Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97HX - A tight, documentary close-up of a blue civic plaque mounted on a red brick wall at Stockport railway station in Greater Manchester. The plaque headline reads CHANNEL ISLAND EVACUEES and the main inscription is fully legible, explaining that in June, July and August 1940 Stockport welcomed over 1200 evacuees from the Channel Islands, and that the children were cared for by local families until the islands were liberated in May 1945. Around the lower edge, the wording THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOCKPORT and a small municipal crest reinforce the official, local-government nature of the marker, giving the image strong value for accurate editorial captioning and search visibility.
The composition is simple and direct, designed to prioritise the readable text and the classic blue-plaque format. The brickwork texture and the slightly weathered surface add a sense of permanence and everyday realism, suggesting a plaque that has become part of the station environment rather than a staged memorial. Light appears cool and natural, consistent with winter or cold-season conditions, with no strong shadows, so the plaque reads clearly and evenly.
As a stock image, it works well for editorial uses around World War II remembrance, wartime evacuation, refugees and displacement, and the social history of communities taking in children and families during conflict. It is also useful for education, heritage, and local history storytelling, especially where an image is needed to represent Channel Islands evacuation history in mainland Britain. The station setting is significant, since rail travel was central to evacuation journeys and arrivals, and the plaque serves as a quiet reminder of how major wartime events intersected with ordinary civic places

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97PF - A documentary, upward-angled view of the restored Winter's building on Stockport's Underbank, photographed to emphasise the famous exterior clock feature and its theatrical elements. The composition captures the projecting clock face with clear WINTER'S branding, flanked by decorative niches and traditional bell fittings that hint at the building's mechanical showmanship. The fa??ade is presented as an urban landmark rather than a generic shopfront, with crisp lines, clean masonry, and a bright blue sky giving the scene a cold-season clarity typical of winter daylight in Greater Manchester.
Winter's is widely known locally for its unique automaton clock, featuring three character figures, a soldier, a sailor and Father Time, that chime the time with bells mounted above the display. The clock was installed to advertise Jacob Winter's jewellers and clockmaking business and has become a much-loved piece of Stockport street heritage, the kind of place where generations stop, look up, and wait for the moment the figures move. The visual language of the scene supports that story: decorative niches, bell housings, and bold clock graphics that turn a working building into a piece of public theatre.
The building has also played several roles over time, including use as a pub and later restoration as part of the wider Underbanks heritage programme, so the image can carry multiple editorial angles: local history, conservation, town centre regeneration, and the re-use of historic buildings for contemporary leisure and hospitality. It is especially useful as a recognisable Stockport identifier because the clock branding and distinctive fa??ade details do the work of place recognition without needing crowds or close portrait detail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM981K - A documentary, street-level view of the Arden Arms on Millgate in Stockport, photographed to emphasise the pub's traditional branding and heritage character. The image centres on the exterior signage: a prominent hanging sign reading ARDEN ARMS and a matching illuminated box sign mounted on the brick fa??ade, both designed for high visibility to pedestrians and passing traffic. The red brickwork, period proportions, and tidy frontage details suggest a long-established town-centre pub, with hanging flower baskets adding a softer, welcoming touch against the harder urban materials.
Seasonal cues come through in the crisp light and the trees visible beyond the building, which show late-season colour and bare branches typical of late autumn or winter. The sky is clear and bright, producing clean edges and strong contrast on the brickwork and sign frames, and giving the scene that cold-weather clarity you often get on a dry day in Greater Manchester. The composition works well as a clear location identifier because the pub name is readable and the building is photographed in a recognisable, matter-of-fact documentary style rather than as a staged hospitality interior.
Editorially, the photo is useful for stories about British pub culture, real ale and cask beer, independent hospitality, and the survival of historic pubs in modern high streets. The Arden Arms is also a listed heritage asset in Stockport, so the image can support coverage about local history, conservation, and traditional buildings still in everyday commercial use. It is equally suitable for travel and lifestyle pieces on Stockport town centre, pub trails, and authentic Northern England streetscapes where pubs remain part of the social fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWWK - The Jeanie Johnston, a full-scale replica of a nineteenth-century emigrant ship, is moored on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin. The vessel commemorates the original Jeanie Johnston, which made multiple transatlantic voyages during the Irish Great Famine, carrying thousands of emigrants from Ireland to North America without loss of life.
With its tall masts, rigging and traditional wooden hull, the ship forms a striking feature of the Dublin Docklands waterfront, contrasting historic maritime design with the modern office and residential developments of the IFSC and surrounding quays. The replica operates as a floating museum and educational attraction, offering insight into Ireland's history of emigration and the experiences of famine-era passengers.
Situated along one of Dublin's busiest riverside routes, the Jeanie Johnston has become a recognised landmark and symbol of Irish resilience, memory and diaspora, frequently used to illustrate themes of migration, heritage, maritime history and national identity in Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXE7 - This image shows a close up view of a cast iron inscription reading Castlefield, formed into a metal surface that has developed a rich rusted patina over time. The lettering is characteristic of Victorian industrial typography, designed to be both durable and legible within the heavy engineering environments that once defined this part of Manchester.
Castlefield is widely recognised as one of the most historically significant industrial areas in the city, closely associated with canals, railways, warehouses, and early transport infrastructure that supported Manchester's growth during the industrial revolution. Cast iron was a defining material of this period, used extensively for bridges, viaducts, columns, and signage because of its strength, mouldability, and relative affordability.
The surface corrosion visible in the image reflects decades of exposure to weather and urban conditions, creating a textured finish that is now valued as part of the area's historic character. Rather than being removed, such patina is often retained in conservation and regeneration projects, where material ageing is seen as evidence of authenticity and continuity.
Taken in natural daylight, the photograph functions both as a documentary record of industrial heritage and as a strong abstract study of texture, lettering, and material decay. It illustrates how small details within Manchester's historic infrastructure help tell the wider story of the city's industrial past and its ongoing relationship with conservation, regeneration, and place identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2W - Directional signage for the Trans Pennine Trail photographed in the Latchford area of south Warrington, Cheshire, England. The blue wayfinding signs indicate west and east routes along the long-distance trail and display symbols for both cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the shared-use nature of the path. The Trans Pennine Trail is a major national route stretching coast to coast across northern England, designed to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable travel through a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.
In towns such as Warrington, the trail forms part of local active-travel infrastructure, connecting residential neighbourhoods with green corridors, waterways, employment areas, and nearby towns. The signage reflects consistent national trail branding and supports navigation for leisure users as well as commuters. The image illustrates broader themes of sustainable transport, public investment in cycling and walking infrastructure, and the integration of long-distance recreational routes into everyday urban environments across contemporary Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5T1 - This image shows a Silverstone Formula One Medical Response Unit vehicle parked adjacent to pedestrian access routes during a British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire. The clearly marked medical response car forms part of the extensive safety and emergency planning required to manage one of the UK's largest annual sporting events.
Formula One race weekends at Silverstone attract very large crowds over several days, placing significant emphasis on spectator welfare, rapid emergency response, and effective crowd management. Dedicated medical vehicles and trained response teams are strategically positioned around the circuit to ensure fast access to both trackside incidents and public areas used by fans.
The photograph captures spectators walking past the medical unit under clear summer skies, reinforcing the visible presence of safety infrastructure within the wider event environment. Temporary fencing, controlled access routes, and speed restriction signage illustrate the layered approach to risk management that underpins large-scale motorsport events.
Beyond the racing itself, the image highlights the operational realities of hosting international sporting events, where emergency preparedness, duty of care, and public safety are as critical as sporting spectacle. It is well suited for editorial use covering motorsport safety, event management, emergency services, and crowd protection at major UK sporting venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9J0BM - William Mulholland (September 11, 1855 ? July 22, 1935) was an Irish American self-taught civil engineer who was responsible for building the infrastructure to provide a water supply that allowed Los Angeles to grow into the largest city in California. As the head of a predecessor to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Mulholland designed and supervised the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, a 233-mile-long (375 km) system to move water from Owens Valley to the San Fernando Valley. The creation and operation of the aqueduct led to the disputes known as the California Water Wars. In March 1928, Mulholland's career came to an end when the St. Francis Dam failed just over 12 hours after he and his assistant gave it a safety inspection.
William Mulholland was born in Belfast, Ireland, part of the United Kingdom. His parents Hugh and Ellen Mulholland were Dubliners and they returned to the city a few years after William's birth. His younger brother, Hugh Jr., was born in 1856. At the time of Mulholland's birth, his father was working as a guard for the Royal Mail. In 1862, when William was seven years old, his mother died. Three years later his father remarried. William was educated at O'Connell School by the Christian Brothers in Dublin. After having been beaten by his father for receiving bad marks in school, Mulholland ran off to sea
Mulholland envisioned Los Angeles growing much larger. The limiting factor to the growth of Los Angeles was its water supply, because it has a semi-arid climate with unreliable rainfall. If you don't get the water, you won't need it, Mulholland famously remarked.
Mulholland shared the vision of a much larger Los Angeles with Frederick Eaton, the mayor of Los Angeles from 1898 through 1900. They both worked together in the private Los Angeles Water Company in the 1880s. Eaton and Mulholland realized that the large amount of runoff from the Sierra Nevada in Owens Valley could be delivered to Los Angeles through gravity

