Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE73C - The King's Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, is shown under clear blue skies, revealing the scale and architectural detail of the historic royal complex. The gallery forms part of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland, and sits at the end of Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile. Built in warm-toned stone, the structure combines defensive elements, classical proportions and later architectural additions, reflecting centuries of royal occupation and ceremonial use.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse has long been associated with Scottish and British history, serving as a residence for monarchs including Mary, Queen of Scots, and continuing today as a venue for state occasions and royal events. The King's Gallery houses exhibitions from the Royal Collection, linking the site not only to monarchy and governance but also to art, culture and national heritage. The clear light and uncluttered foreground emphasise the solidity and grandeur of the building, while the absence of people allows the focus to remain on architecture and symbolism rather than activity.
Beyond its immediate subject, the image lends itself to a wide range of editorial and commercial uses, including travel features on Edinburgh and Scotland, educational material on royal history, cultural heritage publications, and broader storytelling around monarchy, tradition and continuity in the United Kingdom. The calm setting and balanced composition also make it suitable for calendar use and as a background image illustrating British and Scottish identity, historic architecture and the enduring presence of royal institutions within modern society.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM994Y - A wide, documentary street-level view of The Balmoral Hotel on Princes Street in Edinburgh, photographed from the West Register Place area to frame the full fa??ade and the famous clock tower. The building's grand sandstone frontage, ornate roofline and central tower create an unmistakable city landmark, with the clock face clearly visible high above the main elevation. The perspective between surrounding city-centre buildings helps emphasise the Balmoral's scale and its position at one of Edinburgh's most recognisable gateways between the New Town and the Old Town.
The light suggests a cold-season day with clear winter brightness: pale blue sky, crisp edges on the stonework, and cool shadows that bring out carved details across the fa??ade. The overall mood is calm and architectural rather than crowd-focused, making the image highly versatile for editorial use where a clean, identifiable Edinburgh location is needed.
This photograph suits themes including Edinburgh tourism, luxury and heritage hospitality, iconic Scottish architecture, and city-break travel. It also works as a strong general illustration for Princes Street and central Edinburgh, with the clock tower acting as an instantly readable visual cue for the Balmoral and the wider city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM99BB - A straight-on, documentary view of the Flower of Scotland shopfront at 98 Canongate on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, photographed in crisp winter light. The signage across the fascia is clear and readable, with additional wording highlighting Harris Tweed, Cashmere and Scottish Gifts, immediately signalling a tourism-focused retail offer. Large display windows are packed with colourful merchandise, including tartan and knitwear items, racks of souvenirs, and dense point-of-sale displays that create a bright, busy storefront against the darker stonework of the historic Old Town streetscape.
The composition captures the commercial character of the Canongate section of the Royal Mile, where visitors browse for practical cold-weather purchases and Scotland-themed mementos. The pavement and road edge provide a strong horizontal base, while the illuminated interior draws the eye into the shop, suggesting warmth and activity on a cold day. The scene suits editorial uses around Edinburgh tourism, souvenir retail, Royal Mile shopping culture, and the visitor economy, as well as broader themes of heritage streets and modern tourist consumption in historic city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG2F - This image shows the exterior of Milnes of Rose Street, a well-known traditional pub situated on Rose Street in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town, Scotland. The photograph captures the distinctive frontage of the bar, with its ornate gold lettering reading Milnes of Rose Street mounted above large street-facing windows. Warm interior lighting is visible through the glass, creating a welcoming contrast with the darker exterior and reflecting the pub's role as a social space within the busy city centre.
Rose Street runs parallel to Princes Street and has long been associated with Edinburgh's pub culture, serving office workers, shoppers, tourists, and locals alike. Milnes is one of a number of independent and long-established bars on the street, contributing to its reputation as a lively yet traditional drinking destination within the Georgian New Town. The surrounding architecture and streetscape form part of Edinburgh's UNESCO World Heritage Site, adding cultural and historical context to the location.
The image highlights elements of contemporary urban hospitality, including visible bar fittings, hanging lights, and signage, while retaining the character of a classic Scottish city pub. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to Scottish pubs, urban nightlife, tourism, hospitality, independent businesses, and the social life of Edinburgh's city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE0XB4 - Now the flag is set to be returned to the ownership of the community as part of a long-running campaign to allow Leithers to fly their coat of arms once again.
