History
The station was opened by the North Eastern Railway on 1 August 1862. It was designed by the architect Thomas Prosser and was the first building in Harrogate built of brick and had two platforms. Before it opened (and the associated approach lines), the town's rail routes had been somewhat fragmented the York and North Midland Railway branch line from Church Fenton via Tadcaster had a terminus in the town (see below), but the Leeds Northern Railway main line between Leeds and Thirsk bypassed it to the east to avoid costly engineering work to cross the Crimple Valley and the East and West Yorkshire Junction Railway from York terminated at Starbeck. Once the individual companies had become part of the NER, the company concentrated all lines at a new single depot.
The station was largely demolished in 1964/65 and replaced with a more utilitarian one (with fewer platforms) by Taylor Bown and Miller, Architects (Harrogate). A car park now occupies the site of the former bay platforms on the south side. It coincided with the loss of three of the main routes through the town in the Beeching Axe both routes via Wetherby closed to passenger traffic on 6 January 1964 and the Leeds Northern route to Northallerton via Ripon on 6 March 1967.
The York branch was included in Beeching's 1963 report, but it was reprieved in 1966 and remains open.

31 Toad Lane was originally an 18th-century warehouse, on a busy road which then extended to the centre of the town. In 1844 the Co-operative Society rented the ground floor, the upper floors being used by the Methodist society. A counter was made with a plank on barrels, and the shop began. From 1849 the Co-op rented the whole building and developed a library, meeting room, and boot and shoe department. As a result, the Co-operative Union purchased the building at 31 Toad Lane in 1925, expressly to create a museum that enhanced the birthplace of co-operation. The museum opened for the first time in 1931.
In the 1970s, the museum was closed for some years because structural problems were found in the building
but it was successfully restored. Rochdale Council redeveloped the remaining section of Toad Lane outside of the building, which had been a cul-de-sac since the 1960s. The new characteristics of the area were cobbled streets, flanked by 19th-century gas lamps and a unique Victorian post-box.

The building was designed by Sir Arnold Thornely and F.B. Hobbs and was developed in collaboration with Briggs and Wolstenholme. It was constructed between 1904 and 1907, with a reinforced concrete frame that is clad in Portland Stone. The building was the headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) for 87 years, from 1907 to 1994, when the company relocated to new premises at Seaforth Dock. In 2001 it was sold to Downing, a Liverpool-based property developer, and between 2006 and 2009 underwent a major £10m restoration that restored many original features of the building.[2][3]
The Port of Liverpool Building is in the Edwardian Baroque style and is noted for the large dome that sits atop it, acting as the focal point of the building. It is approximately rectangular in shape with canted corners that are topped with stone cupolas. At 220 feet (67 m) the building was the tallest building in Liverpool when built, and as of 2022 is the fourteenth tallest. Like the neighbouring Cunard Building, it is noted for the ornamental detail both on the inside and out, and in particular for the many maritime references and expensive decorative furnishings.

A huge baby swimming underwater in Liverpool city centre. This mural by street artist, Paul Curtis, is potentially the largest street art painting in the centre of Liverpool. Located on the side of The Abbey Road bar on Harrington Street in Liverpool, the mural was painted in May 2021 and took 8 days to complete. It measures 18 metres high and 10 metres wide. The piece was commissioned by Derwent Estates Ltd. The baby is said to represent the re-birth of Liverpool and the new hopes and potential of the future following the Coronavirus lockdowns. Warrington Borough Council's move into its offices in Time Square is bringing significant savings for the local authority, new figures show.
The council relocated from the New Town House site, and other administrative buildings, in late 2020/early 2021, to reduce the excessive running costs of the outdated office accommodation, and provide a better, modern environment for staff and customers.
With council staff now having been at the £23m 1 Time Square' building for the past 18 months which is a much more efficient building than the previous New Town House site - financial analysis shows that the move to the building is saving the council almost three quarters of a million pounds each year.
Previously, the council paid an annual rent and service charge for the New Town House and Quattro buildings, on top of costs such as business rates and maintenance. In addition, the council paid the running costs of its Rylands Street offices and the Customer Contact Centre on Horsemarket Street. The total equivalent cost for this was £3.1m per year.
As part of the move to Time Square, the council purchased New Town House and Quattro, to fix repayment costs and avoid the uncontrollable escalation associated with leasing the buildings, including being exposed to increasing energy costs in an inefficient building.
Under this new operation, the equivalent costs to the council covering the borrowing costs for the building of 1 Time Square and its running costs, along with the continuing annual borrowing costs for purchasing the New Town House and Quattro buildings - are £2.3m. This represents an annual saving for the council of £741,000 a year.

