Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91ERX - Conceptual editorial image illustrating the No Kings protest movement in the United States, using a map of America and the hashtag #NoKings to evoke nationwide political mobilisation, civic resistance and public opposition to authoritarian style leadership. The phrase No Kings has been used by organisers and media reports to describe mass anti Trump demonstrations held across the US, framed around democracy, constitutional rights, civil liberties and resistance to concentrated executive power. This type of image is useful for editorial coverage of American politics, protest movements, national days of action, grassroots activism, public anger, democratic norms and the symbolism of nationwide dissent spreading across all 50 states. The map-based treatment gives the picture broad relevance for stories about federal politics, election tensions, civic identity, constitutional debate, social movement branding and protest culture in the modern United States. It also works well for wider search themes such as resistance, anti authoritarian activism, political messaging, campaign imagery, public demonstrations, civil society and the visual language of national protest movements. As a conceptual rather than documentary image, it is especially suitable for opinion pieces, magazine features, web headers, explainers and news articles that need a strong visual shorthand for a broad political moment rather than one specific rally or city. The wording also carries a deliberate historical echo, contrasting monarchy and hereditary rule with republican democracy and popular sovereignty. That makes the image commercially and editorially useful for themes including democracy under pressure, national opposition campaigns, protest branding, symbolic politics, public mobilisation and the geography of dissent across contemporary America. Because the movement has been described by organisers and news agencies as a nationwide protest mobilisation rather than a formal general strike.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E42493 - The interior concourse of Warrington Bus Interchange is shown with the Travel Information Centre, red upper wall panels, passenger waiting areas, stand entrances and people moving through the transport hub. The image is a useful editorial view of everyday public transport in Warrington town centre, showing commuters, shoppers, school and college users, visitors and local passengers using a modern bus station linked to the Golden Square shopping centre and close to Warrington Central railway station. Warrington Borough Council says it owns and manages the Bus Interchange, which is near Warrington Central rail station, and AccessAble gives the interchange address as Winwick Street, Warrington, WA1 1XW. Warrington's Own Buses says its Travel Shop at Warrington Interchange provides ticket sales, general enquiries, timetables and route information. The photograph is commercially useful for stories about bus services, passenger footfall, local transport, public transport funding, town centre accessibility, route information, timetable advice, integrated transport, transport interchanges and the role of buses in reducing car dependency. It can also illustrate the challenges facing town centres, including commuter patterns, retail access, passenger safety, evening service levels, concessionary travel, fare policy and the practical dependence of many residents on reliable local bus networks. The visible concourse, information office, glass doors, red architectural detailing, stand signage and passengers give the scene strong documentary value for transport policy, municipal bus operation, urban regeneration and local authority infrastructure. As a stock image, it records the inside of a working bus interchange rather than a staged transport scene, making it useful for articles about local and regional mobility, waiting environments, accessibility, customer information, passenger flows and the everyday public spaces that keep a town connected.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM02P - An Ask for Angela safety poster is displayed in a Wetherspoon pub, explaining how someone on a date or in an uncomfortable situation can discreetly ask bar staff for help. The poster uses the phrase Hi, I'm Angela and tells customers that if they go to the bar and ask for Angela, staff will know they need assistance and can help them leave safely, call a taxi or support them without fuss. The image is a strong editorial photograph for stories about pub safety, dating safety, nightlife, personal security, safeguarding, women's safety, harassment, coercive behaviour, vulnerability in licensed premises and the responsibilities of hospitality staff. The Ask for Angela initiative began in Lincolnshire as a simple code-word campaign for people who feel unsafe on dates or nights out, and has since been promoted widely across pubs, bars, clubs and hospitality venues. The visible Wetherspoon branding, National Pubwatch logo, website address, taxi icon and #askforangela hashtag make the photograph useful for coverage of public awareness campaigns, safer streets, staff training, bystander intervention, alcohol-related risk, spiking concerns, online dating and customer welfare. It can also illustrate broader debate about the night-time economy, licensing, responsible venues, town centre safety, domestic abuse awareness and the need for discreet escape routes when people feel pressured, threatened or trapped. The poster's direct wording and bright graphic design show how safeguarding messages are made accessible in everyday public spaces. As a documentary stock image, it records a practical safety measure inside a British pub, linking hospitality, policing partnerships, customer care and public information in a simple, recognisable campaign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTT9 - Editorial concept image showing the words Hope and Glory in bright neon lighting set against a large Union Jack flag within an ornate gold frame. The composition turns a familiar patriotic phrase into a loaded political symbol, inviting interpretations linked to Brexit, British nationalism, imperial nostalgia, sovereignty politics and the continuing argument about Britain's place in Europe and the wider world. The red, white and blue neon text has the feel of a bold public statement, but the image can also be read ironically, as a commentary on older myths of British greatness, post-imperial identity and the clash between nostalgic patriotism and modern multicultural reality. This makes it especially useful for editorial themes around Reform UK style politics, populism, anti EU sentiment, culture war rhetoric, anti immigration narratives, English nationalism, flag politics and debates about whether appeals to national pride are harmless symbolism or part of something darker and more exclusionary. The visual impact is strong, with the glowing neon letters creating a sense of theatricality and confrontation, while the Union Jack backdrop anchors the subject firmly in British political and cultural discourse. Suitable uses include news features, opinion pieces, magazine essays, blogs and commentary about Brexit Britain, reactionary politics, national identity, patriotic branding, empire memory, right-wing campaigning, xenophobia debate and the tension between civic pride and exclusionary ideas of belonging. The image also works more broadly as a symbol of contested Britishness, where slogans such as Hope and Glory can be understood either as celebration or as critique, depending on the context in which they are used. A visually striking current affairs illustration for stories about political symbolism, national myth-making, contested patriotism and the ongoing reshaping of British identity after Brexit.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1AY - Exterior of Ben Macpherson's former MSP constituency office at 34 Constitution Street in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, showing Scottish Parliament and SNP signage for the Edinburgh Northern and Leith constituency. The shopfront-style political office includes window posters, public contact details and a large sign naming Ben Macpherson MSP, making it a clear documentary image of devolved representation, constituency casework and everyday local democracy in Scotland. Ben Macpherson represented Edinburgh Northern and Leith for the Scottish National Party from 2016 until April 2026, according to the Scottish Parliament's current profile, which now lists him as a former MSP. Earlier Scottish Parliament contact material during the 2026 campaign period gave this Constitution Street address as his constituency contact point. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Scottish politics, Holyrood, SNP representation, constituency offices, local casework, democratic access, Leith politics, Edinburgh public life and the relationship between elected members and residents. It can also support wider stories on the visibility of party politics in high streets, the practical role of MSP offices, public appointments, advice surgeries, housing, social security, transport, local campaigning and devolved public services. Macpherson has also held Scottish Government ministerial roles, including Minister for Social Security and Local Government and later Minister for Higher and Further Education, giving the image additional relevance for coverage of Scottish Government portfolios and SNP political careers. The Leith location adds urban context, as Constitution Street sits in an area associated with regeneration, civic change, tram development, local business and a strong political identity. Because the Scottish Parliament profile now identifies him as a former MSP, captions should be dated carefully: if the photograph was taken while the office was active, it can be described historical

