A PUBLIC roadshow will be held at Stockton Heath's Sandy Lane Community Centre on Wednesday, February 28 to highlight widespread improvements to bus services in South Warrington.
Bus company Network Warrington is to introduce the Cheshire Cat a newly branded network that will service the area south of the Ship Canal, starting later this year.
The changes will see buses in the south network simplified, improved and will also see the introduction of a new, cutting-edge bus fleet.
Cheshire Cat branded buses will include the latest transport essentials, including WiFi, skylights, extra leg room, comfy seats and USB charging points.
Network Warrington managing director Ben Wakerley said: I'm pleased that we're making big improvements to the south network that will hopefully have our customers purring. These are truly buses to be seen on!
This latest round of improvements follow our Dallam discount, hospital frequency increase, Pops network and £1.70 to Westy' initiatives, and I can't wait to unveil this further improvement.
We will be introducing 13 new vehicles onto the Cheshire Cat network to ensure that our fleet remains modern, fit for purpose and achieves improvements for the environment.
Cllr Ian Marks, Lymm North & Thelwall, was pleased about the prospect of network improvements, adding: I'm looking forward to seeing the positive changes delivered by Network Warrington and the proposed routing, giving better connections.
The improvements will be announced in full at the roadshow which will also give residents the chance to comment on the service changes before they are officially confirmed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFFEH - Arley Hall is a country house in the village of Arley, Cheshire, England, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Lymm and 5 miles (8 km) north of Northwich. It is home to the owner, Thomas Shelby OBE, MP and his family. The house is a Grade II* listed building, as is its adjacent chapel. Formal gardens to the southwest of the hall are also listed at Grade II* on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In the grounds are more listed buildings, a cruck barn being listed as Grade I, and the other buildings as Grade II. The hall was built for Rowland Egerton-Warburton between 1832 and 1845, to replace an earlier house on the site. Local architect George Latham designed the house in a style which has become known as Jacobethan, copying elements of Elizabethan architecture. A Gothic Revival chapel designed by Anthony Salvin was subsequently built next to the hall. By the mid-20th century parts of the house were in poor condition and were demolished, to be replaced by five private homes in a matching architectural style. The present gardens were created in the 1830s, and were developed during the 20th century. The garden's herbaceous border was one of the first of its type in Britain, and remains one of the finest. The house and its gardens have been open to the public since the 1960s, and have also been used as a film location. The town's MP spent Sunday at the scene along with Environment Agency staff, speaking to residents and businesses who had been impacted by the flooding.
He has now written to the Environment Agency and Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers calling for an urgent probe into the flooding. Waitrose car park was flooded.
Mike said: This has had a devastating impact on many local residents and it's clear questions need to be answered about what happened.
Environment Agency and council staff on the ground did a fantastic job at the scene, but in terms of the wider picture we need to know how this happened so we can ensure it doesn't happen again.
Flood defences were put to the test in July 2018.
New £7m defences were installed in June 2017, after costly floods hit the town centre which sits at the the confluence of the rivers Weaver and Dane in 2000 and again in 2012.
While the first phase of demountable barriers was put up on Friday night, Waitrose car park and Dane Street flooded on Saturday with photos showing drains in the road struggling to cope.

Joseph Bamford was born into a recusant Catholic family in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, which owned Bamfords Ltd, an agricultural engineering business.
His great grandfather Henry Bamford was born in Yoxall, and had built up his own ironmongers business, which by 1881 employed 50 men, 10 boys and 3 women. Bamfords International Farm Machinery became one of the country's major agricultural equipment suppliers, famous for its balers, rakes, hay turners, hay Wufflers, Mangold cutters, and standing engines, which were exported all over the world. The company eventually ceased trading in 1986.
After attending Stonyhurst College, he joined the Alfred Herbert company in Coventry, then the UK's largest machine-tool manufacturer, and rose to represent the firm in Ghana. He returned home in 1938 to join the family firm, but in 1941 was called up by the RAF to serve in World War II. Working in supply and logistics, he returned to the African Gold Coast, to run a staging post for USAF planes being ferried to the Middle East.

On return home in 1944, Bamford initially worked for English Electric developing electric welding equipment in Stafford. A short return stint with the family firm proved too stifling, and his Uncle Henry released him, saying he thought Joe had little future ahead of him. After selling Brylcreem for a short while, in October 1945 Bamford rented a 10 ft (3 m) by 15 ft lock-up garage for 30 shillings (= £1.50) a week, and made a farm trailer from scrap steel and war surplus Jeep axles, using a prototype electric welder bought for £2-10s (= £2.50). He opened for business on the day his first son, Anthony, was born, and sold the trailer for £45 and a cart, which he also repaired and sold for another £45.

