Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97JG - A wide, documentary view of a vibrant painted wall mural spelling STOCKPORT in large, bold letters beside a car park in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The artwork uses bright, contrasting colours and playful illustrated elements around the lettering, giving the scene a strong sense of civic pride and place identity. The mural reads as both public art and informal wayfinding, a visual you are here marker designed to lift an everyday parking environment and make it more memorable for residents and visitors.
The foreground includes typical car-park cues such as barrier rails and painted bay markings, reinforcing the practical setting, while the mural transforms the background into a graphic, social-media-friendly backdrop. The light is crisp and clear, consistent with a cold-season day, with a blue sky and clean shadows suggesting bright winter conditions rather than rain. The overall feel is optimistic and modern, aligning with the kind of culture-led regeneration and placemaking projects many UK towns have used to refresh public spaces and encourage footfall.
Editorially, the image is useful for themes including town centre regeneration, community art, street art and murals, destination marketing, and how public realm improvements can change perceptions of utilitarian places like car parks. It also works well as a general Stockport location image, with the large readable text providing instant geographic context for travel, local news, and lifestyle coverage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJX9 - A large, colourful mural in Manchester city centre celebrating The Hundred cricket competition and the Manchester Originals team. The artwork features both male and female players presented together, reflecting the competition's emphasis on gender equality and equal visibility within professional sport.
The mural forms part of a wider effort to rebrand cricket for a younger, more diverse and urban audience, using street art aesthetics rather than traditional sporting imagery. Bold colours, simplified forms and dynamic poses convey energy, accessibility and immediacy, aligning cricket with contemporary city life rather than exclusive sporting venues.
Photographed in August 2025 during the summer season of The Hundred, the mural functions as both public art and promotional messaging, embedding elite sport directly into the everyday streetscape. Its placement within Manchester reflects the city's strong tradition of large-scale murals and its willingness to integrate sport, culture and regeneration within the public realm.
The image is well suited for editorial use covering modern British sport, cricket's cultural reinvention, gender equality in sport, urban public art, summer events, and the evolving relationship between cities and professional athletics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRA - Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 18 May 1980) was an English singer, songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer, songwriter, and occasional guitarist of the band Joy Division, with whom he released the albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980).
Curtis had severe epilepsy and depression and died by suicide on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour, shortly before the release of Closer
On the evening of 17 May 1980, Curtis asked Deborah to drop her impending divorce proceedings
she replied that it was likely that he would have changed his mind by the following morning and then mindful of his previous suicide attempt and also concerned that his state of anxiety and frustration might drive Curtis into an epileptic seizure offered to spend the night in his company. Deborah then drove to her parents' home to inform them of her intentions. When she returned to the couple's home at 77 Barton Street in Macclesfield, his demeanour had changed and he informed his wife of his intentions to spend the night alone, first making her promise not to return to the house before he had taken his scheduled 10 a.m. train to Manchester to meet his bandmates.
In the early hours of the next morning, Curtis took his own life. He was 23 years old. He had used the kitchen's washing line to hang himself after having written a note to Deborah in which he declared his love for her despite his recent affair with Honoré. Deborah found his body soon after. In her 1995 biography, Touching from a Distance, Deborah recalls finding her husband's body and initially thinking that he was still alive before noticing the rope around his neck. According to Tony Wilson, Curtis spent the few hours before his suicide watching Werner Herzog's 1977 film Stroszek and listening to Iggy Pop's 1977 album The Idiot. Stark notes the significance of this album, as Pop's title was inspired by Dostoyevsky's novel The Idiot about the spiritually sensitive epileptic prince who was driven mad

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR174C - A large-scale mural titled Powering Positivity by Liverpool-based artist Paul Curtis, displayed on the side of a multi-storey building on Dale Street in Liverpool city centre, England. The artwork depicts a female athlete clearing hurdles, set against a dramatic sky, with prominent motivational text including Believe in Yourself, Progress Not Perfection, and You'll Never Run Alone.
Paul Curtis, also known professionally as Moose, is known for creating bold, optimistic public artworks across Liverpool and the wider UK, often using sport, community identity, and positive messaging as central themes. This mural reflects those values, combining athletic imagery with encouragement aimed at passers-by in a busy commercial area of the city.