The Court of the Lord Lyon, the heraldic authority for Scotland, has been responsible for the historic crest since 1920.
However, Leith councillor Rob Munn revealed that Leith will once again be allowed to use the coat of arms freely in three months' time.
Councillor Munn, Deputy Lord Provost, said: When Leith amalgamated with Edinburgh, the coat of arms fell out of use and was in the care of the Lord Lyon's office. Previously the Borough Council had it. Over the past decade or so there's been discussions about getting it back.
The crest of the flag features representations of Mary and Jesus in a sailing ship, under the legend Sigillum Oppidi De Leith, which translates as the seal of the town of Leith, and above the phrase Persevere, and is believed to have been brought to the community by 11th-century French traders.
The crest can still be seen on some lampposts, and on several old buildings in Leith.
The Court of the Lord Lyon is understood to have heraldic artists currently designing a slightly different version of the flag for the handover.
Its official title will be The Arms of Leith Neighbourhood Partnership and it will be based on the Arms of the former Leith Borough Council.

In Edinburgh's Royal Mile, just off the High Street, striking south, is a lane known as Covenant Close. This was named from the fact that one of the copies of the National Covenant was teken here from Greyfriars Kirkyard to collect signatures from other residents in the city. The copy was on display in one of the houses in the lane, and signatures were gathered on it.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN31 - Royal Mail's talking postboxes are back for Christmas. Four postboxes have been spruced up in Christmas trim, with elves ready to respond once a letter or card is posted.
The elves say things like Call your mother, Eat more vegetables, If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back at you, The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains, and Send help.
The four postboxes are located in Greenwich, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, and will be in place for the entire festive season.
(According to Royal Mail, the postboxes respond to letters being posted with the sounds of elves hard at work, not fomenting a workers' revolution.)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN37 - Greyfriars Kirkyard is the graveyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located at the southern edge of the Old Town, adjacent to George Heriot's School. Burials have been taking place since the late 16th century, and a number of notable Edinburgh residents are interred at Greyfriars. The Kirkyard is operated by City of Edinburgh Council in liaison with a charitable trust, which is linked to but separate from the church. The Kirkyard and its monuments are protected as a category A listed building.
History
Greyfriars takes its name from the Franciscan friary on the site (the friars of which wear grey habits), which was dissolved in 1560. The churchyard was founded in August 1562 after Royal sanction was granted to replace the churchyard at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. The latter burial ground was not used after around 1600.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PK2 - Edinburgh Castle is an historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. Its importance as a part of Scotland's national heritage was recognised increasingly from the early 19th century onwards, and various restoration programmes have been carried out over the past century and a half. As one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX4B - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2NX - The Grassmarket is a historic market place and an event space in the Old Town of Edinburgh, Scotland. In relation to the rest of the city it lies in a hollow, well below surrounding ground levels.
The Grassmarket is located directly below Edinburgh Castle and forms part of one of the main east-west vehicle arteries through the city centre. It adjoins the Cowgate and Candlemaker Row at the east end, the West Bow (the lower end of Victoria Street) in the north-east corner, King's Stables Road to the north west and the West Port to the west. Leading off from the south-west corner is the Vennel, on the east side of which can still be seen some of the best surviving parts of the Flodden and Telfer town walls.
The Grassmarket tenements with the Castle shrouded in a typical Edinburgh haar
The view to the north, dominated by the castle, has long been a favourite subject of painters and photographers, making it one of the iconic views of the city.
First mentioned in the Registrum Magni Sigilii Regum Scotorum (1363) as the street called Newbygging [new buildings] under the castle, the Grassmarket was, from 1477, one of Edinburgh's main market places, a part of which was given over to the sale of horse and cattle (the name apparently deriving from livestock grazing in pens beyond its western end).
Daniel Defoe, who visited Edinburgh in the 1720s, reports the place being used for two open air markets: the Grass-market and the Horse-market. Of the West Bow at the north-east corner, considerably altered in the Victorian period, he wrote, This street, which is called the Bow, is generally full of wholesale traders, and those very considerable dealers in iron, pitch, tar, oil, hemp, flax, linseed, painters' colours, dyers, drugs and woods, and such like heavy goods, and supplies country shopkeepers, as our wholesale dealers in England do. And here I may say, is a visible face of trade
most of them have also warehouses in Leith, where they lay up the heavier goods

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2P0 - VICTORIA Street with its historic architecture, elegant curve and colourful shop fronts is one of the city's most picturesque locations. In recent times however, it has been forced to ward off the threat of destruction.
