves. The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. It has been called the Cathedral of South Cheshire and it is considered by some to be one of the finest medieval churches, not only in Cheshire, but in the whole of England. The building dates from the 14th century, although a number of changes have since been made, particularly a substantial 19th-century restoration by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The Market began in 1500. The market building used today dates from 1867. There is a Market on three days a week, and there are stalls inside and out. Nantwich is a busy shopping centre with many fine food, drink and clothing retailers.
Nantwich is an ancient settlement and there were Romans here. The ?wich' part of the name comes from salt, which the town remains famous for. The local salt springs were good for making salt, and in the 1900s were popular for health tourists. The town still has a popular heated outdoor brine swimming pool.

The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698

Lymm and Thelwall look set to become part of the Tatton constituency under a shakeup of England's electoral map.
The Boundary Commission for England has revealed a raft of proposed changes across the country, with just under 10 per cent of existing constituencies remaining unchanged.
In Warrington, the most drastic changes can be found in Warrington South ? which will lose Lymm and Thelwall to Tatton, currently held by Tory MP Esther McVey.
Warrington North is almost entirely unchanged, save for minor changes which will see the Westbrook Centre moved to Warrington South and part of Chetham Court at Winwick Quay ? home to businesses including Tenpin Warrington, formerly LA Bowl ? switched in the opposite direction.
Proposals are due to be implemented in 2023, and aim to ensure that each constituency has roughly the same number of voters

The cross dates from the early to mid-17th century and was restored in 1897. It is constructed of sandstone and stands on an artificially stepped natural outcrop of red sandstone. Its shaft stands in a square pavilion of red sandstone with square corner pillars. It has a stone roof with a pedimented gable to each face and ball finials. Above the cross is an extension which carries a stone ball and an ornate weather vane. On the east, south and west gables are bronze sundials of 1897 carrying the inscriptions We are a Shadow, Save Time and Think of the Last.

An emphatic statement of Civic pride and prosperity the City Chambers occupies the whole block site between George Square and John Street, its 4 facades all equally opulent in detail. Their style is eclectic, mainly rich Italianate with Roman and Venetian references, and some Flemish overtones. In 1912 Watson and Salmond built a large extension to the E linked by pairs of archways across John Street (see separate item). Each elevation is faced in light polished ashlar now stonecleaned, Polmaise and Unmore stone fronting a fireproof framework
INTERIOR: richly and elaborately detailed in the finest materials. The main hall or loggia has ceramic mosaic floor and vaults. Large stone doorcases give access to lower rooms, those to the staircases flanked by Mossman caryatids. Most elaborate is the stair to the Banqueting Hall using polychrome Brescia and black Irish marble and Numidian mosaics to the vaults. The Banqueting Hall (to the N) is a barrel vaulted double height room, decoration designed by Leiper with murals by the Glasgow Boys, Walton, Lavery, Henry and Roche. The decoration of the other rooms is hardly less opulent, the Council Chamber being the least ornate, with more sober mahogany panelling, a frieze of Tynecastle Tapestry and gilded ceiling with central dome.
Wylie and Lochead were responsible for much interior work, Stephen Adam for the glass. Sculptors were Mossman, Lawson, Farmer and Brindley, Charles Grassey and Edward Good. Ironwork was by George Adam.

Gogarty was born 17 August 1878 in Rutland Square, Dublin, the eldest child of Henry Gogarty, a well-to-do Dublin physician, and Margaret Gogarty (n??e Oliver), the daughter of a Galway mill owner. Three siblings (Henry, Mary, and Richard) were born later. Gogarty's father, himself the son of a medical doctor, had been educated at Trinity College and owned two fashionable homes in Dublin, which set the Gogartys apart from other Irish Catholic families at that time and allowed them access to the same social circles as the Protestant Ascendancy
As one of Dublin's medicos, Gogarty was known to be fond of public pranks and midnight carousing in the Kips, Dublin's red-light district. He had a talent for humorous and bawdy verse, which quickly made the rounds through the city, and sometimes composed mnemonic lyrics to aid his medical studies. He also enjoyed a highly successful cycling career before being banned from the tracks in 1901 for bad language, and between 1898 and 1901 he rescued at least four people from drowning. He became interested in Irish nationalism after meeting Arthur Griffith in 1899, and contributed propaganda pieces to The United Irishman over subsequent years
As a Sinn F??iner during the Irish War of Independence, Gogarty participated in a variety of anti-Black and Tan schemes, allowing his home to be used as a safe house and transporting disguised IRA volunteers in his car. Following the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, Gogarty sided with the pro-Treaty government (headed by his close friend Arthur Griffith) and was made a Free State Senator. When Griffith fell ill during the summer of 1922, Gogarty frequently attended his bedside. His death on 12 August 1922 had a profound effect on Gogarty

