Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DGE75M - The sign for St Wilfrid's Parish Church in the village of Grappenhall near Warrington, Cheshire, is shown during a cold winter period in January with snow settled on the surrounding wall and ground. The red church notice board, displaying service information and parish details, stands prominently against clear blue skies, while frost and snow emphasise the seasonal conditions. In the foreground, memorial plaques commemorate the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the Platinum Jubilee in 2022 of Queen Elizabeth II, linking the church and village directly to national moments of royal celebration and remembrance.
St Wilfrid's Church is an Anglican parish church with deep historical roots in the village, and the presence of jubilee memorials reflects the long-standing connection between the Church of England, the British monarchy and local communities. The image captures a moment where religion, monarchy and village identity intersect, with the winter setting adding a sense of stillness, reflection and continuity. The absence of people allows the focus to rest on the symbols of heritage and commemoration rather than daily activity.
Beyond its local significance, the photograph lends itself to wider editorial use in stories about British royal history, public remembrance, community memorials and the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. It also works as a visual representation of traditional English village life, seasonal change and the role of parish churches as custodians of local and national history. The winter snow and clear light enhance its suitability for heritage publications, educational material, calendars and broader cultural features exploring identity, memory and continuity in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM987T - A tight, documentary close-up of a private car park enforcement notice in Stockport, photographed through a green metal security fence. The sign uses large, high-contrast red lettering on a pale background and is designed for immediate impact, with the key message CLAMPED dominating the lower half. Above it, the full warning reads PLEASE NOTE and NON PAYMENT OF CAR PARKING WILL RESULT IN YOUR CAR BEING CLAMPED, making the threat and the trigger condition clearly legible at a glance. The framing and the fence lines create a slightly confrontational, controlled feel, reinforcing the theme of restriction and enforcement on private land.
The image works well for editorial stories about parking enforcement, private car parks, deterrent signage, and the everyday tensions between motorists and property owners. It can also illustrate wider debates about the fairness and regulation of clamping and parking penalties, consumer awareness of rules, and the importance of prominent signage in disputes. The utilitarian setting, visible fixings, and the barrier fence suggest a backstreet or service-area car park rather than a polished retail environment, adding an authentic, gritty urban texture suitable for news, transport, and local business coverage in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6B9 - A close view of a yellow railway safety warning sign reading Keep back from the platform edge ? Passing trains cause air turbulence, photographed at Warrington Bank Quay railway station, Warrington WA1 1NW, Cheshire. The sign is mounted on a blue-painted column beneath the station canopy, with brickwork and structural elements of the platform visible in the background.
Such warning signs are a familiar feature of the UK rail network and form part of long-established efforts to communicate safety risks clearly to passengers. High-speed passing trains can create sudden air turbulence, particularly on busy mainline platforms, making clear and legible signage an essential component of accident prevention and passenger awareness.
Warrington Bank Quay is a major interchange station on the West Coast Main Line, serving long-distance intercity services as well as regional routes. Stations of this type experience frequent non-stopping services, increasing the importance of platform safety messaging for waiting passengers.
The sign's simple wording, high-contrast colour scheme and durable enamel-style finish reflect traditional British railway design principles, prioritising visibility, clarity and longevity in public safety communication. Images like this are often used editorially to illustrate stories about transport safety, rail infrastructure, commuting culture and everyday risk management in public spaces.
Photographed in daylight with shallow depth of field, the image isolates the warning message while retaining enough environmental context to situate it clearly within a working railway station. It offers strong editorial value for themes including public safety, transport systems, infrastructure design and the lived experience of rail travel in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35BY1 - The Peabody Trust was founded in 1862 as the Peabody Donation Fund and now brands itself simply as Peabody. It is one of London's oldest and largest housing associations with over 100,000 homes across London and the home counties. It is also a community benefit society and urban regeneration agency, with a focus on placemaking, stewardship and a provider of an extensive range of community programmes.
The Trust was founded in 1862 by London-based American banker George Peabody, who in the 1850s had developed a great affection for London, and determined to make a charitable gift to benefit it. His initial ideas included a system of drinking fountains
The Peabody Trust was later constituted by Act of Parliament, stipulating its objectives to work solely within London for the relief of poverty. This was to be expressed through the provision of model dwellings for the capital's poor.
