Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64RBA - Lancaster is a city and the county town of Lancashire, England, standing on the River Lune. Its population of 52,234 compares with one of 138,375 in the wider City of Lancaster local government district.
The House of Lancaster was a branch of the English royal family. The Duchy of Lancaster still holds large estates on behalf of Charles III, who is also Duke of Lancaster. Its long history is marked by Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Priory Church, Lancaster Cathedral and the Ashton Memorial. It is the seat of Lancaster University and has a campus of the University of Cumbria. The Port of Lancaster played a big role in the city's growth, but for many years the outport of Glasson Dock has become the main shipping facility.
The name of the city first appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Loncastre, where Lon refers to the River Lune and castre (from the Old English c??ster and Latin castrum for fort) to the Roman fort that stood on the site
Lancaster is mainly a service-oriented city. Products include animal feed, textiles, chemicals, livestock, paper, synthetic fibre, farm machinery, HGV trailers and mineral fibres. In recent years, a high-tech sector has emerged from Information Technology and Communications firms investing in the city.
A permanent military presence was built up with the completion of Bowerham Barracks in 1880. The Phoenix Street drill hall was completed in 1894.
In March 2004, Lancaster was granted Fairtrade City status.
Lancaster was home to the European headquarters of Reebok. After merging with Adidas, Reebok moved to Bolton and Stockport in 2007.
In May 2015 Queen Elizabeth II visited the castle for commemorations for the 750th anniversary of the creation of the Duchy of Lancaster

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JBG - The large central drum is the main carding cylinder, which rotates at speed.
The multiple small pulleys around the side are part of the belt-driven transmission, typical of Lancashire mills using line-shaft power from overhead shafts.
The wooden casing (often polished hardwood) is characteristic of British carding engines, both for protection and to reduce lint escape.
Surrounding rollers and covers would have worked with:
the licker-in (to open raw cotton),
worker and stripper rollers (to disentangle fibres),
and the doffer (to remove the aligned fibre web).
What it did in the cotton process
This machine sat early in the cotton production line:
Raw cotton arrived compressed and dirty
It was opened and cleaned (blow room machinery)
Carding engine aligned the fibres into a continuous web
The web was condensed into sliver, ready for drawing and spinning
Without carding, spinning simply did not work properly.
Why it's so Lancashire
Carding engines were ubiquitous in Lancashire mills (Oldham, Bolton, Blackburn, Burnley, Preston).
British makers such as Platt Brothers of Oldham dominated this machinery worldwide.
The heavy iron castings, belt drives, and polished woodwork are textbook North-West England mill engineering.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRX1 - Milton Keynes Central railway station serves Milton Keynes and surrounding parts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire (England). The station is located on the West Coast Main Line about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of London. The station is served by Avanti West Coast intercity services, and by West Midlands Trains regional services.
This is the principal station for the city, one of seven serving the Milton Keynes urban area. Milton Keynes Central, which opened on 17 May 1982, is by far the busiest and most important of these, as well as being the largest in terms of platforms in use, having overtaken Bletchley when platforms 2A and 6 became operational.
Milton Keynes Central has a total of seven platforms. Platforms 1 and 3 are the south and northbound slow platforms, while 4 and 6 are the south and northbound fast platforms. Platforms 2 and 5 are reversible, being slow and fast respectively. Platform 2 is used mainly by terminating stopping services from London Euston, whilst platforms 1 and 3 are used by West Midlands Trains services between Euston and Northampton, Birmingham New Street or Crewe. Platforms 4, 5 and 6 are used by Avanti West Coast inter-city express services between London and the West Midlands, north Wales, the north-west or Scotland.
Platform 2A is a five-car south-facing bay platform, originally intended for the extension of Marston Vale Line services from Bedford into Milton Keynes Central this proposal no longer appears in plans for East West Rail, being replaced by a planned service to/from Oxford or Aylesbury (see below). Meanwhile, platform 2A is used only by exception when additional platform capacity is needed, such as when there is a service delay. To the north of the station the six lines reduce to four (two slow and two fast) and there is a mile of five-track running to the south before this also reduces back to four.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P043 - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