In 2022, its Peel Land and Property estate extends to 13 million square feet (1.2 km2) of buildings, and over 33,000 acres (13,000 ha) of land and water. The Trafford Centre, which opened in 1998, is widely regarded as Peel's landmark development. It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold
Greenall's ales are distributed by Carlsberg and brewed for them by Molson Coors in Burtonwood, near Warrington. Greenall's ales can still be bought in some pubs in the North West of England, although they are gradually disappearing (thank God!). Often, only Greenall's Mild can be found. A visit by King George III secured Cheltenham's reputation as a fashionable place to be seen, and this popularity contributed to its rapid growth during the Regency Period. This short and extensive expansion period has given our Town an abundance of Regency buildings, and has earned us our place as Britain's most complete Regency Town.
As a style, Regency Architecture started popping up in the late 1700's, pioneered by Scottish Architect Robert Adam, and continued even after King George IV's untimely death, well into the 1840's. It is strictly attributed to late Georgian architecture and is typified by a renaissance of neoclassicism, which drew inspiration from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, featuring Ionic Porticos and fluted columns galore. Anyone taking a casual stroll around Cheltenham will easily spot these ancient influences, which adorn many buildings in the Town. Regency Style was also used to describe the decorative arts of the interior design including block printed, or striped wallpaper, as well as the fashion of the time including the famous Empire silhouette. Pop along to the Holst Birthplace Museum to see a perfectly preserved interior from the period.
Much of Cheltenham's iconic architecture was built during the Regency and subsequent Reign of King George IV between 1811 and 1830. Unlike many other periods of architecture, Regency was not about strict building rules, and was instead more a set of 'guidelines' for the design of the buildings.
For example, many modern Cheltenham homes reside in plain, elegant Regency buildings, particularly around Tivoli, The Suffolks and Bath Road. These Regency gems often appear flat roofed (but look closely they aren't) and have a flat vertical façade, string course (a horizontal line in relief between floors) and are finished in stucco with multi-paned sash windows.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXGX - The Port of Whitby is an ancient and historic seaport on the North Yorkshire coast of England. The port lies at the mouth of the River Esk, where it enters into the North Sea. A port has been in existence at Whitby since at least the 7th century, when it was used to bring in supplies for Whitby Abbey. The port is famous for being the port of origin for the sailings of Captain Cook, and some of the ships that he sailed on were also built in the harbour.
Commercial cargo ceased in the late 20th century, however, the port is still an important location for the landing of fish.
Fish were being landed at Whitby during the time that the first abbey had been built in 657
The port was never equal to other ports in the area such as Hull or Middlesbrough. This is due to the hinterland that surrounded the port, with Whitby being largely cut-off from overland travel until the 18th and 19th centuries, it had no great industries to export or import for, being surrounded on all sides of the river by moorland (except for the coast to the north). Trade through the port accelerated with the coming of the railways, but its main function was either as a shelter for ships from storms in the North Sea, or as a re-supply point. Between 1702 and 1704, the number of collier ships alone totalled 98, Bridlington, Hull and Scarborough only hosted 48, 28 and 54 respectively. The safe haven almost guaranteed at Whitby (and at Scarborough and Bridlington too), allowed the port to charge a levy towards the upkeep of the harbour and piers. The levy also applied to passing trade of coal from many north-eastern locations, with the levy not being rescinded until 1861
A survey in the 1950s determined that the port at Whitby was not as successful as other neighbouring cargo ports such as Hull, Teesside and West Hartlepool, on account of its lack of urban sprawl, and the absence of warehouses on the dock side with which to store goods in a safe manner before onward export, or inward transportation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2T8T - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood until September 2006.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
In spite of the APT's troubled history, the design was highly influential and directly inspired other high speed trains such as the Pendolino. The considerable work on electrification that was carried out hand-in-hand with APT was put to good use with newer non-tilting designs like the British Rail Class 91. The APT's tilt system was returned to the WCML on the British Rail Class 390, based on the Fiat Ferroviaria tilting train design and built by Alstom.

