Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF1HN - Weathered industrial door and pulley at Verdant Works former jute mill in Dundee, Scotland, UK. The close architectural detail shows a faded blue-grey timber door marked with a large painted number 6, beneath a simple overhead pulley and metal track fixed to rough historic stone and brickwork. Verdant Works is a restored nineteenth-century mill complex which opened as Scotland's jute museum in 1996 and preserves the buildings, machinery and social history associated with the industry that once dominated Dundee. The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of industrial heritage, jute mills, old factory doors, historic architecture, weathered textures, pulleys, workshops, manufacturing buildings, Dundee history, Scottish industry, urban archaeology, adaptive reuse and museum conservation. Peeling paint, rust, exposed masonry and the surviving mechanical fitting retain the authentic working character of the former industrial site. The image works particularly well as an abstract or detail view of industrial history, showing how ordinary functional features such as doors, tracks and lifting equipment can survive as evidence of the practical operation of a Victorian factory.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NXEM3B - Sixty-nine or 69, also known by its French name soixante-neuf (69), is a group of sex positions in which two people align themselves so that each person's mouth is near the other's genitals, each simultaneously performing oral sex on the other. The participants are thus mutually inverted like the numerals 6 and 9 in the number 69 (69), hence the name. This position can involve any combination of sexes.
Method
Variations of the 69 positions include mutual anilingus or double rimming, and digital penetration of either partner's anus or vagina.
In these positions, the partners are said to experience sexual stimulation simultaneously, but this can also distract those who try to focus solely on pleasuring themselves. The position can also be awkward for partners who are not similar in height.
The term sixty-nine or soixante-neuf for mutual simultaneous oral-genital stimulation is an English translation of the euphemistic French term, soixante-neuf. The term soixante-neuf has not been traced any earlier than the Whore's Catechisms published in the 1790s in France, usually attributed to the early leader of the French Revolution, Mlle. Théroigne de Méricourt.
The Kama Sutra mentions this sex position, albeit by a different name: When a man and woman lie down in an inverted order, i.e. with the head of the one towards the feet of the other and carry on [mouth] congress, it is called the 'congress of a crow'.
Internet meme
In reference to the sex position, 69 has become an internet meme, where users will respond to any occurrence of the number with the word nice and draw specific attention to it. This means to sarcastically imply that the reference to the sex position was intentional. Because of its association with the sex position and resulting meme, 69 has become known as the sex number in these communities

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M90511 - An IOU (abbreviated from the phrase I owe you) is usually an informal document acknowledging debt. An IOU differs from a promissory note in that an IOU is not a negotiable instrument and does not specify repayment terms such as the time of repayment. IOUs usually specify the debtor, the amount owed, and sometimes the creditor. IOUs may be signed or carry distinguishing marks or designs to ensure authenticity. In some cases, IOUs may be redeemable for a specific product or service rather than a quantity of currency, constituting a form of scrip

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K2PN01 - . A grounded documentary photograph made at National Waterways Museum, South Pier Road, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, UK, CH65 4FW in 2022, combining the immediate subject with evidence of the surrounding streetscape, public realm, business activity or local character. The scene records Bacup, waterways and canal, cargo vessel, Rec No 1728 Liverpool. The subject also carries associations with inland navigation, heritage boating, everyday life, inland transport history, working waterway, local bus network, historical comparison, local character, towpath landscape, waterborne freight, community identity, changing streetscape, passenger transport, and navigation engineering. Today's relevance is strengthened by funding, public access and the continuing question of the value of canals as both historic infrastructure and blue-green corridors. From a 2025-onward perspective, reliability and passenger information are closely linked to this subject, alongside the challenge of maintaining reliable services outside dense urban centres. Future viewers can use this scene from National Waterways Museum, South Pier Road, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, UK, CH65 4FW to compare period objects and surrounding context with whatever follows after new ownership. The subject also sits alongside industrial navigation, contemporary social history, bus route infrastructure, waterway conservation, surface public transport, documentary photography, local history, and local mobility. The recorded references to Liverpool, Bacup, canal, vessel, and waterways preserve clues about how the subject was presented, used or understood at the time. A later view of National Waterways Museum, South Pier Road, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, UK, CH65 4FW may show a very different setting, increasing the value of this precise record of its earlier appearance and activity. That local specificity strengthens the long-term documentary value of image 2K2PN01.

