Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBK1 - The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, commonly known as York Minster, is the cathedral of York, North Yorkshire, England, and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the third-highest office of the Church of England (after the monarch as Supreme Governor and the Archbishop of Canterbury), and is the mother church for the Diocese of York and the Province of York. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of York. The title minster is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches, and serves now as an honorific title
the word Metropolitical in the formal name refers to the Archbishop of York's role as the Metropolitan bishop of the Province of York. Services in the minster are sometimes regarded as on the High Church or Anglo-Catholic end of the Anglican continuum.
The minster was completed in 1472 after several centuries of building. It is devoted to Saint Peter, and has a very wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic quire and east end and Early English North and South transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the north transept is the Five Sisters window, each lancet being over 53 feet (16.3 m) high. The south transept contains a rose window, while the West Window contains a heart-shaped design colloquially known as The Heart of Yorkshire.
On 9 July 1984, York Minster suffered a serious fire in its south transept during the early morning hours. Firefighters made a decision to deliberately collapse the roof of the South Transept by pouring tens of thousands of gallons of water onto it, in order to save the rest of the building from destruction

CBGB is a rock star past his prime ? singing hits we've heard a thousand times and new songs we don't want to hear at all.
Despite the heartfelt efforts to save the club from its demise over a rent dispute ? with the latest charge led by Little Steven Van Zandt ? it's time to let it die.
No longer relevant as a cultural spawning ground, the club's everything that punk rock isn't ? an institution, a landmark, a stop on the same New York tour bus which brakes at the Plaza Hotel and the Empire State Building.
Withdraw the artificial life support. Let it be remembered in our rock ?n' roll hearts, but don't let it wither on the Bowery.
The venerated venue, which opened in 1973, was truly the birthplace of punk. It was where the Ramones sniffed glue, where Patti Smith first danced barefoot, where the Talking Heads turned psycho killers, where thousands of bands screamed their hearts out and plastered their stickers on the walls. It gave kids all over the world a fresh idea of what music could be.
As a heralded institution, it's unequaled, but as a place to break bands, the club hasn't mattered for years. It only draws a crowd for special industry events ? or anniversary parties.
All eyes are upon it now because the lease, held by the Bowery Residents Committee (a non-profit group to aid the homeless), is up on Aug. 31 and hasn't been renewed. There is a court clash and negotiations over unpaid back rent and future rent, which the BRC wants to double.
To support the legal battle, the club is holding punk bandstudded benefits (with big-bang bands such as the Circle Jerks and the Dead Boys) throughout August and September.
This past Monday night, the big guns came to town: Little Steven Van Zandt
Tommy, the last standing Ramone
Lenny Kaye
and Blondie's Debbie Harry.
CB's founder and owner Hilly Kristal turned to Little Steven for help in his fight. You gotta give props to the E Street Band guit

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7M10 - 40 homeless people, a New York street artist and two local creatives create a massive Manchester mural
The Doodle on Ducie Street has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival
The mural, The Doodle on Ducie Street, has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival in November which aims to raise awareness of homelessness and support homeless people.
We had almost 40 artists working on this and we came together just one week ago, said street artist and activist Joel.
It's been an intense week. We got together and asked what we could create that would represent everyone and what message or story we wanted to tell. Everyone made sketches and we made a composition, then each day we came out and worked on it.
Now the wall is a wondrous array of colour, inspired by Joel's signature style, designed to encourage conversation ? perfect for the upcoming festival.
The unique creative team was organised with the help of With One Voice, an organisation which sets out to tackle homelessness in a creative way.
Everyone came together and decided what was important to them. We came up with this concept of the guy on the mural, he's flying through the air from challenges in his life to a brighter future, said With One Voice director, Matt Peacock.
It's been an amazing experience, says Matt. We were really conscious that we were putting this piece of public art in the centre of Manchester, where homelessness has been on the rise. For many years people would rightly say, ?why art?'
And the reasons for that, which I hope you can see, are so many things ? it's about personal and societal regeneration, it's about telling a different story about homelessness, and giving a voice to people who are and have been homeless to say what they want to say to the public.