The staff member, from Radcliffe, has been temporarily suspended from her duties
Staff member at Strangeways was arrested by anti-corruption police as part of an ongoing investigation into the supply of drugs and prohibited articles into the prison. The 29-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday morning (August 10) by officers from the Regional Prison Anti-Corruption Unit.
The staff member, from Radcliffe, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, conspiracy to convey prohibited articles into prison and possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.
Detective Inspector Kitchen from NWROCU said: We can confirm that following a joint investigation between NWROCU, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service's National Counter Corruption Team and HMP Manchester, a woman was arrested and temporarily suspended from duties

The programme discovered evidence of mistreatment of small animals, dead fish being left to rot and be eaten in tanks, and sick small animals up for sale. That month, Pets at Home issued a full response to the claims made in the broadcast. The BBC trust published a clarification on 7 June 2016 that the website included a version of the item made before Pets at Home's points in reply to criticisms were incorporated. In response to the complaint the programme-makers acknowledged that this represented a serious breach of the BBC's editorial standards and replaced the item with a version which reflected Pets at Home's points.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ43F - Joseph Crosfield (5 October 1792 16 February 1844) was a businessman who established a soap and chemical manufacturing business in Warrington, which was in the historic county of Lancashire and is now in the ceremonial county of Cheshire. This business was to become the firm of Joseph Crosfield and Sons.
Early life
Joseph Crosfield was born in Warrington, the fourth son of George Crosfield and his wife Ann née Key. The Crosfield family had been Quakers since the time of George Fox and this tradition was maintained by George and subsequently by Joseph. George Crosfield was a wholesale grocer in Warrington who also had interests in a sugar-refining business in Liverpool. The family moved to Lancaster in 1799 for George to develop a sugar-refining business there, while still keeping an interest in his grocery business in Warrington under the care of his assistant, Joseph Fell. Nothing is known of Joseph's early life in Lancaster. From September 1807, a time close to his 15th birthday, he was apprenticed for 6 years to Anthony Clapham, a druggist and chemist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. By 1811 Anthony Clapham was also a soap manufacturer.
In 1814, Joseph's apprenticeship having finished, at the age of 21 he decided to establish his own soap making business in Warrington. At this time soap manufacturing was growing rapidly in the Mersey bad recently developed canals and river navigations in the area which allowed for easier transport of the raw materials into the factories and for the distribution of the finished products. A number of new large soaperies had recently been established in the nearby towns of St Helens, Runcorn and Liverpool.
Joseph Crosfield's soapery was established on the north bank of a loop of the river Mersey in an area known as Bank Quay, near to urban Warrington but at that time separated from it by a stretch of fields. During this time established lubricant firms were purchased and subsequently brought their business under the Rock Oil banner, these being A.E. Bennetts of Liverpool and Nickerson Lubricants of Halifax, both long standing independent lubricant blenders with their own specialised areas of business. These acquisitions and the new plant meant that Rock Oil was ready for the next phase in its history. Ted maintained a major involvement in the business until sadly he passed away in 2005.
In 2014 Charles stepped down as Managing Director after 25 years in the position and took up a new role as Chairman. Greg Hewitt became Managing Director and took over the reins with the company being the strongest it's ever been. Charles has been instrumental in driving the company to where it is today and led the company to a record turnover with sales in over 70 countries worldwide.
In 2017 saw the opening of a brand new Research & Development centre. This 10,000 square foot building houses one of the finest independent laboratories in the country and staff across technical, sales, marketing and senior management. With over a million pounds worth of technical equipment, the facility is at the cutting edge of the lubricants industry. This is the single biggest investment the business had ever made to ensure the Rock brand was able to match the ambition of its staff and support customers all over the globe.
Rock Oil is one of the few remaining blenders of lubricants still manufacturing in the UK and has worked with multiple British and World champions across various motorsport disciplines. Rock Oil is currently the official lubricant partner of the British Superbike Series which is the biggest domestic motorcycle race series in the world.

the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines

The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

Dawson's was founded in 1898 by piano tuner John Dawson and has had a major presence from its Sankey Street HQ, since 1914.

