The gates were made for the International Exhibition of 1862, and then intended for Queen Victoria's Sandringham home in Norfolk. The Queen was meant to see them for the first time at the exhibition but, clearly visible through the gates, was a statue of Oliver Cromwell.
As Cromwell had signed King Charles I's death warrant, royalty didn't like him very much. The Queen's courtiers realised she wouldn't be amused to see the statue, and diverted her.
Coalbrookdale found it hard to find a buyer for such grand gates, so Monks was able to buy and bring them to Warrington to stand at the front of the town hall lawn. Monks also presented the cast iron Cromwell statue, designed by John Bell, to Warrington in 1899. It now stands on Bridge Street and is Grade II Listed.
The design
Because the owner was supposed to be Queen Victoria, the gates have four winged figures of Nike, the goddess of victory. They also had a Prince of Wales motif above the arch in the middle, but this was changed to Warrington's Coat of Arms.
The grand opening
Such grand gates needed a grand opening. So on Warrington Walking Day, 28 June 1895, Monks ceremoniously opened the gates with a golden key and the church groups set off from the town hall lawn, through the gates and on to their walk.
The iconic golden gates are Grade II* Listed, along with the gate piers and the lamps which line the driveways at either side of the town hall. They are also part of the Town Hall Conservation Area. The gates have recently been refurbished to repair, enhance and preserve them for future generations

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GMAACD - Robert Gordon's College is a private co-educational day school in the heart of Aberdeen, Scotland. The school caters for pupils from Nursery through to S6.
It originally opened in 1750 as the result of a bequest by Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant who made his fortune from trading with Baltic ports, and was known at foundation as Robert Gordon's Hospital. This was 19 years after Gordon had died and left his estate in a 'Deed of Mortification' to fund the foundation of the Hospital. The fine William Adam-designed building was in fact completed in 1732, but lay empty until 1745 until Gordon's foundation had sufficient funds to complete the interior. During the Jacobite rising, in 1746 the buildings were commandeered by Hanoverian troops and named Fort Cumberland.

This sculpture is the culmination of years of hard work by Mr Herriot, and the result is a truly iconic piece which will be cherished by generations of Aberdonians and admired by thousands-upon-thousands of visitors to our city.
Sculptor Alan Beattie Herriot added: Seeing the sculpture in place is amazing. I hope that the people of Aberdeen like what has been done. I rather think King Robert would be very proud.
The total height of the statue including the plinth is 18ft 4in [5.6m].
The £120,000 statue was funded by the Common Good Fund which was originally set up by King Robert.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY3RN9 - Stalybridge railway station serves Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. It lies on the Huddersfield Line, 7½ miles (12 km) east of Manchester Piccadilly and 8¼ miles (13 km) east of Manchester Victoria. The station is managed by First TransPennine Express.
Stalybridge station was built by the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway and opened on 23 December 1845. There was a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway station adjacent but this closed in 1917. The main function of the station was as a junction for the Stockport-Stalybridge Line, which allowed passengers from London and the South to transfer to the Huddersfield Line. This role has been lost since it is now possible for passengers to change at Manchester Piccadilly station. The Micklehurst Loop also diverged from the original 1849 Huddersfield & Manchester main line here - it was closed in 1966, but the disused tunnel it used to pass below the town's northern suburbs can be seen alongside the original one that is still used today by trains heading to and from Yorkshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T2J - Arpley Junction is adjacent to Warrington Bank Quay Station, but is located on the goods line that passes beneath. The line used to continue to Manchester but due to structural damage on a bridge over the Ship Canal, it was truncated at Latchford Sidings in the 1980s, just past Arpley Junction to the east.
The main freight passing beneath Warrington station are coal trains to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. These follow a complex route from Liverpool Docks. Most workings reverse at Edge Hill, before proceeding via Rainhill and Earlestown and through Bank Quay station. They then run round in Arpley Yards, before passing Arpley Junction to Latchford Sidings. They then run round again to pass Arpley once more to head to Fiddlers Ferry. Occasionally they can be routed via Widnes to Liverpool instead of via the reverse of the above route, which will entail them exiting Fiddlers Ferry, passing Arpley Junction to Latchford, running round and heading back past Arpley and Fiddlers Ferry to Speke. Generally a train will take 30-40 minutes between passing through Bank Quay on the main line to heading under the station to Fiddlers Ferry. They will take about 90-120 minutes then to return. There are usually about 3 trains operating this circuit, but are dependant on a ship arriving at Liverpool Bulk Terminal.
Other freight trains also use Latchford Sidings to reverse when Arpley Yard is busy.

