As with other ambulance services in the United Kingdom, it does not charge its patients directly for its services, but instead receives funding through general taxation. It responds to medical emergencies in Northern Ireland with the 300-plus ambulance vehicles at its disposal. Its fleet includes mini-buses, ambulance officers' cars, support vehicles, RRVs and accident and emergency ambulances.
NIAS was formed on 1 April 1995 through the amalgamation of its four predecessors. Its full title is the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service Health and Social Care Trust.

It was founded in 1916, receiving its royal charter in 1928. Queen Elizabeth II was the patron until her death in 2022. The majority of members are registered nurses
however student nurses and healthcare assistants are also members. There is also a category of membership, at a reduced cost, for retired people.
The RCN describes its mission as representing nurses and nursing, promoting excellence in practice and shaping health policies. It has a network of stewards, safety representatives and union learning representatives as well as advice services for members. Services include a main library in London, and regional libraries. The RCN Institute provides courses for nurses.
History
The College of Nursing Ltd was founded on 27 March 1916, with 34 members, as a professional organisation for trained nurses
In 2018, after a pay agreement was not clearly explained to the membership, the Chief Executive and General Secretary Janet Davies resigned and Dame Donna Kinnair was appointed in an acting capacity. She was confirmed in the role in April 2019. A motion of no confidence in the RCN Council was called shortly afterwards and passed in September 2018 with 78% of votes, but on a turnout when only 3.7% of the membership voted. As well as the Chief Executive and General Secretary, the Director of Member Relations had previously resigned. Twelve of the 17 council members resigned, 10 of them standing for re-election in the subsequent election.
In 2019, the RCN's first strike ? limited to Northern Ireland, over staffing and pay issues?took place
In 2022, the RCN held a strike ballot over pay, held separately across NHS trusts and boards. Its members went on strike as part of the 2022?2023 National Health Service strikes. The RCN commented that from 2010 (the start of the government's austerity programme) to 2022, pay for nurses had fallen by 20%

Glossop's ambulance station could be under threat as health chiefs look at ways to save cash.
The Chapel Street station is one of 17 out of 35 in the region being reviewed by the North West Ambulance Service.
The service is considering closing, merging or relocating stations or carrying out major repairs.
With stations in Ashton and Dukinfield also under review, it could mean that the closest ambulance station to Glossop becomes Stockport ? 13 miles away.
The ambulance service will set out plans by June but says no final decisions have been made.
But local health chiefs have raised concerns about the proposals.
Dr Kailash Chand, chair of NHS Tameside and Glossop, said: This is something which is trying to get value for money but from which local communities could suffer.
Any reconfiguration in which local communities could suffer needs looking at. They are saying it will improve efficiency but I have my reservations.
Alan Stuttard, director of finance at NWAS, said that all stations in the North West will be examined.
The closure of some sites remains a possibility.
He said: In the current financial climate, as a responsible public sector organisation, NWAS must look at ways in which it can make efficiencies with minimum disruption to its frontline services.
One area which is currently being reviewed is our estate.
We are exploring opportunities to move some stations to shared or other accommodation without affecting the performance or level of resources in the area ? it's important to remember that it is not always the case that responding vehicles are from the nearest station. Other considerations are to ensure staff can be accommodated at appropriate sites and maintenance and running costs are minimised.
This review is looking at all stations/sites within the North West, and there is a possibility that some ambulance stations will close

A new survey of public attitudes to NHS dentistry shows that half of the adults in England find dental charges unfair amid escalating living costs. We have warned decision-makers that NHS dentistry is in desperate need of reform.
With living costs on the rise, our new findings show that health inequalities are widening as people in every part of the country struggle to pay for dental care.
When people find it hard to access NHS dental care, they feel pressured to go private, which is not an option for many. And even NHS charges can be hard for some to afford.
A representative poll of 2,026 adults based in England found nearly half (49%) of respondents, who had an opinion about NHS charges, felt NHS dental charges were unfair.
What are people saying?
The poll, which looked at people's experiences of NHS dentistry, including costs associated with dental care, found the following:
54% of people who had an NHS dentist appointment, had a problem. Of these, more than three in five (63%) respondents found it difficult to book an appointment. More than three in ten (31%) couldn't access all the treatments they needed.
46% of people who had an NHS dentist appointment, had issues with the costs associated with their NHS dental care. Of these:
More than a third (34%) of respondents said they had to pay privately to get all the required treatment
nearly a quarter (24%) reported they felt pressured to pay privately when they booked their dental appointment. Similar numbers (24%) said their NHS dentist didn't explain the costs before starting treatment
nearly one in five (17%) reported that their NHS dentist charged more for the treatments than the advertised NHS charges
Widening health inequalities
The shortage of NHS appointments has hit people on low incomes hardest, meaning they are less likely to have dental treatment than those on higher incomes

The Union Jack was quite a landmark that everyone knew, so I didn't want to lose that.
I can't believe it's eight years ago since we did it, that made everyone smile as well.
People are always saying ?are you the place with the Union Jack on it?'.
It might come back at some point in a year or two when all of this is over.
I've got plenty of rainbow paint leftover if anybody needs any.