The image documents EMI 2566, Demo Record Not For sale, Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, 1975, produced by Roy Thomas Baker. A broader reading of the photograph includes contemporary social history, local history, creative industries, before-and-after reference, music history, archival record, place identity, cultural venue, arts destination, public realm, social history, changing streetscape, historical comparison, and period detail. In present-day coverage, the subject reaches into venue costs and heritage, not least because of the financial pressure faced by many galleries and performance venues. On the 11.2.2016, a delegation representing the BMA (UK) visited the site of 28 Dean Street, situated in the Soho area of West London “ which is a five minute walk from Gerrard Street (in the heart of London's Chinatown), and a one minute walk from Soho Square Gardens. Karl Marx and his family lived in two houses on Dean Street “ firstly number 64 and then number 28. The room the Marx family occupied at 64 Dean Street is generally described as small “ being no bigger than a closet or store cupboard. By the time Marx moved into 28 Dean Street “ his family comprised of himself, his wife Jenny (who was pregnant), his housekeeper Lenchen, and their three children (Jennychen, Laura and Edgar). Their youngest son “ Henry ˜Guido' Marx “ died in November 1850 whilst the family were still living at 64 Dean Street. The Marx family rented only a small area of 28 Dean Street consisting initially of just two rooms (Marx would later rent a third room for use as his study). In his Karl Marx “ A Biography (1995) the historian David McLellan describes the two rooms as being situated on the second floor of the building and comprising of a back small bedroom and a larger front room (measuring 15ft by 18ft) that had three windows looking out onto the street. He further states that the Marx family lived in this house from 1851 to 1856 (Page 240), but on photograph number 8 in his book (situated between pages 178 and 179) he states that the date of occupation was in fact between 1850 and 1856. Indeed, the plaque raised by the now defunct Greater London Council (GLC) is affixed between two windows on the second floor of the building and quotes the dates of occupation as ˜1851-1856' “ a date that McLellan states is ˜not quite accurate' on his description of the photograph of 28 Dean Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16AT3 - A racing-style road bicycle chained among other bikes on a London street carries a large homemade advertising board promoting a Man & Van service, displaying a mobile telephone number and an advertised rate of £40 per hour. The improvised sign turns the parked cycle into a simple, low-cost form of street marketing for an independent removals, delivery and light-haulage business. Man-and-van operators are a familiar part of London and the wider British urban economy, offering flexible transport for small house moves, flat moves, student removals, furniture collection, bulky-item delivery, office moves, marketplace purchases, storage runs, clearances and other jobs that may not require a conventional removals company. The image documents the practical, informal advertising methods often used by sole traders and microbusinesses, where visibility, a mobile phone number and a straightforward hourly price can matter more than expensive branding or a permanent shopfront. The road bike has drop handlebars and the appearance of an older racing or commuter bicycle, while the cluster of chained cycles and painted road markings reinforce the busy city setting. The contrast between pedal-powered transport and an advertisement for a van-based service gives the scene additional visual irony. Such businesses operate alongside established removal firms, courier companies, van-hire operators and app-based delivery platforms, appealing to customers seeking local, short-notice or relatively inexpensive transport. The £40 p/h wording gives the photograph documentary value as a record of advertised service pricing and everyday trading conditions at the time it was taken. The scene has wider relevance to self-employment, entrepreneurship, London small business, urban logistics, home moving, local commerce, independent transport services, informal marketing and the continuing use of physical street advertising alongside online search, social media and digital marketplaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ546 - . Recorded at Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 in 2022, the image fixes a recognisable subject and its environment at one point in time, giving later viewers a reliable basis for comparison. The main point of reference is Two working Tarmac Dry Silo Mortar hoppers, on a building site in Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK. A broader reading of the photograph includes heavy-industry heritage, manufacturing heritage, regional identity, construction project, visual archive, local character, community identity, archival record, historical comparison, social history, industrial material culture, engineering history, site transformation, and site redevelopment. Current relevance extends to housing demand and materials, particularly through how new development responds to changing demographic demand. In present-day coverage, the subject reaches into adaptive reuse and labour history, not least because of how surviving industrial objects become evidence of vanished working practices. The archival value lies partly in recording street furniture and boundaries around Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 before changed technology alters the character of the place. Other useful contextual ideas include development pipeline, place identity, construction phase, residential development, industrial artefact, documentary photography, building programme, and industrial archaeology. Elements such as hoppers, working, building, Mortar, and Tarmac add documentary specificity and may become increasingly useful when compared with later records. For Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4, the photograph contributes to a cumulative visual history in which changes in use, signs, access and appearance can be traced over time. The image also provides a reference for housing demand and how new development responds to changing demographic demand within the real-world context of Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC75TW - . Made at Moscow, Russia in 2022, this photograph records a real place and moment, preserving details that may later be altered by redevelopment, rebranding, changing ownership or different public use. The location is represented through Raketa perpetual calendar watch, from the old CCCP / USSR, Russia - a product of the Moscow watch factory number one, on a Russian map. The setting additionally reflects historic frontage, labour history, public realm, traditional structure, production infrastructure, historic freight equipment, engineering history, manufacturing heritage, heritage landmark, industrial artefact, archival record, historical comparison, documentary photography, and changing streetscape. Today's relevance is strengthened by manufacturing decline, brownfield redevelopment and the continuing question of the growing value of industrial heritage for tourism and local identity. From a 2025-onward perspective, redevelopment pressure and embodied carbon are closely linked to this subject, alongside the tension between conservation and redevelopment. For later comparison, the photograph preserves commercial use and occupation at Moscow, Russia, details that may look very different after different community use. The subject also sits alongside period streetscape, industrial material culture, architectural character, regional identity, place identity, conservation architecture, period detail, and local landmark. References to factory, Moscow, Russian, product, and Russia give the picture a strong period identity and tie it closely to its named subject. The period setting at Moscow, Russia helps place the main subject within real social and physical surroundings rather than isolating it as an abstract object. A further contemporary connection is manufacturing decline and the growing value of industrial heritage for tourism and local identity without losing the local specificity of Moscow, Russia.