Pink Military (originally Pink Military Stand Alone) were a post-punk band from Liverpool. Led by former Big in Japan singer Jayne Casey, other band members included former Deaf School drummer Tim Whitaker, guitarist Martin Dempsey who also played in Yachts and It's Immaterial and drummers Chris Joyce (who also played in The Durutti Column and Simply Red) and Budgie (who went on to The Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees).
John Peel gave the band his support and they recorded two sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show, the first in November 1979, featuring Budgie on drums, the second in May 1980. The band's only album, Do Animals Believe In God? was released in June 1980, with the band having signed a deal with Virgin Records who acted as distributors.
A further single was released the next month, and proved to be the final release before the band split up in 1981. Casey went on to form Pink Industry, while Dempsey joined It's Immaterial and later the Mel-o-Tones. Joyce joined The Durutti Column and later played in Simply Red.
The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre. The company formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. It underwent complete refurbishment in 1985 and in 2003, American actor Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention.

A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English alternative rock band The Verve. The album was released in the United States on 20 June 1995 on the Hut label and in the United Kingdom on 3 July 1995 on Vernon Yard Records. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, an integral part of Wigans history in the 1960's and early 1970's, popular dance/music movement.
Following their performance at Lollapalooza in 1994, The Verve returned to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated: \u201cPractising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines.\u201d
Initially, the band tried to record the LP inside the rehearsal room itself, so that 'they could record as they had been rehearsing', but, when this approach proved to be impossible, they relocated the recording sessions to rural Wales with producer Owen Morris. Tom Hiney, writing for The Guardian in September 1997, claimed that the band's experience of recording during this period was 'intense and morose, but it produced an album that will still be listened to in 30 years' time. In my opinion, he was right on that one.
The band thought highly of the album, with drummer Peter Salisbury declaring it to be 'one of the best albums in the last 10 or 15 years. As good as Nirvana's or the Roses', and McCabe claiming it contained 'some of the best music I have ever heard by anyone'. The album was a moderate success upon its release, reaching no 13 on the UK album chart. A centre of alternative and bohemian culture, the area is usually considered to be contained within Newton Street (borders with Piccadilly Basin), Great Ancoats Street (borders with Ancoats), Back Piccadilly (borders with Piccadilly Gardens) and Swan Street/High Street (borders with Shudehill/Arndale). The Northern Quarter is part of a larger area of Greater Manchester that is on a tentative list of nominated sites for UNESCO World Heritage Site Status, a position held since 1999. Its a great place to grab some vintage clothing at Aflecks Palace, some Belgian beer, chorizo burgers at Trof or a brilliant piece of cake with custard in 1950's surroundings at Sugar Junction. For Dave Haslam (I can read his music books all day if I can), the Northern Quarter became the last refuge of the Manchester music scene in the 1990s: 'A community, of sorts, had developed around music-makers wedded to experimentalism, from Andy Votel to Waiwan, nurtured at club nights such as Graham Massey's Toolshed and Mark Rae's Counter Culture ... In 1992, Frank Schofield and Martin Price (of 808 State) had lamented the fate of the independent record shop, yet within five years there were several new record shops in the Northern Quarter'.