Design Inspiration
It was at theManchesterMechanics' Institute in 1868 that the first meeting of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) took place in 1868. Fifty years later, in 1918, the Pankhurst's led a victory that was meant to mark the beginning of the end of a war for gender equality. Sylvia Pankhurst, a suffragette, imprisoned numerous times, came to see the struggle for women to have the vote as just one strand in a larger struggle for equality.
Manchester UNISON and UNISON North West
UNISON members work in many different roles in providing public services. It is the union for workers in sectors including local government, the NHS, the police service, education, utilities, transport and the voluntary sector. With 200,000 members it is the biggest union in the region and more than two-thirds of its members are women.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRJ9TG - Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. When it opened, Blackpool Tower was the tallest man made structure in the British Empire. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet (158 metres) tall and is the 125th-tallest freestanding tower in the world. Blackpool Tower is also the common name for the Tower Buildings, an entertainment complex in a red-brick three-storey block that comprises the tower, Tower Circus, the Tower Ballroom, and roof gardens, which was designated a Grade I listed building in 1973.
Background
The Blackpool Tower Company was founded by London-based Standard Contract & Debenture Corporation in 1890
it bought an aquarium on Central Promenade with the intention of building a replica Eiffel Tower on the site. John Bickerstaffe, a former mayor of Blackpool, was asked to become chairman of the new company, and its shares went on sale in July 1891. The Standard Corporation kept 30,000 ?1 shares and offered ?150,000 worth of shares to the public
initially only two-thirds were taken up, forcing the company to ask for more cash contributions from its existing shareholders, but the poor financial situation of the company, exacerbated by the falling share price, rendered it unable to pay. Bickerstaffe, to avoid the potential collapse of the venture, bought any available shares until his original holding of ?500 amounted to ?20,000. He also released the Standard Corporation from its share commitments. When the Tower opened in 1894, its success justified the investment of nearly ?300,000, and the company made a ?30,000 profit in 1896.
Two Lancashire architects, James Maxwell and Charles Tuke, designed the tower and oversaw the laying of its foundation stone on 29 September 1891. By the time the Tower finally opened on 14 May 1894, both men had died. Heenan & Froude, then of Manchester, were appointed structural engineers, supplying and constructing both the tower,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDDPP7 - Warrington Central railway station is one of two main railway stations serving the town of Warrington in the north-west of England. It is located on the southern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Lines (the former Cheshire Lines Committee route between Liverpool and Manchester), being situated approximately halfway between the two cities. Central station is served by diesel stopping trains between Liverpool and Manchester, and diesel express services between Liverpool and Manchester Airport, as well as between Liverpool and East Anglia.
Central station has no electrified lines, being served only by diesel trains.
Main station building faces away from the town and is of a classical style with some polychrome brickwork. Most of it is rented out to small businesses, the booking office and other facilities having been relocated to a modern building at a lower level. From street level, passengers climb six steps or a short ramp to reach the booking office, and climb further steps to the platforms. Disabled passengers can now easily access both platforms as lifts were installed in June 2008, making Warrington Central fully accessible for the first time.
The station has a customer service office, toilets, waiting rooms, a newsagent and a coffee stall. The entrance building was enlarged and modernised in 2010?11.
Outside there is a car park and a taxi rank. The station is located close to Warrington Bus Interchange.
The adjoining Cheshire Lines Warehouse (a listed building) has been redeveloped as apartments, along with six new apartment blocks
Northern Trains operates two through stopping services in each direction from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road. Late evening services operate between Warrington and either Manchester or Liverpool.

Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groove?based anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED8PR4 - Carlisle railway station, also known as Carlisle Citadel station, is a railway station which serves the city of Carlisle, Cumbria, England, and is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, lying 102 miles (164 km) south of Glasgow Central, and 299 miles (481 km) north of London Euston.
It is also the northern terminus of the celebrated Settle and Carlisle Line ? notionally (and historically) a continuation of the Midland Main Line from Leeds, Sheffield and ultimately London St Pancras. It is a Grade II* listed building
The station was built in 1847, in a neo-Tudor style to the designs of William Tite.[2] It was then one of a number of stations in the city - the others were at Crown Street (Maryport & Carlisle Railway) and London Road (Newcastle and Carlisle Railway) - but had become the main one by 1851
it was expanded and extended in 1875-1876, with the arrival of the Midland Railway (who became the seventh different company to serve it).
The Beeching Axe fell with very significant rail closures including the former North British Railway lines to Silloth (closed on 7 September 1964) and Edinburgh via Galashiels (the Waverley Line, closed on 6 January 1969). The axe cut off the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway and Portpatrick Railway in 1965 resulting in an adverse mileage increase via the Glasgow South Western Line to reach Stranraer Harbour and thus Northern Ireland.
The layout has also undergone few changes of any significance other than the singling of the ex-NER Tyne Valley route down to London Road Junction as part of the 1972-3 re-signalling scheme associated with WCML electrification.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB0HPJ - The 1920s style CWS building with stormy sky in Manchester city centre.
From its beginnings in 1863, the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) became one of the largest co-operative organisations in the UK, changing its name in to The Co-operative Group in 2001. The CWS began in small premises in Manchester and grew to occupy a large part of the city centre, which housed its offices, warehouses and salerooms. It produced the famous CWS Brand goods for co-operative societies throughout the UK. These included food, furniture, clothing and household products.
A Co-operative Wholesale Society, or CWS, is a form of Co-operative Federation (that is, a Co-operative in which all the members are Co-operatives), in this case, the members are usually Consumers' Co-operatives.
According to Co-operative economist Charles Gide, the aim of a Co-operative Wholesale Society is to arrange bulk purchases, and, if possible, organise production. In other words, a Co-operative Wholesale Society is a form of Federal Co-operative through which Consumers' Co-operatives can collectively purchase goods at wholesale prices, and in some cases collectively own factories or farms.
CWS flour mill in Silvertown, London, c. 1915
The best historical examples of this are the (English) CWS and the Scottish CWS, which are the predecessors of the 21st century Co-operative Group. Indeed, in Britain, the terms Co-operative Wholesale Society or CWS are used to refer to this specific organisation rather than the organisational form.
However, the English CWS has inspired many imitations around the world (including, for example, the New South Wales Co-operative Wholesale Society who have also described themselves as Co-operative Wholesale Societies or 'CWS'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DGHEPE - Although there may be up to 100 species in the genus, only those native to the Northern hemisphere are commonly called Forget-me-not. Many are popular in gardens, preferring moist habitats. In areas where they are not native, they have frequently escaped to wetlands and riverbanks.
Myosotis sylvatica (wood forget-me-not)
Forget-me-nots may be annual or perennial plants. Their root systems are generally diffuse. Their seeds are found in small, tulip-shaped pods along the stem to the flower. The pods attach to clothing when brushed against and eventually fall off, leaving the small seed within the pod to germinate elsewhere. Seeds can be collected by putting a piece of paper under the stems and shaking the seed pods and some seeds will fall out.
It is possible that the genus originated in the Northern Hemisphere although it is equally possible that evolution occurred in New Zealand. One or two European species, especially the wood forget-me-not, Myosotis sylvatica have been introduced into most of the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Forget-me-nots are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the setaceous Hebrew character.
The Chatham Islands forget-me-not belongs to a related genus, Myosotidium.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKET8 - MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project was developed by Peel Media
its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK on 25 March 2013, followed in two stages by the northern arm of ITV Studios: the second stage involved Coronation Street being moved to a new production facility on Trafford Wharf next to the Imperial War Museum North at the end of 2013. The Studios on Broadway houses seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK tram stop on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of the Broadway Link Road.

Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers (digits).
Ten is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2 and 5. Ten is the smallest noncototient, a number that cannot be expressed as the difference between any integer and the total number of coprimes below it.
Ten is the second discrete semiprime (2.5) and the second member of the (2.q) discrete semiprime family. Ten has an aliquot sum σ(n) of 8 and is accordingly the first discrete semiprime to be in deficit. All subsequent discrete semiprimes are in deficit. The aliquot sequence for 10 comprises five members (10,8,7,1,0) with this number being the second composite member of the 7-aliquot tree.
It is the aliquot sum of only one number the discrete semiprime 14.
Ten is a semi-meandric number.
The Roman numeral for ten is X (which looks like two V's [the Roman numeral for 5] put together)
it is thought that the V for five is derived from an open hand (five digits displayed). Incidentally, the Chinese word numeral for ten, is a cross, too: 十.
There are said to be Ten Lost Tribes of Israel (those other than Judah and Benjamin). There are Ten Sephirot in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Bible records 10 generations between Adam and Noah, and 10 generations between Noah and Abraham.
'Ten' is an album by Y&