A fingerpost (sometimes referred to as a guide post) is a traditional type of sign post primarily used in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, consisting of a post with one or more arms, known as fingers, pointing in the direction of travel to places named on the fingers.
The posts have traditionally been made from cast iron or wood, with poles painted in black, white or grey and fingers with black letters on a white background, often including distance information in miles. In most cases, they are used to give guidance for road users, but examples also exist on the canal network, for instance. They are also used to mark the beginning of a footpath, bridleway, or similar public path
Mandatory standards (The Traffic Signs (Size, Colour and Type) Provisional Regulations) were passed for Great Britain in 1933 which required poles to painted with black and white bands and lettering to be of a different typeface. Signposts were removed across much of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during World War II, lest enemy forces use them for navigation, and replaced in the late 1940s.
Road signing was next comprehensively reviewed in the United Kingdom from 1961 by the government-appointed Worboys Committee and the 1964 Traffic Signs Regulations brought in the signing system largely remaining in force today.
Whilst the 1964 regulations did encourage local authorities to remove and replace traditional fingerposts with the new designs, it was not made compulsory to do so. Regulations did not, however, permit new fingerpost style signs to be erected until a design was permitted by the Department for the Environment in 1994 (in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions of that year).
Of note was that the design did not allow for mileages of over three miles to be expressed with the use of halves and quarters. It is thus that new fingerposts have been required to round the previously more accurate distance measurements.
Whilst the 1964 regulations did not bring about a general requirement to remove all fingerposts in Great Britain (signage in Northern Ireland being treated somewhat separately), some counties appear to have been more zealous than others in eradicating them.
Fingerpost survival is highest in rural areas and away from major roads. Reacting to concern about the loss of historic fingerposts from the rural landscape, an advisory leaflet[4] was issued by the Department for Transport and English Heritage in June 2005 which stated that 'All surviving traditional fingerpost direction signs should be retained in-situ and maintained on a regular basis. They should be repainted every five years in traditional black and white livery. Other colours should be used only when these are known to have been in use before 1940'.
In recent years several county councils have embarked on restoration and repair programmes for their fingerpost stock, including the Highway Heritage Project in the Quantock Hills of Somerset.

Badgers are protected and so are the setts (burrows) they live in. Under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, in England and Wales (the law is different in Scotland) it is an offence to:
Wilfully kill, injure or take a badger (or attempt to do so).
Cruelly ill-treat a badger.
Dig for a badger.
Intentionally or recklessly damage or destroy a badger sett, or obstruct access to it.
Cause a dog to enter a badger sett.
Disturb a badger when it is occupying a sett.
But there are exceptions. Licences to undertake some actions can be issued if it is justified, for example where a badger sett is found on a proposed site for a road or housing development.
Bulldozing a sett in the way of a new road would risk killing or injuring the badgers, so Natural England or Natural Resources Wales may grant a licence allowing the badgers to be carefully excluded, making them move elsewhere in their territory.

Protecting badgers
Badgers were given some limited protection in 1973 but weaknesses in the law meant that badger setts were still being dug, bulldozed, blocked or the animals cruelly killed.
The RSPCA successfully campaigned for better protection and help enforce the law by assisting with police investigations or prosecuting people involved in wildlife crime such as badger digging and baiting.
Undercover RSPCA inspectors have helped bring a number of successful badger digging cases before the courts.

Legislation was enacted in England in 1697 which enabled magistrates to place direction posts at cross-highways. However, the oldest fingerpost still extant is thought to be that close to Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, dated 1669 and pointing to Oxford, Warwick, Gloucester and Worcester (abbreviated to 'Gloster' and 'Woster'). The Highways Act 1766 and Turnpike Roads Act 1773 made use of fingerposts on turnpike roads compulsory.
The Motor Car Act 1903 passed road sign responsibilities to the relevant highway authority within the then United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, although no specifications were set. Guidance was given in a 1921 circular that road direction signs should have 2 1⁄2-or-3-inch-high (64 or 76 mm) upper case lettering on a white background and white supporting poles. It was produced by Lime Pictures with filming taking place in the spring of 2014. The series premiered on 10 October 2014 on Disney Channel in the United Kingdom, on 17 October 2014 on Disney Channel in the United States and Family Channel in Canada, and on 31 October 2014 on Disney Channel in Australia and New Zealand.
On 19 March 2015, the miniseries was picked up for a full series of a further 20 episodes and was confirmed under the new title of The Evermoor Chronicles as a continuation to the original. I remember hearing and dancing to this one drunken night at the State Ballroom in Liverpool. I met an angel that night, who should have in retrospect changed my life. Sorry dear, I messed up not you. Funny thing fate and life.
'Ride on Time' is a 1989 song recorded by band Black Box. It was later released on their debut LP Dreamland. The song was a chart success in many countries and a number-one hit in the UK and Ireland.
The song was written and produced by the Italian production team Groove Groove Melody, consisting of DJ Daniele Davoli, programmer Mirko Limoni and musician Valerio Semplici. The team worked with French model Katrin Quinol, who was the face and image for the group Black Box. In the video and in live performances Quinol lip-synced to the original vocals.
The song sampled Loleatta Holloway's 1980 disco hit 'Love Sensation' and attracted some controversy for the uncredited use of Holloway's vocals from that song. Holloway's counsel engaged in a press attack on Black Box, successfully securing a settlement that paid the singer an undisclosed sum
the group had legally cleared the samples with Salsoul Records, who had released the original track, but Holloway was in arrears for advances from the label and thus was not recompensed by Salsoul. The song would be sampled 22 years later in the 2011 song 'Still Speedin'' by Sway.
For the re-release of the song, Heather Small re-recorded the vocals.
The song's title derives from a sample of Holloway singing the lyrics 'Thank you baby, 'cause you're right on time'. Daniele Davoli explained in Channel 4 documentary Pump Up The Volume that because of his limited knowledge of English at the time, he thought that Loleatta Holloway sang 'ride on time' instead of 'right on time'.

