Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX8X - This photograph shows a National Trust visitor sign reading Welcome to Castlefield Viaduct, mounted at the entrance to the Castlefield Viaduct in Manchester city centre. The sign marks the public access point to a former nineteenth-century railway viaduct that has been repurposed as an elevated urban park and walking route.
The Castlefield Viaduct was originally constructed in the 1890s to carry rail traffic into Manchester during the peak of the city's industrial expansion. After decades of disuse, the structure was restored and reopened by the National Trust as an experimental urban regeneration project, allowing the public to explore a significant piece of Manchester's industrial infrastructure from a new perspective.
The contemporary sign design contrasts deliberately with the historic ironwork of the viaduct, reflecting the project's blend of heritage conservation and modern interpretation. Clear visitor signage plays an important role in reintroducing former industrial spaces as accessible public places, helping frame the site not just as a relic of the past but as a living part of the modern city.
Taken in daylight, the image documents the interface between historic infrastructure and present-day cultural use. It illustrates Manchester's wider approach to heritage-led regeneration, where Victorian engineering, environmental enhancement, and public engagement are brought together to create new urban experiences in the city centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXE7 - This image shows a close up view of a cast iron inscription reading Castlefield, formed into a metal surface that has developed a rich rusted patina over time. The lettering is characteristic of Victorian industrial typography, designed to be both durable and legible within the heavy engineering environments that once defined this part of Manchester.
Castlefield is widely recognised as one of the most historically significant industrial areas in the city, closely associated with canals, railways, warehouses, and early transport infrastructure that supported Manchester's growth during the industrial revolution. Cast iron was a defining material of this period, used extensively for bridges, viaducts, columns, and signage because of its strength, mouldability, and relative affordability.
The surface corrosion visible in the image reflects decades of exposure to weather and urban conditions, creating a textured finish that is now valued as part of the area's historic character. Rather than being removed, such patina is often retained in conservation and regeneration projects, where material ageing is seen as evidence of authenticity and continuity.
Taken in natural daylight, the photograph functions both as a documentary record of industrial heritage and as a strong abstract study of texture, lettering, and material decay. It illustrates how small details within Manchester's historic infrastructure help tell the wider story of the city's industrial past and its ongoing relationship with conservation, regeneration, and place identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXEK - This photograph shows visitors walking along the Castlefield Viaduct in Manchester city centre, a former nineteenth-century railway viaduct that has been repurposed by the National Trust as an elevated urban park and heritage attraction. The viaduct, originally constructed in the 1890s, once carried heavy rail traffic into Manchester during the height of the city's industrial and railway expansion.
After falling out of use, the structure was restored and reopened as the Castlefield Viaduct Sky Park, allowing the public to access a piece of Manchester's industrial infrastructure that had been largely hidden for decades. The image captures members of the public exploring the viaduct on foot, walking along a gravel path flanked by planting and wildflowers designed to encourage biodiversity in the city centre.
The exposed steel beams and lattice girders remain visible throughout the structure, emphasising the robust Victorian engineering that underpinned Manchester's role as a global industrial city. In the distance, modern city buildings rise beyond the viaduct, creating a strong contrast between historic rail infrastructure and contemporary urban development.
Taken in daylight under overcast skies, the photograph reflects Manchester's ongoing approach to heritage-led regeneration, where industrial relics are adapted for public use rather than demolished. The Castlefield Viaduct stands as a prominent example of how historic transport infrastructure can be reimagined as accessible green space, offering new perspectives on the city while preserving its industrial character.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXF1 - This photograph shows garden planting at the Castlefield Viaduct in Manchester city centre, part of a National Trust project that has transformed a disused Victorian railway viaduct into an elevated urban park and walkway. The viaduct dates from the late nineteenth century and once carried rail traffic into Manchester during the height of the city's industrial expansion.
Now reopened to the public, the structure features carefully designed planting beds that introduce greenery and biodiversity into the heart of the city. The image shows shrubs and foliage contained within large planters, with modern high rise buildings of the Manchester skyline rising behind, illustrating the contrast between historic rail infrastructure and contemporary urban development.
The Castlefield Viaduct project explores how redundant industrial structures can be repurposed as sustainable public spaces. Rather than restoring the viaduct to a fixed historical state, the National Trust has approached the site as an evolving landscape, allowing planting, materials, and public use to change over time. This experimental approach reflects wider debates about the future of industrial heritage in dense city centres.