The first block of Peabody dwellings in Commercial Street, Spitalfields. A wood-engraving published in the Illustrated London News in 1863, shortly before the building opened.
The first block, designed by H. A. Darbishire in a red-brick Jacobethan style, opened in Commercial Street, Spitalfields, on 29 February 1864. It cost ?22,000 to build, and contained 57 dwellings (i.e. flats) for the poor, nine shops with accommodation for the shopkeepers, and baths and laundry facilities on the upper floor. Water-closets were grouped in pairs by the staircases, with one shared between every two flats. This first block was followed by larger estates in Islington, Poplar, Shadwell, Chelsea, Westminster, Bermondsey, and elsewhere. By 1882 the Trust housed more than 14,600 people in 3,500 dwellings. By 1939 it owned more than 8,000 dwellings.
In its early days, the Trust imposed strict rules to ensure that its tenants were of good moral character. Rents were to be paid weekly and punctually
there was a night-time curfew and a set of moral standards to be adhered to

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER1D - A penalty charge notice from Cardiff council, is an official notification that you have been found to have committed a minor offence, for which there is a standard penalty charge. PCN are used to streamline the process of penalising minor offenders, without the expense and complication of legal proceedings.
Any offence that has a standard penalty charge, is not an offence that you can be prosecuted for. A penalty charge is not the same thing as an enforceable fine. That being said, you can't just ignore a PCN. You will need to either appeal against it or pay it.
Cardiff council issues Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) for a number of reasons. However, the most common reasons why you might either find one attached to your vehicle or be sent one by post, are for minor traffic rule infractions and parking offences.
If you are issued with a PCN, what do you need to do with it? Can you ignore it, or do you have to pay it? Or is there some way to make an appeal against the PCN?
You can't pay a penalty charge notice in instalments. There are three ways to pay a Cardiff council penalty charge notice. You can pay online, as long as you know the PCN number and have a credit or debit card. There is also a payment hotline that is open 7 days a week, around the clock. You can call 029 2044 5900 and give the PCN number, and then pay using a payment card. Lastly, you can make out a cheque or postal order to Cardiff Council, write the PCN number on the back, and then post it to the following address:
Parking Services, PO Box 47, Cardiff, CF11 1QB

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGHTH - This image shows the doorway and interior of the former Cheshire Style Interiors retail premises on Witton Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. A printed legal notice from L.I.S.S. (Legal Investigation and Support Services) is taped to the inside of the glass frontage, indicating repossession of the property following non-payment of rent and termination of the lease.
The empty interior space behind the glass, combined with the formal notice, documents the closure of a small independent retail business. Reflections in the glass show surrounding mock-Tudor style buildings and bunting across the pedestrianised street, creating a contrast between civic efforts to maintain vibrancy and the reality of vacant premises.
The photograph was taken in daylight, with clear reflections and minimal interior lighting, reinforcing the sense that the shop is no longer trading. Such scenes have become increasingly common across UK town centres, where independent retailers face rising costs, reduced footfall, and long-term structural changes in consumer behaviour.
The image provides a documentary record of retail decline and business closure on the British high street, illustrating the legal and physical aftermath of insolvency within a small town retail environment.

The traditional curved corner shopfront features painted signage reading G E Kee and Art & Craft Materials, with additional lettering indicating an art gallery above the retail premises.
Large red Closing Down Sale signs are displayed prominently in the shop window, signalling the impending closure of the long-established local business. The shop occupies a distinctive corner position on Bridge Street, with period architectural features typical of Coleraine's historic town centre retail buildings.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents the challenges faced by independent specialist retailers in Northern Ireland town centres, particularly those serving creative and artistic communities. It provides a visual record of retail change, local economic pressures, and the gradual loss of traditional high street shops, themes widely relevant across the UK and Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRTD - Grappenhall Independent Methodist Church on Church Lane in the village of Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire, is shown decorated with red, white and blue bunting to mark the coronation of King Charles III. The bunting lines the church railings and grounds, reflecting how local faith communities took part in nationwide celebrations surrounding the coronation.
The church noticeboard displays service information alongside a God Save the King message, linking religious worship with a major moment of national significance. The scene illustrates the role of village churches as both places of worship and focal points for community life during civic and ceremonial events.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents everyday expressions of national celebration within an English village setting. It provides visual context for themes of monarchy, religion, community identity and traditional public observance during the coronation period in the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP6H - A blue metal parking sign displaying the crest of the Duchy of Lancaster and the words Reserved Parking. The sign indicates a restricted parking space associated with land or property managed by the Duchy, a historic Crown estate that provides income for the Sovereign in their role as Duke of Lancaster.
