In 1875, William Atkinson offered Southport Corporation £6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town.
William Atkinson was a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport with his sick wife looking for the refreshing sea air. He eventually moved to Southport and generously donated approximately £40,000 to the town during his lifetime and played an active part in its development. The architects Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, which opened in 1878.

In 1974, when the entire building was converted to Southport Arts Centre, the hall was transformed into the main auditorium. The gallery was removed, and stadium style seating provided in a single rake, facing the improved stage facilities. The smaller Victoria Hall was converted to a rehearsal room and then, in 1990, to a 300-seat studio theatre.
It had been suggested that retail development permitted in the 1980s to the side and rear of the building would limit the opportunity to improve facilities in the arts centre any further. However funding from Sefton Council, the North West Development Agency and the Government's Sea Change initiative from 2008 onwards led to a major redevelopment programme for the building.

The group's style fused punk, glam, electronic, reggae and new wave music. At this early time they were defined by the album 'Systems Of Romance', an album produced by Kraftwerk associate Connie Plank. Its justly regarded as the first synthpop album.
Foxx left Ultravox after a 1980 US tour and was signed to Virgin.He was way ahead of his time with the Metamatic and Garden albums, the singles 'Burning Car' &
'Underpass'. In 1985 he gave up his music career to become a graphic artist. In the 1990's he did re-emerge with a synth-pop sound. A trickle of releases and remixes have followed.
John Foxx And The Maths are touring the UK during October 2011. They will be performing material from their new album Interplay as well as classic songs from early Ultravox and John\u2019s solo career. This includes material from his pioneering debut album, 1980\u2032s Metamatic.
The tour started in Leamington Spa, then Bristol Thekla, I saw them Friday the 21st of October, 2011 at the Manchester Academy 4. Special guest was Tara Busch.
The last album Interplay is a collaboration between Foxx and electronic composer and synthesizer collector, Benge (Ben Edwards). The latter is best known for his 2008 album Twenty Systems, which was described by Brian Eno as a \u2018Brilliant contribution to the archaeology of electronic music.\u2019
The band are from left to right, Hannah Peel (Keyboards / Violin), John Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards on drums) and Serafina Steer (on Keyboards, Bass).

One of my favourite guitarists and cool too. Once when asked by an activist in 1970 'What would you change in America today'? He replied 'They should wear more colourful gear'. He also said 'Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music'. Indeed!
Born in Seattle James Marshall 'Jimi' Hendrix worked as a jobbing guitarist until being introduced to London in 1966/7. Hendrix learned to play by practicing almost constantly, watching others play, getting tips from more experienced players, and listening to records. In mid-1959, his father bought Hendrix a white 'Supro Ozark'.
Chas Chandler who was ending his tenure as bassist in The Animals and looking for talent to manage and produce. Chandler liked the song 'Hey Joe' and was convinced he could create a hit single with the right artist. It was Hendrix who he brought to London for that very reason. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born.
'All Along the Watchtower' was an original Bob Dylan track and was included on the classic double 'Electric Ladyland' album. Several reviewers have pointed out that the lyrics in 'All Along the Watchtower' echo lines in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9. The single reached number five in the British charts.
Dylan has described his reaction to hearing Hendrix's version: 'It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day.' In the booklet accompanying his Biograph album, Dylan said: 'I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way.'

The Lewis War Memorial is a war memorial dedicated to the men who lost their lives in World War I from the Lewis area (Outer Hebrides, Scotland). Completed in 1924, it is situated at the highest point of the town of Stornoway, and is visible for miles around.
It can no longer be climbed. Iron plaques containing the names of the fallen, many hundred (1151) are now presented on a faux stone circle at its foot.
From January to July 1920, the pages of the Stornoway Gazette carried advertisements appealing for subscriptions towards the building costs of a suitable memorial that would cost at least \u00a310,000 and more probably \u00a320,000. The response was overwhelming. As a spur to generous donations, it was announced that an anonymous resident was willing to double the amount subscribed to \u00a35,000 - this resident was later discovered to be Lord Leverhulme himself.
For more historical details, consult the excellent Stornoway Historical Society website. Better still consider a trip right up there to the top left edge of Britain, its cool.