Gomez are an English indie rock band from Southport, comprising Ian Ball (vocals, guitar), Paul 'Blackie' Blackburn (bass), Tom Gray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitars) and Olly Peacock (drums, synths, computers). The band is distinguished for having three singers and four songwriters, employing traditional and electronic instruments. Their sound is versatile and evades typical music genres falling into blues, indie, alternative, rock, folk, psychedelic and experimental.
Their first album, Bring It On, won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998, giving them much media attention in the UK and throughout the world. Later awards came from the NME and Q Magazine along with a Brit Awards nomination. Bring It On is the debut album that this track comes from.
Gomez entered the recording studios in late 1997 to turn their demos into an album. As well, Gomez toured the UK with Embrace. Their first single '78 Stone Wobble' was released in March 1998 with their debut album Bring It On coming out a month later.
The album received a good critical response from both sides of the Atlantic with Spin calling it a 'damn beautiful album'. Sales in the UK really took off when it won the 1998 Mercury Music Prize for best album beating the favourites Massive Attack's Mezzanine and The Verve's Urban Hymns. 'Get Myself Arrested' and 'Whippin' Piccadilly' were later released as singles.
This bridge links the Canal St area with Piccadilly railway station. Manchester Piccadilly (Manchester London Road until 1960) is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. These platforms were referred to as the MSJAR or South Junction platforms. During the early 1880s the station was enlarged. Is This Desire? is a 1998 (see 1998 in music) album by British singer-songwriter PJ Harvey.
Recorded on and off in Dorset and London between April 1997 and April 1998, it was co-produced by Flood, Head and Harvey herself, and featured instrumental contributions from Rob Ellis, John Parish, Mick Harvey, Eric Drew Feldman, Joe Gore and Jeremy Hogg. It marked a move away from Harvey\u2019s earlier guitar-driven rock style into subtler, quieter, atmospheric soundscapes and mood pieces based around keyboards, bass and electronics.
The album met with a mixed reception from critics and fans upon release, some of whom were disappointed by Harvey\u2019s experimental and less bombastic new style. Reviews were generally positive, however. Q magazine praised the record as 'disturbing and excellent', CMJ called it 'another milestone in her already illustrious career', and Entertainment Weekly said it 'seethes with hypnotic power'

Blackpool Illuminations is an annual Lights Festival, founded in 1879 and first switched on 18 September that year, held each autumn in the English seaside resort of Blackpool on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire.
Also known locally as The Lights or The Illuminations, they run each year for sixty-six days, from late August until early November at a time when most other English seaside resorts' seasons are coming to an end. Dubbed as 'the greatest free light show on earth', they are 6 miles (10 km) long and use over one million bulbs. The display stretches along the Promenade from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north.

Stornoway has been settled since at least Viking times although there is archaeological evidence of Neolithic activity in the near vicinity of the town.
The Wicker Woman of Lews Castle looks extra spooky at dusk. She has now blown down and been recently damaged after many months of gliding through the grounds.
It is a clever nod to the cult classic film 'The Wicker Man' (or the Wickerman) which was set on a fictional Summerisle, a remote Hebridean island famed for its popular and unusually abundant fruit produce. The film stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland. Paul Giovanni composed the soundtrack.
The story centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl the locals claim never existed. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island practise a form of Celtic paganism.
The film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright and a few scenes in the village of Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.
The Wicker Man had moderate success and won first prize in the 1974 Festival of Fantastic Films in Paris, but largely slipped into obscurity. In 1977 the American film magazine Cinefantastique devoted a commemorative issue to the film, asserting that the film is the Citizen Kane of horror movies “ an oft-quoted phrase attributed to this issue
A remake, starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn and directed by Neil LaBute was released on September 1, 2006. It was a failure at the box office and today it has a significant cult following as an unintentional comedy.

Since the JST was established in 1978 over 36,000 people have sailed with us. Of these approximately 12,500 people were disabled and 4,500 wheelchair users.
A trip with the JST changes the lives of disabled people as they suddenly realise that, far from being unable to join in with everybody else, they can do everything. I've seen people come home from a voyage and seem five feet taller “ the experience has completely changed the way they see themselves.

A track from Swindons finest, XTC. You might know them best from 1979's 'Making Plans for Nigel' and the later 'Senses Working Overtime'. The core of the band was Andy Partridge (guitars &
vocals) and Colin Moulding (bass &
vocals). Their style was described as hyperactive pop fused with art rock.
'White Music' was the debut album and it received favourable reviews and entered the British top 40. Lead single 'Statue of Liberty' was banned by the BBC however for making allegedly lewd references to the famous statue ('in my fantasy I sail beneath your skirt'). How very 'British!'.
On 4 April 1982, XTC were scheduled to play at the Hollywood Palladium. Before the show began, it was announced that XTC would not take the stage due to Andy Partridge's illness. XTC never played another tour date. XTC would, however, perform several acoustic sets for radio only in 1989. So a come back tour is unlikely!