Taken in daylight under broken cloud and blue sky, the photograph captures the viaduct as a place of calm and reflection above the surrounding streets and rail lines. It represents Manchester's broader commitment to heritage led regeneration, where former industrial assets are adapted to support wellbeing, environmental goals, and new ways of experiencing the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28M5 - Jet2holidays is a British package holiday provider and tour operator. It was formed in 2007 as a subsidiary of Dart Group PLC (now renamed Jet2 PLC), and a sister to Jet2.com, the third-largest scheduled airline in the UK.[1] As of 2018, Jet2holidays is the second-largest tour operator in the United Kingdom, by ATOL licenses granted.[2][3]
History
Jet2holidays was founded in June 2007. Upon launch, Jet2holidays provided package holidays from Jet2.com's six bases in Leeds, Manchester, Belfast, Newcastle, Blackpool and Edinburgh. It began operations at East Midlands Airport in May 2010[4] and announced an expansion to Glasgow Airport later that year.[5] In 2014, Blackpool Airport closed, taking the company back down to seven bases.[6]
By March 2015, Jet2holidays was providing package holidays to one million customers per year.[7] The following month, it created Jet2CityBreaks, a subsidiary specialising in shorter holidays to its city destinations.[8]
In April 2017, Jet2holidays became available from nine bases after the company announced an expansion to Birmingham Airport and London Stansted Airport. On 7 June 2017, Jet2holidays launched Jet2Villas, expanding its portfolio of self-catered package holidays.[9] Later that month, it celebrated ten years of operation, and had sold over seven million package holidays.[10]
In October 2017, when Monarch Airlines ceased operations, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays added over 650,000 seats from former Monarch airports, leading to Jet2holidays overtaking Thomas Cook Tour Operations to become the second-largest tour operator in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYBX - One of the oldest buildings in the town is the Grade I listed Market Hall, built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks in 1627 and still in use. The building was intended as a shelter for merchants and farmers selling their wares with the arched side walls open to allow light, and customers, to enter. There was a plan to sell the hall in the 1940s but locals raised funds to purchase the property and donated it to the National Trust.
Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAWXE8 - Dunham Massey removes statue depicting kneeling black figure
The figure has now been moved from the front of the hall while they make plans for its future
The National Trust has now removed a statue of a black male from the forecourt of Dunham Massey Hall.
The move comes after calls to remove it from its prominent position in front of the Cheshire stately home due to its association with colonialism and slavery.
The life-size statue depicts a black figure dressed in a skirt of feathers, kneeling on one knee holding a sundial above his head.
The Blackamoor sundial at Dunham Massey is currently under review for its connotations with slavery
It comes after the National Trust revealed they were reviewing what to do with the statue while working to tackle the often painful and challenging histories attached to our places and collections.
It says it is now making plans about how to address this history in a way that 'fully acknowledges the appalling histories of slavery and the slave trade'.
A spokesperson for the trust said We don't want to censor or deny the way colonial histories are woven into the fabric of our buildings.
For these reasons, we have decided to move it safely from its previous location while we make plans to address it in a way that fully acknowledges the appalling histories of slavery and the slave trade.
Scores of statues of 18th century figures associated with Britain's links to the slave trade are now under scrutiny following a series of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests.
The term Moor derives the word Blackamoor - a type of European art that depicts African figures, usually displayed in a subservient position.
It was a popular subject for sculpture, particularly in the gardens of grand mansions as a way to reflect the wealth generated by the slave trade.
In modern times, this type of art is considered to be racist, with its association to colonialism and slavery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9Y69 - Lewis Carroll was the son of Charles Dodgson, the Rector of All Saint's Church in Daresbury village and Frances Jane Lutwidge, his real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the pen name Lewis Carroll is derived from his first 2 names, Charles and Lutwidge. He lived in the parsonage, which was bult in 1819, until 1843 when he was 11 years old when his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees and the family went to live in North Yorkshire.
The parsonage was a large, double-fronted dwelling built from stone and hand made bricks, it had a schoolroom, parlour, cellars and seven upstairs rooms. Nine of Charles' ten siblings were also born in the house, his father took in paying pupils who stayed to learn Latin and Ancient Greek. The 1841 census lists a total of 22 people living in the house.
Though it was a happy home for the Dodgson family, the house was distant from the rector's parishoners at Daresbury. It was empty when it burnt down in around 1884.
