Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3J - This image shows a striking illuminated neon sign displaying the words Come and Worship, rendered in bright blue neon tubing and framed by a contrasting green neon border. The sign is located on Oldham Street in Manchester city centre, an area strongly associated with nightlife, independent music venues, bars, and alternative culture within the Northern Quarter.
The message presents a deliberate and thought-provoking contrast between religious language and its urban surroundings. Oldham Street is better known for live music, late-night venues, record shops, and street culture than overt expressions of faith, making the presence of a Christian worship message visually and culturally arresting. The glowing neon typography echoes commercial signage styles more commonly associated with entertainment or retail, blending religious invitation with the visual language of the night-time city.
Photographed at night, the sign's illumination stands out sharply against a dark background, emphasising the clarity of the text and the symbolic impact of faith displayed openly in a secular urban environment. The image reflects wider themes in contemporary British cities, including the coexistence of belief systems, the visibility of religion in public spaces, and the use of modern visual forms to communicate traditional spiritual messages.
This photograph has strong editorial relevance for themes of religion, belief, spirituality, urban culture, modern Britain, social commentary, and the interaction between faith and nightlife in city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXHHF4 - Like many areas across the country, Greater Manchester has illegal levels of air pollution on some local roads. Poor air quality affects everyone's health, particularly the most vulnerable people in society. That includes deprived communities, children, elderly people and those with chronic conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. It contributes to nearly 1,200 premature deaths in Greater Manchester every year.
We're committed to cleaning up the air our residents breathe. We plan to do this in a way that encourages a change to cleaner vehicles without putting jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk.
Why no Clean Air Zone?
You might have seen signs for a Clean Air Zone on our roads. That's because our first Clean Air Plan included plans for a Greater Manchester-wide category C charging Clean Air Zone.
But following the pandemic, government agreed that this charging Clean Air Zone would NOT be introduced on 30 May 2022.
That's because the pandemic resulted in significant vehicle supply chain issues, rising vehicle prices, and a cost-of-living crisis. The original Clean Air Plan was no longer the right solution and could have caused significant financial hardship.
At the same time, it would not have met the government's legal direction (issued before the pandemic) to tackle harmful nitrogen dioxide on local roads by 2024.
Our new investment-led plan does not include a charging-Clean Air Zone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JBG - The large central drum is the main carding cylinder, which rotates at speed.
The multiple small pulleys around the side are part of the belt-driven transmission, typical of Lancashire mills using line-shaft power from overhead shafts.
The wooden casing (often polished hardwood) is characteristic of British carding engines, both for protection and to reduce lint escape.
Surrounding rollers and covers would have worked with:
the licker-in (to open raw cotton),
worker and stripper rollers (to disentangle fibres),
and the doffer (to remove the aligned fibre web).
What it did in the cotton process
This machine sat early in the cotton production line:
Raw cotton arrived compressed and dirty
It was opened and cleaned (blow room machinery)
Carding engine aligned the fibres into a continuous web
The web was condensed into sliver, ready for drawing and spinning
Without carding, spinning simply did not work properly.
Why it's so Lancashire
Carding engines were ubiquitous in Lancashire mills (Oldham, Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley, Preston).
British makers such as Platt Brothers of Oldham dominated this machinery worldwide.
The heavy iron castings, belt drives, and polished woodwork are textbook North-West England mill engineering.

It has an ornate tower with a terracotta Arts and Crafts details and parapet and is topped by a copper dome and finial. The mill was used for carding on the lower three floors and spinning on the upper. The carding floors have large nine-light rectangular windows separated by narrow brick piers while the spinning floors have narrower windows and brick panels. The mill's hoist tower is a single window wide capped by the mill's name BUTTS in white tiles. It was designed as a double mill but only half was built.[29] The 150,000 mule spindles were supplied by Dobson & Barlow of Bolton and its 2500 hp engine was by Carels Fr??res of Ghent in Belgium.[30]
Ceased spinning in 1960, the mill was later sold to Ward and Goldstone.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF68B - This new mural is our Manc tribute to those killed in the Manchester Arena attack.
The huge image of 22 Manchester worker bees has been emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Each bee, pictured swarming around a honey heart, represents one of the innocent people killed in the horrific attack.
It has been completed over last weekend by graffiti artist Russell Meeham , also know as ?Qubek'. As word spread about the work of art taking shape people came past to see what he was doing. When the last bee was competed it drew a round of applause.

Two days after the attack, Russ painted the old toilet block in Stevenson Square with bees and two hands joined together in a heart.
It prompted the M.E.N to commission him to create the mural.
Working from atop a cherry picker armed with dozens of cans of spray paint and some music, Russ spent two days creating his masterpiece.
Cafe bosses have previously turned down all requests for it to be used for a mural but kindly agreed to this one.
Speaking as he worked on his mammoth tribute Russ said: It's simple but effective, without being too morbid. Everyone will know why we've painted it and it's nice to have been involved in the project.