A great track that for me brings so many (bad) memories of my young Christmas's. Those cool kids who had a Scalextric, 15 billion hours to set the track up and with that dodgy transformer, the thing never seemed to work.
The fall-back was the Subutteo (generally stored in newspaper in the loft). Somebody would cop for the headless center-forward, or the goal-keeper with no arms. the 'rich' kid of this song ends up in the DHSS (a proper job) handing out Giro's.
Half Man Half Biscuit, (HMHB), are an indie band from Birkenhead, Merseyside. Their stock in trade since the mid-1980s has been satirical, sardonic, and sometimes surreal songs. They are Nigel Blackwell on vox &
guitar, Neil Crossley on bass, Ken Hancock on lead guitar and Carl Henry on drums. They have stayed signed to 'Probe Plus records', spurning fame and fortune.
This track is included on the CD re-issue of their debut album, 1985's 'Back in the DHSS', which topped the UK Indie Chart. In April 2010, the band's 2005 song 'Joy Division Oven Gloves' from the 'Achtung Bono' album was the subject of a Facebook campaign to get it to no 6 on the chart for 12 April 2010, in response to the rumoured closure of indie station BBC 6 Music. The song reached no 56 on 11 April 2010.

The Levellers are an English rock band, founded in 1988 and based in Brighton, England. Their musical style is was influenced by punk and traditional/folk music. It is unclear whether the band got its name from a democratic faction of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army
or according to guitarist, Simon Friend, was chosen from a dictionary.
They are Mark Chadwick, Jeremy Cunningham, Charlie Heather, Simon Friend, Jonathan Sevink and Matt Savage. Originally, all of the band's earnings being put together in a fund from which the members were paid the same amount every day.
1991 saw the release of their second album, Levelling the Land, the source of this track. The LP was a massive success, entering the charts at number 14. The anthemic single 'One Way', despite not reaching the Top 40, became a popular song and live favourite for years to come among the travelling and indie community. Levelling the Land is often cited as an all-time classic amongst people who were students or travellers in the early 1990s.

During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Edinburgh was briefly occupied by Jacobite forces before their march into England. Following their ultimate defeat at the Battle of Culloden, near Inverness, there was a period of reprisals and pacification, largely directed at the Catholic Highlanders.
In Edinburgh the Hanoverian monarch attempted to gain favour by supporting new developments to the north of the castle, naming streets in honour of the King and his family

The historic centre of Edinburgh is divided into two by the broad green swath of Princes Street Gardens. To the south the view is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, perched atop the extinct volcanic crag, and the long sweep of the Old Town trailing after it along the ridge. To the north lies Princes Street and the New Town. The gardens were begun in 1816 on bogland which had once been the Nor Loch.
One of the Edinburgh tramlines can be seen on the right. Edinburgh Trams is a forthcoming tramway system which is currently under construction in Edinburgh, Scotland. It will be the first tram system in Edinburgh since the city\u2019s previous network, Edinburgh Corporation Tramways, shut down in 1956.
The new tram system was originally scheduled to come into operation in July 2011, but the estimated completion date is now 2014, and will initially consist of one line running east-west across the city. After a Welsh track as my last upload, I have had some comments that Scotland has not had a fair crack of the whip. So in the spirit of the 'United' Kingdom, completing the tradition of 'an Englishman, Scotsman, Irishman and Welshman' in a good joke or story, heres a Simple Minds track.
New Gold Dream is the fifth studio album by Scottish rock band Simple Minds. The album was released in 1982 and was a breakthrough point for the band.
Simple Minds are Jim Kerr on vox, Charlie Burchill on guitars, Michael MacNeil keyboards and effects and Derek Forbes on bass. A mixture of session drummers were recruited for the album.
A mistaken origin of the name 'Catherine Wheel' is often assumed to come from David Byrne or Twyla Tharp. In 1981, Byrne partnered with choreographer Twyla Tharp, scoring 'The Catherine Wheel,' a ballet prominently featuring unusual rhythms and lyrics. Productions of 'The Catherine Wheel' appeared on Broadway that same year.' Although interesting, this is wrong. The Byrne/Tharpe catherine wheel refers to the medieval torture instrument of the same name. The Simple Minds track refers to a type of firework (see the catherine wheel disambiguation page for more).