While minding my own business munching through my lunchtime Peking duck wrap, I was reminded of the turning of the season. A half brown, half green leaf landed on the bench next to me and a cool breeze made me zip up my jacket. Autumn (or you may call it fall) has arrived.
This track Autumn Shade comes from the Australian alternative rock band The Vines 2002 album 'Highly Evolved'. It was produced by Rob Schnapf, Highly Evolved was an immensely popular debut, part of a trend towards garage rock revival bands known as much for the relentless hype from the UK music press as for their music
The Vines were frequently compared to Nirvana. The debut single, 'Highly Evolved', was chosen as Single of the Week by influential British music magazine New Musical Express. They also voted it the 2nd best album of the year in 2002.
Originally named Rishikesh and formed 1994 in Sydney, they play a musical hybrid of 1960s garage rock and 1990s alternative music.
Since 2006 their line-up has consisted of vocalist and lead guitarist Craig Nicholls, rhythm guitarist Ryan Griffiths, bass guitarist Brad Heald, and drummer Hamish Rosser.
Upon the release of their debut album, The Vines were hailed as \u201cthe second coming of Nirvana' by the British press
their grungy sound was considered reminiscent of the Seattle scene circa \u201991, and Nicholls' erratic on-stage behavior and raw vocals drew comparisons between him and Kurt Cobain. Highly Evolved became a huge success and their accompanying live shows in the early years were praised as 'electrifying' and 'sensational'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BKC2D0 - The River Weaver is a river, navigable in its lower reaches, running in a curving route anti-clockwise across west Cheshire, northern England. Improvements to the river to make it navigable were authorised in 1720 and the work, which included eleven locks, was completed in 1732. An unusual clause in the enabling Act of Parliament stipulated that profits should be given to the County of Cheshire for the improvement of roads and bridges, but the navigation was not initially profitable, and it was 1775 before the first payments were made. Trade continued to rise, and by 1845, over £500,000 had been given to the county.
The major trade was salt. The arrival of the Trent and Mersey Canal at Anderton in 1773 was detrimental to the salt trade at first, but ultimately beneficial, as salt was tipped down chutes from the canal into barges on the river navigation. Access to the river was improved in 1810 by the Weston Canal, which provided a link to Weston Point, where boats could reach the River Mersey at most states of the tide, as the water was deeper. The navigation was completely reconstructed between 1870 and 1900, with the original locks being replaced by five much larger locks, capable of handling 1000-tonne coasters. With the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, a new lock was constructed at Weston Marsh, which gave direct access to the ship canal without having to pass through the docks at Weston Point. All water from the river entered the canal nearby, and any surplus was released into the Mersey through the Weaver sluices, which were located just upstream of the junction.

A cracking track from 1988's 'That Petrol Emotion'. They formed in 1984 from the ashes of the Derry Hitmakers, Bam Bam and the Calling and The Undertones. It was formed by guitarist John O'Neill and second guitarist Raymond Gorman who DJ'd together at the Derry 'Left Bank' club. Drummer and friend Ciaran McLaughlin joined next after having relocated from Derry to London, followed by John's brother and Undertones lead guitarist Damian O'Neill who played bass from 1985 until 1988 upon John's departure.
That Petrol Emotion themselves were also far more political and outspoken than the Undertones. 'Abandon' released on Virgin Records in March 1990 in the UK reached no. 73 in the single charts.

I first heard this track on a free Q magazine compilation and that CD was stuck in my car for several months. Its one of my favourites and comes up quite a lot on my iPod.
PJ Harvey (born 9th October 1969) is an English musician and singer-songwriter. Raised in Corscombe, Dorset. She formed the band (calling it PJ Harvey) as a teenager with drummer Rob Ellis and bassist Ian Olliver, who was replaced with Steve Vaughan.
The trio released their first album Dry in 1992. Ellis and Vaughan left the band after the release of Rid of Me (1993), and Harvey continued as an acclaimed solo artist.
As Harvey embarked on her solo career, she explored collaborations with other musicians. To Bring You My Love (1995) was produced by Flood (Mark Ellis) and John Parish, and was a worldwide success, selling over one million copies, according to BPI.
A more bluesy record than its predecessors, it saw Harvey broadening her sonic palette to include strings, organ and synthesizers. It also generated a surprise modern rock radio hit with this single 'Down by the Water'. The album received a glowing critical response and ended up being voted Album of the Year by The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, USA Today, People, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Harvey was also voted Artist of the Year by Rolling Stone.
Offstage, Harvey has cultivated a reputation for eccentricity to match her music
for example, Steve Albini claimed she ate nothing but potatoes while making Rid of Me. Harvey describes herself as 'an extremely quiet person, who doesn't go out much, doesn't talk to people', and rejects the notion that her songs are autobiographical. She told The Times in 1998, 'The tortured artist myth is rampant. People paint me as some kind of black witchcraft-practising devil from hell, that I have to be twisted and dark to do what I am doing. It's a load of rubbish'.

