It was founded in January 1833 at Palace Green by a 160 volume donation by the then Bishop of Durham, William Van Mildert, and now holds over 1.6 million printed items. Since 1937, the university library has incorporated the historic Cosin's Library, founded by Bishop Cosin in 1669. Cosin's Library and the Sudan Archive held at Palace Green Library are designated collections under Arts Council England's Designation Scheme for collections of national and international significance

Cosin's Library was established in 1669 by Bishop John Cosin. The building was built in 1667?69 by the Quaker architect John Langstaffe specifically to house Cosin's collection of over 5,000 books.
Expansion on Palace Green
The university library initially used the new gallery installed in Cosin's Library. However, after it received Martin Routh's library in 1855 this space proved insufficient and it expanded into the upper floor of the Exchequer Building next door. Additional donations came from Bishop Edward Maltby in 1856 and Thomas Masterman Winterbottom in 1859.

The Library is the permanent home to the Brian Boru harp which is a national symbol of Ireland, a copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic, and the Book of Kells. One of the four volumes of the Book of Kells is on public display at any given time. The volumes and pages shown are regularly changed

The Library proper occupies several buildings, six of which are at the Trinity College campus itself, with another part of the Trinity Centre at St James's Hospital, Dublin:
The oldest library building, now known as the Old Library, is Thomas Burgh's magnum opus. Construction began in 1712. A large building which took twenty years to complete in its original form, it towered over the university and city after its completion in 1732. Even today, surrounded by similarly scaled buildings, it is imposing and dominates the view of the university from Nassau Street. The Book of Kells is located in the Old Library, along with the Book of Durrow, the Garland of Howth and other ancient texts. Also incorporating the Long Room, the Old Library is one of Ireland's biggest tourist attractions and holds thousands of rare, and in many cases very early, volumes. In the 18th century, the college received the Brian Boru harp, one of the three surviving medieval Gaelic harps, and a national symbol of Ireland, which is now housed in the Library
The Library began with the founding of Trinity College in 1592. In 1661, Henry Jones presented it with the Book of Kells

panelling and a screened passage with a gallery above, the
replacement of the missing end trusses, and the comprehensive
redecoration and installation of a new lighting system, have all
combined to create a warm, powerful and theatrical space at the
heart of the University. More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)
has been installed in the gallery.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4524488474 - '12 and 14 Nicolson Square are lovely old buildings in the old town of Edinburgh with distinctive old faded painted sign remnants in red. The square originally contained the properties of Sir James Nicolson, back pre-1800. Older maps reveal this at that time to probably be the extent of the city. Nearby Cabbagehall and Turnip Fields would have once produced food but were built over as the metropolis expanded. Nicholas Martinot looks to have been a prominent manufacturer of baskets and importer of other goods from 1890 or so onwards.
The text on the faded paint advertise 'Fancy Leathergoods' , 'Basket Manufacture', Rugs, Mats, walking Sticks, Hardware and Woodenware.
The Edinburgh Gazette of 1890 and 1892 note two 'bankrupt sequestrations' in which Martinot was elected joint commissioners. In issue 10128 (25th Feb 1890) page 180 they are involved in sequestration of Daniel S Johnston, fancy goods merchant at 103 Kirkgate and 131 Great Junction St Leith. In another issue 10363 the sequestration of a hardware, toy and Smallware merchant from 272 Canongate and 15 St Mary Street is involved ( www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/10128/pages/180 &
www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/10364/pages/670 ).
The building is now used by Edinburgh University, School of Arts, Culture &
Environment and the facilty is named Alison House.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDBH - The John Rylands Library is a late-Victorian neo-Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester, England. The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands.[4] The John Rylands Library and the library of the University of Manchester merged in July 1972 into the John Rylands University Library of Manchester. Special collections built up by both libraries were progressively concentrated in the Deansgate building.
The special collections, believed to be among the largest in the United Kingdom,[5] include medieval illuminated manuscripts and examples of early European printing, including a Gutenberg Bible, the second largest collection of printing by William Caxton,[6] and the most extensive collection of the editions of the Aldine Press of Venice.[7] The Rylands Library Papyrus P52 is believed to be the earliest extant New Testament text. The library holds personal papers and letters of notable figures, among them Elizabeth Gaskell and John Dalton.
The architectural style is primarily neo-Gothic with elements of Arts and Crafts Movement in the ornate and imposing gatehouse facing Deansgate which dominates the surrounding streetscape. The library, granted Grade I listed status in 1994, is maintained by the University of Manchester and open for library readers and visitors.