Dale Street is one of Liverpool's historic thoroughfares, linking the commercial district with the waterfront, and has become a prominent location for large-scale public art as part of wider urban regeneration. The mural's scale and placement ensure high visibility, transforming the blank façade of a modern building into a striking landmark within the streetscape.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating contemporary street art, public murals, urban regeneration, inspirational public messaging, women in sport, Liverpool culture, and the role of large-scale artwork in modern city environments.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T2845B - Taken on 07 Oct 2023, this photograph shows Jim's Place , Cornucopia Mural - 16 Call Lane, Leeds city centre, Yorkshire, LS1 6DN. The location is 16 Call Lane, Leeds, Yorkshire, LS1 6DN. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains street art, painted wall detail and surrounding urban fabric, giving the image a clear sense of place. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include Leeds, artwork, art work, art, architecture, English, mural, Yorkshire, history, centre, historic, heritage, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It also has a useful contemporary feel, because it shows how long-standing places, policies, products or institutions are encountered by ordinary people in daily life. Further SEO-friendly usage could include local services, town-centre change, heritage branding, British social history, public infrastructure, consumer behaviour, community identity and documentary evidence for newsletters, blogs, policy papers and web features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGPN9M - Large scale mural of Mark E Smith, the late frontman and lyricist of The Fall, painted on the gable end wall of Chips at No8 on Clifton Road in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. The portrait shows the singer in a white open neck shirt and dark jacket, with a cigarette in his mouth, looking out from the side of the chip shop in bright sunshine beneath a clear blue sky. The image is a strong editorial stock photograph for Manchester music heritage, post-punk culture, The Fall, Prestwich, street art, public murals, local identity, fan pilgrimage and the continuing cultural afterlife of northern alternative music. The mural was created by street artist Akse P19 for Prestwich Arts Festival in 2018, after Smith's death earlier that year, and became one of the area's best known pieces of public art. The Fall emerged from Prestwich and Greater Manchester in the late 1970s and built a fierce cult reputation through abrasive post-punk sound, repetitive guitar lines, dry humour, literary references and Smith's unmistakable vocal delivery. The location adds strong northern character: a music icon painted not on a formal civic monument, but on the wall of an independent chippy in a town centre street. That setting gives the image commercial and editorial value for stories about grassroots culture, working class creativity, independent businesses, British music history, urban art, memory, fandom and the way local communities commemorate difficult, brilliant and uncompromising artists. Visible details include the pale rendered wall, red brick adjoining building, drainpipe, cables, windows, strong sunlight and blue sky, all helping to place the mural in a real high street environment rather than a gallery setting. It works well for articles on The Fall, Manchester bands, John Peel era alternative music, post-punk legacy, Prestwich tourism, Greater Manchester cultural landmarks and the wider role of murals in marking local pride.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGPNA3 - Large mural of Mark E Smith, frontman of The Fall, painted on the gable end of Chips at No8 on Clifton Road in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. The wider street view shows the famous portrait beside the blue frontage of the independent fish and chip shop, with visible signage for Chips@No.8, fish and chips, take away and eat in. Smith is shown in a white open neck shirt and dark jacket with a cigarette, a confrontational and instantly recognisable image that reflects the abrasive wit and cult presence of one of British post-punk's most uncompromising performers. The mural was created by street artist Akse P19 for Prestwich Arts Festival in 2018 after Smith's death, and was reported as a six metre painting on the side of the local chippy. Pitchfork also reported that the mural was based on a photograph by Alex Whitton. The Fall emerged from Prestwich and Greater Manchester in the late 1970s, building a fierce reputation through jagged repetition, literary bite, dry northern humour and Smith's unmistakable vocal delivery. The setting matters because this is not a formal monument in a gallery or civic square, but a music icon painted on a working chippy in a local high street environment. The image is useful for editorial stories about Manchester music heritage, The Fall, Mark E Smith, post-punk, fan pilgrimage, public art, grassroots culture, Prestwich identity, independent businesses and the role of murals in preserving local memory. Details such as the red brick shop, blue fascia, rendered side wall, flue pipe, overhead wires, drainpipe, clear blue sky and strong sunshine place the artwork firmly in an everyday northern street scene. The photograph also works for wider coverage of music tourism, urban art, cultural landmarks, British alternative rock, working class creativity and the way ordinary local businesses become points of pilgrimage for fans.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGHTY - This image shows an empty former department store on Witton Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. The large retail unit is currently vacant, with its ground-floor windows boarded and covered with colourful temporary panels, while the upper floors sit unused above. Decorative bunting is strung across the street, creating a visual contrast between civic efforts to maintain vibrancy and the reality of retail vacancy.