Space were Marseille's answer to Dusseldorfs Kraftwerk. A little softer, more french, more disco, but in the same vein. This hit single from the album of the same name only really came to my attentiona decade later after listening to too much New Order (can you do such a thing you may ask?).
Space was founded in 1977 by Didier Marouani (also known as Ecama), Roland Romanelli, and Jannick Top. The first three albums \u2014 Magic Fly, Deliverance and Just Blue \u2014 were an immediate success (they sold over 12 million records all over the world).
The album Magic Fly, which is widely considered to be their best work, was released in audio cd in 2001, 24 years after its original release. Although Didier Marouani left the band in 1979, the other two members Roland Romanelli and Jannick Top released in 1980 the album Deeper Zone under the name of Space. Then Space officially split up in 1981.
In early 1980s Marouani, with Janny Loseth of Titanic as lead vocalist, continued to perform and record under the titles of Didier Marouani &
Space, and Paris-France-Transit due to release lawsuits. The name 'spAce' was legally reacquired after some artistic copyright disputes around 1990, allowing musicians to re-release classic albums and give a European live cover tour in 1993.
The latest Space album was released in 2002. In the same year, the S Club Juniors made a remix to their single 'New Direction' featuring the backing track of 'Magic Fly'. The band's hit 'Magic Fly' as well as many other songs from the self-named album were remixed in 2003 by the Belgian dance music project Minimalistix.

Damselflies (suborder Zygoptera) are insects in the order Odonata. Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along, and parallel to, the body when at rest.
Furthermore, the hindwing of the damselfly is essentially similar to the fore-wing, while the hind-wing of the dragonfly broadens near the base, caudal to the connecting point at the body. Damselflies are also usually smaller, weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.
Interestingly, Damselflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with an aquatic nymph stage. The female lays eggs in water, sometimes in underwater vegetation, or high in trees in bromeliads and other water-filled cavities.
Nymphs are carnivorous, feeding on daphnia, mosquito larvae, and various other small aquatic organisms, using extendable jaws similar to those of the dragonfly nymph. The gills of damselfly nymphs are large and external, resembling three fins at the end of the abdomen.
After moulting several times, the winged adult emerges and eats flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects. Some of the larger tropical species are known to feed on spiders, hovering near the web and plucking the spider from its nest.

for the Azure Damselfly it is the other way around. The second segment of the thorax has a distinctive spot with a line below connecting to the third segment.
Another difference can be observed when inspecting the side of the thorax. The Common Blue Damselfly has only one small black stripe there, while all other blue damselflies have two.
During mating, the male clasps the female by her neck while she bends her body around to his reproductive organs this is called a mating wheel. The pair flies together over the water and eggs are laid within a suitable plant, just below the surface.
The eggs hatch and the larvae, called nymphs, live in the water and feed on small aquatic animals. Nymphs climb out of the water up a suitable stem to moult into damselflies.

It generally doubled up as sweet and newspaper shop too. Many towns had a cigar specialist with exotic wares available loose or in exotic wooden boxes by the dozen.
Many years ago Northwich had such a shop, evidence of which was only recently uncovered when hordings were removed on a shop in the main shopping street. This painted sign must be over 50 years old. The general distain that tobacco and its products are now held (although not the tax revenue they generate) has reduced drastically the number of quality outlets on our streets.
Minors are not allowed to enter them lest they see tobacco (a bit like tobacco websites, its easier to accidently see pornography than some Cuban Guantanamera's on one of these). A supplier you can speak to and offer tasting notes and advice is worth valuing.
Cigar smokers mention to me that they should be bought loose or in an already opened box if possible. You know what you are buying. Avoid a sealed box as you dont know what you are buying. Occasionally tobacco beetle can be found transported with the contents. A very unwelcome passenger who has hitched a ride of a few thousand miles!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4749916828 - 'St Helen's, Witton, also known as 'Northwich Parish Church' towers over the town. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich. Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches.
The church was originally a chapel of ease to St Mary and All Saints, Great Budworth and the area was then known as Witton. The present building dates from the 14th century, with additions in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries.
A tradition that Witton had a chapel as early as the 13th century cannot be verified, but by the mid-14th century a church (technically a chapel of ease) stood on the present site. It was roughly the same length as the current building, had transepts but no aisles, side chapels or clerestory, and was covered by a steeply-pitched roof rising from about the height of the present arcade. There would have been a chancel arch with a great beam or loft across it bearing a rood, but no chancel step. The only seats would have been stone benches around the walls.
Gradually this evolved into the church as it is today. North and south aisles, narrower than those currently present, were added in the 15th century. The tower was built or rebuilt in about 1498, and the name \u2018Thomas Hunter\u2019 prominently displayed on it indicates it was the work of the mason of that name who was also associated with nearby Norton Priory outside Runcorn.
The church is built in red sandstone with flattish roofs concealed by parapets. The plan consists of a tower at the west end, a six-bay nave with north and south aisles, a chancel with a polygonal east apse, a vestry to the north and a south porch. The tower has four stages, is crenellated and has diagonal buttresses and a west door. Above this is a four-light window, two-light bellringers' windows on the north and south faces, an empty niche on the west face, a clock with faces to all sides and paired two-light bell openings