Liverpool Cathedral is the Church of England cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool, built on St James' Mount in the city centre of Liverpool, England and is the seat of the Bishop of Liverpool. Its official name is the Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool but it is dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin. It is the largest cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in the world which ultimately makes it the largest Anglican cathedral in the world, although this title is disputed with the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, New York USA.
At 67 metres (220 ft) above floor level, the bells of Liverpool Cathedral are the highest and heaviest ringing peal in the world. The bourdon bell 'Great George' was cast by Taylors of Loughborough. At 14.5 tons, Great George is the second most massive bell in the British Isles. (Only the 16.5 ton 'Great Paul' of St Paul's Cathedral in London is heavier.)
It is connected to the Catholic cathedral (often referred to as Paddys Wigwam by the cities comedians) in the city by 'Hope St'. It takes its name from William Hope, a local merchant whose house stood on the site now occupied by the Philharmonic Hall, and was named long before either cathedral was built.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4755790262 - 'The now arts centre, original guildhall and jail on St Peter\u2019s Hill in Grantham was commissioned in 1866 by Mayor Thomas Winter after criminal Jesse Dale, who was serving 15 years for stealing, twice walked out of the town\u2019s original jail in 1864.
This original Guildhall and jail building stood on the corner of Guildhall Street and High Street and dated from 1787. After Jesse\u2019s second escape, the governor at the time William Mayer was sacked and a government inspector condemned the building. The inmates had to be sent to Lincoln. The site of the demolished Guildhall was bought by the Stamford, Boston and Spalding Bank (later Barclays) and is now home to the Goose at the Bank pub. To set the scene, a visitor to beerinthe evening described it thus: 'Usually one cask beer available. This pub seems to attract the local mongs and low-life. Tracksuits are a must!'. 'Knobcakes the lot of them'!
Back to the story, on the current Guildhall site was an old school \u2013 The Firs \u2013 housed in a former town house. This and the adjoining land were bought for \u00a32,100. Lincoln architect William Watkins drew up the design for the new building and the work was carried out Mr Wartnaby, of Little Gonerby, for \u00a37,260.
The original Guildhall was made up of three separate buildings - the main building which housed a ballroom and courtroom (or session\u2019s hall), a governor\u2019s residence and a jail for up to 18 men and women on two floors.
However, although it seemed no expense had been spared on the building, officers from the South Lincolnshire Militia were less than happy to find it was missing a certain facility when they booked to use the hall \u2013 a toilet. At this point, councillors agreed one should be installed to avoid further embarrassment.
The new Guildhall was also home to the four-sided clock which was the first time many of the town\u2019s residents would have had the luxury of telling the time with any accuracy. It was this fact that coined the local phrase \u2018under the clock\u2019 meaning, \u2018to appear in court\u2019.
As late as 1930, publican Frank Milner of the Victoria Hotel, Commercial Road, was let off with a caution for serving out of hours because he set his time by the clock which was, and still is, a little slow.
In 1882 an area of the building was leased to cigar makers Robinson and Barnsdale and 15 years later, to the Grantham Technical Institute. Staff who work at the Guildhall today are convinced it is home to a cigar-smoking ghost as, on occasions, the strong smell of cigar smoke will appear in one or more rooms and then after a few minutes, disappear as quickly as it came.
In 1972, a dome replaced the original wrought ironwork over the clock tower and in 1974, the magistrates moved to the London Road, now home to Belvoir Property Management. In the same year, South Kesteven District Council was born and the Grantham Borough Council ceased to exist.
Apart from the Mayor\u2019s Parlour, much of the building was redundant until 1991 when it was redesigned by Sleaford architect Tim Benton and re-opened as the council owned Guildhall Arts Centre at a cost of \u00a31.2 million.
This renovation work saw the session\u2019s hall transformed into the 210-seat theatre and the ballroom was redecorated to its former glory, with the main entrance being at the side of the building. The jail area was converted into the box office.
In 2010 an exciting refurbishment, saw the box office move to the front of the building and the grand victorian entrance being used once more, a new coffee shop was housed in the jail where the kitchen area is still referred to as \u2018the back cell.\u2019.
As can be seen it is tastefully illuminated at night, easily seen when avoiding the Goose at the bank!