Before the creation of Victoria Street and Johnston Terrace in the early 1800s, the steep, awkward incline of the old West Bow was the only feasible passage for those wishing to access the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle from the west.
The old West Bow was a precipitous, narrow Z-shaped street linking the Grassmarket with Castlehill. Its path is somewhat preserved today by the steps which cut through Victoria Street towards the Upper Bow. Prior to the 19th century it was considered to be one of the most important roads in Edinburgh, despite its reputation as one of the most difficult to negotiate if travelling by carriage.
Many of the oldest buildings in the city were contained along the old West Bow. An abundance of timber-fronted houses had sprung up over the centuries, many of them resembling upside-down pyramids due to the manner in which the floors increasingly protruded out as they progressed upwards.
As such, the distance between the top floors of some of the houses on either side of the street was so little that it is said neighbours could enjoy ?the pleasure of tea drinking, without the trouble of leaving their respective abodes'.
The old West Bow was radically transformed between 1829-34 as part of town planner Thomas Hamilton's 1827 Improvement Act which was set up to provide better approaches into the Old Town from the west and south. The eventual design featured a gentle, curved link from the Grassmarket up to the newly-created George IV Bridge. It was originally named Bow Street, remaining so until 1837 when the arrival to the British throne of Queen Victoria was suitably honoured by the city.

The name of the bar is inspired by an Edinburgh legend of a scruffy Skye terrier called Bobby. When his owner died in 1858, Bobby faithfully watched over his grave and was buried alongside his master in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1872.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXHK1 - William Brodie (28 September 1741 ? 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.
Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design, ...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity.
Sign at Deacon Brodie's Tavern on Edinburgh's Royal Mile
Brodie's alter ego
Robert Louis Stevenson, whose father owned furniture made by Brodie, wrote a play (with W. E. Henley) entitled Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life, which was unsuccessful. However, Stevenson remained fascinated by the dichotomy between Brodie's respectable fa??ade, and his real nature and was inspired to write The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886).[1]
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner of the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close off the Royal Mile, which contained his family residence and workshops, still bears the name Brodie's Close. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue.
In 1997 a TV movie of the same name starring Billy Connolly was made in Edinburgh

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJFF - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, was formed in 2006 with the merger of the new Museum of Scotland, with collections relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history, and the adjacent Royal Museum (so renamed in 1995), with collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures.
The two connected buildings stand beside each other on Chambers Street, by the intersection with the George IV Bridge, in central Edinburgh. The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. Admission is free.
The two buildings retain distinctive characters: the Museum of Scotland is housed in a modern building opened in 1998, while the former Royal Museum building was begun in 1861, and partially opened in 1866, with a Victorian Romanesque Revival facade and a grand central hall of cast iron construction that rises the full height of the building. This building reopened on 29 July 2011 after a ?47 million project to restore and extend the building, and redesign the exhibitions (by Ralph Appelbaum).
The National Museum incorporates the collections of the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland, and the Royal Museum. As well as the main national collections of Scottish archaeological finds and medieval objects, the museum contains artifacts from around the world, encompassing geology, archaeology, natural history, science, technology and art. The 16 new galleries reopened in 2011 include 8,000 objects, 80 per cent of which were not formerly on display.
One of the more notable exhibits is the stuffed body of Dolly the sheep, the first successful clone of a mammal from an adult cell. Other highlights include Ancient Egyptian exhibitions, one of Elton John's extravagant suits and a large kinetic sculpture named the Millennium Clock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKFR - The Edinburgh Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue located on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh, Scotland used primarily for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups. After its most recent renovation in 1994, it seats 1,915. It is one of the major venues of the annual summer Edinburgh International Festival and is the Edinburgh venue for the Scottish Opera and the Scottish Ballet.