It is related to french boules and goes back to the 13th century. These days in pubs across the land, ex-sunday league pub footballers, quite often go out to grass on the crown green.
Bowls, can be either flat- or crown-green, is usually played outdoors, tradionally on grass and synthetic surfaces. To escape british winter, flat-green bowls can also be played indoors on synthetic surfaces. When national and international matches are televised, this is usually the surface used. Around \u00a3100,000 in prizes are available in annual competition and has been watched by up to 3 million viewers on the BBC.
The world's oldest surviving bowling green is said to be the Southampton Old Bowling Green, which was first used in 1299. The worlds longest surviving bowler may be much older, maybe the sport keeps them young (!).
Bowling has a colourful history and was banned in the time of Richard II, when it was thought it may deminsh archery, important for battle. By a further act of 1541 - which was not repealed until 1845 - artificers, labourers, apprentices, servants and the like were forbidden to play bowls at any time except Christmas, and then only in their master's house and presence. It was further enjoined that any one playing bowls outside his own garden or orchard was liable to a penalty of 6s. 8d., while those possessed of lands of the yearly value of \u00a3100 might obtain licences to play on their own private greens.
Many British pubs today are named 'The Bowling Green' and indeed, have a well manicured one to the rear.
In 1864 William Wallace Mitchell (1803-1884), a Glasgow Cotton Merchant, published his 'Manual of Bowls Playing' following his work as the secretary formed in 1849 by Scottish bowling clubs which became the basis of the rules of the modern game. Young Mitchell was only 11 when he played on Kilmarnock Bowling green, the oldest club in Scotland, instituted in 1740.

Its got to be the mascot up at Cheshire's top hand car wash Garnett. They are a really friendly team down there and do a cracking job. I can recommend them.
Look out for the mascot which will be around town from now and into the summer to promote the business that covers cars, valets, drives and conservatories from their base at Old Warrington road, Northwich and out at Tatton adjacent to the Little Chef on the A556. They also clean Fascias, Caravans and even done the odd Tractor believe it or not. Handy as they are insured with NFU (originally the farmers mutual).
Back in December, the local council, Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC), took offence at the companies distinctive green and yellow A-Boards. I am unsure if it was the colour or size that was the nature of the complaint. If it was that they were prominent, isn't that the point? I have still noticed plenty of A-Boards around town. To be consistant shouldn't they all be banned?
Shirley Wingfield, a spokesman for CWAC, was reported in the Northwich Guardian as saying \u201cWe do not regard what Mr Garnett was advertising on as A-boards, we regard it as fly posting. \u201cWe act when incidents are reported to us and people are asked not to do it again. If they persist they are issued with a fixed penalty notice.\u201d
Personally I thought I thought I had a good idea what a fly posting was, but maybe not!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4615776482 - 'Here is a great ceiling of white blossom, some kind of apple I think. We seem to be awash with blossom at the moment. I dont know if its better than usual near me or just a bit better this year after the particularly harsh winter.
Thinking about that theme, the National Trust (NT) have launched a light-hearted competition asking for contributions towards a Japanese-style 'renga' poem on teh subject of the spring blossom.
Renga is an art form going back centuries, where one poet writes a verse before passing their contribution on to another. Blossom, a popular obsession in Japan is a traditional subject matter.
The National Trust's 36 verse poem will plan to track the country's orchards as they blossom from south to north in the coming weeks. The first 12 started at the Mother Orchard on the Cotehole Estate near Saltash in Cornwall, an eight-acre orchard filled with 120 apple tree varieties as well as cherries, pears and plums.
The middle 12 will be composed with the help of the public over the following 14 days, as the trees blossom across the country.
Aspiring renga poets can submit their verses for consideration online at a special website, www.orchardnetwork.org.uk . The best will be picked for inclusion in the final poem bythe Trust's poetry experts. The final 12 verses will be written at Acorn Bank in Cumbria, mid May.
Good for families the events at Cotehele and Acorn Bank will include picnics under the trees, bug hunts, blossom walks and wildlife displays. A great many of Englands orchards have been lost over the last 50 years and hopefully, this will help revive interest in Adams Pearmain, Ashmead's Kernel, Beauty of Bath, Egremont Russet and Sufolks Sturmer Pippin.

I do not know if this chap was waiting for Neil Tennant who was partaking of a burger and a pint of carling at the Penny Black, just up Witton Street for \u00a33.49, or any of Northwich's other musical icons. On a side note, the Melting Pot cafe has now had a new paint job, making it almost unrecognisable as the cover for The Charlatans (UK for any US readers) greatest hits album. More details here.