'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society' is the brilliant sixth studio album by the English rock group The Kinks, released in November 1968. It was the last album by the original quartet, as bassist Pete Quaife left the group in early 1969. A collection of thematic vignettes of English town and hamlet life, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was assembled from songs written and recorded over the previous two years. Allmusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Village Green as a 'concept album lamenting the passing of old-fashioned English traditions.'
The record is widely considered one of the most influential and important works by The Kinks, and of the period as a whole. Although it failed to chart upon release, with estimated worldwide sales at 100,000 copies, The Village Green Preservation Society has become one of the band's best selling and most popular records. In 2003, the album was ranked number 255 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Manchesters second smallest boozer, with room for approximately twenty people including the feisty bar maid. The kind of venue where the music would stop when you walked in - that's if they had room for speakers - but within half an hour you'd be on first name terms with the regulars.
Not exactly a vast array of cocktails (This is more for the beer drinkers and G&T lovers) this is a bar that you hope will stay in Manchester for ever. In fact it's central location, on the busy Portland Street near Manchesters china town, makes it even more surprising that this hasn't been turned into apartments.

This image reminded me of a track from the early 1980's. These machines would be used when anyone at factories or yards were coming in or out. To record their time. Now almost all of these have gone as has most of the industry too, shipped, off-shore.
'Shipbuilding' is a song written by singer/songwriter Elvis Costello and producer Clive Langer. Written during the Falklands War of 1982, Costello's lyrics discuss the contradiction of the war bringing back prosperity to traditional shipbuilding areas of Merseyside (Cammell Laird), North East England (Swan Hunter) and Belfast (Harland and Wolff)[1] to build new ships to replace those being sunk in the war, whilst also sending off the sons of these areas to fight and, potentially, lose their lives in those same ships.
According to Clive Langer, he'd written the tune for Robert Wyatt but wasn't happy with the lyrics that he had written himself. Langer played the tune to Costello at a party hosted by Nick Lowe, and within days Costello had written lyrics he described as 'the best lyrics I've ever written.
Robert Wyatt was a founding member of the influential Canterbury scene band Soft Machine. In June 1973, during an alcohol-fueled party for Gong's Gilli Smyth and June Campbell Cramer an inebriated Wyatt fell from a fourth floor window. He was paralysed from the waist down and consequently uses a wheelchair.

A time clock, sometimes known as a clock card machine, clocking in machine, punch clock or time recorder, is a mechanical (or electronic) timepiece used to assist in tracking the hours an employee of a company worked.
In regards to mechanical time clocks this was accomplished by inserting a heavy paper card, called a time card, into a slot on the time clock. When the time card hit a contact at the rear of the slot, the machine would print day and time information on the card. This allowed a timekeeper to have an official record of the hours an employee worked to calculate and pay an employee. I used one of these for about a year in my first employment. A long queue would form at about 4:59 ready to stamp your card right on the turn of five PM!

A track from the late great Phil Lynott. I heard this live finishing up a set at the Manchester Apollo in 1979 I think, December time.
The band often used to finish up with this track in celebration of a guy called Ted Carroll. He had brought the band to London from Dublin in the early 70's and he ran a Saturday record stall called 'Rock On' on Golborne Road, Off Ladbroke Grove market.
Carroll was involved with early Chiswick label artists and the founders of Stiff records (motto 'If it aint Stiff, it aint worth a f**k). Thus was instrumental in producing and pressing a great many of the 70's vinyls in my loft. He never was involved in a Thin Lizzy release however, Decca and Phongram were the bands labels, with the former involved with the band releasing an album of Deep Purple covers.
Thin Lizzy's leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was certainly the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities.
For a great introduction to Thin Lizzy, the live album 'Live and Dangerous' is your only option. There is some disagreement over just how much of the album is actually recorded live. Producer Tony Visconti claimed that the only parts that weren't overdubbed were the drums and the audience. However Brian Robertson has refuted this, saying that he had refused Lynott's request to re-record a guitar solo, and that the only overdubs were backing vocals and some guitar parts by Gorham. He added, 'It's just not true. The only reason we said that it was recorded all over was obviously for tax reasons... so everything that Visconti claims is boll**ks.

The Fender Cyclone was a series of electric guitars made by Fender. Introduced in late 1997, the Cyclone body is similarly styled to the Mustang but with a significantly different specification. The body of the Cyclone is a quarter of an inch thicker than the body of a Mustang and is made of poplar, whereas contemporary Mustang reissues were made of basswood.
The Fender Cyclone was discontinued in 2007.