Eleven is the first number which cannot be counted with a human's ten fingers. In English, it is the smallest positive integer requiring three syllables and the largest prime number with a single-morpheme name. Its etymology originates from a Germanic compound ainlif meaning 'one left'.
If a number is divisible by 11, reversing its digits will result in another multiple of 11. As long as no two adjacent digits of a number added together exceed 9, then multiplying the number by 11, reversing the digits of the product, and dividing that new number by 11, will yield a number that is the reverse of the original number. (For example: 142,312 x 11 = 1,565,432. 2,345,651 / 11 = 213,241.)
Because it has a reciprocal of unique period length among primes, 11 is the second unique prime. 11 goes into 99 exactly 9 times, so vulgar fractions with 11 in the denominator have two digit repeating sequences in their decimal expansions. Multiples of eleven by one-digit numbers all have matching double digits: 00 (=0), 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. Bob Dorough, in his Schoolhouse Rock song 'The Good Eleven', called them 'Double-digit doogies' (soft g). Eleven is the Aliquot sum of one number, the discrete semiprime 21 and is the base of the 11-aliquot tree.
Eleven is the atomic number of sodium. After Judas Iscariot was disgraced, the remaining apostles of Jesus were sometimes described as 'the Eleven'
this occurred even after Matthias was added to bring the number to twelve, as in Acts 2:14.
Computers of the PDP-11 series from Digital Equipment Corporation were informally referred to as 'elevens'. The number 11 bus is a low-cost way of sightseeing in London. It goes from Liverpool St to Fulham Broadway via the West End.

Gomez are an English indie rock band from Southport, comprising Ian Ball (vocals, guitar), Paul 'Blackie' Blackburn (bass), Tom Gray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitars) and Olly Peacock (drums, synths, computers). The band is distinguished for having three singers and four songwriters, employing traditional and electronic instruments. Their sound is versatile and evades typical music genres falling into blues, indie, alternative, rock, folk, psychedelic and experimental.
Their first album, Bring It On, won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998, giving them much media attention in the UK and throughout the world. Later awards came from the NME and Q Magazine along with a Brit Awards nomination. Bring It On is the debut album that this track comes from.
Gomez entered the recording studios in late 1997 to turn their demos into an album. As well, Gomez toured the UK with Embrace. Their first single '78 Stone Wobble' was released in March 1998 with their debut album Bring It On coming out a month later.
The album received a good critical response from both sides of the Atlantic with Spin calling it a 'damn beautiful album'. Sales in the UK really took off when it won the 1998 Mercury Music Prize for best album beating the favourites Massive Attack's Mezzanine and The Verve's Urban Hymns. 'Get Myself Arrested' and 'Whippin' Piccadilly' were later released as singles.
This bridge links the Canal St area with Piccadilly railway station. Manchester Piccadilly (Manchester London Road until 1960) is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. It serves intercity routes to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, South Wales, the south coast of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow Central, and routes throughout northern England. Two platforms for the Manchester Metrolink light rail network are located in the station's undercroft. Piccadilly is one of 18 British railway stations managed by Network Rail.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in Manchester ahead of Victoria, Deansgate, Salford Central and Oxford Road. It is the fourth busiest station in the United Kingdom outside London,[clarification needed] after Birmingham New Street, Glasgow Central and Leeds. According to Network Rail, which manages it, over 28.5 million people use the station annually.
The station received a five-year £100m refurbishment in 2002, which was the most expensive improvement on the UK rail network at the time. According to an independent poll carried out in 2007, Manchester Piccadilly has the highest customer satisfaction level of any UK station, with 92% of passengers satisfied with the station
the national average was 60%
The station was renamed London Road station in 1847, around the time the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway was formed (later to become the Great Central Railway). The Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJAR) opened its line from Manchester Oxford Road railway station to London Road on 1 August 1849 and built its own platforms adjacent to the main part of the station. These platforms were referred to as the MSJAR or South Junction platforms. During the early 1880s the station was enlarged. The MSJAR platforms and the bridge over Fairfield Street were demolished and an island platform, on girder bridges, opened on 16 May 1882.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5890756904 - 'The road is named after the lost River Dene, which may have flowed along the Hanging Ditch connecting the River Irk to the River Irwell, at the northern end of Deansgate. ('gate' derives from the Norse gata, meaning way).
It begins now at Victoria Street but that street was a 19th-century creation: at the time the east side of Deansgate was occupied by Victoria Buildings (built by Manchester Corporation in 1876 but ruined during a bomb raid in December 1940 during the Second World War) on a triangular site (later a statue of Oliver Cromwell was placed at the northern corner commemorating Manchester's support for Parliament in the English Civil War). The statue was a gift to the city by Mrs. Abel Heywood in memory of her first husband Thomas Goadsby
it was the first large statue of Cromwell to be raised in the open anywhere in England.
At the northern end of Deansgate it becomes Victoria Street, on which lies Manchester Cathedral, and at the southern end is Deansgate railway station. At this point Deansgate connects with Bridgewater Viaduct and Chester Road (Whitworth Street West also meets it at this point). The section to the south of Peter Street was until the end of the 18th century known as Aldport Street (Aldport being the former name of the Castlefield area once separate from medieval Manchester).
The northern end of the street used to adjoin a retail area known as The Shambles. This was badly damaged in the IRA bombing in 1996. The area was eventually redeveloped and is home to several new buildings, including No. 1 Deansgate and the Manchester branch of Harvey Nichols.
Other recent additions to the Deansgate area include the Royal Bank of Scotland building, the Beetham Tower, and the redevelopment of the Great Northern Warehouse. These stand in contrast with historic buildings, such as the John Rylands Library and the Barton Arcade shopping mall. The disused Manchester and Salford Junction canal runs directly underneath Deansgate and below the Great Northern Warehouse.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Art for Art's Sake' is a single from the 'How dare You!' album, by the British Pop/Rock band 10cc. It was released in 1975. The band were Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. They were all played multiple instruments and most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport, England. I used to work about 2 minutes walk away from it. Eric Stewart engineered most releases.
Most of the band were from Manchester and grew up together as kids. They were originally rejected by The Beatles Apple label. Jonathan King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read '10cc The Best Band in the World'.
A widely repeated claim, disputed by King and Godley, but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current lineup, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated by men, thus emphasising their potency or prowess.
The band had a canon of hits in teh mid 1970's. In February 1975 the band announced they had signed with Mercury Records for US$1 million. The catalyst for the deal was one song – 'I'm Not in Love'.
A compilation album 'Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley &
Creme' is a good intro to the band.