If I was a bike enthusiast I think I would like to make my final journey like this. A black motorcycle hearse. In recent times, the Motorcycle plus side-hearse has become more popular. This type of hearse is a motorcycle with a special side-vehicle built to carry a casket or an urn. These hearses are often used during the funeral of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.
Motorbikes have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance travelled when compared with cars. In 2004, figures from the UK Department for Transport indicated that motorcycles have 121 deaths or serious injuries per 100 million vehicle kilometers, compared to the corresponding figure of 2.6 for motorists. IE over 50 times more likely. This is due to the increased power and acceleration of bikes, but also size and ability of motorists to spot and make allowance for them.
This situation is helped by higher-visibility gear (not as sexy as the all-black leather iconic approach, but more practical), use of abrasion resistive gear and padding, Full face helmet (skidlid) with gloves and boots. All this gear on mopeds can look rather silly (although safe) and I remember in my first job a workmate being nicknamed 'Evil Kenevil' due to how bizarre this looked.
In the UK, for example, organizations such as the IAM and RoSPA offer advanced motorcycle rider training with the aim of reducing accident rates. There is often an added incentive to riders in the form of reduced insurance premiums.

He has had his face fungus now for well over 20 years. On one occasion when he had it shaved off at the barbers he was so unrecognisable that his next door neighbour thought he was a burgler, who had climbed into the back garden! He was simply unrecognisable!
Bob does alsorts around the centre which has now grown into quite a multi-faceted complex. There is even a working Brewery making traditionally crafted cask ales on the site. Yep I do have a nose for that kind of stuff!
In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom and knowledge, sexual virility, masculinity, or high social status
and, conversely, filthiness, crudeness, or an eccentric disposition. In many cultures, beards are associated with nature and outdoorsmen. I remember in my mis-spent youth enjoying the band ZZ Top, strangely the only member of the band without a beard is in fact called Frank Beard (credited as Rube Beard on early LP's). However it must be said that he did in fact sport some facial hair, generally only a trimmed mustache.
In 1984, the Gillette Company (one of the worlds largest razor manufacturers) reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill (the bearded members of ZZ Top) $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial. They allegedly declined, saying 'We're too ugly without 'em'. Apparently the name came from blues guitar master B. B. King. The band had planned to call themselves ZZ. King, but felt it was too similar. Since B.B. King was at the 'top', they settled on ZZ Top.

I have had a few chip suppers from Petes when photographing gigs and bands just down the road at the w=33062170@N08\'>Winnington Park Rec'. I can recommend his fish in cajun spiced batter, just have some lager at the ready! His sign states 'Simply The Best Chippy In Winnington'. That cannot be denied as he has the 'only' chippy in Winnington, however he does do top chips!
Fish and chips, often referred to as national takeaway food of these islands originated in the victorian era. It is pretty much everywhere and even in rural areas, like Cornwall or Mull, it often arrives by mobile van in the evening. Around 1860, it is legend that the first fish and chip shop was opened in London by Jewish proprietor Joseph Malin who married together 'fish fried in the Jewish fashion' with thick chiped potatoes. In 1863 the chip shop reached Manchester, when a Mr Lees opened a shop in Mossley. Interestingly, throughout world war II, fish and chips remained one of the few foods in the United Kingdom not subject to rationing. Salt and vinegar (spirit preferred) or gravy usually goes with it.
Across britain, fish and chip shops offer a varied menu. Pete covers the usual staples
mushy peas, Dinaclass curry sauce, sausages, heated (but not fried) pies and suit puddings, gravy, fried chicken. Further north you can expect scallops (wide slices of potato in batter), deep fried Mars bars, deep fried pizza and haggis are popular in Scotland. In Edinburgh you would most likely buy a 'supper' with 'Salt n sauce' (watered down brown sauce - 'sottensauce'). In many places you can buy a whole picked egg or individual pickled onions too. In east Anglia and the south east fish roes or rock salmon can often be found.
Most places use vegatable oil these days, but a few proudly fry in lard (and generally have a sign outside shouting the fact). Waste frying oil is sometimes nowadays used to make bio-diesel. Older diesel cars can often run on it without modification. I would not try it in a HDI style engine though!
As a kid I remember the local chippy doing fizzy minerals too. Ben Shaws from Huddesfield with 2p back on the bottle, which was returned. Collect enough of those to take back and you had enough for a bag of chips with batter bits (and pea-wet if you couldn't afford a proper portion of green mushy peas). You always got it in newspaper too, that was before the possible perils of printers ink were legislated for. Still the terrible names are still there

Two of the proudest moments in Jaguar's long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race, firstly in 1956 and again in 1957, in the hands of the little known Scottish racing team called Ecurie Ecosse whose name later went down in legendary status for twice pulling off a David v Goliath effort in the famed car killing race.
The Jaguar XF is marketted a mid-size executive car that was introduced in 2008 to replace the out-going S-Type in the company's line-up. In January 2008, the XF was awarded the What Car? 'Car of the Year' and 'Executive Car of the Year' awards. The XF was also awarded Car of the Year 2008 from What Diesel? magazine.