Primal Scream are the definitive Scottish alternative rock group. They formed in 1982 in Glasgow by Bobby Gillespie (vocals) and Jim Beattie. The current lineup consists of Gillespie, Andrew Innes (guitar), Martin Duffy (keyboards), Gary 'Mani' Mounfield (bass), and Darrin Mooney (drums). Barrie Cadogan toured with the band in 2006 as a temporary replacement after the departure of guitarist Robert 'Throb' Young. Young's permanent replacement has not yet been announced.
The band performed throughout 1982-1984, but their career didn't especially take off until Gillespie left his position as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band were a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, but eventually moved away from their more jangly sound, taking on more psychedelic and then garage rock influences, before incorporating a dance music element to their sound. Their 1991 album Screamadelica broke the band into the mainstream.
On July 21, 2008, Primal Scream released a new album called Beautiful Future described by new producer Bjorn Yttling as sounding 'much more pop and Krautrock than before.
Critics suggested it sounds a bit like Alan Vega and Suicide. In July 2008, the first single from the album, entitled 'Can't Go Back', was released. The track was produced by Paul Epworth who also produced the album's title track. The tour followed and hence these shots.

This is a track from 'Total Life Forever', the second studio album, released May 2010 by British band 'Foals'. They are a 5-piece band from Oxford, England. They are currently signed to Transgressive Records in the UK (and Sub Pop in the USA). Its been featured in the UK TV series Skins.
Wanting to push the envelope, On March 6 2010, the 'Total Life Forever' site was officially launched. Puzzles revealed images, lyrics and sound clips of songs from the album. The last clip appeared on Friday, March 12, and resulted with a password entry for the Foals' new website. The site presented the whole new art concept and media including samples of songs, photos and videos. The album was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize.
Foals are Yannis Philippakis, Jack Bevan, Jimmy Smith, Edwin Congreave and Walter Gervers. There is a debut album too, 'Antidotes'. From that album the track 'Cassius' has probably been the bands greatest single chart success and is one of those 'roadie and sound-guy favourites'.

Camel comes from the Arabic \u062c\u0645\u0644, \u01e7ml, (derived from the triconsonantal root signifying 'beauty'), is also used more broadly to describe any of the six camel-like creatures in the family Camelidae: the two true camels, and the four South American camelids: the llama, alpaca, guanaco, and vicu\u00f1a.
Remarkable for their ability to survive the desert extremes they can live for 40 - 55 years. Fossil evidence indicates that the ancestors of modern camels evolved in North America during the Palaeogene period (see also Camelops), and later spread to most parts of Asia. Humans first domesticated camels well before 2000 BC.
Camels do not store water in their humps as is commonly believed. The humps are actually a reservoir of fatty tissue. Concentrating body fat in their humps minimizes heat-trapping insulation throughout the rest of their body, which may be an adaptation to living in hot climates. When this tissue is metabolized, it acts as a source of energy, and yields more than 1 g of water for each 1 g of fat converted through reaction with oxygen from air. This process of fat metabolization generates a net loss of water through respiration for the oxygen required to convert the fat.
Their ability to withstand long periods without water is due to a series of physiological adaptations. Their red blood cells have an oval shape, unlike those of other mammals, which are circular. This facilitates their flow in a dehydrated state.

The design is a strong example of early 1960s provincial music promotion, when town halls and ballrooms across Britain and Wales played an important role in live entertainment, youth culture and social dancing. Its mixture of large headline typography, admission details, late transport information and multiple artist bills reflects the practical style of the period, when posters had to grab attention quickly from passing audiences. The central Beatles billing is especially notable, placing the poster within the rapid rise of the group during 1963, while still showing them in the context of a mixed live dance programme rather than a later arena-scale event.
The image has clear value for editorial and historical use covering British pop history, Welsh cultural heritage, live music venues, dance-hall culture, concert memorabilia and printed ephemera. It documents not only an appearance by The Beatles in Abergavenny but also the wider entertainment scene of the time, when local promoters, support acts and regional audiences were central to the spread of beat music and popular dance culture in the UK. The poster survives as an evocative paper artefact of a specific place, date and social atmosphere.

The Parr Hall and Pyramid Arts Centre are located in the Cultural quarter of Warrington town centre, in Palmyra Square.
Parr Hall was designed by the local architect William Owen in 1895.
Originally it was built for the people of Warrington by Joseph Parr. Warrington Musical Society gave the first concert.
The hall has hosted concerts and organ recitals from leading orchestras and cathedral organists over the years.
The Rolling Stones performed at the venue on 25 November 1963, The Moody Blues on 1 March 1965 and The Who on 22 March and 11 October 1965 and on 14 June 1965 The Yardbirds. The band James - having sold out concerts at much larger venues - played the Parr Hall on 20 December 1991 to record a promotional video. Other notable artist such as Feeder, The Courteeners, Beady Eye, Arctic Monkeys, and Shane Filan of Westlife have played at the venue, and Jools Holland is a regular performer.