The Lowry is a combined theatre and gallery complex situated in Salford Quays, in Salford, England. It is named after the early 20th century painter, L. S. Lowry, known for this paintings of industrial scenes in North West England.
Designed by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold, (Wayfinding System and 'Artworks at the Lowry Gallery' by Reich + Petch) the building was completed in 1999 costing £120 million.
Funding was helped by £21m of National Lottery grant. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and illuminated from the inside at night. It was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.
When I was a lad the dock complex at the Pomona Salford Docks was very run down and a good place to be picked off by a .22 air rifle pellet. Today the showcase Lowry has been joined by The Imperial War Museum North a shopping complex and MediaCityUK. This is a 200 acre complex, whose The main tenant upon initial completion will be the BBC at its new 12,500m² BBC Centre.
When completed, the development will have an unusual feature in that the streets will not bear any names, but will instead be identified by colours alone. The address of the BBC will, for example, be 'Blue'. The BBC have a long history in the city, BBC's very first regional TV studio was also in Manchester – Studio A at Dickenson Road – which it had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. A place where Top of The Pops was originally filmed.
BBC North West will relocate to the site from its current premises in Oxford Road, Manchester.

Pride (In the Name of Love)' is a song by rock band U2. It is the second track on the band's 1984 album, The 'Unforgettable Fire', it was released as the album's lead single in September 1984. The song had been intended to be about Ronald Reagan's pride in America's military power but writer St. Bono had been influenced by Stephen B. Oates's book Let The Trumpet Sound: A Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a biography of Malcolm X. These caused Bono to ponder the different sides of the civil rights campaigns, the violent and the non-violent.
I have an uneasy relationship with U2, I really like the early years up to Zooropa, but then I stuggle. This is one of my favourites however. I hope you enjoy it!

Sir Ian Murray McKellen, CH, CBE (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor from near me in Burnley, living some early years in Wigan. He has received a Tony Award and two Academy Award nominations. His work has spanned genres from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction. He is known to many for roles such as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and as Magneto in the X-Men films.
In 1988, McKellen came out and announced he was gay. He became a founding member of Stonewall, one of the United Kingdom's most influential LGBT rights groups, of which he remains a prominent spokesman. Here he wears a classic Stonewall T-shirt 'Some People Are Gay, Just Get Over It'.
He is pictured here leading the Manchester Pride 2010 carnival parade today 28th August .
The emotional feeling I get when I watch the pride march most years, is a similar one to when I hear this track. From the early 1980's when Manchester's canal street was a seedy no-go area. The area along the canal was perfect for gay men to clandestinely meet as it was dark and unvisited with shuttered pubs such as Napoleons. Manto bar started to buck that trend in 1981.
At the time there was a backdrop of less than equitable policing, led by James Anderton. His appointment as Chief Constable of Greater Manchester was announced on October 23, 1975. Anderton frequently courted public controversy with his outspoken views on policing and morality. As a professed Christian who claimed to speak with the supreme being regularly and who characterised himself to be an instrument of divine judgement.
Anderton came to be known as 'God's copper'. This led to the press and the public questioning his mental health and capability to perform his job appropriately. He was often in conflict with the city's political leadership during the 1980s, especially over his views on homosexuality and AIDS: he declared that homosexuality should be illegal, and he referred to homosexuals and those with AIDS as 'swirling in a cesspit of their own making'.
The Happy Mondays song 'God's Cop' criticizes James Anderton (for example, 'God makes it easy/God makes is easy on me'). The John Cooper Clarke track 'Chicken Town' is also a mancunian parable on those dark days.
I for one are glad those are now behind us. We have the tolerance and freedoms that help us respect each other, regardless of sexuality, race, religion. We should all be truly thankful (amen).