I did a piece following the bombing to put a positive message out there to represent the community in Manchester and a tribute to those who lost their lives that wasn't too morbid.
It got people talking and, from what I saw, brightened a lot of people's days.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF69H - Located on Oldham Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter, The Castle Hotel is a prestigious, lively and popular bar with a long history dating all the way back to 1776.
Over the course of a century the pub changed name several times, trading first as The Crown and Sceptre, then The Crown and Anchor and later The Clock Face. In the late nineteenth century, the pub was acquired by Kay's Atlas Brewery and started a new chapter as The Castle Hotel and then, in the early 1930s, Frederic Robinson took over Kay's Atlas Brewery and, consequently, The Castle Hotel.
But there's much more to The Castle than just a lively city centre pub
in 2010 the music hall was unveiled ? an 80 capacity live music venue and performance space which has since firmly cemented The Castle Hotel as one of the cornerstones of Manchester's live music scene.
As well as working with established and longstanding promoters from Manchester and beyond, The Castle prides itself on being a welcoming, supportive space and a creative hub for the city's grassroots artistic communities
with many now successful bands, artists, performers and promoters cutting their teeth within its walls.
This rare combination of heritage, location and ethos sees The Castle boast a packed calendar of live music, spoken word, comedy, theatre, film screenings, exhibitions and much more on almost every night of the week.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252F - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once occupied by a department store called Affleck and Brown as a store and office space, hence the name.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity
Affleck's Palace was a fashionable spot to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes of the time.
On 31 March 2008, Affleck's Palace ceased trading. It re-opened on 1 April 2008 as Afflecks under new management. Afflecks is now managed by Mancunian property developer Bruntwood after the expiry of a 25-year lease in 2007. It had been previously suggested that Bruntwood would redevelop the building, possibly leading to its closure as a market, with many traders having feared that closure would be likely and that notice could have been given as soon as the end of January

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ792K - Christopher Mark Sievey (25 August 1955 ? 21 June 2010) was an English musician and comedian known for fronting the band The Freshies in the late 1970s and early 1980s and for his comic persona Frank Sidebottom from 1984 onwards.
Sievey, under the guise of Sidebottom, made regular appearances on North West television throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, even becoming a reporter for Granada Reports. Later, he presented Frank Sidebottom's Proper Telly Show in B/W for the Manchester-based television station Channel M. Throughout his career, Sidebottom made appearances on radio stations such as Manchester's Piccadilly Radio and on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 5, alongside Mark and Lard.

SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace. The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 6357454651 - 'A cold evening in Oldham, with the town centre being dug up, a classic back catalog from the early JD &
Warsaw days. What more could you ask for? A special warm up for a unique tour.
Well I saw Joy Division a couple of times, the same number of times I have been to see the memoral to Ian Curtis in Macclesfield. You can be forgiven for expecting a lot.
I have got to say, Hooky and The Light made a good job of it. The Castle reminded me of the Russell Club in Hulme, it just needed lower ceilings. Down to about 7'.
Rowetta was here too. The EP containing unreleased Joy Division track ‘Pictures In My Mind’, ‘Atmosphere’ plus Rowetta’s versions of ‘New Dawn Fades’ and ‘Insight’ are worth a download, see www.fac51thehacienda.com/node/2088
Everything sounded raw, stripped down. Particularly the Closer album tracks, the young folks will only know them with the Hannett gloss of polished production.
Hooky's voice is slightly rough and Mancunian too. He needed some pages of his lyric book. Theres no robotic dancing either, and not so much bass playing. He leaves much to Jack, although rips into it as an axe-man when he gets in the mood. Breaks a string too on the Eccleshall Viking 1 (in Red with Cream Binding), so then it becomes more of a prop.
Rowetta's 'Atmosphere' was a highlight for me. Maybe all along that track needed female vocals.
Overall Hooky did good. He wrote this stuff, its in his soul. Thats why he wants to tour and share it, he is certainly not doing for the cash!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ799J - From the Ben Robinson interview,Afflecks Palace In Pieces Once More
SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX8F - View of the Northern Quarter of Manchester City Centre from eight floors up, near the CIS building.
The image shows Shudehill, High Street, bus/tram interchange, looking towards high street and the Arndale shopping centre. The Manchester wheel is visible as is the Piccadilly area, including hotel and commercial offices.
The Northern Quarter (N4[1] or NQ[2]) is an area of Manchester City Centre, England, generally marked out between Piccadilly, Victoria and Ancoats, and centred around Oldham Street, just off Piccadilly Gardens.
A centre of alternative and bohemian culture, the area is usually considered to be contained within Newton Street (borders with Piccadilly Basin), Great Ancoats Street (borders with Ancoats), Back Piccadilly (borders with Piccadilly Gardens) and Swan Street/High Street (borders with Shudehill/Arndale). Popular streets include Oldham Street, Tib Street, Newton Street, Lever Street, Dale Street, Hilton Street and Thomas Street.
The Northern Quarter is part of a larger area of Greater Manchester that is on a tentative list of nominated sites for UNESCO World Heritage Site Status, a position held since 1999.