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CM - This photograph shows the BBC Cymru Wales headquarters building at Central Square in Cardiff city centre, home to the national broadcaster for Wales. The modern structure features a combination of pale stone cladding and large vertical glass panels, with prominent BBC Cymru Wales signage clearly visible on the upper facade. The building forms a key part of Cardiff's Central Square regeneration area, adjacent to Cardiff Central railway station.
The image was taken after rainfall, with wet road surfaces and pavements creating reflective textures across the foreground. Traffic lights glow against the damp streets, while a small number of pedestrians move through the scene, dressed for cool, unsettled weather. The sky is overcast with patches of lighter cloud, suggesting changeable conditions typical of the Welsh climate.
BBC Cymru Wales operates television, radio, and digital services in both Welsh and English, and the Central Square development represents a significant investment in modern broadcasting infrastructure and urban renewal. The surrounding streetscape, street furniture, and planting reinforce the contemporary civic character of the area.
The photograph captures both the architectural presence of a major public service broadcaster and the everyday atmosphere of a working city following rain, blending modern media infrastructure with the rhythms of urban life in Cardiff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CR - This image shows an ornate stained glass panel depicting the Welsh red dragon, known in Welsh as Y Ddraig Goch, a powerful national symbol of Wales. The dragon is rendered in vivid shades of red and orange with raised wings and an alert stance, set against a background of green and yellow glass, colours traditionally associated with Welsh identity. The stained glass is housed within a stone arched frame, suggesting the interior of a historic or traditionally styled bar or pub in Cardiff.
The craftsmanship highlights fine leadwork and textured glass, typical of decorative stained glass used in heritage hospitality interiors across Wales. The dragon's posture, claws raised and tail curled, echoes medieval and Celtic imagery long associated with Welsh folklore, resistance, and national pride.
The surrounding stonework and subdued interior lighting imply a historic building or one designed to evoke heritage character. The glass appears to be illuminated from behind, either by daylight or internal lighting, enhancing the saturated colours and giving the dragon a dramatic, almost heraldic presence.
Such imagery is commonly found in Cardiff city-centre pubs and bars that celebrate local culture and history, blending traditional Welsh symbolism with modern hospitality use. The image reflects the enduring visibility of national identity in everyday urban spaces and the continued role of pubs and bars as cultural as well as social landmarks in Wales.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YAKB - Walthamstow Central is a London Underground and London Overground interchange station in the town of Walthamstow in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, north-east London. It is the northern terminus of the Victoria line following Blackhorse Road and is the second of five stations on the Chingford branch of the Lea Valley lines operated by London Overground since 2015, 6 miles 16 chains (10.0 km) from London Liverpool Street between St. James Street and Wood Street. The two lines have separate platforms at different levels.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 3. It linked to Walthamstow Queen's Road station on the Gospel Oak to Barking line by a broad footpath, Ray Dudley Way. Walthamstow Central is the closest tube station to Walthamstow Market, the longest outdoor market in Europe.
London Overground - The station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) as Hoe Street in 1870 when a line was opened from Lea Bridge to a temporary station called Shern Hall Street which was east of the Hoe Street station. The line to London, that the Chingford branch uses today was opened two years later in 1872 from Hall Farm Junction to Bethnal Green, with the branch also being extended north to Chingford in 1873.
The GER amalgamated with several other railways to create the London and North Eastern Railway at the beginning of 1923.
In 1948 the railways were nationalised and responsibility for operating the station fell to British Railways (Eastern Region).
The line was electrified in the late 1950s
The underground station, like many stations on the Victoria line, was built to a low budget. White ceiling panels were never fixed to the ceilings above the platforms
instead the steel tunnel segments were painted black and used to support the fixtures and fittings, cutting lighting levels. A concrete stairway sits between two escalators instead of a third
this economy caused a disruptive station closure for several weeks in 2004 when both escalators went out of service.