The site contains a commemorative stone and a series of interpretive displays. The entrance to the parsonage is marked by a metal arch which echoes the archway that led into the original house, while the well, which once stood at the rear of the house, features a dormouse worked in metal. The sculpture which traces where the walls would have stood was designed by Christine Wilcox-Baker and crafted by Dave Broadbent. The site is now owned by the National Trust.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYM3 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan. Fanigan's son Patrick renamed and renovated the pub in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Fanigan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time. It was this high standard of work that gave the Crown the reputation of being one of the finest Victorian Gin Palaces of its time.
In 1978, the National Trust, following persuasion by people including Sir John Betjeman, purchased the property and three years later completed a ?400,000 renovation to restore the bar to its original Victorian state. Further restoration by the National Trust was done in 2007 at a cost of ?500,000. This work is the subject of a BBC Northern Ireland documentary, The Crown Jewel, screened in 2008.
A recognisable landmark of Belfast, the pub has featured as a location in numerous film and television productions, such as David Caffrey's Divorcing Jack (1998) and Carol Reed's classic 1947 film Odd Man Out.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYM6 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HGC80F - Hutchesons' Hall is an early nineteenth-century building in Ingram Street, in the centre of Glasgow, Scotland. It is owned and maintained by the Rusk Company and National Trust for Scotland, and is a category A listed building.
The current building was constructed, as Hutchesons' Hospital, between 1802 and 1805 to a design by the Scottish architect David Hamilton. This building was to replace an earlier hospital of 1641 in the city's Trongate, which needed to be removed to created Hutcheson Street. Hamilton's design incorporates in its frontage statues (carved in 1649 by James Colquhoun) from this earlier hospital.
Hutcheson's Hospital was built with monies left in the will of brothers George Hutcheson (c. 1580-1639) and Thomas Hutcheson (1589-1641) for the purposes of building a hospital for the elderly and a school for poor boys. The school is still operating today, although fee-paying, as Hutchesons' Grammar School.
In 1876, the architect John Baird was commissioned to refurbish the hall. This work heightened the structure and added a feature staircase.
The building fell into disrepair and had been empty since 2008. In June 2014, having undergone a ?1.4M refurbishment, it was restored by James Rusk of The Rusk Company and opened as a three flooring dining venue - Hutchesons steak and seafood house

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR5R3 - Postage stamps and postal history of Australia
The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps ? see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNKY - This image shows two fallow deer stags resting beneath a mature tree in the parkland at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester (postcode WA14 4SJ). The animals are pictured lying on grass in shaded woodland during summer, with their distinctive palmate antlers clearly visible.
Dunham Massey is a historic deer park managed by the National Trust and is well known for its long-established population of fallow deer (Dama dama). The herd has inhabited the estate for centuries, forming a central part of the landscape's character and ecological heritage. During warmer months, deer are often seen resting in shaded areas to regulate body temperature and conserve energy.
The image captures a calm moment of animal behaviour in a managed but naturalistic parkland environment, highlighting the coexistence of wildlife conservation and public access on National Trust estates. The presence of mature trees, open grassland, and undisturbed animals reflects traditional English park design, where deer are integral to both biodiversity and historic landscape aesthetics.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering British wildlife, deer behaviour, National Trust properties, conservation, countryside tourism, and heritage parkland landscapes in England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNM1 - These images show a historic sundial sculpture depicting a Moor figure at Dunham Massey, near Altrincham in Greater Manchester (postcode WA14 4SJ). The sculpture forms part of the estate's historic garden landscape and is accompanied by an interpretive plaque explaining its origins and symbolism.
According to the plaque, the sundial is in the style of one commissioned during the reign of King William III and represents Africa as one of the four continents recognised in European thought at the time. The figure is described as a Moor rather than an enslaved person and is believed to have been positioned at the site since before 1750.
Such figures, often referred to historically as Blackamoor sculptures, were common decorative elements in European gardens and interiors during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, they are understood within a broader historical and cultural context, prompting discussion about representation, colonial perspectives, and the values embedded in historic art and landscape design.
The sculpture is shown holding a metal sundial aloft, set against the backdrop of the red-brick mansion and formal grounds of Dunham Massey. The inclusion of the explanatory plaque reflects the National Trust's approach to interpreting historic objects transparently and responsibly.