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ348 - A metal sculpture of Charlie Chaplin stands beside the SS Nomadic in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The artwork is located close to Titanic Belfast on Olympic Way, postcode BT3 9EP, within the regenerated docklands area that once formed part of the Harland and Wolff shipyard.
The statue depicts Charlie Chaplin in his iconic Little Tramp persona, complete with bowler hat and cane, rendered in cut steel with a weathered finish. Chaplin, one of the most influential figures in early cinema, symbolises the global cultural impact of silent film and twentieth-century popular entertainment.
The SS Nomadic, moored nearby, is the last remaining White Star Line ship and served as a tender to RMS Titanic, transporting passengers to and from the liner in Cherbourg. The proximity of the sculpture to the historic vessel highlights the Titanic Quarter's blend of maritime heritage, public art, and contemporary cultural tourism.
Photographed outdoors in daylight, with cobbled dock surfaces and harbour features visible, the image documents the reuse of historic docklands as a visitor destination. It is suitable for editorial use relating to film history, public art, tourism in Northern Ireland, maritime heritage, and the ongoing regeneration of Belfast's waterfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP32N - The exterior of the Coleraine Masonic Lodge, also known as the Masonic Hall, in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The symmetrical, classically influenced building features a central entrance with a pediment and prominent Masonic symbolism, including the square and compasses emblem and a circular crest set high on the facade.
Above the entrance is the Latin motto Audi Vide Tace, meaning Hear, See, Be Silent, a phrase traditionally associated with Freemasonry and reflecting values of discretion, observation, and reflection. The architecture and iconography identify the building as a meeting place for members of the Masonic fraternity, which has had a long presence in Northern Ireland's social and civic life.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents a historic fraternal organisation's physical presence within Coleraine's urban landscape. It provides a visual record of institutional architecture, symbolic tradition, and local heritage, illustrating how Masonic lodges have functioned as enduring civic landmarks within towns across the UK and Ireland.

The purpose-built station features distinctive red appliance bay doors and provides an operational base for fire engines and emergency response crews serving Coleraine and the surrounding Causeway Coast area.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service is responsible for fire prevention, firefighting, road traffic collision response, and a range of community safety activities across Northern Ireland. Local stations such as Coleraine play a key role in delivering rapid emergency response, public reassurance, and resilience within their communities.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents everyday emergency-service infrastructure within a Northern Irish town, illustrating the physical presence of public safety services and the built environment that supports frontline response. It is suitable for use in news reporting, public-sector communications, and educational material relating to emergency services and civic provision.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP368 - This image shows a richly coloured stained glass heraldic panel inside Coleraine Town Hall, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The central shield bears crossed symbols and decorative floral motifs, surmounted by the Red Hand of Ulster, one of the most recognisable and historically significant emblems of the province of Ulster.
The banner text reading Newton Governor references civic or administrative authority connected with Coleraine's historical governance, reflecting the town's importance as a regional centre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Surrounding the shield are elaborate decorative elements typical of Victorian and Edwardian stained glass, including scrollwork, symbolic objects, and vibrant blue, gold, and green glass.
Stained glass such as this was commonly installed in municipal buildings to express civic pride, authority, and continuity, combining local identity with broader Ulster and British heraldic traditions. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to Northern Irish history, heraldry, civic architecture, stained glass art, and local government heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T0DAF1 - Dame Gracie Fields DBE OStJ (born Grace Stansfield
9 January 1898 ? 27 September 1979) was an English actress, singer, comedian and star of cinema and music hall who was one of the top ten film stars in Britain during the 1930s and was considered the highest paid film star in the world in 1937. She was known affectionately as Our Gracie and the Lancashire Lass and for never losing her strong, native Lancashire accent. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and an Officer of the Venerable Order of St John (OStJ) in 1938, and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1979.
Fields was born Grace Stansfield, a daughter of Frederick Stansfield (1874?1956) and his wife Sarah Jane 'Jenny' Stansfield n??e Bamford (1879?1953), over a fish and chip shop owned by her grandmother, Sarah Bamford, in Molesworth Street, Rochdale, Lancashire. Her great-grandfather, William Stansfield (b.1805), of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, was a descendant of the Stansfield family of Stansfield, Yorkshire
In 1939, Fields suffered a breakdown and went to Capri to recuperate. World War II was declared while she was recovering in Capri, and Fields ? still very ill after her cancer surgery ? threw herself into her work and signed up for the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) headed by her old film producer, Basil Dean. Fields travelled to France to entertain the troops in the midst of air-raids, performing on the backs of open lorries and in war-torn areas. During the war, she also paid for all servicemen and women to travel free on public transport within the boundaries of Rochdale
She continued to spend much of her time entertaining troops and otherwise supporting the war effort outside Britain
On 3 October 2009, the final train to run on the Oldham Loop before it closed to be converted to a tramway, a Class 156, was named in her honour. In September 2016, a statue of Fields was unveiled outside Rochdale Town Hall