The artists have found the experience a boost to their confidence.
I wanted to get involved with the mural because I

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05C - Smoking is a practice in which a substance is burned and the resulting smoke breathed in to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Most commonly the substance is the dried leaves of the tobacco plant which have been rolled into a small square of rice paper to create a small, round cylinder called a cigarette. Smoking is primarily practiced as a route of administration for recreational drug use because the combustion of the dried plant leaves vaporizes and delivers active substances into the lungs where they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and reach bodily tissue. In the case of cigarette smoking these substances are contained in a mixture of aerosol particles and gasses and include the pharmacologically active alkaloid nicotine
the vaporization creates heated aerosol and gas into a form that allows inhalation and deep penetration into the lungs where absorption into the bloodstream of the active substances occurs. In some cultures, smoking is also carried out as a part of various rituals, where participants use it to help induce trance-like states that, they believe, can lead them to spiritual enlightenment.
Smoking generally has negative health effects, because smoke inhalation inherently poses challenges to various physiologic processes such as respiration. Diseases related to tobacco smoking have been shown to kill approximately half of long-term smokers when compared to average mortality rates faced by non-smokers. Smoking caused over five million deaths a year from 1990 to 2015.
Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use. Tobacco smoking is the most popular form, being practiced by over one billion people globally, of whom the majority are in the developing countries. Less common drugs for smoking include cannabis and opium. Some of the substances are classified as hard narcotics, like heroin, but the use of these is very limited as they are usually not commercially available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF05F - Block Drug Company was a pharmaceutical company based in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, that specialized in dental care products. Its most popular products included Polident denture cleanser, Poli-Grip denture adhesive, Dentu-Creme denture toothpaste, Nytol sleeping pill, Tegrin medicated shampoo for psoriasis, Lava hand soaps (acquired from Procter & Gamble), Beano and Phazyme anti-gas products, Balmex diaper rash ointments, and Sensodyne desensitizing toothpaste.
GlaxoSmithKline purchased the company for $1.24 billion in 2001.
The company was founded in 1907 by Alexander Block, a Russian immigrant who had a small drugstore on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York. He turned the company into a wholesaler in 1915, then became a drug manufacturer in 1925, acquiring a 50 percent interest in Wernet's Dental Manufacturing Company.
Block Drug moved its headquarters to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1938.
Although Alexander Block built the company largely through acquisitions, he developed the Polident brand internally during the 1930s. In 1948, Block Drug rolled out the Ammi-i-Dent tooth powder, and in the early 1950s, the company developed Nytol. After Alexander Block's death in 1953, his son Leonard N. Block (1911?2005) took over, eventually becoming the company's chairman. The last major new product the company introduced was Tegrin, in 1964.
Although Block Drug was a public company from 1971 until 2001, it operated much like a private, family-run firm, with the Block family holding all voting shares plus 54 percent of the non-voting stock. In addition, the company never held annual meetings or issued proxy statements
Leonard N. Block died in 2005 at age 93 after suffering for years from Alzheimer's disease. Block's nephew John P. Roberts was the producer of the Woodstock Festival using money from his Block inheritance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06B - The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group from New York City formed in 1981. The group comprised Michael Mike D Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam MCA Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam Ad-Rock Horovitz (vocals, guitar).
The Beastie Boys were formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band, the Young Aborigines, in 1979 by Mike D (vocals), MCA (bass), John Berry (guitar) and Kate Schellenbach (drums). They appeared on the compilation cassette New York Thrash, contributing two songs from their first EP, Polly Wog Stew, in 1982. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz. After achieving local success with the 1983 experimental hip hop single Cooky Puss, the Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left the group soon after. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album Licensed to Ill. It was followed by Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up, and Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.