Ninety is the sum of its unitary divisors (excluding itself), it is a unitary perfect number, and because it is equal to the sum of a subset of its divisors, it is a semiperfect number. 90 is a pronic number. But it is also a nontotient. It is a Perrin number, preceded in the sequence by 39, 51, 68.
In normal space, the interior angles of a square measure 90 degrees each. Also, in a right triangle, the angle opposing the hypotenuse measures 90 degrees, with the other two angles adding up to 90 for a total of 180 degrees. Thus, an angle measuring 90 degrees is called a right angle. 90 is divisible by the sum of its base 10 digits, thus it is a Harshad number.
Ninety is the atomic number of thorium, an actinide. As an atomic weight, 90 identifies an isotope of strontium, a by-product of nuclear reactions including fallout. It contaminates milk.
The latitude of the North Pole and the South Pole are 90 degrees, its also the code for international direct dial phone calls to Turkey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3RN6 - . Interior of Stalybridge Station Buffet Bar - Showing old station signs Mossley & Aldam Jc. Photographed at Rassbottom Street, STALYBRIDGE, Greater Manchester, England, SK15 1RF. The photograph was taken on 18 July 2015. This editorial stock image documents the subject as it appeared at that time, preserving a clear record of the place, its appearance and the everyday details surrounding it. The interior viewpoint records fittings, surfaces, decoration and spatial details that help show how the premises or public space was arranged when photographed. The wider composition gives a broader sense of the surroundings, showing the principal subject in relation to more of the streetscape, landscape or public space. Signage, lettering, logos, numbers or other visible information form an important part of the record, helping identify the subject and capture contemporary branding or public messaging. The scene is closely associated with Interior, Stalybridge, Station, Buffet, Bar, Junction, Stalyvegas, rail, railway and inside, adding specific subject detail and useful search context without losing the documentary focus on the main subject. The scene has strong relevance to railway travel, public transport, passenger infrastructure and the everyday operation of Britain's rail network. It can illustrate editorial stories about stations, train journeys, commuting, regional connectivity, rail investment, rolling stock, freight, signals, platforms, accessibility and the relationship between railways and the places they serve. Visible railway furniture, signs, tracks, platforms, trains, signals or station buildings help place the photograph firmly in the practical environment experienced by passengers and railway staff. As a dated documentary image it also offers a useful record of transport infrastructure, branding and passenger facilities at the time the photograph was made. The view is firmly rooted in a real location rather than a constructed studio setting.