One of Birmingham's best, Judas Priest often I feel get the raw end of the stick when compared in heavy metal terms to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Metalica &
Kiss. dating back to 1968, the band consist of founder vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton, KK. Downing, and bassist Ian Hill. Drummers have come and gone over the years. They have sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
I saw them two nights running at the Manchester Apollo in 1980 or 1981, supported probably by Budgie or Magnum. On one of the nights Halford came on with his big motorbike on stage and it toppled over on to him. It didn't affect the show however, it was still a cracking gig.
Judas Priest are also known for being revolutionaries in heavy metal fashion. Rob Halford thus began incorporating a macho image of what today is known as hardcore metal/biker/S&
M style into his look as early as 1978 (to coincide with the release of their album Killing Machine), and the rest of the band followed. The look was apparently sourced from S&
M boutiques that Halford visited while on tour.
It became a mainstay in heavy metal
soon, several other bands, particularly of the NWOBHM and early black metal movements, began incorporating Halford's fashion into their look as well. This sparked a revival in metal in the early '80s, and catapulted them to fame, in both the mainstream and underground. Even in the present, it is not uncommon to find metal artists sporting such a look at concerts.
In 1998, Halford came out as gay publicly on an interview with MTV News.

This shot was taken at the showery Manchester Pride 2010.
The first 'gay pride' event in Manchester was held in 1990. EuroPride was hosted in Manchester in 2003, and Since 2004 the title 'Manchester Pride' has been adopted. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, which centres around Canal Street, each year. The event comprises a Pride march, and several days of various arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as a festival during the August bank holiday weekend within the gay village itself.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4653594686 - 'This is an image taken in the first floor historic reading room of the Manchester University John Rylands library. This serves as the special Collections section of the John Rylands University Library (JRUL). It is a remarkable victorian gothic building right in the heart of the city's shopping district Deansgate.
The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands. The collections include medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing, including the Gutenberg Bible, and the personal papers of notable local figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and chemist John Dalton.
Enriqueta Rylands purchased a site on Deansgate, at the heart of Manchester city centre, in 1889 for her planned memorial library and commissioned a design from architect Basil Champneys. Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, which is a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church, although the actual concept was of an Oxford college library on a larger scale.
The core of the library was formed around the collection of 40,000 books including many rarities assembled by George John Spencer, which Mrs Rylands purchased in 1892. The library was finally opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It was illuminated internally by electricity (rather than gas which was more common at the time). The use of electricity was still in its early stages, the supply had to be generated on-site. This took some years to achieve due to the inexperience of local contractors, but the library became one of the first public buildings in Manchester to be lit by electricity and continued to generate its own supply until 1950.
Basil Champneys was given the rare honour of speaking about the building at a general meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1912. The library was granted listed building status on 25 January 1952, which was upgraded to Grade I on 6 June 1994.
In the Rylands Gallery on the lower floor, you can see some of the most important items from the Library's collections including magnificent medieval manuscripts and examples of the earliest books ever printed. The gallery is organized around seven themes. Faiths, History of the Bible, Beautiful Books, Science, World Literatures, Everyday Life and Manchester.
It is one of Manchester's building gems and inside more resembles a cathedral than a library. Marble statues of Enriqueta and John Rylands watch over the readers from either end of the room. If you are in the city, make an excuse to spend some time to drink in the history.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1988.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist UNESCO attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London