Gambling Commission calls for pub industry to take faster action to prevent under 18s accessing gaming machines in pubs
18 October 2019
A review of pubs in England and Wales has shown that 84% of them are failing to prevent under 18-year-olds from playing Category C gaming machines, also known as fruit machines.
Local authorities have primary responsibility for regulating these machines and businesses are responsible for ensuring that they are compliant in checking age verification. Over the last 12 months the Gambling Commission has worked with local authorities and local police to test compliance with laws in place to protect children from the risks gambling can pose.
Children are not permitted to play Category C gaming machines in pubs. Staff are expected to stop children playing on the machines and there should be clear signage indicating the age restriction.
This follows a test sample taken in 2018 which found that 88% of pubs in England failed to prevent children accessing 18+ gaming machines.
The findings suggest that the rules in place around these machines are still not being appropriately enforced and many employees are still unaware of the restrictions.
Programme Director, Helen Rhodes said: The pub industry must accelerate action to enforce these rules. Pubs must take age verification on machines as seriously as they do for alcohol sales, and they risk losing their entitlement to offer machines if they do not.
Adding: 'The results last year were extremely disappointing and we have supported local authorities in their action to raise standards. This includes working with the providers of training to the pub industry to emphasise the legal requirements in training materials, as well as with the Home Office to work towards including materials on gambling in pubs in the curriculum for the personal licence holder

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MX9FPW - Cadent Gas is a British regional gas distribution company that owns, operates and maintains the largest natural gas distribution network in the United Kingdom, transporting gas to 11 million homes and businesses across North West England, West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England and North London.
Cadent Gas Limited represents four of the eight gas distribution networks in the United Kingdom. Following production and importation, all gas in the UK passes through National Grid's national transmission system, before entering the distribution networks. The distribution network providers, one of which is Cadent Limited, are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of the gas to the end consumer, on behalf of the chosen supplier.
The company does not produce or own the gas that passes through their pipeline networks but 50% of UK gas customers are served by their pipeline system.
The company also manages the national gas emergency service free phone line on behalf of the gas industry in the UK, taking calls and giving safety advice on behalf of the industry. In 2017/18 1.952 million gas emergency calls were answered

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBHP - In late 1994, a number of people began to show symptoms of a neurological disease similar to CJD, a fatal disorder that occurs naturally in a small percentage of people, though usually only later in life. This new form of the disease would go on to be identified as variant CJD (vCJD), occurring primarily in younger people and caused through eating BSE-infected meat. The first known death from vCJD occurred on 21 May 1995, when the 19-year old Stephen Churchill died although the UK government continued to emphasise the safety of British beef and, in September 1995, concluded that there was 'insufficient evidence' to link BSE and vCJD. It was not until 20 March 1996 that Stephen Dorrell, the Secretary of State for Health announced that vCJD was caused by eating BSE-infected meat.
177 people (as of June 2014) would go on to contract and die of the disease.
Regulations and bans of British beef
When BSE was identified, the United States banned the importation of British cattle in 1989, and 499 cows who had been recently imported from the United Kingdom were killed. The United States slaughtered an additional 116 British cows in 1996.
Between December 1997 and November 1999, the British government banned the sale of beef on the bone.
A week after Dorrell's announcement, on 27 March 1996, the European Union (EU) imposed a worldwide ban on exports of British beef. The ban would go on to last for 10 years before it was finally lifted on 1 May 2006, although restrictions remained on British beef containing vertebral material and beef sold on the bone. The ban, which led to much controversy in Parliament and to the incineration of over one million cattle from at least March 1996, resulted in trade controversies between the UK and other EU states, dubbed a Beef War by media. France continued to impose a ban on British beef illegally long after the European Court of Justice had ordered it to lift its blockade, although it has never paid any fine for doing so.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBHY - The National Covid Memorial Wall in London is a public mural painted by volunteers to commemorate victims of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Started in March 2021 and stretching more than one-third mile (five hundred metres) along the South Bank of the River Thames, opposite the Palace of Westminster, the mural consists of approximately 150,000 red and pink hearts, intending to have one for each of the casualties of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom at the time of the mural's commencement. The intent was for each heart to be individually hand-painted
utterly unique, just like the loved ones we've lost
The mural was organized by campaign group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, with the help of the campaign group Led By Donkeys. Volunteers cleaned the wall and removed graffiti before hand-painting approximately 150,000 red hearts over 10 days from 29 March 2021. Bereaved families filled these hearts with names of lost loved ones and messages, with more continued to be added over the subsequent months. Through the project was started without council permission, it gained widespread support and public recognition so has not yet been removed by authorities. As the text faded, volunteers have also traced over writing with permanent black marker pen to ensure their longevity.
The mural stretches more than one-third mile (five hundred metres) along the South Bank of the River Thames from Westminster Bridge to Lambeth Bridge, opposite the Palace of Westminster. Being outside of St Thomas' Hospital, it also encompasses an older plaque dedicated to the 1994-6 human BSE outbreak.
On 29 March 2021, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer visited the mural, which he described as a remarkable memorial, before calling on Boris Johnson to visit the mural personally and engage with the families of the deceased. Johnson later visited the wall for quiet reflection and was criticised by the co-founder of the group, who said that the visit, was a sham