The clear, utilitarian design reflects official property management and access control, with the heraldic crest reinforcing the institutional authority behind the restriction. Such signage is commonly found on or near buildings and land connected to Crown or government estates, where parking is limited to authorised users.
Photographed in close-up, the image documents everyday expressions of constitutional and administrative structures within the UK's built environment. It is suitable for illustrating themes of royal estates, public administration, access control, and the subtle presence of historic institutions in contemporary streetscapes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYP - This image shows a green conservation area sign clearly stating No public access, positioned at the edge of a wooded landscape. Such signage is commonly used across the UK to ?????????ate areas of land that are protected for environmental, ecological, or wildlife conservation purposes, where unrestricted public entry could cause damage or disturbance.
Restricted access zones may protect sensitive habitats, breeding wildlife, forestry operations, or conservation projects, and form part of wider land management and environmental protection strategies. The surrounding trees and natural vegetation reinforce the rural and ecological context of the sign.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to environmental conservation, countryside management, access rights, land use policy, sustainability, wildlife protection, and rural regulation, as well as conceptual illustrations of restriction, preservation, and environmental responsibility.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNYX - This image shows countryside warning signs attached to a wooden farm gate, advising visitors to pick up after their dogs and to keep all dogs on leads. Such signs are commonly used across rural England to balance public access with farming, wildlife protection, and land management.
Dog control notices are particularly important near livestock, crops, and wildlife habitats, helping to reduce disturbance and maintain good relationships between landowners and walkers. The rural setting, with fencing, trees, and traditional brick houses in the background, places the scene firmly within the English countryside.
The warm evening light adds atmosphere while reinforcing themes of responsible access, rural etiquette, and countryside conservation. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use covering dog ownership, countryside access, rural life, land management, public rights of way, and environmental responsibility.

The illustrated sign depicts an adult duck followed by ducklings and includes a conservation message encouraging people not to disturb or chase wildlife.
Such signs are commonly placed near streams, brooks, ponds, and rural paths to raise awareness of local wildlife movements, particularly during the spring and summer breeding season when ducklings are present. The setting, with fencing, grass, and trees, reflects a traditional English countryside environment.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating wildlife protection, countryside access, rural conservation, environmental education, and British nature, as well as conceptual themes around coexistence between people and wildlife.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JD7 - This image shows a Victorian industrial poster headed Rules to be Observed in This Mill, issued in Haslingden, Lancashire, during the mid-19th century. The document sets out a detailed list of rules governing the behaviour, timekeeping, and conduct of workers employed in a textile mill, reflecting the highly disciplined nature of factory life during Britain's Industrial Revolution.
The rules include fines for lateness, talking, leaving machinery unattended, damaging equipment, or disobeying overseers, illustrating the rigid control exercised by mill owners over their workforce. Such notices were commonly displayed in cotton mills across Lancashire, where large numbers of men, women, and children were employed in spinning and weaving under demanding conditions.
The dense typography, formal language, and hierarchical tone of the poster convey the power imbalance between employers and workers in Victorian industrial society. References to overseers, deductions from wages, and dismissal for misconduct provide valuable insight into the everyday realities of 19th-century labour relations before the introduction of modern employment rights and health and safety protections.
Haslingden, located in the Rossendale Valley, was an important centre of the Lancashire cotton industry, and documents like this form a key part of the region's industrial heritage. Today, such posters are studied as primary sources for understanding social history, labour reform, and the lived experience of factory workers during Britain's transformation into an industrial nation.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering the Industrial Revolution, labour history, Victorian Britain, social inequality, textile manufacturing, and the historical development of workplace regulation in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JGY - This image shows a Homes England land notice photographed in Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire. The sign clearly states Private Land. No public access or right of way and includes official contact details, identifying the land as being under the management of the UK government's housing and regeneration agency.
The sign is mounted at the edge of a vegetated area, with dense foliage behind it and the sun low in the sky, casting warm golden light across the scene. The sunset backdrop softens the otherwise formal and restrictive message, creating a visual contrast between natural landscape and regulatory control of land access.