The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the United States and 50 million records worldwide, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004,[4] the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide. In 2012, they became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the same year, MCA died of cancer. In 2014, Mike D confirmed that Beastie Boys had disbanded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06D - As the United States industrialized during the 19th century, immigrants and workers from the countryside were housed in former middle-class houses and other buildings, such as warehouses, which were bought up and divided into small dwellings. Beginning as early as the 1830s in New York City's Lower East Side or possibly the 1820s on Mott Street, three- and four-story buildings were converted into railroad flats, so called because the rooms were linked together like the cars of a train, with windowless internal rooms. The adapted buildings were also known as rookeries, and these were a particular concern, as they were prone to collapse and fire. Mulberry Bend and Five Points were the sites of notorious rookeries that the city worked for decades to clear. In both rookeries and purpose-built tenements, communal water taps and water closets (either privies or school sinks, which opened into a vault that often became clogged) were squeezed into the small open spaces between buildings. In parts of the Lower East Side, buildings were older and had courtyards, generally occupied by machine shops, stables, and other businesses.
Lower East Side tenement buildings
Such tenements were particularly prevalent in New York, where in 1865 a report stated that 500,000 people lived in unhealthy tenements, whereas in Boston in 1845, less than a quarter of workers were housed in tenements. One reason New York had so many tenements was the large numbers of immigrants
another was that the grid plan on which streets were laid out, and the economic practice of building on individual 25- by 100-foot lots, combined to produce high land coverage. Prior to 1867, tenements often covered more than 90 percent of the lot, were five or six stories high, and had 18 rooms per floor, of which only two received direct sunlight. Yards were a few feet wide and often filled with privies. Interior rooms were unventilated.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06F - Block Drug Company was a pharmaceutical company based in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, that specialized in dental care products.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF07F - Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by the group's new record label, Swan Song Records.
The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album in early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, which gave them ample time to improvise arrangements and experiment with recording. The total playing time covered three sides of an LP, so they decided to expand it into a double by including previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for the earlier albums Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy. The album covered a range of styles including hard rock, progressive rock, rock 'n' roll and folk. The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of year release. It was delayed because of the sleeve, which was designed by Peter Corriston and featured a theme around a tenement block in Manhattan, New York.
Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful upon its release and debuted at number one on album charts in both the US and the UK. It was promoted by a successful US tour and a five-night residency at Earl's Court, London, and has since been viewed as one of the group's strongest albums and the artistic peak of their career. The album has been reissued on CD several times, including an expansive 40th anniversary edition in 2015. Physical Graffiti was later certified 16?? platinum in the United States

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PA - Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by the group's new record label, Swan Song Records.
The album was originally released with a die-cut sleeve design depicting a New York City tenement block. The album designer, Peter Corriston, was looking for a building that was symmetrical with interesting details. The two five-storey buildings photographed for the album cover are located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York City. The original photograph underwent a number of tweaks to arrive at the final image. The fifth floor of the building had to be cropped out to fit the square album cover format.
It was delayed because of the sleeve, which was designed by Peter Corriston and featured a theme around a tenement block in Manhattan, New York.
Other than the jam Boogie With Stu, which features former Rolling Stones pianist Ian Stewart, the band provided all instrumentation and vocals themselves, being Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards), and John Bonham (drums). The album was produced by Jimmy Page, with the help of a number of different engineers and mixers.
Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful upon its release and debuted at number one on album charts in both the US and the UK. I

The large facility, originally built in 1919, was designed at a time when Coney Island was the primary summer resort area for the New York metropolitan area, with all of the rail lines in southern Brooklyn funneling service to the area. It is one of the largest elevated transportation terminals in the world.
The station has eight tracks and four island platforms, with trains entering from both compass north and south. It is located at the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues in Coney Island, the site of the former West End Terminal. Geographically, the station is the southernmost terminal in the New York City Subway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PJ - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RY - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK64X - 9/11 memorial's fountains flow
The fountain, where the north tower of the World Trade Center once stood, was undergoing tests of the massive pumping systems that will blast 26,000 gallons a minute over the 30-foot deep black granite walls.
Daniels, who happened upon the test yesterday, said the sight of the water filling the 1-acre pool was awe-inspiring after years of planning and building.