This music you may remember from BBC Saturday Sport was composed by MES (Mark E Smith) and The Fall. To get a feel for the show, check this out. Unfortunately, his beloved Man City had managed a 'Hopeless as usual performance' in their 0-0 draw against Blackburn.
The Fall are an English post-punk group, formed in Prestwich, Greater Manchester in 1976. The group has existed in some form ever since, and is essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. First associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years.
However, The Fall's music is often characterised by repetition, an abrasive guitar-driven sound, and is always underpinned by Smith's vocals and often cryptic lyrics, described by critic Steve Huey as 'abstract poetry filled with complicated wordplay, bone-dry wit, cutting social observations, and general misanthropy (sometimes more implied than clearly stated, but apparent nonetheless).'
The group's output is prolific. As of September 2010 they have released 28 studio albums, and more than triple that counting live albums and other releases. They have never achieved widespread public success beyond a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but have maintained a strong cult following. The band were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and cited The Fall as his favourite band, famously explaining, 'They are always different, they are always the same.'. The Fall were the only band who merited a seperate section in John Peel's record collection.
MES does manage the band like a football team, bringing in new talent and mavericks (many he encounters in the pub in Prestwich) acting as foreman. Dave Simpson's book 'The Fallen' is a great guide to the world of The Fall.
The last time I saw them was in Liverpool 2008 when MES had just turned 50. The band's Peel sessions were finally released recently by Castle Records in the six-CD box 'The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004'. This is a good starting point for getting to know the varied music of the band. The lastest album 'Your Future, Our Clutter' is also worth a listen to wet your appetite. Tell 'em I sent you.....

Forming a soundtrack to much of my 1980's, 'The The' are an English musical and multimedia group that have been active in various forms since 1979, with singer/songwriter Matt Johnson being the only constant band member.
In 1993, the five-piece line-up issued the album Dusk containing this single. It debuted at no 2 in the UK and spun off three Top 40 singles in the UK, led by 'Dogs of Lust'. A world tour followed, the Lonely Planet tour, at which point the band's line-up was reshuffled
Johnny Marr and James Eller left, and were replaced by Atlanta based guitarist Keith Joyner and New York bassist Jared Nickerson, respectively.
Also added was Boston harmonica player Jim Fitting, who auditioned in New York in early 1993. The version of their hit 'This Is The Day' featuring Jim Fitting was often dubbed 'That Was The Day'. Palmer bowed out partway through the tour and was replaced by ex Stabbing Westward drummer Andy Kubiszewski.
A full length film, directed by long time collaborator Tim Pope, was made for this album. From Dusk Til Dawn was shot in New Orleans and New York and along with Johnson and Johnny Marr also featured various characters from the New York underground scene such as sexologist Annie Sprinkle, writer and raconteur Quentin Crisp, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, and porn star Rick Savage amongst many other carnival characters.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3356735418 - 'Manchester musician Howard Devoto, ex Buzzcocks, ex Magazine and ex Luxuria (et Noko ). Here shown at the UK reunion tour 2009.
Howard Devoto was born Howard Trafford 15/03/1952 in Scunthorpe. He began his career as the front man for the Manchester punk band Buzzcocks. He left early on to form Magazine, one of the first post-punk bands and who influenced the whole post 1977 scene. After Magazine, he went solo. After Magazine split in 1981 Devoto spent two years putting together a solo album with former Magazine keyboard player Dave Formula (the guy who precipitated the 2009 reunion). Though reception of Jerky Versions of the Dream was mixed, the single 'Rainy Season' was consistently picked as a stand-out track. Later, formed indie band Luxuria with Noko.
For most of the 1990s, Devoto was little involved in music, earning his living by working for a photo agency.
In 2001, Devoto teamed up for the first time in twenty-five years with Buzzcocks Pete Shelley and released the much-anticipated Buzzkunst under the name ShelleyDevoto.
In 2002, Devoto had a small part in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a film about Manchester's Factory Records. In his brief cameo appearance, Devoto appears as a janitor cleaning a men's toilet while actor Martin Hancock (who bears no major resemblance to Devoto) portrays Devoto having a tryst with the wife of promoter/journalist Tony Wilson. The real-life Devoto breaks the fourth wall by addressing the camera and stating in dead pan, 'I definitely don't remember this happening'.
In February 2009 Magazine reformed as shown, with former Luxuria guitarist Noko replacing the deceased John McGeoch on guitar.
On July 9, 2009, Devoto was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton for his contribution to music.