Homes England is responsible for managing public land assets and supporting housing delivery and regeneration across England. Signs like this are commonly used to establish ownership boundaries, restrict unauthorised access, and manage liability on land that may be earmarked for future development or strategic use.
Photographed in evening light during golden hour, the image combines themes of land ownership, access rights, public versus private space, and the role of government agencies in land management. It is well suited to editorial use covering housing policy, planning and development, rural and suburban land use, property law, public access debates, and UK governance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XX3 - Staying safe from terrorism - More at https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/t/terrorism-in-the-uk/staying-safe-from-terrorism/
The threat of terrorism in the UK is real, but with a little knowledge you can increase your safety and help protect yourself against a terrorist attack. Find out below how to stay safe when you're out and about and how to report any suspicious behaviour that could be connected to terrorism.
What you can do
Communities defeat terrorism. We need the help and support of individuals, businesses and communities across the UK to remain alert and maintain the safety and security of those places where we live, work and socialise.
If you see or hear something unusual or suspicious, trust your instincts and ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) by reporting possible terrorist activity in confidence. Any piece of information could be important, so it's better to be safe and report anything you see. You can help the police prevent terrorism and save lives.
Crowded places, events, public transport, and iconic locations throughout the country are some examples of locations that could be potential targets for terrorists.
You're familiar with your workplace and surrounding area, so you're ideally placed to spot when something is amiss. In this period of heightened alert, it is vital to remain vigilant, trust your instincts and report possible terrorist activity to the police.
Look for anything that seems out of the ordinary, such as:
people in stationary vehicles watching a building or structure
vehicles moving slowly near public buildings, structures or bridges, or parked in suspicious circumstances
people using recording equipment, including camera phones, or seen making notes or sketches of security details
someone suspicious paying close attention to specific entry and exit points, stairwells, hallways or fire escapes
people loitering at or near premises for long periods and watching staff, visitors and deliveries for no reason

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J5X - This image shows a yellow railway safety sign mounted on a station platform in the United Kingdom, clearly instructing passengers to Keep back from the platform edge. The accompanying message warns that passing trains can cause air turbulence, highlighting a common but often underestimated risk in busy railway environments.
Such signage forms part of the UK rail network's wider approach to passenger safety, particularly on platforms used by high-speed or non-stopping trains. The sign's bold black text on a yellow background follows established safety-design conventions intended to ensure high visibility and immediate comprehension.
Overhead line equipment and electrical infrastructure are visible in the background, reinforcing the operational context of a modern electrified railway. Together, these elements underline the importance of clear safety communication in public transport settings where large numbers of people move through confined spaces.
Photographed under natural light, the image is well suited to editorial use covering rail safety, public transport infrastructure, passenger behaviour, risk awareness, and the everyday experience of travelling by train in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23BY - The entrance gate to Hampstead Quaker Meeting House, located on Heath Street in Hampstead, north London. The arched gateway bearing the words Friends Meeting House opens onto a quiet garden path leading to the meeting house itself, creating a sense of separation from the surrounding street.
Quaker meeting houses are deliberately plain and functional, reflecting the values of the Religious Society of Friends, which emphasises simplicity, equality, and silent worship without clergy or ritual. The signage at the entrance provides information about meetings for worship and the Quaker approach to faith, underlining the building's role as both a place of spiritual gathering and a community resource.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents a long-established nonconformist place of worship embedded within a London neighbourhood. It illustrates themes of religious diversity, quiet spirituality, and the presence of historic faith communities within the urban fabric of north London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23DB - A Transport for London digital service information display inside Hampstead Underground Station in north London. The screen provides real-time updates on network conditions, listing reduced service on the London Overground, minor delays on the Bakerloo and Jubilee lines, and a general message indicating good service on all other lines.
Such information displays are a key feature of the modern London Underground, designed to keep passengers informed of disruptions, delays, and operational changes across the network. Positioned within station interiors, they form part of TfL's wider passenger-information system, supporting daily commuter travel and visitor navigation.