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXH1 - Banger racing is a tarmac, dirt, shale and chalk track type of motorsport event popular in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Vehicles are raced against one another, with the winner being the first to the checkered flag after a set number of laps. Contact to damage an opponent's car is permitted and encouraged within the formula, with cars progressively becoming more damaged throughout an event. Races are held at an oval or tri-oval circuits that are up to 1⁄4 mile (440 yd
400 m) long
however, on certain occasions, races are held in a figure of eight configurations. Banger racing is often confused with stock car racing, although there are differences between the two, despite often racing at the same tracks.
Banger racing vehicles are normally scrap or 'written-off' cars in varying states of disrepair. In modern bangers, there are different events held for different vehicle types.
The most common type are 'Unlimited' bangers, where cars racing have no set engine size limit. Despite the high running costs, this is usually one of the most competitive classes and is favoured by most drivers because of the high speeds and car strengths. Fans often regard the unlimited class as the sport's pinnacle, with many big championship races being raced to unlimited class specs.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K244C1 - Vintage Post Office Savings Bank advertising poster displayed inside a public telephone box kiosk, urging people to Take them to the Post Office Savings Bank and Support the New Savers Campaign. The image shows an aged, weathered public information advert behind glass, with a child's face, a blue money bag marked Savings, halftone printing, fading colours and the worn red metal frame of the kiosk interior. It is a strong documentary image for themes of thrift, personal saving, family finance, children's savings, public service advertising, postal history, telephone box interiors and mid twentieth-century British graphic design. The Post Office Savings Bank was founded in 1861 as a state-backed savings scheme intended to encourage ordinary people to save, and NS&I records this as the beginning of its own history. Later changes separated National Savings from the Post Office, but the poster reflects the earlier period when savings services were heavily associated with Post Office branches and everyday civic infrastructure. The image may be useful for editorial features on household budgeting, post-war savings culture, state-backed savings, children's money habits, public finance, social history, old advertising, GPO heritage, phone boxes, postal services, government campaigns and changing attitudes to thrift. The telephone kiosk setting adds nostalgic value, linking two once-familiar parts of British public life: the red phone box and the local Post Office as a place for saving, communication and public administration. The faded surface and damaged poster give the photograph an archive-like feel, suggesting a surviving remnant of a campaign that promoted prudence, security and responsible saving to families. It can also support stories about the decline of cash-based saving habits, the move from branch services to digital finance, and the way public spaces once carried official messages about money, citizenship and self-reliance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A92 - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108BX - The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and is one of the largest libraries in the world. It is estimated to contain between 170 and 200 million items from many countries. As a legal deposit library, the British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a significant proportion of overseas titles distributed in the UK. The Library is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The British Library is a major research library, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings. The Library's collections include around 14 million books, along with substantial holdings of manuscripts and items dating as far back as 2000 BC. The library maintains a programme for content acquisition and adds some three million items each year occupying 9.6 kilometres (6 mi) of new shelf space.
Prior to 1973, the Library was part of the British Museum. The Library is now located in a building purpose-built on the disused site of Midland Railway's Somers Town Goods Yard and Potato Market, on the north side of Euston Road in Somers Town, London (between Euston railway station and St Pancras railway station), and has an additional storage building and reading room in the branch library near Boston Spa, in the Leeds district of West Yorkshire. The St Pancras building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998, and is classified as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest for its architecture and history
The British Library was created on 1 July 1973 as a result of the British Library Act 1972. Prior to this, the national library was part of the British Museum, which provided the bulk of the holdings of the new library.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6YW - Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oarsone in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) long with several lanes marked using buoys.
Across six continents, 150 countries now have rowing federations that participate in the sport. Major domestic competitions take place in dominant rowing nations and include The Boat Race and Henley Royal Regatta in the United Kingdom, the Australian Rowing Championships in Australia, the HarvardYale Regatta and Head of the Charles Regatta in the United States, and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in Canada. Many other competitions often exist for racing between clubs, schools, and universities in each nation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PMB - The United Kingdom's National Transmission System (NTS) is the network of gas pipelines that supply gas to about forty power stations and large industrial users from natural gas terminals situated on the coast, and to gas distribution companies that supply commercial and domestic users. It covers Great Britain, i.e. England, Wales and Scotland
The system originated in the construction during 19623 of the 200-mile (320 km) high-pressure methane pipeline from Canvey Island (on the Essex coast) to Leeds. Imported liquified natural gas (LNG) from Algeria was turned into gas at the Canvey terminal and supplied to the pipeline, providing eight of the twelve area gas boards with access to natural gas. The gas was initially used to manufacture town gas, either as a feedstock in gas reforming processes or to enrich lean gases such as that produced by the Lurgi coal gasification process.
The pipeline was 18-inch (460 mm) in diameter and operated at 1,000 pounds per square inch (69 bar). The pipeline had 150 miles (240 km) of spur lines, supplying gas to area boards
To exploit the availability of natural gas and to provide for more widespread distribution, construction began of a major new transmission network which became the National Transmission System