It is also the constituancy of Mr Cameroone, current leader of the Tory party (possible prime minister or another ex-Tory leader if he fluffs that gig in May 2010).
A buttercross (as seen here), also known as butter cross, is a type of market cross associated with English market towns, such as Witney and dating from medieval times. Its name originates from the fact that they were located at the market place (same as today), where people from neighbouring villages would gather to buy locally produced butter, milk and eggs. The fresh produce was laid out and displayed on the circular stepped bases of the cross.
Their design varies from place to place, but they are usually covered by some type of roof to offer shelter, although the roofs were mostly added at a much later date than the original cross they cover.
Witney Market began in the Middle Ages. Thursday is the traditional market day and I have spent some interesting lunchtimes here. There is also a market on Saturday. The buttercross was built in about 1600 and its clock was added in 1683.
The town hall, here to the left of the shot is 18th century. Local legend holds that it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, but this claim is unstantiated (a bit like how Mr Cameroooon is to slash UK debt, but not actually increase taxes).
A more credible claim is that Witney was the centre of blanket manufacture (which it was). In fact the local footy team (of which I have not actually seen, accompained by a pie at half time) Witney United FC retains its nickname 'The Blanketmen' from the town's traditional trade.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4469547119 - 'Fiddlers Ferry has been a landmark visable from Runcorn, Warrington and Widnes since the early 1970's. Its a coal fired power station on the banks of the Mersey River, which supplies all its cooling water. In recent years it has been adapted to also burn bio-mass. It can generate nearly 2,000 Megawatts.
Living in Glossop I remember massive freight trains of coal trucks coming over Woodhead and the Dinting viaduct headed for Fiddlers Ferry. Many trains overnighted at the sidings at Gamesley. Fuel for it these days comes mainly from Liverpool docks. Sulphur emissions are reduced by a new FGD plant installed in 2008. Carbon Dioxide is still pumped out of the chimneys as before though to be added to our delicate climate.
Its eight towers can be seen from various high points, including here at the cemetary at Pewtersspear, above Stockton Heath. A modern pub called the Eight Towers (not one of my usual haunts), is located only a short distance away.

Sons, is a bakery that has been associated with Rudheath and Northwich since 1887 and has its bakery on the A556 at the entrance of Gadbrook business park.
The modern factory produces over 2 million loaves, rolls and morning goods each week. In the image the bread cooling area can be seen. On the A556 the smell of toast or fresh bread can often be experienced when standing stationary at the traffic lights.
The Pastry Case also on the site produces a range of sweet bakery products including gingerbread biscuits, chocolate clusters and ambient puff pastry. they are the UK's largest manufacturer of gingerbread shapes. That might be a useful fact for a local quiz night.

The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, access to the adjoining Bhs coffee shop and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4144513368 - 'St Elphins church is a Grade II listed building (easy to miss if its in your back yard) and is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
It's crypt is the oldest room in Warrington, its spire at 281ft is the 7th highest in England. (only wide lenses need apply..).
The earliest known record of a place of worship around the site is in the year AD860.
The church has links to the Patten family who built a vault to bury family members. The last being Lord Winmarleigh in 1892.
The Lady Chapel was founded and endowed by Sir John Boteler in 1290. He and other family members were buried in the chapel.
In 1943 it became the chapel of the South Lancashire Regiment and in 1976 the chapel of The Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

Poole Quay is a visitor attraction to the south of the town centre lined with a mixture of traditional public houses, redeveloped warehouses, modern apartment blocks and historic listed buildings. Once the busy centre of Poole's maritime industry, all port activities moved to Hamworthy in the 1970s as the Quay became increasingly popular with tourists.
The Grade II* listed Customs House on the quay-front was built in 1814 and now functions as a restaurant and bar. Nearby the Grade I listed Town Cellars, a medieval warehouse built in the 15th century on the foundations of a 14th century stone building, houses a local history centre.
Scaplen's Court, another Grade I listed building, also dates from the medieval era. The Poole Pottery production factory once stood on the eastern end of the Quay but the site was redeveloped into a luxury apartment block and marina in 2001, although an outlet store remains on the site. Boats regularly depart from the quay during the summer and provide cruises around the harbour and to Brownsea Island, the River Frome and Swanage.
Public artworks along the Quay include Sea Music “ a large metal sculpture designed by Sir Anthony Caro, and a life-size bronze sculpture of Robert Baden-Powell created to celebrate the founding of the Scout Movement on Brownsea Island. At the western end of the quay near the mouth of Holes Bay is Poole Bridge. Built in 1927, it is the third bridge to be located on the site since 1834

The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre.
The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook, the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn, and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building, known as canal mania.
It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Between 1990 and 1991 a competition was launched and architects James Stirling Michael Wilford Associates was selected. After the death of James Stirling in June 1992 Michael Wilford continued the project.
The city council bid for Millennium and other British and European funds and private sector finance to progress the project. Funding was secured in 1996 and The Lowry Trust became responsible for the project which comprised The Lowry Centre, the plaza, a footbridge, a retail outlet shopping mall and Digital World Centre. The National Lottery provided over £21 million of funding towards its construction. The project was completed in 1999 at a cost of £106 million. The Lowry name was adopted in honour of the local artist, L. S. Lowry.
The complex is close to the Imperial War Museum North and the Old Trafford football stadium. It is served by the MediaCityUK stop on the Metrolink tram network. MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK Metrolink station on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of Broadway Link Road.