The building features a mock Tudor black-and-white timbered facade, a style commonly found on prominent town-centre department stores built or remodelled in the early to mid-twentieth century. Despite its architectural presence, the premises show no active retail use, highlighting the challenges faced by large-format stores in smaller UK towns.
The photograph was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, with the pedestrianised street empty of shoppers, reinforcing the sense of quietness and underuse. Empty department stores like this have become increasingly common across the UK, reflecting long-term changes in consumer behaviour, the decline of traditional department store chains, and the shift toward online retail.
The image documents a familiar aspect of contemporary British high streets, where historic retail buildings await repurposing as part of wider town-centre regeneration strategies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ33E - This image shows the Summer of 69 mural located on a gable wall at Hopewell Crescent in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The mural depicts two children standing amid rubble and damaged buildings, referencing the widespread civil unrest and destruction that occurred in Belfast during the summer of 1969, a period widely regarded as the beginning of the Troubles.
Rendered in a restrained, illustrative style, the artwork uses muted tones and detailed line work to evoke memory, loss, and the impact of conflict on civilian life, particularly on children and families living in affected neighbourhoods. The surrounding painted scene of demolished housing and debris reflects the disruption to residential communities during that period.
The photograph was taken on a grey, overcast day, with low, diffuse light and heavy cloud cover reinforcing the somber tone of the mural. The weather conditions flatten shadows and enhance the subdued atmosphere, aligning visually with the subject matter.
Political and historical murals such as this remain a prominent feature of Belfast's urban landscape. They function as acts of remembrance, community storytelling, and public history, while also reflecting the ongoing complexity of how the past is interpreted and represented in shared space. The image documents how murals continue to shape identity, memory, and place in post-conflict Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CHX - Ulidia Training was set up to improve opportunities for much needed up-skilling and confidence building within marginalised Loyalist communities
Ulidia Training (UT) was established in 2014 and is a voluntary community organisation with a constitution. It is currently applying for a Charities Registration Number.
UT operates from the Ulidian Centre, a shop front premises in Ballymoney, a small town in Country Antrim with a population of around 10,000 people, 80 per cent of which are from a Protestant background (2011 census).
UT was set up to provide improved opportunities for much needed up-skilling and confidence building within marginalised Loyalist communities living in the previously UDA dominated North Antrim and Londonderry constituency.
Through the provision of training, education and essential skills, UT has been assisting ex-prisoners, former combatants and their families and supporters as well as young people at risk of offending or criminal recruitment, in improving their employment and social inclusion opportunities.
UT offers five main strands of activity. -Traditional Skills Training Programme, Cultural Awareness Programme, Major Events Programme, Restorative Justice Programme, Social Enterprise Programme
Although originally intended as a single identity project, UT has played a central role in the organisation and delivery of a number of cross-community and cross-border events over the last twelve months.
The organisation has also been integral in calming volatile community situations and improving inter-community relations through meaningful dialogue with Republican and Nationalist representatives from the area.

Ethelfleda, Queen of Mercia, Credited With Founding Runcorn in The 10th Century. The earliest recorded event in Runcorn's history is the building of a fort to protect the northern frontier of Ethelfleda's kingdom - Mercia against the Vikings in 915.
We placed her at the beginning of Runcorn' and above the Railway bridge (Ethelfleda Bridge) that marks the site of the fort. Depicted in the style of an illuminated letter from the Saxon Chronicles where this event is mentioned.
The letter R' is formed by Ethelfleda sending the Viking ship away. The ship is also copied from an illustration in the Chronicles, with the rune for the north star atop the mast.

A strong, female heroine, she was well known for avoiding bloodshed where possible but willing to physically join the fighting herself if needed.