Cricket in Australia holds 87 as a superstitiously unlucky score and is referred to as 'the devil's number.' 87 is 13 runs short of a century, but there is a more interesting story. The origin of the superstition stretches back 85 years to December 1929, when a 10-year-old Keith Miller was watching Australia’s greatest cricketer in a Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.
Don Bradman was putting on a batting master class for NSW against hosts Victoria, when out of nowhere the Don was bowled neck and crop by Harry ‘Bull’ Alexander on 87. Miller was stunned. How could this happen to his hero? The number became a fixation for Miller, who would rifle through newspapers for club cricket scorecards in search for the unlucky figure.
The shock of Bradman’s untimely demise stayed with Miller. The legend spread when Miller was playing district cricket for South Melbourne alongside future Test captain Ian Johnson. Johnson was dismissed on 87, providing Miller the opportunity to recount the famous incident and offer his unholy theory.
The myth began circling the cricket community and became folklore after World War II when Richie Benaud and Alan Davidson heard of it.
However, as the hype around the superstition reached its highest point, Miller decided to review the scorebook of the match only to find a shocking revelation.
Bradman was actually bowled for 89. Miller blamed the slow MCG scorecard for the error, but the damage had been done, 87 would remain forever as the Devil’s number.

Established at the outset of the punk rock boom, Stiff Records signed various punk and New Wave acts such as Nick Lowe, The Damned, Lene Lovich, Wreckless Eric, Plummet Airlines, Elvis Costello, and Ian Dury. The label's marketing and advertising was often provocative and witty billing itself as 'The World's Most Flexible Record Label'. Other slogans were 'We came. We saw. We left', 'If It Ain't Stiff, It Ain't Worth a F**k', and 'When You Kill Time, You Murder Success' (printed on promotional wall clocks).

Heinz 57, a brand of sauce, and the number of varieties of foods claimed to be produced by the H.J. Heinz Company. Pictured here is the sign from the UK's largest baked bean factory near Wigan, Lancs.
Henry J. Heinz introduced the marketing slogan '57 Varieties' in 1896. He later claimed he was inspired by an advertisement he saw while riding an elevated train in New York City (a shoe store boasting '21 styles'). The reason for '57' is unclear. Heinz said he chose '5' because it was his lucky number and the number '7' was his wife's lucky number. However Heinz also said the number '7' was selected specifically because of the 'psychological influence of that figure and of its enduring significance to people of all ages'. Whatever the reasons, Heinz wanted the company to advertise the greatest number of choices of canned and bottled foods for sale. In fact by 1892, four years before the slogan was created, the Heinz company was already selling more than 60 products.
Animals, especially dogs which are a mixture of multiple breeds, can be referred to as 'Heinz 57'. In bingo in the United Kingdom, a commonly used call for '57' is 'Heinz variety'.

Studio 54 was a popular New York nightclub from 1977 until 1981 when it was sold by founders and creators Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager. It was called the most famous nightclub of all time and was a sophisticated, groundbreaking multi-media visual extravaganza. It continued to operate as a nightclub until 1991 by other owners.
Located at 254 West 54th Street in Manhattan, New York City, the space was originally the Gallo Opera House, opening in 1927, after which it changed names several times, eventually becoming CBS radio and television Studio 52. Since November 1998 it has been a venue for the Roundabout Theatre Company and is still called Studio 54, but is no longer a nightclub. A separate restaurant and nightclub, called 54 Below, operates in the basement of the famed venue

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6PET - . BrooklynMixer SeventyEight, 78, a doorway in Seel Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, UK, L1 4BH. Photographed on 23 July 2013. Historically, town and city centres are continually rewritten by new buildings, transport schemes and changing commercial uses
Photographs preserve the everyday fabric between major landmarks, including underpasses, arcades, back streets and small businesses that may disappear during redevelopment. Historically, historic and contemporary architecture can be read as a record of investment, planning and changing urban functions
Civic, commercial, industrial and residential buildings each contribute to the character of a townscape, particularly where older structures are adapted rather than demolished. In 2026, current regeneration programmes make older urban photographs particularly useful
They allow comparison of high streets, underpasses, shopping areas and public spaces before redevelopment, while also documenting local identity that may not survive physical change. In 2026, the reuse of existing buildings is increasingly discussed alongside conservation, embodied carbon and town-centre regeneration
Images of older façades and converted premises can therefore illustrate both architectural heritage and the practical pressures of adapting buildings for new uses. The historical context is that city-centre photography documents both designed space and informal use
Architecture, signage, traffic, public art and pedestrian movement together reveal how people experience a place, often providing a more useful record of urban change than landmark images alone. In the longer view, urban street scenes capture the cumulative effect of planning, architecture, transport, retail and public space
Shopfronts, signs, street furniture and pedestrians can date an image precisely and show how a district changes between periods of investment, decline and regeneration.