Construction workers from around the site paused to look and listen during the tests as engineers below the memorial plaza monitored and adjusted the 16 pumps that will circulate 480,000 gallons of recycled water.
During the design phase of the memorial, there were concerns that the fountains might be too loud. But Daniels said the sound of the cascading water yesterday created a nice, peaceful background, like the sound of the ocean.
It's perfect. It's not overwhelming at all, Daniels said.
A second fountain over the footprint of the south tower will be ready for testing later this year. A spokesman for the Port Authority, which is overseeing construction of the $500 million memorial, said yesterday's trial run went very well.
The two fountains together make up the nation's largest manmade waterfalls, and are at the heart of the design of the memorial, called Reflecting Absence.
Paula Berry, a 9/11 family member who served on the 13-member jury that picked the memorial design by Michael Arad, was ecstatic about the test run.
The presence of water is incredibly important at the memorial, said Berry. When you think of the memorial's name, Reflecting Absence, you have to have the means to reflect and the water plays that role.
But Berry said the sound of the water rushing over the sides of the fountains could very well be one of the most lasting impressions visitors take away.
Yesterday's tests lasted a few hours, and will be repeated as needed.
Construction of the memorial remains on schedule for its planned opening next Sept. 11 ? the 10th anniversary

The theater with Colbert on the sign
Letterman's successor, Stephen Colbert, continues to broadcast The Late Show with Stephen Colbert from the Ed Sullivan Theater, although extensive renovations were made between the two hosts' tenures.[16] Removal of the Letterman set took place only a few hours after his last show, on May 20, 2015. Letterman's marquee was also removed, and was temporarily replaced by a banner promoting the Angelo's Pizza restaurant adjacent to the theater, featuring Colbert posing with a slice of pizza.
The theater underwent a full restoration to its original 1927 splendor, including the exposure of the theater's dome, which had been covered up by air ducts and sound buffers, the re-installation of the original stained-glass windows, which had been removed and placed in storage during the Letterman era, and the restoration of a wooden chandelier with individual stained-glass chambers that house its bulbs. The restoration was made possible due to advances in technology that allowed less sound and video equipment to cover up the auditorium's architectural details. CBS executive Richard Hart explained that Colbert was initially hesitant to use the theater, but called for the restoration after he was informed about the dome while touring the facility.
Colbert described his new set as being intimate
it features a multi-tier design, with extensive use of LED lighting and video projection backdrops, and a larger desk area than that of Letterman. Exposed for the new show, the Sullivan's dome is lit up with a digital projection system which is used to display images above the theater, such as a kaleidoscopic pattern featuring images of Colbert's face and the CBS logo. New, larger audience seats were installed, reducing the overall capacity from 461 to 370. The theater's new marquee was designed to have a glitzy appearance appropriate for Broadway

41 Cooper Square, designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, is a nine-story, 175,000-square-foot (16,300 m2) academic center that houses the Albert Nerken School of Engineering with additional spaces for the humanities, art, and architecture departments in the newest addition to Cooper Union's campus in Cooper Square, Manhattan, New York City
there is also an exhibition gallery and auditorium for public programs and retail space on the ground level. The building, originally known as the New Academic Building, stands on the site where the School of Art Abram Hewitt Building was located
the site of the building formerly used for engineering will be leased to a developer once the move has been completed. Construction of the building began in 2006 and was completed in September 2009. The project has been controversial in the East Village neighborhood where 41 Cooper Square is located.
Mayne designed the building from the inside out, starting with a central atrium, referred to as a vertical piazza. The atrium plays the role of the public square in the building where social interaction can occur. Its form was created by carving out program space and circulation paths and is contained and accentuated in a steel lattice envelope that reaches the full height of the building.

others have on-board kitchens and prepare food from scratch, or they heat up food that was prepared in a bricks and mortar commercial kitchen. Sandwiches, hamburgers, french fries, and other regional fast food fare is common. In recent years, associated with the pop-up restaurant phenomenon, food trucks offering gourmet cuisine and a variety of specialties and ethnic menus have become particularly popular.[3] Food trucks may also sell cold beverages such as soda pop and water. The tragic & symbolic wreck of Ladder 3 ? victim of 9/11.