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3TJNY - Bargain Booze is a chain of off licence shops, that operates in the United Kingdom. Established in 1981 in Sandbach, it grew to 836 shops and established the Bargain Booze Select Convenience shop franchise.
From 2013 to April 2018, it was owned by Conviviality plc, who also owned the Wine Rack chain. Both brands were acquired by Bestway on 6 April 2018
The company originates from a wholesale wine and spirits business, founded by Allan Whittle and Robert Mayor. In 1981, they opened their first retail outlet in Sandbach, Cheshire. The first Bargain Booze franchise opened in 1988, and was the first time the Bargain Booze fascia was used
2018 financial difficulties
The chain was owned by Conviviality, who also owned Matthew Clark and Bibendum, and had a head office in Crewe. In March 2018, Conviviality stated that it faced bankruptcy unless it could raise £125 million, as it issued its third profits warning in a month alongside a £30 million unpaid tax bill. The company had earlier said it was considering tapping shareholders for funds, and had arranged meetings with institutional investors to persuade them to take part in its share placing to raise the required money. This was unsuccessful and at the end of March, Conviviality announced its intention to appoint administrators within a fortnight, putting 2,600 jobs at risk. In early April 2018, the Bargain Booze and Wine Rack brands were acquired for £7 million by wholesaler Bestway, while Matthew Clark and Bibendum were acquired by C&C Group, the owner of Magners cider.
Bargain Booze is operated through a franchise model, with around 390 franchisees. The chain is strongest in the North of England, particularly the North West.It is the largest off-licence chain in the United Kingdom

He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and cooked while traditionally encased in the animal's stomach[1] though now often in an artificial casing instead. According to the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique: Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PEHFHM - Flags at Half-mast
Half-mast means the flag is flown two-thirds of the way up the flagpole, with at least the height of the flag between the top of the flag and the top of the flagpole. Flags cannot be flown at half-mast on poles that are more than 45° from the vertical, but a mourning cravat can be used instead (see below).
When a flag is to be flown at half-mast, it should first be raised all the way to the top of the mast, allowed to remain there for a second and then be lowered to the half-mast position. When it is being lowered from half-mast, it should again be raised to the top of the mast for a second before being fully lowered.
When a British national flag is at half-mast, other flags on the same stand of poles should also be at half-mast or should not be flown at all. Flags of foreign nations should not be flown, unless their country is also observing mourning.
The Royal Standard never flies at half-mast. It represents the Monarchy, which is continuous, and it would therefore be inappropriate for it to fly at half-mast.
Flags should be flown at half-mast on the following occasions:
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of the Sovereign, except on Proclamation Day when flags are flown at full-mast following the proclamation.
From the announcement of the death until the funeral of a member of the Royal Family styled Royal Highness', subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
On the day of the announcement of the death and on the day of the funeral of other members of the Royal Family, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.
The funerals of foreign Rulers, subject to special commands from the Sovereign in each case.

It was intended for feeding to children at a time of milk rationing. It was also convenient for mothers. It freed them up from breast-feeding at a time when women had to go man the factories for the war effort. At first, it was available only to children under 1 year of age
later 2 years.
The National Dried Milk scheme had been announced by the fall of 1940
by then, physicians were debating how it should best be served to infants and whether full-cream was indeed the best for them.
The storage and distribution of National Dried Milk across the country was contracted out to a company called SPD. You needed ration coupons to purchase it with, and could only get it at chemists (i.e. pharmacies.) There was a proviso, though, which housewives learned to watch for: once the tin at the store was past the Not for consumption after... date, it could be sold to anyone, off-ration, providing a windfall bonanza to the lucky shopper.