Amidst the giddy chaos of Berlin, Hitler toys with death in his bunker. The golden boy of Nazism, Hermann Göring, looks set to succeed as Führer. But his bid for power ends with a cyanide capsule in a gaol cell in Nuremberg. And there story.htm Target=_Blank>history signs off on Hermann. Yet buried in the footnotes sits the extraordinary story of Hermann Göring's little brother, Albert.
A defiant anti-Nazi, Albert Göring spent the war years busting the persecuted out of concentration camps, smuggling them across borders and funnelling aid to refugees throughout Europe. He did everything to undermine his brother's regime. But by 1944 the Gestapo were hunting him down like a dog. Did Hermann step in and save his brother?
Enter William, a twentysomething from Sydney, Australia, who stumbles upon the tattered pieces of Albert's history. Shelving plans for a Ph.D., William sets off on a three year odyssey across eight countries and three continents to piece together the puzzling life of Albert Göring.
Forget staid biography. Think seat of your pants travelogue mixed with a Spielberg eye for storytelling and you start to get a taste for the energy William brings to the page. Delivering the kind of must-read story that turns history on its head, Thirty Four gives us a new hero. Standing alongside Oskar Schindler and Raoul Wallenberg is the Göring history forgot.

33 and a third was the speed of an vinyl microgroove LP vinyl record. I have a loft full of those.
At the time the LP was introduced, nearly all phonograph records for home use were made of an abrasive (and therefore noisy) shellac compound, employed a much larger groove, and played at approximately 78 rpm, limiting the playing time of a 12-inch record to less than five minutes per side. The new product was a 12 or 10-inch fine-grooved disc made of vinyl and played with a smaller-tipped 'microgroove' stylus at a speed of 33⅓ rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for more than 20 minutes.
Only the microgroove standard was truly new, as both vinyl and the 33⅓ rpm speed had been used for special purposes for many years, as well as in one unsuccessful earlier attempt to introduce a long-playing record for home use.
Although the LP was especially suited to classical music because of its extended continuous playing time, it also allowed a collection of ten or more typical 'pop' music recordings to be put on a single disc. Previously, such collections, as well as longer classical music broken up into several parts, had been sold as sets of 78 rpm records in a specially imprinted 'record album' consisting of individual record sleeves bound together in book form. The use of the word 'album' persisted for the one-disc LP equivalent. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m) of groove on each side, or about a third of a mile.