In the Memorial Museum located inside of New York City, Ladder 3 rests in its shadows. The remains of what was once a proud fire truck of New York, was one of the first responders to the World Trade Center as it got struck by terrorists on September 11th, 2001.
A dozen brave fire fighters went into the North Tower to save the men and women trapped inside after a plane was deliberately crashed into it by suicide bombers. Captain Patrick Brown took his fire fighters to the 40th floor of the tower, and reported that it had extra men available. The suicide bombings happened during a shift change, and both crews sprang into action to help their fellow New Yorkers.
Sadly, the crew went down with the skyscraper as it collapsed to the ground. As it was tumbling down, the front of the apparatus of the fire truck was torn off.
The truck itself was totaled along with the ladders. Some of the tools that were used for rescue were tangled up into the vehicle after the collapse.
A senior member of Ladder 3 from the NY Fire Department said that the job carries on through the city's proud tradition and that the department is here striving to keep that proud heritage alive today. This is a tribute to every fire fighter that died on September 11th.
When the attack happened, Mr. Wind was relaxing at home while on vacation. He answered to the recall and discovered his crew's riding list on the rig while he was at ground zero. He immediately began searching for them.
Michael Moran also commented that the ceremony was a big step in the healing of the scars that he was left with that day. His brother also died in the attacks as he was collaborating with Special Operations Command. Mr. Moran was a driver for Ladder 3, but he was relieved in the morning after he worked the night shift.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6BN - Formerly the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum was formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to raise funds and manage the memorial's planning and construction. Its board of directors met for the first time on January 4, 2005, and it reached its first-phase capital-fundraising goal ($350 million) in April 2008. This money and additional funds raised will be used to build the memorial and museum and endow the museum.
In 2003, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation launched the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition, an international competition to design a memorial at the World Trade Center site to commemorate the lives lost on 9/11. Individuals and teams from around the world submitted design proposals. On November 19, 2003, the thirteen-member jury selected eight finalists. Reflecting Absence, designed by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, was chosen as the winning design on January 6, 2004. It consists of a field of trees interrupted by two large, recessed pools, the footprints of the Twin Towers. The deciduous trees (swamp white oaks) are arranged in rows and form informal clusters, clearings and groves. The park is at street level, above the Memorial Museum. The names of the victims of the attacks (including those from the Pentagon, American Airlines Flight 77, United Airlines Flight 93, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing) are inscribed on the parapets surrounding the waterfalls in an arrangement of meaningful adjacencies. A portion of the slurry wall originally designed to hold back the Hudson River, about half of what Daniel Libeskind originally wanted to preserve, is maintained in the museum. On January 14, 2004, the final design for the World Trade Center site memorial was unveiled at a press conference in Federal Hall National Memorial

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NA - Take a Look Inside Overthrow Boxing, Where Celebs Like Usher and J-Lo Train
There is a crowd gathering outside the door of 9 Bleecker Street, the gritty downtown headquarters of Overthrow Boxing.
Passersby slow their pace and turn their heads towards the pulsating hip-hop that blares out Overthrow's doors and onto the sidewalk. Through its ground floor windows, and past an aggressive neon red sign, a few dozen young women chat excitedly as they wrap their hands before squeezing into boxing gloves.
Further back another class is still in session, with the participants jabbing ferociously at shared punching bags as an instructor screams down from a ring set alongside an exposed brick wall.
On any given night, a peek through these same steamed-up windows could result in a story-worthy sighting of Nina Agdal, Usher, Martha Hunt, Jennifer Lopez, the Fat Jewish or Will Smith.
This is exactly what Overthrow founder Joey Goodwin had in mind when he started the gym two years ago. I wanted to create an atmosphere that drew you in, he says. Everyone on the outside is trying to get a better look, wishing they were a part of the action.
Atisha Paulson
The phenomenon was one that Goodwin observed while on the iconic West 4th basketball courts, where he started balling at the age of 10.