Transport operator Abellio is bracing for a battle with the Scottish Government to hold on to its Scotrail franchise as fresh data showed the number of delayed trains is increasing.
The Dutch company has admitted that its performance is not good enough but said after a scathing attack at the weekend from the Scottish Government that it would have no problem competing with a public-sector bidder for Scotrail.
Abellio won the franchise to run Scotland's train services until 2025 two years ago, but has since been fined £438,000 due to continued delays on its trains.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DNF - a special treat for Easter - classic Swedish dammsugare. The name means vaccum cleaners, and that's a very strange name for a cookie indeed. The reason? Well, traditionally these are made with lime-green marzipan and chocolate dipped ends, and maybe there was an early vaccum cleaner model that looked like that..? I really don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a simple answer out there, so it'll have to remain a mystery.
And it has many names, dammsugare just happens to be most widely used one. Punschrulle is also quite common, getting it's name from the liqueur used to flavor the filling. Punsch, as I've written before, is made from arrak and very sweet. If you can't find it, try using something like Amaretto or Frangelico instead - won't be the same, but it'll be really good.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNYK - The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and the largest library in the world by number of items catalogued. It is estimated to contain 170200 million+ items from many countries. As a legal deposit library, the British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a significant proportion of overseas titles distributed in the UK. The Library is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The British Library is a major research library, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings. The Library's collections include around 14 million books,[10] along with substantial holdings of manuscripts and historical items dating back as far as 2000 BC. In addition to receiving a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland (approximately 8,000 per day), the Library has a programme for content acquisitions. The Library adds some three million items every year occupying 9.6 kilometres (6.0 mi) of new shelf space. There is space in the library for over 1,200 readers.
Prior to 1973, the Library was part of the British Museum. The British Library Act 1972 detached the library department from the museum, but it continued to host the now separated British Library in the same Reading Room and building as the museum until 1997. The Library is now located in a purpose-built building on the north side of Euston Road in St Pancras, London (between Euston railway station and St Pancras railway station), and has a document storage centre and reading room near Boston Spa, near Wetherby in West Yorkshire. The St Pancras building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998, and is classified as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest for its architecture.

62 is a composite number with the divisors 2 and 31, being the eighteenth discreet semiprime. 62 has an aliquot sum of 34
itself a discrete semiprime, and the 10 member aliquot sequence (62,34,20,22,14,10,8,7,1,0). 62 is therefore the tenth member of the 7-aliquot tree. 62 is a nontotient.
It is the sum of the number of faces, edges and vertices of icosahedron or dodecahedron
and the number of faces of two of the Archimedean solids, the rhombicosidodecahedron and truncated icosidodecahedron.
62 is a repdigit in base 5 (222).
In base 10, 62 is also the only number whose cube (238328) consists of 3 digits each occurring 2 times.
Sixty-two is the atomic number of samarium, a lanthanide. It is also the code for international direct dial calls to the country of Indonesia. The Psychologist Sigmund Freud had an irrational fear of the number 62.
UK cycle route 62 is fully open and signed between the towns of Southport and Selby, 210 miles, This is from part of the Southport to Stockport section. The route begins again at Southport and runs almost entirely traffic-free through Liverpool on mostly old railway lines to Runcorn. Aside from the odd short on-road section - the longest of which is between Speke and Hale Bank to the south From Liverpool - the route from Southport to Altrincham is entirely traffic-free, continuing on canals and old railway lines between Runcorn and Altrincham.
Altrincham to Stockport is also predominantly traffic-free.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJN4J - White wisteria in full spring flower at Barrington Court, the National Trust property near Ilminster in Somerset, photographed in bright daylight against a clear blue sky. Long racemes of creamy white blossom hang in dense curtains from fresh green foliage, creating a rich seasonal garden image for use in horticulture, travel, heritage, countryside and National Trust features. Barrington Court is known for its formal garden rooms, walled spaces, orchards and productive kitchen garden, with the garden layout shaped in the 1920s by Colonel Arthur Lyle and strongly influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and the ideas of Gertrude Jekyll. The National Trust highlights the wisteria in the White Garden as a spring spectacle, filling the air with sweet scent during April and May. This photograph is useful for articles about spring gardens, flowering climbers, white garden planting, Wisteria floribunda alba, garden design, Somerset tourism, historic country houses, English gardens and seasonal days out in South West England. The image has strong commercial search value for buyers needing a clean, uplifting botanical subject, with cascading flowers, fresh leaves, sunshine, blue sky and a peaceful country estate setting. It can also illustrate garden visiting, heritage conservation, National Trust membership, plant collections, romantic planting schemes, cottage garden style, formal garden design, scented plants, spring blossom, pollinator friendly flowers and ornamental climbers. The absence of people keeps the composition flexible for calendars, magazines, websites, brochures, gardening blogs, travel guides and editorial features. The soft white flowers contrast with vivid green leaves and summer-like light, suggesting late spring warmth, fine weather and the short-lived beauty of wisteria season at one of Somerset's notable historic garden destinations.

This is a track from the album Black Cherry. Many critics complimented its blend of retro and modern electropop music (going back to the Mute labels roots), which was a departure from the ambient sound of their debut.
Black Cherry was a top twenty album in Goldfrapp's native UK, and its second single 'Strict Machine' was a top twenty single. It earned the band a deserved nomination for Best British Dance Act at the 2004 BRIT Awards.
She is a fascinating vocalist to see live. Be sure to take your partner or a lady friend if a bloke, or you may be chatted up all night at the gig. She has a large pink following. Nothing wrong with that, just enjoy the music and w=33062170@N08&