Sixty, 'three score' in some older literature, is a composite number with divisors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60, making it also a highly composite number. Because 60 is the sum of its unitary divisors (excluding itself), it is a unitary perfect number, and it is also an excessive number with an abundance of 48. Being ten times a perfect number, 60 is a semi-perfect number.
Sixty is the smallest number divisible by the numbers 1 to 6. (There is no smaller number divisible by the numbers 1 to 5). 60 is the smallest number with exactly 12 divisors. It is one of only 7 integers that have more divisors than any number twice itself (sequence A072938 in OEIS), and is one of only 6 that are also lowest common multiple of a consecutive set of integers from 1, and one of the 6 that are divisors of every highly composite number higher than itself.(sequence A106037 in OEIS).
There are four Archimedean solids with 60 vertices: the truncated icosahedron, the rhombicosidodecahedron, the snub dodecahedron, and the truncated dodecahedron. The skeletons of these polyhedra form 60-node vertex-transitive graphs. There are also two Archimedean solids with 60 edges: the snub cube and the icosidodecahedron. The skeleton of the icosidodecahedron forms a 60-edge symmetric graph.
There are 60 one-sided hexominoes, the polyominoes made from 6 squares. In geometry, 60 is the number of seconds in a minute, and the number of minutes in a degree. In normal space, the 3 interior angles of an equilateral triangle each measure 60 degrees, adding up to 180 degrees.
Because 60 is divisible by the sum of its digits in base 10, it is a Harshad number. A number system with base 60 is called sexagesimal (the original meaning of sexagesimal is sixtieth).
The atomic number of Neodymium is 60.
Sixty is one of the most fascinating numbers. The Babylonian number system had a base of sixty, inherited from the Sumerian and Akkadian civilizations, and possibly motivated by the large number of divisors which 60 has. The sexagesimal measurement of time and of geometric angles is a legacy of the Babylonian system.
The number system in the Mali Empire was also based on sixty (this is reflected in the counting system of the Maasina Fulfulde, a variant of the Fula language spoken in contemporary Mali). The Ekagi of Western New Guinea have also used base 60 and the sexagenary cycle also plays a role in Chinese calendar and numerology.
In the Bible, the number 60 occurs several times, for example as the age of Isaac when Jacob and Esau were born and the number of warriors escorting King Solomon. In the laws of kashrut of Judaism, 60 is also the proportion (60:1) of kosher to non-kosher ingredients which can render an admixture kosher post-facto.
In the Koran, the number 60 is mentioned once: '..he should feed sixty indigent ones..', yet 60 is mentioned many times in the Hadith, most notably Muhammad being reported to say, '..Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, created Adam in His own image with His length of sixty cubits.
In time, the number of seconds in a minute, and the number of minutes in an hour. (a legacy of the Babylonian number system). Eleven is the first number which cannot be counted with a human's ten fingers. In English, it is the smallest positive integer requiring three syllables and the largest prime number with a single-morpheme name. Its etymology originates from a Germanic compound ainlif meaning 'one left'.
If a number is divisible by 11, reversing its digits will result in another multiple of 11. As long as no two adjacent digits of a number added together exceed 9, then multiplying the number by 11, reversing the digits of the product, and dividing that new number by 11, will yield a number that is the reverse of the original number. (For example: 142,312 x 11 = 1,565,432. 2,345,651 / 11 = 213,241.)
Because it has a reciprocal of unique period length among primes, 11 is the second unique prime. 11 goes into 99 exactly 9 times, so vulgar fractions with 11 in the denominator have two digit repeating sequences in their decimal expansions. Multiples of eleven by one-digit numbers all have matching double digits: 00 (=0), 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. Bob Dorough, in his Schoolhouse Rock song 'The Good Eleven', called them 'Double-digit doogies' (soft g). Eleven is the Aliquot sum of one number, the discrete semiprime 21 and is the base of the 11-aliquot tree.
Eleven is the atomic number of sodium. After Judas Iscariot was disgraced, the remaining apostles of Jesus were sometimes described as 'the Eleven'

One is a number, a numeral, and the name of the glyph representing that number. It represents a single entity, the unit of counting or measurement. For example, a line segment of 'unit length' is a line segment of length 1.
Any number multiplied by one is the number, as one is the identity for multiplication. As a result, one is its own factorial, its own square, its own cube, and so on. One is also the empty product, as any number multiplied by one is itself, which produces the same result as multiplying by no numbers at all. So pretty unique.
The glyph used today in the Western world to represent the number 1, a vertical line, often with a serif at the top and sometimes a short horizontal line at the bottom, traces its roots back to the Indians, who wrote 1 as a horizontal line, much like the Chinese character. The Gupta wrote it as a curved line, and the Nagari sometimes added a small circle on the left (rotated a quarter turn to the right, this 9-look-alike became the present day numeral 1 in the Gujarati and Punjabi scripts).
The Nepali also rotated it to the right but kept the circle small. This eventually became the top serif in the modern numeral, but the occasional short horizontal line at the bottom probably originates from similarity with the Roman numeral \\mathrm{I}.
In some European countries (e.g., Germany), the little serif at the top is sometimes extended into a long upstroke, sometimes as long as the vertical line, which can lead to confusion with the glyph for seven in other countries. Where the 1 is written with a long upstroke, the number 7 has a horizontal stroke through the vertical line.