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A41N - This photograph shows a section of Highgate Cemetery in North London, featuring a variety of Victorian grave markers and memorial headstones set among dense greenery. The graves range in style and age, with upright headstones, carved stone monuments, and crosses visible across the sloping, wooded landscape.
Highgate Cemetery is internationally recognised for its historic significance, atmospheric setting, and rich collection of nineteenth-century funerary art. Opened in 1839, it reflects Victorian attitudes to death, remembrance, religion, and social status, while its semi-wild management allows vegetation to grow freely around many memorials.
The presence of wild plants, shrubs, and mature trees softens the stonework and creates a distinctive balance between commemoration and nature. This interaction between human memory and natural growth has become one of Highgate Cemetery's defining characteristics, contributing to its romantic and slightly gothic reputation.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image captures the quiet, reflective atmosphere of the cemetery and its role as both a place of remembrance and a significant heritage landscape within London. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating Victorian burial practices, historic cemeteries, London heritage, and themes of mortality, memory, and time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWW8 - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.
Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.
The company, which employs around 50 members of staff, was founded in 1992 and has become a tourist hotspot bringing a significant amount of footfall to the town.
One local business owner told the Stray Ferret people are worried about a potential loss of income for their own businesses if the brewery doesn't survive.
Tim Ledbetter, owner of Bentley's of Masham, said:
With it being such a big employer, there is then a big knock-on effect.
We get a lot of trade from visitors of Black Sheep ? it could be detrimental.
The brewery reported turnover of ?14.3 million as of March 31, 2022, according to its most recent accounts. However, it also stated a pre-tax loss of ?1.18 million, compared to ?862,871 profit in the previous year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M5M - Currys (branded as Currys PC World between 2010 and 2021) is an electrical retailer and aftercare service provider operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland, specialising in white goods, consumer electronics, computers and mobile phones.
Established as a bicycle retailer in 1927, Currys expanded the range of goods sold and from the 1960s became a major retailer of household electrical items. In 1984 the company was bought by rival retailer Dixons, and the Currys brand was used for all outlets of the combined company. From 2008, the business turned away from shops in town centres to larger out-of-town stores under the Currys PC World brand, combining the operations of Currys with Dixon's PC World under one roof
after the formation of Dixons Carphone in 2014, the stores gained Carphone Warehouse departments. It was announced in July 2021 that all Currys PC World stores would be rebranded to Currys.
Dixons Retail began a trial combining Currys and PC World shops in 2008. During the Dixons Carphone Christmas 2015?2016 results update to shareholders, Sebastian James, group chief executive, revealed that over the following financial year the three-in-one shop format (shops featuring Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse branding under one roof) would be rolled out across the company's entire portfolio in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Following reorganisations in 2020 and 2021, Dixons Carphone announced that the Currys PC World stores would be rebranded to Currys in October 2021

Headquartered in the Qatar Airways Tower in Doha, the airline operates a hub-and-spoke network, using a fleet of more than 200 aircraft. Qatar Airways Group employs more than 43,000 people. The carrier has been a member of the Oneworld alliance since October 2013, the first Persian Gulf carrier to sign with one of the three major airline alliances.
The State of Qatar was a joint-owner member of Gulf Air along with Oman, The UAE (only the Emirate of Abu Dhabi), and Kingdom of Bahrain, until May 2002, following its withdrawal. It became the first country among the three to withdraw from the Airline to solely focus on its own airline Qatar Airways, although it remained a member of the airline for six months after the government announced its complete withdrawal.

Qatar Airways was established by the government of Qatar on November 22, 1993
operations started on January 20, 1994
The Qatar Airways Group ?which included Qatar Airways, Doha International Airport and corporate business air services, ground handling and in-flight catering companies? reported its first profit ever for the fiscal year (FY) that ended on March 2004
In 2013, The Economist claimed that a perusal of online forums used by cabin crew suggests that Qatar has a reputation for severity among industry professionals, including allegations of harsh treatment and overbearing scrutiny are commonplace, and that the conditions laid down by Qatar Airways go beyond more familiar rules ... the employee can be fired if she becomes pregnant (which she is contractually obliged to disclose 'from the date of her knowledge of its occurrence'). Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGPE4T - TransPennine Express (TPE), legally First TransPennine Express Limited, is a British train operating company owned by FirstGroup that operates the TransPennine Express franchise. It runs regional and inter-city rail services between the major cities and towns of Northern England and Scotland.
The franchise operates almost all its services to and through Manchester covering three main routes. The service provides rail links for major towns and cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. TPE run trains 24 hours a day, including through New Year's Eve night. TPE trains run between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport at least every three hours every night of the week. The franchise operates across the West Coast Main Line, Huddersfield Line, East Coast Main Line and part of the Tees Valley line.
TransPennine Express was one of several train operators impacted by the 2022 United Kingdom railway strike, which was the first national rail strike in the UK for three decades. Its workers were amongst those who participated in industrial action due to a dispute over pay and working conditions
On 26/01/2023, the boss of under-fire train company Transpennine Express has apologised to passengers and admitted services have not been good enough.
Transpennine, which operates across the North of England and into Scotland, has been cancelling trains on a daily basis for months, disrupting many journeys.
Calls have been made for the company to lose its contract for the service.
Matthew Golton, managing director of Transpennine, told the BBC the operator had a recovery plan to do better.
The government has previously said action will be taken if the company can't be turned round.
Asked about Transpennine cancelling 40% of its services last week, Mr Golton said: It isn't good enough.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4P - This image shows The Kings Arms, a well-known traditional public house located beside the River Ouse in the historic centre of York. The pub is a familiar landmark on King's Staith and is popular with both residents and visitors, particularly during warm summer weather when outdoor seating is in use.
The Kings Arms occupies a characterful historic building and is closely associated with riverside life in York. Its proximity to the river means it is also known for periodic flooding, an issue that has become part of its local identity and media profile over the years.
In this scene, people are gathered outside the pub enjoying drinks and conversation under clear blue skies, reflecting the social role of English pubs as informal community meeting places. The visible pub sign reinforces its identity as a long-established and recognisable venue within the city.
With York's historic riverside architecture and pedestrian activity in the background, the image captures everyday leisure and tourism in one of England's most visited historic cities. It is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, urban leisure, tourism, riverside life, and summer social scenes in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3JX5R - John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England, produces beers including John Smith's, the highest selling bitter in the United Kingdom since the mid-1990s.
The majority of John Smith's sales are of the nitrogenated Extra Smooth product, although a cask conditioned variant is available nationally. A stronger variant called Magnet is also available in the North East of England. John Smith's Cask and Magnet are produced under licence by Cameron's in Hartlepool.
John Smith acquired the Backhouse & Hartley brewery in 1852. Following a series of acquisitions in the post-World War II period, the company became one of the largest regional brewers in the country, operating over 1,800 licensed premises. The company was taken over by Courage in 1970 who extended distribution of the brewery's products into the South of England. Courage was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle in 1995, and the operations were purchased by Heineken in 2008.
John Smith's Extra Smooth and Original are produced at the Tadcaster brewery, as well as a range of Heineken products including Amstel and Kronenbourg 1664. With a 38 million litre capacity, the brewery is one of the largest in the country.
John Smith's became well known for a series of highly successful No Nonsense-themed television advertising campaigns, featuring the dour Yorkshireman character Arkwright during the 1970s and 1980s
The brewery brews 3.8 million hectolitres annually (1.3 million of which is John Smith's beer), and employed around 300 people in 2008. It has two keg lines, two bottle lines and one canning line. It currently brews and packages the ale brands John Smith's Original, John Smith's Extra Smooth and Newcastle Brown Ale, and the lager brands Foster's, Kronenbourg 1664 (Kronenbourg is a Carlsberg-owned brand brewed under license by Heineken in the UK), Amstel and Tiger

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD23R8 - Filey is a seaside town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is located between Scarborough and Bridlington on Filey Bay. Although it was a fishing village, it has a large beach and became a popular tourist resort. According to the 2011 UK census, Filey parish had a population of 6,981, in comparison to the 2001 UK census population figure of 6,819, and a population of 6,870 in 1991.
Filey was historically mainly within the East Riding of Yorkshire, although until 1888 a small part of the town, including its parish church, was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the town was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire.
Filey is at the eastern end of the Cleveland Way, a long-distance footpath
it starts at Helmsley and skirts the North York Moors. It was the second National Trail to be opened (1969). The town is at the northern end of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail which starts at Hessle and crosses the Yorkshire Wolds. Filey is the finishing point for Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. The 70-mile (110 km) ride begins at Wetherby Racecourse.
Filey has a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line. A second station at Filey Holiday Camp railway station to the south of the town served the former Butlins holiday camp. The camp has since been re-developed into a 600-home holiday housing development, The Bay Filey. It is one of the largest coastal developments of this kind in the UK and the first homes were completed in 2007.
In July 2007 Filey was hit by flash floods which caused major problems