Portree (Scottish Gaelic: Port Rìgh, is the largest town on Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the location for the only secondary school on the Island, Portree High school. Public transport services are limited to buses.
Portree has a harbour, fringed by cliffs as can be seen here, with a pier designed by Thomas Telford Attractions in the town include the Àros centre which celebrate the island's Gaelic heritage. The town also serves as a centre for tourists exploring the island.
The Royal Hotel is the site of MacNab's Inn, the last meeting place of Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746.
The town plays host to the Isle of Skye's shinty club, Skye Camanachd. They play at Pairc nan Laoch above the town on the road to Struan.

Gatso speed cameras use radar technology to measure speed, a photo of the back of the vehicle is taken.
Gatso is the brand that Gatsometer BV use on their traffic enforcement cameras, most notably their speed cameras and red light cameras. The most commonly encountered Gatso speed cameras emit radar beams to measure the speed of the vehicle. If it is travelling above the preset trigger speed, one or two photographs are taken (depending on the device's setting, which generally depends on the requirements of the local jurisdiction).
These use a powerful flash, to show the rear of the vehicle, its registration plate, and calibration lines on the road (in many jurisdictions). Newer installations used digital cameras which have limited exposure latitude compared to wet film, these installations use an auxiliary flash placed close to the position where a speeding vehicle would exit the radar beam and the first photograph would be taken

The different lighting temperatures have unintentionally given me the colours of the Wires, blue and yellow.
This beautiful building is grade I listed and is said to have had an entry in the Doomsday book. The north arcade is from the 13th century and is thought to be the oldest surviving part of the building.
Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the nearby Battle of Red Bank. Some damage invariably resulted. The lovely Legh Chapel has a 16th century panelled roof. In there is a brass plaque to Sir Peter Legh dated 1527. Also in the chapel are monuments to other members of the prominent Legh family, including one to Mrs Ellen Legh who died in 1831.
The tower contains of six bells (although I have yet to get into the tower). Five of these were cast (from the 4 existing bells) in 1711 by Richard Sanders and the sixth in 1882 is by John Taylor &
Co. If you have chance to have a good look around inside it is well worth it.

Warrington has been a major crossing point on the River Mersey since ancient times and there was a Roman settlement at Wilderspool. In medieval times Warrington's importance was as a bridging point of the River Mersey, and it was a fulcrum in the English Civil War.
The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby both stayed near the old town centre (the parish church area). Popular legend has it that Cromwell lodged near the building which survives on Church Street as The Cottage Restaurant. The Marquis of Granby public house bears a plaque stating that the Earl of Derby 'had his quarters near this site'. Dents in the walls of the parish church are rumoured to have been caused by the cannons from the time of the Civil War. On the 13 August 1651 Warrington was the scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War when Scots troops under Charles II and David Leslie, Lord Newark, fought Parliamentarians under John Lambert at The Battle of Warrington Bridge.
The expansion and urbanisation of Warrington largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution, particularly after the Mersey was made navigable in the 18th Century. As Britain became industrialised, Warrington embraced the industrial revolution becoming a manufacturing town and a centre of steel (particularly wire, given its name to the local Rugby team 'Wires'), textiles, brewing, tanning and chemical industries.
The navigational properties of the river Mersey were improved, canals were built, and the town grew yet more prosperous and popular. When the age of steam came, Warrington naturally welcomed it, both as a means of transport and as a source of power for its mills.
Heavy industry declined in the 1970s and 1980s but the growth of the new town around Warrington led to a great increase in employment in light industry, distribution and technology.

Unfortunately the old 'Mr Smiths' has now seen better days. Closed now in its last incarnation as Halo, most people might remember it as the start point of the TV show 'Hitman and Her'.
It was a British television dance music show hosted by (record producer &
keen keen railway enthusiast) Pete Waterman and (Vegetarian Childrens TV star) Michaela Strachan. It ran almost continuously for over four years and three months September 1988 until December 1992.
Mr Smiths was quite a good club, visible from anyone crossing Bridge St into town. Tuesdays was usually a lively night. It was pound a pint in town and all Chinese takeaways were closed that night, hence in Mr Smiths it was often referred to as 'Triad Night', due to all young Chinese things partying.