This is a shot of Caroline, a great lady who I was introduced to when taking some fashion shots last November. A fantastic bundle of fun who probably once you know her better, you could trust your life to.
Here she sports a lovely LBD (Little black dress) and the type of difficult to light hat that photographers hate.
An LBD. A Little Black Number. They say no lady's wardrobe is complete without one. Wearing black might not make those extra pounds disappear, but you can trick the eye into believing they have. Caroline doesn't need slimming effects and is a healthy 8-10.
As a general rule though, dressing from head to toe in a single color will instantly make you look slimmer. This is because wearing one color gives you a straight vertical line to look at and doesn’t emphasize any particular areas. When you wear more than one color, the eye is instantly attracted to where the break occurs, which is usually around the waist.
Black increases that slimming illusion because it does not reflect light. Other colors are affected by light, projecting reflections or casting shadows in areas where your body curves or the material bends and wrinkles. Black, on the other hand, doesn’t have this effect, so any imperfections remain hidden under the clothes. In short, black is a very effective color for hiding bulges, lumps and bumps. White highlights all shadows, making bulges and lumps prominent and causing the exact opposite effect of wearing black.
Beware, the slimming effect of black is somewhat diminished if you wear shiny materials like Lycra, satin or sequins. The shine on the clothes will produce reflections and sometimes shadows, depending on the type of cloth. It’s also important to remember that the slimming illusion of black only works from the back or front. If you stand sideways, the shape of your body becomes evident again

Two has many properties in mathematics. An integer is called even if it is divisible by 2. For integers written in a numeral system based on an even number, such as decimal and hexadecimal, divisibility by 2 is easily tested by merely looking at the last digit. If it is even, then the whole number is even. In particular, when written in the decimal system, all multiples of 2 will end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
Two is the smallest and the first prime number, and the only even one (for this reason it is sometimes called 'the oddest prime'). The next prime is three. Two and three are the only two consecutive prime numbers. 2 is the first Sophie Germain prime, the first factorial prime, the first Lucas prime, and the first Smarandache-Wellin prime
Despite being a prime, two is also a highly composite number, because it has more divisors than the number one. Two is the smallest highly composite number. The next highly composite number is four.
Vulgar fractions with 2 or 5 in the denominator do not yield infinite decimal expansions, as is the case with all other primes, because 2 and 5 are factors of ten, the decimal base.
Two is the base of the simplest numeral system in which natural numbers can be written concisely, being the length of the number a logarithm of the value of the number (whereas in base 1 the length of the number is the value of the number itself)
the binary system is used in computers.
The glyph used in the modern Western world to represent the number 2 traces its roots back to the Brahmin Indians, who wrote '2' as two horizontal lines. The modern Chinese and Japanese languages still use this method. The Gupta rotated the two lines 45 degrees, making them diagonal, and sometimes also made the top line shorter and made its bottom end curve towards the center of the bottom line.
Apparently for speed, the Nagari started making the top line more like a curve and connecting to the bottom line. The Ghubar Arabs made the bottom line completely vertical, and now the glyph looks like a dotless closing question mark. Restoring the bottom line to its original horizontal position, but keeping the top line as a curve that connects to the bottom line leads to our modern glyph.
Two is the atomic number of helium. Also the resin identification code used in recycling to identify high-density polyethylene.
Sir Jackie Stewart, who hails from Milton, unveiled this his most successful car, which has been loaned to the National Museum of Scotland for at least three years. It is dark blue with the number two. In the Tyrrell Ford he won eight championships.

Instead, the date is written with the letters representing '9' and '6' (ט-ו, teth and vav).
In tennis, the number 15 represents the first point gained in a game.