Exterior and fa??ade
St. Ann's original fa??ade was never completed above the first floor. In 1868, a competition was held for a new fa??ade, with the architectural firm of Lanyon, Lynn & Lanyon losing the commission to the Deanes, Thomas Newenham Deane and his father. The younger Deane, who had been involved with the creation of significant buildings at Oxford University, designed a neo-Romanesque front.[6] Described by one travel guide as amazingly ornate,[7] the fa??ade as it exists in the 21st century lacks some elements of Deane's original conception, most significantly the tallest tower

The Union Bank was an early joint stock bank in the industrial heartland of Lancashire, established in 1836 with a capital of ?6 million divided into 24,000 shares of ?25 each. Although the original intention of the Union Bank was to confine itself to Manchester, after twenty years this policy was changed, and its first branch opened at Knutsford in 1856. The bank flourished with the growth of industry and acquired several smaller banks in Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire. It became an affiliated bank within the Barclays Group in 1919, when 99% of its capital was acquired under an arrangement whereby Union Bank shareholders were given shares in Barclays to replace their Union Bank shares. This was Barclays' last major acquisition before the Treasury put a block on major banking mergers in 1920. DEREK Watson, who has died aged 69 following a short illness, was a man of many parts and arts. Those who knew the Edinburgh-born renaissance man as an actor performing under the name Derwent Watson at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow may not have been aware that Watson began his relationship with the Citz as a musical director on Christmas shows, becoming forever known thereafter as Uncle Derek.
Similarly, the youngsters watching Uncle Derek will not have known of Watson's passion for Wagner and other composers he was an authority on, penning several biographies on them, and slipping little classical passages into his compositions for the Citz's festive fare un-noticed. Nor might those who heard Watson give lectures on Wagner and others be aware of his long-standing role as proprietor of a bookshop in West Linton where he lived for more than 20 years, with both he and the shop immortalised in a novel by Alexander McCall Smith.
In 1994, having been a resident in West Linton for a decade, he opened Linton Books. Once he had retired from the theatre, the shop provided him with an alternative stage, ?playing' the proprietor of the shop to entertain customers. Book signings by authors included Alexander McCall Smith, whose second novel in the Sunday Philosophy Club series, Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, published in 2005, found the book's heroine Isabel Dalhousie visiting Derek in his capacity as bookseller. The shop itself featured during the unravelling of the story's mystery.
Being immortalised in such a way was the perfect compliment to Watson, who retained a curiosity for the finer things in life that went beyond his considerable intellect to draw out the fun beneath.

And according to that excellent site Grace's Guide to British Industrial History at the 1862 Exhibition in London and the 1867 Paris Exhibition Nairns Floorcloth came into its own and won the prizes.
In 1870 Nairn and Co built a six-storey factory in Kirkcaldy and by 1877 with the introduction of linoleum, Kirkcaldy soon became the largest producer of the new floorcovering in the world.
In the 1920s the family joined forces with a supplier in Erie, Pennsylvania, which manufactured a three-foot wide simulated wood grain product used to border area rugs and linoleum.
This product was known as Congoleum, because the asphalt materials used to make it came from the Belgian Congo in Africa.
The new company called itself Congoleum-Nairn.
Congoleum-Nairn continued to sell Congoleum Gold Seal Rugs and Nairn linoleum through the late 1930's, until its researchers started experimenting with a new material called vinyl.
However, further research into developing vinyl flooring was interrupted when World War II began.
Following the war, the company continued to grow in the rapidly expanding housing market of that period.
2008 Forbo-Nairn is now the UK's only linoleum manufacturer. Forbo-Nairn have their own website.

Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once home to Affleck & Brown, one of the city's principal department stores. A bar on the original site opened in 2015, under the Affleck & Brown name.
Affleck & Brown was started in the 1860s as a drapery business in Oldham Street. The store grew to occupy a whole block between Oldham Street, Church Street and Tib Street and become a full flung department store. The business had a good reputation as a credit draper and was known for a good range of cloth for home dressmaking as well as a furrier.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long-term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity, Affleck's Palace was a fashionable place to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes.