The present theatre's location is Edinburgh's longest continuous theatre site, for there has been a theatre in that location since 1830. From being Dunedin Hall, the Royal Amphitheatre, Alhambra Music Hall, the Queen's Theatre, Pablo Fanque's Amphitheatre, and Newsome's Circus, the site became the Empire Palace Theatre, the first of the famous Moss Empires' chain, opening on 7 November 1892.
Designed by the great British theatre architect, Frank Matcham, (who built the London Coliseum, among others) its d??cor was lavish, with elephants with Nubian riders, nymphs and cherubs in abundance on the plasterwork, and it seated 3000 people on four levels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKG1 - The Edinburgh Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue located on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh, Scotland used primarily for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED0D8 - The Saltire Society was established in 1936 to encourage everything that might improve the quality of life in Scotland and restore the country to its proper place as a creative force in European civilisation.
It seeks to preserve all that is best in Scottish tradition and to encourage new developments which can strengthen and enrich the country's cultural life. It has wide ranging interests including history, literature, music, drama, architecture and planning ? and promotes excellence in many fields through a series of national awards.
The Society also seeks to revive the memory of famous Scots and to make the nation conscious of its heritage. It seeks to influence decision makers in Scotland through its committees. As well as working at national level the Society has members in Branches throughout Scotland, working to promote the Society's aims within their own communities.
Membership to the Society, is available for an annual fee,[1] to all individuals and organisations who support the aims of the Society.
The name is taken from the flag of Scotland, which has the form of a saltire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1G7 - A popular story in Edinburgh is that of Margaret (or Maggie) Dickson, a fishwife from Musselburgh, whose husband left, possibly press-ganged, to join the Royal Navy. Maggie had gone to work in an inn in the Borders, and was hanged in the Grassmarket in August 1724, at the age of 22 or 23, by hangman John Dalgliesh for murdering her illegitimate baby there by drowning it or placing it in the river Tweed at Kelso, shortly after the birth. After the hanging, a doctor declared Dickson dead, and her family argued with the medical students, who then were only allowed to dissect criminal corpses, so her body was taken back to Musselburgh on a cart. However, on the way there, the story was that her family went for a wake at an inn (possibly Sheep's Heid Inn, Duddingston) when they heard noises from the coffin as she awoke. Under Scots Law, her punishment had been carried out, so she could not be executed for a second time for the same crime (only later were the words until dead added to the sentence of hanging). Her resurrection was also to some extent seen as divine intervention, and so she was allowed to go free. In later life (and legend), she was referred to as hauf-hingit Maggie and attracted curiosity as she was seen back in the Grass-market in October 1724, with an item about a crowd forming to see her in the Scots Magazine. She remarried her husband (as ?death' had parted them) and lived another 40 years.
A poem in Scots appears in a book Quines by actress Gerda Stevenson
Hauf-hingit Maggie
Deith is wappin when it comes ? like birth, I ken ? I hae warstled throu, an focht wi baith. She wis blue, ma bairn, blue as the breast o a brid I seen oan the banks o the Tweed thon day
then grey, aa wrang, the naelstring windit ticht aroon her neck
I ettled tae lowse it, aince, twice, but it aye slippit ? ?ma hauns couldnae grup, ma mind skailt ? frae the jizzen fecht, ma mooth steekit: no tae scraich, no tae scraich, let nane hear?

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED3NW - Canongate Tolbooth is a historic landmark of the Old Town section of Edinburgh, Scotland (U.K.) built in 1591 as a tolbooth, that is, a courthouse, burgh jail and meeting place, for the, then, separate burgh of the Canongate. The building is now occupied by The People's Story Museum and is protected as a category A listed building
In 1875 the City Architect, Robert Morham completely restored and remodeled the exterior giving it back its medieval look (based on Gordon of Rothiemay's map of 1647). This work included remodeling the interior to create museum spaces.

Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival \u2013 with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4524488474 - '12 and 14 Nicolson Square are lovely old buildings in the old town of Edinburgh with distinctive old faded painted sign remnants in red. The square originally contained the properties of Sir James Nicolson, back pre-1800. Older maps reveal this at that time to probably be the extent of the city. Nearby Cabbagehall and Turnip Fields would have once produced food but were built over as the metropolis expanded. Nicholas Martinot looks to have been a prominent manufacturer of baskets and importer of other goods from 1890 or so onwards.