Exactly two years after his death, two magnificent murals were unveiled in memory of the great Sir Ken Dodd on the wall of the theatre he helped save.
The murals now adorning the Liverpool Royal Court were commissioned by The Comedy Trust and created by the artist Paul Curtis, best known for his Liverbird wings mural.
Lady Anne Dodd who performed the emotional ceremony told the ECHO: They are just amazing, absolutely amazing. I'm humbled. I'm thrilled to bits. I woke up sad this morning because it's a sad day in one way, but this just shows he brought happiness.
Ken would have felt humbled he would have said it was tattyfilarious, plumptious and I'm totally discomknockerated!'
The first of the bright and colourful murals shows a sharply dressed Doddy, tickling stick in hand, by the seaside, in reference to Blackpool but also his love of playing seaside theatres all over the country.
The second features a couple of Diddy Men and words from the Squire of Knotty Ash's trademark song Happiness, which was sung by the Liverpool Royal Court Community Choir, as a big crowd gathered outside the theatre for the unveiling.
Lady Anne added: They couldn't be in a better place. They will be seen by so many people walking by or going past on buses and hopefully they will make people smile.
The murals were funded by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson with a contribution from his City Fund.
Sir Ken, who performed at the Royal Court across several decades, starting in the 1950s, played a huge part in keeping the theatre open in the 1970s.
In 1974, he entered the Guinness Book of Records thanks to his Marathon Mirthquake at the theatre it lasted three hours, 30 minutes and six seconds and included 1,500 jokes.
Later, he became part of the Royal Court Theatre and Arts Trust and even sold the first tickets at the box office for Laughter Show

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MN7PC6 - The Briton's Protection is a historic, Grade II listed public house in Manchester, England. Various dates are given for its establishment
the pub's own website says 1806, although its bicentenary was not celebrated until 2011. In any case, it was listed in Pigot and Dean's New Directory of Manchester & Salford for 1821 and 1822.
The pub's name recalls its use as an army recruiting venue. A set of murals inside the pub commemorates the Peterloo Massacre.
The brick building, with a slate roof, was granted Grade II listed status, offering protection from unauthorised alteration or demolition, in 1990. The largely intact 1930s interior has six public rooms. Other notable architectural features include a terrazzo-tiled corridor floor, moulded ceiling, original 1930s urinals and the serving hatch through which people in the two rear rooms are served beer from the front bar.
As well as serving real ale, it is known for offering over 360 whiskies.
For many years, the pub was operated as a Tetley house, then by Punch Taverns, before being taken over in 2014 by an independent operator and refurbished. The pub was voted Best Pub in Manchester in the Pride of Manchester Awards in both 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

Toin Adams, born in Kitwe, Zambia, is a sculptor working in steel, acrylic, fibreglass and other media. She spent her early childhood in eastern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and late teen years, in South Africa, where she attended the National School of the Arts, Johannesburg. In the late 80's she moved to England, where she began her career in sculpting.
Her two most well known works to date are Birmingham's largest sculpture: the 12 m high, The Green Man 2002 and the 10m high hanging sculpture The Deluge 2010 at Zellig, a 10 metres (33 ft) high hanging sculpture of falling bodies, both commissioned by the Custard Factory in Digbeth, Birmingham. I like making large scale sculpture, playing with diverse materials and figuring out how to make them...not fall over...
Adams is part of The Imaginary Beings Art Collective, a group of artists that work together to create collaborative art projects. Through this collective she has put together several art events around the world including The End of a World and Transcendence and Transformation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERPNC - The mosaic was erected on St Chad's Circus , outside the City's Roman Catholic St Chad's Cathedral, in July 1968, at a cost of £5,000. When the road system was redeveloped in 2007 the mosaic was demolished. Key features, including the heads of some of the main figures, were retrieved and retained by Kenneth Budd's son Oliver.
In 2012 it was re-created using new materials. The new mosaic was erected in January 2013, in the city's Irish Quarter, on Floodgate Street in Digbeth, in reworked form, including the controversial addition of a new face, that of former Lord Mayor of Birmingham Mike Nangle, the city's first Irish Lord Mayor. The work was overseen by Budd's son, Oliver, who worked from his father's original drawings. The retained sections were not used as the colours had faded and would not match the new Smalti mosaic tiles. A formal unveiling took place on 23 February 2013.