Photographed in daylight, these images are well suited to editorial use covering historic estates, garden sculpture, heritage interpretation, National Trust properties, art history, and contemporary engagement with complex historical narratives.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7G - This image shows a costumed butler welcoming guests into the formal dining room at Dunham Massey, a National Trust country house in Cheshire. The room is laid for dinner, with a long table dressed in white linen, place settings, and period tableware, recreating the atmosphere of upper-class domestic life in a historic English estate.
Dunham Massey was the former seat of the Earls of Stamford and is now preserved by the National Trust as an important example of a British country house and estate. The interiors reflect centuries of social history, including the rigid hierarchy and rituals associated with domestic service in aristocratic households.
Interpretation staff dressed in period costume play a key role in helping visitors understand how rooms such as this would have been used, bringing social history to life through storytelling and visual context. The presence of the butler highlights the contrast between the grandeur of formal dining and the labour required behind the scenes to maintain it.
Photographed in warm interior lighting, the image emphasises the richness of the wood-panelled room, traditional furnishings, and historic d??cor. It is well suited for editorial use covering British heritage, National Trust properties, social history, historic interiors, and visitor engagement at stately homes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW0 - The George or George Inn is a public house established in the medieval period on Borough High Street in Southwark, London, owned and leased by the National Trust. It is located about 250 metres (820 ft) from the south side of the River Thames near London Bridge and is the only surviving galleried London coaching inn.
The first map of Southwark (Duchy of Lancaster ca1543) clearly shows it marked as 'Gorge'. It was formerly known as the George and Dragon, named after the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. There were many such inns in this part of London. Probably the most famous was The Tabard where, in 1388, Chaucer began The Canterbury Tales. In 1677 the George was rebuilt after a serious fire that destroyed most of medieval Southwark. The Tabard was also rebuilt after the same fire, but was demolished in the late nineteenth century.
It is known that galleried inns were used for Elizabethan theatrical productions (Inn-yard theatre).
Later, the Great Northern Railway used the George as a depot and pulled down two of its fronts to build warehousing. Now just the south face remains.
The George was one of the many famous coaching inns in the days of Charles Dickens. Dickens in fact visited the George and referred to it in Little Dorrit.
The building is partly . The ground floor is divided into a number of connected bars. The Parliament Bar used to be a waiting room for passengers on coaches. The Middle Bar was the Coffee Room, which was frequented by Charles Dickens. The bedrooms, now a restaurant, were upstairs in the galleried part of the building.
It is one of only two coaching inns to survive in Greater London, and is the only galleried example. The White Hart is immediately to the north, and the site of The Tabard immediately to the south (now Talbot Yard). The building is Grade I listed, and is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HA1 - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
Construction of Belfast, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945, Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950?52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence were established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BJ1W9W - Quarry Bank Mill (also known as Styal Mill) in Styal, Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile factories of the Industrial Revolution. Built in 1784, the cotton mill is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. The National Trust, which runs the site as a museum, calls it one of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites, home to a complete industrial community. Quarry Bank Mill was established by Samuel Greg, and was notable for innovations both in machinery and also in its approach to labour relations, largely as a result of the work of Greg's wife, Hannah Lightbody. The relationship between owners and employees is explored in the 2013 television series The Mill.
Samuel Greg leased land at Quarrell Hole on Pownall Fee from Lord Stamford, who imposed a condition that none of the surrounding trees should be pruned, felled or lopped
maintaining the woodland character of the area. The factory was built in 1784 by Greg to spin cotton. When Greg retired in 1832 it was the largest such business in the United Kingdom. The water-powered Georgian mill still produces cotton calico. The Gregs were careful and pragmatic, paternalistic millowners, and the mill was expanded and changed throughout its history. When Greg's son, Robert Hyde Greg, took over the business, he introduced weaving. Samuel Greg died in 1834.

This is a track from the album Black Cherry. Many critics complimented its blend of retro and modern electropop music (going back to the Mute labels roots), which was a departure from the ambient sound of their debut.
Black Cherry was a top twenty album in Goldfrapp's native UK, and its second single 'Strict Machine' was a top twenty single. It earned the band a deserved nomination for Best British Dance Act at the 2004 BRIT Awards.
She is a fascinating vocalist to see live. Be sure to take your partner or a lady friend if a bloke, or you may be chatted up all night at the gig. She has a large pink following. Nothing wrong with that, just enjoy the music and w=33062170@N08&

This is ye olde oak at Dunham Massey outside Altrincham, Cheshire. It is has been dated and thought to have been a seedling at the time of Queen Elizabeth the 1st. It has certainly had a life yet still produces healthy branches. 500 years is a long time.