There he was introduced to the sport of boxing through a fellow player.
I think he saw me run my mouth and get beaten up too many times, remembers Goodwin, leaning back in his office on the gym's second floor. He took me to East River Park and taught me a few moves. I was hooked immediately.
Enrolling in a local boxing gym, the street-wise Goodwin immediately spotted an opportunity for growth. The room was filled CEOs, models, editors and entrepreneurs, he says. I began to see the potential that could come with creating a real boxing brand, done in the style of SoulCycle or Barry's Bootcamp.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NJ - Peter Cooper (February 12, 1791 ? April 4, 1883) was an American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist, and politician. He designed and built the first American steam locomotive, the Tom Thumb, founded the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, served as its first president, and stood for election as the Greenback Party's candidate in the 1876 presidential election.
Cooper began tinkering at a young age while working in various positions in New York City. He purchased a glue factory in 1821 and used that factory's profits to found the Canton Iron Works, where he earned even larger profits by assembling the Tom Thumb. Cooper's success as a businessman and inventor continued over the ensuing decades, and he became the first mill operator to successfully use anthracite coal to puddle iron. He also developed numerous patents for products such as gelatin and participated in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
During the Gilded Age, Cooper became an ardent critic of the gold standard and the debt-based monetary system of bank currency, advocating instead for government-issued banknotes. Cooper was nominated for president at the 1876 Greenback National Convention, and the Greenback ticket of Cooper and Samuel Fenton Cary won just under one percent of the popular vote in the 1876 general election. His son Edward and his son-in-law Abram Hewitt, both served as Mayor of New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6NM - Radio City Music Hall is an entertainment venue at 1260 Avenue of the Americas, within Rockefeller Center, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Nicknamed the Showplace of the Nation, it is the headquarters for the Rockettes, the precision dance company.
Radio City Music Hall was built on a plot of land that was originally intended for a Metropolitan Opera House. The opera house plans were canceled in 1929, leading to the construction of Rockefeller Center.
Radio City Music Hall was designed by Edward Durell Stone and Donald Deskey in the Art Deco style. One of the more notable parts of the Music Hall is its large auditorium, which was the world's largest when the Hall first opened. The new complex included two theaters, the International Music Hall and the Center Theatre, as part of the Radio City portion of Rockefeller Center. The 5,960-seat Music Hall was the larger of the two venues. It was largely successful until the 1970s, when declining patronage nearly drove the Music Hall to bankruptcy. Radio City Music Hall was designated a New York City Landmark in May 1978, and the Music Hall was restored and allowed to remain open. The hall was extensively renovated in 1999.
The Music Hall also contains a variety of art. Although Radio City Music Hall was initially intended to host stage shows, it hosted performances in a film-and-stage-spectacle format through the 1970s, and was the site of several movie premieres. It now primarily hosts concerts, including by leading pop and rock musicians, and live stage shows such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The Music Hall has also hosted televised events including the Grammy Awards, the Tony Awards, the Daytime Emmy Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, and the NFL Draft.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6X9 - Trump Tower is a 58-floor, 664-foot-tall (202 m) mixed-use skyscraper at 721?725 Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City,USA,between East 56th and 57th Streets. It serves as the headquarters for the Trump Organization. Additionally, it houses the penthouse condominium residence of businessman, real estate developer, and former U.S. president Donald Trump, who developed the building and named it after himself. Several members of the Trump family also live, or have resided, in the building. The tower stands on a plot where the flagship store of department-store chain Bonwit Teller was formerly located.
Der Scutt of Poor, Swanke, Hayden & Connell designed Trump Tower, and Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (now the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) developed it. Although it is in one of Midtown Manhattan's special zoning districts, the tower was approved because it was to be built as a mixed-use development. Trump was permitted to add more stories to the tower in return for additional retail space and for providing privately owned public space on the ground floor, the lower level, and two outdoor terraces. There were controversies during construction, including the destruction of historically important sculptures from the Bonwit Teller store
Trump's alleged underpaying of contractors
and a lawsuit that Trump filed because the tower was not tax-exempt.