Featured alongside Kennedy in the mosaic are his brother Teddy, the Seal of the President of the United States (using real gold), Martin Luther King Jr., American policemen and other figures.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AYHHNJ - Every year on June 16th many James Joyce enthusiasts, some dressed in Edwardian costume, re-enact this epic pub crawl, and though it's referred to as a literary event' it's basically an excuse for lots of drinking broken up by a bit of walking and the reading of various excerpts from the book. The event is known as Bloomsday and the first mention of such a thing was found in a letter from James Joyce to a Miss Weaver, dated June 27th 1924 and referring to a group of people who observe what they call Bloom's Day' June 16th. The book itself must have made a big impression on someone back in the 1970s as the hotel was named after one of the story's main characters.
Fast forward to the present day and we find James Earley, a Dublin artist whose works are based on his family's artistic past within Irish stained glass art. James has been producing artworks in public spaces since 1997, playing an active role in the Irish graffiti movement, and from 2010 has developed abstract figurative works based on the principles and beauty of stained glass. He has travelled widely with his art throughout Europe, Asia and America and has worked on a variety of large-scale projects with various art-based organisations and multi-nationals which support the arts.
In 2014 James was commissioned to paint the exterior of Blooms Hotel
the project took a full year to complete and to date is the largest public artwork in Ireland. When I first saw it I was quite surprised that this street art wasn't just part of one wall, it was the whole exterior of the building. With my liking for bright colours and abstract, psychedelic designs I just had to take a few photos although the names on the pictures meant nothing to me at the time until I did a bit of later research and found the connection to James Joyce's Ulysses

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy TRN0YP - An Aberdeen street art festival has been given a national award following a public poll.
Over four days in April, international artists gathered to brighten up the city by creating large public murals for Nuart.
Business organisation Aberdeen Inspired played a large role in developing the festival, and has now been commended at the 2017 National Business Improvement District (BID) Awards for this.
Following an online vote by members of the public and deliberation by an expert panel, it was awarded the Place Management award over five other BIDs from across the UK.
The win marks the fourth award Nuart Aberdeen has won, including helping the city toward its European BID of the Year victory in July.
Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: We're absolutely delighted that Nuart Aberdeen has been recognised with another national award against strong competition from across the UK.
The festival was very successful and sparked a huge amount of interest in the city with large crowds coming to the centre to see the street art throughout the year. Sloans bar, down the alley, is Glasgow's oldest bar and restaurant and dates back to 1797 when it was a coffee house in Morrison's Court. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PM6293 - George Best (22 May 1946 25 November 2005) was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger, spending most of his club career at Manchester United. A highly skilful dribbler, Best is regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.[2] He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1968 and came fifth in the FIFA Player of the Century vote. Best received plaudits for his playing style, which combined pace, skill, balance, feints, two-footedness, goalscoring and the ability to get past defenders.