Dunham Massey used to be on the Chester to York road in medieval times. The Masseys were the barons of Dunham until the 14th century.
By the Elizabeth period when our seedling took root, Dunham Massey Castle had been demolished. Probably during the medieval period, Dunham Massey Hall became the home of the manorial lord, and a centre of power in the area. The hall was rebuilt in 1616, leaving no remains of the old medieval hall. The mill at Dunham was first documented in 1353, although the mill's present structure dates to the 1860s. It lies on the River Bollin, opposite Little Bollington.
The first record of Dunham's deer park was also in 1353. The settlement of Dunham Woodhouse dates from the 15th century. During the medieval period, the primary source of employment in Dunham Massey was agriculture, mainly arable.
The Warrington and Stockport Railway was constructed through Dunham during 1853/54. Dunham Massey railway station served the area between 1854 and its closure in 1962. Dunham grew as a result, the population increasing by 57.5% between 1851 and 1881. Otherwise, the industrial revolution had little effect on Dunham Massey, and it remained a predominantly agricultural area.
I often cycle over to Dunham and can recommend the Vine, super pint of Samual Smiths Best Bitter. Only a stones throw from the hall &
deer park.
This is a colour infra red shot from an adapted 720nm filter Canon camera.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGAM - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4639706870 - 'This fallow deer buck had just been disturbed from grazing at Dunham Massey. Only the males have antlers. A significant number of the fallow in the Forest of Dean and in Epping Forest are of the black variety, very unlike this one, the general norm. One particularly interesting population is that based in the Mortimer Forest on the English/Welsh border where a significant part of the population have long hair with distinct ear tufts and longer body hair.
Dunham Park covers an area of nearly 193 acres. It's part of the Dunham Park Estate, run by the National Trust (NT). The park is mostly \u201cpasture-woodland or park-woodland\u201d and has been since the Middle Ages.
Many of the oak trees, which make up the larger part of the woodland, date back to the 17th century. Dunham Park is the only place in the northwest of England with such a concentration of old trees, and one of only a few remaining in England, making it a site of national importance. The park supports a range of animals, including fallow deer like this one and over 500 species of insect.
Dunham Massey has many grade II listed buildings. Among the most striking is the 18th century sandstone obelisk at the end of the north vista from Dunham Massey Hall, close to where this image was taken. Tradition has it that it marks the burial site of a race horse.
There are a number of other listed structures close by in the grounds of Dunham Massey Hall, including the 1720 wellhouse that supplied water to the hall until the 1860s, and the early 18th century ornamental sundial in front of the hall, depicting a black slave clad in leaves, carrying the sundial above his head. A bit of a throwback to a less enlightened age.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4594180519 - 'Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system, and the need for power the development of steam engines.
Limited companies were developed to construct the mills. This led to the trading floors of the cotton exchange of Manchester (now the Royal Excahnge Theatre), which in its turn created a vast commercial city. At the top of the town hall in Manchester sits a golden cotton seed, its basis for its wealth.
The mills also created extra employment, leading to the expansion of local populations and the need for extra housing. In response, mill towns with municipal governments were created. The mills provided independent incomes for girls and women. Child labour was used in the mills, and the factory system led to organised labour.
Poor conditions in cotton mills became the subject of exposes and the Factory Acts were written to regulate them. The cotton mill was originally a Lancashire phenomenon that then was copied in New England and later in the southern states of America.
In the twentieth century, North West England lost its supremacy to the United States, then India and then China. In the twenty-first century redundant mills have been accepted as part of a country's industrial heritage.

Quarry Bank overflows with the atmosphere of the Industrial Revolution. A visit to the cotton mill, built in 1784, and powered by Europe's most powerful working waterwheel, will certainly stimulate your senses.
The clatter of machinery and hiss of steam engines make an astonishing noise. Take a guided tour of the Apprentice House, which housed the pauper children who worked in the Mill and learn about their working and home lives.