Photographed under station lighting, the image documents everyday public-transport communication in London, illustrating how real-time digital signage is integrated into historic Underground environments. It is suitable for editorial use relating to urban transport, commuting, infrastructure management, and contemporary life on the London Underground.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MPY9 - Almost at the foot of Hackney Downs station lies Downs Court, a large residential block shouldering a busy road junction. It is a non-descript place, as if the intensity of London's character has taken pause whilst neighbourhoods cross paths. The vibrant quirkiness of Dalston Lane to the West and boozy bustle of Mare Street to the East have long since faded into something less subculture and more generically Hackney-like, as busy roads flow North and places where people live become more prominent than places where people do. Down's Court is a powerful backdrop to this otherwise mundane confluence of place
The building is no doubt one of London's more aesthetically accomplished social housing projects, of which there are perhaps as many as there are stigmatised failures. The block book-ends the South-Western segment of the increasingly popular Pembury Estate ? an area once notoriously plagued by crime
Built in the 1930's, Downs Court is a strapping Art Moderne reinterpretation of London's brick-built mansion blocks, springboarding from the more traditional, economic gallery-access social housing model as used in the Pembury Estate adjacent. The building is prominent and elegant, but essentially rudimentary.
At seven storeys the building is much taller, and also wider, than its more established Victorian neighbours, but it shares the same civic intentions. Brickwork layers alternate between dark red piers abutted to windows and solid strips in light brown. Looming overcast skies or blazing sunshine dependent, the brickworks tonal contrast is more often than not more discrete and registered only subconsciously, but it lends the facade a richness that may not otherwise have been found in its laconic expression. Windows stack perfectly and vary between five and three bays to the three ?street-facing' elevations, whilst smaller, more economic openings are employed to the bedrooms and bathrooms at the back.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23TW - This image shows a coastal safety notice at Filey seafront warning visitors about the dangers of rising tides when accessing Filey Brigg, a narrow rocky headland extending into the North Sea. The sign advises walkers to check the tide table before entering the Brigg and to leave the area at least two hours before high tide to avoid becoming cut off.
Filey Brigg is a popular destination for walkers, anglers, fossil hunters, and tourists, but its natural geography means that access is limited during certain tidal conditions. The warning highlights the risk of people becoming trapped by incoming tides, a recurring hazard on parts of the Yorkshire coast.
The sign includes lifeboat and HM Coastguard contact information, reinforcing the role of emergency services in coastal safety and rescue operations. In the background, the wide sandy beach and calm sea conditions contrast with the potential danger posed by changing tides.
The photograph documents the importance of clear public safety messaging in coastal tourist areas, illustrating how signage plays a key role in protecting visitors, bathers, and walkers unfamiliar with local tidal patterns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBY6G - The Silver Jubilee Bridge (originally the Runcorn?Widnes Bridge or informally the Runcorn Bridge) crosses the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn Gap between Runcorn and Widnes in Halton, England. It is a through arch bridge with a main arch span of 361 yards (330 m). It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge. In 1975?77 the carriageway was widened, after which the bridge was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway. The bridge is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. The bridge was closed to vehicles for refurbishment upon the opening of the new Mersey Gateway Bridge, but reopened as a toll bridge in February 2021
In 1977 the carriageway was widened by incorporating the footpaths, giving it four lanes, and a cantilevered foot-way was built on the east side of the bridge. This work was completed in 1977 and in that year the bridge was renamed from Runcorn Bridge to the Silver Jubilee Bridge to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
Since 1994 the bridge has been illuminated at night by floodlights. Repairs to chloride corrosion of the bridge's deck were carried out in the early 21st century using an innovative electrolytic method
they were shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building of 2010
Traffic on the bridge continued to grow to over 80,000 vehicles a day, and there was frequent congestion. In order to alleviate this, a further crossing was built, known as the Mersey Gateway Bridge. This is a six-lane toll bridge to the east of the Silver Jubilee Bridge that opened on 14 October 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J3K - This image shows exterior signage for the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Breakthrough Church, located on St George's Road in Bolton, Greater Manchester. The sign prominently displays the church name, service times, and contact details, serving both as wayfinding and as an invitation to the local community.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God is a global Pentecostal Christian denomination founded in Nigeria and now established across the UK, Europe, and North America. RCCG congregations often play an important role within African and wider Christian communities, providing spiritual support as well as social and community activities.