Construction on the building began in 1979. The atrium, apartments, offices, and stores opened on a staggered schedule from February to November 1983. At first, there were few tenants willing to move into the commercial and retail spaces
the residential units were sold out within months of opening. After Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower saw large increases in visitation, though security concerns required the area around the tower to be patrolled for several years.

the residential units were sold out within months of opening. After Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower saw large increases in visitation, though security concerns required the area around the tower to be patrolled for several years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6XT - Trump Tower is a 58-floor, 664-foot-tall (202 m) mixed-use skyscraper at 721?725 Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City,USA,between East 56th and 57th Streets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6YA - The Village Voice was an American news and culture paper, known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. Founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher, John Wilcock, and Norman Mailer, the Voice began as a platform for the creative community of New York City. It is still kept alive online.
Over its 63 years of publication, The Village Voice received three Pulitzer Prizes, the National Press Foundation Award, and the George Polk Award. The Village Voice hosted a variety of writers and artists, including writer Ezra Pound, cartoonist Lynda Barry, and art critics Robert Christgau, Andrew Sarris, and J. Hoberman.
In October 2015, The Village Voice changed ownership and severed all ties with former parent company Voice Media Group (VMG). The Voice announced on August 22, 2017, that it would cease publication of its print edition and convert to a fully digital venture, on a date to be announced. The final printed edition, featuring a 1965 photo of Bob Dylan on the cover, was distributed on September 21, 2017. After halting print publication in 2017, the Voice provided daily coverage through its website until August 31, 2018, when it announced it was ceasing production of new editorial content. The Voice continues to have an active website, which features archival material related to current events.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHHX - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth ?13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY7XDA - Bridgewater Place, nicknamed The Dalek, is an office and residential skyscraper development in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is the tallest building in Yorkshire, and has held this record since being topped out in September 2005. It is visible at up to 25 miles (40 km) from certain areas.
The development has been designed by Aedas Architects with the developer being Landmark Development Projects and St James Securities with Bovis Lend Lease being the contractor. The developer of the residential element of Bridgewater Place is KW Linfoot.
It was first announced in 2000 and, following several redesigns and delays with the construction process, construction of the building began in 2004 and was completed in 2007. It became the tallest building in Leeds, by a significant margin, and Yorkshire (although this does not take into account structures such as Emley Moor). Bridgewater Place has a height of 112 metres (367 ft) to roof level. Originally the tower was to have a spire which would have extended the height of the building to 137 metres (449 ft), however this was never built.
Bridgewater Place has 32 storeys, of which two are used for car parking, ten for offices and twenty for residential purposes. There is 40,000 square metres / 430,560 square feet of floor space in the building with 200 flats and 400 underground car parking spaces serving both the residential and commercial areas of the building.
Current office tenants include Eversheds, Ernst & Young, ghd, BDO Stoy Hayward and DWF LLP. Retail tenants include Tesco, Starbucks, Panini Shack and Philpotts. The residential element of the development has proved to be a prestigious city centre address.
The major part of the building's construction was completed by late December 2006.[citation needed] The completion of the entire building was commemorated on Thursday 26 April 2007. A special episode of Look North, the BBC's local regional news programme was produced to commemorate the opening of the tower.

An old shot, sadly the noise abatement society have led to the demise of CBGB's at 315 Bowery. I dont know who should be more ashamed. The club originally opened by Billy Kristal closed in October 2006. The final concert was performed quite appropriately by Patti Smith on 15/10/2006.
A lot of my favourite bands cut their teeth there and I remember having early cassette tape bootlegs from CBGB's. My faves were the Ramones, Tom Verlaine &
Television, Patti Smith Group, The Dead Boys (I came across Sonic Reducer on 12' last week- which prompted me to dig this out), Richard Hell &
The Voidoids, The Cramps, Blondie and those darlings Talking Heads.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RP - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7M1C - 40 homeless people, a New York street artist and two local creatives create a massive Manchester mural