This is ye olde oak at Dunham Massey outside Altrincham, Cheshire. It is has been dated and thought to have been a seedling at the time of Queen Elizabeth the 1st. It has certainly had a life yet still produces healthy branches. 500 years is a long time.
Dunham Massey used to be on the Chester to York road in medieval times. The Masseys were the barons of Dunham until the 14th century.
By the Elizabeth period when our seedling took root, Dunham Massey Castle had been demolished. Probably during the medieval period, Dunham Massey Hall became the home of the manorial lord, and a centre of power in the area. The hall was rebuilt in 1616, leaving no remains of the old medieval hall. The mill at Dunham was first documented in 1353, although the mill's present structure dates to the 1860s. It lies on the River Bollin, opposite Little Bollington.
The first record of Dunham's deer park was also in 1353. The settlement of Dunham Woodhouse dates from the 15th century. During the medieval period, the primary source of employment in Dunham Massey was agriculture, mainly arable.
The Warrington and Stockport Railway was constructed through Dunham during 1853/54. Dunham Massey railway station served the area between 1854 and its closure in 1962. Dunham grew as a result, the population increasing by 57.5% between 1851 and 1881. Otherwise, the industrial revolution had little effect on Dunham Massey, and it remained a predominantly agricultural area.
I often cycle over to Dunham and can recommend the Vine, super pint of Samual Smiths Best Bitter. Only a stones throw from the hall &
deer park.
This is a colour infra red shot from an adapted 720nm filter Canon camera.

A significant number of the fallow in the Forest of Dean and in Epping Forest are of the black variety, very unlike this one, the general norm. One particularly interesting population is that based in the Mortimer Forest on the English/Welsh border where a significant part of the population have long hair with distinct ear tufts and longer body hair.
Dunham Park covers an area of nearly 193 acres. It's part of the Dunham Park Estate, run by the National Trust (NT). The park is mostly \u201cpasture-woodland or park-woodland\u201d and has been since the Middle Ages.
Many of the oak trees, which make up the larger part of the woodland, date back to the 17th century. Dunham Park is the only place in the northwest of England with such a concentration of old trees, and one of only a few remaining in England, making it a site of national importance. The park supports a range of animals, including fallow deer like this one and over 500 species of insect.
Dunham Massey has many grade II listed buildings. Among the most striking is the 18th century sandstone obelisk at the end of the north vista from Dunham Massey Hall, close to where this image was taken. Tradition has it that it marks the burial site of a race horse.
There are a number of other listed structures close by in the grounds of Dunham Massey Hall, including the 1720 wellhouse that supplied water to the hall until the 1860s, and the early 18th century ornamental sundial in front of the hall, depicting a black slave clad in leaves, carrying the sundial above his head. A bit of a throwback to a less enlightened age.

Quarry Bank overflows with the atmosphere of the Industrial Revolution. A visit to the cotton mill, built in 1784, and powered by Europe's most powerful working waterwheel, will certainly stimulate your senses.
The clatter of machinery and hiss of steam engines make an astonishing noise. Take a guided tour of the Apprentice House, which housed the pauper children who worked in the Mill and learn about their working and home lives.
Visit the stunning garden, the Greg family's picturesque valley retreat adjoining the Mill. Stroll to Styal village, built by the Greg family to house the Mill workers, and still a thriving community, or walk through ancient woods along the River Bollin.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4447528033 - 'The Scottish Parliament Office Building. As important as the St Andrews cross to many people in the far north of the UK and strangely linked by a Hexadecimal number '0065BD'. Although I have heard it said that folk in the far islands of the north and west feel as distant from Holyrood as from Westminster. Living in north west england I can identify a little with that sentiment.
A saltire, Saint Andrew's Cross, or crux decussata is said to be the one on which St Andrew was martyred. The Cross of Burgundy contains a varient too. It is quite common to see it flying from Scottish Government buildings every day from 8am until sunset. Its use appears to date from around 1180. Although it was the Parliament of Scotland that decreed in 1385 that Scottish soldiers wear a white Saint Andrew's Cross on their person. This was both front and back to identify them.
The blues used varied on shades of dyes etc and many variations evolved over the years. There were calls to standardise the shade of blue. In 2003 a committee of the Scottish Parliament met to examine a petition that the Scottish Government adopt the Pantone 300 colour as a standard. How very Photoshop(!) This blue is of a lighter shade than the Pantone 280 of the Union Jack Flag. Having taken advice from a number of sources, including the office of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the committee recommended that the optimum shade of blue for the Saltire be Pantone 300. Nurds and pub quiz experts may want to know that Pantone 300 is #0065BD expressed as hexadecimal web colours.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This image reminded me of a track from the early 1980's. These machines would be used when anyone at factories or yards were coming in or out. To record their time. Now almost all of these have gone as has most of the industry too, shipped, off-shore.
'Shipbuilding' is a song written by singer/songwriter Elvis Costello and producer Clive Langer. Written during the Falklands War of 1982, Costello's lyrics discuss the contradiction of the war bringing back prosperity to traditional shipbuilding areas of Merseyside (Cammell Laird), North East England (Swan Hunter) and Belfast (Harland and Wolff)[1] to build new ships to replace those being sunk in the war, whilst also sending off the sons of these areas to fight and, potentially, lose their lives in those same ships.
According to Clive Langer, he'd written the tune for Robert Wyatt but wasn't happy with the lyrics that he had written himself. Langer played the tune to Costello at a party hosted by Nick Lowe, and within days Costello had written lyrics he described as 'the best lyrics I've ever written.
Robert Wyatt was a founding member of the influential Canterbury scene band Soft Machine. In June 1973, during an alcohol-fueled party for Gong's Gilli Smyth and June Campbell Cramer an inebriated Wyatt fell from a fourth floor window. He was paralysed from the waist down and consequently uses a wheelchair.