The Bolton Breakthrough Church operates regular Sunday and midweek worship services, reflecting the vibrant and structured nature of Pentecostal church life. The signage also highlights the church's urban setting, positioned within a mixed-use town-centre environment behind metal railings and adjacent to modern commercial buildings.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering religion in Britain, Pentecostal Christianity, African diaspora communities, urban churches, faith-based organisations, and contemporary religious life in UK towns and cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3BW - Over 30 million people urged to take up ?vital' flu and COVID-19 vaccines
UKHSA warns of lower levels of natural immunity to flu this year and increased coronavirus (COVID-19) circulation
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging everyone eligible for a free flu vaccine and a COVID-19 booster to take up the offer as soon as possible ahead of what could be a difficult winter with respiratory viruses circulating widely.
International surveillance shows that H3N2 ? a subtype of influenza type A ? is currently the most-commonly detected flu virus worldwide. H3N2 has recently caused waves of infection in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which has also experienced flu circulating earlier than usual in their winter season.
This H3N2 strain circulated in the UK last winter but was held largely in check by COVID-19 restrictions when people mixed a lot less and worked from home. This helped to protect people from catching flu but has also led to lower levels of natural immunity to this strain building up within the population.
There was record uptake of the flu jab in people aged 65 and over in 2021 and 2022 (82%), though there was lower uptake among people in clinical risk groups and pregnant women and these groups are particularly encouraged to come forward this year.
All primary school children and some secondary school children are eligible for the flu nasal spray this year, which is usually given at school. GP surgeries are also inviting children aged 2 and 3 years old (age on 31 August) for this nasal spray vaccination at their practices.
Most young children will not have encountered flu yet. This means they will not have built up any natural immunity to this virus, so it is particularly important for them to take up the flu vaccine this year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR2G5 - Parking on public land and parking on private land are areas that are governed by different sets of rules and enforcement processes.
For the most part, parking on public land is governed by rules set down by local councils and enforced by traffic wardens and/or the police.
Parking on private land, by contrast, is governed by the rules of the contract between the driver and the landowner. It is enforced by the landowner and/or agents working on their behalf
There are two ways a Parking Charge Notice can be served. One is as a ticket on the car and the other is by post to the registered owner's address.
As a rule of thumb, if you are served with a ticket it is well worth checking out whether or not the issuing car park is a member of an Accredited Trade Association (ATA). If they are, they will be able to get your contact details from the DVLA, which they can then use to pursue further legal action in the event of non-response
If you were breaking the rules, then the most sensible and ethical course of action is just to pay up as quickly as you can. ATA members have to offer a discount for early payment. If, however, you think you are being unfairly penalized, then you can write to the operator and request the notice be revoked.
Generally, you will need to demonstrate one (or both) of two points, either you did not break the rules (they made a mistake) or the rules were unenforceable, for example, they were not clearly displayed so you could not reasonably be expected to be aware of them.
If the operator refuses to revoke the notice you can then proceed to formal appeal if you wish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJNH - It is a pretty obvious concept that service areas - which are built to serve motorists - should provide parking. Specifically, parking for all vehicles must be provided free for at least two hours, with more detail given below.
A significant portion of formal complaints regarding motorway service areas relate to parking. How can something so simple go so wrong? There appears to be a mismatch between what customers expect and what they are offered.
For specific queries and complaints you should contact the operator, who are likely to ask anybody complaining about a penalty charge to follow the appeals procedure sent to them.
All official motorway and A-road service areas - that is those with official road signs directing people to them - must provide at least two hours free parking for all road users who are entitled to use the facility. This free short stay must be provided regardless of whether the driver intends to leave the car or not. Older facilities may not be able to provide dedicated parking for each class of vehicle, instead relying on a generic 'long vehicles' area.
The two hour free period has been enshrined in government policy since 1979, on the basis that a motorway service area's primary function is to cater for the immediate needs of motorists and that two hours was considered sufficient. While motorway services can make handy places for car-sharing or meetings, this is not meant to be their priority. There is no rule that charges must apply after two hours, but convention is that all operators charge after two or three hours (four hours is common in Ireland). There is no rule preventing services from asking people to leave after two hours. Buying food or drinks does not absolve the customer of the need to pay for parking.