They include the Hayhurst swing bridge and Northwich Town bridge, which are believed to be the earliest swing bridges powered by electricity. Both have a sectional pontoon, which is immersed in the river and carries about 80 per cent of the weight of the bridge. Dutton Horse Bridge, which carries the towpath over the weir stream at Dutton, is one of the earliest surviving laminated timber structures. A chapel has stood on this site of the present church since the founding of the Cistercian Abbey of Vale Royal in 1277. The Cistercian were known as the white monks and the name of the village at the gate of the abbey refers to this. He looks after the allocation of burial and cremation plots at Northwich and Rudheath in Cheshire. He is a great chap and I was inspired to have a little window into his job.
It is his job to catalog each interment and here he is looking at a ledger of burials from 1893 onwards. Documentation becomes sparse much before this. All of the records in Northwich are in fact paper records in ledgers like this, they have not yet been computerised or fully digitised. Often a usual day at his office is taken up at least in part by family tree enquiries and manual searches of the books of carefully hand written entries. The books are now getting quite worn and tired, some flaking and coming apart unfortunately.
I had quite a long interesting chat with Chris, who as you might expect had quite an enlightened view of death and burial. The British and indeed largly northern European view of it tend to keep it hidden. However it is the only one of two things we will all encounter in life, the second being tax.
Human burial practices are generally bourne from the human desire to demonstrate 'respect for the dead'. Also to prevent the possibilities of revenants harming the living.
Here are the main reasons for this-
Respect for the physical remains. If left lying on top of the ground, scavengers may eat the corpse, considered disrespectful to the deceased in many (but not all) cultures. In Tibet, Sky burials return the remains to the cycle of life and acknowledge the body as 'food,' a core tenet of some Buddhist practices. Parsi's in India expose the body to the air, birds, insects etc to be picked clean. This last one is not so far away from what ancient britons did when bones were picked clean then stored in communal chambers, as have been found in the Scotish hebrides and particularly on Mull.
Burial can be seen as an attempt to bring closure to the deceased's family and friends. Psychologists in some Western Judeo-Christian quarters, as well as the US funeral industry, claim that by interring a body away from plain view, the pain of losing a loved one can be lessened.
Many cultures believe in an afterlife. Burial is sometimes believed to be a necessary step for an individual to reach the afterlife.
Many religions prescribe a particular way to live, which includes customs relating to disposal of the dead.
He is seeing a rise in green / natural funerals. Bodies buried five to ten feet down in a wicker or biodegradable container, sometimes not even in a traditional cemetary setting. Cremation is becoming ever more popular too. Suffice to say, Chris and the job he does should be safe for sometime to come.

Here on a bill with Crewes AQUO and Blue Gillespie (of south Wales). A lot of the new stuff was played and it will be a long five weeks until the release of 'Dreams Of Death &
The Death Of Dreams' which must be well worth getting hold of. You used to be able to buy their first EP, 'A Demon For Every Occasion' at gigs, I remember scrounging a copy several years back. The new album was cut in 2009 at Parlour Studios Northampton with acclaimed metal producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death/Evile blah da blah...) at the mixing desk.

Sons in Cuddington, Northwich, Cheshire UK. It makes a refreshing change to visit a real butcher, rather than the pre-packaged and shrink wrapped conveyor belt plastic meat from the supermarket, although in In English, the name Lyulph is a variant of Lyulf: A compound of the Old English words for flame and wolf.
He was named after Arthur Lyulph Stanley who was a relative of his father and Liberal elected MP for the mainly rural parliamentary constituancy of Eddisbury. Arthur awarded KCMG (14 September 1875 \u2013 22 August 1931), also 5th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 4th Baron Eddisbury, was an English nobleman and Governor of Victoria from 1914 to 1920. Thus a suitable role model to name your child after I guess. The name Lyulph has origins in Scandinavia.
The butcher shop in Cuddington has a long history and in the 1930's there was a fatality when a butcher's boy, Les Watson (brother of Joan Underwood) was involved in a collision with a mail van while riding his delivery bicycle on Swan Hill.

Its modus operandi is bingo and it has not been a place to see films since the late 1960's. That's a good 40 years plus.
All the old balcony seats are intact and rumour has it that the upper level is haunted. It felt a little like Derek Acora might pop out at any minute when I was up there. A very brilliant yet spooky place indeed.

The airmen here most likely were in a plane that crashed nearby, hence the mix of nationalities including Canadian airmen.

This pub has a rich history. Licensees are known from 1778 although the age of the original building is unknown.
The Northwich Guardian newspaper had offices in the corner portion of the building before it moved to its present premises.
In the 1860's the Crown also functioned as the County Court and Petty Sessions House. Public auctions of real estate were also held here.
In 1966 this public house was one of those permitted an extension of opening hours 'for the accommodation of persons attending the Northwich Public Market'.
The Crown was renamed the Swinging Witch for a few years from 1978 and then the Brasserie Couronne until recently reverting to 'the Crown'.