How was the NHS Covid-19 app planned to work?
Contact tracing apps aim to automate the human process by using the phone in your pocket. More than 30 countries are building tracing apps and the UK is no different. Its tracing software ? the NHS Covid-19 app ? has been trialled on the Isle of Wight since May 7. The island was picked as a testbed before wider rollout across the UK and more than 50,000 people on the island have downloaded the app.
It's highly unlikely the Covid-19 virus is going to go away, Jonathan Van-Tam, England's deputy chief medical officer, said as details of the app were revealed at the start of May. Testing and contact tracing is going to have to become part of our daily lives in the future.
Matthew Gould, the CEO for NHSX, the technology arm of the NHS, says the logic for creating the app is clear: it can potentially allow cases to be identified earlier and reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
The app works using Bluetooth signals. Bluetooth technology within phones, which has to be turned on at all times, broadcasts an identifier that is unique to that device. The identifier is essentially a random string of numbers that updates on a regular basis and doesn't include any personal information. When your phone is near another Bluetooth device the two will exchange their identifiers. A list of all the devices, in the form of their unique codes, are stored on your phone for 28 days. Nothing else happens unless a user indicates that they are experiencing coronavirus symptoms.
There is very limited functionality within the app. The only thing that users can do is report if they have Covid-19 symptoms. Within the app there is one central question: how are you feeling today?

the cornice is continued as a moulded string course returned at the quoins. Above the porch is a single-storey glazed room, probably c1920, with a pediment to the gable which cuts into a former architrave. To the inside left is a late C19 canted bay with a dentilled cornice and to far left is an architrave to a former door, now a C20 window. INTERIOR: the entrance hall has a fine c1876 staircase, open-well, open string with a swept rail and cast-iron balusters. Some semicircular arches, moulded architraves to doors, parts of a cornice, one window to the rear with panelled shutters to a splayed architrave and a 6-panel door remain. History: In 1813 a public meeting decided that a medical institution be established for the relief of the labouring poor requiring medical and surgical assistance. In 1820 it was agreed to purchase a spacious house and garden in Salmon Lane for ?700. The infirmary was then supported by voluntary contributions. Alterations and additions were made in 1862.

This was commemorated in a foundation stone on Legh Street
The baths closed forever on 31 July 2003 and stood empty until the demolition company Anthony O'Connor & Sons Ltd from Salford moved in on Saturday 16 April 2011. They had a contract to clear the site in preparation for the construction of a new health centre. The baths consisted of four swimming pools, a steam room, laundry, and slipper baths for both ladies and men. The early boilers were typical ships' boilers (there were two of those) running on heavy oil. Phil recalls spending many a happy hour warming the oil line with a blowlamp in order to get the oil thin and warm enough before the boilers would fire up.

The Hollies are an English pop and rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and 1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
The original line-up included Graham Nash as guitarist and vocalist. You may know him from Crosby, Stills &
Nash, considered one of the first 'supergroups'.
This is a classic track, my favourite from the Hollies.
I am familiar with Asthma. It claimed the life of my mother, who suffered with it for many years.
Asthma (from the Greek \u03ac\u03c3\u03b8\u03bc\u03b1, \u00e1sthma, 'panting') is the common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Its characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm.
Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is clinically classified according to the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate.
It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment of acute symptoms is usually with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol). Alternatively glucocorticoid/corti steroids, such as Pulmicort, a brand name in the UK and Europe.
The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly since the 1970s. As of 2010, 300 million people were affected worldwide. In 2009 asthma caused 250,000 deaths globally.

In this day and age in western countries we should be able to eat ourselves out of a trip to the dentist
Foods that help muscles and bones also help teeth and gums. Breads and cereals are rich in vitamin B while fruits (an apple a day... ) and vegetables contain vitamin C, both of which contribute to healthy gum tissue. Lean meat, fish, and poultry provide magnesium and zinc for teeth. Some people recommend that teeth be brushed after every meal and at bedtime, and flossed at least once per day, preferably at night before sleep. For some people, flossing might be recommended after every meal.
Some foods may protect against cavities. Fluoride is a primary protector against dental cavities. Fluoride makes the surface of teeth more resistant to acids during the process of remineralisation. Drinking fluoridated water is recommended by some dental professionals while others say that using toothpaste alone is enough.
Milk and cheese are also rich in calcium and phosphate, and may also encourage remineralisation. All foods increase saliva production, and since saliva contains buffer chemicals this helps to stabilize the pH to near 7 (neutral) in the mouth. Foods high in fiber may also help to increase the flow of saliva. Sugar-free chewing gum stimulates saliva production, and helps to clean the surface of the teeth.