Note that the rule merely states that two hours free parking must be available, it doesn't state that all parking spaces must be free. There have been reports that some petrol stations are charging vehicles for parking.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A0TWP6 - Penalty notices for parking and motoring offences
Fixed penalty notices were originally introduced for parking and motoring offences, currently continuing in Great Britain under powers provided by the Road Traffic Act 1991 as well as in Northern Ireland
in many areas this style of enforcement has been taken over from police by local authorities. Some other motoring offences (other than parking) can also be dealt with by the issue of FPNs by police, officers of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency or local authority personnel. A fixed penalty notice issued by local authority parking attendants is backed with powers to obtain payment by civil action and is defined as a penalty charge notice (PCN), distinguishing it from other FPNs which are often backed with a power of criminal prosecution if the penalty is not paid
in the latter case the fixed penalty is sometimes designated as a mitigated penalty to indicate the avoidance of being prosecuted which it provides.
If a charge is paid within 14 days of the 28-day period, the charge is decreased by 50%. Appealing against or contesting this notice, requires going through courts and hearings: if lost, the 50% period pay could be extended.
Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) should not be confused with 'Parking Charge Notices, the latter, being issued by private landowners seeking to impose a charge for parking on private land.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy T3RF3C - The Countryside Code is a set of guidelines designed for use by both the public and land managers across England and Wales. It is titled as a guide for enjoying parks and waterways, coast and countryside. It was established in 2004 as a relaunch of the The Country Code, which existed since the 1930s.
The Countryside Code is managed by Natural England in England and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. Whilst both organisations oversee the Countryside Code, they are each individually responsible for promoting it in their respective country.
The Country Code evolved from the work of various organisations and had several different versions from the 1930s. The most widely accepted version of The Country Code was published in 1981 by the Countryside Commission:
Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work
Guard against all risk of fire
Fasten all gates
Keep your dogs under close control
Keep to public paths across farmland
Use gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls
Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone
Take your litter home
Help to keep all water clean
Protect wildlife, plants and trees
Take special care on country roads
Make no unnecessary noise
In the 1960s and 70s the Country Code was publicised by several public information films shown in cinemas and on television.
At some point after 1981, the instruction to fasten all gates was replaced with one to instead leave gates as found

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNPX - This image shows the exterior of Martock Post Office, located on East Street, Martock, Somerset (TA12 6YY). The traditional village post office occupies a prominent corner position in a stone-built property and features clear Martock Post Office signage above the main display window. A red oval Post Office sign marks the entrance, accompanied by hanging baskets that add seasonal colour to the streetscape.
The large front window is filled with community notices, local information, and service posters, reflecting the role of the post office as a key village hub for postal, financial, and community services. Additional signage indicates services such as MoneyGram, highlighting the continued diversification of rural post office functions.
Martock Post Office serves the surrounding Somerset village and nearby rural communities, providing essential services including mail handling, bill payments, and access to basic banking facilities. Images such as this are commonly used to illustrate themes of rural life, village infrastructure, community services, and the changing role of UK post offices.
The photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to British high streets, rural services, local government and community life, and Somerset village identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNR2 - This image shows a printed notice displayed on the door of a charity shop in the village of Martock, Somerset, clearly stating We do not accept any electrical items. The sign is mounted behind glass within a green-painted wooden door, with the heading Martock Charity Shop visible at the top of the notice.
Such signage reflects common safety and compliance requirements faced by UK charity shops, particularly around the acceptance of second-hand electrical goods, which can pose risks related to fire safety, product liability, and PAT testing regulations. Many small, volunteer-run charity shops choose not to accept electrical donations due to the cost and responsibility of testing and certification.
Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes including charity retail, donation restrictions, health and safety, voluntary sector operations, and the realities of running community-based shops in rural English villages. The straightforward, utilitarian design of the notice emphasises clarity and compliance over branding, a typical feature of small local charities.
The photograph is suitable for editorial use in contexts relating to UK charity shops, high street change, community volunteering, retail regulation, and consumer safety awareness.

Where church lane and Broad lane meet is a lovely spot for catching the last rays of sun before heading into the village for a quick pint before tea. I would have liked to have been able to say I could smell a BBQ but it would be a wee fib! Also a blue sky untarnished with smoke trails from planes. All air traffic thankfully grounded by the Iceland volcano.
Grappenhall on the edge of south Warrington is mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Gropenhale. It roughly translates to 'The Groping Place' as my cousin (who has a degree in such matters but also an uncharacteristically un-catholic sense of humour) once explained to me. At the time of the Domesday Grappenhall was stated to be worth five shillings. Lets hope that was just the tax revenue.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have resisted photographing the cat, although may relent if I can find a suitably creative way of doing it.