------------------------
A time clock, sometimes known as a clock card machine, clocking in machine, punch clock or time recorder, is a mechanical (or electronic) timepiece used to assist in tracking the hours an employee of a company worked.
In regards to mechanical time clocks this was accomplished by inserting a heavy paper card, called a time card, into a slot on the time clock. When the time card hit a contact at the rear of the slot, the machine would print day and time information on the card. This allowed a timekeeper to have an official record of the hours an employee worked to calculate and pay an employee. I used one of these for about a year in my first employment. A long queue would form at about 4:59 ready to stamp your card right on the turn of five PM!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4311815905 - 'Like buses, premium bonds go quiet then what do you know, three come along at once. Pretty amazing, the excitement was huge opening each envelope (I sat down obviously) and finding \u00a325, then \u00a325 (will the next one be a \u00a3Million?) and another \u00a325. Doh!
So I have not retired just yet. cannot wait until about 2015 when I may win (\u00a325) again. Fingers crossed! Aparently one in three britains have some bonds so you may have some stashed away yourself.
The premium savings bonds are a bit nostalgic for the British and started in the 1950's. I have \u00a32 of bonds that my parents bought for me in the 1960's.
It could have been one of those that won here, or a few more recent ones I got on-line, I will never know.
Still a cheque is as good as money for the moment. I better rush to teh bank before 11 March 2010 and get it paid in.
The bonds are drawn at random by the 4th generation ERNIE computer. This uses thermal noise in transistors as its source of entropy for generating random bond numbers. The original ERNIE used a gas neon diode. In each case the randomness of electrons and natural unpredictable variance of the physical processes involved mean that systematic trends and similar cumulative effects that affect any pseudorandom number generator are reduced greatly, if not eliminated.
ERNIE's output is independently tested each month by an independent actuary appointed by the government and the draw is only valid if the output passes tests that indicate it is statistically random. In case you were wondering.
With recent reduction in interest rates, an investment in the Irish Lottery bonus ball at Paddy Power might be a better bet for a huge retirement pot.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MEP - The Dramatic Cuillins (Scottish Gaelic: An Cuilthionn or An Cuiltheann) are a range of rocky mountains located on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The true Cuillin is also known as the Black Cuillin to distinguish it from the Red Cuilins (na Beanntan Dearga, known locally as Red Hills) across Glen Sligachan. The Red Cuilins are lower and, being less rocky, have fewer scrambles or climbs.
The highest point of the Cuillins, and of the Isle of Skye,[citation needed] is Sgùrr Alasdair in the Black Cuillins at 992 m (3,255 ft). The Cuillins are one of 40 National Scenic Areas in Scotland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMXA6 - Mow Cop is an isolated village which straddles the CheshireStaffordshire border, and is thus divided between the North West and West Midlands regions of England. It is 24 miles south of Manchester and 6 miles north of Stoke-on-Trent.
The name is first recorded as Mowel around 1270 AD, and is believed to be derived from either the Anglo-Saxon Mūga-hyll, meaning heap-hill, with copp = head added later, or the Common Celtic ancestor of Welsh moel (= hill), with Anglo-Saxon copp added later.
At the village's summit, men once quarried stone to make into querns, used since the Iron Age for milling corn
this trade ended during the Victorian period. The village also has a long history of coal mining. Mow Cop Castle is a folly of a ruined castle at the summit of the hill, built in 1754. The village was served by a railway station which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on October 9, 1848. Mow Cop is known for its 'Killer Mile', a one mile road race from the level crossing on the western side of the hill, up to the Castle. The race was originated in the early 1980s by John Britton, and sponsored by ICL (Kidsgrove). It continues today, organised by the Mow Cop Residents' Association. Mow Cop Runners, a local running club founded in 2009, meet at The Ash Inn and organise The Mow Cop Hill Race, a 6.5 mile fell race.
Mow Cop is also noteworthy as the birthplace of the Primitive Methodist movement. Starting in 1800, Hugh Bourne from Stoke-on-Trent and William Clowes from Burslem began holding open-air prayer meetings. On 31 May 1807, a large 14-hour camp meeting was held and as a result the Primitive Methodist Church was formed in 1810. These camp meetings became a regular feature at Mow Cop, with camps later held to celebrate the 100th, 150th and 200th anniversaries of the first camp.
The village features prominently in the 1973 novel Red Shift by Alan Garner.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1CC - The Jodrell Bank Observatory (originally the Jodrell Bank Experimental Station, then the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories from 1966 to 1999
/ˈdʒɒdrəl/) is a British observatory that hosts a number of radio telescopes, and is part of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. The observatory was established in 1945 by Sir Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester who wanted to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes located at the observatory
the Mark II, as well as 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is also the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The site of the observatory, which includes the Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, is located in the civil parish of Lower Withington (the rest being in Goostrey civil parish), near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. It is reached from the A535. An excellent view of the telescope can be seen by travelling by train, as the main line between Manchester and Crewe passes right by the site, with Goostrey station being only a short distance away.