History
Terminus: 18621873
The station opened on 31 March 1862 when the West Somerset Railway (WSR) opened from Norton Junction (later Norton Fitzwarren), serving as the WSR's original line terminus. Watchet was chosen as the WSR line's terminus, as it had been since the Middle Ages an important regional port on the Bristol Channel. Local iron ore, timber and paper products were exported, whilst from the same time, it had become an important national port for the import of French wine and salt. The commercial aim of the WSR in choosing Watchet as its terminus was hence to provide a wider and cheaper distribution route for goods from the port.
The GWR increased the capacity of the line in the 1930s. Because of the position of the goods shed opposite the platform, it was not possible to add a second track and platform, and a passing loop was constructed at Kentford just 0.75 miles (1.21 km) west of the station. It opened on 10 July 1933 but the signal box was only used during the daytime each summer.
Nationalisation in 1948 saw the GWR become the Western Region of British Railways. On 24 August 1952, the signal box at Washford closed, and the one at Kentford remained open until 7 May 1964 when it also closed. Freight traffic was withdrawn on 6 July 1964 and passenger trains on 4 January 1971.
Preservation
The station was reopened by the new West Somerset Railway on 28 August 1976

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGYD - William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)

In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.

Chain buckling under coronavirus shutdown just a year after it was rescued & considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators.
Debenhams is preparing to call in administrators after the struggling department store was forced to close all its outlets under the coronavirus lockdown.
The company, which has 22,000 staff and was rescued by its lenders after collapsing into administration only a year ago, is understood to be considering filing a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators next week. The legal process provides protection from creditors for 10 working days while a company tries to secure a rescue deal.
Potential administrators lined up this time include KPMG, which handled the Debenhams restructure last May.
A Debenhams spokesman said: Like all retailers, we are making contingency plans reflecting the extraordinary current circumstances. Our owners and lenders remain highly supportive and whatever actions we may take will be with a view to protecting the business during the current situation.
They added: While our stores remain closed in line with government guidance, and the majority of our store-facing colleagues have been furloughed, our website continues to trade and we are accepting customer orders, gift cards and returns.
It is understood that the potential insolvency measure would be intended to protect the business so it could continue to trade.
Debenhams was taken over last year by a group of its financial backers, including the US hedge funds Silver Point and GoldenTree, after falling into administration. It then used an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) to cull unprofitable sites and cut rents.
The group has closed 22 stores, 19 of which shut in January, resulting in more than 700 job losses. A further 28 of its remaining 141 stores had been lined up for permanent closure next year.

It was founded by James Proctor and George Robins in Dukinfield, Cheshire in 1858. It consists of a bus station on Stamford Road, a Northern Rail-operated heavy rail station on the Mid-Cheshire Line, and a light rail stop which forms the terminus of Metrolink's Altrincham Line.
The original heavy rail element of the station was opened by the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway as Altrincham and Bowdon railway station in April 1881, changing to Altrincham railway station in May 1974. The Metrolink element opened in June 1992. The Interchange underwent a complete redevelopment, at a cost of £19 million, starting in mid-July 2013. The new bus station opened officially on 7 December 2014.
Altrincham Interchange has four platforms. Two bay platforms are used for Metrolink services. Two further through platforms accommodate train services on the line between Manchester Piccadilly and Chester via Stockport. A bus station on the edge of the complex provides road-based interchange, and there is also a taxi rank.

The demolition of horrid 1970s buildings that mask Queen Street station in Glasgow has begun as part of its £120 million redevelopment. A hotel extension and office block will be removed to make way for expansion of the station to accommodate longer electric trains. The complex, which handles some 20 million passengers a year, will stay open during the transformation, which is due to be completed in 2020. The overhaul will include a new glass frontage onto George Square - a view blocked since the 1970s by an extension of the Millennium Hotel. The addition, built on pillars, will be demolished, along with the adjacent Consort House office block, built around 1975, which housed Strathclyde Partnership for Transport until 2016. Excavators have been lifted by crane onto the 30m-high (100ft) roof of Consort House to break up its reinforced concrete and steel frame, floor-by-floor. Consort House is being demolished as part of the expansion of Queen Street Station.