Visit the stunning garden, the Greg family's picturesque valley retreat adjoining the Mill. Stroll to Styal village, built by the Greg family to house the Mill workers, and still a thriving community, or walk through ancient woods along the River Bollin.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4C - Iona Abbey, now an ecumenical church, is of particular historical and religious interest to pilgrims and visitors alike. It is the most elaborate and best-preserved ecclesiastical building surviving from the Middle Ages in the Western Isles of Scotland. Though modest in scale in comparison to medieval abbeys elsewhere in Western Europe, it has a wealth of fine architectural detail, and monuments of many periods.
In front of the Abbey stands the 9th century St Martin's Cross, one of the best-preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles, and a replica of the 8th century St John's Cross (original fragments in the Abbey museum).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMXA6 - Mow Cop is an isolated village which straddles the Cheshire?Staffordshire border, and is thus divided between the North West and West Midlands regions of England. It is 24 miles south of Manchester and 6 miles north of Stoke-on-Trent.
The name is first recorded as Mowel around 1270 AD, and is believed to be derived from either the Anglo-Saxon Mga-hyll, meaning heap-hill, with copp = head added later, or the Common Celtic ancestor of Welsh moel (= hill), with Anglo-Saxon copp added later.
At the village's summit, men once quarried stone to make into querns, used since the Iron Age for milling corn
this trade ended during the Victorian period. The village also has a long history of coal mining. Mow Cop Castle is a folly of a ruined castle at the summit of the hill, built in 1754. The village was served by a railway station which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on October 9, 1848. Mow Cop is known for its 'Killer Mile', a one mile road race from the level crossing on the western side of the hill, up to the Castle. The race was originated in the early 1980s by John Britton, and sponsored by ICL (Kidsgrove). It continues today, organised by the Mow Cop Residents' Association. Mow Cop Runners, a local running club founded in 2009, meet at The Ash Inn and organise The Mow Cop Hill Race, a 6.5 mile fell race.
Mow Cop is also noteworthy as the birthplace of the Primitive Methodist movement. Starting in 1800, Hugh Bourne from Stoke-on-Trent and William Clowes from Burslem began holding open-air prayer meetings. On 31 May 1807, a large 14-hour camp meeting was held and as a result the Primitive Methodist Church was formed in 1810. These camp meetings became a regular feature at Mow Cop, with camps later held to celebrate the 100th, 150th and 200th anniversaries of the first camp.
The village features prominently in the 1973 novel Red Shift by Alan Garner.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEEGB3 - Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Fanigan.
The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9C - Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

The Crown has been given a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEHRHC - The Crown Liquor Saloon, also known as the Crown Bar, is a pub in Great Victoria Street in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Refurbished in 1885, and at least twice since, it is an outstanding example of a Victorian gin palace, and one of Northern Ireland's best-known pubs. It is owned by the National Trust and is leased to Mitchells & Butlers who run it as a Nicholson's pub
Opened by Felix O'Hanlon as The Railway Tavern, the pub was then bought by Michael Flanagan. Flanagan's son Patrick renamed and renovated it in 1885.
The Crown owes its elaborate tiling, stained glass and woodwork to the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan persuaded to work on the pub after hours. These craftsmen were brought to Ireland to work on the many new churches being built in Belfast at the time

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF7D9W - A close portrait view of a male fallow deer, also known as a buck, photographed in Dunham Massey Deer Park on the Dunham Massey National Trust estate in Cheshire, England. The deer faces the camera directly, its branching antlers clearly visible and its distinctive spotted coat sharply defined against the soft greens and browns of the surrounding parkland. The animal's alert posture and open mouth suggest heightened awareness, typical of deer behaviour during the late summer and autumn months, particularly around the rutting season.
Dunham Massey is a historic stately home and landscaped deer park with a long tradition of managed fallow deer herds, reflecting centuries-old estate practices where deer were both a symbol of status and a managed natural resource. Today the estate balances heritage conservation with modern wildlife management, offering an important refuge for deer and other species within a carefully maintained historic landscape. The open grassland and scattered trees visible in the background are characteristic of English parkland design, intended to frame wildlife within a picturesque setting.
Fallow deer are one of the most recognisable deer species in the UK, identifiable by their palmate antlers and variable coat patterns. Their presence in historic estates such as Dunham Massey highlights the close relationship between British wildlife, land management and cultural heritage. The image conveys themes of nature, conservation, seasonal change and the coexistence of wildlife within designed landscapes.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use covering British wildlife, countryside heritage, National Trust properties, conservation and animal behaviour, as well as commercial applications requiring high-quality imagery of deer, stately home parklands and rural England.