The word 'twelve' is the largest number with a single-morpheme name in English. Etymology suggests that 'twelve' (similar to 'eleven') arises from the Germanic compound twalif 'two-leftover', so a literal translation would yield 'two remaining [after having ten taken]'. This compound meaning may have been transparent to speakers of Old English, but the modern form 'twelve' is quite opaque. Only the remaining tw- hints that twelve and two are related.
A group of twelve things is called a duodecad. The ordinal adjective is duodenary, twelfth. The adjective referring to a group consisting of twelve things is duodecuple.
The number twelve is often used as a sales unit in trade, and is often referred to as a dozen. Twelve dozen are known as a gross. (Note that there are thirteen items in a baker's dozen.). the expression 'baker's dozen' dates to the 13th century in one of the earliest English statutes, instituted during the reign of Henry III (1216–1272), called the Assize of Bread and Ale. Bakers who were found to have shortchanged customers (some variations say that they would sell hollow bread) could be subject to severe punishment. To guard against the punishment of losing a hand to an axe, a baker would give 13 for the price of 12, to be certain of not being known as a cheat. Specifically, the practice of baking 13 items for an intended dozen was insurance against 'short measure', on the basis that one of the 13 could be lost, eaten, burnt, or ruined in some way, leaving the baker with the original legal dozen. The practice can be seen in the guild codes of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London.
Force 12 on the Beaufort wind force scale corresponds to the maximum wind speed of a hurricane. The duodenum (from Latin duodecim, 'twelve') is the first part of the small intestine, that is about twelve inches (30 cm) long. More precisely, this section of the intestine was measured not in inches but in fingerwidths. In fact, in German the name of the duodenum is Zwölffingerdarm and in Dutch the name is twaalfvingerige darm, both meaning 'twelve-finger bowel'.
The importance of 12 in Judaism and Christianity can be found in the Bible. The biblical Jacob had 12 sons, who were the progenitors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, while the New Testament describes twelve apostles of Jesus
when Judas Iscariot was disgraced, a meeting was held (Acts) to add Matthias to complete the number twelve once more. (Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.). In Orthodox Judaism, 12 also signifies the age a girl matures (bat mitzvah)
In Twelver Shi'a Islam, there are twelve Imams, legitimate successors of the prophet Muhammad. These twelve early leaders of Islam are—Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and nine of Husayn's descendants. The Chinese use a 12 year cycle for time-reckoning called Earthly Branches.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HW0P - . Highly Textured number 42 On a Peeling Paint Door. Photographed on 2 April 2011. The recorded location is Thelwall lane, Latchford, Warrington, Cheshire, England UK WA4. As background, architecture records the priorities of the period in which a building was designed: materials, ornament, scale and planning can reveal changing technologies, social status and commercial use
Later alterations and changes of tenant add further layers, so a single façade can embody several phases of local history. The wider historical story is that doors, numbers and distressed surfaces are part of the visual archaeology of ordinary streets
Peeling coatings and patina can show material age, previous colour schemes and long use even when the wider building has no formal heritage status. Against the 2026 backdrop, the reuse of existing buildings is increasingly discussed alongside conservation, embodied carbon and town-centre regeneration
Images of older façades and converted premises can therefore illustrate both architectural heritage and the practical pressures of adapting buildings for new uses. In the present 2026 context, interest in adaptive reuse and the character of older buildings has increased attention to patina, repair and whether worn surfaces should be restored or retained
Close details can therefore support design, conservation and urban-texture themes as well as abstract use. From a heritage perspective, buildings are often the most durable evidence of former institutions and businesses
Stonework, brickwork, windows, signs and decorative details can survive changes of ownership and use, allowing photographs to document both architectural style and the evolution of a street. Useful indexing vocabulary includes building façade, historic building, built environment, townscape, streetscape, architectural detail, period architecture, urban design, heritage conservation, commercial architecture, civic architecture, local landmark, and building history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF21W3 - . Black Telephone with rotary dial Emergency Call - 999, Scotland, UK. Photographed on 24 January 2010. Historically, everyday technology provides a compact history of design and changing behaviour
Rotary dials, thermionic valves, mechanical keypads, film cameras and early televisions were once ordinary equipment but now illustrate obsolete standards, manufacturing methods and patterns of work or communication. The wider historical story is that earlier buildings and artefacts provide tangible evidence that written records cannot fully replace
Their wear, construction, signage and setting help researchers understand local history, design, industry and social life across different periods. In 2026, smartphones, digital services and AI-enabled devices make older mechanical and analogue technologies appear even more distant, increasing their value for editorial comparisons about technological change, repairability, planned obsolescence and digital dependence. In the present 2026 context, heritage remains economically and culturally significant through tourism, education and place-making, while the cost of maintaining historic fabric creates continuing debate about conservation and reuse. The historical context is that technical artefacts show how innovation changes daily life: office machines reduced clerical labour, telephones reshaped communication, cameras altered image-making and electronic components enabled broadcasting and computing
Close-up photographs preserve interfaces and designs that quickly vanish from use. In the longer view, technology objects become historical remarkably quickly
Telephones, calculators, cameras, valves, televisions and workplace machines chart successive shifts from mechanical and analogue systems to electronics, digital processing, smartphones and cloud-connected services. Alternative search wording includes technology history, vintage technology, digital technology, electronic equipment, and mechanical device.

The flowers of most poppy species are attractive and are widely cultivated as annual or perennial ornamental plants. This has resulted in a number of commercially important cultivars, such as the Shirley poppy, a cultivar of Papaver rhoeas and semi-double or double (flore plena) forms of the opium poppy Papaver somniferum and oriental poppy (Papaver orientale). Poppies of several other genera are also cultivated in gardens.