Born in Belfast, Best began his club career in England with Manchester United, with the scout who had spotted his talent at the age of 15 sending a telegram to manager Matt Busby which read: I think I've found you a genius. After making his debut aged 17, he scored 179 goals from 470 appearances over 11 years and was the club's top goalscorer in the league for five consecutive seasons.[3] He won two League titles and the European Cup with the club. His style of play on the field captured the public's imagination, and in 1999 he was on the six-man short-list for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Century. He was also an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
In international football, Best was capped 37 times for Northern Ireland between 1964 and 1977. A combination of the team's performance and his lack of fitness in 1982 meant that he never played in the finals of a major tournament. He considered his international career as being recreational football, with the expectations placed on a smaller nation in Northern Ireland being much less than with his club. He is regarded as one of the greatest players never to have played at a World Cup. The Irish Football Association described him as the greatest player to ever pull on the green shirt of Northern Ireland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW151 - A row of small red brick two up, two down terraced houses stands boarded and partly derelict beside the 30 Years of Slaughter loyalist mural off the Shankill Road in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The image combines poor working class housing, urban decay and the visual politics of the Troubles in one street scene. The houses have sealed doors, covered windows, damaged brickwork, weeds growing from the roofline and a general sense of abandonment, making the photograph useful for editorial stories about housing poverty, inner city decline, dereliction, regeneration, poor urban conditions and the long social shadow of conflict. The adjoining mural refers to 30 years of indiscriminate slaughter and is associated with loyalist and Protestant, Unionist, Loyalist community memory around attacks including the Four Step Inn, Balmoral Showrooms, Mountainview Tavern, Bayardo Bar and Frizzell's Fish Shop. It is a highly charged example of Belfast political mural culture, using public wall space to express grief, anger, identity and contested historical memory. The contrast between the memorial mural and the modest brick terrace is especially strong for themes around everyday life beside political symbolism, the overlap of poverty and sectarian history, and the way ordinary streets became carriers of public memory during and after the Northern Ireland Troubles. The photograph can illustrate Belfast mural tours, conflict tourism, dark tourism, post conflict urban landscapes, Shankill Road history, loyalist murals, social housing history, urban renewal, neglected housing stock, community identity and documentary street photography. The scene appears to be photographed in daylight under mixed blue sky and cloud, with direct sun catching the red brickwork while grey cloud adds a sombre mood. The image has strong commercial and editorial relevance for Northern Ireland politics, British and Irish history, architecture, housing deprivation, urban regeneration, working class

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW18H - Loyalist Red Hand Commando mural on Glenwood Street, off the Shankill Road in West Belfast, Northern Ireland, showing the RHC insignia, the Red Hand of Ulster with wings, eagle imagery and the slogans Lamh Dearg Abu and Ulster to Victory. The photograph records a political gable wall mural in a residential street setting, partly seen behind black railings and a pavement edge, with the painted wall running along the side of housing in the Shankill area. The Irish language slogan is more correctly written as Lámh Dhearg Abú and is usually translated as Red Hand to victory, a striking detail because loyalist murals more often use British, Ulster Scots or military-style symbolism rather than Irish language wording. This image has strong editorial value for coverage of Belfast murals, loyalist political imagery, the Shankill Road, Red Hand Commando symbolism, Northern Ireland politics, The Troubles, paramilitary visual culture, contested heritage, community identity and post-conflict street art. It should be treated as documentary evidence of a loyalist paramilitary mural rather than promotional imagery. The wall painting is useful for features on mural tours, political tourism, urban memory, sectarian geography, working-class housing areas, conflict legacy, public symbolism and the way Belfast streets became visual records of allegiance, remembrance and contested history. The overcast daylight, railings, terrace housing and narrow pavement give the scene a direct neighbourhood context, showing that such murals sit within everyday residential environments rather than formal galleries or museums. The image also suits wider searches on Unionist and Loyalist murals, Red Hand of Ulster iconography, Irish language in loyalist contexts, community commemoration, conflict studies, Northern Ireland heritage and documentary photography of political street art.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1D4 - Gable-end Republican memorial mural on Divismore Way in Ballymurphy, West Belfast, showing three figures, the Irish tricolour and republican shield symbols painted across the side wall of a housing estate property. The mural is identified by CAIN as the IRA Mural and Plaque on Divismore Way, at the junction of Divismore Way and Springfield Road, commemorating Bobby McCrudden, Mundo O'Rawe and Pearse Jordan. The visible inscription is a memorial dedication and includes the line asking passers-by to pause, pray and smile, giving the wall painting a commemorative and community remembrance function rather than simply decorative street art. This image has editorial value for themes including Belfast murals, West Belfast, Ballymurphy, political murals, Republican mural art, The Troubles, conflict memory, contested heritage, community identity, public art, Irish republican symbolism, housing estate culture and Northern Ireland history. The