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD247D - Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545.
Since that time, the ruins of the abbey have continued to be used by sailors as a landmark at the headland. Since the 20th century, the substantial ruins of the church have been declared a Grade I Listed building and are in the care of English Heritage
the site museum is housed in Cholmley House
The first monastery was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon era King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu) as Streoneshalh (the older name for Whitby). He appointed Lady Hilda, abbess of Hartlepool Abbey and grand-niece of Edwin, the first Christian king of Northumbria, as founding abbess
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula featured Count Dracula as a creature resembling a large dog which came ashore at the headland and runs up the 199 steps to the graveyard of St Mary's Church in the shadow of the Whitby Abbey ruins. The abbey is also described in Mina Harker's diary in the novel:
Right over the town is the ruin of Whitby Abbey, which was sacked by the Danes, and which is the scene of part of Marmion, where the girl was built up in the wall. It is a most noble ruin, of immense size, and full of beautiful and romantic bits
there is a legend that a white lady is seen in one of the windows

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY559Y - Northern Powerhouse Rail scaled back AGAIN as Tory says 'not much point' in plan
Proposals to build in full Northern Powerhouse Rail, also called High Speed 3, have been scrapped just weeks after they were restored by ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss
Plans for a high speed railway linking major northern cities have been ripped up again amid vicious spending cuts.
Proposals to build in full Northern Powerhouse Rail, also called High Speed 3, have been scrapped just weeks after they were restored.
The project was ditched as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt bid to plug an estimated ?50billion black hole in public coffers.
No10 confirmed the Government was committed to the Integrated Rail Plan announced last November - which watered down the NPR scheme and axed HS2's eastern leg to save cash in favour of a new ?96bn upgrade plan.
The Government was accused of a Great Train Robbery when it unveiled the controversial blueprint 12 months ago.
Former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said there 'wasn't really much point in going and blasting new tunnels through the Pennines'. During her doomed seven-week premiership, PM Liz Truss reinstated pledges to build HS3 in full, linking the North's six big cities - Newcastle, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool and Manchester Airport.
But Mr Sunak has now reversed that pledge in yet another trashing of his predecessor's promises.
His spokesman said: We are committed to the Integrated Rail Plan, which delivers a high speed line and transport improvements across the North
He said: The line itself can deliver a 33-minute journey from Manchester to Leeds, quadruple nearly the capacity of that line, and do so without having to wait an extra 20 years beyond the delivery of what the upgrade can do.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYNX3J - Architecture and features
The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.
The station received Grade II listed building status in 1988

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJG0B1 - On 14 June 2017, a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, at 00:54 BST. 72 people died, including two who later died in hospital, with more than 70 others being injured and 223 people escaping. It was the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom since the 1988 Piper Alpha oil-platform disaster and the worst UK residential fire since World War II.
The fire was started by an electrical fault in a refrigerator on the fourth floor. It spread rapidly up the building's exterior, bringing fire and smoke to all the residential floors. This was due to the building's new cladding and the external insulation, since the air gap between them enabled the stack effect. The fire burned for about 60 hours before finally being extinguished. More than 250 London Fire Brigade firefighters and 70 fire engines from stations across London were involved in efforts to control the fire and rescue residents. More than 100 London Ambulance Service crews on at least 20 ambulances attended the scene, joined by specialist paramedics from the Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team. The Metropolitan Police and London's Air Ambulance also assisted the rescue effort.
Five years after 72 people lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire, which broke out on June 14, 2017, the UK government has announced plans to ban the type of cladding used to cover the external walls of the North Kensington high-rise. These revised building regulations are to be put into effect in December 2022.
The inquiry into the disaster concluded, in its first report in 2019, that this cladding ? polyethylene-filled aluminium composite panels, to be specific ? was responsible for the fire spreading so quickly..

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2205 - Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator. Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name Dodgem. They are also known as bumping cars, dodging cars and dashing cars. The first patent for bumper cars was filed in 1921
The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGJEET - One of Chinatown's most noticeable landmarks is the archway on Faulkner Street. The paifang, underneath which road traffic passes, was specially built in China and shipped over in three containers. Construction commenced over Christmas 1986 and was completed by Easter 1987, a year after the city of Manchester was twinned with Wuhan. The structure was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese community, and is adorned with dragons and phoenixes.
After many years exposed to the elements, the arch required restoration work to be undertaken
netting was wrapped around a part of the structure to prevent further tiles from dislodging. The Manchester Chinatown Community Group undertook a series of charity events, including a dry land dragon boat race in June 2012. In early 2013 the archway was repaired by Manchester and Cheshire Construction Company. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC61Y7 - St Oswald's Church, is in the village of Winwick, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Winwick.
History
A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580. Much damage was done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank. The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847?49 for the 13th Earl of Derby. The spire was rebuilt and the church was restored in 1869 by the Lancaster partnership of Paley and Austin. On Thursday 13 January 1887, Titanic Captain Edward Smith married Sarah Eleanor Pennington in the church. In 1931?32 Henry Paley successor in the Lancaster architectural practice, now known as Austin and Paley, restored the tower at a cost of ?463, and in 1934 he added a new vestry, porch and entrance at a cost of ?232
The church is built of sandstone with a metal, stainless steel, roof. Its plan consists of a west tower, a nave of six bays with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chapel in the east bay of each aisle, a chancel and sanctuary of three bays, and a north vestry. The south chapel is the Legh Chapel and the north chapel belonged to the Gerard family. The tower is in three stages and has a recessed spire. On the west face is a door above which is a three-light window.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H4K - Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy) is a fortification in Conwy, located in North Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around ?15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294?95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndr in 1401.
Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath, the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a UNESCO world heritage site tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H4T - Conwy previously known in English as Conway, is a walled market town, community and the administrative centre of Conwy County Borough in North Wales. The walled town and castle stand on the west bank of the River Conwy, facing Deganwy on the east bank. The town formerly lay in Gwynedd and prior to that in Caernarfonshire. The community, which also includes Deganwy and Llandudno Junction, had a population of 14,753 at the 2011 census.
Although the community of Conwy straddles the River Conwy, for postal purposes the areas on the east bank form part of the post town of Llandudno Junction, with the Conwy post town being confined to west bank of the river. The ward on the west bank of the river had a population of 4,065 at the 2011 census.
The resident population of the wider Conwy County Borough was estimated to be 116,200 in an ONS-estimate.
The name 'Conwy' derives from the old Welsh words cyn (chief) and gwy (water), the river being originally called the 'Cynwy

Grappenhall
Main Location: Land to the East of Stretton Road, North of Pepper Street, Appleton Thorn
Proposal: Full Planning (Major) - Proposed Erection of 71 dwellings, public open space, landscape and associated infrastructure.
Following pressure from campaigners, the scheme was reduced again.
The revised proposal for 71 properties to make way for more green space on the site was approved by the committee on Wednesday.
It will feature 22 affordable homes and eight bungalows.
It brings an end to a long planning battle, with residents campaigning against the proposals since the developer held public consultations in 2014.
Kevin McAloon, representing the Campaign Against Ruining our Environment and Neighbourhood Development Plan groups, said residents felt a 'more acceptable' amount of green space has been provided following positive talks with Bloor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG982H - Face of Wigan sculpture, Wigan
The Face of Wigan is a dramatic 5.5m high stainless steel sculpture of a face, which is destined to become another iconic image of the borough.
The piece is a new take on an old favourite as its creator, acclaimed English sculptor Rick Kirby explains: The face is a play on the many portraits and busts of the ?good and glorious' that adorn the parks and centres of every town and city throughout Britain.
The sculptured portrait is intended to represent not a single celebrity, but all of the inhabitants of the area, the very people of Wigan. These are the people who make the place what it is today, and indeed have the power to determine what will be the future.
The rear of the piece is a highly reflective surface set at different angles which will mirror fragments of people passing as well as the surrounding landscape.
Mr Kirby is known for a vast collection of striking public art works including ?Continuum' at Alexandra Park Lake in Hastings and ?Cross the divide' at the South Bank in London.
Funding for the project totalling almost ?80,000 was provided by Modus Properties, developers of Wigan's Grand Arcade shopping centre as part of an agreement with Wigan Council to provide a major piece of public art in the town centre.
Louise Pearson, Development Manager for Modus says: We are delighted to have assisted in the delivery of this important piece of public art. Plus, we're happy to see that it is in a prime location to oversee the next phase of regeneration in the town centre.
Consultation about the piece took place with shoppers and visitors to the town centre over the summer of 2007, with people giving their thoughts and suggestions on a number of designs. At the end of the process, The Face of Wigan was the clear winner.
The Face came to its new home at The Wiend in Wigan town centre on Tuesday (December 9).
It will spend up to 18 months in this location before embarking on a tour of different locations in the borough ov