Streets like a jungle......
'Boys and girls' was the lead single from the 'Park Life' album. It was Blur's first top 5 UK hit and most successful single until 'Country House' reached number 1 the following year. The single was seen as a comeback for the band, who had had a lean commercial period for a couple of years. The song surpassed the band's previous commercial peak 'There's No Other Way' by three spots on the UK Singles Chart.
The video, directed by 10cc's Kevin Godley, featured Blur performing the song against a bluescreen backdrop of documentary footage people on 18-30 package holidays. Godley branded the video as 'Page 3 rubbish' while Blur found it 'perfect'. The front cover of the single was taken from a pack of Durex condoms.
In 1994, the song was named single of the year by NME and Melody Maker in the UK. It was also nominated for best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Everyone should own at least one Blur album, my choice would be the 'Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur'. Track it down, tell 'em I sent you.

Manchester has a wealth of LGBT culture and activities. The sitcom drama 'Queer as folk' was set in the Canal St area of the city. 20th century broadcaster and social commentator Brian Redhead once said 'Manchester ... is the capital, in every sense, of the North of England, where the modern world was born. The people know their geography is without equal. Their history is their response to it'. Whilst Ian Brown of the Stone Roses has previously said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach' (er.. top man, bob-on!).
Manchester has claimed to have the UK's largest gay population outside of London. Gay Village, centred on the Canal Street area, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. On the last weekend in August it hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention on television series Queer as Folk and Coronation Street. It is also the birthplace of several gay rights organisations including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Queer Youth Alliance, The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation.
Manchester has its own gay sports teams, Village Manchester FC (soccer), Northern Wave (swimming) and Village Spartans (Rugby) which take part in Manchester's annual Pride Games. In the 1990s Manchester City Council gave support to the establishment of a gay centre and employed four lesbians and gay men to help implement their equal opportunity policy. Their work continued in spite of Section 28 and the City Council actively supported the Mardi Gras and other gay events.
The year round gay and lesbian heritage trail exhibits Manchester's gay history. In 2003, Manchester played host city to the annual Europride festival. The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation, Britain's biggest gay charity, is based on Richmond Street in the city centre. Manchester Metropolitan University has been named the most gay friendly university in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R8T9G4 - Passengers at Crewe station now have access to a new waiting room, specifically designed to offer those with hidden disabilities a safe and calm environment.
The Calm Corner is the first of its kind on the rail network. It features the use of grey and green colours in order to give a calming effect, a living wall and plants to complement the colour scheme, specially designed furniture for comfort and relaxation, a child's play table, LED rope lighting that can change brightness to suit all.
It also has screens with old images of Crewe station and town centre to help trigger memories for those suffering from dementia and has a rail point Totem offering helpful advice (EG train and station layout).
It was brought to life through the work of train operators at the station, Network Rail and advice from a number of partner charities.
The idea was first suggested by work experience student, Megan Hughes, who used her own experience of living with Aspergers Syndrome as inspiration for the project.
Passengers using the waiting room can have access to the same support and passenger information they would get elsewhere on the station. However, it will be with the addition of a special totem screen, offering helpful advice such as train times, onward travel information and station layout.
Through ongoing work with Alzheimer's Society, London Northwestern Railway is committed to improving the experience for passengers living with dementia, to help support independent living through the use of the rail network.
The train operator is now working on initiatives to improve staff training as well as implementing small changes at stations that will make a big difference to the experience for passengers.
The ?memory corner' has been designed to help trigger memories for those who have used Crewe station for many years using a collection of historic photos of the station.
It is hoped this collection can grow, with contributions from passengers, families and other supporters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF77W - The Verve was an English rock band formed in Wigan, Greater Manchester in August 1990 by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Guitarist and keyboard player Simon Tong later became a member in their first reunion only.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound with their debut LP A Storm in Heaven, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and four albums. They also endured name and line-up changes, break-ups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK history. It features the hit singles Bitter Sweet Symphony, The Drugs Don't Work, Sonnet and Lucky Man. In 1998, the band won two Brit Awards, winning Best British Group, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in March, and in February 1999, Bitter Sweet Symphony was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
Soon after their commercial peak, The Verve disbanded in April 1999, citing internal conflicts. According to Billboard magazine.
On 24 May 1998, The Verve played a homecoming concert in front of 33,000 fans in the grounds of Haigh Hall & Country Park, Aspull, supported by Beck and John Martyn. The band then played gigs in mainland Europe, but, on 7 June, a post-show fight at D?sseldorf-Philipshalle left McCabe with a broken hand and Ashcroft with a sore jaw. After this, McCabe decided he could not tolerate the pressures of life on the road any longer and pulled out of the tour, leaving the band's future in jeopardy, with rumours of a split circulating in the press. The band continued with session musician B. J. Cole replacing McCabe, whose guitar work was also sampled and triggered on stage.