The company was founded as Wills, Watkins & Co. by Henry Overton Wills I and his partner Watkins, who opened a shop in Castle Street, Bristol in 1786. After the retirement of his partner in 1789 it became Wills & Co..
From 1791 to 1793 the company was known as Lilly, Wills & Co when it merged with the firm of Peter Lilly, who owned a snuff mill on the Land Yeo at Barrow Gurney, and then, from 1793 to his retirement in 1803, as Lilly and Wills. In 1826 his two sons, William Day Wills and Henry Overton Wills took over the company and in 1830 the company took the above name.
The company pioneered canteens for the workers, free medical care, sports facilities and paid holidays. Their first brand was Bristol, made at the London factory from 1871 to 1974. Three Castles and Gold Flake followed in 1878 and Woodbine ten years later. Embassy was introduced in 1914 and relaunched in 1962 with coupons.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Middlewich.
History
A church on the site was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. A later church was built in the 14th century and its chancel was rebuilt in 1680 and again in 1795.[3] The present church dates from 1842 to 1844 when the body of the church was replaced, and the tower and spire were repaired, the architect being Edmund Sharpe of Lancaster. The nave was lengthened by one bay, heightened and widened, and galleries were inserted on three sides. The tower was damaged when it was struck by lightning on 16 July 1850.[3] A new tower was designed by Sharpe and his partner at the time, E. G. Paley. The chancel and transepts date from 1870 by the later partners in the practice, Paley and Austin.

The church is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a five-bay nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry and a south chantry chapel, and a southwest porch. The tower has an octagonal spire with three tiers of lucarnes.
Interior
In the chancel is a two-arched sedilia. The reredos contains an alabaster relief depicting The Last Supper. The monuments in the church include ones to William Tomkinson who died in 1770 by Benjamin Bromfield, to Mrs France who died in 1814 by S. and F. Franceys of Liverpool, to Mrs Harper dated 1833 by Francesco Pozzi of Florence with a relief of a mother and child, and to Frederick and Cecil France-Hayhurst who died in 1915, by Underwood. In the south aisle is a war memorial chapel designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. It contains a reredos with carvings of personifications of virtues, framed by carved friezes, and posts surmounted by angels

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3538129767 - 'Abandoned wooden salt waggon on its original rails. Now showing its age. I arrived seconds before a massive downpour of rain. The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum. The works is situated in Marston, near Northwich surrounded by salt flashes.
The museum failed to secure funding in the restoration TV show in 2004, however In March 2008 it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund had made an award of \u00a34.96m towards the \u00a37m total cost of the restoration project. so we might be seeing it in its former glory soon.
This area was the start of industrial mining of salt and saline processing for the soda ash and other industries that have developed in the area. The site is recognised as an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The pub over the road, The Salt Barge is a nice place to stop for a pint.

The club hails from beginnings in 1890 when first set up by Brunner Mond (adjacent chemical works) for employees development of sports and recreation.
The venue was ideal for gigs staged in the big room. Only surpassed by gigs held at the end of the old Northwich Victoria (Vics) social club with its 8ft roof and low stage.

Burnley's Deponeye formed in 1998 following the renaming of the band from Kain.
Following a series of great supports including Dodgy, Kirk Brandons Spear of Destiny and MoSolid Gold, the bands original members left to pursue oher things leaving Roy &
Micky to bring in drummer Pete Jeffery &
Bassist Alex Harker.
Frequent visitors to teh Banned! gigs in Northwich Deponeye quickly set about making a name for themselves in the industry and finally in 2004 secured two tracks (Anger Management &
Tick Tock) onto one of 2004s biggest selling computer games entitled Flatout sold on the PS2, PC &
XBOX platforms.
The game sent deponeyes profile into the stratosphere and consequently that Xmas contact was made from Revolver Records concerning signing the guys. Unfortunately, before any deal could be made, the band split up in mid 2005.
Roy found himself drawn back into the band lifestyle late 2006 with a new line up and subsequently decided that the name deponeye was to be left behind. Following a series of line up changes, his new band Exit State have continued in the same succesful vein as deponeye.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX4M - The George and Dragon is a public house in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
The inn has three bays and is in two storeys. It is built in brick with a roughcast rendering on the upper storey. The roofs are hipped and covered in clay tiles. The central bay consists of a two-storey porch which projects forwards. Its lower storey has an elliptical-headed doorway, and in the upper storey is a four-light mullioned window. Each lateral bay has a four-light mullioned window in the lower storey and a three-light mullioned window in the upper storey. A tall rubbed brick chimneystack rises from the left side of the roof. Diagonally from the right corner is the inn sign. The cut-out pictorial sign itself originated in Nuremberg while its ornate wrought iron bracket was made by the estate blacksmith. On each side of the porch is an oak post-and-rail fence inscribed with a number of sayings. Above the inner door is a stone containing a verse written by Egerton-Warburton. Internally, in the bar, is a stone inscribed in Latin and the date 1722