A hotel extension and office block will be removed to make way for expansion of the station to accommodate longer electric trains. The complex, which handles some 20 million passengers a year, will stay open during the transformation, which is due to be completed in 2020. The overhaul will include a new glass frontage onto George Square - a view blocked since the 1970s by an extension of the Millennium Hotel. The addition, built on pillars, will be demolished, along with the adjacent Consort House office block, built around 1975, which housed Strathclyde Partnership for Transport until 2016. Excavators have been lifted by crane onto the 30m-high (100ft) roof of Consort House to break up its reinforced concrete and steel frame, floor-by-floor. This huge building had taken three years to build and also had connected printworks on Market Street (now the City Art Centre). The printworks connected below road level direct to Waverley Station in a highly efficient production line.

The development provides 42,000 square metres of highly energy-efficient office space in two blocks, broadly triangular in plan, which are linked by one of the largest glazed atriums in Europe. This semi-public space allows pedestrians to use it as a sheltered thoroughfare.
The building replaces a sixteen-storey 1960s office development which obstructed important view corridors between Greenwich and St Pauls Cathedral and between the Monument and the Tower of London. The new buildings restore these views and open up this historically important site, creating a new public plaza with trees and water features.
The engineering of the atriums glass walls in excess of twenty metres in height is technically highly advanced: they are hung like curtains from tension cables stretched between the two buildings. They terminate one storey above ground level, creating an open space through which the public can move freely.
In order to prevent the faades from swaying under wind loads, they are tied back to the columns that support the glass roof with glass needles bora-silicate glass pipes, more commonly used to transport corrosive chemicals. Each needle consists of two layers of glass an inner structural tube and an outer protective layer. A PVB interlayer holds the two together. The tubes have been pre-compressed in order to overcome the inherent weakness of glass when under tension. Each tube takes the wind load of almost 50m2 of facade. The tubes have been tested to three times their design load. They have never been used in an architectural application before.
The building is highly energy efficient, incorporating blade-like aluminium louvres for solar shading, displacement ventilation and high insulation levels. The lobbies incorporate two large wall paintings by the renowned American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt.

Straddling Edinburgh's Old and New Towns, the site posed grave challenges for the builders. Firstly, there was a steep drop of 16 metres from front to back. A more serious issue was instability: the 'earthen Mound' (as it was known) was a man-made hill, created from the earth excavated for the New Town. The site had also been a rubbish dump in the past, and contained vast quantities of household waste!
Consequently, there was a serious risk of slippage. To overcome this, a substantial retaining wall was constructed on the north side of the building.
By the 1850s, the building was proving unsatisfactory. It was now too small for the Bank's growing business. There had also been complaints that it looked stark and ugly when viewed from Princes Street. Indeed, the famous judge Lord Cockburn described it as a 'prominent deformity'. Seeking to resolve these issues, several architects were invited to submit plans for extending and improving the building.
The directors eventually selected David Bryce. His solution was to add full-height wings to the east and west, tied back to the original building.

In 1861 his grandson John Aynsley built the historic Portland Works on Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire.The company's profitability made it a desirable acquisition. In June 1970 Spode put in a bid, this was then topped in July by Denbyware. Discussions then followed with Waterford Glass and a £1 million bid was agreed. In 1970 John Aynsley and Sons was taken over by Waterford and renamed Aynsley China Ltd. In 1987 Waterford sold the company in order to focus the group's fine china sales on the worldwide Wedgwood brand.
In May 1997, Aynsley China was acquired by The Belleek Pottery Group in Ireland. The company closed its Stoke-on-Trent factory in September 2014. As of July 2015 the factory shop is still open but its future is uncertain as the site is being advertised as for sale.