mural sits on a residential gable end behind a timber fence, with grass, weeds, houses and a cloudy sky placing it in an everyday neighbourhood landscape rather than a formal memorial site. That setting matters because many Belfast political murals are embedded in lived residential streets, where public memory, local identity, political messaging and tourism overlap. The photograph is useful for articles on mural tours, post-conflict Belfast, visual culture, memorialisation, community commemoration, urban history and the role of walls and public space in telling the story of the Troubles. It also suits critical coverage of how paramilitary, Republican and Loyalist imagery remains visible in parts of Belfast, and how such murals can be read as heritage, political statement, memorial and tourist attraction depending on viewer and context. The overcast daylight, housing estate background and clear gable composition make the image a valuable documentary record of West Belfast political street art and commemorative mural culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1H9 - Gable-end Republican mural on Whiterock Road in Ballymurphy, West Belfast, depicting the 1916 Easter Rising with armed figures outside the General Post Office in Dublin, an Irish tricolour and Celtic border decoration. The mural is recorded by CAIN as a Nationalist and Republican mural with the wording Freedom fighters outside the GPO. Easter Rising 1916, showing Pearse, Connolly and Countess Markievicz leading the attack on the GPO below the Irish tricolour. Extramural Activity also identifies the scene as Countess Markievicz outside the Dublin GPO, accompanied by Connolly and Pearse, and places it on Whiterock Road, west Belfast. The photograph has strong editorial value for themes including Belfast murals, West Belfast, Ballymurphy, Irish Republican visual culture, the Easter Rising, political murals, public art, housing estate identity, conflict memory, Irish nationalism, post-conflict tourism and the use of gable walls as sites of historical storytelling. The hillside behind the houses, likely part of the Belfast Hills and Black Mountain backdrop, helps place the mural within the elevated west Belfast landscape rather than a flat city centre street. The overcast sky, timber fence, grass verge and residential setting show how political imagery is embedded in everyday neighbourhood space, where memorial, identity, heritage, tourism and contested history overlap. The mural connects Belfast's Republican mural tradition with the wider story of the 1916 Rising in Dublin, when the GPO became one of the symbolic centres of the rebellion. Its painted references to the tricolour, volunteers and the neoclassical GPO make it useful for stock searches around Irish independence, commemoration, political identity and public memory. It suits articles on mural tours, Irish history, Northern Ireland politics, Troubles legacy, nationalist commemoration, documentary photography, community art, cultural memory and political symbolism.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DMX - Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments. The building faces Albert Square to the north, featuring the Albert Memorial and St Peter's Square to the south, home to The Cenotaph.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, the town hall was completed in 1877. The building contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with Ford Madox Brown's imposing Manchester Murals illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 280 feet (85 m) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952, is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world.

Hosting regular traditional sessions there is no better place to sample the real taste of our city simply step in and drink an Irish whiskey washed down with a pint of creamy stout.
Imagine Belfast with only five streets. Protected by earth ramparts and the city walls, the area where the Dark Horse now stands was convenient to the old iron foundry, the pottery, the whiskey merchants and the brown linen hall. Appreciate the superb décor and special atmosphere with beautiful antique mirrors, Belfast furniture and artefacts from some of the city's most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times providing a rather rare and unique glimpse of Belfast's historical past. Just call in and you will enjoy a huge warm welcome from a truly Belfast institution with a huge heart.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF21Y9 - A moody and atmospheric view of the Bobby Sands mural painted on the side of a Sinn Fein office on the Falls Road in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The mural depicts Bobby Sands, Irish republican hunger striker and Member of Parliament, whose death in 1981 became a defining moment in the history of the Troubles. Rendered in a muted, desaturated palette under heavy cloud, the image conveys the weight of political memory embedded within the urban streetscape.
The mural is framed by surrounding terraced housing and everyday street infrastructure, grounding this powerful symbol of conflict and resistance within a lived residential environment. In the foreground, children walk past the mural, introducing a striking contrast between the legacy of political struggle and the ordinariness of daily life. This juxtaposition reflects how history, identity and memory coexist within communities in West Belfast, where murals remain a prominent form of public expression.
Political murals along the Falls Road have long functioned as visual statements of identity, commemoration and resistance. They are part of a wider tradition of wall art in Northern Ireland that communicates historical narratives outside formal institutions, often serving as unofficial memorials and teaching tools for successive generations. The dark, brooding sky and subdued tones reinforce themes of loss, endurance and unresolved history.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Northern Ireland politics, the Troubles, Irish republican history, peace and reconciliation, public art, memory and identity, as well as commercial editorial projects examining contested histories, urban communities and the long-term social impact of political conflict.
