Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K11P0H - Manchester public art: Robert Owen on corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street
The statue of Robert Owen, which is located on the corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of a sculpture deigned by Gilbert Bayes
Robert Owen was a Welsh reformer who moved to Manchester as a teenager.
He became heavily involved in the cotton industry and, with the help of several Manchester businessmen, went on to buy a large textile factory near Glasgow.
Here he put into practice values of sound working conditions, introduced a minimum age and provided nurseries and schools.
He also opened stores where workers could buy good quality goods at little more than the wholesale cost.
These principles became the basis for the cooperative shops in Britain.
His statue, on corner of Balloon Street and Corporation Street, is a copy of the one erected in Owen's birthplace of Newtown.
It was commissioned by the Co-operative Bank as part of the 150th anniversary of the modern co-operative movement and was unveiled in 1994.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMWGPW - Chester railway station is located in Newtown, Chester, England. Services are operated by Avanti West Coast, Merseyrail, Northern and Transport for Wales. From 1875 to 1969 the station was known as Chester General to distinguish it from Chester Northgate. The station's Italianate frontage was designed by the architect Francis Thompson.
Work on a £10 million regeneration scheme, the Chester Renaissance programme was completed in 2007. The development includes a new roof, improved customer facilities and improved access to the station. A plaque commemorating Thomas Brassey is installed on the wall opposite the booking office. The station marks one end of the Baker Way a footpath leading to Delamere railway station.
Scheduled services from Chester station are operated by Avanti West Coast to London Euston and Holyhead, Merseyrail to Liverpool, Northern to Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds and Transport for Wales to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Airport, Crewe, Birmingham New Street, Cardiff Central, Llandudno and Holyhead
Starting in 2005, the station was restored in the Chester Renaissance Project. Improvements made by Network Rail included groundworks around the east end frontage and repairs to the façade's east and west wings, renewal of the roof's glazing, enhancements to the train shed and other general improvements. Improved local traffic management and access to the station was achieved by alterations to Station Square which were completed in December 2007. Architectural lighting was installed in strategic areas and a new concourse was opened by Arriva Trains Wales in October 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, improvements included a second staircase to access the island platform, structural repairs to platforms, restoration of the overbridge and work to enhance the station's frontage.
The station is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building. It is one of 22 Grade I or II* listed railway stations in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWF0 - The Bartons Arms is a public house in the High Street (part of the A34) in the Newtown area of Aston, Birmingham, England.
Built in 1900-1901 by noted pub architects partnership James and Lister Lea for Mitchells & Butlers, it is a grade II* listed building, and is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub is known for its wall-to-wall Minton-Hollins tiles and its snob screens, which allowed middle class drinkers to see working class drinkers in an adjacent bar, but not to be seen by them.[1] The current public bar was originally divided into three. There are function rooms upstairs, originally for billiards and club use.
Laurel and Hardy once stayed there, after appearing at the adjacent Aston Hippodrome (now demolished, replaced by The Drum Arts Centre), and were photographed serving beer from behind the bar.
The pub features in the 1999 Atom Egoyan Birmingham-set film Felicia's Journey. It also features in the 2006 novel by Ron Dawson, The Last Viking: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Heist
as the gang of robbers meet in the pub.
It was purchased in 2002 by Oakham Ales who restored the building to its former greatness before reopening it in 2003, after three years out-of-use. On 28 July 2006, the pub was damaged by fire, reportedly caused by an electrical fault.
During the 2011 England riots, the pub was looted, windows were smashed, and fires started, albeit quickly doused by the manager, Wichai Thumjaron. Up to eight shots were fired at police who attended the incident.

Halfway down the close is the Halfway House, a famous Edinburgh pub, cosy & tight for space inside it nevertheless offers a good selection of real ales and good food. An oasis between the High Street and Market Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 7706160488 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in Edinburgh New Town, only 10-15 mins walk from Princes St area. Its well worth a walk for a great range of real ales and whiskies. I have spent a good few hours in there with my good friend Stephen Buchan. A chap who appreciates a real ale or two.
Originally a Georgian coach house, in the early Victorian era the building was remodelled into John Kay and Sons, Wines and spirits Merchants. Sympathetically modified in the 1970's the bar hosts a plethora of original Victorian features. its a bit like going back in time, reminds me a little of Mulligans in Dublin. Shame no one has written a novel covering a single drunken day around Edinburgh yet. If so, this pub should surely be in it.
Usually available are Budvar, Leffe, Budvar Dark, Innis &
Gunn, Furstenberg Frei, Corona, Magners, Becks, crabbies, Draught Guinness, Strongbow, fizzy Fosters &
Kronenburg.
I have never eaten there, but they do mince/haggis neeps and tatties \u00a34.10, Scotch pie beans and chips for under \u00a34. More up market herring salad just over a fiver.
Kays, 39 Jamaica Street Edinburgh, Midlothian EH3 6HF - Telephone 0131 225 1858.
Note no Children allowed in bar at any time.