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E4 - Manchester's famous Canal Street is now home to the largest LGBT piece of street art in the UK. The multi-coloured makeover took a little more than a week of hard work on the side of The Molly House on Richmond Street to be finished.
Organised by Queerchester, which lobbies and fundraises for arts and culture initiatives in the gay village, the project saw the entries of the street art competition winners Glenn Jones (the overall winner), Lauren Jo Kelly, Adam Pryce and Mark Wallis become bigger than they could ever have imagined with the help of renowned graffiti artists Aylo (Hayley Garner) and Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard). Over 950 online votes and 7 judges chose between 29 brilliantly creative entries to pick the winners.
The mural depicts five famous faces who are considered to be LGBT icons, two of which are very well known around Manchester's gay scene
legendary drag queens Anna Phylactic (top) and Foo Foo Lammar (top right). The others are feminist Emmeline Pankhurst (top left), writer Quentin Crisp (bottom left) and scientist Alan Turing (bottom right). Lauren Jo Kelly designed Anna while Glenn Jones created the other four. Adam Pryce's cute critters in the top left above the rainbow and Mark Wallis' naked man below it complete the work of art.
If you've been around the village during the last week or so you may have seen the mural, which was done using spray paint instead of brushes, in progress. Have you been to see it and what are your thoughts? Would you like to see more art like this around Canal Street and the rest of Manchester? We certainly would!
You can read more about Queerchester and its aim for more arts around Canal Street on their Facebook page and for more images from throughout the competition and of the mural as it unfolded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5HA - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5M4 - Turing has been honoured in various ways in Manchester, the city where he worked towards the end of his life. In 1994, a stretch of the A6010 road (the Manchester city intermediate ring road) was named Alan Turing Way. A bridge carrying this road was widened, and carries the name Alan Turing Bridge. A statue of Turing was unveiled in Manchester on 23 June 2001 in Sackville Park, between the University of Manchester building on Whitworth Street and Canal Street. The memorial statue depicts the father of computer science sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. Turing is shown holding an apple. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912?1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it could appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'. However, the meaning of the coded message is disputed, as the 'u' in 'computer' matches up with the 'u' in 'ADXUO'. As a letter encoded by an enigma machine can not appear as itself, the actual message behind the code is uncertain.[207]
Turing memorial statue plaque in Sackville Park, Manchester
A plaque at the statue's feet reads 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation: Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture. The sculptor buried his own old Amstrad computer under the plinth as a tribute to the godfather of all modern computers - The Alan Turing Memorial, situated in Sackville Park in Manchester, England, is in memory of Alan Turing, a pioneer of modern computing. Turing is believed to have committed suicide in 1954 two years after being convicted of gross indecency (i.e. homosexual acts). As such he is as much a gay icon as an icon of computing, and it is no coincidence that this memorial is situated near Canal Street, Manchester's gay village.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5XF - The park contains the Alan Turing memorial statue, which depicts the father of modern computing sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. The park was chosen because, It's got the university science buildings ... on one side and its got all the gay bars on the other side, where apparently he spent most of his evenings
The statue was unveiled on 23 June, Turing's birthday, in 2001. It was conceived by Richard Humphry, a barrister from Stockport, who set up the Alan Turing Memorial Fund in order to raise the necessary funds. Humphry had come up with the idea of a statue after seeing Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Code starring the actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and Jacobi became the patron of the fund. Glyn Hughes, an industrial sculptor from Adlington near Westhoughton, was commissioned to sculpt the statue. The Fund eventually raised around ?15,000, which was far short of the ?50,000 needed to have the statue cast in Britain. No major computer company donated to the fund, which was, according to the sculptor, because Turing was not American. The statue was cast in China.
Turing is shown holding an apple?a symbol classically used to represent forbidden love, as well as being the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the object that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation, and the means of Turing's own death. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912-1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it would appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'.

There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation saying 'Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.' The sculptor buried his old Amstrad computer, which was an early popular home computer, under the plinth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF638 - Here's a little insight into the world of D7606
Picking spots is not always easy, a lot of areas like the east end of London are quite saturated with street art, finding a spot without going over other peoples work and tags is always a priority. Being respectful to others work is very important to me. So I like to find new spots and go into areas where no one has been before, I did a series of Bollywood actors and found myself in a busy Southall one night, that was fun. I have been into the urbex spots around Sheffield where the spray can and letters are king, so adding brightly coloured paste ups to those grimy walls is a risk and one I'm glad I have taken, some will approve and others will not but that's the joy of trying new places.
Mostly I am a lover of other peoples work and my photography of that work is how I find different neighbourhoods. Most areas are well know so often I just wander around taking photos, this then gives me that opportunity to do my own work too. I guess my favourite areas right now are Sheffield in the UK and Kreuzberg in Berlin, the back streets are full of grimy walls and doors, a perfect place for paste ups, stickers and tags..
I love those iconic British symbols, ask an American to name an iconic British symbol and a lot will say our red phone box or post box. They featured in my first work and still do in a big way.
Oh yes, I love to take those iconic British symbols abroad, I have travelled a fair bit in the last year- France, Germany and the USA. Hard to say a favourite place really, all have great art and great spots. Overall New York was the most impressive but maybe that was a size thing? It is massive, so much to see and so much good original work around.
Have you ever got in trouble with the police or other people for putting up your work?
Ha? oh no, everything I do is within the law !!! I am sure I have annoyed people with my work, some artists are honest enough to say? stop !! That's too much !! or that latest work

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98RH - The Refuge Assurance Company Ltd. was a life insurance and pensions company based in England. It was founded by James Proctor and George Robins in Dukinfield, Cheshire in 1858. The company was originally known by the unwieldy name of the Refuge Friend in Deed Life Assurance and Sick Fund Friendly Society.
From 1895 until 1987, its head office was the magnificent Grade II* listed, Refuge Assurance Building on Oxford Street in central Manchester, now used as the Principal Hotel. In 1987, the company decided to move out of the city centre to new, purpose-built, offices in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall in Wilmslow, around 12 miles south of the old Refuge Building. In October 1996, the Refuge Assurance Company merged with United Friendly to form the United Assurance Group (UAG).
After disappointing performances following the merger, the United Assurance Group was first approached by Britannic Assurance in November 1999, and then by Royal London Mutual Insurance Society in February 2000. Following successful talks, Royal London took over UAG for ?1.6 billion.
The Refuge Assurance Building, Manchester, on Oxford Road, was the company's head office between 1895 and 1987