Parts of the Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes were filmed in the centre of Grappenhall. The 'large room' in Grappenhall village, was converted into a Police station for the filming of the 'Wisteria Lodge' episode of The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett. The 'Rams Head' pub was converted to the 'The Bull Hotel' in the same episode (see www.flickr.com/photos/nathanchantrell/4010783429/in/photo... ).
Grappenhall has a thriving Cricket Club and is part of the CCC. Cheshire County Cricket Club is one of the county clubs which make up the Minor Counties in the English domestic cricket structure, representing the historic county of Cheshire and playing in the Minor Counties Championship and the MCCA Knockout Trophy. The club is based at Cheadle and plays matches around the county at Boughton Hall in Chester, Nantwich, New Brighton, Grappenhall and Alderley Edge.
Oh, and by-the-way, I have reached 300 in my 365 without missing a day so far - yay! (big thanks to Jill, who helped me decide to start, way back in June - Hanx!)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHTH - St Mary and All Saints Church is in the centre of the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches. Richards describes it as one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture remaining in Cheshire. The authors of the Buildings of England series express the opinion that it is one of the most satisfactory Perpendicular churches of Cheshire and its setting brings its qualities out to perfection
It is an impressive church, built generally in the Perpendicular style although the long, and older north transept is constructed in the Decorated style. Built in red sandstone,[2] its plan consists of a west tower, a six-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, and a chancel flanked by chapels to the north and south. The north transept forms the Lady Chapel and the shorter south transept is the Warburton Chapel. At the west end of the south aisle is the south porch. The entire church is crenellated. On the north side of the tower is a sculpture of Saint Christopher and on the south side one of the Blessed Virgin. It has diagonal buttresses and an octagonal south-west turret, a Tudor-arched west window, small arched ringers' windows on the north, west and south faces, a clock on west face, and two-light belfry windows with stone louvres. Its top is crenellated with eight crocketed pinnacles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RKGHC1 - This image shows electronic public transport information displays in the city centre of Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The illuminated boards present service disruption and diversion messages in the German language, informing passengers about road closures, replacement stops, and changes to bus and tram services. The signage includes references to alternative stops and temporary arrangements, along with a public transport website address, highlighting the role of real-time digital communication in urban mobility.
Public transport networks in German cities rely heavily on clear, centralised passenger information, particularly during planned works, street closures, or service disruptions. Electronic display boards such as these are commonly positioned at major stops and interchange points, providing up-to-date guidance to commuters, residents, and visitors. The surrounding urban setting, with bare winter trees and historic architecture visible in the background, places the scene firmly within a European city-centre context.
The image conveys themes of urban transport management, passenger communication, and the practical realities of maintaining public infrastructure in busy cities. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to public transport systems, travel disruption, urban mobility, European cities, infrastructure management, and the everyday experience of commuting in Germany.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35BXW - The Peabody Trust was founded in 1862 as the Peabody Donation Fund and now brands itself simply as Peabody.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCB1 - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street, just off Hope Street, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFER19 - A penalty charge notice from Cardiff council, is an official notification that you have been found to have committed a minor offence, for which there is a standard penalty charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CFEFHW - A close-up view of a yellow railway warning sign mounted on a red-painted column at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire, England. The sign reads, High Speed Trains pass this platform. Keep back from the platform edge behind the yellow line, delivering a clear and direct safety message to passengers waiting on the platform. The surface of the sign shows signs of wear, with chipped paint and weathering that reflect prolonged outdoor exposure and constant public use.
Warrington Bank Quay is a major mainline station on the West Coast Main Line, serving high-speed intercity services as well as regional rail traffic. The warning sign highlights the operational reality of fast-moving trains passing through platforms without stopping, underlining the importance of passenger awareness and compliance with safety guidance in busy transport environments. The bold yellow background and black lettering follow long-established British railway signage conventions designed for maximum visibility and instant comprehension.
The image captures everyday transport infrastructure that is often overlooked but plays a critical role in public safety. The red column, industrial canopy structure and blurred station elements in the background provide contextual cues of a working railway environment. The combination of utilitarian design, worn materials and explicit safety instruction conveys themes of risk management, public responsibility and the practical realities of rail travel in the UK.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering rail transport, passenger safety, infrastructure, commuting and public services, as well as commercial applications relating to transport systems, health and safety messaging, travel awareness campaigns and representations of everyday British railway environments.