The text on the faded paint advertise 'Fancy Leathergoods' , 'Basket Manufacture', Rugs, Mats, walking Sticks, Hardware and Woodenware.
The Edinburgh Gazette of 1890 and 1892 note two 'bankrupt sequestrations' in which Martinot was elected joint commissioners. In issue 10128 (25th Feb 1890) page 180 they are involved in sequestration of Daniel S Johnston, fancy goods merchant at 103 Kirkgate and 131 Great Junction St Leith. In another issue 10363 the sequestration of a hardware, toy and Smallware merchant from 272 Canongate and 15 St Mary Street is involved ( www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/10128/pages/180 &

The building is now used by Edinburgh University, School of Arts, Culture &

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHRH - The Bank of Scotland plc (Scots: Bank o Scotland, Scottish Gaelic: Banca na h-Alba) is a commercial and clearing bank based in Edinburgh, Scotland. With a history dating to the 17th century, it is the fifth-oldest surviving bank in the United Kingdom (the Bank of England having been established one year earlier), and is the only commercial institution created by the Parliament of Scotland to remain in existence. It was one of the first banks in Europe to print its own banknotes, and it continues to print its own sterling banknotes under legal arrangements that allow Scottish banks to issue currency.
In June 2006, the HBOS Group Reorganisation Act 2006 was passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom, allowing the bank's structure to be simplified. As a result, The Governor and Company of the Bank of Scotland became Bank of Scotland plc on 17 September 2007.
Bank of Scotland has been a subsidiary of Lloyds Banking Group since 19 January 2009, when HBOS was acquired by Lloyds TSB.

Taken here between Christmas and New Year on the night of Hogmanay, the snow and ice of December give it a nice lightness, even at dusk. This is the calm before the storm as the party starts in Princes St and the gardens as the stage fires up to welcome in the new years celebrations. 2009 2010 2011 2012. Everyone needs a street party ticket and a wristband to enter the city arena area, unlike many years ago when it was a bit more easy going. Now there is a midnight torchlight procession from Parliament Square via the historic Lothian Edinburgh Royal Mile to the Son et Lumi\u00e9re and fireworks finale on Calton Hill. On Edinburg new years day the the loony dook is the place to take a swim at South Queensferry in the river Forth in the shadow of the Forth Railway Bridge over to Fife.
Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle here since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603.
As one of the most important fortresses in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle has been involved in many historical conflicts, from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century, up to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions. From the later 17th century, the castle became a military base, with a large garrison. Its importance as a historic monument was recognised from the 19th century, and various restoration programmes have been carried out since.
Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval fortifications were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The notable exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, which dates from the early 12th century. Among other significant buildings of the castle are the Royal Palace, and the early-16th-century Great Hall. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJGE - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 , amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXW31 - A wide-angle view of the courtyard at Old College, part of the University of Edinburgh, photographed on South Bridge in central Edinburgh, EH8 9YL. The image shows the symmetrical stone fa??ades, classical detailing and central dome that characterise one of Scotland's most important historic university buildings.
Old College was designed by architect Robert Adam in the late eighteenth century and later completed by William Henry Playfair, reflecting the architectural ambition and intellectual confidence of the Scottish Enlightenment. The building has long served as a focal point for teaching, administration and academic life at the University of Edinburgh, one of the world's leading research universities.
The enclosed quadrangle and formal layout were intended to express order, learning and civic pride, values closely associated with Edinburgh's reputation as a centre of philosophy, medicine, law and science. Today, Old College continues to house key university functions while also standing as a landmark within Edinburgh's Old Town.
The stone balustrades, paved walkways and traditional lamp standards visible in the image reinforce the sense of continuity between historic scholarship and modern university life. Set against a blue sky with carefully maintained lawns, the scene conveys calm, permanence and institutional authority.