The Pyramid, opened in 2002, hosts various classes throughout the year for people interested in discovering the arts. Pyramid also hosts a monthly Comedy Store Event, local band nights as well as having a varied programme of weekly classes. One of its studios was named in 2011 after the late Pete Postlethwaite.
The Parr Hall and Pyramid Arts Centre are located in the Cultural quarter of Warrington town centre, in Palmyra Square.
The Parr Hall is the only surviving professional concert hall venue in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
Parr Hall was designed by the local architect William Owen in 1895.
Originally it was built for the people of Warrington by Joseph Parr. Warrington Musical Society gave the first concert.
The hall has hosted concerts and organ recitals from leading orchestras and cathedral organists over the years.
The Rolling Stones performed at the venue on 25 November 1963, The Moody Blues on 1 March 1965 and The Who on 22 March and 11 October 1965. The band James - having sold out concerts at much larger venues - played the Parr Hall on 20 December 1991 to record a promotional video. Other notable artist such as Feeder, The Courteeners, Beady Eye, Arctic Monkeys, and Shane Filan of Westlife have played at the venue, and Jools Holland is a regular performer.
The Parr Hall has also hosted many famous comedians including Andy Parsons, Jimmy Carr and Andi Osho.
It has also been home since 1992 to the Warrington Scouts Gang Show.
The Warrington Male Voice Choir have been regular performers at the Hall for the past 100 years.
The Parr Hall was the chosen venue for the first Stone Roses concert since 1996 when the band announced a last-minute show on 23 May 2012

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFKM - Castlefield is an inner city conservation area of Manchester in North West England. The conservation area which bears its name is bounded by the River Irwell, Quay Street, Deansgate and the Chester Road. It was the site of the Roman era fort of Mamucium or Mancunium which gave its name to Manchester. It was the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world's first industrial canal, built in 1764
the oldest canal warehouse opened in 1779. The world's first passenger railway terminated here in 1830, at Liverpool Road railway station[1] and the first railway warehouse opened here in 1831.

The Rochdale Canal met the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield in 1805 and in the 1830s they were linked with the Mersey and Irwell Navigation by two short cuts. In 1848 the two viaducts of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway crossed the area and joined each other, two further viaducts and one mainline station Manchester Central railway station followed. It has a tram station, Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop (formerly G-Mex) providing frequent Manchester Metrolink services to Eccles, Bury, Altrincham, Manchester Piccadilly, East Didsbury and Rochdale.
Castlefield was designated a conservation area in 1980 and the United Kingdom's first designated Urban Heritage Park in 1982

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PAN560 - Old Trafford is a football stadium in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, and the home of Manchester United. With a capacity of 74,994, it is the largest club football stadium (and second largest football stadium overall after Wembley Stadium) in the United Kingdom, and the eleventh-largest in Europe. It is about 0.5 miles (800 m) from Old Trafford Cricket Ground and the adjacent tram stop.
Nicknamed The Theatre of Dreams by Bobby Charlton, Old Trafford has been United's home ground since 1910, although from 1941 to 1949 the club shared Maine Road with local rivals Manchester City as a result of Second World War bomb damage. Old Trafford underwent several expansions in the 1990s, and 2000s, including the addition of extra tiers to the North, West and East Stands, almost returning the stadium to its original capacity of 80,000. Future expansion is likely to involve the addition of a second tier to the South Stand, which would raise the capacity to around 88,000. The stadium's record attendance was recorded in 1939, when 76,962 spectators watched the FA Cup semi-final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town.
Old Trafford has hosted FA Cup semi-finals, England fixtures, matches at the 1966 World Cup and Euro 96 and the 2003 Champions League Final, as well as rugby league's annual Super League Grand Final and the final of two Rugby League World Cups. It also hosted football matches at the 2012 Summer Olympics, including women's international football for the first time in its history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PAN566 - The Peveril of the Peak, named after Walter Scott's Novel is also a famous pub in central Manchester.
It is also the name of a stagecoach / mailcoach which ued to travel across the Peak District, from Luton to Manchester
Peveril of the Peak (1823) is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Along with Ivanhoe, Kenilworth, and Woodstock this is one of the English novels in the Waverley novels series, with the main action taking place around 1678 in the Peak District, the Isle of Man, and London, and centring on the Popish Plot.
Plot introduction
Julian Peveril, a Cavalier, is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, a Roundhead's daughter, but both he and his father are accused of involvement with the Popish Plot of 1678.
Most of the story takes place in Derbyshire, London, and on the Isle of Man. The title refers to Peveril Castle in Castleton, Derbyshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9FFM1 - The Cheshire Ring is a canal cruising circuit or canal ring, which includes sections of six canals in and around Cheshire and Greater Manchester in North West England: the Ashton Canal, Peak Forest Canal, Macclesfield Canal, Trent and Mersey Canal, Bridgewater Canal and Rochdale Canal.
Because it takes boats approximately one week to complete the circuit, it is suited to narrowboat holidays that start at and return to the same location. The route has 92 locks and is 97 miles (156 km) long. It passes through contrasting landscapes between Manchester city centre and rural Cheshire with views of the Peak District and the Cheshire Plain.
The term Cheshire Ring first appeared in the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) Bulletin in 1965,[2] where it was coined as part of a campaign to prevent the abandonment of, and restore navigation to, part of what had been known as the Peak Forest Circular Route between Manchester and Marple. When commercial carrying declined after the Second World War, sections of the Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals that make up the urban part of the ring had gradually fallen into disuse, and by the early 1960s were impassable, with little depth of water and many locks in an unusable condition. There was a risk that the canals would be abandoned, and infilled, as they were becoming stinking eyesores. Perseverance by the IWA and the Peak Forest Canal Society paid off, and on 1 April 1974, following restoration, the ring was re-opened to navigation.
The Rochdale Canal (unlike most other canals in England) was not nationalised in 1947, and remained in the ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company. Both the Rochdale Canal and Bridgewater Canal escaped nationalisation as a result of being owned subsidiaries of the Manchester Ship Canal company.
In 2002, as part of the restoration of the Rochdale, ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company passed to the Waterways Trust, and British Waterways became the navigation authority, bringing to an end the ?3

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.
Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise ? the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.
Jack in the Box is an award-winning producer of real ale and cider that operate across the Mackie Mayor and Altrincham

It is one of the 35 major centres identified in the London Plan.
Laid out as a residential district from 1791 and originally part of the manor of Kentish Town and the parish of St Pancras, London, Camden Town became an important location during the early development of the railways, which reinforced its position on the London canal network. The area's industrial economic base has been replaced by service industries such as retail, tourism and entertainment. The area now hosts street markets and music venues which are strongly associated with alternative culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H6JMR7 - Aberdeen Harbour was the first publicly limited company in the United Kingdom and is today the principal commercial port in northern Scotland and an international port for general cargo, roll-on/roll-off and container traffic. The harbour also serves NorthLink Ferries, which sail to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, Shetland. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum (on Shiprow in the city centre) includes exhibitions and displays which tell the story of the harbour and its role in the economy and development of the city.
Originally, the defective harbour, with a shallow sand and gravel bar at its entrance, retarded the trade of Aberdeen, but under various acts since 1773 it was greatly deepened.
By the Harbour Act of 1868, the river Dee near the harbour was diverted from the south at a cost of ?80,000, and 90 acres (364,000 m?) of new ground, in addition to 25 acres (101,000 m?) formerly made up, were provided on the north side of the river for the Albert Basin (with a graving dock), quays and warehouses. A 1050 ft (320 m) long concrete breakwater was constructed on the south side of the stream as a protection against south-easterly gales. On Girdleness, the southern point of the bay, a lighthouse was built in 1833.
The North Pier, built partly by John Smeaton 1775-81, and partly by Thomas Telford 1810-15, extends nearly 3,000 ft (1000 m) into the North Sea and raised the bar.
Victoria Dock, named in honour of the queen's visit to the city in that year, is a wet dock of 29 acres (117,000 m?) and with 6000 ft (1800 m) of quay, was completed in 1848