There was no such ceremony when buying my first one, a green Vauxhall Viva 3 door hatchback from a family friend. Only \u00a3230 but it cost me in excess of that in filler to keep the wings safely stuck together.
Luckily I left the Citroen garage in Warrington in a relative state of relaxed karma after Steve Johnson here had relieved me of a \u00a3500 deposit. He was less relaxed as one of his business vans had just gone walkabout the previous day, on an east bound journey to Irlam on the A57. Its a 'pleasure - pain' thing I like to think!
How do celebs buy a car? Perhaps they have helpers and servants who just sort it. If you were Madonna you may well follow the Kabbalah example. If you are needing or thinking you want to change your car I have provided a simple extract from the good book. The magicians Kabbalah (rather than the Haynes manual):
'For example, an Oath taken as part of a car-buying ritual might begin 'The point of this work is to buy a car (Kether). I wish to buy a car with all the energy I have (Chockmah). Allied London executive Mike Ingall was convinced of the site's regeneration potential and Manchester City Council was keen to redevelop the city centre after the 1996 Manchester bombing.
The development, named from a narrow street which ran westwards from Deansgate, is bounded by Bridge Street to the north, Quay Street to the south, Deansgate to the east, and the River Irwell to the west. The Financial Times said in 2012 that the development spread over 22 acres (89,000 m2) and contained 3,000,000 sq ft (280,000 m2) of office space.By 2008, many had been completed and others were under construction or in the planning stages. The structural, civil and geo-environmental engineers were Capita Symonds Structures based in Cheadle Hulme.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4503896012 - 'Chris is the operations manager (M.Inst.ICCM to give him his proper title) at Northwich Town Council for cemetaries. He looks after the allocation of burial and cremation plots at Northwich and Rudheath in Cheshire. He is a great chap and I was inspired to have a little window into his job.
It is his job to catalog each interment and here he is looking at a ledger of burials from 1893 onwards. Documentation becomes sparse much before this. All of the records in Northwich are in fact paper records in ledgers like this, they have not yet been computerised or fully digitised. Often a usual day at his office is taken up at least in part by family tree enquiries and manual searches of the books of carefully hand written entries. The books are now getting quite worn and tired, some flaking and coming apart unfortunately.
I had quite a long interesting chat with Chris, who as you might expect had quite an enlightened view of death and burial. The British and indeed largly northern European view of it tend to keep it hidden. However it is the only one of two things we will all encounter in life, the second being tax.
Human burial practices are generally bourne from the human desire to demonstrate 'respect for the dead'. Also to prevent the possibilities of revenants harming the living.
Here are the main reasons for this-
Respect for the physical remains. If left lying on top of the ground, scavengers may eat the corpse, considered disrespectful to the deceased in many (but not all) cultures. In Tibet, Sky burials return the remains to the cycle of life and acknowledge the body as 'food,' a core tenet of some Buddhist practices. Parsi's in India expose the body to the air, birds, insects etc to be picked clean. This last one is not so far away from what ancient britons did when bones were picked clean then stored in communal chambers, as have been found in the Scotish hebrides and particularly on Mull.
Burial can be seen as an attempt to bring closure to the deceased's family and friends. Psychologists in some Western Judeo-Christian quarters, as well as the US funeral industry, claim that by interring a body away from plain view, the pain of losing a loved one can be lessened.
Many cultures believe in an afterlife. Burial is sometimes believed to be a necessary step for an individual to reach the afterlife.
Many religions prescribe a particular way to live, which includes customs relating to disposal of the dead.
He is seeing a rise in green / natural funerals. Bodies buried five to ten feet down in a wicker or biodegradable container, sometimes not even in a traditional cemetary setting. Cremation is becoming ever more popular too. Suffice to say, Chris and the job he does should be safe for sometime to come.

The first issue made was of the ½d (as shown here) and 1d values, which were in the same colours as used in the previous reign. Although the main design feature remained the same a central ellipse for the portrait, an ornamental frame, value tablet at the base and a crown at the top a three quarter portrait was used for the first time. Subsequent designs reverted to the standard profile however.
The UK's first commemorative stamps were issued for the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. The pair of large-format stamps featured a lion in an imposing stance
they were issued twice, in 1924 and then in 1925, the stamps of each year being inscribed with the year of issue.[4] A second set of commemoratives in 1929 marked the 9th Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), held in London that year.