Photographed in daylight with a wide field of view, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including higher education, academic heritage, Scottish Enlightenment history, historic architecture and the role of universities within urban centres. It is well suited to use in educational publications, travel features, architectural studies and cultural commentary relating to Scotland and its universities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJEW - National Museums Scotland was formed by Act of Parliament in 1985 ,amalgamating the former National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland and The Royal Scottish Museum.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKH4 - Greyfriars
Greyfriars Kirkyard is the graveyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The latter burial ground was not used after around 1600
By 1565, all the buildings of the Friary had been removed and their stones carried away for use in the construction of the New Tolbooth and to repair St Giles' and its kirkyard walls. The kirkyard of St Giles' was, by then, overcrowded and Mary, Queen of Scots had, in 1562, given the grounds of the Friary to the town council to use as a burial ground
Greyfriars Bobby (4 May 1855 ? 14 January 1872) was a Skye Terrier or Dandie Dinmont Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died on 14 January 1872. The story continues to be well known in Scotland, through several books and films. A prominent commemorative statue and nearby graves are a tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0NA2 - A winter dusk view from The Vennel, a historic stepped alleyway off Browns Place in Edinburgh's Old Town, photographed at Edinburgh EH1 2HU. The image looks uphill towards Edinburgh Castle, dramatically positioned on its volcanic rock and silhouetted against a dark, moody evening sky. Light snow dusts the stone steps and surrounding rooftops, enhancing the sense of seasonal stillness and historic atmosphere.
The Vennel is one of Edinburgh's most distinctive medieval routes, its narrow stepped form reflecting the city's dense, vertical urban development that evolved within the constraints of defensive walls and steep terrain. Such passages once connected residential areas, workshops and places of worship, forming part of the everyday circulation of life in Scotland's capital for centuries.
The warm glow of traditional street lamps contrasts with the cold tones of the snow and sky, creating a scene often associated with romantic, literary and cinematic depictions of Edinburgh. Views of Edinburgh Castle from the Old Town are among the most iconic in Scotland, symbolising national history, royal power and the city's role as a centre of culture, governance and heritage.
Photographed in low light at dusk, the image captures Edinburgh as both a living city and a preserved historic environment, blending medieval architecture, winter weather and atmospheric lighting. The scene holds strong editorial appeal for themes of Scottish heritage, winter travel, historic European cities, romantic urban landscapes and cultural tourism, offering a timeless portrayal of Edinburgh's enduring character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX3K - Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock.
Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100 year-old history, giving it a claim to having been the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXW9T - A wide view of the Old College buildings at the University of Edinburgh, photographed within the formal courtyard on South College Street in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town. The neoclassical sandstone architecture, arranged around a rectangular lawn, is dominated by the central domed structure and symmetrical wings that frame the space. Stone balustrades, paved walkways and a traditional lamppost add depth and perspective, reinforcing the ordered and ceremonial nature of the historic university setting.
Old College is one of the most recognisable academic buildings in Scotland and has been central to the University of Edinburgh's identity since the eighteenth century. The architecture reflects Enlightenment ideals of reason, balance and civic purpose, qualities closely associated with Edinburgh's historical reputation as a centre of learning and intellectual life. The courtyard layout creates a sense of calm and enclosure, separating scholarly activity from the surrounding streets of the Old Town.
The image captures the continuity between past and present within a working university environment. While the buildings are steeped in history, they remain an active part of modern academic life, housing teaching spaces, offices and cultural venues. The absence of crowds allows the architectural form and materials to take visual precedence, emphasising the scale, craftsmanship and permanence of the institution.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering higher education, university life, historic architecture, Scottish culture and heritage, as well as commercial applications relating to education marketing, cultural tourism, academic publications and representations of European universities within historic urban settings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF7D6R - A winter dusk view of the National Gallery of Scotland, part of the Edinburgh National Galleries, photographed from the Playfair Steps on The Mound in central Edinburgh. The neoclassical gallery building is illuminated against a deep blue evening sky, while snow covers the steps and surrounding pavements, reflecting the warm glow of street lamps and gallery lighting.
Blurred figures moving across the steps suggest pedestrian activity captured using a longer exposure, adding a sense of motion and life to the cold winter scene. Black iron railings frame the foreground, while the elevated position on The Mound provides a strong architectural perspective across this key cultural site linking Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town.
The National Gallery of Scotland houses one of the country's most important art collections and sits at the heart of Edinburgh's cultural and civic landscape. The image conveys themes of winter weather, urban atmosphere, culture, and tourism in Scotland's capital city, making it suitable for editorial use relating to travel, arts coverage, museums, seasonal city life, and European capital destinations, as well as commercial design projects seeking an atmospheric winter city image.