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF08W - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM08W - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and are up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast
the Catholic Short Strand from the Protestant Cluan Place areas of East Belfast
and the Protestant Fountain estate and Catholic Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed. While, on 1 September 2011, Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls, a study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT7P - City Sightseeing is a World's largest excursion sightseeing bus tour operator. It provides tour bus services in more than a hundred cities around the world. The tours are operated by well-recognisable red open top double-decker buses.
The tourist attraction buses travel near major landmarks, while a prerecorded or live commentary in multiple languages is provided through small headphones to passengers. Tourists may leave and board the company buses within their ticket's time limit at special bus stops on a circular route. This is called hop-on-hop-off. In large cities buses go on more than one route. On some routes buses leave the city for suburban sights (such as from Sintra to Cabo da Roca). In some cities (such as New York City) buses operate even at night. In some cities (such as Prague, Moscow, Saint Petersburg) some variants of the ride include travelling by boat. The United Kingdom, Italy and Spain are the countries with the largest number of cities with City Sightseeing service.
Tickets are issued for either one or two day rides, and are purchased at tourist attractions or online. Tickets and discount offers are transferable between the worldwide tours. In some cities, rides by City Sightseeing are included in the city's guest card. A free map of the route for each city is offered as guide and advertisement as well as headphones are free for users. In 2011, nearly 13 million tourists took City Sightseeing tours

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBN6M - Phase 2CC ? Second Manchester Metrolink City Crossing
With increased tram traffic brought about by the expansion of the Metrolink network, it became necessary to build a new route across Manchester City Centre to alleviate congestion and improve capacity.
Known as the Second City Crossing (or 2CC), the project involved laying 0.8 miles (1.3 km) of tram tracks from St Peter's Square tram stop via Princess Street, Albert Square, Cross Street and Corporation Street to rejoin the original Metrolink line just before Victoria station. One new tram stop was built at Exchange Square. The project also involved re-ordering St Peter's Square and re-siting the Cenotaph to accommodate an enlarged tram interchange and junction. Construction began in 2014 and the 2CC route opened fully in February 2017

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJBPJT - Liverpool Town Hall stands in High Street at its junction with Dale Street, Castle Street, and Water Street in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and described in the list as one of the finest surviving 18th-century town halls. The authors of the Buildings of England series refer to its magnificent scale, and consider it to be probably the grandest ...suite of civic rooms in the country, and an outstanding and complete example of late Georgian decoration.
It is not an administrative building but a civic suite, Lord Mayor's parlour and Council chamber
local government administration is centred at the nearby Municipal Buildings. The town hall was built between 1749 and 1754 to a design by John Wood the Elder replacing an earlier town hall nearby. An extension to the north designed by James Wyatt was added in 1785. Following a fire in 1795 the hall was largely rebuilt and a dome designed by Wyatt was built. Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the town hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.
The ground floor contains the city's Council Chamber and a Hall of Remembrance for the Liverpool servicemen killed in the First World War. The upper floor consists of a suite of lavishly decorated rooms which are used for a variety of events and functions. Conducted tours of the building are arranged for the general public and the hall is licensed for weddings.

Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. It's a veritable museum with photographs of the station in it's heyday, railway and other memorabilia. See http://www.stalybridgebuffetbar.co.uk/ to read more about the Buffet Bar.

The north side of the bridge is Tower Hill, and the south side of the bridge comes down into Bermondsey, robbie, an area in Southwark. It is far more visible than London Bridge, which people often mistake it for. If large boats need to sail under Tower Bridge, the two halves of the bridge lift up to let it under. Many tourists go to London to see the Tower Bridge.
When it was first built, Tower Bridge was the bridge. Bascule is the French word for a see-saw. The bascules are the surfaces raised to allow tall ships to pass through: this happens about 900 times per year. The bridge's deck can be raised to 83deg from the horizontal. Tower Bridge is one of London's most famous sights.
The City of London Corporation held a competition for the design in 1876. Over 50 designs were entered, and in 1884 Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry's design was chosen.
Workers began to build the Tower Bridge in April 1886 and the bridge was opened in 30 June 1894.
In June 2012, the bridge was highlighted on the route of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T10 - Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red was a work of installation art placed in the moat of the Tower of London, England, between July and November 2014, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War I.
It consisted of 888,246 ceramic red poppies, each intended to represent one British or Colonial serviceman killed in the War. The artist was Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper. The work's title was taken from the first line of a poem by an unknown World War I soldier.
The installation was visited by the Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge on the day of its opening, and by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 16 October. It is estimated that five million people saw the memorial, and the huge visitor demand saw Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians join calls to try and extend the period for which the installation remained at the Tower so that more visitors would be able to pay their respects.
Tower officials resisted such calls, stating that the transience of the installation was a key part of the artistic concept, and that the poppies would be removed as planned and distributed to their purchasers. On 8 November it was announced that the Wave segment ? a steel construction with poppies around the Tower entrance ? would remain in place until the end of the month, and that the Wave and the Weeping Window segments (both made by the Theatre Royal, Plymouth) would be taken on a tour of the UK lasting until 2018, and would then go on permanent display at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester.

'Gent' who made the town a wee bit famous...
Bygone Burnley, with JACK NADIN
DUCKETT Street, above the former Holy Trinity Church on Accrington Road,
takes its name from James Duckett, of Duckett's Pipe Works, and is a firm
that will still be remembered by many folk in the area. Here, traditionally kiln fired and salt glazed pipes, urinals and drains were manufactured well into the late 1960s, and early 1970s. The firm occupied both sides of Blannel Street, the site of which is now used by small industrial units. On the other side of Accrington Road was the huge quarry used in connection with the pipe works -- also a kids' playground at weekends known locally as Duckett's Delph. The demise of the Duckett's Works was probably brought about by the introduction of plastic for drains and pipes -- much cheaper than fired clay. So who was James Duckett
of Duckett's Pipe Works? Well, James Duckett, the founder of this firm, was born in December, 1825, the son of John and Jenny, his father was employed as a cotton spinner. At the age of nine or 10, he entered into employment at the cotton mill, as many youngsters did at this time, following his father. However, millwork was not suited to young James, he preferred the more open, outdoor work. After a while he was apprenticed to the job of working as a mason, with his brother, who at that time was erecting the building to be known as Barrowford Church. This would be around 1840, when James was just 15 years old. James found this occupation much better suited to his temperament, and a few years later, while still in his teens, he was made a partner in the business. The first large contract the firm was entrusted to was the erection of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church at Burnley, which was opened for divine service on August 2, 1849. Kelbrook Church, near Earby, was also built by James Duckett,.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFAN - Queen's University Belfast (informally Queen's or QUB) is a public research university in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The university was chartered in 1845, and opened in 1849 as Queen's College, Belfast, but has roots going back to 1810 and the Royal Belfast Academical Institution.
The university forms the focal point of the Queen's Quarter area of the city, one of Belfast's four cultural districts. It offers academic degrees at various levels and across a broad subject range, with over 300 degree programmes available. Since 1 March 2014, Patrick Johnston has been the university's 12th President and Vice-Chancellor. Its Chancellor is Thomas Moran.
Queen's is a member of the Russell Group of leading research intensive universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, Universities Ireland and Universities UK. The university is associated with two Nobel laureates and one Turing Award laureate.
Lanyon took as his source the medieval great halls of
England and the Oxbridge colleges, following the strict precedents of
the raised dais, oriel window, fireplace for the top table, and a
screened passage at the opposite end. These plans fell victim to the
original budget cuts
Lanyon's planned gallery was never built and
the panelling remained modest, the latter not helped by later
redecorations. All of this changed in 2000 with the restoration of the
Great Hall by Consarc Conservation, architects. The floor and dais
were replaced and the oriel window unblocked. New pitch pine
panelling and a screened passage with a gallery above, the
replacement of the missing end trusses, and the comprehensive
redecoration and installation of a new lighting system, have all
combined to create a warm, powerful and theatrical space at the
heart of the University. More recently, the restored organ from
Christchurch (where Sir Charles and Lady Lanyon used to worship)
has been installed in the gallery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEFD2 - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1ET - Newcastle upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the UK Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities.
Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University. Newcastle is member of the North of Tyne Combined Authority.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
One of Birmingham's best, Judas Priest often I feel get the raw end of the stick when compared in heavy metal terms to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Metalica &
Kiss. dating back to 1968, the band consist of founder vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton, KK. Downing, and bassist Ian Hill. Drummers have come and gone over the years. They have sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
I saw them two nights running at the Manchester Apollo in 1980 or 1981, supported probably by Budgie or Magnum. On one of the nights Halford came on with his big motorbike on stage and it toppled over on to him. It didn't affect the show however, it was still a cracking gig.
Judas Priest are also known for being revolutionaries in heavy metal fashion. Rob Halford thus began incorporating a macho image of what today is known as hardcore metal/biker/S&
M style into his look as early as 1978 (to coincide with the release of their album Killing Machine), and the rest of the band followed. The look was apparently sourced from S&
M boutiques that Halford visited while on tour.
It became a mainstay in heavy metal
soon, several other bands, particularly of the NWOBHM and early black metal movements, began incorporating Halford's fashion into their look as well. This sparked a revival in metal in the early '80s, and catapulted them to fame, in both the mainstream and underground. Even in the present, it is not uncommon to find metal artists sporting such a look at concerts.
In 1998, Halford came out as gay publicly on an interview with MTV News.
------------------------
This shot was taken at the showery Manchester Pride 2010.
The first 'gay pride' event in Manchester was held in 1990. EuroPride was hosted in Manchester in 2003, and Since 2004 the title 'Manchester Pride' has been adopted. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, which centres around Canal Street, each year. The event comprises a Pride march, and several days of various arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as a festival during the August bank holiday weekend within the gay village itself.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