The Jewellery Quarter is Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, which produces 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. It is also home to the world's largest Assay Office, which hallmarks around 12 million items a year. Historically the Jewellery Quarter has been the birthplace of many pioneering advancements in industrial technology.
At its peak in the early 1900s the Jewellery Quarter employed over 30,000 people, however due to foreign competition and lack of demand, the industry declined throughout the 20th century. The area is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, whilst maintaining its urban fabric. Its historical importance has led to numerous conservation schemes and it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
A survey of 1553 named one of the first goldsmiths of Birmingham, Roger Pemberton. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Birmingham prospered from the Industrial Revolution and developed into a large industrial town, manufacturing a vast range of products, often from various metals. Many large foundries and glassworks attracted workers from all areas of Britain. A considerable trade developed in the manufacture of gilt buttons, cap badges, pins and small metal toys.
According to the Birmingham Directory of 1780, there were 26 jewellers at the time. Because the definition of a jeweller was not explained in the directory, it is thought that it may contain many irregularities and the number of actual jewellers may be lower. It is thought that by the start of the 19th century, there were around 12 jewellery manufacturing companies, employing approximately 400 people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYJ - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53? 25' 40 North, 1? 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Hitch was responsible for the stonework grotesques on the exterior, and for a considerable amount of similar work in wood in the interior. Callcott created the pattern for the larger copper relief scenes, representing the day to day activities of the friars. . . . It seems probable that Callcott went on working on those reliefs until shortly before his death in 1925, when the rather more prestigious Henry Poole took over, to produce the relief work in the Small Saloon Bar. One of Callcott's frieze-like panels, entitled Saturday Afternoon, was to be repeated on the screen wall, separating the Luncheon Bar from the Small Saloon Bar, although it looks quite different in its new form, because the figures are much more widely spaced out, and the coloured marbles in the second rendering give it more depth.
Of these artists, Hitch (1841-1935), deserves to be better known. Following an apprenticeship to Farmer and Brindley, he had a very long and distinguished career as a sculptor: his work can be found at Cardiff Castle, suggesting that he was probably a member of William Burges's workforce there, and also in many churches and cathedrals including Truro Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He was particularly associated with the architects W. D. Car??e and J. L. Pearson.
It is worth noting that the popular London Encyclopaedia disagrees about the dates and artists involved here, stating simply that the building was erected in 1875, the ground floor being remodelled in 1905 by H. Fuller Clark. The outside is covered with mosaics and carved figures by Henry Poole (1903).

The one you see today was constructed in 1821 and, thanks to surviving the Blitz completely intact, has become one of London's rare examples of original ornate Victoriana at its finest.
Uniquely, the pub is full of specially commissioned glasswork, with much of it thought to have been created by the renowned Walter Gibb and Sons of Blackfriars, using some of the most advanced engraving and etching techniques available at the time. While nobody is sure why there are so many mirrors, one theory is that they were deliberately commissioned by a local magistrate at the time in order to reduce the privacy of the pub's snugs, and therefore smiting the activity of local women of the night.
Whatever the reason, it has led to The Red Lion being described as 'a perfect example of the small Victorian gin palace at its best' by Architectural Review, and it really is a window into life in the late 19th century.

In the 1900's the North Bridge running between the New and Old Town's of Edinburgh was widened and as part of this expansion a 190 foot high tower was built, into which the Scotsman Newspaper moved their offices.
The building cost around ?500,000 and after the rest of the North Bridge extension was completed teamed with the Carlton directly opposite, it formed a imposing entrance to the Old Town.
The direct access from Market Street to the building was an ideal distribution outlet for the papers to be packed directly onto the trains at Waverley Station straight from the printing house that took up the entire basement. Across the middle floors of the building which is now home to some of the Scotsman's most luxurious rooms and suites were originally used for the editorial offices. What is today a stunning 2 floor Penthouse suite complete with its own Sauna used to be the Pigeon lofts where the news was sent far and wide across Scotland.
The Scotsman Newspaper was regarded as radical when it was first published but over the years it became Scotland's National Newspaper. It first opened its doors to the locals of Edinburgh for advertising in 1831 and what is today the North Bridge Brasserie was the original reception and trading rooms. With its stunning marble pillars and ornate balcony this room has witnessed much bartering and haggling over advertising costs. Today this stunningly majestic room is home to the Scotsman's Brasserie and bar offering a truly Scottish menu, imaginative cocktails and one of Edinburgh's largest collections of rare whiskeys.
In 2001 the Newspaper moved to their own purpose built offices in Holyrood whilst the stunning building was renovated into The Scotsman Hotel. Now with 56 rooms and 12 suites the hotel retained its originality and quirky features and this, along with the 5 star service we endeavor to deliver offers visitors a unique experience.

Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

Lanyon took as his source the medieval great halls of
England and the Oxbridge colleges, following the strict precedents of
the raised dais, oriel window, fireplace for the top table, and a
screened passage at the opposite end. These plans fell victim to the
original budget cuts
Lanyon's planned gallery was never built and
the panelling remained modest, the latter not helped by later
redecorations. All of this changed in 2000 with the restoration of the
Great Hall by Consarc Conservation, architects. The floor and dais
were replaced and the oriel window unblocked. New pitch pine
panelling and a screened passage with a gallery above, the
replacement of the missing end trusses, and the comprehensive
redecoration and installation of a new lighting system, have all
combined to create a warm, powerful and theatrical space at the
heart of the University. More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)
has been installed in the gallery.