A significant number of the fallow in the Forest of Dean and in Epping Forest are of the black variety, very unlike this one, the general norm. One particularly interesting population is that based in the Mortimer Forest on the English/Welsh border where a significant part of the population have long hair with distinct ear tufts and longer body hair.
Dunham Park covers an area of nearly 193 acres. It's part of the Dunham Park Estate, run by the National Trust (NT). The park is mostly \u201cpasture-woodland or park-woodland\u201d and has been since the Middle Ages.
Many of the oak trees, which make up the larger part of the woodland, date back to the 17th century. Dunham Park is the only place in the northwest of England with such a concentration of old trees, and one of only a few remaining in England, making it a site of national importance. The park supports a range of animals, including fallow deer like this one and over 500 species of insect.
Dunham Massey has many grade II listed buildings. Among the most striking is the 18th century sandstone obelisk at the end of the north vista from Dunham Massey Hall, close to where this image was taken. Tradition has it that it marks the burial site of a race horse.
There are a number of other listed structures close by in the grounds of Dunham Massey Hall, including the 1720 wellhouse that supplied water to the hall until the 1860s, and the early 18th century ornamental sundial in front of the hall, depicting a black slave clad in leaves, carrying the sundial above his head. A bit of a throwback to a less enlightened age.

They include the Hayhurst swing bridge and Northwich Town bridge, which are believed to be the earliest swing bridges powered by electricity. Both have a sectional pontoon, which is immersed in the river and carries about 80 per cent of the weight of the bridge. Dutton Horse Bridge, which carries the towpath over the weir stream at Dutton, is one of the earliest surviving laminated timber structures. Dutton railway viaduct, which was built by Joseph Locke and George Stephenson for the Grand Junction Railway, is grade II* listed, and a civic celebration was held on its completion, as there had been no deaths and no serious injuries to the workers during its construction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PY19E4 - Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC) is an international airport in Ringway, Manchester, England, 7.5 nautical miles (13.9 km
8.6 mi) south-west of Manchester city centre. In 2019, it was the third busiest airport in the United Kingdom in terms of passenger numbers and the busiest of those not serving London. The airport comprises three passenger terminals and a cargo terminal. It covers an area of 560 hectares (1,400 acres) and has flights to 199 destinations, placing the airport thirteenth globally for total destinations served
Officially opened on 25 June 1938, it was initially known as Ringway Airport, a name still in local use. In World War II, as RAF Ringway, it was a base for the Royal Air Force. The airport is owned and managed by the Manchester Airport Holdings (trading as MAG), a holding company owned by the Australian finance house IFM Investors and the ten metropolitan borough councils of Greater Manchester, with Manchester City Council owning the largest stake. Ringway, after which the airport was named, is a village with a few buildings and a church at the western edge of the airport.
After the airport handled a record 27.8 million passengers in 2017, it underwent major expansion to double the size of Terminal 2, the first elements opening in 2019. The ?1 billion expansion will be completed in 2024 and enable Terminal 2 to handle 35 million passengers. Capacity exists for up to 50 million passengers annually with two runways
[10] however, this potential figure is limited by the airport's restriction to 61 aircraft movements per hour as well as existing terminal sizes to process arrivals and departures effectively.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA1E - The British Rail Class 325 is a 4-car dual-voltage 25 kV alternating current (AC) or 750 V direct current (DC) electric multiple unit (EMU) train used for postal train services. While the Class 325 bears a resemblance to the Networker series of DMUs and EMUs, they are based on the Class 319 EMU. The Class 325 was British Rail's newest unit to take over parcels workings on electrified lines.
In the early 1990s, the parcels sector of British Rail was seeking a fleet of multiple units that would be more cost-effective to run than the locomotive hauled stock it was using. The initial proposal was to convert a number of redundant Class 307 units that were in the process of being withdrawn from passenger service into Class 300 parcels units. Owing to the age of these units however, it was subsequently decided to procure a fleet of new trains. These units, which were ordered in 1994, were initially given the TOPS classification Class 350, before being changed to Class 325.
The 16 units were built at ABB Derby between 1995 and 1996. They are very similar to Class 319 units, sharing the same traction equipment and body design, but are fitted with cabs of the same design as the ABB Networker family.
TOPS numbers are on the front of the cabs under the driver's window in a non-standard typeface (Plantin, the then corporate typeface of Royal Mail), and the units were numbered 325001 - 325016. The units are fitted with large round oleo buffers, and have no gangways between carriages. They carry a livery of Royal Mail red, with two yellow stripes running along the lower bodyside before turning sharply backwards and pointing up towards the roof, black cab window surrounds and a full yellow warning panel. Each set is made up of four cars, with roller doors in place of sliding ones and no windows. Each car has two roller shutter sliding doors on each side and is designed to hold up to 12 tonnes. They have a pantograph to pick up power from the 25 kV AC overhead lines, and also a s

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JFXKG8 - The race started at 15:00 local time on 3 July. Max Verstappen took the lead at the start from Carlos Sainz Jr., while Lewis Hamilton moved up to third. George Russell had a bad start and was passed by Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu pulled alongside him leaving a large gap between them. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. Gasly backed out but the impact pointed Russell's car to the left shooting him across the track and directly into the side of Zhou's car. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air. He landed upside down, skidding down the track, then skipping and bouncing across the long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway, all while barely slowing and turning sideways. The inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel carrying sufficient speed and momentum to launch it over the tire barrier, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstand. It then dropped 8 feet and landed wedged into the small gap between the fence and tire barrier, stopping on its side with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes. Zhou was extracted from his Alfa Romeo and stretchered to an ambulance

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PAN568 - The Peveril of the Peak, named after Walter Scott's Novel is also a famous pub in central Manchester.
